TOD

Even though I am a season behind in watching but David Tennant's performance as the Doctor in the Doctor Who series continues to amaze me. The writers have given depth and character and emotion to a character that I felt was lacking in all the incarnations. I am NOT looking forward to his departure and was hoping a healthy pay raise might entice him to stay but that won't happen. :-[
Not with that back injury he just had operated on.

We had a cute substitute tenor at church yesterday.  As DR George is wont to say: "Just thought I'd share!"   :)

What?  No pictures?? >:(

It is a simply beautiful day here and nothing like a typical December day. More like late March or early April. Amazing.

I did, however, have time to view THE TAKING OF POWER BY LOUIS XIV by Roberto Rossellini. It's the same rather placid take on history that he showed in those TV bio films that I watched a week or two ago, only here he's got a movie-sized budget and it shows in the number of extras and the grandeur of the production design.

Not a great film (the actor playing Louis is HIDEOUSLY uncharismatic and appears at certain points to be reading his lines off cue cards. I'll be interested to watch the bonus features to see if he was an amateur cast in the part because he resembled the real man. Truly, everyone else acts circles around the star of the show!

I must say it is amusing to follow our GUESTS to the various and sundried threads they're perusing.  Someone was just looking at one from April of 2004!  On that day, I was signing at the UCLA Book Fair AND in Glendale apparently.  And Jay was still posting, and someone named Emily and Francois and William F. Orr.  I received a nice Xmas card from the latter who tells me he's going to try to come back to us in 2009.  As to the others, I just scratch my head - especially re Jay.

There are three bonus features on the disc, none of which I had time to get to this afternoon, so I'll watch them tonight. As for the rest of the evening, I have made no decisions yet about that.

Someone was supposed to call me at eleven-thirty.  Two hours later the call still hasn't happened.  I suppose I shall venture to the mail place shortly, where there will hopefully be a couple of packages.

Bad news from the Dixie front.

It seems that the vets that took care of her girlie parts didn't do a very good job of it.  She got all infected, and der B's SIL had to rush her to a vet closer to where they live.  Hopefully she'll be all right, but our local SPCA is going to have a lot to answer for.

Such as why they've allowed what was a fairly decent and clean animal shelter turn into a total dump.

Such as why they've hired vets who would botch such an operation.

I can only imagine the trauma the younger grandlad is going through right now, being the sort who wears his heart on his sleeve, and no doubt has already fallen totally in love with the dog.

I might even suggest to der B's daughter that she write to the local paper about what has happened.

I'm angry at Gelson's.

 >:(

They stopped carrying my margarine [Promise Fat Free] and there's no place else in Los Angeles where it's sold.

 :'(

However, I'm told that is IS available in Austin, TX.

 :)

So, as far as Gelson's is concerned:

Have you requested ordering a case of the margarine?  Sometimes if you are willing to buy a full case they will get it in for you.  I would speak to the manager.

Closer to home, and on a happier note:

A couple of days ago at work, I was down on the main floor when Tim and Mike (both from the meat department) called me over and asked what I knew about roux.

I, of course, explained to them that a roux is a mixture of some kind of fat (usually butter, sometimes bacon fat, sometimes vegetable oil) with usually an equal amount of all purpose flour, that is cooked together so that the raw flour flavor disappears, and which is then used to thicken stews and soups and sauces.

Did I know anything about pre-packaged roux?

Well, I guessed that such a thing might exist, but we don't carry it.

It turns out that a customer (of the young female variety) had been looking for the pre-packaged stuff, and if we hurried, we might catch her and I could tell her what I knew.  So off Tim and I went, and we found her at one of the self-scan registers with her boyfriend.  She and I had a nice conversation (and she's from the South, which explains why she was familiar with the packaged roux), and I found that she prefers to make her gumbo with okra, and she was glad to meet someone else who enjoys cooking, and will be coming back to our store.

Ever since then, Tim has been calling me Roux.

I've been calling him Kanga.   ;D

Good news Cilla, now if only Jose’s missing gift could be found.

DR Jose, how many times have you or your father called lost and found?
I remember the meat trucks, it was the live chicken truck that really bothered me.

For some reason, DR MBARNUM - there are TWO versions of the movie in this set....digital transfer from the original negative.

Only $5.98 at OLDIES.COM.

http://www.oldies.com/product-view/6636GD.html

MADMEN OF MANDORAS was the original version, but sometime in the early 70s new footage was added to pad out the length of the film, and it was renamed THEY SAVED HITLER'S BRAIN...I recommend skipping the padded out version.

The problem is that ta case won't keep long enough for me to use all of it...and I really don't want to cart what's left to Texas.

Hopping off-line now to get some writing done. Then, back downstairs to check out the bonus features on the Criterion disc and then have some leisure viewing to complete my evening.
