Goodnight DR George.  I hope you've shifted all those boxes.

Well, actually...no. ::) I got distracted by TV.  What else is new?  I watched last night's episodes of "Ghost Whisperer" and the last two episodes of "Raines."  All three were very good.

I also watched last night's "20/20" about transgendered children!  Barbara Walters interviewed a 16 year old female-to-male, and six and ten year old male-to-female transgendered children.  Talk about heart-wrenching.  It was very well done.  And the parents of the children are SO supportive.  They get what's happening with their children and love them unconditionally.

And then I also watched this morning's "The View" with Alec Baldwin.  Oh my goodness...what he's been through with his divorce, I wouldn't wish on anyone.  He's writing a book on parental alienation.  It's not a book specifically about what's been happening  to him, but this kind of situation in general.

Such stunning photographs from DR MBARNUM.

Ms Beverly Washburn is prettier as a grown up lady than she was as a child or teen ager that's for sure.

Wow - Holly from LAND OF THE LOST!!

Ms Laurie Mitchell looks beautiful and that's a great display!  And thanks for the Baird update!  I know that Annette has said that Sharon is her BEST friend from the Mouse days.

Juliet and Rad were so sweet in NO, MY DARLING DAUGHTER!  I think everyone should see it!  Not sure if DR CP got to his copy so that he could see the on location London filming....but it's a lot of fun!

My feet hurt.

Yesterday, I spent my workday wrangling carts again.

It wasn't as bad as Tuesday, when I wrangled in the blazing sun and hadn't done the job for quite some time, so I ended up with very sore legs, a sore back, and sunburn.

This time, my muscles were ready.  But it was raining.  The whole day was spent outside, in what ranged from misty through light to moderate to pouring rain.

And the rain didn't make the pavement of the parking lot any softer.  So my feet hurt.

A few other notes about rain and parking lots:

Normally, customers are fairly good about getting their carts into the corrals provided, so whoever is wrangling has someplace specific to wrangle from.  This isn't true in foul weather.  The customers want to get out of the wet, and are more likely to leave the carts wherever they can.  I spent a lot of time seeking out carts that had been left sitting between cars in the lot.

Also, there was something about the rain that brought out driver rudeness.  I witnessed more drivers honking at other cars that weren't getting out of their way, more drivers stopping their cars right in front of the three ramps in front of the store that are supposed to be used for getting the carts out of and into the store (and are supposed to be kept clear, by law, for handicapped access), and more drivers deciding that they really wanted to be at the Daytona Speedway.

Fortunately, I won't be wrangling today.  I'll be inside, cashiering.

But I'm scheduled for wrangling next Tuesday and Wednesday.

I just hope we'll be having good weather on those days.

 :P

Good morning! I was just awakened for the second time by telemarketers. The first one had such a thick accent that it took my asking her 3 times to understand that I had "won" a free camera phone.

I think it's most unseemly of them to be calling at 8:30 on the only morning I have to catch up on sleep from my sleep-deprived week.
Title: Re:THE SHTUPPING BIRDS
Post by: singdaw on April 28, 2007, 06:19:11 AM
Unseemly?  It's downright presumptuous!

Both you AND bk had your dreams prematurely interrupted by the telephonic device in the same 24 hours.  Me, I have the ringer turned off in the budoir, so people can call all they like; I just don't hear it.

I was trying to get through yesterday's notes but kept falling asleep (no reflection on the quality of postings, just a long week of editing by day and activities every night.

So I didn't get to DR Danise's post until this morning.

I echo the sentiments of everyone else, Danise. I have not been through this with my parents but my father is in poor health so I know it will be something I will be dealing with in the near future. You are going through this with grace and compassion and my heart goes out to you.

And absolutely I agree that you made the best decision possible. You will have a support group of people who know exactly what to do because they have had so much experience, and they will know what you need, too.

Sometime the kindest thing you can do for someone is to tell that little white lie. Don't feel bad---you are doing it out of love!

Mega hugs and vibes to you, Danise. Try to get some rest and let us know how you're doing, when you can.

After work yesterday I went to the wedding rehearsal and Greg and I did a test run to measure the cable runs for the various speakers and microphones.

This wedding is being held at a beautiful and pretty expensive historic hall here in Marietta. It looks like it will be very nice, with a full dinner. But it seems like a lot of effort and expense for only 35 guests!

After the rehearsal, we went to the downtown square, w here they have concerts on Friday nights. I was hunting for my mother, who was going to be there. I never found her---it was cold out so she may have left early, but we did find a lot of our good preservation/activist friends.

One of them said "There's someone you HAVE to meet" and introduced me to his friend, who was a lawyer. The lawyer who represented the mother of the chinchy bassa developer who was suing her own son for stealing an inheritance that was rightly hers.

It was weird to talk to someone so intimately familiar with details of events we were immersed in for years. He is probably the only one beside the immediate family who knows all this stuff. He even knew how this developer had stolen property from my brother and father, an event which caused a major rift between them that has never healed and left much bitterness.

Everyone we saw said they were thinking of us when it was announced that the evil developer's project was going into foreclosure. Too bad they didn't know he was a bad risk BEFORE they destroyed our National Register Historic District, and our once beatiful view of the mountain. (Now we have a brick wall 10 feet from our hedge.)

Anyway, it's nice to see a bit of karma in action.

Oh, and as far as the case with the mother, they ruled in her favor but gave him most of the money because she was 93 and they didn't want the kids fighting over her inheritance again. What kind of judge is that?

Quote
The woman who needs a veil of protection from modern life
By VICTORIA MOORE

No, she's NOT a beekeeper. This woman believes that her bizarre headgear can save her from the dangerous electrosmog all around us. Can she possibly be right?
Before knocking on Sarah Dacre's door, I take the precaution of checking my mobile phone. It's switched off, as she has requested.

"Last time someone came to visit," she warns, "I started feeling awfully nauseous. It turned out he had a picture phone with him and had left it switched on. A picture phone!"

She pauses, looking genuinely horrified. Apparently, this type of mobile automatically sends signals to a local base station every nine minutes - "No wonder I felt so sick."

We sit down in the living-room of the airy, north London house that, for the past two years, has been Sarah's refuge from modern life. Save for the absence of a television, it looks ordinary enough.

But beneath the coats of magnolia paint, she points out, the walls are lined with a special paper that contains a layer of tin-foil; and upstairs, the windows are hung with a fine, silvery gauze.

These aren't idiosyncratic decorating decisions, though. All these silvery layers are here for a purpose: to keep the 21st century at bay.

Sarah, 51, is one of a growing band of people who claim to be experiencing extreme - and incapacitating - sensitivity to electrical appliances, as well as to certain frequencies of electromagnetic waves.

"Wi-Fi, or wireless broadband networks, seem to be the worst thing," she says.

"Closely followed by mobile phones - particularly if they're being used in an enclosed space - the base stations of cordless telephones and mobile phone masts.

Tribe Holds Camel Beauty Pageant
By Andrew Hammond
Reuters

GUWEI'IYYA, Saudi Arabia (April 26) - The legs are long, the eyes are big, the bodies curvaceous.

Contestants in this Saudi-style beauty pageant have all the features you might expect anywhere else in the world, but with one crucial difference -- the competitors are camels.

This week, the Qahtani tribe of western Saudi Arabia has been welcoming entrants to its Mazayen al-Ibl competition, a parade of the "most beautiful camels" in the desolate desert region of Guwei'iyya, 75 miles west of Riyadh.
...
"In Lebanon they have Miss Lebanon," jokes Walid, moderator of the competition's Web site. "Here we have Miss Camel."
...
Not to be confused with  Miss Camel Toe

On the subject of CABARET, I really love the new revisal with one exception: Cliff's singing role has been seriously diminished, and I don't understand the rationale behind that at all. Unlike the film where all the songs not done in performance or a public domain (the outdoor scene)were eliminated, the CABARET revisal still retains book numbers for the other characters. Cliff's wonderful songs should also be retained.

Quote
04/11/06
Beatles Catalog To Be Remastered, Offered Online
The Beatles' entire back catalog will soon be available for download - but only when each track has been digitally remastered to perfection. Up until now, the Fab Four are one of the few acts to have resisted making their work available at the iTunes Music Store. They were similarly the last stars to release their catalog onto compact disc.

But the boss of their record label Apple Corps, Neil Aspinall, revealed the development in London's High Court, where the company is currently battling Apple Computer over its logo.

He said, "We're remastering the whole Beatles catalog, just to make it sound brighter and better and getting proper booklets to go with each of the packages. I think it would be wrong to offer downloads of the old masters when I am making new masters. It would be better to wait and try to do them both simultaneously so that you then get the publicity of the new masters and the downloading, rather than just doing it ad hoc."

I didn't mind Cliff's songs being cut in the Sam Mendes/Rob Marshall revisal.  I think it helped to set apart Cliff as more of an observer - which is what I think Mssrs. Mendes and Marshall had in mind.

DR MBarnum was indeed devastating -- those eyes, that smile, those charming dimples...and that DR MusicGuy (our host that Tuesday night for the HHW West Coast Bash -- thank you!! -- it was delightful) who is most debonair, and delectable eye candy (you're right, DR Edi) -- actually as I looked about, that entire HHW table was full of eye candy -- DRBarnum, DS Boo-Key, the wildy entertaining blonde bombshell Grand Pooh-Pah and the petite and pretty Miss Patti.  I have no doubt Bratty Spooghetti (as in oops I forgot, or oops I was abducted by aliens, or oops I...whatever ..) would have only added more to that confectionery evening.  (I hope the aliens have returned him after all the probing....).  Then I had the boys all to myself the next morning over pancakes (ooh-la-laah  ;)) which was hosted and presided over by our fearless leader -- thanks, BK!  I think the minutes should so note that the HHW West Coast Bash was a sparkling success and that "a good time was had by all ...except DR Spooghetti...")... Make that "great time" ...

Saturday greetings!  I'm at work today, having taught the April edition of Grantseeking Basics this morning.  One of the attendees is someone who has just taken a job in northern Kentucky (greater Cincinnati), doing what I do here in Dayton and what my business specialist co-worker does.  Fortunately, that's a much smaller library and community.  She and I went to Panera for lunch and had a short "consult" afterward.

This afternoon my tree guy is coming to give an estimate on removing some dead/rotting trees.  I'm a little concerned about how much it's going to cost, but it has to be done. The tree guy is a looker.  Paul said he used to have the nicest ass in town....my reaction was "used to?"

Two words: Digital Camera.

;)

Then 'we' can pass judgment on, if indeed, he "used to".

I didn't mind Cliff's songs being cut in the Sam Mendes/Rob Marshall revisal.  I think it helped to set apart Cliff as more of an observer - which is what I think Mssrs. Mendes and Marshall had in mind.

Well, yes, he is an observer and a narrator, but he interacts with all of them too, and "Why Should I wake Up" is too beautiful a song to lose.

Speaking of THE FULL MONTY, and I was; our small-town newspaper posted their review of the local production of the show with a very unexpected photo (at least, for them).

I am no prude, and I loved the picture, but I certainly could see this kind of picture causing hundreds of complaints if it were published in a paper around here.

I spent this afternoon (in between phone calls and other household chores) watching the new Ultimate Edition of LIVE AND LET DIE.

Of the Roger Moore Bonds, it's one of the better ones, and now it looks and sounds great. The picture, as with all of the new editions, has been scrubbed of all dirt, hair, and damage. The DTS sound is not omni-present in the surrounds, but when it kicks in, it has real power and makes the film seem almost new. Glad to have this in the new version.

TOnight I'll watch SUPERNATURAL and then maybe another Bond - GOLDENEYE. It has gotten quite a bit of criticism because of bad framing, so I'm anxious to see what they've done to it. I think the old edition looks and sounds smashing, so this one is going to be interesting to compare to the original issue.

I wish LOVEMUSIK had tried out somewhere before going right to Broadway.  Ultimately it is closer in technique to BOY FROM OZ than JERSEY BOYS in its telling of its story and shoehorning of songs into the life story, but shoehorn them in it sure does, at times to jarring effect.  But if it is factual, what an education LOVEMUSIK is into important lives in the musical theater, and a relatively painless- mostly fast-moving - education at that.  And Michael Cerveris and Donna Murphy give performances that totally make you forget the actors and purely become their respective visions of the characters.

Miss Karen, when does Cason open in CABARET?  Can we expect another HHW gathering for opening night?

Well, I'll field this question, if you don't mind Mammy!

The show will run for three weekends - it'll show on Friday and Saturday nights (and if we can fill the houses, we'll do Sunday matinees) for the last weekend in June and the first two weeks in July.

June 29
June 30
(July 1?)

July 6
July 7
(July 8?)

July 13
July 14
(July 15?)

We had our first read-through last night and promptly started blocking "Willkommen" and I have to say, I've never been more excited to do a show after just the first rehearsal.  The cast is going to be really good and strong and the dancing is a blast already.

The show itself is going to take some moments from both the original and the revival.  They are still organizing ideas and deciding which songs will be included and which will be cut.  It'll be a work in progress here for a little while, but we'll have our first go next week -- they want us to perform the opening number for a fundraiser the theater is holding on Friday.  So, we'll have a pick-up on Tuesday, finish blocking, and then we'll give it what we've got for our first "audience."

I'll of course keep you all posted - with, yes, lots of pictures - and hopefully another HHW gathering could be organized!  :D

As for the Topic of the Day, I don't give two and a half figs for Sonic, but I LOVE the commercials with those two guys in the car.

And one time, my cousin and I were watching TV somewhere in Kansas, and both our jaws dropped when we saw a commercial advertising that McDonald's was selling Fruit-Rollups. We're both vegetarian, so we weren't about to go to McDonald's, but we were speechless, which is saying a lot if you know me and my cousin.

Hi all.  It has been another very long day.  They transfered Mom to the Hospice house this afternoon.

It is a very nice place and we are both quite comfortable.  I will be staying the night and will just go home tomorrow to check on and feed the dogs.

I was amazed when they said I could bring one of the dogs for a short visit.   I might try to bring Bear on Monday but we'll have to see about that.

Mom is resting and I am glad that I made the decision to bring her here.  They are doing a good job of taking care of me as well.  When they heard I hadn't really eaten in two days, they brought me a meal which was wonderful.

I think I shall be laying down myself.  I am very tired.

I want to thank all of your for emails, phone calls and just being there for me.  I looked at some of the emails while I was home so I can't really answer them because they are not on the server for me to retrieve on this computer.

I am so very glad I have this computer as well.  It's been a Godsend in more then one way.

Last night I was treated to "Legally Blonde" a friend of mine won 6 tickets in a basketball pool and we made it a girls' night out... all the other "girls" are in their late 20's and early thirties and all are fans of the movies.

This 49  year old had never seen the movies, but I dutifully (as instructed) donned a pink sweater set.  I offered to drive 3 of the girls in in (the other 2 were meeting us at the theater after a day in hte Big Apple)

I was prepared not to like it, and I found the opening song a bit grating... (well it was funny for the first minute or so but then became a bit tedious....)

But I found myself drawn in more and more... and by the courtroom scene I was laughing so hard the tears were rolling down my face

This really was a fun show (though I don't know that I would  buy the OCR - due out in June)

Somewhere around the 3rd round, the hostess began setting up the tables to accomodate a large party next to our booth... it was Laura Bell Bundy and her extended family all the way from Ol' Kentuck....

A fun night.

Afterwards we went to the Pig & Whistle where I , designated driver, drank  my Shirley Temples while the girls worked their way through the Martini menu... CHOCOLATE Martinis?

I think one other thing I am very happy about is that at least with the meds and the oxygen, she is her "nice" self.

Yesterday morning was just horrible.  She was pulling everything off of her and she said some really nasty things to the nurse and of course to me.  She hated me and kept telling me to leave her alone.  I had to go home to pick up some paperwork anyway  and by the time I came back, they said she was looking for me and was scared I wasn't coming back.  She's been fine ever since.

How I hate it when she gets to the state.  They expained that is normal but it is sure hart to take.  I pray she is not that way when the time comes.  I want my loving mother not the shrew for my last memory of her.

The meds and pain can sometimes cause that...I am glad she is back to herself... and remember always the "real" mom that you have had all these years

I like Legally Blonde as well.  I first saw it when I stayed at the Muse in NY.  I just bought the double DVD with both movies on it.

VixMom, I know that the Vixters Birthday is tomorrow.  I am so sorry I didn't get the chance to mail her a card this year.  Please tell her that I do wish her a very Happy day.

Oh Gosh! With all you have to deal with you are worried about the Vixter's birthday?!  You are a Saint.

I think the tree guy has been boss too long and Paul was probably right, lol.  He will be much richer after cutting down 8 full grown trees on my yard. YIKES!!! They are all either totally dead or rotten on the bottom and in danger of falling on either my house or a neighbor's house. SO, I'm biting the bullet.  His crew will take them all out in about 2 weeks.

Not so good.   When she's been in shrew mode (before yesterday) I've said some bad things to her.  I feel very bad about it now but at the time I was soooo mad.  I wish I could take it back.  I really didn't mean it.

I am thinking about planting 2 apple trees near the gazebo.  They would have nice blossoms in the spring and tasty apples in the fall.  (you have to plant 2 so they can bear fruit)

We have two trees on our front lawn that really should be removed...one is dead and falling apart... we had a lot of the biggest branches lopped off a year ago and then the tree guy vanished before finishing the job (we hadnt paid him yet so no worries)

So it's not in any immediate danger of killing anyone.

The other is valinetly trying to stay alive, throwing out new shoots but it is  on it's last legs (roots?)  I hate to take them down , and not just because of the $600 we've been quoted, the birds love them and the hollow trunks are full of nests

Yikes, I don't how much that costs where your at but here that's at LEAST a hundred dollars per tree!

It's more than that, the trees are much taller than my two story house, there are wires in the way and they can't get their trucks close to 3 of them.  So that means climbing and cutting without hitting my house or the neighbors.  But it has to be done and it's better than a tree crashing into someone's bedroom in the middle of the night and having who knows what happen.   One of the trees is so rotten I poked it with a stick and it went over half way through the trunk. They will also grind out the stumps and take away all the wood.

I've known I had to do both the trees and the chimney this year. I wasn't going to do all the trees at once, but I have the money now and they all need to go, so I'm doing it.  I was planning on doing some window work, but that may have to wait. I could sand, paint and seal the bad ones myself.

Luckily there are still lots of trees around here for the wildlife to enjoy. The birds love my huge pine in the front yard. It gives them a lot of protection.

I think you mighr be mistaken about the public domain song if you mean the scene at the beer garden where the blond boy and the patron sing Tomorrow Belongs Tom Me. That song is a Kander/Ebb.

If this isn't the scene you mean which one is it?

I didn't think you had to with apples, but my mother said you did and then she checked with a nursery and they agreed.  I know cherry will give fruit with just one tree.  I'm going to ask about it to be sure. There are some apple trees out there that grow fast and produce fruit within the first year or two. I'm thinking about planting whatever kind they are.  Just decided this today so I haven't done my research yet.

Ginny-How fun to remember the first day you wore nylons.  Was that also the first day you wore heels?  I remember the experience, just not the date-or even how old I was.

I remember being all dressed up with my parents & wearing my little french heels.  For some reason we decided to go to the movies.  I thought I was sooooo mature looking they wouldn't let me in as a child.  My parent’s response was to laugh at me, and darn, sure enough I still got in at the child's rate.  I was 17 before I couldn't do that anymore, and then only because Keith found it too embarrassing ;D

If it is coffee ice cream than I agree.  Years ago they had coffee ice cream with heath bar pieces, absolutely wonderful.  While their chocolate is excellent, IMHO, it isn't as good as Baskin-Robbins.  Alas, the only chocolate chip that comes close to BR's is in Italy.

Definitely MEDIUM and HEROES had that. If GHOST WHISPERER had it, I didn't see it.

I think you mighr be mistaken about the public domain song if you mean the scene at the beer garden where the blond boy and the patron sing Tomorrow Belongs Tom Me. That song is a Kander/Ebb.

If this isn't the scene you mean which one is it?

Dear Michael, not public domain as in "not covered by copyright." Public domain as in out in a public place and performing.

Sheesh!

Next, I put in GOLDENEYE. I watched it with the DTS 5.1 sound rather than the Dolby Digital 5.1 track which was on the original DVD.

If the DVD is misframed (some people have said the image has been zoomed in a little from the original issue), I couldn't see any difference in the couple of scenes I compared. And even if it is zoomed, the quality of the transfer is leagues better than the old one. The old one looks very dated now, and I was surprised how mediocre it looked when compared to the new one.

I concluded my evening of viewing with the James Cagney/Bette Davis romantic comedy THE BRIDE CAME C.O.D. They're a fun twosome together even with the mediocre script they're performing. And lots of great character actors in this one: Jack Carson, Harry Davenport, Stu Erwin, William Frawley, Chick Chandler, Eugene Pallette, Edward Brophy. They can make even middle-of-the-road material entertaining.

JOURNEY'S END was an amazing production, and the cast and direction were excellent.  It's a powerful piece, still quite relevant when it comes to old jerks sacrificing young men for ridiculous causes.  The whole assinine class structure of Edwardian England and its snobbism come through loud and clear as well. I don't recall seeing Stark Sands in anything except DIE MOMMY DIE, in which I was underwhelmed, and I thought he was absolutely wonderful here. I think production is hopng to limp along till the Tonys and I hope it succeeds in staying around.

I take a nice warm tub
I have a deep back rub
And the Rialto changes movies every Friday

I eat some hot minced pie
I see a cloud sail by
And the Rialto changes movies every Friday

You only get so much to work with
Before the seltzer's lost its fizz
And so, it's wise... To realize
This is all there is.

I sniff a rose bouquet
I hear some Mozart play
And it's a comfort
And it's a blessing
You only have to call it so
And the Rialto changes movies every Friday
What a wonderful thing to know

Oh, oh, oh... Six o'clock and the master is not home yet.  Pray God nothing serious has happened to him crossing the river.  But I wouldn't be surprised. The whole world's at sixes and sevens.

So open the box and hand me a car'mel treat
Go to the movies and reserve me a center seat
At the Rialto
At the Rialto
Friday

This is where you came in. We have to go on for ages and ages yet... You go home...  Oh, Mr. and Mrs. Antrobus...  Their heads are full of plans and they're as confident as the first day they began...  And they told me to tell you...

Goodnight.

Good Evening!

Another show, another closin'.

-There was a very nice champagne toast after the show, and then was back on the vans back to get back to NYC.   However, since some people were staying up there for the night, and other people were taking the "midtown van" there were only two of us in the "uptown van".  So, James dropped each of us at our doors.  -A nice "extra" closing night gift.

Otherwise, we had two good shows today.  Two good audiences.  And I know I'll be seeing everyone sooner or later.  So... To quote another Kander & Ebb song... "And the world goes round and round and round..."

Well, Brody hasn't been to school lately, so, really, not much has happened. Apart from that Oops! Report yesterday, anyway. Brandon and his I-don't-want-to-eat-my-vegetables-so-I'll-just-cry routine has been keeping me from eating my plate for quite some time, so we don't even have that.

But we have a couple of birthdays coming up, and Kayla says she'll be getting a purple flying pony any day now, so I'm sure something exciting will happen pretty soon.

Speaking of Samantha Sang (First recorded as Cheryl Grey here) - A very powerful voice.  It's a pity she will be best remembered now as a Bee Gees "production".
Sam was in "The Magic Show" here.

Hmmm....

So, "originally" I had planned to spend tomorrow cleaning my room, sorting through the rest of the back log of my mail, etc.  But since it's supposed to a glorious day weather-wise, and since I haven't been to Central Park in a while...

Plus, Dawn Upshaw is giving a free recital tomorrow at Town Hall as part of their "Free For All At Town Hall" series... Ticket distribution begins at Noon, which means I would have to line up no later than 9:00, I guess...

And there are still tickets left for Maurizio Pollini's recital at Carnegie Hall...

And the L.A. Philharmonic at Avery Fisher Hall with Jean-Yves Thibaudet playing Ravel's Piano Concerto for the Left Hand...

Decisions, decisions...
