Well, you've read the notes, the notes were tinged with nostalgia or neuralgia, and now it is time for you to post until the nostalgic cows come home.
-
And the word of the day is: DAMASCENE!
-
Morning all.
That is all.
-
Slept late (for me).
I'm at the office right now and have much work to to do.
-
I didn't even have time for oatmeal.
I will eat it at lunch.
-
Good morning, all! I slept rather well; I remember one long dream involving (I think) Columbus Circle and the song "Let's Begin" from ROBERTA, and another about staging a scene for a film in a room like a library reading room with some of the cast of the Appalachian Christmas show. Lod knows what it all means.
This morning, I have to run some DEAREST ENEMY errands; I'll leave here around 10am and head down to Union Square. On my way home, I'll stop at Toyland to check out the office. In the meantime, I've got notes on 70 songs to write.
More coffee!

good morning to all

Good morning, all.

TOD: So many of the movies I love I first saw on TV, because they were all oldies by the time I was growing up.
The Dialing for Dollars movie in the afternoon brought such classics as "The Adding Machine," "The Spiral Staircase" and "Laura," while the morning themed movies (and I don't remember the name of that show) had Fred Astaire week in which I watched everything from "Top Hat" to "The Pleasure of His Company" for five summer days home from school in a row.
Then one of the local schools worked with the local PBS to show its film class on Saturday afternoons at 1 p.m., so into the house came the likes of "Smiles of a Summer Night," "L'avventura" and "La Strada."
My all-time favorite must have been the afternoon Dailing for Dollars showed Cocteau's "Beauty and the Beast." I was about 8 or 9 and had never seen a foreign film before. Some of the images (the hall of armed chandeliers) creeped me out and really stayed with me through the years.
-
Oops, late for work. Laters.

I see there was discussion about Zumba yesterday. I have no idea what Zumba is and hadn't even heard of it before. I see it is some sort of fitness programme which explains why I've never taken any note of it but I passed my local community center today and outside the building they have big adverts for Zumba classes. Another place for me to avoid ;D
-
A much brighter day today - the first sight of the sun for nearly a week. I went to the big mall for a few things. Also bought some compost in order to fill up the plant containers.

Ditch the Workout - Join the Party ZUMBA!!! (http://www.zumba.com/)
-
It's not Friday today either. It will be a great Thursday though. Right?
-
I don't see the spellcheck anymore either. :(
-
Yes DR DOUG R as you see by DR BEN'S link - Zumba is sort of the 21st Century Aerobics. It is very high energy and you can indeed see some good results.
-
Feel better vibes for DR TCB.
I have spell check on Firefox.
-
Right DR KERRY - even with the rain I am having this morning.
-
My new router has arrived at last. It certainly looks a lot smarter than my ridiculously ancient router and it's even speeded up my broadband.
-
TOD:
CITIZEN KANE
HAMLET (Laurence Olivier)
CYRANO DE BERGERAC
Growing up, these (and others) were "Not tonight" movies. That is, "Yes, I should see them, but not tonight."
So, when I got to the UW Drama Department, I figured now I'd better see them, and when I did, I was totally blown away by what I'd missed all those years. From then on, I started going to theaters that just played vintage movies and I discovered films like THE GRAPES OF WRATH, THE MALTESE FALCON, TREASURE OF THE SIERRA MADRE and, of course, CASABLANCA.
-
Thursday morning greetings! Our electrician was here promptly at 8am to install a new outlet in preparation for tomorrow's delivery of our new washer and dryer.
-
I've finished draft one of the liner notes through 1903 and I have around sixty-six songs to go! Time to run my errands and head down to Union Square. I may log in at Toyland, although I really want to head back home and write. My goal is to finish the notes on Disc Two and send the draft to everyone on the recording for comments before I continue with Disc Three.

The Top 25 Broadway Divas.
anyone missing? Maybe Fanny Brice and Marilyn Miller from days gone by.

Good Morning!
I'm up, I'm up... And I really wish Mother Nature would make up her mind.
-
As for the Topic of the Day...
Channel 20 (WDCA) in Washington, DC, had designated weekly time slots for various types of movies: Japanese monster movies ("Godzilla", "Mothra", etc.), Westerns, Comedies (especially the "Blondie" movies), Hitchcock, and, of course, Musicals. And, of course, the one movie that I still remember falling in love with on first sight on a Saturday afternoon: "Flower Drum Song". :)
-
Sorry I've been missing just a little, and have lots of posts to read that I have to catch up on - hope to catch up this weekend.
-
TOD:
What movies WEREN'T classic, memorable movies that I saw on TV growing up? I saw a wide variety of films on TV...in the afternoons, primarily, but also late-Friday shock theater, Sunday afternoon movies, and the afternoon weekday (sort of like "Million Dollar Movies") movies.
The Tarzans, the Andy Hardys, the Maisies...the Jungle Jims and Bombas...a vast array of MGM musicals from the 1930s and 40s, most of the Fox musicals from the 30s and 40s, and then came "Saturday Night at the Movies"...GOLLY!
Movies that were classic to me then (from all the above-named sources) and remain classic for me now include "Tin Pan Alley," "Lillian Russell", "Hello, Frisco, Hello", "With A Song in My Heart", "Titanic" (1953), "Demetrius and the Gladiators", "Gentlemen Prefer Blondes", "How to Marry A Millionaire", "The Egyptian", "Garden of Evil", "Diplomatic Courier", "The Mudlark", "All About Eve", "Star Dust", "There's No Business Like Show Business", and on and on and on...

Greetings from Toyland!
-
Or, rather, the rubble of Toyland!
-
Since we're almost there, here's one more!
-
And home!
-
Cranberries!
-
I actually didn't see some of the BIG classics (like the Janus Films stuff) until I took a Film Theory class in college (my Prof was Vivian Sobchack, who's now in charge at UCLA). That was the first time I saw stuff like Kane, 8 1/2, the Bergman stuff, etc. Those just weren't broadcast in SLC when I was growing up, maybe times have changed.
-
My mini musical opens tonight. I have heard that the cast is having a hard time counting in 7. :)
-
We did a little runthrough of my What Wondrous Love is This arrangement last night and I need to tweak a few things today. Oy.
-
And I woke up to an inbox FULL of shipping notifications from one of the studios who must have done something wrong at UPS which resulted in me getting sent EVERY shipping notification to EVERY reviewer worldwide. When I told them, they asked me to forward them all back to them. That took quite a while. Oy, oy.

If any DRs are thinking of heading down to DC to catch The Music Man at Arena Stage, some performances in May and June just popped up on Goldstar:

So, I haven't received grades from last semester.
The instructor of one class has left for another university, the other was retired. (I know the latter did submit my grade.)
My new classes are not listed in my academic schedule, but are listed in my enrollment schedule.
My guaranteed student loans have not been applied, but no one has asked me for money.
My instructor, whom I have for both courses, has not replied to e-mails.
Strange, no?

Except I supposedly have a year left.

I'm up, have had a telephonic conversation and am waiting for a call, so no jog today, but as of tomorrow it's every day for at least a week.

TOD:
When I was growing up in the mid 50s, the first major film sale to TV in the UK was a big package of RKO films to the BBC. The films were frequently repeated and through those showings I became familiar with and fond of a host of 40s and 50s stars such as Cary Grant, James Stewart, Ingrid Bergman, Robert Mitchum, Robert Ryan, John Wayne and Katherine Hepburn, and films such as Citizen Kane, Bringing up Baby, Angel Face, Suspicion, Notorious, The Bells of St Marys, The Best Years of our Lives, Its a Wonderful Life, Murder, My Sweet, She Wore a Yellow Ribbon, King Kong, Back to Bataan, Alice Adams and the Fred Astaire/Ginger Rogers musicals.

Except I supposedly have a year left.
Oh, pshaw. ;D

Nice photo!!!
I was pleasantly surprised to see DR Jason.

I am still enjoying my new machines. I hope you are very happy with yours.

I couldn't sleep most of last night listening to the rain. The road guy is working on the road anyway. It would have been better if the ground were dryer.

Page three!

I got a weird note finally from my instructor, who said my name had not been placed on her roster. But she sees that I am registered for two studies with her, so I guess we're on.
-
Good!!
-
I am still enjoying my new machines. I hope you are very happy with yours.
My appliance philosophy is "the simpler, the better." I don't want a lot of bells and whistles and fancy features. We bought pretty basic machines and I'll let you know how Richard likes them - he, by choice, does most of the laundry in our household.
-
It is getting more difficult to find standard machines. I chose mine as they had the easiest doors & lids to open, plus the dryer was easier to get into.

Is this any way to run a railroad?

For much of the first part of our trip it rained, as you can see in this photo by the lack of color.
We took a rather unexciting trip down the river with a jeep ride through flower "plantations" back to the dock. To get there we passed a number of these black pearl shacks/homes. When we went on our Baltic cruise everywhere we went they were selling amber, this cruise it was black pearls. We learned a lot about these beautiful pearls & yes I did get a necklace.
The oysters that house the black pearls are the most pampered oysters in the world so I didn't feel bad about getting a pearl.

Keith only saved one more photo from the excursion.
-
Nice use of the subjunctive, Jane!
-
We have a new condensate pump for our newish furnace. The old one went haywire last night and wuoldn't shut off. The nerve.
-
When I did my standup last year for Betsy's group, I joked about our boys' athleticism and how they obviously didn't inherit it from me, as the only exercise I ever got was running from kids who were chasing me for knowing what the subjunctive was. :)

I am really liking the hidden game in my kindle called GoMoKu. I'd never heard of it before. The first day I was annoyed with it. Because the computer you play against is a genius. And it never makes mistakes. But I found 2 moves you can do at the beginning to have a great chance to win. So now I am beating the computer more than it is beating me!
I always laughed at those people playing games on their Iphones or whatever. And now it is me!
-
Two CDs to go! My mind is fried.
I'm now putting down the liner notes and proofreading the new copy of "The Pipes of Pansy." Dinner first.

I don't mind about the book since it is boring & I only returned to it as I have finished reading THE PERFECT HUSBAND. Perfect really should be in quotes on this one. ;)
The "error dialog" book is from the library, however, it is not due yet & still available on my computer.

Good Evening!
Well... I ended up having a slightly more productive afternoon than planned. -And that included an impromptu meeting about an upcoming event which, I guess, I am now officially a part of. :)
-
And now I need to head back into the drizzle and down to the Stephen Sondheim Theatre to attend tonight's performance of Anything Goes. :)

No, THE UNINVITED is about an old coot in a wheelchair who shows up at my door after wheeling himself from Seattle, and I push the wheelchair with him in it down a flight of steps. I always laugh at that part.

I have to say, on the basis of the tv commercials, these new tiny orchestrations for THE GERSHWINS' PORGY AND BESS stink.
-
Had two telephonic conversations with muse Margaret. First was me wanting to check on a couple of things, plus run three little revisions I wanted to do, all of which she was fine with. Then she had like eight tiny little things that still bothered her (it's her being my angel and not wanting me to look dopey because I'm editorializing the wrong things). I fixed all those and she now loves the book. She'd gone back and read a bunch of it and found it interesting, funny, shocking, and truthful.
-
Then I worked with Shelly Markham and he's all set and very prepared for tomorrow's Kritzerland rehearsal.
-
I couldn't sleep most of last night listening to the rain. The road guy is working on the road anyway. It would have been better if the ground were dryer.
If the guy has problems, Ginny and Richard have a new dryer.
-
Then the East Coast singer and Lanny arrived and we went and had some lunch, then ran everything in the act. It's a really good group of songs now and it's going to work splendidly. Since there's no time for me to really direct her, I gave her general notes to work on. I also took two ballads and attached them to the songs that followed them, so they don't really have a finish, which worked really well in both cases.
-
And now I shall watch a motion picture.
-
I love THE UNINVITED and can't count how many times I have watched it.
-
It is getting more difficult to find standard machines. I chose mine as they had the easiest doors & lids to open, plus the dryer was easier to get into.

Richard and I went to the library, Hobby Lobby, and to Steak 'n' Shake for dinner. It's raining and very foggy and we were glad to get home.
-
I recall well the day my father came home early (must have been a Wednesday or Saturday, his only early days) and found me watching tv. As daytime tv was not permitted I expected to be in trouble. Instead he was pleased to find me watching THE RED SHOES. I was permitted to watch all the classic movies I wanted to.
Surprisingly I did not see my favorite film, CASABLANCA, until I watched it with Keith. I'm glad though as it is special to us both & very romantic when we watch it.
-

It is almost done. He has to add additional rock tomorrow. I can now drive my car if I wish though the road is still somewhat bumpy still & kind of squishy where the work was done. Hopefully it will hold up & good weather ahead will give it time to recover.

The Paul Gauguin private motu (little island) off Taha was very nice in spite of the rain. They served an incredible spread of food along with an open bar. There were vendor's selling beautiful selections of black pears & Tahitian vanilla. Foolishly we missed many of the activities, such as the vanilla demonstration, due to the rain.
I finally got my snorkel mask to semi work when a big storm moved in. Used to lightening with black skies Keith called me out of the water. I think I would have stayed warmer in the water than under the trees attempting to stay dry. Later I opted not to go back in and exchanged the mask for a better one the next day. We had a nice time checking out the merchandise & talking to people.

For several months now we have had this series of commercials that are personal stories that end with, "And I'm a Mormon." Now in the last few weeks we have the same types of stories, but these end with, "And I'm a Phoenix."
What next?

Finished with my viewing for the evening.

Good Evening!
I really enjoyed Anything Goes. Some of the changes to book still "surprise" me after doing the bus-and-truck tour of the Lincoln Center/Patti LuPone version, but I do like the new dance arrangements and orchestrations. I'm still not totally sold on Joel Grey's take on "Moonface Martin" - it's just way to low-key and non-"traditional" for me. I know some people have a "problem" with Sutton Foster, but I liked her "Reno Sweeney", and any sort of "stiffness" is part of the way she was directed. In any case...
There really is nothing like a 10-minute tap number to bring a smile to one's face. :)

Night, all.

I hope DR Kevin H was not affected by today's problems(!!!!) affecting DC's Metro system. Apparently, there was a major delay this morning due to a cracked rail, and then a few hours ago, the whole computer system shut down. People were - and still are - stuck on trains for an hour or more. There are reports of drivers walking to the next station to see if they could proceed, as well as commuters walking along the tracks to get to their destination. :-\

Well, the cocktail conference has started. And it's all very tasty studies.
Any pickle-backs?

If any DRs are thinking of heading down to DC to catch The Music Man at Arena Stage, some performances in May and June just popped up on Goldstar:
Tony-Winning Musical Comedy The Music Man at Arena Stage (http://www.goldstar.com/events/washington-dc/the-music-man-1)
What is Goldstar?
Goldstar (http://www.goldstar.com) is a discount ticket service. I believe they started in Los Angeles, but they now have a presence in a bunch of cities across the U.S. Various performing arts organizations will "give" them a block of tickets to sell to their members - membership is free - and those tickets are sold at a discount. It's a way for a theatre/concert venue/club/etc. to fill up their seats. Another similar service is SmartTix (http://www.smarttix.com/).

I have to say, on the basis of the tv commercials, these new tiny orchestrations for THE GERSHWINS' PORGY AND BESS stink.
Yep.

It is getting more difficult to find standard machines. I chose mine as they had the easiest doors & lids to open, plus the dryer was easier to get into.
Is there a reason why you wanted to get iinto the dryer?
I'm kind of surprised at how some washing machines do not have a fully adjustable water levels. My parents have "new" machines, but the water level settings are "small", "large" and "extra large". -And, I swear, the "small" setting provides just enough water to wash six pairs of socks. Meanwhile, "large" is, well, "large". Where's my "medium" setting?

DR TCB, or any other DR's, have you been to Fiji?
Not I.

Well I'm back from opening night. Some really inventive pieces, though I will say some of these writers "want to be Sondheim," to quote a song Guy Haines once sang, and evidently others want to be Duncan Sheik. :) But some really great writing all around, and all but one of the cast in my show were indeed able to count to 7. :)

DR JMK - If this was "opening night", how many more chances will that one cast member get to count to 7? ;)
Congrats!

There is a button missing on the "reply page," but I am not sure what it said.
Same here. -And I can't remember what it said either. Was it "Spell Check"?
-
In any case...
Goodnight.

Tonight's rehearsal went quite well. We started at the top and worked through the whole show. It's gonna be pretty good, in my humble opinion (IMHO, in Internet lingo). :)
-
Feel better vibes for DR TCB.
I have spell check on Firefox.
Interesting...I don't have spell check on Firefox.
???

I don't have to be at rehearsal again until Tuesday. I only have four lines...what do you expect? ;)
-
HOPEFULLY, a week from next Tuesday, I'll be ushering for the tour of Young Frankenstein that's coming to Olympia. I've sent in my usher request e-mail, but I haven't heard back, yet.
-
Two weeks from yesterday, I'll be seeing Capital Playhouse's production of Hair. I asked for those two days off from rehearsal and they were (easily) able to schedule me out. :D
