Well, you've read the notes, the notes were petulant for a paragraph, and now it is time for you to post until the petulant cows come home.

DO A DIDDY DIDDY DO WADDY DO.

I quite enjoy Do Waddy music

Waddy playing is not as popular though as the Didgeridoo. The Waddy has a blunter sound.

All right and all left - here is our Unseemly Trivia Contest question - I give fair warning that I may be having a senior moment and this may have been done - so, everyone on their honor and no searching for previous quizzes.

There were a LOT of stars on Broadway in this particular season - they were in huge flops and big hits, but they were everywhere.  In this flop, the star was coming off two huge motion picture roles in two huge motion picture hits.  The star had already won an Academy Award, and would be nominated several times thereafter, including the two huge motion picture hits.  This play was based on a novel by a writer who would pen a book that would be turned into a hugely popular film a few years later.  It was directed by someone better known for film.  Said director had, a few years prior, directed a classic motion picture that would be turned into a musical.  Alongside the star, were several other interesting cast members.  One of them would go on to co-star in a classic new play just a couple of years later, and another would go on to co-star in the film version of the classic play.  Another would go on to star in a hugely successful TV series, in fact, two of them.  And in the play was another cast member (who also understudied the star) who would go on to direct a very successful Broadway play.

So

Name the play and the author of the novel it was based on, and the classic motion picture that would be made from another novel by the author.

Name the play's star, and the two hugely successful film roles done just prior to this play.

Name the director, the classic film the director made, and the musical that was made from it.

Name the co-star who would go on to appear in a classic new play and the co-star who would go on to appear in the film version of the classic new play.

Name the co-star who would go on to do two TV series, and name the series and what they had in common.

Name the person who understudied the star and name the Broadway hit the person would direct.

Remember, do NOT post your answers to the site.  Send them via e-mail to bruce@haineshisway.com

Ironic that during last night's discussion....my COMCAST high speed internet was out.....there was "trouble in my area" and they were "working on it."

I like a lot of the Billy Vaughn albums....particular his "A Summer Place" and "Look What They've Done to My Song".....

Lawrence Welk ( I know, I know) did some very nice instrumental theme albums when he was on Coral...and some of his later Dot albums are nice, too.

The Three Suns are a LOT of fun!  Glenn Miller collections and a band leader named Lester Lanin did some GREAT albums that had wonderful dance medleys on them!

Yesterday, after work, der Brucer and I headed up to Dover to do some shopping.

After picking up some necessary stuff at Sam's Club, we went to Atlantic Books, a chain that has both current titles and older titles at significant discounts.  Yep, I zoomed over to the cookbook section, where I found books on Southern Italian cooking, Latin American and Caribbean cooking, and the foods of Southeast Asia.  I also found a non-cookbook about sushi.  Der Brucer found a couple of titles, and a book for me... all about cooking with beer.

This should last me until the new Rowling comes out.

Since it was practically next door, der Brucer suggested we check out the Dover Downs Hotel and Casino, located right next to the Dover Downs Racetrack (where they have horseracing and NASCAR - fortunately, not at the same time).  What he wanted to check out was what they had in the way of a buffet.

What they had turned out to be fairly nice, for a decent price.  (We were just looking, so it might not be as tasty as it looked, however.)  Der Brucer pointed out that there was plenty for William the Younger to eat, and that Magic Mommy and Magic Daddy would be satisfied.  (Alex the Elder never likes anything, so we've given up on feeding him.)  I pointed out, in turn, that to get them to try the place, we would have to eat with them, which is generally not such a great idea.

When we got back to Rehoboth Beach, der B and I dined at the local Outback Steakhouse.

Their prices have gone up, and there doesn't seem to be as much bang for the buck as there used to be.  Must be because they have to cover their national ad campaigns, which they didn't have when we used to go on a regular basis.

But our waitress, who had a Russian accent (or maybe Slovakian, we get a lot of students over the summer working here), was very nice, so she got a very nice tip.

The problem with these shills is that they immediately turn it around on the person who's called them out.  As I said, one post, fine.  Two okay.  Four - fishy, especially when they're the exact same disingenuous post.  And one of our former dear readers who obnoxiously left this site when two dear readers were having issues (he chose sides, which was ridiculous - not the choosing of the sides, but the walking away in a huff) jumps in with a post in support of the shill.  And the shill, who I probably know. just makes it all about big, bad, BK, even using my name in her header title and inferring that my agenda is to call attention to MY show.  Only problem with that argument, as I pointed out, is that the shill is the only one who's mentioned my show - not me.  In fact, I have made exactly 0 posts about my show, other than to say thanks to someone who posted a congrats to me.  Whereas this person has made four posts about Donald McKayle and his show Roller Derby.

Be forewarned, Mikey, ONCE is not in Hindi.

Don't know Mr. McKayle, but I like his work very much.  I think the shilling will stop now, at least until we get closer to the show, when I'm sure many people from every production at NYMF will be all over the boards, slamming shows that aren't theirs, and praising to the skies their own.  It happens every year.  Once we go into rehearsals, my days of looking at that board are done for at least two months.

Lawrence Welk ( I know, I know) did some very nice instrumental theme albums when he was on Coral...and some of his later Dot albums are nice, too.

He is from North Dakota. He is not too bad. My grandparents were big fans of his and even got to meet him once when he was still playing in North Dakota and before he hit the big time.

Guess who hasn't arrived yet?  That's right - Mr. Time Warner Early Appointment Man.

I've called twice - fifteen minutes ago I was told definitively that he'd be here in the next fifteen minutes.  Oh, well.  I'll wait until ten, and then they are going to get a phone call they don't like.  It's fascinating that when you ask for an early-morning call because they screwed up the day before that not only do they not care, you're at the end of the appointment spectrum, clearly (between eight and ten).  Fifteen minutes has come and gone and I suspect the next fifteen will come and go, and then I'm leaving.

As for the "shilling", well, some people call it promotion.  Hey, it's getting the word out there somehow.  I'm not approving it, I'm just sayin'... ;)

But to play devil's advocate - and this may not be a case where a devil's advocate is needed - but maybe the person really is interested in whatever whoever is doing right now?  And it's all in the timing so to speak.

I used to work with a couple of students at Catholic University who were hounds at finding obscure material for their recitals.  There were more than a few times when they would post a question on a chat board/mailing list regarding the whereabouts of a particular composer, and, coincidentally, that composer just happened to have a new album released, a new show announced, or a production just close.  And a few times they were chided for "shilling", when, in fact, they were truly just looking for a way to contact the person.  All in the timing.

Jose, I agree with what you say, but when a person makes the same post four times, as if they hadn't posted before, something is rotten in the State of Wisconsin.  First post: I just heard that Donald McKayle is doing a new show at NYMF, called Roller Derby.  I can't believe all the great people who are involved with the show.

Second post:  Did you know that Donald McKayle is doing a new show at NYMF, called Roller Derby.  (more stuff about love for Donald here)

Third post: Did you know that Donald McKayle is doing a new show at NYMF?

fourth post: (switching it up) Is Donald McKayle the oldest living director/choregrapher still working?

I mean, really.

Tomovoz--the Sergio connections on this Magic Voices boxed set keep a-comin'--today's beautiful surprise was a gorgeous So Many Stars.  You should get it.

TOD:  Well Mr. BK himself, who claims to be a Percy Faith-ophile, took one look at my shelf of Percy Faith CDs here in my home environment and pronounced me "insane."  ;)  I love Percy Faith and am not ashamed to admit it.  The wonderful thing is virtually his entire recorded output is now available on CD, either from Collectibles or Taragon, as well as one very rare item done by my friend (and British OCR restorer) Alan Bunting.  The two 60s-70s era recordings I would recommend to any DR are "Held Over!", a great album of movie themes from 1969 or 1970 (can't recall right now) that contains one gorgeous arrangement after another of such great material as "Raindrops Keep Fallin' on My Head" to "Anne of the Thousand Days" to "What Are You Doing the Rest of Your Life?"; and "Black Magic Woman," an absolutely rockin' early 70s album of Santana and other Latin covers (including Percy's second luscious arrangement of a song Tomovoz will know--Reza (Laia Ladaia), made popular by Brasil '66).  Some Faith purists don't like "Black Magic Woman" because producer Richard Perry had Percy augment his brass section and also placed all the strings dead center in the stereo mix, but for my money it's one of Percy's greatest albums.

Other highly recommended Faiths include:

Windmills of Your Mind (including an unbelievable 3/4 big band reworking of "The Lion in Winter")
Clair (nice versions of the Gilbert O'Sullivan tune as well as Percy's version of Deodato's version of Also Sprach Zarathustra)

Also for those interested in some rare items, the 3 Collectibles collections of Faith Singles, many of which were never released on LP, are a treasure-trove of early Broadway and Hollywood tunes.

And of course Faith made his mark in the 50s (up through the early 60s) with his instrumental albums of shows, including BK's beloved Li'l Abner, but Percy's classic covers also include unusual choices like Subways are for Sleeping and House of Flowers.

TIME WARNER VIBES FOR THE ESTEEMED BK!

Last night, I viewed two dvds, and my response was, "WHAT WERE THEY THINKING?!?!?!?"
Those two dvds were THE BIG CUBE, which at least has several shirtless shots of George Chakiris, and TROG, which in the first ten minutes has two guys swimming around in their boxers. . .
As for the films themselves, yes, indeedy, they are C-A-M-P, the transfers are quite good, BUT, we get these films delivered to the dvd format and there's still no AFRICAN QUEEN?!?!?!?
I actually enjoyed BOTH films, unintentionally laughing (especially during THE BIG CUBE) throughout and I'm certain that I will revisit BIG CUBE, which provides a great big guffah when a playwright decides the proper cure for amnesia!

Rewhipped has some great things on it.  I highly recommend checking out one of the remixers own stuff.  His nom de CD (?) is "Mocean Worker," but he is in reality Adam Dorn, son of legendary A&R man Joel Dorn (anyone who's read/seen "High Fidelity" may remember the name).  Herb guests on Mocean's new CD.

TD, you probably know that Herb has been re-releasing his TJB output on CD via Shout! Factory for the last couple of years.  There's a huge controversy right now because he's opted to released the "non-hit" LPs (i.e., Volume 2, Warm, Brass Are Comin') only on i-Tunes (for the moment, at least).  If you haven't gotten it, check out "Lost Treasures," which, like the Faith Singles collections I mentioned, is comprised of rare previously unreleased material.

Interesting that A & M (or what ever label it has now become) isn't releasing the cds.

Well, not so strange when you consider Herb & Jerry sold A&M to Universal for a mere $500 million (that's half a billion, folks) about 20 years ago.  :)  Herb maintained control of his catalog as part of the deal.  Herb & Jerry then founded Almo Sounds.  A&M has had a very checkered history since the sale (in fact, Herb & Jerry sued Universal for even more multi-millions after the sale)--some of their product is released on Verve, other on UMG.

So, there I am, sitting at Vivian's eating eggs benedict and proofing the book - my cell phone rings and the supervisor tells me they're still trying to track down the guy who was definitely going to be there at 9:45.  This is at ten-thirty.  She'll call me back, she says.  About twenty minutes later I get a call from another Time Warner person telling me the Time Warner Man is on his way.  I said that was wonderful but that I wasn't there and it was unacceptable.  She asked what I wanted to do - I told her to have the guy come and check the line into the house to make sure the signal was strong and to leave me a messages saying he'd done so.  That message was here and the line in is fine.  Which means if I continue having problems it's either their signal in general or my cable modem box - but since the latter works correctly ninety percent of the time, and actually hasn't lost signal in close to two days, I think it's the former rather than the latter.

Title: Re:PETULANT
Post by: Matt H. on July 14, 2007, 01:42:35 PM
The trip up and back was fairly uneventful. Lots of traffic yesterday afternoon (during rush hour which clogs even an interstate past the point of endurance). But we got there and had a nice dinner at a local restaurant.

The production of THE FULL MONTY was fairly elaborate for community theater, and I am always so impressed with their facility which seats around 500. Sad to say, the show has not sold all that well for them, and it looked like the place was only about 3/4 full.

The six principal male roles were very well cast. Each person fitted his role well, but their Jerry was struggling to reach the uppermost notes in a very high vocal line. He was a real cutie, however, so that made up for a lot! The director's life partner was cast as Malcolm, and while he's a very good actor and singer, he was allowed to ham it up way too much and steal focus throughout. Jeanette was hysterical.

The cast was wearing body mikes but the sound guy was not adjusting volume levels to the overloud orchestra and too many laugh lines got lost either in the music or in the uproarious laughter from the audience. (I had forgotten how truly funny this show is.)

HENRY MANCINI AND HIS ORCHESTRA AND CHORUS,

HERB ALBERT AND THE TIJUANA BRASS CLASSICS VOL 1,

When I got in, got my business finished, and got through preparing lunch, I sat down for the first time in 24 hours and watching something on TV. I wanted something really light and funny, so I took out season 5 of FRIENDS and just picked an episode.

It happened to be the hilarious one with Rachel buying the $1,000 cat Mrs. Whiskerson, Phoebe trying to decide to move in with her cop boy friend or not (he shot a songbird making too much noise so that ended her decision making), and Ross and Joey tossing a ball for the entire episode.

Just off the phone with Time Warner - this time I hit the jackpot, customer service-wise.  Instead of my call going to the call center, it was routed to someone who's not an actual Time Warner employee, but someone who takes phone calls for them out of their home.  Well, this guy really knew what he was talking about and what a pleasure it was!  The first thing he told me is that any problems I'm having are definitely NOT related to the cable modem box - he said those boxes do not short, and can only work or not work.  So, he basically said the problem IS with Time Warner and can be happening because of the heat.  He said the signal coming into my modem is excellent, so what he's saying makes sense.  Everyone else I've spoken to EVER has never said it could be a Time Warner problem - it's always the consumer's problem.  Not only that, but unlike the others I spoke to, this guy gave me a credit because Time Warner has an on time guarantee - funny, no one mentioned that to me until this fellow.  Not only that, but he also gave me a credit for one month's free service because of what I've gone through for two days.  Now that's the kind of person who understands consumers and how a company should handle things.

Rod Lauren found dead in California -- star of THE CRAWLING HAND, BLACK ZOO, TERRIFIED, etc.

The American husband of slain movie actress Nida Blanca was found dead in a parking lot of an inn in Tracy, California on Wednesday (US time) and investigators suspect that the man who was accused of killing his wife almost six years ago had committed suicide, a local online newspaper in the Unites States reported.

In its Web site, tracypress.com, Tracy Press reported that the body of Roger “Rod” Strunk, 68, was discovered by a woman in the parking lot of Tracy Inn Wednesday.

The report said that Tracy Police Department said he apparently jumped from the inn’s 2nd floor balcony, about 20-feet below, as it found evidence indicating that he committed suicide, the report said.

“It appears to be a suicide at this point,” the report quoted Sgt. Steve Beukelman.

Strunk was charged in the Philippines with parricide along with four principal suspects in the killing of Blanca who was found stabbed to death inside her car on Nov. 7, 2001. The actress had 13 stab wounds to the head and chest.

Strunk, however, was not in the country when the case was filed against him. He left for the United States after his wife’s burial.

Philippine police said money and property could have been the motive for the murder, noting that the American had piled up debts and was disinherited by Blanca before she was killed.

Blanca, born Dorothy Jones, married Strunk, an American actor in Las Vegas, in 1979. Strunk was her second husband. The couple then moved to Manila to settle here. <<

On the subject of skylights, I differ. My present home has three skylights, two of them being the operable sort. A previous abode had an inoperable skylight, which always leaked. I concluded from that experience that skylights always leak. Not so. When I bought this house one of the skylights leaked. I learned that the two operable ones had been installed incorrectly--the remodeler had ignored the (clearly stated) manufacturer's instructions and had NOT provided the proper pitch. I had a contractor do so and caulk them adequately, and VIOLA! no leaks.

It can be difficult to retrofit this, however, because the junction of the skylight and the roof is important. GEORGE, I would contact the manufacturer of your existing skylight and ask if they make any operable ones the same size as your existing one, and also how difficult he thinks it would be to make the change.

BTW, my skylights were made by Andersen Windows, and even though the installation error was clearly not Andersen's fault, they gave me new sashes (the portion of the skylight which contains the glass) free of charge. I had to pay my contractor to do the modification, however. So I must say that Andersen went the extra mile and then some.

BTW #2, I couldn't LIVE in this house without those two operable skylights! The extra ventilation makes a huge difference.

BTW#3: some models have a screen to keep out the flying insects.

Toilet Cleaning Instructions:

1. Put both lids of the toilet up and add 1/8 cup of pet shampoo to the water in the bowl.

2. Pick up the cat and soothe him while you carry him towards the bathroom.

3. In one smooth movement, put the cat in the toilet and close both lids. You may need to stand on the lid

4. The cat will self agitate and make ample suds. Never mind the noises that come from the toilet, the cat is actually enjoying this.

5. Flush the toilet three or four times. This provides a "power-wash" and "rinse".

6. Have someone open the front door of your home. Be sure that there are no people between the bathroom and the front door.

7. Stand behind the toilet as far as you can, and quickly lift both lids.

8. The cat will rocket out of the toilet, streak through the bathroom, and run outside where he will dry himself off.

9. Both the commode and the cat will be sparkling clean.

    Sincerely,
    The Dog

I've watched those two as well.  Evelyn Nesbit grew up a few blocks from where I grew up, she was reared in Tarentum, PA (which is mispronounced in GitRVS) while I was reared in Brackenridge, Pa - of course we were many decades apart!  Ms. Nesbit served as a technical advisor on the film , which could account for a lot of its "niceness."  I like Farley Granger's, and Ms. Collins' performances; Ray Milland is bland and not dangerous at all - give me Norman Mailer as Stanford White. . .

Moving on (a Twyla Tharp/Billy Joel reference)--HPATOOTP (one really doesn't save too much time acronyming that, LOL) was enjoyable, though, like Ratatouille, I think it would have been better sans about 10-15 minutes.  The 3D effects at the climax were really excellent and the new generation glasses didn't give me the headache those old cardboard red and blue ones used to.

Next door to the theater was a Discovery Channel store.  They're closing all the stores nationwide, so they have everything (as in everything--even the shelves) on sale at 40 to 60 percent off.  We got Gabe an early birthday present--a DNA extractor (I kid you not--the thing comes with two, count 'em, two working centrifuges).  I went a little crazy in the DVD department, as I am wont to do.  I spent this afternoon watching the first episode of a really excellent BBC series about Egypt.  I'm just getting up to the Curse of Tutankhamen.

I did get the front yard mowed before we had a shower. I felt a drop or two of rain while I was mowing, but it didn't start raining until 45 minutes later, and then briefly.

And luckily, because a storm was coming, there was cloud cover and slightly cooler, breezier air so it wasn't quite so hot. I prefer to mow in the early morning, but we've had so many showers lately that I couldn't chance another weekend of not getting it done.

I went back and finished the ROVING MARS DVD. All I had left was the DISNEYLAND episode entitled "Mays and Beyond." Though the main titles and credits were in black and white, the show itself was in full color, both live action and animation sequences. Part of the hour was a simplified explanation of evolution. Amazing what was allowed without furor on TV back then. Now, I'd be shocked if even something as simple and entertaining as this explanation didn't bring down the wrath of fundamentalists everywhere.

And, of course, the speculations about what potentially was on Mars are funny to look at now knowing what we know, but very entertaining to see how our knowledge progresses through the generations through science.

Randy Disher took part in a bachelor auction for charity in the episode (so did the Captain and Monk), and when the actor stripped off his shirt in trying to impress ladies to bid on him, there was a hunk underneath. I was very surprised!

DR Jennifer - I think it was DR Jennifer - Checking the level of your propane is actually quite easy to do.  Since the propane gas is in liquid form in the tank, it's very cold.  So, to check the level in the tank just pour a cup of hot water down one side of the tank.  After a few seconds, just place your hands on the tank, and when you feel the metal go from warm to cool/cold, that's where the level is.  There are even temp strips that you can affix to the side of your tank that "colorize" the level.

Well, I believe I shall just head in a bit early and stop by the Apple Store on my way to my matinee tomorrow.  Yeah, that's the ticket.  But the thought of heading to the Apple Store now was a semi-attractive option.

I went to Amazon.com to see if they offered chocolate covered pistachio nuts (theyve got a Gricery department now)

And they don't... but there's toffee covered pistachio nuts, and cinnamon flavored pistachio nuts, and turkish delight pistachio nuts!

Hmm.... Turkish Delight.  :)

Hmm... I used to make and Almond with Rose and Orange Water Turkish Delight... Hmm... Wonder where I put that recipe?... Hmm...

And, of course(?), I first came across Turkish Delight while reading "The Lion, The With and the Wardrobe".

I'd still prefer chocolate covered pistachios... although I must admit chocolate covered cashews are an adequate substitute

In any case...  I do need to get up semi-early tomorrow/today and get some stuff organized before heading to the matinee.  -I want to try to get my bag packed for my trip down to VA before I head out, and I want to "manage" some of the piles'o'stuff that are sitting on my desk.  -And, frankly, I'm already a bit sleepy now anyway...

Goodnight.

Raised my hopes, just to crash them to the ground.   :'(

Oh well, saves me from the penance of an extra  20-mile bikeride.
