My work project today is the Blu-ray version of GOMORRAH. I watched and reviewed the DVD version last week, so today's work should be easy: just rewatch the film in high definition and check on the resolution status of the bonus features (which I've already watched and written up). The film is over two hours so I won't get a huge amount of time this afternoon to watch things for fun, but I will have this evening to play before primetime TV starts.

I began watching VERTIGO last night upconverted, and I must say it  looks just beautiful upconverted. Sure, the Blu-ray version (if it ever comes out) will be great, but this is the next best thing and something I can easily live with until Universal decides it's time to put out some of their Hitchcock inventory on Blu-ray.

Good morning, all! I have to run down to Toyland this morning, which wouldn't be so alarming if I hadn't had a rather frightening nightmare last night about a huge subway explosion and a villain carrying bombs. I'd take the bus but I don't have the liesure this morning. On the health front, the cold is over, I think.

After that, a trip to the NYPL at Lincoln Center, then back here for more edits. Around 5:30 I have to head into midtown to meet a friend for dinner and then attend the NY Pops Johnny Mercer concert. I still haven't decided if I will try to get a ticket for GIRL CRAZY for tomorrow night.

Genoa.  I Think!

Well, yesterday was a very strange vacation day.  I went in to have a little lunch.  The soup was some strange concoction with shrimp and tofu, so I passed on that item.  Instead I had a slice of pork loin and some mashed potatoes.  I decided to skip the pasta and the salads.

After lunch, I decided to lay by the pool for a while.  I stayed out there for about a half hour.  I really wanted to go change into my bathing suit and sit in the Jacuzzi; but the idea of going down to my cabin, changing clothes, and then coming back up on deck sounded like too much work.  So, I grabbed some cranberry juice and returned to my cabin.  I fell asleep for about two hours and when I woke up, I knew that I was done for the day.  So I closed the drapes, put the DO NOT DISTURB sign on the door and climbed into bed.  I had strange dreams that were very complicated and exhausting.

I finally got out of bed this morning at 9:00 a.m.  I feel a little shaky, but better than I did yesterday.  So, I had some breakfast, and I am now off to hopefully explore Chris Columbus’ home town.

Well, I returned after a two hour climb through the streets of Genoa.  It is a lovely city, but as so many of these Italian cities are, it is built on the side of a hill.  Not really sure where I was going, I decided to walk.  After several hours of hiking, I made it out of the Terminal.  Seriously they tell you it is a nice relaxing twenty minute walk to the business district, but they fail to mention that you first have to hike down all the docks, into the terminal, out into the square out front, and then finally to the street before you can begin your twenty minute walk.  So, I walked and walked and still never seemed to get anywhere important.  I did find a fast-food Chinese take out, several small grocery stores, and lots of souvenir shops.

Apparently, the anti-smoking campaign has not reached the City of Genoa.  It seemed like every single shop that I thought of entering had a proprietor standing in the open doorway puffing on a cigarette.  So I kept walking and walking.  There were a great many little alleys that wandered off up into the hills.  I tried going up several of them, but I didn’t seem to find anything incredible.  I saw lots of churches, lot of police officers, and a lot of military people on the street.  Finally I found myself back at the Terminal again, and since I was still feeling queasy, I decided to stop for the day.

Once I had settled in for the afternoon, I ran into some good friends that I had met (either John and Carol, or Connie and Jim; I can’t remember which).  They told me all about this incredible tram that ran to the top of the city for a breathtaking view of everything. (Why don’t I ever ask questions before I leave the ship???)  I considered going back out, but it is already heading towards four o’clock and my good friends (J and C or C and J) could not really remember how to get to this tram.  I went back down to the main shore excursion desk, but the lady had already departed with her stack of maps of the city.  I checked with the young lady at the Reception Desk, who hadn’t the slightest idea what I was talking about.  Damn, damn, damn.

Tonight I believe I will be retiring early to avoid the drunks.  They are having a La Dolce Vita party on Deck 5 beginning at 9:30 that is complete with a champagne tasting bar, a single malt tasting bar, and an assorted martini tasting bar.  I hope none of these people decide to try all three tasting rooms.

Sadly, I realized while typing this postcard, that this is my last stop in Italy.  Tomorrow we dock for two days in Monaco and then head to France and then Spain.  Wow, these first five days at sea have really flown by – especially when I slept through one of them.

I thought it was a great episode.  I love it that they wreak the havoc right up front and then you can watch as the pieces are put together.   The perpetrator was a neat twist I didn't guess at until it was made perfectly obvious when the person was described by a man in Sacramento in response to Jane's questioning.   Very very creepy from then on.

I saw Mommy chewing Santa Claus
Underneath the Christmas tree last night.
I snuck up without a peep
Behind Mommy, that Zombie creep,
Now she’s biting off Santa Claus’s cheek.

When I saw Mommy chewing Santa Claus
Underneath his beard now turning red,
Oh what a laugh we would have said
If Daddy weren’t already dead
While Mommy chewed on Santa Claus last night.

Good Morning!

I'm up, I'm up... And I just took care of a slew of "I'm sorry I didn't get back to you sooner, but..." emails. A good chunk of my frustration this past week has been caused by some very slow response times from various people and organizations.  A bunch of people who said they would call "right back" never did; and another bunch of people who said they would respond to my emails right away, did not. Or so I thought.

Since I hadn't checked it earlier, I decided to see what was in my Gmail Spam folder, and lo and behold, there were about 20 emails in there that were NOT spam.  -The really weird part was/is that some of those emails were "replies" that were part of "conversations" I was having.  In any case...

All done.

DR TCB - I hope that "Mussolini's Parade" is not as bad as "Montezuma's Revenge".

Are there hand sanitizer stations set up all over your ship?  Are the staff handing out anti-bacterial wipes when you enter the dining rooms?

*On a related note, I would also suggest seeing the onboard doctor, however, if you happen to get diagnosed with "something", you could end up getting quarantined in your room. It sounds like you're already being responsible in regards to your own health as well as the health of your fellow passengers, so... Unless you start feeling really sick, well...

Some writers out there are calling this season's "Survivor" the best ever.   I wholly and totally disagree.  It seems contrived and rigged.

And if you don't believe that concept, look at last night's vote count...how could the votes possibly have been evenly split (i.e. one for her, and one for you, one for her and one for you..) until the second vote which went exactly the same except for the last two votes.  And did anyone notice in the first round that the first three votes for "Nat" seemed to be in exactly the same handwriting?????

SO VERY CONTRIVED.  I may never watch the show again.

As for the Friday Media Check...

CD - Mihaela Ursuleasa, "Piano & Forte" (http://www.amazon.com/Piano-Forte-Ludwig-van-Beethoven/dp/B002JJE0GU/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&s=music&qid=1258737568&sr=8-1) - This is her debut recital disc, and it's quickly become one of my favorite listens.  It's quite a varied program: Beethoven, Brahms, Ravel, Ginastera and Constantinescu. Some very beautiful and fluid playing.  Her version of Ravel's "Gaspard de la Nuit" may lack a bit of "terror", but it's certainly one of the most musical out there.

Swingle Singers, "Anthology" - Which is a 4-disc collection I found down at Academy Records - brand new and still wrapped - for only $8.  ba ba ba boo da dee doo ba ba ba...  :)

Bush the Elder was President when my parents celebrated their 50th anniversary.  I don't remember whom exactly I called--maybe Orrin Hatch, but I want to say it was Jake Garn--and asked if I could get a card signed by the Bushes congratulating my parents.  In a couple of weeks, lo and behold a beautiful little note and signed card came congratulating them.  I saved it for their big dinner celebration and brought the house down when I announced that because Bush was very busy, he had had to choose whether to teach Dan Quayle how to spell 'potato' or send a card to my folks.  I then pulled out the card and gave it to them.  :)

Before  a gig,  the bandleader calls the girl  singer over to him and  tells  her, "Tonight, when we do 'Night and Day,' I want you to sing  the  second verse first, and then break into the bridge one bar earlier than usual. Transpose the bridge up a minor third, but then back  down  again for the last three bars of it. Then add a 5/4 bar going  back into the FIRST chorus, singing on only off-beats. During the  sax solo, go to the bridge a bar-and-a-HALF too early, interrupting  the solo, finish the first verse, go to the coda a bar late, and  then keep  singing for a full 3 beats after the band has  ended."
Her eyes widen and she says, "That's  way  too hard, I can't do all that."

He says, "Why not?  You did it last night!!"

Before I left on my errands, I watched the finale of PROJECT RUNWAY.

After seeing the collections, there was no doubt in my mind who would win. I didn't want this person to win, but the collection was clearly superior to the others in terms of complexity, workmanship, and style (despite its monotone quality).

The person who finished third actually had more pieces I liked than the other two finalists (including the 13th look which I thought was exquisite, one of the best designs of the entire three months of the season). But the judges were right; it wasn't a collection in the truest sense of the word.

The second place finisher I just didn't like much at all though I could see the judges' points about the clothes. Just not my cup of tea.

When I got in from my errands, I fixed lunch and watched THE MENTALIST. It was a much darker episode (as had been foretold in reviews and previews), and like DR Ron Pulliam, I didn't guess the murderer until it was given away (fairly early in the show actually). But knowing that did ratchet up the suspense quite nicely and made one of the more memorable episodes of the season.

Then I watched GOMORRAH on Blu-ray. An excellent transfer, and seeing this complex film again so soon helped make the five running plots much clearer and easier to keep straight in my head.

All of the bonus features were in either 1080i or 1080p, something Criterion has been doing very consistently of late.

Best friend John has hit some button on his receiver and now no longer has surround sound from his cable box, so I'll be heading over there at some point tonight to troubleshoot that for him. So, I won't have a complete evening of leisure viewing as I thought.

I'm still planning to take tomorrow off. Nothing review-wise has arrived in the mail today, so I only have three Criterions here, all due on December 1st.

Not only are they not complaining, it's the BEST transfer and restoration EVER.  Hate to tell them, it's not as good as The Wizard Of Oz and if they can explain to me how that one, from the same year, has perfect Technicolor hues, why this one is pushed to yellow in a much stronger way.  Maybe that's the way it was for this particular film back then, but then, using that argument, why isn't Wizard the same?  I'm going to start watching this beast today as my eyes were way too tired when I gave it a look-see earlier in the week.

I haven't seen the GONE WITH THE WIND Blu-ray, but I do know that by the time GWTW started filming, Technicolor had developed a film that didn't need the heavy arc lamps that were used with OZ. Supposedly that's why the color has always been less bright but richer and deeper.

I read this in one of the making of GWTW books around here.

How they keep thinking of these variations on Allison's psychic powers, I just don't know.

Also, did you notice the kids weren't around much at all this week. I think they must have been in fewer minutes of the show this week than ever before, and Ariel wasn't there at all.

It would be hard for color to be richer and deeper than in the Technicolor portions of the Wizard of Oz Blu-Ray transfer.  Also, I'm not really talking about richer and deeper color, I'm talking about too much yellow.  However, now that I'm more than halfway through, other than a few sections when the yellow is pumped so hard that people look like they have jaundice, the transfer is really very nice - sharp, textured, and for a good portion of it the color palette is fine.  There are certain scenes where it's perfect, and that includes the Selznick logo at the top.  My worry basically came from the opening scene, which is not that indicative of what follows.

It doesn't happen often, but it does happen. I think the movie I did the most drastic reverse on was NASHVILLE which I was not a fan of when I first reviewed it for the news syndicate where I was free-lancing. Years later, I watched it again (on cable, I believe), and I finally got it. Now I think it's really wonderful.

I know nothing about color timing, film stock, etc. I'm just relating what I read about the differences in the types of lighting that were used in the two productions and that the result was a less bright but more sensual feel to the color. Again, not my idea; just what I read.

The NY Pops Johnny Mercer concert was quite good with many wonderful moments. After a while, I started to feel there were too many charts aiming to give each singer a raise-the-crowd-to-their-feet-screaming moment that became aurally exhausting but each singer had wonderful moments: Ann Hampton Callaway sang the most beautiful rendition of "Skylark" I've ever heard, with a wonderful unnamed pianist, Kevin Kuhn on guitar, bass, drums, and sax solo. The most beautiful orchestral playing was the orchestra performing Johnny Mandel's arrangement of "Emily," and the other singers each had at least one fantastic moment:
James Lane on "Hooray for Hollywood" and :One for My Baby"
Michael Feinstein on "I Remember You" and a Revenge Medley of "I Want to be Around to Pick Up the Pieces and Gody Goody"
N'Kenge (pronounced "Nuhkengee," I believe} on "Autmn Leaves" and "Come rain or Come Shine"

There was also a group of kids, Camp Broadway Kids, who went on too long and amused the noisy parents around me. They closed the program, and I think they should have performed early and cleared out for the adults.

After a while, though, I kept thinking, Give me a band of 30 at the maximum so it doesn't all sound so soupy.

This was the first Pops concert I'd been to since a Christmas one conducted by that scumbag Skitch Henderson around 1996, which was under-rehearsed, sloppy, and poorly prepared. This was slick and very well prepared and performed. I had a good time

It doesn't look like we got La Manse, but we won't know for sure until tomorrow.   So I am looking elsewhere.  :)

In better news (at least I'm taking it as better, LOL), I received a screener today for what I'm sure is a charming motion picture entitled JESUS CHRIST, VAMPIRE HUNTER.  :)

Finished with Gone With The Wind, which I've retitled Gone With My Evening.  I enjoyed it more than I have in the past, but boy is it long.

That's what I thought, but the news story referred to an email that was sent to Danise, so I thought it was worth a try
