Well, you've read the notes, the notes had both tricks and treats, and now it is time for you to post until the cows come home - they're eating their little bite-sized candies right now and singing songs from a Broadway MOO-sical.
-
And the word of the day is: CAPITATION!
-
Don't forget - put your clocks back one hour before you go to bed.
-
Topic of the Day: I don't think I ever had an all-time favorite Halloween, but I it was pretty cool when went trick-or-treating and we got the full sized candy bars. That was always a nice surprise. :D
-
Don't forget - put your clocks back one hour before you go to bed.
Except...I'm about to go to bed right now, which is too soon for me to do it. The next time I go to bed, I will. ;)
-
Good night, all. :)

Don't forget - put your clocks back one hour before you go to bed.
Except...I'm about to go to bed right now, which is too soon for me to do it. The next time I go to bed, I will. ;)
Exactly! Late Saturday night/early Sunday morning is when we get an extra hour to sleep - and not necessarily of sleep.
-
November!

I don't know from Halloween right now. I am too tired. I will have to think about it at work today.

DR CILLA LIZ - is that the book that posits the theory about the keel of the Titanic? I saw the documentary and was not convinced.....but maybe the book has more information.
-
Keel of the Titanic - my new opus about the theatrical entertainment on the ill-fated ship
-
TOD; favorite treat to get on Halloween when I lived on Avenue H/East 14thnStreet in Brooklyn was the homemade candy-coated popcorn balls that someone way down the block used to give out - but my folks did want me to look very carefully through anything that wasn't pre-wrapped because there were some nuts giving treats out there, so i had to pull the popcorn apart before eating
-
Pull The Popcorn Apart Before Eating - I think I will use this title for my memoirs....or at least the audio CD version.
-
We never got anything so creative, DR FJL. And I used to hate getting apples.
-
Off to work. Oh well.

DR CILLA LIZ - is that the book that posits the theory about the keel of the Titanic? I saw the documentary and was not convinced.....but maybe the book has more information.
Yes it is. The documentary dive came first and was when they found the bilge keel. The book also covers their dives to the Britannic (Titanic's sister ship) after that discovery to check out a theory they had as well as other research they did after finding the bilge keel including the information provided by the archivist I wrote about yesterday. I don't really want to go into more detail so the book can speak for itself to anyone who reads it.

DR JANE - the chapter of the book about your great uncle through marriage is called "The Millionaire's Captain" he was the favorite captain of the rich and famous who went back and forth across the Atlantic.

OK, time to move a few things out of the room they'll be working on today. I really hope they are on time. I get a feeling they will be, but who knows. Laters

Favorite candies when I was a kid?
M&Ms

There is too much leftover Halloween candy in this house.

Good morning, all! I'm running late and I have to get down to Toyland to use the piano for a bit before I hit the NYPL at Lincoln Center.
I had to stop for a second to respond to another rude Facebook comment from out DR singdaw, but such ate the trial and tribulations o being an artiste.
Most of my early childhood Halloweens I remember quite fondly up o about the age of 12 when the Hawkins family, whose children were the neighborhood partners-in-crime of my brother Tom and me, moved away. I remember my mother and my Aunt Jenny making popcorn balls for my mother's favoritetrick-or-treaters, the crazy dad down the street who ran around in a sheet terrifying all the kids who rang his doorbell, the literal parade of kids in costumes since our subdivision was built around 1950 and the baby-boomer quotient of young families was quite high, going into the local department stores to look over the plethora of Haloween costumes and candy. After the Hawkins boys moved away, we stopped getting into so much trouble in the neighborhood - I can't put all of the blame on them; Tom and I were quite trouble-prone without them - and it was time to outgrow the Halloween madness. My brother Randy was about a year old then, and from the time he was two or three to age seven, when I went off to college, I mostly walked him around while he played trick-or-treat.
-
I remember the last year of trick or treating for DR Sandra. I made a cut-off date of 12 for trick or treating, as I think teenagers are too old. She was "Dorothy" and left a red glitter trail down the sidewalk.
-
Saturday morning greetings! It's an information-waitressing day and we're expecting hordes of children later today for some Harry Potter festivities. I only have to do this IW stuff 6 more times after today.
-
another rude Facebook comment from our DR singdaw
It's only because I love ya, Larry! :-*
-
Good morning!
It's going to be in the 70s by this afternoon! That means I'll likely open the doors and windows and let the sunshine in (a HAIR reference).
-
Eight o'clock seems to be my new wake up time.
-
It's gray outside, but that may burn off. Then again, it may not.
-
Will we never get to page two?
-
So it is written, so it shall be done - page two.
-
I don't have any specific Halloween tale to relate. I do remember that we walked all over town, not just in our neighborhood, and we were fearless back then. There seemed to be no fear of weirdos snatching us up or putting pins and razor blades in candy. It was all a much more innocent time back then. My parents never locked the doors of their house or cars either. And my dad left the keys over the dash of his car his entire life!
-
I'll be working on ROMAN HOLIDAY today, the second of three classics in Paramount's new Centennial Collection. Again, once I've watched the film, I'll be eager to see how it compares to the original release which I have.
-
And I got another mother lode of review titles yesterday. Two more from Criterion including their version of THE SPY WHO CAME IN FROM THE COLD (I have the previous release and always though it looked just fine). I also got three more TV box sets: STAR TREK - The Original Series, Season 3 in a very elaborate package, HAWAII FIVE-O - Season 5, and the final season of THE ODD COUPLE.
-
Eight o'clock seems to be my new wake up time.
I got up at 8:10 today which is LATE for me. I wish I could sleep to 8 most mornings. It just doesn't happen often.
-
Not only did we walk all over our neighborhood at Halloween, my parents NEVER came with us - it was always just the kids. Yes, a very different time.
-
When did various HHWers stop going out for trick-or-treat? I stopped when I got to junior high school (seventh grade). It just didn't seem cool to do it any more.
Of course, there were other things for teenagers to do. My school had sock hops (boy does that AGE me!) for Halloween, and it was a lot of fun dancing in dressed-up socks. There were prizes given for the most creative socks, etc.
Such innocent fun times back then!
-
Well, it's time to head downstairs and check the mail. Then, I will start working on fixing something for lunch.
WBBL.
-
I was talking on the phone with one of my favorite people, and two little girls came over to visit. We are going for breakfast.
-
Good Morning!
I'm up, I'm up... And even though it looks like it's a beautiful Fall day - outside - here in NYC, I think I need another hour or two of down time here at the apartment before I head out. -I mean, I had heard all the stories and seen all the TV movies about how hard being a parent really is, but... ;)
-
Ooooohh!!
It turns out my brother, Jay, is not running the marathon tomorrow. However, his girlfriend is. Jay would have registered this year, but he wasn't sure if this weekend would have been clear work-wise, so... In the meantime...
I believe he's going to see Avenue Q this afternoon, and then we're all going to get together for some dinner with some other friends somewhere on the Upper East Side (puff-puff). Should be a good day.
-
As for the Topic(s) of the Day...
Since my brother, Mike, was a Halloween Baby, we always had nice Halloweens when we were kids. My Mom would host a small birthday party for kids before the trick-or-treating started, and then once everyone was back home, then there would be another party for friends and the "adults".
The are only two Halloween's I specifically remember. The first one was a cast/Halloween party that I went to when I was playing for the D.C. premiere of Baby - 22 years(!) ago! Just a great group of people, and my last-minute "crazy doctor" costume really came off well.
And then there was the huge shindig that was held when I was on the road with the bus & truck of Anything Goes - which was eight years ago (another election year). I guess it was another "cast party", but we had planned it for weeks. We all started getting into the spirit by playing "Secret Satan" for a few weeks before, and then they had arranged for us to have a costume party in a large hotel suite. Everyone was costumed - I was "Imelda in Exile" - They took all my shoes!. Our company manager even convinced the producer to spring for the food and refreshments - and the extra clean-up fee for the hotel.
*Alas, the following morning, we learned that a snow storm was coming in, so instead of having a day off to recover from the night before, we were back on the bus by 10:00am. -And we managed to miss the 17" of snow!
-
bk - Are you working with "JA"?
-
The best, and my favorite, Halloween involved no costumes whatsoever. It was a weekend trip to New York for the precise purpose of seeing Betty Buckley at The Bottom Line. I hadn't even planned to go until the last minute when I received a personal letter from Ms. Buckley inviting me to come. . .at first, I believed it to be a mail-out from her website, until upon reading it through, it mentioned the night of her concert at Westminster College and the bonding which took place.
As always, Ms. Buckley delivered a great performance and had VarlaJean Merman as a guest star; they even tackled a couple of CARRIE songs. . .and yes, she spotted me in the audience and acknowledged my presence. Afterwards, she thanked me personally for making the trip to see her. (If you've seen the photo of EvilTwin and I with Betty, it's from that night).
BUT, that was on October 30.
On October 31, I called Rainbow & Stars to see if there were any remaining seats for David Campbell's closing performance (nigh onto the closing of R&S itself). So I managed to get into the one of the finest cabaret performances I have ever seen. While David was performing, I enjoyed an Amstel Lite and a huge piece of cheesecake. This was when David's act included his Mandy Patinkin impression and his near-to-definitive "Waters of March."
Chatted with David after the show, reminded him that I was on the Yahoo group and the one who shared his birthday. Also had my first encounter with MaryAnn Lopinto. . .Lupinto? In spite of Ms. L., it was a great evening and the perfect end to a Halloween weekend in NYC.
-
TOD - Since I spent my childhood in Detroit, my Halloween costumes had to be warm - no gossamer princess outfits for me! One year, we even had to be prepared for snow, boots and all.
One of my favorite memories, though, is from the Halloween when DS Rob was just over a year old. I don't believe in taking babies trick or treating, but he was having such fun greeting the kids at our door and he seemed to "get" what was going on. We just plopped his Mickey Mouse ears on his head and took him to a few neighbors' houses.
As for candy - it's all about the chocolate.
-
As for Favorite Halloween Candies...
Yes, I've always loved all things chocolates, but I was always fascinated by the chewy, taffy-like candies: Bit-O-Honeys, Mary Janes, Now & Laters, Peanut Chews, etc. Oh, and Pixie Stix!
-
Hmm.. I've been for a few hours, but haven't had breakfast nor lunch yet. Guess I should remedy that.

Good morning all. I thought I'd share some pics of Toby's first Halloween.
First, his Halloween theme sleeper. If you can't tell, it has images of candy corn on it.

-
My favorite Halloween memory is from about 1968. I was Casper the Friendly Ghost and I went trick or treating with the Dutch family, The DeGraff's, from across the street. We piled into Mr. DeGraff's Studabaker station wagon and drove over to another neighborhood (there were not many houses on our street). Upon our return I and the two DeGraff girls spread out our loot on the floor to check for razor blades. LOL!
-
And then, his "bear" costume. The costume is actually a traveling suit that he wear quite often when it's cold out, but since it had the ears on it, and I'd bought the brown one instead of the blue, it could pass as a costume as well.

Back from the long jog and must now do errands. CUTE BABY!!!
-
Oh how great to see a pic of Ann and Baby Toby!
-
My favorite Halloween memories are from when I was very young. I remember going as Peter Pan one year, with my best friend David as Captain Hook. I remember the year we had four inches of snow on the ground, but it didn't stop us. I was a clown with a wig and a snowsuit on. We were tough kids back then.
-
I do remember the lovely sense of freedom we had. In a small town before the age of paranoia in parents, we wandered all over the place trick or treating. No parents waiting in a car at the end of the block, no trick or treating in the mall because it's safe. They just opened the door and set us loose. Those were nice times.
-
Toby is asleep on my arm. If I move it, I risk waking him up. I must move that arm to reach my coffee. Now I decide how much I really want the coffee...

Good Afternoon!
Well... I guess I'll get some food sometime today. But at least I've cleaned, taken care of some phone calls and had some nice conversations with the roomies.
*And my brother and his friends are seeing Phantom of the Opera this afternoon instead of Avenue Q. None of them have seen it before, so.. It's a good thing.
-
DR Ann (and Jed) - CUTE PICS of a very CUTE BABY!
*Although, I think the caption underneath the "bear" one should read: "But I thought you said you never post a pic of me in this outfit on the web?!??!" ;)

Oh, today is the last Member Preview Day of the new Miró Exhibit at MoMA (http://www.moma.org/), so I guess I'll spend some time there looking at the paintings and "anti-paintings" before meeting up with my brother. -Oh, and I can also get a dish of the roasted brussels sprouts with pomegranate seeds in the Cafe!

You already submitted this post! You might have accidently double clicked, or tried to refresh.
I attempted to post a response to DR Laura's post:
I remember the last year of trick or treating for DR Sandra. I made a cut-off date of 12 for trick or treating, as I think teenagers are too old. She was "Dorothy" and left a red glitter trail down the sidewalk.
And above her quote was the previous post from DR elmore. I have no idea why they both showed up in the quote box or why it states I already quoted either post.
So DR Laura, my response:
12! I was almost 18 the last time I went. :)

Now it is working correctly. I like the red glitter trail :)

DR Singdaw, thank you.
Sherlock slept on the floor most of the night, I think he was warm with the booties on his feet. We won’t leave him alone so he can’t scratch. I heard him licking at 5:00 (I had been awake since 4:00, an improvement over the night before) and spent a little time on the floor with him.
Off to clean the blood he left on the carpet last night.

Two months 'til my retirement is official and I'm having to master a new software program for our online live-chat reference. So far, so good.
-
DR Ginny, have fun. They are going to have a difficult time finding someone to fill your shoes.
-
DR Ann, I saw that this morning-so sad. I remember as the boys got older we would say to skip houses if no one in the group new the people. We did check the candy when we got home for rips or holes & tossed it those, or I did. While we were out the only candy thought safe to eat was if we knew the people. That was the plan anyway, not sure how well we stuck to it.

Back from errands. Just found out that Jill O'Hara, original star of Promises, Promises has joined our merry Bacharach troupe. She'll be recreating Whoever You Are, I Love You, along with doing I'll Never Fall In Love Again with Tony Roberts.

Their favorite thing to do seems to be grabbing the glasses off DH Jed's face and flinging them away. He seems amazingly deliberate about it. too.

Ah - the law of unintended consequences at work:
My 7 year old just learned about gay marriage. Not from his school or teacher, but by the Yes on Prop 8 ad on radio while carpooling to school. He asked me about it and I gave an age appropriate answer. I have no doubt that many other kids will learn about the gay marriage thanks to prop 8 ads. I hope the theocrats realize the irony ...

EIGHTH-GRADE BOY SENT HOME FROM SCHOOL FOR JESUS CHRIST HALLOWEEN COSTUME
Saturday , November 01, 2008
PARAMUS, N.J. —
Dressing up as Jesus Christ for Halloween turned out to be a problem for a northern New Jersey boy.
Alex Woinski, an eighth-grader at West Brook Middle School in Paramus, was sent home from school on Friday because of his costume.
Alex, who has shoulder-length brown hair, wore a white robe, a red sash, sandals, a fake beard and a crown of thorns.
His mother says Alex was told he could keep the costume on if he removed the beard and crown of thorns, but he declined.
Superintendent James Montesano says the district doesn't want students wearing costumes that could be distracting.
Alex's mother is Catholic, and his father is Jewish.
He recently celebrated his Bar Mitzvah and is studying Bible scripture, according to his mom.
A. The Superintendent's comment is inane - almost all costumes, by definition, are distracting.
B. I wonder if a student dressed as the Devil would be allowed?
C. Will a savvy adult have a chat with Alex about the problems of unintentionally offending others?
This is a "teachable moment" that will no doubt be lost.

DR Edi, the kitty photo is sweet. The bedding they are on looks warm & cozy.

Back from a jaunt to the post office to mail packages to DRs JRand and Elmore, and a stop for lunch at India Star and next door to look at the Bollywood DVDs and CDs. Only bought a few. And then chatted with the owner and a couple of Indian customers about how surpised they were that I liked Indian movies.
The owner told them that I have more movies then he does in his whole store.

Now I am sipping decaf coffee and eating some Indian sweets. Yum.

Today we celebrated a 90th birthday. How nice to have friends and family all come to celebrate and tell stories while the guest of honor is alive to hear how much she is loved.

Thank you, DR George!

I just "rescued" a few plants from a homesite that is going to be demolished in the next day or two.
I wonder if there is a plant equivalent of a game warden?

My favorite Halloween memory is 16 years ago, when my DH (who wasn't even my DBF, yet I always secretly hoped that one day he would be) went to a party at my workplace, hoping I would be there. I was there with a friend who had moved in with me that day after his girlfriend kicked him out. I told my DH that Stephen had moved in and then jokingly asked "When are YOU moving in with me?" He looked me straight in the eye and said "I have my suitcase packed and it's in the car". I laughed, but it turned out that he was serious. Both of them came home to Marietta that night but Stephen stayed in the guest room.
The rest is history.

Wouldn't satisfy these folks:
One commissioner suggests that if nudists prefer voting with no clothes, they can vote absentee. But nudists claim voting and their lifestyle share one thing.
"It's about freedom," Fox insisted. "People take their civic duty seriously and in many cases [nudism] is a very serious part of their lifestyle."

For those who remember former DR Panni, Anna has a new televsion film coming up on the Hallmark Channel beginning on Saturday, November 15. The film is entitled ACCIDENTAL FRIENDSHIP and it stars Chandra Wilson and Ben Vereen.
If you go to the Hallmark site http://www.hallmarkchannel.com/publish/consumer/home/shows/accidental_friendship.html
And click on THE STORY, and then click on EXCLUSIVE ON LOCATION INTERVIEWS; there is a nice interview with Anna as part of the story.

I'm home from work now. The Halloween party has probably begun; after my tables were turned, bussed and whatevered, I helped move them all out onto the deck so that the deejay could set up and the party could begin. Believe me, if it weren't for this gosh-darned sinus/respiratory infection I would have liked to have stayed for the party. As it was, I had a great night of waiting tables and providing help to new employees.
Now I think I shall watch a movie or veg out in front of the tube.
Or, maybe I'll just surf around and end up back here.

Good Evening!
I'm back at my apartment after having quite a nice day out and about in New York City.
I did indeed make it down to MoMA to check out Joan Miró: Painting and Anti-Painting 1927–1937 (http://moma.org/exhibitions/exhibitions.php?id=3993). However, since I had yet to have breakfast, brunch or lunch, I decided to grab a bite to eat at Cafe 2 (http://www.moma.org/visit_moma/restaurants.html) before heading into the galleries.
I had a delightful trio of bruschetta - prosciutto, spicy broccoli raab and tuna... And some chocolate gelato too. ;)
Then it was up to the sixth floor to check out the new exhibit...
-
Well... The works of Miró have always sort of puzzled me. Yes, I know that he purposely deconstructed and abstracted his "figures", but after reading various writings and critiques, a lot of his "radicalism" just seemed a bit put on, as if he was showing off in a sense. Well... I'm still not exactly sure if he was truly trying to be that radical.
The exhibition covers a decades' worth of paintings, collages and "objects", and it does offer a glimpse into his process and progress throughout the course of that decade. I was actually caught off guard at just how all-encompassing and large - twelve mini-galleries! - the exhibit was, and I'll have to make a return visit or two to take it all in and properly digest it.
The one image - well title - that sticks with me is: "Man and Woman in Front of a Pile of Excrement". ;)
-
Then it was off to meet my brother, Jay, and his girlfriend, Maria, over at their hotel. Once we met up in the lobby, we then cabbed it over to the East Side to meet up with our friend Steve and his wife, and their seven-week(!) old baby girl, Grace. Sooo cute.
*And I learned that Maria moved to San Diego and moved in with my brother a few months ago. When did that happen?!?!?! I thought she was still living in Philly. However, that explained why they both flew in from San Diego this week. Duh!
-
And i had a Philly Cheese Steak for dinner tonight at the Theater Row Diner. It was very empty at 6:15 but really filled up by about 7.
-
The diner, that is, not the sandwich.
-
Since Maria had to do some carbo-loading for her race tomorrow, we cabbed back over to the Upper West Side, and had a nice meal at Al Dente. As we were eating, we started noticing more marathoners coming into the restaurant... I don't think I've seen more requests for "More bread, please" before. ;)
Before they headed back to their hotel, we headed up to Cafe Lalo so that Maria could pick out a few things for her post-marathon Treat. :)
*Oh, and our cab ride over to the West Side happened to coincide with the fireworks in Central Park tonight (for the marathon). Beautiful!
-
DR singdaw - Sorry to hear about your home woes. I hope things end up being more salvageable than they seem right now.

I spent the first part of my evening watching the rest of ROMAN HOLIDAY. That ending when the princess finally realizes who her two companions actually are and then gets their assurance they're going to keep mum about it always leaves me with teary eyes and a lump in my throat. One of the great go-nowhere love stories.
-
Paramount ported the bonuses from the 2002 release of ROMAN HOLIDAY (except that Edith Head featurette which was on the SUNSET BLVD. set) and added a bunch more, all of which were fun and informative. Got a quick tour of Paramount's Costume Department which was only 5 1/2 minutes long and could have gone on for much, much longer showing off costumes from some of their pictures.
-
And I concluded my evening watching the last hour and 15 minutes of LIVE AND LET DIE on Blu-ray. As I said before, the movie looks and sounds smashing on Blu-ray, but that's one Roger Moore/Bond film I liked more when I saw originally it than I do now.
-
The next film I have in the review queue is SABRINA, but I may take tomorrow to watch the next Criterion movie Fanfan la Tulipe. It doesn't come out until the 18th of the month, but watching it will exercise a different set of movie-watching muscles than rewatching SABRINA which I've seen a dozen times or more. We'll see how I feel tomorrow.
-
Ben Affleck on SNL - wow, just wow!

I'm heading downstairs to bed now.
Don't forget to set your clocks back an hour!
Good night!

Ben Affleck on SNL - wow, just wow!
Although, four skits in so far, and all of them should have been cut down by a few minutes each. I could not believe how that Keith Olbermann sketch went on and on and on..

Just amazed by Affleck's immersion in character, though.

Home from a masquerade party. I was a dog. LOL, it was an easy costume. I'm not happy with the make up I wore though, so I don't think I'll post a photo of me.

I did have a good time. No one recognized me at first, which I like. Now I am sleepy. Juan will be back at 10:00 AM to finish sanding and texturing, so I better get some sleep. Oh yeah, we get an extra hour tonight

"Where your whole life is behind you" or something like that - Hey, I resemble that comment. :)

Hope this is not political, but I don't think McCain's SNL Weekend Update material was up to what had been written for Palin when she was on.
Well, I think it was an off night, in general, for "SNL". Moreso than usual. -Even David Cook - of "American Idol" fame - was pitchy during his second song.
*However, I was sort of surprised to hear some of the audience reaction to Senator McCain's appearances. I don't believe Governor Palin was subjected to that.

Without making a statement here, I think doing Saturday Night Live for Ms. Palin and Mr. McCain trivializes the office they're running for, but that's just me. And yes, I'd say the same thing if Obama and Biden had appeared on the show.

I will be glad when this election is over and the telephone harassment stops.
Well, starting Wedneday the race will be on for your Senate seat (and if McCain is President, or chooses not to run, the Priamry could be exciting).

Back from the Gardenia. For supper, I had a shrimp cocktail and salmon in hollandaise, a little rice and some green beans, all very tasty.
-
The singer got through the show without too many gaffes, and about sixty percent of the show really worked well. All the laughs were there, but she frequently didn't capitalize on them and would drop energy. That was the biggest problem - the inability to address one of my key notes, which is that every time a song is over you have to re-engage the audience with the patter, which means you don't stand there trying to remember where you are and/or just stand there and let thirty seconds go by without talking. Every time she fumfered like that she lost what was an easy and captive and demonstrative audience. Happily, she had someone tape the show, and all she has to do is watch it and she'll see every instance of her dropping the ball. And she'll also see that when she picked up the energy and pace how well it worked and how much more responsive the audience was.
All that said, considering she hasn't performed in five years probably, she did very well - and the act really worked structurally, has a lot of laughs (a few of the laughs surprised even me - I knew the lines I wrote were funny but they really landed beautifully), and it tells a nice story. She needs to get a few shows under her belt and she'll be fine, as long as she learns from tonight's show. I think it was really good for her, and the reaction from the audience was swell. The songs are well chosen and well ordered and arranged. And the long version of Arthur's Song that I created was the best thing in the show - it tells an entire story of a budding romance, right through to to people moving in together - I did it by breaking the song up with patter in two sections.
-
She needs to get a few shows under her belt and she'll be fine,...
Seems you earned your money.
