Back from lunch and greeted with some sad news: Fred Karlin, the marvelous film composer, and a friend, died at the end of March - the family just now released the information for reasons no one seems to understand. Mr. Karlin wrote the wonderful scores to Up the Down Staircase, The Sterile Cuckoo (and its song, Come Saturday Morning) and Lovers and Other Strangers (and its song For All We Know), as well as many others. He was one of the sweetest people ever - gentle, good-natured and down-to-earth. We did two albums together (originally called Jazz Goes to Hollywood, the Sixties, and Jazz Goes to Hollywood, the Seventies - retitled by Varese, Cool and Classic, the 60s and 70s). They were jazz covers of film themes by folks who knew and loved jazz. Wonderful albums, and Mr. Karlin and I had great fun putting them together and then working in the studio.
