Well, you've read the notes, the notes have been fruitful and multiplied, and now it is time for you to post until the fruitful cows come home - they're currently nibbling on some kiwis.

Good Morning!

I just checked my lottery numbers for yesterday... And I won $40 in the Pick Three.  I played my birthday, 826, and 268 came out, and since I had played the "Box" option...  Hmm... Maybe I will splurge on the Amtrak on Sunday up to Bard.  *I definitely don't think I'll be up in time tomorrow/today to grab the bus that is leaving the State Theatre at 8:30am.  No way, Jose!

Of course, there's always the option of a few more 2-for-1 frozen margaritas.

:)

Saturday....working on lines.

Polly Bergen was just guessed as the Mystery Guest on What' My Line.

I like Polly.....good singer.....good game player....pretty....  A gal....not a girl.

And she can act, too!

We must have a report from the Hollywood Show....and photos.  Tell Beverly....oh never mind!

Controversial shows. Hmmm.

HAIR - I loved the music from the first time I heard it, and certainly was in line with its antiwar sentiments.

I was working on a play in Montreal many years ago. Can't remember what I was doing exactly. But it was an English adaptation of a French play about the Virigin Mary. And I think at one point in the story she had her period or something very controversial among those lines. Since this was a very Catholic province there were protests. Well I was the last one out of theater and made sure all the doors were locked and I went for lunch and then onto my classes. Well sometime within the time I left and  tech director came back a fire started and burned down the set. It was classified as one of suspicious origins. They couldn't prove it wasn't arson.

"The Boys in the Band" was controversial when it opened here - not for the subject matter but for the language.  Some words had to be changed. "Screw"is so less offensive lol.

"Oh Calcutta" was unable to open here. I saw it in London and thought it was just schoolboy humour and certainly not clever nor offensive!

"Elephant Man" was also a touch controversial on stage here - full frontal nudity.

I don't remember any controversy with "Bent". I just thought it dull.  But then I didn't think much of "Angels In America" either. (Didn't see it staged though).

Here I am at the office on Saturday morning. A wonderful time was had by all at the official upper west side gather spot, La Cocina. We had lots of room in the basement area. Ears were burning, I'm sure. I had a Burrito Bendito (not related to me) and strawberry margaritas (they were two for one, what can I say). A picture of Rod, Elmore, Jose and me, resides deep in the bowels of Jose's camera, taken just before the departure of R, E, and me.

And now I must begin working.

Later!

Good morning, all!  I've just taken two Tylenol: a necessary conclusion to the two margaritas I had last night with DRs Jose, Ben, TPunk, and Rodzinski.  Ever the cheap drunk.  I need a few more hours in bed, but I have errands to run, people to see, and places to go this morning.

I did listen to WUTHERING HEIGHTS yesterday, and I was disappointed; the duet on the Lesley Garrett album "You Were My First Love" is the only number I really enjoyed.  I also find Dave Willetts' a bit underwhelming: the voice is neither dark nor hefty enough for the brooding Heathcliff.  I can't imagine this whiner either plotting revenge or standing in the rain on the moor.  The orchestrations were nice.

TOD:  Maybe later.

DINO (Kartsonakis) AT THE PIANO!

'bout fell over when I saw that advertised in yesterday's paper.

Glad to hear that fun was had last night (Jose's fault, but in a good way) and that Katrina left our Florida friends alone.

Good morning!

What a long morning it has been here so far. First, I woke up much earlier than I expected to. Second, I read the entire newspaper, another chapter in the Schlesinger biography, and then an entire issue of WIDESCREEN REVIEW. And I've been on the internet for thirty minutes answering e-mails and going to a couple of sites I go to first on Saturday.

And it's still just 9:30! Wow!

I think I was talking about a controversial movie last night - MULHOLLAND DR. I think Naomi Watts got robbed of an Oscar nomination for this film. She was superb and handled every change that the script threw at her with surprising dexterity.

I will be revisitng the film again in a month or so to see how else about it I can fathom. It's a densely packed film.

The staging of both parts of ANGELS IN AMERICA here by Charlotte Rep brought down the wrath of the County Commissioners who pulled all funds from the Arts and Science Council for staging this affront to moral decency.

Naturally, all the controversy this generated caused the plays' entire month long run to be sold out, and I loved both plays and the fighting spirit of arts organizations around town showed in light of the blatant bigotry the Commission was espousing. Fund raising for the next season hit an all-time high to make up for the funds pulled by the County Commissioners. And I got to meet Tony Kuschner who attended an opening night party and the premiere of MILLENIUM APPROACHES.

And I'm in for a quick visit then back to work.

I do remember controversy surrounding Boys in the Band, especially when it was revived by a Gay theatre company in Minneapolis in the late 70s. "Why are you doing this play?" they asked. Unfortunately, it wasn't a very good production but in spite of all the flaws, I do like the play and the movie. I always wanted to play Donald. He doesn't do much in the main section but those opening and closing scenes with Michael are great.

The 1970's revival of WHO'S AFRAID OF VIRGINIA WOOLF certainly caused a lot of controversy at the Yeshivah of Flatbush High School.  One of the boys (I'll call him Keith because that was his name), whose parents had taken him to see the play, took to using one of the expressions for a part of the female anatomy in normal conversation as a result of seeing the play.  One of the young women, at whom he addressed this expression repeatedly, finally had her mother call Keith's mother to ask her to tell him to stop.   Keith pretended to be clueless as to why it was Ok to use an expression like that (I'll clean it up as "angel boobs" for purposes of this posting) on a Broadway stage but not at school, but complied when ordered to do so by his mother.  These days, the girl would have gotten the school involved, but the girl was embarrassed to discuss it with the school's authorities, apparently.

SPOILER RE THE FILM ODE TO BILLY JOE

Controversy also ensued at Yeshivah of Flatbush over, of all things, the movie ODE TO BILLY JOE.  There was much dissatisfaction from some limited but vocal circles about the reason the movie gave for Billy Joe McAllister jumping off the Tallahatchee Bridge - namely, that he was gay.  Even as teenagers, some of us thought this was a terrible message to send in a movie marketed toward a youngish audience.  But this controversy seemed to be limited to our school.

As I've said here, Naomi Watts' performance in Mulholland Drive is one of the five greatest in the last two decades.

BK,
Sorry I was E and T yesterday and didn't comment on the book issue. I would report it to the State Attorney General where he is. It isn't about having damages to sue, it's about comsumer fraud and if he is prosecuted you would receive restitution.

Internet sales are federal offenses investigated by the Postal Inspectors, but the AG would most likely do a referral if that is appropriate.

Good Morning!  Good Afternoon!

:)

After sleeping in a bit this morning, I was treated to a brunch made by one of my roommates.  Faith was really in the mood for pancakes, so she made pancakes - from scratch! - for everyone.  Plus some turkey bacon.  Quite good, and it was nice spending some time with the people I'm currently living with.

I just finished washing the dishes, and now I'm just trying to remember what I'm supposed to do today... If there's anything to be done...

Hi, Jose - What's next on your professional agenda?

Funny you should ask...  I'm meeting with a producer later this afternoon to discuss a project.  Unfortunately, unless they say some "magic words", I'm gonna have to turn it down.  It was great to be recommended for it by a couple of people, but it would basically be fiscally irresponsible for me to take it right now, if you get my drift.  Yes, it would be a great project to work on, and there's a level of exposure involved, but I would end up taking myself out of circulation for the next five weeks or so.  I would only be available one day a week for freelance work if I took the gig.  And, frankly, what I could make in one day of freelancing, I would be making for the whole five weeks.  So...

I also think I'm not the right fit for the piece.  Or vice versa.  Again, we'll talk for a bit, and we'll see what happens, but I'm pretty sure I'll be turning it down.  Ah, well...

Otherwise, I have a few more audition days lined up, as well as the Fall SETC auditions in Charlotte in two weeks.  *Oh, must remember to book my flight!  I'll be pounding the pavement a bit more next week, just getting my face in front of people again.  "Yes, I'm really in New York City now."

I head back down to DC for Damn Yankees at Arena Stage starting November 8, and that will take me through till February 5.  And the spring is "bubbling" right now.  A couple of very nice options to consider right now.  Nice to have the options.

BIG BROTHER SPOILER LIVE FEEDS RANT.

Well April nominated janelle and howie a couple of days ago, and today was the veto.  Ape and Maggot approached Howie/Janelle about not having James play veto for them, so they could backdoor him.  April and Maggie were clear that if they did allow james to play, then they would come after them.

Anyhow howie/janelle agreed to the deal and did not have james play for them.  April won the veto, and now apparently her and maggie and beau and ivette are deciding what they should do.  It does look like maggie is telling ape to use the veto and to nominate james.  But it is slightly crazy to me that they are even having this discussion.  They made a deal with howie and janelle and told them to "trust them". And even though they are liars (maggot and yappy), howie and janelle had to trust them because they knew how much they wanted james out.  I find it crazy that these two cannot keep their word.  I mean they are most likely going to keep their word in the end.  But really they should not need to discuss and re-discuss this, since they already gave their word to howie/janelle.

Btw, janelle won something (a trip) and had a veto necklace around her neck. So they were reporting she won. :(  So for a few minutes i was very happy.

I suppose it would have been quite interesting if ivette had won POV. I wonder if she would have broken off from the other maggots, to secure her, beau and james a spot in the F3.

I started this afternoon with Norma Shearer's Oscar-winning performance in THE DIVORCEE. I had not seen this entire movie before though I had seen the last hour or so of it. The first thirty minutes contained some surprising plot points.

Amazing that Robert Montgomery was in this film and he wasn't one of the two main suitors after Norma's hand. He certainly became an audience favorite very quickly.

After THE DIVORCEE, I thought I'd try stars other than Norma Shearer so I picked ROBERTA. Like FLYING DOWN TO RIO, this is rather a Fred and Ginger movie kind of by accident. They do a couple of dances here, but they aren't really the primary couple of the film. Irene Dunne and Randolph Scott become the primary couple of the show.

Did the Broadway version of ROBERTA contain a fashion show like both movie versions did?

Let me get this straight - fifty-four posts???  This will NOT do, oh, no, this will not do.  We will not be having lazy hainsies/kimlets sitting on their butt cheeks, we will not be having errant and truant behavior, and we WILL be bitch-slapping those who are from here to eternity and hell and back.  Now is not a time for slacking - I haven't mentioned it yet, but we've been having one of our best months, and considering that last August was our fifth WORST month ever, that is extraordinary.  So, let's not drag it all down into the abyss in the last few days of August.  Also, amazingly, we are well on our way to our newest plateau - 140,000 posts, which we've done in record time.  So, up and at 'em, you lazy loafers.  Post like the wind.  Post like a gazelle doing ninety miles per hour on a tricycle.

I think I'm going to save them for tomorrow and instead put in THE PERFECT STORM tonight. That will make a REAL change of pace from these black and white films in 1.37:1 ratio. I'm looking forward to something with widescreen and BIG surround sound.

The Mickey Sinardi Celebrity Show was, as it was last time, pretty much a bust, although there were at least double the number of attendees.  Given the fact that last time there were a total of about twenty attendees, that just doesn't cut the mustard or even the ketchup.  Nick, Pogue, and I roamed around the room, but it was mostly dreary beyond repair.  June Lockhart was there, along with Jon Provost, and two descendents of Lassie.  Chris Atkins was there, coming on to anything that had breasts and a thong.  We talked to Gregory Walcott and I even bought his book.  We talked to Ron Harper, who was very nice, and we had a nice chat with Yvette Vickers.  Margaret O'Brien was there, but Robert Horton was a no-show.  And Pogue and I spent a few minutes with Mr. Jonathan Winters, who asked where Pogue was from and then proceeded to do a five-minute routine in a Kentucky accent, that had us on the floor.

Here is a photograph of Mr. Nick Redman and Mr. Charles Pogue, taken at the actual Mickey Sinardi Celebrity Show.

Back from The Mickey Sinardi' Star Show Spectacular (I don't think it's alliterative enough, Mickey, you should consider changing your name to Sammy) and was it ever a dud.  But BK, Nick, and I had a good time anyway, making fun of everything and everyone... including the three really tacky and bad transvestites sitting behind us at lunch.  Blatantly obvious and they had all chosen more or less the same blonde helmet-hair wig.

While Nick was chatting away to someone, I engaged Johnathan Winters as a fellow Ohioan (Winters was in his Reds baseball cap and still carries his lucky buckeye in his pocket) and he did a rude, raucous, and really raunchy improv for us of a hick Kentuckian coming to the big city of Cincinnati for a visit.

Needless to say, we laughed and laughed until we thought we could laugh no more...and then we laughed some more...

Oh, and the new special edition of The Jerk, a film I don't even care about it.  I had to buy it because I could not believe the gall of Universal Home Video STEALING the packaging joke from The First Nudie Musical DVD (released THREE YEARS AGO) - saying it's a 26th Anniversary Edition.  Can't these stupid cretins think of their own jokes?  Pathetic.  Flattering, but pathetic.

Now, that's something I'd like to have seen!  Jonathan Winters is a long-time favorite of mine.

I enjoyed that KISS ME KATE except when the director cuts from Michael Barresse's sensational "Bianca" at one of the most acrobatic moments of the choreography in order to get a reaction shot of the (uninteresting) actress playing Lois. Ruined the entire number for me.

Thankfully, I had seen the show in NYC, so at least I had the HUGE thrill of that number live to savor in my memory forever.

Hello all, I've been in something of a funk today.  I let myself be talked into going to a Tommy Bolin memorial concert last night. I didn't listen to him in the 70s when he was alive, so I'm not sure why I thought I would want to listen to tributes to him now, but I went.

It started with blues, which I do enjoy but then shifted to a heavy metal band. AHHHHHH!!! I have never liked heavy metal and I know I don't now. All that screaming!  I guess they were singing a song called "Bang Your Head" and I kept thinking they were singing "Burn Your Hair"  Now I could not figure out why on earth they would be telling people to burn their hair.

We took a break and went to a bar that was playing really loud techno. Not a lot of relief for the ears and the head. I ended up drinking more heavily than usual and heading home earlier than the rest of the people I went with.

Yikes!  That's the last time I get talked into that. I've been recovering all day today.  Time to go find some food and have a quiet evening.

TOD

The thing with so many of the controversial films I have seen over the years, is that no matter how wonderfully acted they may have been, or how well done the films themselves may be; I generally have no desire to sit through the experience more than once.

Two films that come to mind are THE KILLING OF SISTER GEORGE and MIDNIGHT COWBOY.  Both are beautifully made films, but I would rather have a root canal than sit though either one of them a second time.

I have a complaint, something that DR Rodzinsky might be able to forward.

The Playbill OnLine Week in Review column (http://www.playbill.com/news/article/94755.html) deals with Mr. August Wilson's health problems.  What I find complainable is the following, the final paragraph in the piece:

Quote
He also proved that there was still room in our theatre for that antiquated figure of decades past: the serious writer. Wilson kept himself above and apart from the more commercial, vulgar aspects of the profession. He concentrated on the writing, not the business. He did not court the press. He ate at the Edison Cafe, not Joe Allen's. He wrote for the theatre, but seemingly was not of it. (He, in fact, lived as far away from the heart of it—New York—as he could: Seattle.) His eye was on the canon, not the season. He offered authenticity, and demanded respect. He got it.

Why, oh why has this been written in the past tense?  Mr. Wilson has not yet died.  To write "He lived as far away..." leaves a sour taste in my mouth.  Bleh.

For me, controversial plays are different, in that I can see them again and again.  Each new director, each new actor, in fact each overall production is different enough that it can touch me over and over again, but in different ways.

VIRGINIA WOOLF was certainly controversial the first few times that I saw it; but, to me, the play is so rich, that each production that I saw brought out different facets of the play that I hadn't noticed before.

As an actor, the most memorable experience I had with a controversial play was when I did SIX DEGREES OF SEPARATION in Tacoma.  It always amazes me that people in Tacoma will drive thirty miles to Seattle and see a play and never bat an eye at the language or theme; but produce the same show in Tacoma and these same theatergoers are horrified.  Every night, we as a cast would wait for one particular monologue in the show, where this character says that he was f^&**d by Paul.  Without fail, people would storm out of the theater, often using profanities at us for using profanities on stage.

I'm listening to Ike and Tina. They're rollin' on a river, and they're doing it nice and rough. An example of a perfect rendition of a song...Tina's vocals are HOT, HOT, HOT and so is the arrangement (can't beat those horns). And one cannot separate the song from the visual of her dancing and shimmying all over the place. Iconic, I say.

Der Brucer is watching a movie on the Sci-Fi Channel, called Pterodactyl.  It's about a group of college students, on a field trip, who encounter one of them there flying reptiles.

Ever notice how coeds in movies are always really pretty, and take their clothes off at the slightest provocation?

I mean, I wasn't really looking when I was in college, but I never noticed that kind of behavior in real life.

I think this means, if you want to meet up with coeds who are really pretty and take their clothes off at the slightest provocation, you should study cinematography.

After listening to two - count 'em, TWO - iconic recordings by Tina Turner ("Proud Mary" and "River Deep, Mountain High"), I wonder if we have ever or will ever have a TOD about songs that we feel would be disserviced by a cover or remake. I know how we all feel about remakes of perfect movies (the "Psycho" remake, for instance), so what about iconic recordings of songs? I, for one, feel that Tina's "Proud Mary" is ten times better than CCR's version, and I've heard several versions of "River Deep, Mountain High" and none compare to Ike and Tina's.

What do you guys think? Sound like a viable TOD?

I actually quite liked Donny's Broadway CD of a few years back. His pop stuff was just awash with sentimental schlock. Dreadful recordings. The originals were way way better.
I prefered the Jackson Five to the Osmonds by far.

I don't detest the Midler and Houston recordings but the earlier recordings by others were better.

I remember a debate on London radio in 1973 as to who had the worst recordings - David Cassidy or Donny Osmond.  Donny won very easily.

Hmmm, I'm toying with the idea of Match.com again.  I haven't dated in a long time and am thinking it wouldn't be all bad to try it again.  I met a couple people on Match.com a few years ago and wasn't real impressed, but the bar scene here just doesn't do it for me....

Oh, I love match.com!  That's the one with Gene Rayburn and Charles Nelson Reilly isn't it?  Maybe they could get Brett Sommers and Richard Dawson to come back and do the show.  But don't ask Elaine Joyce.  She isn't nearly as funny since she married Neil Simon.

Folks around here regularly storm out of the theater when SWEENEY TODD is performed. It always amazes me how horrified folks are by this material.

SWEENEY TODD?  Why?  The throat-slitting?  The pie making?  Certainly not the language.

MONK's season finale was very entertaining and I did not guess the identity of the crime's instigator. But the humor was both terrific while the story itself (which also involved a backstory of Monk in junior high school) was bittersweet and endearing, something this show can do very well on occasion.

bull's eye! TWICE! "A Little Priest" which is supposed to bring down the house for a rousing Act I closer hits some folks as laughing at murder, I guess. That, and the first throat slitting, make many people leave at intermission. And if they come back, some leave later during the "Joanna" reprise.

I then put in THE PERFECT STORM. Well, the DVD transfer is pretty perfect with stupdenous Dolby Digital EX sound and a sharp picture (maybe too sharp as some of the CGI used for the sea storm is a bit obvious).

I was tremendously moved when I saw this in the theater. I didn't know how it was going to turn out, and found the ending almost unbearably sad. Perhaps knowing ahead of time what was going to happen, I didn't experience the same emotions again.

I had forgotten the entire Cherry Jones-Karen Allen subplot and also the sequence when the Navy helicopter went down. With more than an hour left to run and George Clooney's ship already in the midst of the storm, I kept wondering how on earth the movie was going to run for another 70 minutes, but those two additional stories kept the action fast and furious,

Enjoyable, but I think tomorrow's DVD will have to be a bit more upbeat.

I followed THE PERFECT STORM with two more WILL & GRACE episodes. I skipped over the entertaining Thanksgiving episode (where they each spend 20 minutes per family) so I could get to "Jingle Balls" that I talked about yesterday. And I admit that I played Larry Sullivan's scenes several times each. He is beyond precious. And during the show, he does some tremendous turn outs, splits, and stretches, so it makes me think he might have been at one time a real ballet dancer.

Wow!  Sorry if I sounded stupid, but I guess I just never thought of it that way.  Having seen the play version of SWEENEY TODD, which made me a little sick to my stomach; the musical with its soaring score and themes just seemed to take the story out of the realm of horror for me.  I guess I am more jaded than I thought.

If you get an audience who comes to a musical expecting something along the lines of OKLAHOMA or THE SOUND OF MUSIC, something like SWEENEY which has not only that blood and cannibalism but also a score that makes you ill at ease from the first blast of that factory whistle, you're going to get walkouts. As much as it pains me to admit it, audiences in my neck of the woods aren't always the most sophisticated of crowds.

(We had walkouts during LA CAGE, too, if you can believe it.)

George Benson had a successful version in 1977. Whitney's was 1981.

Gary Morris topped country charts with it in 1983, BUT. . .way back in 1980, Jane Olivor recorded it on her album THE BEST SIDE OF GOODBYE.

Was Benson's the version used for the film THE GREATEST?

On Jason's proposed topic, I've actually enjoyed quite a few covers of songs more than the originals.

My favorite cover has got to be Naked Eyes' "Always Something There to Remind Me."   But I was also nuts about Gloria Estefan's underrated take on "Turn the Beat Around."  I wish I could figure out who did it, but there was a version of "Funkytown" that was done by an all-male band that I found preferable to the original as well.  Sister Sledge's "My Guy" is also a personal favorite.

And I got a kick out of what David Lee Roth did with some standards in that they introduced them to a new generation.

And lest I be scorned further, I won't go into my admiration for all things Osmond and Cassidy, both David and Shaun.  Except to admit that I still can't do a New Mexico tax return (and believe me, there are plenty of opportunities to do New Mexico tax returns) without thinking of the silly riff in the Partridge Family's "Point Me in the Direction of Albuquerque."   And Donny Osmond's "Soldier of Love" and Shaun Cassidy's cover of "Da Doo Ron Ron" were major favorites when they came out.   (Or were they major favorites of mine when I came out; wonder if that had anything to do with it?  :)  )

Sweet bull o' the woods! A day of entertainments...

Went and saw 40 YEAR OLD VIRGIN on 34th street, where movies are still merely $9.50. How depressing the previews were for coming attractions, I must say. One film revolves almost entirely around workers at a Bennigan's-type place doing awful things to food before serving it. Then a bunch of other bad-looking things that I hope to never see.

As for the feature itself. Good laughs, kind of unique tone, alternating between sophomoric and heartfelt adult comedy. By "adult" I mean like the George Segal movies my folks used to go see on dates. It kinda went on about 20 minutes too long, but Steve Carrell's performance is quite good. Much preferable to his work on the office.

Then the Punk and I wandered a bit, and went to Virgin MegaCrowd and bought us some DVDs, two of which we proceeded to watch, one of which was ALL THAT JAZZ, which we shall save.

THE BOATNIKS, directed by BK's former collaborator Norman Tokar (not to be confused with Norman Taurog or Norman Z. McLeod). There was every chance that the movie would fail my expectations, but it did not. For three reasons: Phil Silvers, Robert Morse and Stef Powers. Don't get me wrong, the movie is dumb. Too much of the mindless slapstick that was de rigeur in Disney films of that time. But Morse and Powers have a real chemistry in the few scenes where they can act together, and BK's pal Silvers does his thing well with some funny asides and obnoxious bravado.

Wally Cox has a small role that could really have been interesting in another studio's hands.
