Good morning!

We started out with very overcast skies and the chance of rain, but all that has cleared now and once again we have blue skies and moderate temperatures.

Commercials ARE a great way for working actors to pay bills between gigs. And sheer heaven would be finding a commercial (as Ann Miller did with the Great American Soups ad) that showcased her talent as well as providing income.

Alas, I guess those are few and far between.

I have some DVD dubs to make today for folks as well as enjoying some DVDs and other video entertainment.

And TCM is showing THE INCREDIBLE SHRINKING MAN this afternoon so I can finally burn myself a DVD of it.

Our CD collection is such a mess right now that I've no chance of referring to it to identify my classic faves.

Has anyone out there heard of Alan Hovhaness?  His Symphony #50: Mount Saint Helens is quite beautiful, and startling.

DRSWW, I've read several things about Hovhaness but I don't believe I've ever hear a note he's written!  The same is true of Roger Sessions.

DRGeorge, I love your new avatar.  Thank you.  I  thought your Carmen Miranda was a great Halloween avatar, but looking at it constantly, I couldn't take anything you wrote seriously.  However, I'm curious:  do you have photos of yourself in other performances?

Not many, but I have some.  The problem is that they're buried in boxes somewhere, but now that my housemate has totally moved out and cleaned his room, I can use that to get stuff out of my bedroom and extra bedroom and (hopefully) start to go through it all...at least, that's the plan. ::)

I'm up, I'm up - finally had a great night's sleep, albeit with some might peculiar dreaming.

I like everything I've heard by Hovhaness and I've heard a lot.  How could I forget to mention Gershwin and Bernstein.  For the former, I love Concerto in F, for the latter I love The Age of Anxiety and the Jeremiah Symphony.

My birthday is, indeed, one week from yesterday. Sorry for the corn-fusion, BK. But thank you for the early wishes. :)

I absolutely must do my laundry today if I expect to have any underwear for tomorrow. I'll be back...

Favorite classical pieces (most, but not all, have been mentioned):

Beethoven: Symphony no. 9 "The Choral Symphony"
Bernstein: Fancy Free
Bizet: Carmen
Britten: Turn of the Screw (I saw this at the Vancouver Opera and it was one of the most incredible opera productions that I had experienced)
Copland: Rodeo
Gershwin: Piano concerto in F, Porgy and Bess
Glass: Einstein on the Beach, Akhnaten, Satyagraha (Satyagraha is my favorite of the three)
Orff: Carmina Burana (when I was at Western Washington University, we performed this with all the choirs and orchestras of Western, as well as with the Whatcom Choral Society and the local community orchestra.  Heidi Grant Murphy had just graduated from Western the year before and came back to sing the soprano part.  It was incredible!)
Ravel: Bolero
Sondheim: Sweeney Todd ;)
Domenico Scarlatti: Sacred Choral Works (I'm on this CD!!)

You can't read it on the picture on Amazon.com, but this was performed by the Western Washington University Concert Choir under the direction of Dr. Robert Scandrett.  I was in the choir and we recorded this CD over a weekend in May of 1989 at Western's concert hall.  It was quite the experience!

Click HERE for the cduniverse.com listing.  It has a lot more information. :)

Sondheim: Sweeney Todd ;)

Actually, DRGeorge, I think SWEENEY TODD is the best american opera written in the past 40 years.  I cannot stand Phillip Glass, however; his music, and Steve Reich's, makes me quite jittery and irritated.

Shubert's 8th
Rachmaninoff's Concerto #2

Excuse me, but while I'm going through the sheer torture of viewing footage, what in tarnation IS going on here - no one in the jernt at 12:30 - 48 posts at 12:30, two posts in ninety minutes?  This will NOT do, I'm afraid.  Some people I could name better be getting off their butt cheeks or there will be hell toupee.

Well, I hate to read and run, but I have to be at the Murder Mystery Dinner in about twenty minutes.  This is the final performance of that epic, MURDER AT KTMP.  Its passing will not be mourned for long, or by many.

Borodin's "Prince Igor: has also been a favourite. I suspect it is a favourite of DR WFO as well.

I've always enjoyed the "pop" take on classics.
I guess Conniff's "Concert In Rhythm" introduced me to a few Classical themes.

I play the Waldo De Los Rios "Classics"  quite often and also have a James Last collection of similar themes.

I even have the Cd of "B Bumble & the Stingers" rocking up the classics, and of course the "Kokomo" collection.

DP Colin's favourite is still "Sparky and his Magic Piano"

"Jose and his Magic Piano"  is also very popular.

Good Afternoon!

Greetings from New York City!

It was a perfect day for a drive - cool weather, clear skies, and there was still some nice fall foliage to look at along the way.  There was a very brief spot of traffic, but, again, it was very brief.  The only "weirdness" was when I went to fill up my tank at one of the service stations along the turnpike.  Since they are refurbishing a couple of the gas stations, the turnpike is now three gas stations "short".  So, this means that the remaining stations are getting a bit more business than usual.  Thankfully, all the pumps were manned and opened.  *And at least the New Jersey Turnpike authority put lots of warning signs up along the way: "No Fuel Service Between Exits 4 and 8" - or something like that.

...But I'm here.
