DR Ginny, when my father was in the hospital for the long stay before his passing we just happened to have trips planned-one short & one long-as well as company arriving.  Both trips were pre-paid & the company was coming if we were here or not.   It really added to the stress of the situation, for us as well as our friends.  If other people has not been involved we would have canceled all our plans.  Somehow it all worked out and the distractions were good for me.

;D  I suppose being a year older than you at the time I saw the movie is a good exclamation as to why I didn't scream or cry.  I remember I wasn't nearly as thrilled with the movie as every one around me.  I'm sure I had nightmares that night, and for years later thanks to the flying monkeys.  Maybe they are the reason I have never been keen about monkeys.

Margaret Hamilton in green make-up wasn't half as scary as the witch in SNOW WHITE!

She was if you were less than a foot away from the huge screen when you saw her.

I remember clearly two movies as a very small child; I couldn't have been more than 4 or 5, but I'm not sure which came first.

JOHNNY GUITAR (could this have been the first stirrings on my gay gene?) I remember my mother with me seeing this is Monroe, NC, a small city about 20 miles from my hometown.

TARGET EARTH which I remember scared the life out of me. I was clinging to my brother as the robot advanced on the heroes on the rooftop at the end. I saw this is a movie theater my uncle owned (but didn't manage).

I'm pretty sure I wrote about Target Earth in one of the Kritzer books.  It was the first sneak preview I ever saw - my parents took me in 1954 or thereabouts to the Baldwin Theater.  I ran from the theater in terror when the robot appeared and lost a thong (not the underwear, the shoe) in the ivy outside the theater.

The gold lame bathing suits were worn today, and the boys were an eyeful.  I'll try to get a photo tomorrow.

The run-through was good despite the costume problems - we're doing damage control, but the costume designer, how can I put it kindly, is a peckerhead and totally left us in the lurch.  We'll be okay, but it's going to require the new gal doing a lot of work between now and Thursday.

Jose, thank you for the beautiful photo of NY.

We watched the food channel last night.  I kept laughing at the OVERSIZED food items.  Have you ever eaten one of those BIG food items where if you finish it all you get it free?  I wouldn’t be surprised if you have.

We also watched most of the diner episode which was very interesting.  Keith loves diners.

Thanks DR Jane - I just wish I had taken that photo.  However, I do have a bunch of photos of the Reservoir taken at different times of the year.   I just need to downsize them for posting.  -A curse of the ever-increasing gigabytes.

As for oversized foods in general...  Well... I have been to some places that "warn" me, "That's a lot of food.  Are you sure you don't want to share?"  Well...  Joe's Inn in Richmond makes an incredible baked spaghetti.  Steve and I would usually split it and be very satisfied with our meal.  However, there were plenty of times when I would just finish the whole plate - and there were plenty of others who could do the same.  Now, at Stella's, her baked spaghetti started off with one, one pound box of spaghetti being boiled for the single portion(!).  Well, I think I finished one of those by myself.  Once.  Then I started taking leftovers home, and would have a few meals for the week.  ;)

Oh... The couple of times I've been to Junior's here in NYC, some of the waitresses have been shocked that I've finished a full ice cream sundae or piece of cheesecake by myself.  Well... Although, they've also been shocked when two of us have shared a dessert and left the plate clean.  It's all about pacing.  ;)

However, I don't think I've ever been to one of those "Finish This, Get It For Free" places before.  However, I do remember finishing a "Pig's Trough" at Farrell's.  -Ah, how I miss Farrell's.

And I like the "Diners, Dives and Drive-Ins" show too.  Just more places to add to My List.  ;)

TOD: I was sometimes dropped off at the Culver or Meralta theatres with my friend Jan.

Every Saturday Keith used to walk or ride his bike to one of the two theaters.  He lived across the street from Hamilton.

Once I could ride my bike without having to be dropped off I usually went to the Palms or the Picwood theaters with friends or my siblings.

DR Noel - Glad to hear that your process for Such Good Friends is going so well.  ;)

Seriously, I just hope I'm able to catch a performance of Such Good Friends - or any other NYMF show - since my schedule right now is more or less determined by my Mary Poppins work.  -I'm just gonna have to try my luck with day-of-performance ticket purchases.  I do love Brad Oscar (I wonder if his sister, Victoria, will be coming in for the show?), and I worked with Dirk Lumbard a couple years ago on a production of The Music Man.  We've run into each other on the street every now and then, but I haven't seen him on stage in years - and it's not like he hasn't been working.  And Holmes was in All About Us up at Westport too - Is he keeping a pictorial rehearsal diary for your show?

The Thong and the Ivy....isn't that an old English folk song?

Hmm...  I wonder if Roger Quilter did a setting of that?  Or maybe Peter Warlock or Benjamin Britten?  ;)

Although, I do believe I've spotted a "thong in the ivy" during my jogs around the Reservoir.

;D

Sitting in the front row watching those big old screens made it feel as if you were right there with the actors.  I was near the back of the theater for the flying monkeys.
