Good morning, all! The alarm went off at 6am, and I reluctantly got out of bed. I've got a lot today on my plate, some good and some I'd rather postpone for a while. The most tiresome objecct is another day of the McGlinnventory. We are seeing carpet and cartons are being tossed daily, so I know er're making progress.

When I get home today, I've got some tidying up here and probably a nap, if I don't catch a short one at Toyland today.

Work vibes for DR ELMORE.

Movie and discussion vibes for DR EDISAURUS.

Looks like EXTRA chairs were set up for the reading for MR BK.  Nice photo. That shirt looks familiar.

Nice photos of Little Ricky.

There were 2-3 used bookstores I used to frequent in Seattle back in the 1950s, but I can't recall their names.

TOD:

My first favorite book store was the now defunct Nook of Knowledge next to the Cherry Hill Mall.  Though it was part of a chain, this store had the look of an older establishment with wood shelves, planked flooring, large potted plants everywhere, dim lighting and a store cat which I think was named Kelly.  Nook of Knowledge always seemed to have a wide variety of books that were in my interests.  It was also the first book store that I frequented that carried magazines and comics.

I also came to like a chain that was local to the Philly area, Encore Books.  It was the first discount book store I ever came across.  They are also gone now.

First book I can recall buying was probably one of the Peanuts strip reprint paperbacks.  First all-text book was probably the novelization of THE ABOMINABLE DR. PHIBES.

When I was little, my dad discovered an old man who ran a used book store out of his house somewhere in downtown Louisville -- or what at least seemed like downtown Louisville, to me at the time. His living room, dining room and everything but one bedroom and kitchen were lined with book shelves and books. And we would spend hours pouring through for treasures.

One of the earliest volumes I remember getting -- and still have -- was a Peter Arno cartoon collection called "You're Sitting on My Eyelashes," which made me a New Yorker fan long before I ever saw the magazine.

I also remember finding a copy of Frank Capra's autobiography, "The Name Above the Title."

The place never had a name for me. We always referred to it as "the old man's." Somehow I feel I will end up like him one of these days, what with my overwhelming number of book shelves (eight in the room in which I sit, three in the garage) and even greater number of books (lining the halls, stacked under end tables). I guess I need to follow DR Elmore's lead and pack some of it off. But who has the time.

TOD:

I had three bookstores I used to frequent in my early book-collecting days.  They were all on Main Street in downtown Cincinnati, within a block of each other.  One was actually an antique store, NEVILLE'S ANTIQUES, which always had a nice selection of books.  Mr. and Mrs. Neville, an elderly couple, ran it and were delightful folk.

Right next to it was OHIO BOOKSTORE, the only one of the three that still exists.  It still has five floors of books, and is run by the same two guys who were there when I going to it in my teens.  One was an assistant manager who eventually bought the owner out and now owns the store.  The other was a helper who wasn't much older than me at the time.  It was an amazing bookstore...besides books, they sold magazines, comics, and old records...lots of 78's, of which I bought my share.  They also had, and still have, a bindery in the basement.  I still stop into the store every couple of months and check out the stock.

The last store, a block up the street, was Bertrand Smith's ACRES OF BOOKS.  Again, a store that had about four or five floors of books, all used.   And, along with the others, it was here I started my collection which now runs to five or six thousand books.  Years later, imagine my surprise to find a Bertrand Smith's Acres of Books in Long Beach, California.  Apparently, Bert had sold the original Acres in Cincy to someone else and moved out to Long Beach where he started a similar used bookstore.  It was an equally great and messy store, chock full of hidden delights.  I think it finally bit the dust a few years ago...but it was a terrific store.

The first book I bought myself was probably either a Hardy boys mystery or a Tarzan book.

I am assuming therefore that anything over 16 at BK's PDX appearance will be satisfactory.  ;)  (We should do a lot better than that).

BK himself can spend hours whiling away the time at the largest bookstore in the United States, Powell's, when he's in Portland.  I think perhaps I took him there when he was here for the Bacharach show and his book reading, but it's always fun to just walk around the cavernous building and "shelf shop."  Portland is a haven for used book stores.

It's my last workday for this week (next week I work five WHOLE days...UGH!).

TOD:

As a pre-teen my favorite bookstore was the Central Point Public Library (Central Point had a population of just under 10,000 then). It was a small library but it is where I first discovered books on celebrities. I borrowed bios on Judy Garland and Jack Benny when I was in the 5th grade

As a teenager I discovered a wonderful bookstore in downtown Medford. I don't recall the name of the store but I would always pick up the newest edition of the WHATEVER BECAME OF...books, along with various other books related to vintage films.

A few blocks over and around the corner was a little used bookstore. My friend Dave and I would hunt down interesting vintage books there. Mostly we would just window shop, but on occassion I would actually buy something. I still have two of the books I bought from there...one is a mystery novel called THE CLUTCHING HAND and it is from around 1918 or so, the other book is a science fiction hardback titled THE BIG EYE from 1961, I think.

Good morning, all!

Congrats on a successful book signing event, bk!

TOD:
Hmm... I was more of a library person than a bookstore one (Many a glorious hour spent at the NYPL's Ft. Washington, Inwood, and Mid-Manhattan branches), but I regularly haunted Chelsea Books & Records and Academy Books & Records back in the day (more for records than books), and I was known to pop in to the downtown Strand Annex once in a while as well. Browsing through dusty shelves in a cool dark room on a hot summer day... heaven, I tell you. The search was always more important than the finds.

Now my favorite bookstores are the used books store THE BOOK BIN which is a large 2 story shop in downtown Salem. Actually the carry both used and some new books. I have found many a grand treat there.

And as JMK mentioned, there is the huge POWELL'S BOOKS in downtown Portland...a whole city block and 3 or 4 stories of used, and some new, books. I go there at least a few times a year.

As I have mentioned before, in Oregon bookstores are as plentiful as coffee shops!

Thanks for all the get-well vibes, folks. They certainly helped. My illness or whatever it was has swung in the other direction. I now have plenty of energy. And since I slept most of the day Tuesday when I could, I couldn't sleep at all last night. Worked on an overdue article until 2 a.m. And I had nothing with caffeine in it. Now I feel like a tightly coiled spring. Ugh. Have no idea what schedule my body is on.

Like DR ELAN, I was more of a liibrary person as a tyke.  I didn't start buying books until my late teens, and then mostly at the drugstore - sometimes people would give me books, but not ones that I was interested in.

My favorite bookstore now is of course The World of Wisdom.  I also like Half Price Books.  For awhile there was a huge book/cd/video store chain....I forget the name of it.  Mostly I order new books from Amazon because it's easier and there is no BIG bookstore around.  I also don't have anyone to go bookshopping with since my sister moved to Seattle - so I don't go much.
Title: Re: BOOK SOUP
Post by: Ginny on October 14, 2010, 09:13:32 AM
TOD - My first real bookstore memory is a place in downtown Dearborn, Michigan.  My mother and I would go to Jacobson's, our favorite department store, and then across Michigan Ave. to an old-fashioned soda shop with an adjacent paperback store.  I loved browsing there and remember buying the ninety-five-cent copy of Gone with the Wind that eventually got me in trouble with the proctors of my SAT exam.  I raced through each section of the test so I could read and she told me I should be spending that time reviewing my answers.

Now, I like the big chain stores and an "independent" in Dayton called Books & Co.  Also, Half-Price Books and the site of our annual AAUW used book sale, where I can go any Tuesday morning under the pretense of helping.

Samuel Foote - who was mentioned yesterday....is most interesting.

Mr Ian Kelly who brought him up in an interview with Mr Peter Filichia (I think DR FJL linked it) - wrote two very good books....CASANOVA and BEAU BRUMMEL.....the latter was one of my favorite books of a couple of years ago.

More TOD:

I forgot about two long-loved bookstores located on South Street in Philly.  The Book Trader is a wonderful used-book store with high shelves crammed with books, magazines, lithographs and old LPs and CDs.  The theater section of books is huge!  And all prices are very reasonable.  It's seldom that I go in to browse and not come out with something. (I keep thinking that the store is on South Street, but they moved a few years ago to 2nd Street.)

And then there is Garland of Letters, a new-age book store that is lovely to just casually browse through the aisles as you relax and listen to the new-age music and sniff the new-age air. The front entrance is guarded by an elephant (who has been witness to many a late night sexual escapade withing that foyer...)

I forgot to mention that I had a visit to my GP yesterday.  I thought it was just to go over my bloodwork but it turned out to be time for a full-out physical.  I'm glad I wore nice underwear.  But the results was very good--no signs of any skin abnormalities, reflexes good, no hernia, prostate was, er--there and ok.  So coupled with the excellent numbers from my bloodwork (with the sole exception of a Vitamin D deficiency), I'm not doing too bad...

(Though I'm suspect of the Vitamin D thing--it seems that every one I know who has had bloodwork done has failed this test.  I think it's a vast conspiracy between the vitamin makers and the medical profession.)

As for the Topic of the Day...

I, too, was a library person. I spent many hours at various branches of the Arlington County (VA) Public Library System, especially the Central Library.

I do remember when the first Borders Books (no music) opened in Northern Virginia at Tysons Corner. That was a very nice store.  It was just so roomy and cozy at the same time, and they had a cafe too! Alas, once Border's decide to expand, they remodeled that location, then eventually closed and relocated.

And thanks for the vibes for today!

We had a good screening for a 10AM weekday morning; people laughing and responding the the right places. And the panel was a lot of fun! There were 3 people from one film: 904, about how Jacksonville has one of the highest murder rates in the country (good thing I didn't know that before I took a walk along the river last night!) and the director of BREAKING AND ENTERING, about people trying to get into the Guiness Book of World Records. Our film was the first one of the festival, and some of the audience came over to the panel later. That had a light turnout, but a producer who has a studio in town came to that, a guy I used to work for 20 years ago! It was great to see him and he may have some work for me early next year.

A good friend of mine (former Turner producer) came to both events and then went out to lunch with me, the B&E folks, my "handler" and the travel coordinator and we all had a great time.

It turned out that I was the most experienced person on the panel ('cause I'm the oldest!!) and really had a lot more to say than I anticipated. My friend said that she loved seeing so much admiration lavished on my work and that I was getting the respect I deserved (that I don't get at Turner, she said.)

Now all I have left is the opening night party and opening night film, and then I'll fly home tomorrow AM. I feel happy and relieved and VERY TIRED! I'm going to sleep well tonight!

Back from a sandwich and onion rings - picked up two packages (including the DVD of the movie I have to watch today).  Have mapped out the Gardenia show and assigned the songs (tentatively).  Looks like we will announce our new title on Monday - normally I would NEVER do back to back releases like this, but I have to get off the release week I'm on and this will let me do it - then our next release would be two weeks later.

Lavin joins the previously announced Bernadette Peters, who will play Sally Durant Plummer. Performance dates are May 7-June 5, 2011, in the Eisenhower Theater.

The Tony winner says she has never worked with Peters, and "I've never worked with Danny [Burstein, who will play Buddy]. I'm thrilled about that."

My vet gave me some medicated shampoo and told me to give Ricky a bath.  I haven't used it because....well, every cat I've ever known hates water, She told me there are cats who love water....right.

So, it's been since Monday and I haven't given him a bath...so I decided to try it and see what happens.   I am now waiting for the Humane Society to come to my door with the police to arrest me because only sheer torture could evoke the howls and wailing that came out of Little Ricky when I dared to pour a little luke warm water on him.    He screeched, he howled, he climbed over my  shoulder and stood on my back refusing to go up or down....

It was a scene I will not repeat. I didn't leave the shampoo on for the full 5 mminutes like it says to, it was just impossible.  I also didn't quite get it all rinsed out so I had to go back with a wet towel and rub him .   He calmed down after awhile and enjoyed a treat of tuna.   He was fine when I left, but man I will not do that again

I've only washed my cat once...I forget why.  She struggled at first, but eventually she realized that she couldn't stop me from putting her in the water.  Afterward, I dried her off as best I could, but as soon as I let her go, she ran very quickly back and fourth between a couple of rooms for quite a while.

I had to give latest and now EX kitty a bath.....she was not pleased, but she let me hold her, and I used a hand sprayer rather than dunk her in the water or have water running around her.....and she knew I was trying to help her.....after the bath she didn't even mind the blow dryer on VERY LOW and NOT HOT.....and a soft brush.....

And then she went away......I am sure she found a very nice home.....but the attitude of the folks at our Humane Society and the.....well ABUSE we took when we returned her - I will NEVER DEAL WITH THEM AGAIN and will return unopened all materials and requests for gifts they send me regularly.

It will go to the Humane Society in the NEXT COUNTY.......and my local elected relatives.....er.....representatives have been notified.....the only thing I didn't do is write a letter to the newspaper.....but I might still do that.

So, we ventured out to our local cinema for a 4:45 showing of Social Network and as soon as the previews started they were accompanied by a very loud buzzing.  Richard went out to the lobby to find someone to address the problem and the movie started.  Said person finally reduced the volume of the buzzing but it still drowned out the dialogue.  Richard left again, followed shortly by the pair of girls who were the only other people in the audience.  I sat in the theatre by myself for a few minutes, then I left, too.  The 4 of us were standing in the doorway when we heard the buzz totally disappear, so we headed back in only to discover that now it was totally out of focus.  It was clear the guy in the booth had no idea what he was doing, so Richard and I went to the cashier, got our money back, and left.

When our town's one and only movie theatre goes out of business, we'll know why.  We should have driven to the Cincinnati 'burbs in the first place.

Angel never liked having a bath, but she would let me do it.  I would run lukewarm water in the bathtub, then go and get her and take her to the bathroom and close the door.  She always looked so pitiful when she was soaking wet.

I remember that theater. Saw some great and some horrible movies there, everything from "Breakfast Club" to "Dune." If ever there were a problem, you just had to live with it. The projectionist was either getting stoned or having sex with someone in the booth.

I used to go to Half-Price Books on McKinney Ave.  in Dallas back in the mid-seventies, long before it became a chain.  It was great bookstore and about two blocks from my apt. at the time.

I was very careful with the bath for Ricky.  I put a towel in the bottom of the tub and had a bowl filled with luke warm water that I slowly poured on his back.  I didn't even have any running water and he still freaked out.   I did get out the hair dryer and the second I turned it on he totally freaked.  But he doesn't mind the vacuum cleaner, so I have a feeling he has had bad experiences with baths.

We used over-the-counter athlete's foot cream (Tinactin or the like). Sometimes the vet would give pills. I don't remember the name. They can be hard on the liver.

And it took a long time to heal. And we had to bleach everything.

Did any humans get it?  How about your adult cats?

And today he is turning into a chrysalis:

We used to catch them when i was a kid and keep them in a "bug house" until they became butterflies and would then release them.  I loved watching it

Our fosters used to get it, but we kept them in a separate room from our own (mostly). If one kitten in the kitten room got it, most of them got it. No amount of washing or keeping them separated in cages mattered.

It is very contagious, and people can get it, too.

Thanks. Laura.  He hasn't been diagnosed yet, but I'm thinking that's what it is. The antibiotics didn't work.  I'm using the cream she gave me.  I'm just trying to figure out how long he'll be contagious so I can hopefully get him out of the room before too long.  Callie is ready to meet him, Boo, not so much.   I've read that adult cats generally don't get it and that if you don't have it by the time there is an official diagnosis, you probably won't get it

It is my understanding that antibiotic cream would make it worse, since you kill the bacteria that would ordinarily keep the fungus and bacteria  in balance.

I am going to keep him in the carpeted room.  I have planned to rip the carpet out of that room for a long time and will do that as soon as I know he's ok.   I'm changing clothes every time I go in the room, washing them in very hot water and drying them in a very hot dryer.  I'm vacuuming every day, washing his blankets every other day and have used clorox one to spray down some of the surfaces in his room.   I am very glad he's only been in one room.   I'll probably throw away his cat bed and toys when he heals

The antibiotics were pills.  She said only three days and if it isn't really healing stop. So I stopped.  The cream is an antifungal

I think you can wash the cat bed and toys in a bleach/water solution and be ok. Bleach will kill it.

I remember using a black light to look for spores.

I haven't had any problem with the fosters we had last year and this year. Our experience with it was the previous time we fostered -- many years ago.

It's been a very long time since I had to deal with it. I don't think we ever really had a problem with our own animals -- it was the fosters that got it.

The vet didn't really see anything with the black light but said that's not conclusive so she's doing the culture to see.  Have to wait 10 days for the results.  I got out my blacklight and didn't see anything.

They say cats under one year are the most susceptible and adult cats rarely get it if they are in good health.

And apparently the little "scare" I had earlier courtesy of my landlord really just set the rest of my day off-kilter. Nothing truly bad happened, but almost every train I was on today was running late and/or slow... Which consequently messed up the timing of the rest of my schedule... Which actually made me forget that I was supposed to go to Carnegie Hall tonight for a concert... :(

Thankfully, a friend of mine called me just after I tried to pick up my ticket at Carnegie Hall - 45 minutes late - and asked if I wanted to go to dinner. So we did.  That was nice.

Hip, Hip, Hooray! DR Edisaurus!

Sleep well.

From Playbill.com: "Three-time Tony nominee Kelli O'Hara and Will Chase will star in the City Center Encores! production of Bells Are Ringing, ..."

Can someone tell me why? Neither seems to fit with any degree of comfort. O'Hara is too perfectly beautiful, Chase too nondescript. maybe if the roles were reversed ...

Even though Kelli O'Hara may not have been my first choice, I think she'll make a fine Ella based on her turn in The Pajama Game.

And I don't think I would ever describe Will Chase as "nondescript". ;)
