Thursday morning greetings!  I'm up early to putter a bit before leaving for the Dayton 'burbs to meet a friend for lunch.  Linda and I both began our careers at the local Miami University campus, met our husbands there, married and had babies about the same time.  We sort of lost touch when I left there to be a stay-at-home Mom 25 years ago and recently reconnected via email.  She's retired, too, and we have a lot of catching up to do.

Good morning, all! I went to bed at 9 pm and slept rather soundly until my neighbor arrived home around 4:45 am. I swear he's a vampre.

Today is another heavy Encores! day. I have a great time with Joshie and we work well together, so that makes it better than some of my previous work experiences. I've got to do the piano cut in "Ashmolean Marching Society" and, after that, I've got a whole lot of minor fixes.

Last night I got a very kind email from one of my colleagues who was just axed and I need to respond this morning before I head out. I have a bit of tuidying up to do as well. I'm having dinner with Steven LaBrie tonight and this apartment is not fit for company at the moment.

DR TCB, I am sorry you couldn't make the callback.

BK wrote last night:  "The cynic in me believes this has been planned for weeks and that it was drawn out like this (announcing that there would be an announcement, and then endlessly leaking information) so they could get as much publicity as they could, because, let's face it, sales were dropping every week, publicity had dwindled because people were so tired of hearing about it, and this was the perfect way to jack up interest again."

Well, of course, this had to be known for several weeks.  The name of the new writer has been talked about for weeks now.  But the negotiation-out of Julie Taymor's involvement had to have been a complex, prolonged negotiation.  Of course, the removal of someone like julie Taymor from a show she's worked on for all these years would be several weeks at least -- but all the while, until papers were signed, exit agreements finalized, etc, with the knowledge that it could potentially not be finally agreed upon.

(Not to make light, but heck, a recent negotiation we as ordinary people were involved in for the underlying rights to a novel took about six or seven weeks, maybe more, and what a relatively simplel deal that was, for a four-page document, one in which there was no contention.)

Also, in every case, the news breaks first from someone who spoke to the newspapers against the producer's wishes on condition of anonymity.  Then , the story gets covered again when the producers reveal what actually happened.  Blame the press for the double-coverage of every single thing here, and the press must be sensing that the public wants to read it from clicks on their sites, etc, or they wouldn't be doing it.

I just did.

So, you actually tried dinaguan? Good for you. I guess.

There are a couple of variations, but it should have contain bits of liver.  -And, yes, tripe is part of the pudding/stew too. -And I still have the sense/smell memory of my mom boiling the tripe on Saturday morning's when I was a kid. That smell most definitely woke me up.  Sometimes, bits of pig's ears are also added.

As for the menudo.... That's one of my favorites.  Again, there are a couple of variations.  Was yours chicken or beef based? -And if it was beef-based, did it include tongue?

Was the third item Ampalaya con Carne? -Bitter Melon with Beef?

As I have learned, dinaguan is much better served over rice. By itself it is a bit bland, I thought, and a little bit sour. But over rice it was quite delicious. I have had it twice now.

There was a taste of liver in something that I ate the first time around, but I don't recall what. It was very slight, not overwhelming.

The Menudo was either beef based or pork based, I am thinking. Probably  beef. It was wonderful.

Ampalaya con Carne is indeed what I believe the third dish was. I would not call it a favorite, but I would have it again.

I have gone back to the restaurant 3 times now, and have tried different items each visit. I look forward to going again.

So far I have come across only one dish that I did not care for, and that was a simple dish of beef and onions. It was rather dull and had very little flavor. Possibly I needed to put some sauce on it. My favorite was some type of curry chicken.

DR MBarnum - Dinaguan is made with vinegar. -The acid from the vinegar is what lends the dark, almost black color to the blood as it cooks down. I can honestly say that I haven't tried it in years(!!!!!!!), but when my Mom makes it, it definitely doesn't smell "mild".

As for that beef dish, well... Filipino food can tend to be on the bland side, and some of them are simple sautés of meat and vegetables. That's why there's always a dish of soy sauce, white vinegar with garlic, black vinegar and/or pepper vinegar on the table.

And, yes, rice is a must with any Filipino dish. Lots and lots of rice. -How else do you think my hair ended up the way it is? ;)

Well, how about some appetizers? Lumpia (Fiipino eggrolls)? Chicken chicharrones? Chicken mami (chicken noodle soup)?

Sour is a big component of a lot of dishes. It usually comes from lime or calamansi juice and/or vinegar. Some cooks like a touch of sour, some like a lot.

I'm up (after a good night's sleep with completely weird dreams), and have answered all e-mails, made a couple of important decisions about doing what we did with Promises - a second edition of a sold out title - because if I don't do it I've already heard another label will, without credit to me or my engineer, which is completely unacceptable to me, but just happened with Mad World.  While I know it will take some time to sell these, I don't mind having them available like Promises is, and Promises continues to sell nicely.

Yes.  We don't own anything once we sell out of a limited edition licensed title.  It's shameful - I actually haven't seen their booklet but I talked to someone who has and he most certainly would have mentioned it to me if we'd been thanked.

Yep.  Back when we did the CD we were offered the exact same thing - after I heard it I said no - this is a score I don't need in mono sound (at that point it was not only mono, it was substandard quality - how much they've fixed it I have no idea), taken from the rear channels of the DVD (very disingenuously described in their release blurb, I must say).  For our bonus tracks we used all the stereo music from the film that was clean and usable and we made it sound great - as far as I know, they are using those tracks and our complete LP mastering, which was great.

That exact same thing happened to me when I ordered something for the library where I work.  I just had to reorder it and everything was fine.  Very strange.

Oh no! :o Mouseketeer Great Annette Funicello Suffers Smoke Inhalation in Home Fire (http://www.comcast.net/articles/entertainment-eonline/20110310/b230378/)!

Quote
The blaze at the Encino, Calif., home started in the early morning hours and was first reported around 7:21 a.m. Firefighters were quickly on the scene and managed to subdue the flames in about a half-hour.

The 68-year-old Funicello was taken by ambulance to a nearby medical center, along with an unidentified man and woman said to be her husband and nurse. One of the women, believed to be Funicello, who suffers from multiple sclerosis, was in a wheelchair. All three are reportedly in good condition.

Swimming has made by nails look bad so yesterday I put layers of nail polish on them.  After I swam today I noticed the polish on my right hand was basically gone while the left hand was fine.  It must be the way I swim with my arm under the water causing the polish to rub off, still I find it strange.

My cats are really funny.   Callie has this game she plays when it's time for her medicine (three times a day, close to the same time every day)   She'll walk in the room and stare at me or do something to get my attention.   Then she'll wait until I get up to go get her, then the games begin.  She goes behind the couch, runs out the other side, runs through the hall, waits to be sure I'm following, then runs down the basement where we circle the couch again.  If I don't catch her down there, she runs up the stairs and then up to the room I'm working on way upstairs where she lets me catch her.   Whew!

Sometimes we go under the dining room table (well she does and stays just out of my reach)  If I don't play along, she waits for me to go looking for her and then starts again.   Sometimes she can be bribed with treats.  If it's been too long, she'll wait and let me pick her up

Boos trick is she mopes if I don't walk up and greet her and pet her head.   She'll sit totally still until I do that. Then she stretches and comes out to play.  If I don't do it, she doesn't move.

Ricky has now deemed himself to be guard of the household, protecting from all  invaders.  He runs from window to window watching the deer, cats or whatever is outside.  He eats all the bugs that get in.  Sometimes watching him, I expect to hear  "To Infinity and Beyond!!!"  He seems to be quite proud of his new job...until he decides to sit on me again

Here's where the water comes in -- it came through the pipes that come under the road from the water treatment plant across the street.

Then it comes out of the pipe here. It gets sprayed like this for some technical reason:

Then it goes through these holes to be piped out to the ponds:

Here is a pond:

One more:

Then after it goes through all of the cleansing: the chemical treatment, the oxygenation, waterfalls, filtering down through the layers of sand, etc., it is piped out to the Gila River bed to create a natural riparian habitat.

I have been wanting countertops for 30 years. I save all year and make one home-improvement.

Last year's project wasn't too expensive: I refinished the interior doors. Sometime before that, I refinished the kitchen cabinets.

The roof, pipes, and windows weren't exciting. The backyard makeover was fun. And the countertops will make such a difference in the appearance of my tiny kitchen.

The guy they showed on the promos for the Channel 2 News taking the ice bath did NOT look like he needed to lose weight.  I wonder if they chose him in the ice bath for the promos in order to get people to watch.

I'm speaking at a seminar in Des Moines in April.  Rock of Ages will be there while I'm in town, so I'm going to go see it again.  It's not a great show, but it was a lot of fun.

I'm surprised someone hasn't done a comedy routine on all the goofy things the Wisconsin Senate could pass while the Democrats are in Illinois.  Not commenting on the real issue, butsince  they only need the supermajority on budget bills, they could make all kinds of goofy proclamations, laws etc and they'd pass.

Just wait until Saturday Night Live this weekend.

They showed the ice bath thing on one of the morning shows.  Did they show him sitting in a tub reading the paper?

The backsplash is going to be the same material as the countertop. You realize that if I picked a different backsplash that the combination would have clashed like a casino carpet or something.

Good Evening...

I'm currently watching the coverage of the earthquake - 8.8! - and resulting tsunami in Japan...

Truly horrifying.

Sending prayers to the people of Japan.

-And the news also reports that the tsunami will affect other countries such as Russia, Guam, Taiwan and the Philippines.
