Good afternoon. I took off early this morning for a quick hike, only to find out that the park is closed until 11 a.m. for a bike race.

Now, why in the world would they close off a HUGE city park on a Saturday, only to open it for a race when it is expected to be 96 degrees?

My biggest surprise happened in 1985, when Stephen Sondheim won the Pulitzer Prize.

This is a fantastic story!!!! :)

Several months later, I got a phone call from a strange reporter from my hometown newspaper.  His name was John Griffin, and he wanted to know all about the Pulitzer.  It seems that two friends of mine in my hometown had contacted the newspaper with the information.  I still believe that it was done less on my behalf and more on promoting themselves.  I had no intentions of saying anything; I felt that was Steve's business if he wanted to say anything, not mine.

I reluctantly spoke to John, told him I was very reluctant to say anything, told him the events, and fretted about it. I lost two friends who were angry that I was upset, and about a day after the phone interview, I called his editor and begged him to kill the story.  I had worked for the newspaper as a critic between 1973 and 1977 or so, and the editor was a person I liked very much. Thirty years later, our DR JohnG is still a friend, one of the best, and I believe this is the fullest account of the 1985 Pulitzer Prize I've ever made. After 30 years, I'm still quite proud of my accomplishment.

This one about the nice guy reporter is also good. :)

DR Jane I am jealous that you can dress in shorts when we still have snow here!

I'm not in shorts today though it is still warming up.  We did errands this morning and I hobbled around.  It is soooo beautiful out and I want to go for a proper walk.  I'll probably be stupid and go about the same distance I did yesterday.

I am somewhat improved as I can walk around the house more comfortably, without shoes on.

I am thinking that my TOD may be this movie thing......I shall know more later.

Otherwise....probably my first play being produced.  I just rewrote something that I had written a year or so before.....and dropped it in the mail to a local theatre that was have a competition.

Two months later, I got a message to call that theatre.....my play had won a slot in the summer schedule.....that was in May of 1985.....nearly thirty years ago.....and I have had a wonderful time working at that theatre now and then in various capacities and have made some wonderful friends along the way.

The two theatres that I call home - Putnam County Playhouse and Phoenix Theatre in Indy (where I won the competition) are very different places to work - but are a very important part of my life.

Good vibes the movie thing becomes it.  If not, your play story is still a good one.

Wonderful story DR ELMORE thanks for sharing.....and DR JOHN G has a featured involvement as well!

And after killing his story, DR John G is still a friend.  What a good fellow!

The story wasn't killed, Elmore. I just didn't write about the Pulitzer. I did write about a little piece about hometown boy in the big city, as I recall.

At least you had a new adventure.  Will you return to this trail?

DR ChasSmith, I hope you have fun seeing ARSENIC AND OLD LACE tonight.  Aunt Martha was my first major stage role, when I was a junior in high school.  Looking forward to your report!

After I DO watch it, I'm going to cancel Netflix, even the streaming.  I just don't watch any of it.  I have too many other options for movie/TV watching to pay for something (and have been paying for a LONG time) that I don't use. :P

What a great story, DR elmore!!

I agree!  I thought that I would have to wait for your memoirs before ever I heard the story.

Well, I'm off to my sister's house for family time, then I'm off to the theater.

Have a good rest of the day, all!

Do you have a smartphone?  If so you can use it to see what you own before purchasing it.  Goodreads has made it easier for me to see what I have read before purchasing a book.
