Well, you've read the notes, the notes were bookish, and now it is time for you to post until the cows come home - they don't have a muse, the have a moos.
-
And the word of the day is: INFUNDIBULIFORM!
Smoke on your pipe and put that in.
-
A Very Happy Birthday to (former..only for posts in 2005) DR bdapp, BK's very close and personal friend!!
-
Yes, a happy haineshisway.com birthday to Miss Barbara Deutsch.
-
Congrats to DR TCB on his $$ win at the casino, yesterday!
-
And Happy 14000th Post Page One Dance for DR DakotaCelt! ;D

-
And now...to bed. Good night, all.
-
DR JoseSPiano - Congratulations on your out-of-town gig!!! :D
I think it is interesting that we have two DRs musically helming productions of The Producers at the same time!
-
bk, really enjoying your continuing notes about the creative process. :)
-
Congratulation$ also to DR TCB!!!! :D

TOD
What a good question.
Would we go back and warn the Presidents who died in office not to do what they did that preceded their deaths?
ie
Telling McKinley not to go to the World's fair
Telling Lincoln not to go see My American Cousin and see the out of town engagement of Cats instead?
(Kidding about Cats)
Bring Harrison some medicine to clear up his cold?
Telling Garfield to give Guiteau the position of the United States consul in Paris even though he wasn't qualified to do it.
Helping Harding to survive his heart attack
and of course saving Kennedy that day in Dallas.
But I think I want to meet John Adams to see if he really spoke in his Bostonian accent as he has been depicted in plays and musicals. I suspect that he might have had more of a British/Welch accent.
Also
Franklin Roosevelt who seemed to be a fascinating man in private life as in public
-
I wanted to fix some of the photos I posted yesterday and didn't realize by deleted them and replacing them that they would no longer show up.
So for those who saw empty spaces yesterday
Here they are again with my apologies

What a swell vacation, Michael S! Much more fun than ours (no offense to JRand).
-
Good morning. I'm back at the office. 18 days until I get to Wisconsin.
-
I won't take us to Page 2 singlehandedly. I have too much work to do today
-
Good morning, all! This is my day of hell before tomorrow's colonoscopy. Nothing but clear liquids today and the rest of the horror beginning at 1 pm.
This morning, I'm walking down to City Center to drop off a package, and after that I shall return home to work on THE MOST HAPPY FELLA and begin the prep for tomorrow morning.
I had a lot of weird dreams last night, one involving music for "The Lady Is A Tramp," but God knows why.
-
Monday morning greetings! Soon I must get to the grocery for the ingredients for chili. Tonight is the big soup-supper-and-book-sorting AAUW partay and I'm contributing one of the soups. Before retirement, I was never able to get to this annual event until everyone had already eaten and they were a working away. This year I'm looking forward to being able to attend from the beginning.
-
but God knows why.
Think about the lyric.
It will become clear presently.
;)
-
I won't take us to Page 2 singlehandedly.
You're right. It is much easier to use both hands.
-
DR Elmore - vibes for you as you embark on one of my least favorite adventures :-*
-
Thanks for sharing those great photos, DR Michael S.!!!!! :)
-
***COMFORT AND PROCEDURE VIBES***
for DR elmore3003!!!!!!
My first time - which I had done earlier in years than they normally recommend due to family history - they found benign polyps and scheduled another within 3 years. My second time I got a clean bill of health and can wait 5 years for the next one.
-
Larry - Don't forget to give Skip any particulars about picking you up afterwards tomorrow.
-
DR FJL - please thank Skip for me for looking after our dear DR Elmore!
-
good morning everyone, great pictures.
George, thank you again.
off to the start of another work week.
-
DR Jose - great news about the gig in Charleston. One of my favorite mystery series is set there - the tea shop mysteries by Laura Childs. Maybe I'll read some while you're there!
-
I won't take us to Page 2 singlehandedly.
You're right. It is much easier to use both hands.
Ha, ha, you funny lady ;)
-
If we don't get a photo of DR JoseSPiano doing the charleston in Charleston, there'll be a lot of disappointed DRs! :)
-
Ha, ha, you funny lady ;)
Shhhh!!! Don't tell Babs! ;)

Verizon's new ad campaign:

Perhaps DR elmore3003 will encounter these lovelies tomorrow...

Just remember: They deliver!!

And the word of the day is: INFUNDIBULIFORM!
Smoke on your pipe and put that in.
And The Song Of The Day Is: THERE'S A FLAW IN MY FLUE
(And I'm Smokng Away)
-
...I had a lot of weird dreams last night, one involving music for "The Lady Is A Tramp," but God knows why.
Perhaps you were pre-channeling our esteemed BK, and seeking out a muse of your own!
-
TOD:
Obviously, if I were to dine with any past President, it would have to be Thomas Jefferson, the first true gourmet.
(That, and I have a thing for tall men.)
-
Good morning!
Another gorgeous day in the Carolinas. Can't believe this early summer weather we're having (though bvy the end of the week, we get back to normal). I'm going to enjoy it while it lasts!
-
On TV Tonight!™
ABC - DANCING WITH THE STARS, CASTLE (series premiere)
CBS - comedies, CSI: MIAMI
NBC - CHUCK, HEROES, MEDIUM
FOX - HOUSE, '24'
TNT - SAVING GRACE
-
TOD:
I think it would have to be John F. Kennedy. He was so erudite that I think a conversation with him would have been fascinating.
-
Good Morning!
I'm up, I'm up... And I let myself sleep in this morning. And I'm also allowing myself a few hours of "lazy time" this morning before I start getting things in order for my trip down to Charleston.
-
Today my work project will be the Blu-ray edition of Criterion's THE 400 BLOWS. I love Truffaut's first film, but I haven't seen it in years, so I'm really looking forward to seeing it in high definition.
There are two commentaries and a bunch of bonus features, too, so I'll be on this for most of the day.
-
Thanks for sharing the pictures of your vacation, DR Michael. Looks like you had a super time!
-
TOD - John Adams, but only if he'd bring his wife Abigail, one of my personal heroines.
-
DR DAW - Just what are those "lovelies" delivering?
-
DR FJL - As for last night's recording session... I think it was originally scheduled to go from 6:00-9:00. I sort of knew it was going to go "long". It was more a matter of the timing of it - and my energy and concentration levels with SETCs and "Springing Forward" in the mix.
-
Just what are those "lovelies" delivering?
You really don't want to know! :)
-
DR elmore - Just remember, if you start to feel a bit irritable later today, you can always call DR MBarnum. ;D
-
I just read on the "[title of show] blog" that the reason Philip Seymour Hoffman was wearing a ski cap on the red carpet at the Oscars was to hide his dreadlocks for an upcoming film project. He apparently thought it better to be taunted for his hat than for his hair. :-\
-
Off to Kroger...bye for now!
-
I just read on the "[title of show] blog" that the reason Philip Seymour Hoffman was wearing a ski cap on the red carpet at the Oscars was to hide his dreadlocks for an upcoming film project. He apparently thought it better to be taunted for his hat than for his hair. :-\
He was also wearing that cap during all of his pre-Oscar week interviews. When he was on "The Today Show", he did say that his hair was currently "for a role".
-
his hair was currently "for a role".
My Hair For a Roll - or, I've Just Put My Hair In a Bun And Can't Do a Thing With It.
-
TOD - John Adams, but only if he'd bring his wife Abigail, one of my personal heroines.
So... You'd put up with him to get to meet her, right? ;)
-
TOD:
My pick would be FDR, hopefully joined with Eleanor. I've always found both of them fascinating people.
-
Heading down now to get cleaned up for my lunch date out with best friend John.
WBBL.
-
TOD: I would have dinner with Zachary Taylor so I could tell him not to eat the cherries and milk.
-
Yes, ladies and germs, it *is* snowing in Portland. As in good, old fashioned, real "Utah" snow snowing. Oy.
-
I'd drop in on W. just to see if there really were puppet strings attached to Cheney's hands. ;)
-
but God knows why.
Think about the lyric.
It will become clear presently.
;)
Are you telling me I was dreaming about you? Dream on, Alice!
-
Well, that task is done.
The spreadsheet I started on last Saturday, listing all the cookbooks/foodbooks in our library, is completed. At least for now.
418 entries.
Of course, there's probably a few stragglers laying around in the living room or the dining room, but those will be easy to add once I find them.
Now I guess I can loaf around for the rest of the day, unless I get called in to work.
-
his hair was currently "for a role".
My Hair For a Roll - or, I've Just Put My Hair In a Bun And I Can't Do a Thing With It.
No loafing about, DR DAW, like our DR S. Woody White!
-
Geez, I posted 15 minutes ago and the place died.
-
What next?
-
Will page 3 DANCE?
-
Will Nora ever stop being the center of attention on "Brothers and Sisters"?
-
Will Allison ever get the immediate respect of DA Davalos that she's earned over and over and over again yet still seemingly has to be proven right by someone else before he gives her credit?
-
No loafing about, DR DAW
Who, me? I was just croissant the street!
-
Will we ever see Sun again on "Lost"? Did she also return to the island or has she found herself lost in some desert somewhere?
-
DR JOSE here are instructions on doing the Charleston, I would suggest however that you listen more closely to the music than this young man does.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JLVyv-8Np8E&feature=related
-
Will page 3 DANCE?
We'd have to ask you.
-
Will Melinda finally get over Jim and let the "new" Sam find his own way with someone else on "Ghost Whisperer"?
-
Happy Birthday Barbara Deustch.
-
Lovely photos from DR MICHAEL S.
-
I read Benjamin Kritzer a couple of years before I ever came to HHW..... The cover and description on Amazon intrigued me, and of course I loved the book.
-
Geez, I posted 15 minutes ago and the place died.
Don't take it too personally. :)

I'm wondering if "The Charleston" isn't yet another thing that DR Jose already knows all about.
-
the "new" Sam
Who knew our newest DR had her own television show!
-
of course I loved the book.
I keep waiting for one of the designers on HGTV to do a "hanging salami" themed makeover, but they never do... :-\
-
Jrand, I never knew you'd found the first Kritzer book before coming to the site.
-
I'm up and have printed out a few orders.
-
I'm up and have answered a few e-mails.
-
I'm up and have not done the long jog - it's a little overcast outside.
-
of course I loved the book.
I keep waiting for one of the designers on HGTV to do a "hanging salami" themed makeover, but they never do... :-\
Perhaps the homeowner reaction to Hildy having glued hay to a living room wall many years back has tempered those designers' urges to wreak havoc on folks who want a better quality of living.
-
DR FJL - please thank Skip for me for looking after our dear DR Elmore!
From me too :)
DR elmore, Vibes all goes well tomorrow & you don't get too sick this afternoon!
-
Will Betty ever stop being Ugly and will her new friend, whose family has Billion$, offer a loan to Meade Publishing?
-
Will Jeremy Abbott be able to hold his own at the World Figure Skating Championships? And will Alissa Czisny be able to finish in the top 5?
-

DR Dakota have you watched DAUGHTER’S & WIFES and NORTH & SOUTH?

Jrand, I never knew you'd found the first Kritzer book before coming to the site.
LOL....my amazon.com review is dated December 21, 2002!

From Matt H:
I just read that the ratings for the season finale of BURN NOTICE on Thursday night broke its own record and will rank as the highest rated series on cable for the week.
This makes me happy, IMHO the rating is well deserved.
-
DR Michael S.-You obviously had fun at Discover Cove. :) Thank you for sharing your photos.
-
I like the new promos of RESCUE ME that have the Firemen as giants stalking through New York City.
-
If the sky doesn't clear, I may forego the long jog today. We shall see.
-
I am a bit sad that we lost who we lost on TAR last night, especially since next week seems to be a swim suit road block....but there you are.
-
MR BK what would Mitch Miller have done to "assist" the ILLYA DARLING recording?
-
DR MBARNUM - I put Lillian on my Facebook....I am stunned at that particular number....or maybe the word is tazed.
-
TOD:
Hmmmmmmmmmmmmm.......Benjamin Harrison, Indiana's Own!
-
He probably produced it and didn't want credit, since he was still probably a Columbia artist - my guess, anyway.
-
Ah - that makes sense.
For a 43 year old MONAURAL LP - it still sounds pretty good!
-
Yes, ladies and germs, it *is* snowing in Portland. As in good, old fashioned, real "Utah" snow snowing. Oy.
It's snowing in Tumwater, also! Lots of big flakes!
I was planning on walking to work today, but obviously that's not gonna happen.
-
Will Betty ever stop being Ugly and will her new friend, whose family has Billion$, offer a loan to Meade Publishing?
And when will she get her braces off??

Anya was, of course, also released in glorious Stereophonic Sound.
-
DR Jrand - Thanks for the "Charleston" lesson.
-
I think those fancy steps will help you feel groovy and funky even away from the keyboard, DR JOSE.
-
Good Morning, All. We had a few unexpected showers last night, so this morning when I took Sugar for a walk, she had to start all over with all the new smells. How exciting!
-
DR Ron Pulliam - And, yes, I have made the acquaintance of the "Charleston" before.
*Actually, I have been in Charleston, SC, once before. For a competition. I was part of a "trio": singer, guitarist and keyboardist (me). And, IIRC, we actually won that round of the Contemporary Christian Music contest.
-
Lots of big flakes!
Enough about the locals! And how is the weather, DR George? ;D
-
:o

LOL DR JANE.....I hope some people get off the train at the next stop!

Lots of big flakes!
And how is the weather, DR George? ;D
Cold!

Off to work!

Hello all! Sorry to have been E & T all weekend. Saturday was a beautiful Spring-like day and Vixdad took me out for a ride in the car. When we finally got home he took over the computer for the rest of the day.
-
I see that they will begin issuing some of the early seasons of Lost on Blu-Ray, starting in June. Some of the later seasons have already been issued in that format.
-
On Sunday I got up, showered got dressed and went to church for the first time since Christmas day. It was wonderful seeing everyone again. I finally got to meet our new interim Pastor. He seems nice and his sermon was pretty good.
After church we came home. I had a bowl of chicken broth while the Vixter and Vixdad had McDonalds' drive through then we went to the Vixter's basketball game.
By the time we got back I was a littletired so I took a nap while Vixdad used the computer.
-
Sounds like you had a nice weekend, DR vixmom!! :)
-
Michael Shayne it looks like you had a great time at Discovery Cove. My niece and her husband were just there a couple of weeks ago on their belated honeymoon. They had a wonderful time there as well.
You are looking very slim and trim!!
-
Sounds like you had a nice weekend, DR vixmom!! :)
Yes very nice!
-
DR Druxy - congratulations on your play!
-
I think DR Vixmom's emerging from the house is what's brought us all this bee-yoo-ti-full weather to the East Coast!
-
Jose congrats on your MD gig! I look forward to hearing about your adventures in Charlotte. I am sorry that you had such a rude seat mate and about the loss of your coat.
~~~~~TRAVEL VIBES FOR JOSE!!!~~~~
-
Congratulations to TCB on your win! May the rest of your vacation be as rewarding!!
~~~~~~~~HOUSE VIBES FOR DEAR DANISE~~~~~~~~

Who here rememberes "The Waltons" and Grandma Walton played by Ellen Corby?
I recall that after Corby had a stroke and had recovered sufficiently to return to the show, "Saturday Night Live" did one of their parody TV announcement promos for "The Waltons" that went something like, "Next week, Grandma Walton Ties Her Shoelaces".
So bad. But funny.
:)
-
I am glad I got to go out this weekend because today is rainy and grey and cold.
-
I think DR Vixmom's emerging from the house is what's brought us all this bee-yoo-ti-full weather to the East Coast!
:D
I don't know who here is gayer than laughter, but surely DR vixmom is younger than springtime!! :)

I would love to have known Ronald Reagan.
Politics aside, he seemed to be a very nice man.

Which reminds me.... I loved your parody song FJL!!

I guess I am going to try and eat something
LATERS!

I wonder if Glitter [with Mariah Carey] is one of those films that is so bad, it's good??

I Know! I know!
DR Ron Pulliam gets a sparkly gold star!! :-*

I wonder if Glitter [with Mariah Carey] is one of those films that is so bad, it's good??
Some films are just bad.
-
...depending of course on what you want to look at.
Well, yes. There is always that.
-
Ron,
I vaguely remember seeing that skit. Yes funny but tacky.
ON the flip side, I do give Ellen Corby kudos for continuing to do the show. Sadly you do not that see that sort of support much anymore of an actor or actress who wants to work after a catastrophic illness.
-
I wonder if Glitter [with Mariah Carey] is one of those films that is so bad, it's good??
Some films are just bad.
I can think of a few others that are just BAD also...
One that comes to mind is Caveman with Ringo Starr and Shelly Long
-
Glad to see Vixmom was out and about over the weekend enjoying the nice weather...
Continued vibes!
-
I've packaged up a few orders, which I'll ship out later today, including several amazon orders that had been sitting here for a while. All caught up now, and ready for the huge addressing day on Wednesday.
-
I'm pretty sure I cried when Grandma Walton forced out "You old fool!" when Grandpa finally got her to speak on Colby's first episode back after the stroke. Ironically enough, it was Will Geer's last episode.
-
I wonder if Glitter [with Mariah Carey] is one of those films that is so bad, it's good??

"Caveman"? Bad? Are you JOKING?
I think it's hilarious!
Always remember that at first: "Atouk alounda Lana!"
But, ultimately: "Atouk alounda Tala!"
-
I wonder if Glitter [with Mariah Carey] is one of those films that is so bad, it's good??
If wonder if folks who watch "Glitter" find themselves being gay!
-
Touché, DR RLP! :)
-
DR Dakota have you watched DAUGHTER’S & WIFES and NORTH & SOUTH?
I have not seen DAughters and Wifes...
I have seen North and South and love it. I would love to get the DVDs of that series. I have also seen the miniseries that was based on John Jakes Kent Family Chronicles.
I tend to really enjoy well done miniseries of Historical dramas. I would love to see Tudor. I have heard a lot about it not only on this board but from othes who have seen it. In the case of The Far Pavilions, I read the book before the miniseries. Loved the book and I still do. I have re-read it several times. I read Centennial after I saw the miniseries. We had a student teacher was originally from INdia and she taught us about the country and I was curious. I also liked Hawaii.
I love the historical dramas and masterpiece interpretations of literature on Masterpiece Theatre. And yes, I did watch avidly the few months when they were doing the Jane Austen ones. One of my favorite authors.
Another book I saw adapted to telly that I really liked was Flame Trees of Thika. I remember seeing the program air on PBS and the read the book. I also liked Long Road to Coorain.
I have discovered books are a wonderful escape and a great way to travel to far off exotic lands.

I watched "Definitely, Maybe" yesterday afternoon.
Wonderful movie! Funny, touching, nicely acted.
-
I loved the anecdote in yesterday's NY Post story on the original production and subsequent movie of West Side Story, which I had heard previously but had forgotten:
They were in meetings to bring in Hal Prince as the producer. No one knew that Hal knew the score already, having been coached on it in prior weeks by Stephen Sondheim. So Leonard Bernstein was presenting his score, "for the first time," and Hal kept forgetting and humming/singing along. And Lenny said, "Wow! A musical producer!" :)
-

There were a few good moments in that movie... Have not seen it in years...
I do have a copy of a badly done Doctor who movie. The acting was not bad but the production are definitely low budget. In one scene you can see the gaffer.
-
Caveman is definitely a guy movie
-
Just going through all the Illya Darling tapes, which are very confusing. Of course, I have the album masters, which are being sent to the mastering guy today. But I also have all the four-track session masters with all the takes - but there seem to be duplicates of certain reels but not others - very confusing. Interestingly, there seem to be two selections that didn't make the LP - one is called Taverna Dance and one is called Po, Po, Po. Taverna Dance has a circled take so that one seems to have been fine - Po, Po, Po has no circled take. There is also a reel marked "outtakes" but which contains everything on the LP - so I have no idea what that is. My mastering guy can't do four-track, so I have a message in to someone here, and I'm hoping I can just bring this stuff to him and listen to a few things - if they're worth transferring, then I'll have him do the four tracks into Pro Tools and send those off to the mastering guy to mix together, or, if this guy can mix then we'll do it here. I'm very curious to know what the outtakes thing is. If the two tracks that didn't make the LP are usable, then I'd have to get MGM to agree to their being put on as bonus tracks.
-
The sun is peeking out, so maybe I'll do the long jog.
-
Wasn't Ringo Starr's wife in that movie

TOD:
A very intriguing question that can be played many different ways...
I would love to meet with Kennedy and offer him advice on diversity issues namely women and civil rights.
I also think it would be interesting to meet with FDR and Lincoln. There could be endless discussion on unification issues in face of great upheaval in the country.
-

I think DR Vixmom's emerging from the house is what's brought us all this bee-yoo-ti-full weather to the East Coast!
Worked here in SW Ohio, too - it's bright and sunny and the crocuses are trying to bloom.
Pace yourself, DR Vixmom!

There are 2 new celeb/cast members. Jewel and Nancy O'Dell are out due to injury.

Mrs. McGervey was walking down O'Connell Street in Dublin when she met up with Father O'Flaherty.
The Father said, 'Top o' the mornin' to ye! Aren't ye Mrs. McGervey and didn't I marry ye and yer hoosband 2 years ago?'
She replied, 'Aye, that ye did, Father.'
The Father asked, 'And be there any wee little ones yet?'
She replied, 'No, not yet, Father.'
The Father said, 'Well now, I'm going to Rome next week and I'll light a candle for ye and yer hoosband.'
She replied, 'Oh, thank ye, Father.' They then parted ways.
Some years later they met again. The Father asked, 'Well now, Mrs. McGervey, how are ye these days?'
She replied, 'Oh, very well, Father!' The Father asked, 'And tell me, have ye any wee ones yet?'
She replied, 'Oh yes, Father! Three sets of twins and 4 singles, 10 in all!'
The Father said, 'That's wonderful! How is yer lovin' hoosband doing?'
She replied, 'E's gone to Rome to blow out yer candle!”

He'll probably look at it and declare, "That's a printer all right."

Vixmom, they want us to sign a new contract we can't afford since this machine we bought a couple years ago is needing service now. So I decided we would get the service we've been paying for.
It runs, but the finishing unit we paid a lot for doesn't work -- and hasn't for about a year. I am going to make them fix it. We have paid for maintenance, and I shan't accept the "I don't know what's wrong with it" explanation any more.
Hopefully, they will decide this machine is costing them too much in repairs and they will rethink the contract they want us to sign and make it affordable for us.

YES! Melinda needs to understand that when you love someone as much as she loved Jim, she needs to let him go. Jim's ghost in Sam's body still has to contend with Sam's memory imprints in the brain...and all his skepticism and doubt.
Melinda cannot function properly when confronted with all his negativity.
Yes, Sam/Jim should go. When he finally realizes what he has lost, he can come back and make it right.

You stick to your guns Laura! If you have been paying for maintenance then it is ridiculous that they are giving you the run around - especially to a church!!!

OK the Vixter wants the computer so laters!!!

Found a guy who can do four-track transfers into Pro Tools files - I'm seeing him tomorrow at two-thirty. He'll play these two bits for me for free to see if they're usable, and then, if they are, I'll go ahead and do the transfers, which are very reasonable. Big machines have suddenly shown up outside my house - and they're now doing some totally unnecessary street things, I imagine. In fact, I'm going out there to find out just what the HELL they ARE doing. And then I'll toddle off to get a bite to eat and I shall proof whilst doing so.

I'm pretty sure I cried when Grandma Walton forced out "You old fool!" when Grandpa finally got her to speak on Colby's first episode back after the stroke. Ironically enough, it was Will Geer's last episode.
I remember that, definitely a touching & emotional moment if you watched the show.

I see that they will begin issuing some of the early seasons of Lost on Blu-Ray, starting in June. Some of the later seasons have already been issued in that format.
Yes, the last two seasons are now available on Blu-ray. The first two will be coming (I thought it was May but it was probably June). I assume I'll be reviewing them. I am THRILLED to get to revisit those first two brilliant seasons knowing what I know now about the island mythology and see how everything ties together.
-
DR Dakota have you watched DAUGHTER’S & WIFES and NORTH & SOUTH?
I have not seen DAughters and Wifes...
I have seen North and South and love it. I would love to get the DVDs of that series. I have also seen the miniseries that was based on John Jakes Kent Family Chronicles.
Another book I saw adapted to telly that I really liked was Flame Trees of Thika. I remember seeing the program air on PBS and the read the book. I also liked Long Road to Coorain.
I think you will enjoy Daughters and Wives.
I don't remember Flame Trees of Thika. I shall put it on our NetFlix queue.

I spent most of the afternoon watching the Blu-ray of THE 400 BLOWS. Apart from a couple of hairs, it's a perfect transfer. Not the deepest blacks but still the cleanest and sharpest I have ever seen the film look.
One has to laugh at the kind of "juvenile delinquent" that Antoine is. Nothing like gang members we live in fear of now. He seems like a choir boy in comparison.
-
I listened to the first 30 minutes of the first audio commentary (and flipped over to the second commentary a couple of times which is in French with subtitles). Very entertaining commentary track.
-
There are five additional bonus features on the disc (I'm sure ported over from the original Criterion release) which I'll go through tonight.

DR DtM, great view from your office. I love the Pennsylvania stone on the church.

Time to pack up this crockpot full of chili and try to get it to the booksale site without spilling it all over my car...bye for now!

I've got some writing to do, so I'll start on that now. Then I'll head back down for more bonuses with THE 400 BLOWS and then one or more shows on prime time TV tonight.

I did talk to my director down in Charleston, and it looks like I will be having a sort of light rehearsal schedule for the first few days. -Which is was OK by me. They will be opening a production of Picasso at the Lapin Agile Thursday night, and since Charleston Stage utilizes "company members", the rehearsal schedule is determined according to their pre-existing performance schedule. So, after my production meeting on Thursday morning, I will have a two-hour vocal rehearsal, and then the rest of day will be mine, mine, mine. They have asked me to attend the Opening Night Reception that night to meet and greet some of the theatre's supporters and donors, but it will be nice to have a couple hours that afternoon to get settled and to get some prep work done for the weekend rehearsals.

No real liner notes, just quotes from the raves for Melina......
Boy oh Boy are these songs not in show order.
But I am confused and maybe Bruce can explain
I Think She Needs Me is listed on the recording. Is this a different song than the Sondheim contribution? Is it actually on the recording because sometimes they printed the covers before the recording of the songs.
Here is the record order and the actually show order: (Numbers in bold are the show order)
Side One:
Bouzouki Nights - Orchestra and Chorus (2)
Piraeus, My Love - Illya (Melina Mercouri) and Men (4)
Golden Land - Homer (Orson Bean) and Ensemble (dialogue Yorga) (5)
Illya Darling - Yorga (Titos Vandis) and Ensemble (12)!
Medea Tango - Illya (Melina Mercouri) and Men dialogue - Homer (Orson Bean) and Capitagno (Rudy Bond) (11)
I'll Never Lay Down Anymore - Despo (8 )
Never On Sunday - Illya (Melina Mercouri) and Ensemble (15)!
Side 2
Overture (Entract) - Orchestra
Love, Love, Love Illya (Melina Mecouri) (6) Dropped later
I Think She Needs Me - Homer (Orson Bean) (7) Sondheim lyrics?
Dear Mr. Schubert - Illya (Melina Mercouri) (13)
Heaven Hellp the Sailors on a Night LIke This - Sailors and Ladies (16)
After Love - Tonio (Nikas Kourkoulos) (9) Dropped later
Yorgo's Dance (Zebekiko) - Orchestra (3)!
Ya CHara - Yorga, Despo, Tonio, Illya and Entire Company (17)
2, 4, 5, 12, 11, 8, 15, 6, 7, 13, 16, 9, 3, 17
I understand why Never On A Sunday was used for the end of side one, as it was a hit song and it made a good end to the side even though it is not in proper show order

That's a great story. If you want to hear an audio of it, just check out the corresponding "Sondheim: The Story So Far" podcast from Sony Classics/Masterworks.
-
Jose congrats on your MD gig! I look forward to hearing about your adventures in Charlotte. I am sorry that you had such a rude seat mate and about the loss of your coat.
~~~~~TRAVEL VIBES FOR JOSE!!!~~~~
Thank you, DR vixmom - I am looking forward to getting to spend some time down in Charleston, SC, and I'm also looking forward to really "working" again. -It's been a while. The company has been "courting" me over the past couple of years, and everything just seemed to line up this time.
I am a little hesitant about leaving NYC for the six weeks, but I'm sure the six weeks will go fast, and I'll be back in time for my usual round of Spring auditions. I'm also bringing some music and books with me. I'll have a good amount of free time while I'm down there, and I want to get some practicing (Classical music) and reading done. Of course, my apartment does have cable TV, so I'll have that "option" too.
Just going through all the Illya Darling tapes, which are very confusing. Of course, I have the album masters, which are being sent to the mastering guy today. But I also have all the four-track session masters with all the takes - but there seem to be duplicates of certain reels but not others - very confusing. Interestingly, there seem to be two selections that didn't make the LP - one is called Taverna Dance and one is called Po, Po, Po. Taverna Dance has a circled take so that one seems to have been fine - Po, Po, Po has no circled take. There is also a reel marked "outtakes" but which contains everything on the LP - so I have no idea what that is. My mastering guy can't do four-track, so I have a message in to someone here, and I'm hoping I can just bring this stuff to him and listen to a few things - if they're worth transferring, then I'll have him do the four tracks into Pro Tools and send those off to the mastering guy to mix together, or, if this guy can mix then we'll do it here. I'm very curious to know what the outtakes thing is. If the two tracks that didn't make the LP are usable, then I'd have to get MGM to agree to their being put on as bonus tracks.
The Taverna Dance was listed as Bouzouki Nights on the recording
Zebikiko was listed as Yorgo's Dance
And as for my "rude seat mate" yesterday, well... The whole situation was actually a little comical - at least to me. First there was the whole, "The overhead bins are for everyone" exchange, then there was her poster. She did not want to roll it up and put in the overhead bins - or underneath the seat in front of her - so she placed it in the seat pocket in front of her. She gently bent, curled it forward so that it would stay tucked into the pocket. About every two minutes, the poster would then choose to unroll itself and gently graze her face. Lather, Rinse, Repeat.
Oh, of course, part of the joke was on me too. After I had placed my bag in the overhead bin - next to her bags - I sat down in my seat, seat 9D. Or so I thought. Another young woman came on and said that she was in seat 10D, which turned out to be the seat I was sitting in. So, I moved to seat 9D, which, of course, was right next to the "bag lady". -And since she was a woman of a "certain size", and since we were flying on a puddle-jumper, it was a bit cozy. But, again, I knew I was in the right in regards to the overhead bins - and I could tell that she knew that too. And then each time that poster unrolled and "slapped" her in the face, well... :)
I wonder if Glitter [with Mariah Carey] is one of those films that is so bad, it's good??
It all depends which drinking game you play while you're watching it.
But it is really just a bad movie. However, it's one of those movies where you may find yourself exclaiming out loud, "No she didn't?!?!?!?", while watching it. Over and over again. And again. I mean, even the songs are bad. Bad, bad, bad.
-
Are we absolutely sure Taverna is Bouzouki Nights? So it looks like Po Po Po may be the only thing I need to listen to? Also, I have a Playbill on its way to me, and I may put the tracks back in show order.
Had a nice, quiet lunch and proofed four more chapters - only found a couple of fixes. The street people (who are actually cutting down my neighbors trees, told me they'd be less than an hour - I left for lunch and it's now ninety minutes later and, of course, they are still there.
I cannot say 100%
But the song listing on IBDB simply calls it "Dance"
And I hope you put them back in show order. As you can see from an earlier posting how badly they are out of order.
What about I Think She Needs Me. Is this the Sondheim song or another song by the same name?
-
I have no idea about the Sondheim song. When I e-mailed him he said he'd look for it in his files - if it was on the LP I would have assumed he would have said something, and someone else (here? elsewhere?) had said the song was not in the show on B'way. So, which is it?
Everything I have ever read about it that it was never used in the show. Yet there it is in all the listing I have googled about the show.
Would the NY Times have a song listing? You can download the review by Walter Kerr (For a fee)
Times reviews don't have song listings - the Playbill is the best bet. Has Sondheim's contribution been talked about on the Sondheim site?
-
I hope that DR Jose gets to eat at Poogan's Porch while whiling away the hours in Charleston.
-
http://www.poogansporch.com/
-
If you have any free days, you can hop over to Pawley's Island (not that much of a drive) and have lunch at The Magnolia Cafe on Highway 17; it's where I worked when I lived in Myrtle Beach.
-
Above all, DR Jose, you have to make the time to visit Brookgreen Gardens while you're in that neck of the woods.
http://www.brookgreen.org/ (http://www.brookgreen.org/)
-
Can't write quickly enough to transcribe....if anyone has any of the supposed Sondheim lyrics, I can check for them on what I'm hearing.
-
DR JOSE are any of the roles precast?
-
There are a couple of lines about her
Raising in him a desire to teach....
civics and art.....and what Aristotle said.....
not just what she can learn in bed......
Would you really want melinda to let go of Jim and have same move on with someone else???
Most of the other things you listed seemed to be more obvious. But what you wrote above is the last thing i want to happen!
YES! Melinda needs to understand that when you love someone as much as she loved Jim, she needs to let him go. Jim's ghost in Sam's body still has to contend with Sam's memory imprints in the brain...and all his skepticism and doubt.
Melinda cannot function properly when confronted with all his negativity.
Yes, Sam/Jim should go. When he finally realizes what he has lost, he can come back and make it right.
So were you being facetious or serious?
I thought that what happened last week was heartbreaking.
-
DR td - Thanks for the suggestions! -I've dined at the Magnolia Cafe before, and it was the first place on my "list" of places to revisit. -I also like the Magnolia Grill in Durham, NC - that's some good eats in a fine dining setting. I will have access to a company car, so I'll be sure I'll make a road trip or two while I'm down there.
I'll be rehearsing "across the bridge" in Mt. Pleasant, SC, and we'll be performing in the historic Memminger Auditorium. Charleston Stage (http://charlestonstage.com/index.php)'s home theatre-space is the (historic) Dock Street Theatre, but it's currently in the midst of a renovation (or may have just finished it).
-
DR JOSE are any of the roles precast?
The show was cast before I was brought on board. However, I have met some of the company members, and it looks like I'll be working with a good bunch of people.
You're welcome, DR Jose. I really wish I could be in Charleston, just visiting, right about now.
I'm pretty sure the Sondheim Illya song would have been mentioned or discussed in Stephen Banfield's book, but I don't have it handy at the moment. What about that other site - "The Complete Sondheim Reference Guide," or some such?
-
DR DAW - let's do Art! Art, Art, Bo Bart. . .
-
Here's what that site says:
Illya Darling
Opened April 11, 1967 at the Mark Hellinger Theatre
Ran for 320 performances
Music by Manos Hadjidakis; Lyrics by Joe Darion
Musical Number [with Stephen Sondheim contributions]:
I Think She Needs Me [unused; music by Manos Hadjidakis; lyrics by Stephen Sondheim]
[No recordings known; this song is not on the original cast recording of the show]
DR DAW - let's do Art!
Do you have his phone number?
DR DAW - let's do Art!
Do you have his phone number?
I do as a matter of fact. . .
Just going through all the Illya Darling tapes, which are very confusing. Of course, I have the album masters, which are being sent to the mastering guy today. But I also have all the four-track session masters with all the takes - but there seem to be duplicates of certain reels but not others - very confusing. Interestingly, there seem to be two selections that didn't make the LP - one is called Taverna Dance and one is called Po, Po, Po. Taverna Dance has a circled take so that one seems to have been fine - Po, Po, Po has no circled take. There is also a reel marked "outtakes" but which contains everything on the LP - so I have no idea what that is. My mastering guy can't do four-track, so I have a message in to someone here, and I'm hoping I can just bring this stuff to him and listen to a few things - if they're worth transferring, then I'll have him do the four tracks into Pro Tools and send those off to the mastering guy to mix together, or, if this guy can mix then we'll do it here. I'm very curious to know what the outtakes thing is. If the two tracks that didn't make the LP are usable, then I'd have to get MGM to agree to their being put on as bonus tracks.
The Taverna Dance was listed as Bouzouki Nights on the recording
Zebikiko was listed as Yorgo's Dance
Songs Not On the original recording
Po Po Po (Located)
Birthday Song
The Lesson
We appear to also have The Birthday Song - very short, one minute long. I'll check it out. And Po, Po, Po is about two-and-a-half minutes long. This LP track called Entr'Acte (Overture) - do we think that was really the Overture?
Maybe bk can straighten the facts out with his close personal friend Mr. Stephen Sondheim.
That I cannot tell you but on the LP it is not used as the entr'acte. Possible it is the Overture, but couldn't fit on Side 1 so they put it on side 2 and made it the entr'acte.
bk and DR Michael s et al - Have you contacted Mark Eden Horowitz at the Library of Congress? Have you posted the question on the Sondheim listserv? -Which has "slowed down" a bit, but trivia questions seem to bring out the posters/answers.
-
Good evening all. My BIL (jhvw's dad) could use some major vibes. He was laid off today from his job as a national sales manager for 2 or 3 tv stations in the Joplin, MO/Pittsburgh, KS area. He's done a fantastic job for them and has always gotten great feedback so this came out of the blue and is a real shocker. My sister said it's no secret so I'm not speaking out of turn. The company that owns his stations and others decided to get rid of the national sales managers to save money, so he's not the only one, but that isn't much consolation. All vibes would be greatly appreciated.
Job vibes for the BIL of DR CILLA LIZ.
-
It will take some time, DR MICHAEL S - but if it will be helpful, I can do so.
-
I am also busy getting ready for a jury trial in the morning. I'm always the most nervous and scattered the day before. I review everything over and over and am always convinced I missed something obvious. I know I haven't and will be more than ready to go in the morning. I have a chance on this one. It's a drug case, so you just never know, but I'm hoping for a good result for my client.
Back from souping and sorting at the booksale site. My assigned task tonight was to go through the book tables and pull "better books" that we can price a little higher than the guidelines suggest. I decided to pull anything that was 2007 or 2008 and in good condition and there's quite a nice little assortment. The best part was that I got to look at ALL the books, but I was very good about not bringing many home. My best find was my very own Messiah score for someday when Richard and I are in NYC during the holidays and can attend a sing-along. He has the score that belonged to his mother.
Dear JMK love your comment re W. / Cheney's puppet strings. Ever look at Robbie Conal's Art Attack.
Dear DakotaCelt Yes I believe Ringo Starr is still married to the woman (former playboy bunny) he met during Caveman. I also think that they have one of the largest collections of toys in the world. And Caveman is a great funny movie.
Time to head home in the snow! When I first got up this morning, it was snowing. By the time I left my house, it was sunny. Then it started snowing again, then by the time I went out to lunch (Port of Subs), it was sunny again. Then it started snowing AGAIN and kept snowing. Now it's dark and I don't know if it's snowing or raining or neither. Regardless, it's time for home for Monday night TV: "Kyle XY" (it's on at 7pm, so it's recorded) and the NBC line-up.
Until later!
I remember the Waltons. Saw John Boy at the ballet one night, he is (or was at that time) one of the rudest people ever. Before intermission, he stood up and at the top of his lungs, said the show was horrible and walked out. It was experimental dance at UCLA Royce Hall, what did he expect.
I had a full evening of entertainment.
First I finished up my work project watching all of the bonus featurettes on THE 400 BLOWS. None was longer than 22 minutes, and most were less than 10. Got finished by 7 p.m.
-
I wanted to start watching CHUCK at 8:30 or so, so I tried to think of something to watch for 90 minutes. I settled on two episodes of THE UNIVERSE on Blu-ray, each one lasting about 44 minutes each.
The first was about everything we currently know about Mars. Quite interesting. I reviewed the movie ROVING MARS a year or so ago about the most recent ships sent to Mars, but this filled me in on what had gone before those. Very intriguing stuff.
-
The other episode of THE UNIVERSE I watched was titled "The End of Earth" which speculated on various ways in which the Earth could be destroyed by various cosmic anomalies. Again, fascinating stuff, much of which I hadn't heard about. This is a fascinating series of shows.
The next one is about Jupiter.
-
Then, I tuned into tonight's episode of CHUCK. Jonathan Cake completed his two episode story arc (always a pleasure watching him), and the spy capers were lots of fun. The stuff with Morgan and his girl friend couldn't have been less interesting.
Don't forget to send away for your free frozen entree at kashi.com (http://www.kashi.com/).
'24' had another magnificent episode, filled with heartbreak and lots of tension-filled surprises.
One of the finest shows currently on television.
-
And I concluded my evening by watching tonight's MEDIUM. As I've done the last few episodes, I figured out what was happening a little less than halfway through the episode, but it was a pleasure watching it play itself out.
I wonder why Ariel didn't talk over with her mother about the specific problem with the geometry test? The talk they DID have allowed Patricia Arquette to give an Emmy-worthy performance talking with her daughter.
-
I did record tonight's CASTLE, and I'll watch that tomorrow as I eat lunch.
-
My work project for tomorrow is Paramount's new Centenniel Collection release of TO CATCH A THIEF. Like BREAKFAST AT TIFFANY'S, Paramount just did a remaster of the film in 2007, so I'm not sure what kind of improvements in picture and sound this will offer, but I'm eager to see as the movie is so breezy and fun that it's always a pleasure to revisit.
And, as I'm sure bk will be interested, this new edition features an audio commentary by the always marvelous Dr. Drew Casper which will naturally make it an automatic buy for discerning movie lovers everywhere!
I THINK SHE NEEDS ME is the third song on Side 2 of my stereo version of ILLYA, DARLING.
-
Sugar has taken me for enough walks today, so it's time to sit on the couch like so much fish and read for awhile.
Thanks for the vibes guys!
-
I'm heading downstairs to bed now.
Good night!
-
Back from the meeting. The head guy laughingly assured us that it would go quickly. As always, it didn't. It should have been an hour, but certain people go off on tangents that lead nowhere and you always end up with ninety minutes. Everyone is very excited about Susan Egan.
-
My DVR recored the 1947 film LURED starring Lucille Ball and Boris Karloff. I have always wanted to see that film
In the meantime I am burning onto DVD the 1960s kid film THE RUNAWAY starring little Roger Mobley and Cesar Romero.
-
Jrand, did you notice that NO, MY DARLING DAUGHTER was on TCM the other day? Oddly enough Rad Fulton became my facebook buddy a couple of days later.
-
Well... Since I didn't pack my clothes today, the "new" plan is to wake up early-ish tomorrow and pack then. Then I will spend the rest of the day organizing and cleaning up whatever I am able to organize and clean up. And since I don't fly out until Wednesday afternoon, I'll have a few hours Wednesday morning to take care of any last-minute errands that may arise. So...
Goodnight.
-
word of the day: did you know we have infundibuliform shapes in our bodies?
-
Benjamin Kritzer and the stairs makes me laugh always. One of my favorite parts of the book.
-
Just found out my neighbor is friends with Rhonda Fleming, says she is still beautiful, and wonderfully nice.
-
goodnight all
Vibes to Cilla's BIL
With a blizzard bearing down on the area, I plan on being a house cat! Matter of fact NDSU is even closed!
-
Driving was entertaining tonight... We had freezing rain last night, three inches of snow and wind this after noon that polished the snow and now we are expecting a blizzard tomorrow... Top speed on some of the streets was 5 mph
-
Notes are written (and long) and will be up right on time.
I've set my internal alarm clock to wake me up at seven-fifteen, and I've also, I think, set my iPhone's alarm to do the same. I'll be very interested to see if it works.
