Well, you've read the notes, the notes were immersive and like no notes you've ever seen before, and now it is time for you to post until the immersive cows come home.

I haven't read a Stephen King novel I've enjoyed in years.  I detested the novel It.  I feel he became such a "hit" writer that editors stopped trying to reign him in.

CARRIE: the movie was a vast improvement over the novel; the musical a mess
'SALEM'S LOT: best vampire novel since Dracula; movie so-so
THE SHINING: Thanks to DR Ginny, the first King novel I read and it scared me to death; I thought the previews for the film were really great but the movie seemed to be a movie for people who look down on horror films
THE STAND: Too damned long although the opening section about the plague was the most frightening thing I've ever read
Then it's all a mish-mash.

I did think THE MIST, STAND BY ME and THE SAWSHABK REDEMPTION were wonderful film adaptations of three novellas.

Jane, to answer your question from last night, I did indeed have the correction for reading vision. I now use a progressive lens for driving, but don't need glasses to read a book or work on the computer. I had a pair of reading glasses made since the surgery, but the surgeon didn't get the Rx quite right, so I don't bother with them. At some point I may want to have new readers made, but it's optional. I purchased a pair of off-the-shelf readers from Dollar Tree for those times when I need to see something really small. I used to be able to see tiny print without any glasses, but I can't do that now. I could use a magnifying glass, but the $1 readers are more convenient.

I spoke to my Medicare agent. Apparently, my insurance company now has a plan which is very similar to my current plan and it'll be easy to switch over. I won't have to sweat over finding a new plan.

DR George put it quite graphically last night--bad news, good news, bad news. Now it's bad news that's been mitigated. Is there an emoji for that?
Title: Re: IMMERSIVE
Post by: Jane on October 06, 2016, 05:26:39 PM
OK, so really more middle of the road vision.  I can read small print and a book, if it is in my face, without glasses on.  I don't wear glasses to read at night.  I but my glasses on to walk to the bathroom if I get up.  I suppose I don't really have to but I feel safer doing so.  With my contacts in I can see distance, don't need glasses to walk, drive, or use the computer.  I need reading glasses to read and seeing small print is difficult.

I find your situation interesting as I might need to make a decision one day which way to go.

It sounds like you don't need glasses to walk, just to drive.  Oh, movies and tv I need my contacts or regular glasses on.

I don't need glasses to walk, but in most cases I'd put them on.

Before the surgery, with my "old" vision, I wore my reading glasses most of the time. I'm on the computer a lot and my readers gave me decent "room distance." That's what I wanted to preserve. I'm now more or less a minus 2, which gives me decent reading vision and decent room distance. If I want things really sharp, I can use the progressive.

For me, this was the right decision, though it wouldn't be for many people. It's more expensive this way. You can purchase readers cheaply, whereas my progressive was quite expensive, but that was partly because I chose an expensive frame.

DR Jeanne, good news about the insurance.  We are beginning to look at other options besides Medicare..... GROAN!  We thought we were done with this.

I'd recommend looking for a Medicare insurance broker. Mine has been a big help, but he's only licensed in California. It costs nothing and can save you a lot of time.

The Medicare Advantage plans are usually good value.

Yes, I used to spend a fortune on my glasses--and they didn't always work out, either.

Have you looked at Warby Parker? I like their frames. I'd be leery of buying a progressive from them, though they do guarantee them. I have single-vision lenses from them, which were fine. $95 for frame and lens--a bargain! You can buy just the frame for $85. Free at-home trial, which I like. Much easier than trying frames on in a store.

You don't notice that colors are less vibrant, because it happens so slowly.

But after you have the surgery the colors are just amazing.

Before I had the cataract surgery, with my contacts in, I could see everything at a distance, but needed cheaters to read anything close up.

After cataract surgery, it is like having permanent contact lens in my eyes.  The distance vision is amazing, but close up I have to use readers (2.50) in order to read.

Bottom line is that I love that the surgery worked so well for me.  It is kind of like having laser surgery without the expense.

I think my favorite soup would be clam chowder.  Second would be split pea.

I used to make a great homemade split pea soup.  It took two days to finish it, but damn, it was good.

That's great!  Thanks for sharing.

My eye doctor offered me the option of having a lens put in one eye so that I could read close up with the one eye and distance with the other.

I know a couple of people who tried that.  One is my aunt who really liked it (but now she doesn't wear contacts any more), and the other is a friend who didn't really like it and gave up on it.

Perhaps I'll go have clam chowder on the 'morrow, but where?  I was thinking about sautéing some chicken and making a little pasta to put it over.  Decisions, decisions.

Did your friend have the lens surgically removed?

He  said she doesn't wear contacts anymore.  I expect that means she did monovision with contacts vs surgery.

Oh...I didn't read your post correctly.  I was thinking that they were regular (removeable) contact lenses.

He didn't say anything about trying contacts first.  He just wanted to make sure I had the extra $1,500 it would cost for the lens.

That is why I think you were smart to decline monovision:)
