I went to the oil change place EARLY today and the 10 minute change only took 45 minutes instead of two hours like last time.

:) The garage I take my car to was started precisely because of a long and unreasonable wait for an oil change

Jane, to answer your question from last night, I did indeed have the correction for reading vision. I now use a progressive lens for driving, but don't need glasses to read a book or work on the computer. I had a pair of reading glasses made since the surgery, but the surgeon didn't get the Rx quite right, so I don't bother with them. At some point I may want to have new readers made, but it's optional. I purchased a pair of off-the-shelf readers from Dollar Tree for those times when I need to see something really small. I used to be able to see tiny print without any glasses, but I can't do that now. I could use a magnifying glass, but the $1 readers are more convenient.

I spoke to my Medicare agent. Apparently, my insurance company now has a plan which is very similar to my current plan and it'll be easy to switch over. I won't have to sweat over finding a new plan.

DR George put it quite graphically last night--bad news, good news, bad news. Now it's bad news that's been mitigated. Is there an emoji for that?

OK, so really more middle of the road vision.  I can read small print and a book, if it is in my face, without glasses on.  I don't wear glasses to read at night.  I but my glasses on to walk to the bathroom if I get up.  I suppose I don't really have to but I feel safer doing so.  With my contacts in I can see distance, don't need glasses to walk, drive, or use the computer.  I need reading glasses to read and seeing small print is difficult.

I find your situation interesting as I might need to make a decision one day which way to go.

It sounds like you don't need glasses to walk, just to drive.  Oh, movies and tv I need my contacts or regular glasses on.

DR Jeanne, good news about the insurance.  We are beginning to look at other options besides Medicare..... GROAN!  We thought we were done with this.

I don't need glasses to walk, but in most cases I'd put them on.

Before the surgery, with my "old" vision, I wore my reading glasses most of the time. I'm on the computer a lot and my readers gave me decent "room distance." That's what I wanted to preserve. I'm now more or less a minus 2, which gives me decent reading vision and decent room distance. If I want things really sharp, I can use the progressive.

For me, this was the right decision, though it wouldn't be for many people. It's more expensive this way. You can purchase readers cheaply, whereas my progressive was quite expensive, but that was partly because I chose an expensive frame.

I have expensive toric contacts, expensive progressive lenses (the lenses were very expensive), and medium priced reading glasses.

I'd recommend looking for a Medicare insurance broker. Mine has been a big help, but he's only licensed in California. It costs nothing and can save you a lot of time.

The Medicare Advantage plans are usually good value.

Yes, I used to spend a fortune on my glasses--and they didn't always work out, either.

Have you looked at Warby Parker? I like their frames. I'd be leery of buying a progressive from them, though they do guarantee them. I have single-vision lenses from them, which were fine. $95 for frame and lens--a bargain! You can buy just the frame for $85. Free at-home trial, which I like. Much easier than trying frames on in a store.

I can't order  lens without trying it on.  I am simply too, too difficult to fit.

By fit I mean frame and measuring the center of the lenses since I wear them slightly dropped on my face.  I also do the reading portion differently.

Well, it's time for me to leave work and go to rehearsal.  Tonight is the last rehearsal before Sunday's VERY EARLY rehearsal at 8:30 am. :P We had to have it that early because of some peoples' schedules later in the day.  Anyway, I'm off and will be back later.
