Well, you've read the notes, you know all the props that are being sent to Apple, and now it is time for you to post until the prop cows come home.
-
And the word of the day is: AHIMSA!
-
And a happy haineshisway.com birthday to RKeith, whoever they may be.
-
Topic of the Day...there are a lot of flop musical scores that I like. And of course, some people may define "flop" differently. I'll have to think about this and look through my CDs, because sadly, if it doesn't have a recording, I probably don't really know it...except for Angry Housewives. I was involved in a local community production of it and saw almost every performance of the run. Loved it!! ;D
-
Mack and Mabel is certainly up there.
And I don't think that I can come up with ONE that is my "all-time favorite," but I'm sure that I can come up with a bunch that are much more favored than others. :)
-
And (sort of) speaking of Jerry Herman, does anyone know (has anyone heard) if the new DVD release of "Jerry Herman's Broadway at the Hollywood Bowl (http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B000EOTWO2/qid=1152343949/sr=1-1/ref=sr_1_1/102-4779504-7364131?s=dvd&v=glance&n=130)" is remastered with better sound or video quality or is it just a re-release of the original DVD (http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/6304558139/ref=imdbpov_dvd_0/102-4779504-7364131?%5Fencoding=UTF8&v=glance&n=130) with different packaging?
-
I'd doubt if it's anything but a third release of the DVD that we put out at Varese Sarabande.
-
Third release?? Who else released it?
-
I made a CD of the soundtrack and I must say that the sound is wonderful! Too bad they couldn't release it officially. It's great! ;D
-
I think Image released it, too, but maybe I'm wrong.
-
Actually, Image released this new DVD.
-
The Image website (http://www.image-entertainment.com/) says that the new DVD is 113 minutes and the original Varese DVD says 116 minutes! I wonder if they actually cut something out or if Image isn't counting the end credits.
-
I will read the posts from yesterday when I get home from work this evening. Whew!
Favorite song from a flop musical...hmmmm....first I will say "Sad Was the Day" from DONNYBROOK! But I am sure there are others. The title song from THE MAN WITH A LOAD OF MISCHIEF is fun...but that was Off Broadway, I think.
-
My Stage Manager will not return until Monday....he was AWOL again last night, when we had a dozen people or so in to see the show.
The cast was very good about setting things themselves. The one BIG transition involves picking up a lot of guns and props left after an attempted murder. I planned to do that one.
As I walked out in the blackout, Idiot Actor whispers to me....the clip from the .22 fell out and is beside the couch....it's black....pick it up.
Of course I couldn't see it. The final scene follows and after the bows, we were all looking for the clip. After fifteen minutes Idiot Actor Number Two who was sitting in the audience talking to his wife said: "What are you looking for?" "Clip for the .22" "Oh I picked it up, it's in my pocket."
Then we had notes....at the end, I asked if there were any questions. Idiot Actor Number One said: I thought the rugs were going to be taped down, the corner of one was up in one scene, I noticed. Someone could have tripped.
I answered: When we have time. And with 8 actors onstage, I am surprised ONE of you didn't fix the corner of the rug anyway.
Sometimes I an not the MOST gracious director....especially to IA's.
-
Working today and tomorrow....but hope to get a shot at the Unseemly Trivia Question...several tantalizing leads ....
-
Second three-dog night here at our place. Molly, Toby and Dylan are getting along quite well, although I think Molly just might be a little confused about where her human is.
-
Good morning, all! I've but put puppies outside to do their thing, I'm having coffee, and soon I will hie myself to Brookville, IN to visit my father and family. I wil drive back later in the afternoon.
DR George, I may be wrong, but I beleve ANGRY HOUSEWIVES is an Off-Broadway show.
TOD:
song: "I Wish It So" from JUNO
score: Too many:
JUNO
GOLDILOCKS
MACK AND MABEL
OH, BROTHER!
DRAT! THE CAT
FIREBRAND OF FLORENCE
I would love to hear the remainder of the CARNIVAL IN FLANDERS score; if it's as good as the big song . . .
-
The title song from THE MAN WITH A LOAD OF MISCHIEF is fun...but that was Off Broadway, I think.
Yes, DR JRand55, it was. And a lovely show it is.
-
In terms of flop Broadway musicals, BRING BACK BIRDIE is a favorite, with my favorite songs being "When Will Grownups Grow Up" and "Well, I'm Not."
I also like "You Gotta Have Dancing" from the Strouse-Adams A BROADWAY MUSICAL, and find that song running through my head a bit, although I don't love that entire score.
Favorite score to a flop film musical is LOST HORIZON. Terrible film, but some nice songs away from the film, especially the fun duet between the two ladies ("Different people look at life from different points of view; if you really want the things I have, just help yourself, I give them all to you.")
-
From the film of LOST HORIZON:
(Sally)
On the list of the things that I will not miss first of all is noise.
(Andrea)
On the list of the things that I will not miss is peace and quiet.
(Sally)
I would like to try it.
(Both)
Different people look at life from different points of view.
If you really want the things I have, just help yourself.
I give it all to you.
(Sally)
On the list of the things that I will not miss I would mention crowds.
(Andrea)
On the list of the things that I will not miss is open spaces.
(Sally)
Why can't we change places?
(Both)
Different people look at life from different points of view.
If you really want the things I have, just help yourself.
I give it all to you.
(Sally)
On the list of the things that I will not miss I would mention work.
(Andrea)
On the list of the things that I will not miss is contemplation.
(Sally)
Sounds like a great vacation.
(Both)
Different people look at life from different points of view.
If you really want the things I have, just help yourself.
I give it all to you.
(Orchestra Interlude)
(Both)
Different people look at life from different points of view.
If you really want the things I have, just help yourself.
I give it all to you.
(Sally)
On the list of the things that I will not miss most of all is rain.
(Andrea)
On the list of the things that I will not miss is too much sunshine.
(Sally)
Can there be too much sunshine?
(Both)
Different people look at life from different points of view.
(Orchestra Interlude)
(Both)
Different people look at life from different points of view.
If you really want the things I have, just help yourself.
They're yours!
I give it all to you.
-
DR FJL - Hermes Pan's staging of that (well all) of the numbers in that movie killed it for me. It is ridiculous....of course he doesn't have dancers to begin with....but come on, now!
-
Now I really am off to work.
-
Remembering the Mad Magazine satire of "The World is a Circle" in their LEAST HORIZON:
The world is a rhomboid
Without a circumference
And nobody knows what this simile means
-
I am now ready to begin my trek to the wllds of Indiana. I wish I had more time to explore the wilderness and see such creatures as the awesome JRand55 in its native habitat. Perhaps I can on my next trip to the faraway province of Ohio.
My angry brother came over last night with profuse apologies, which were touching and quite unnecessary. I can't deny they were comforting and flattering to my ego, but I thought we were okay on Thursday and his scene on Wednesday was obviously stil bothering him. I told him I loved him, assured him we were fine, and that he needed to watch his alcohol: my cheap ugly scenes were the reason I now only drink in moderation. As you all know from HHW, I'm perfectly capable of them without a drop.
DR Ginny and I just spoke by telephone: her DH Richard is off this morning to Wisonsin, and tomorrow we will have a playdate.
I will retunr later today with an account of today's activities.
-
Saturday morning greetings! Yes, DH Richard has just embarked on his 2-day drive to Wisconsin for a week's residency at Nashotah House (http://www.nashotah.edu). He's taking 3-month distance learning class in Old Testament and this week is the on-campus component.
I am enjoying my first real weekend off since Memorial Day - my only definite plans are the movie date with DR Elmore tomorrow and something (yet to be determined) with another friend on Monday. Meanwhile, let the puttering begin!
-
My Kritzerland package just arrived with the signed DECEIT. Hoo and ray for the U.S. Post Office for prompt two-day delivery all the way from California to NYC!
-
Good morning!
Day 2 of spring in July. It was heaven sleeping in such cool, unhumid conditions, and while today promises to get warmer than yesterday, this evening is supposed to go back down in the 60s.
I have to pinch myself to realize I'm not dreaming this.
-
Good morning all. I had a great night sleep - 4 hours in my room - 4 hours in the guest room. LOL, I'm not planning to keep Boo, but I hate to leave her alone all the time
-
Favorite song from a flop musical is "Once Upon a Time" from ALL AMERICAN.
I think KEAN is probably my favorite flop score though I do love JUNO and SUBWAYS ARE FOR SLEEPING and MACK & MABEL and WHOOP-UP.
-
I don't know that I'll get far enough to actually submit an answer. But I am going to try to solve the trivia question this time. I've never done it because as much as I love theatre and film, I'm not that into remembering the trivia, but it's time I dug in and tried the contest
-
That's great about receiving DECEIT already. I have such spotty mail delivery, I'm not going to get my hopes up for receiving it today, but Monday might find it in my hands, so that itself is exciting!
-
DR George - Mack and Mable is a favorite of mine too...I'll have to think about favorite song from a flop, though
-
Page 2 Dance!!!!!
-
I'm hoping to get my DECEIT DVD today, but I am in the middle of nowhere, so we'll see
-
It's sort of cloudy here today, I'm hoping for some rain. I need to go to the office and need to clean house. Much easier to get that sort of thing done when it's rainy outside.
-
Page Two Princess Aurora and Prince Phillip Dance!!
-
Today I'll finish YOLANDA AND THE THIEF during and after lunch.
I'd like to get TEAM AMERICA: WORLD POLICE watched and off the DVR at some point today.
THE FORTY YEAR OLD VIRGIN comes on HBO-HD tonight, so I will either watch or record it.
Another episode of THE EVIDENCE is also on tonight.
-
Think I'll try for the 1:05 showing of Inconvenient Truth. I can't believe it's at the Carmike Cinema. They never have indies or anything remotely controversial. They had a big -"We won't show Fahrenheit 911" campaign until it made lots of money....then it just showed up on their movie listing. LOL...money talks
-
Plus, the Promenade - my fav 14 screen theatre - came to town a couple years ago. It has at least one screen with indies all the time and everyone has started going there. I'm hoping this is a sign that there may actually be some competition brewing so we'll get more indies and out of the mainstream movies
-
Well, I'm going to sit on my side porch and read for a bit, enjoying these nice cool, temperatures.
WBBL.
-
TOD - my favorite flop musical is The Grass Harp, which had its pre-Broadway run at the then-new Power Center for the Performing Arts at The University of Michigan. It was my junior year and my friend Doug and I attended the gala opening.
I, too, love "Once Upon a Time," DR MattH.
If Flora, the Red Menace, was a flop, my favorite song from a flop is "A Quiet Thing." Actually, whether the show was a flop or not, that song is probably one of my all-time favorites - it articulates my life philosophy perfectly.
-
I'm up, I'm up. Strange dreams about a local bookstore going out of business (they haven't) and a sale where everything was 1.00, only once you purchased it it was whatever price they wanted.
-
Hoping to have Kevin Spirtas' DVD up for preorder by tonight. You, of course, will be the first to know.
-
My puttering today includes becoming an eBay bidder. I've never done anything on eBay except browse. Today, I registered and have started bidding on an item. Wish me luck!
-
Molly's human apparently affectionately calls her "Molly-moo." I was tring to get Molly to move her pushy corgi self :) out of my way and (naturally expecting her to understand English) said "Molly, move!" and she just smiled at me like she'd done something wonderful, thinking I was calling her "Molly-moo."
-
I like aspects of Carol Hall's BEST LITTLE WHOREHOUSE GOES PUBLIC score as well, especially the opening number and "It's Been a While."
And since I'm on the subject of sequels that were flops, Dorothy Loudon's rendition of "But You Go On" and "You You You (Could Be Annie Too)" from the D.C. tryout of ANNIE 2: MISS HANNIGAN'S REVENGE are numbers that pop up in my mind's turntable and I find myself humming them at odd moments.
Lots of great numbers in Charles Strouse's lesser shows, it seems.
-
Now I can't get it out of my head:
Miss Hannigan (to an Annie lookalike):
You, you, you
Could be Annie
Oo, oo, oo
It's uncanny
You, you, you
Could be Annie too
Annie too
Annie too.
A fun first-act curtain to a mess of a show. Lots of people I respect thought the "Annie too" and "ANNIE 2" play on words was sophomoric, but I loved Martin Charnin's little joke there.
-
Ginny, there are things you should know about bidding on eBay if you're a newbie. If you bid really early on an item, then the item is sure to keep going up (if it's something a lot of people want). Best to wait for the end of auction. And do you know about eBay's proxy system? Also, there's esnipe, which is basically free the first few times you use it - it automatically puts in your bid five seconds before the auction closes.
-
That song, of course :) , became "You You You ain't above the law" in the ultimate show ANNIE WARBUCKS.
-
Most who have my Unsung Musicals series know that Smile is a particular favorite of mine, especially Disneyland, the title song, and Shine (which I would have recorded on a subsequent UM's album if there'd been one).
elmore, did you know we recorded one other song from Carnival of Flanders - it wasn't as good as Rainy Day, but it was catchy and fun. I think Debbie Gravitte did it, but I might be wrong about that.
-
And "But You Go On," sung by Miss Hannigan in D.C. remained in ANNIE WARBUCKS, sung by a totally different character.
-
Working on the final number for PennyO's show. Had gone one way with the tune, which I wasn't thrilled with, but just hit on something that's working better for me. Once I finish that, then I have to go back and finish a song that's half-done, and then finish what I call a "runner" - a little tune and lyric for the start of each of her character's relationships.
-
BK - Regarding Ebay, I've had experiences where the bidding along the way just didn't get high enough, and the seller decided to withdraw the item, presumably due to the lack of activity. If you really want something, shouldn't you at least put some sort of bid in to keep that from happening? Or is that playing into the sellers' hands?
-

BK, thanks for the tips. Right now, I'm starting slow, watching a few of the same item. This is all pretty cloak-and-dagger for me!
Is the proxy system you refer to the same as "my highest bid'?
-
Yes, your "hidden" highest bid price. I've never had a seller remove an item, but I guess it could happen.
I'm loving Constant Contact, this e-mail blast program - once you "get" how to create a campaign, it's quite simple. I just created the e blast for the Kevin Spirtas DVD, which will go out as soon as the DVD is on the Kritzerland site. Took ten minutes.
-
The definition of a musical failing or "flopping" is blurred these days, with the involvement of not-for-profit theaters. If a show just runs its New York off-Bway limited engagement, clearly intending to move if the reviews warrant it, then gets disappointing reviews, and simply doesn't move to Broadway, does that count for our discussion? If so, I'd put several songs from Lippa's WILD PARTY, quite a large number of songs from Ahrens and Flaherty's MAN OF NO IMPORTANCE and DESSA ROSE, several from Menken and Spencer's WEIRD ROMANCE, Cook and Fryer's CAPTAINS COURAGEOUS, and naturally Skip's own TIME AND AGAIN score on my list of favorite songs for the TOD.
-
And how could I have forgotten Tesori and Crawley's VIOLET?
-
DR Ginny, have fun on Ebay! I am an ebay addict and very proud! And I differ from BK in that I tend to bid as soon as I find an item I want. I just put in my highest bid and if I get it, I get it if I am outbid then there will likely be another of the same item along the way someday...of course it all depends on what kind of items you are bidding on.
-
DR MBarnum - thanks for the eBay encouragement! I'm winning right now, but have found the same item on Buy It Now, so will go that route if the auction doesn't work out. BTW, my quest is for discontinued Vera Bradley (handbags & accessories) patterns.
-
Several of my flop favs have been mentioned: Kean, Grass Harp, the song "I Wish It So" from Juno.
Was All-American a flop?
Was Hazel Flagg a flop? I quite enjoy the score, particularly the two Benay Venuta songs, "A Little More Heart" and "Everybody Wants to Take a Bow"
What about Superman? I always liked the Jack Cassidy number, "You're the Woman for The Man Who has Everything."
Jrand, I just listened for the second time ever to Donnybrook. I find it just a bloody awful score...not a number I like it and they just seem to wander everywhere. I have a friend who is currently transferring all my Records to CDs (for his own use as well as mine)...which is why I listened to it again. On each CD he copies, he asteriks songs he particularly likes to include on compliation albums later. No asteriks for Donnybrook. I bought a bunch of musicals I never heard before back in the early nineties. Man With All the Mischief was another I find negligible. When I played Donnybrook enroute to taking The Lovely wife to the airport, I thought she was going to slash her wrists.
-
Back from shipping, and I'm all caught up. The Deceit DVD is now in stock at my local DVD store - I'm curious to see if it sells.
-
BK, last night as we had champagne on the deck, I put on New Guy In Town. The Lovely Wife promptly announced: "I miss Bruce. When's he coming out? I want to see him!" So there!
And may I say Mr. Haines' vocal charms are still as delightful as the first play.
-
Just you and me, BK. Limbo! How low can you go?
-
I'm now savouring the Ink Spots on WMKV...Whispering Grass, into the repeat with the Bass..."And everyone will know because you done told the blabbering trees, Mm..Mm...Mm...Honey Chile, Honey Lamb, Honey Baby..."
-
Wa-wa-Watusi, BK!
-
Now...stroll...
-
Get on your Pony...and Ride!
-
Pop-pop-popeye!
-
Huckle-Buckle? (I'm a dancing fool!)
-
Swim!
-
In the words of the immortal John Belushi: "Gator"
-
Ball-the-Jack?
-
Do the Carioca!
-
Do the Continental!
-
Do the Frenzy! I am my own Frenzy!
-
I see BK is now off. I guess when he limboed, he went too low and knocked himself cold. He's probably now lying unconscious in a pool of his own blood as it puddles around his buns of steel. That's what happens when you lose too much weight. Someone resuscitate that man with a couple of ccs of Musso & Franks' Thousand Island Dressing.
-
Back from my jog - insanity, but I did it. Pogue, there's a whole section on the Twist DVD that is underscored by Gene McDaniel's Point of No Return
-
Pogue had a frenzy - it's like the good ol' days (or late nights).
-
I do like the TAP-TAP-TAPIOCA from the THOROUGHLY MODERN MILLIE movie. But that wasn't a flop musical, was it? And they didn't use it in the stage version, for some reason.
-
I AM MY OWN BEST FRENZY - that's from CHICAGO by way of Hitchcock, isn't it?
-
With Francois on vacation, someone had to say that last one. :)
-
Still waiting for my copy... I hope it arrives later today or Monday...
EArly comments from some Matt's fans and it is VERY positive... "It Rocked", "excellent", a lot of great comments about the artwork....
-
I'm hoping to get my DECEIT DVD today, but I am in the middle of nowhere, so we'll see
Cilla, I hear you.. Fargo is not much better...
BTW, is it really dry down there also? We are on watering restrictions.
-
My puttering today includes becoming an eBay bidder. I've never done anything on eBay except browse. Today, I registered and have started bidding on an item. Wish me luck!
Good luck Ginny...
I just bought Soapdish off of ebay.. I should have that next week also..
-

I have used esnipe before. It is a very handy tool.
-
DR George, I may be wrong, but I beleve ANGRY HOUSEWIVES is an Off-Broadway show.
You're right. Except that BK wrote, "Today’s topic of discussion: What is your all-time favorite flop musical score, and what is your all-time favorite song from a flop musical?"
He didn't specify "flop Broadway score." ::)
;D
-
Well, let's hear some more of the comments! Dakota, please spread the Kevin Spirtas word to the same Days' fans - I'll post as soon as it's up for preorder, hopefully this evening.
-
Ahimsa...
nah... I do believe it is
Ah... Mi saaaaaaa that movie...
-
I can try... I will post a note to DAwn and she can put a note up like she did on Soaptownusa....
-
We are planning a chat /play night later this week...
They are discussing the artwork right now.. Very professional and very well done....
The gal from NJ was in the process of commandeering the dvd player from hubby...
-
I know one gal was going to watch it this evening and within the next few days, the comments will trickle in....
Cilla, i suspect we will be the last for some odd reason it always takes longer for Minneapolis is a hub for sorting mail in this part of hte country
-
Great pictures on the back is one of the early comments...
-
Well, let's hear some more of the comments!
My mail just came! :D And I got a DVD!! ;D But it's not "Deceit." :( It's a movie from eBay...which I'm glad I got, but I was hoping for "Deceit." Oh, well. Maybe Monday. :)
-
I am figuring Monday or Tuesday...
-
Come to think of it I can see why some got theirs also, NYC is a huge sorting center for the US mail for the northeast and she lives in North Jersey near the big apple and that would explain why she got hers already.
-
What happened to the standard for U.S. Priority Mail being two days? Or is that a thing of the past?
-
I do know of one copy of Deceit that went to Great Britain....
-
Oh, never mind, I see that Priority Mail now has 2 to 3 business days as their guideline.
-
What happened to the standard for U.S. Priority Mail being two days? Or is that a thing of the past?
In the larger cities yes but in the rural areas no. Parts of ND only get mail delivery three days a week. That is one reason I am glad i dont live in western ND. It takes a week for a letter to go to the more rural areas and just as long going out.
One poor gal wont be able to comment about the DVD until after it arrives for her in Britain.
-
These aren't going priority. For Kritzerland that IS a thing of the past. I was losing almost a dollar a package doing it that way. Now, it all sort of comes out even, what with the cost of the envelopes and the helper and the labels and the delivery confirmation and all. I just couldn't lose any more money on shipping and only wish I'd not done our first five releases priority, as I probably lost about five hundred bucks doing it that way.
-
The question about the UK girl is will she be able to view it. I made the DVD all-region, but it's NTSC and the UK is PAL, so she has to have a player that does the conversion (or a TV that does).
-
The question about the UK girl is will she be able to view it. I made the DVD all-region, but it's NTSC and the UK is PAL, so she has to have a player that does the conversion (or a TV that does).
she has a dual region DVD player that can play US releases.
-
eBay update: The item I was bidding on went above the price of one of the Buy It Now copies of the same thing. So, I dropped out of the bidding and bought it outright. Wonder how long it will take to get here from Ft. Wayne, Indiana?
-
She has bought a number of strictly US releases and burnings.
-

Hopefully not long.. I bought a movie from Dennison, IA.. I also wonder how long it will take it to get here....
-
A few favorite flop musicals (assuming that these were all actually "flops" ::)):
70 Girls 70
Anyone Can Whistle
Assassins
The Baker's Wife
Brownstone
Chess
Drat! The Cat!
Grind
King of Hearts
Mack and Mabel (I already mentioned it)
Merrily We Roll Along
My Favorite Year
Nick & Nora
Oh, Brother!
Once On This Island
Pacific Overtures
Passion
Song of Singapore
The Spitfire Grill
Weird Romance
Whoop-Up!
Working
-
Just a few of my favorite songs from flop musicals:
All Things to One Man (Grind)
Anyone Can Whistle
Boom Chicka Boom (Nick & Nora - I actually got to perform this in a show...in full Carmen Miranda drag and it was hysterical!!)
Boom Ditty Boom (70 Girls 70)
But You Go On (Annie Warbucks)
Coffee In a Cardboard Cup (70 Girls 70)
Disneyland (Smile)
Endgame (from Chess, the original 1984 studio recording)
Growin' Boy (Babe...recorded by Debbie Gravitte)
Meadowlark (duh ;))
Opening Doors (Merrily)
Our Time (Merrily)
Quarrel-tet (Whoop-Up! I also love the title!)
Shut Up and Dance (My Favorite Year)
Someone In a Tree (Pacific Overtures...one of my absolute all-time favorite theater songs EVER!!)
Someone's Moving In (opening number to Brownstone)
Stop Time (Big)
Trio: Who Is He/Never Put It In Writing/I Talk, You Talk (Grind)
You've Got Possibilities (It's a Bird, It's a Plane, It's Superman)
-
I will have Deceit before the gal in Winnepeg does... :-)
-
Salt Lake city fan just got her copy and her family teased her about it...
Northern Jersey and NYC fans have gotten... I am suspecting that the SoCal area fans got theirs also.. Have not heard from STeph yet...
No word yet from Florida, KY, Massachusetts, DC, Colorado, NY state, Washington, Michigan, Tennessee, oregon, Georgia, Missouri, Mississippi, Iowa, Ohio, Texas, Illinois, Wisconsin, Pennsylvania, Minnesota....
I suspect the Canadians and the UK one will be a bit later.
-
Hopefully not long.. I bought a movie from Dennison, IA.. I also wonder how long it will take it to get here....
We're beginning to sound like "Wells Fargo Wagon" from Music Man - maybe BK or Fred & Skip could write a new eBay song...
-
I have to concur with some of the choices already mentioned.
A Quiet Thing. (Liza Minnelli's version is my least favorite. Practically everyone else who has recorded the song has done it better than her.)
Disneyland. (I like Bill McKinley's version as it has some different lyrics than the one that BK recorded. But Jodi Benson is still the best female version.)
Once Upon a Time is a beautiful song and always enjoy listening to it.
Liz Callaway sings two of my favorite songs Stop Time and The Story Goes On from Baby. No One But No One can do justice to these two songs they way that Ms. Callaway sings them.
Meadowlark. Once upon a time it was a favorite but it has been recorded too many times by too many people and there is no one special version for me.
Someone In A Tree is in the top ten of my favorite musical songs of all time.
Dorothy Loudon's version of But You Go On. She was singing this song despite knowing the show was bombing and not going on to Broadway. What a great performer she was. She is missed.
-
We're beginning to sound like "Wells Fargo Wagon" from Music Man - maybe BK or Fred & Skip could write an new eBay song...
Hey Ginny I like that idea...
That could be very entertaining... Right now we are taking bets on the outback of hte US of which Matt fans will get their DVDs first
Texas is leading!
-
I have been trying to figure out the trivia question. I went on a certain track which had some possibilities but it hit a dead end.
Great series of questions. This one is really hard. Not sure if I am going to be able to figure out.
So BK if you don't get a lot of answers at least know that I am trying to figure it out.
-
MS, I do agree with you, Liz Callaway has a beautiful voice.
-
So have i and I should be cleaning but alas... I am intrigued by these questions. BK is a definite master at the questions....
-
And since we were talking about Annie.
There is a new documentary about life after Annie for the girls who played on Broadway and the road.
Here is the NYT article about it.

The Spirtas DVD preorder thing should be live in the next hour or so. I'll let you know and then tell your friends and neighbors and let's get some preorders for this puppy.
-
Woo-hoo!! ;D
-
Correction: some NYC people have received their DVDs and others have not. I am suspecting it depends on what borough you are in.
-
Okay, the Spirtas DVD is officially up for preorder right now. Spread the word, and Dakota anything you can do to get it on the Days' boards would be great.

I am off to sweet talk Dawn.... :-)
She would still like to do an interview with Matt...
-
Do you have a graphic i can send Dawn so seh can post it?
-
I've ordered my copy! ;D
-
If I had your e-mail address, you should get the e-blast. If not, send me your e address and I'll send you the cover art.
-
We've had our first order - our very own George. Ninety-nine signed copies left.
-
;D
-
Well, I must go now. I have some rooms to clean up and some dishes to do and a whole bunch of stuff that just needs to get done around the house. Later! :)
-
Reading all of the other DRs choices for favorite flop shows makes me hang my head in shame for not mentioning them: MERRILY WE ROLL ALONG, ASSASSINS, DEAR WORLD, GREENWILLOW. All of them favorites containing some of my all-time favorite songs, too.
Yes, ALL AMERICAN was a flop (80 performances), Charles Pogue, as was HAZEL FLAGG (though HAZEL had something of a run, it still closed in the red after 190 performances).
-
I'm back from the wilds of Indiana. My dad, his lady friend, my brother and sister-in-law are having a wonderful time and I was happy to share part of my day with them. Tonight I think I'll step out and see if any friends are free for a visit.
-
I did not receive DECEIT today, so I'll look for it early next week. (I really didn't think it would get to me today.)
-
TOD - my favorite flop musical is The Grass Harp, which had its pre-Broadway run at the then-new Power Center for the Performing Arts at The University of Michigan. It was my junior year and my friend Doug and I attended the gala opening.
I cannot believe I forgot THE GRASS HARP, the 1956 CANDIDE, and ANYONE CAN WHISTLE!
-
I finished YOLANDA AND THE THIEF this afternoon. I can see why this musical fantasy didn't catch on with an audience right after the war was over.
But Harry Warren wrote two tremendous songs for this film: the achingly beautiful "Angel" and the wonderful swing number "Coffee Time." At Minnelli went kind of overboard with all the outrageous art direction (very Dali-esque).
-
Most who have my Unsung Musicals series know that Smile is a particular favorite of mine, especially Disneyland, the title song, and Shine (which I would have recorded on a subsequent UM's album if there'd been one).
elmore, did you know we recorded one other song from Carnival of Flanders - it wasn't as good as Rainy Day, but it was catchy and fun. I think Debbie Gravitte did it, but I might be wrong about that.
I forgot about the Debbie Gravitte song! It's called something like "THAT MAN IS DOING HIS WORST TO BE GOOD."
-
After I finished YOLANDA, I saw the production of BABY I was in on a tape, so I stuck that in and watched some of the numbers.
Yep, another score from a flop musical that has really wonderful songs.
-
DR Ginny, have fun on Ebay! I am an ebay addict and very proud! And I differ from BK in that I tend to bid as soon as I find an item I want. I just put in my highest bid and if I get it, I get it if I am outbid then there will likely be another of the same item along the way someday...of course it all depends on what kind of items you are bidding on.
I do it this way too. I win some and lose some that way, but I don't pay more than I was willing to pay.
-
You're right. Except that BK wrote, "Today’s topic of discussion: What is your all-time favorite flop musical score, and what is your all-time favorite song from a flop musical?"
He didn't specify "flop Broadway score." ::)
;D
You're right and I'm a moron! Spoo!
DR CharlesPogue, I too loathe the DONNYBROOK score. And WHOOP-UP.
-
Come to think of it I can see why some got theirs also, NYC is a huge sorting center for the US mail for the northeast and she lives in North Jersey near the big apple and that would explain why she got hers already.
Then how do you explain George not getting his copy today? George lives in Washington, which is just north of California.
-
Cilla, I hear you.. Fargo is not much better...
BTW, is it really dry down there also? We are on watering restrictions.
Dakota, the whole summer has been a bit strange. Lots of rain in one spot and none a couple miles away. It's pretty dry over all
-
Dorothy Loudon's version of But You Go On. She was singing this song despite knowing the show was bombing and not going on to Broadway. What a great performer she was. She is missed.
I always regretted that Dorothy Loudon never had a commercial release of her great song "Sur Les Quais de Ramsdale Vermont" from LOLITA, MY LOVE.
-
I know one gal was going to watch it this evening and within the next few days, the comments will trickle in....
Cilla, i suspect we will be the last for some odd reason it always takes longer for Minneapolis is a hub for sorting mail in this part of hte country
Ours doesn't go through Minneapolis. We actually have a sorting station here. The postal service is thinking of shutting it down. On Saturdays our mail goes through someplace else, so it's longer delivery if it's over the weekend. Goofy but true
-
Oh, never mind, I see that Priority Mail now has 2 to 3 business days as their guideline.
"Business" days is the key
-
Hopefully not long.. I bought a movie from Dennison, IA.. I also wonder how long it will take it to get here....
Denison, IA - hometown of Donna Reed. They have a great Donna Reed festival every summer
-
TCB, you did indeed order just in the nick of time. We have but seven signed copies left of Deceit. However, we have ninety-nine copies of the Kevin Spirtas DVD, so let's get some orders. Even if you have the CD, it's nothing like seeing it - he's really electric and the DVD is shot very well and it's really fun plus it has a most amusing commentary track. Orders, baby, orders.
-
Salt Lake city fan just got her copy and her family teased her about it...
Kind of sounds like Howard Dean when he was leaving Iowa YEEEAAH
-
I have been trying to figure out the trivia question. I went on a certain track which had some possibilities but it hit a dead end.
Great series of questions. This one is really hard. Not sure if I am going to be able to figure out.
So BK if you don't get a lot of answers at least know that I am trying to figure it out.
I went down several tracks earlier today, but got stuck each time. I"m going to go back to it a little later...I"m still trying
-

I had no idea what I was doing, since I had never entered before. But, I was determined to submit a set of answers rather than run the risk of BK stopping the Trivia Question.
-
This afternoon I finally got around to watching my special edition DVD of Liza with a Z and some of the bonus tracks.
-
MattH: Did you mean to order the CD of Kevin or the DVD? If it's the CD you're fine. If it's the DVD, cancel the payment and place the order again by clicking on the DVD cover on the splash page (be sure it's the DVD cover - AOL may still be caching the page with the CD, which isn't on the updated splash page anymore).
-
Once Upon A Time
She Touched Me
Fifty Percent
I Won't Send Roses
Meadowlark (although I wish it wasn't such a long song)
-
DR TCB - how are you feeling after your first days back at work? Taking it easy today?
Please give my best to all the Hainsies/Kimlets who show up tomorrow!
-
Orders - we need orders. I must figure out what I wish to eat. I have a craving for pizza, so I might just get three slices and be done with it. That's under 1000 calories, so it certainly works.
-

Very tired. I certainly will (but aren't you and Larry going to be there?).
-
Very tired. I certainly will (but aren't you and Larry going to be there?).
Oh, I wish we were! But we'll go see The Devil Wears Prada and think fondly of all of you.
My DH came home from his Anglican conference a few weeks ago with the delightful prospect that their 2008 conference will be in Victoria, BC, Canada. I'm already starting to stockpile my vacation hours and do some preliminary reading toward planning a major Pacific Northwest trip around that event. Richard has never been to Washington and Oregon and I haven't been since a conference in Seattle in 1984. Haven't been to my birthplace, Portland, since 1959. It's time...
-
Finally, the knucklehead (me) got to the right page and got the right thing ordered. Sheesh!
-
Now heading down to watch THE FORTY YEAR OLD VIRGIN followed by THE EVIDENCE. (Hmmm.....should those two titles tie together in some way?) :)
WBBL.
-
Then how do you explain George not getting his copy today? George lives in Washington, which is just north of California.
I guess I am not special enough. ::)
;D

Meadowlark (although I wish it wasn't such a long song)
How could I forget "Fifty Percent"?? I love this song!! And about a shorter "Meadowlark," I have (in a box somewhere) a tape from the audience when Topol was in the show and "Meadowlark" is only two verses long...and different lyrics than what now exists. I have to try and find that.

It sounds like Topol and I have the same attention span.

Those aren't different lyrics, George, they are in Hebrew!

Where in tarnation is JANE? Did she go on vacation or just vacate the premises?
-
Where in tarnation is JANE? Did she go on vacation or just vacate the premises?
Hasn't she been on an Alaskan cruise? And won't she and Keith be at the gathering in Tacoma tomorrow?
-
Then how do you explain George not getting his copy today? George lives in Washington, which is just north of California.
It probably wonders who he is.... and true you are correct, Washington is north of CA....
Just teasin' George...
I think it boils down to how close you are to the main distribution centers...
-
Where in tarnation is JANE? Did she go on vacation or just vacate the premises?
If you were going to be here for lunch tomorrow, you could greet Jane AND Keith on their return from their Alaska cruise.
-
Did they ask PERMISSION to go on such a cruise?
-
Did they ask PERMISSION to go on such a cruise?
Well, they asked me!

-
Just gave a copy of DECEIT that I had bought as a gift to its intended recipient, who was absolutely thrilled to get it!
-
Wasn't there a song that went:
What's your name, little girl?
My name's Alaska
Alaska what, little girl?
Alask my mommy
-
Ah, thanks to google, the entire song:
LEMME
Girls: What's your name little boy?
Boys: My name is lemme.
Girls: Lemme what little boy?
Boys: Lemme kiss ya.
Boys: What's your name little girl?
Girls: My name is Ida.
Boys: Ida what little girl?
Girls: I don't wanna
Boys: what's your name little girl?
Girls: My name's Alaska
Boys: Alaska what little girl?
Girls: I'll ask my mommy.

Girls: My name is Ollie.
Boys: Ollie what little girl?
Girls: Ollie right, "Kiss, Kiss!"

Hmm, some of Kurt Weill's forgotten lyrics.

TCB - Close. It was from THE 4-H CLUB SINGS VILE.

My DH Richard has emailed from Merrillville, Indiana, where he is staying tonight on his way to Wisconsin. He went to the local Greek festival for dinner and is communicating with me via our new MacBook and the wireless connection in his hotel.
-
Hello, hello, hello...is anybody in there.....
-
Where are my ORDERS??? We've actually sold seven so far.
-
Well...DRs ELMORE & CP - you will notice I only mentioned ONE song from the dismal DONNYBROOK! ... perhaps that was more for Susan Johnson's vocal than anything else....
-
No DECEIT for me today....DVD that is. Monday will be the day.
-
tried an answer to the Trivia Question, but don't think it's right. Hmmm
YES YES YES DR Elmore....next time you mosey this way....mosey on left to Indy. I am very tame in my natural habitat and am free to roam at will during the daylight hours....and with supervision after dark.
-
Shower time.
-
And I must say, Whoop-Up, as lame as it is, is a bit of a guilty pleasure for me, especially its Overture - it figures in one of the Kritzer books.
Vinnie hasn't come over yet - he and his ever-lovin' are seeing a movie and then coming here - I think their movie started around five-fifteen, so I'm hoping it will be soon as I'd like to get out of here and take a drive or something.
I had a chicken Caesar salad from Wolgang Puck at about four. That leaves me a little room to have a little something later, should I feel like it.
-
Re DONNYBROOK, I really enjoyed the energy of "Sez I" but the score for me went downhill after that. Loved the LP jacket for that, though.
-
BK, your website will not take either of my credit cards.
-
We use paypal - it should take whatever card you use. What browser are you using?
-
Still no Vinnie - my taking a drive is looking doubtful at this point, as the cloning of the backup drive takes a bit of time - probably a half-hour, and then we have to test everything to make sure everything works as it should - passwords, log-ons, all of it.
-
Good evening!
Quite a day for me with phone calls from friends and cooking meals and watching a varied selection of things. I wish the watching had been more appealing.
-

Oh well LP JACKETS! That's a story for another day! ;D
-
Maybe I should scan something since DR RODZINSKI is on the road.
-
We use paypal - it should take whatever card you use. What browser are you using?
It says you don't have to have a Paypal account. I tried a Mastercard and a Visa.
-
I guess I am now officially out of the modern comedy loop, at least at the movies. I think of a film comedy like ADAM'S RIB for something sophisticated or THE GREAT RACE for something silly.
The 40 YEAR OLD VIRGIN left me totally disspirited. I didn't find it funny. I felt totally out of it in so far as finding anyone appealing or interesting, and overall I felt I wasted close to two hours of my life. (ANother fault - a mindless movie like this is 116 minutes long? Outrageous!) And this made over $100 million at the box-office, was on several best 10 lists, and was give a three star review (out of four stars) by both local movie critics.
And there are talented actors in this: Steve Carell, Jane Lynch, Catherine Keener, Paul Rudd. But they didn't make me laugh here. At all.
-
Then, I watched THE EVIDENCE. The cable guide said it was a rerun, but as it began, I had no memory of it so I started watching. By the halfway point, I did remember that I had seen it and remembered how it ended.
-
I have this album - this cover is from EBAY. I found it strangely unsettling when I was eleven.
The back features a photo of the Brothers IV in bathing trunks. :P

So, I spent the last half hour watching two episodes of THE MARY TYLER MOORE SHOW Season 4 set. Finally, a show worth watching!
The first episode was the one where Rhoda fell in love with one of the owners of the department store where she works. Wonderful comedy and a heartbreaking story for Rhoda made for a memorable show.
-
The next one is one of the classics - the dinner party episode where Sue Ann prepared Veal Prince Orloff for Mary and her guests. I stopped it a little ways in because I want to be able to savor the entire episode tomorrow. What a great show!
-
I don't think you do have to have a paypal account. Can someone help Dear Reader Laura? I asked about the browser because some browsers are finicky about such things, for reasons I don't understand.
-
From my album.
The caption reads:
"Carmel-by-the-sea, California."
-
I used Mozilla Foxfire
-
Can I send you a money order?
-
Hmmmm....I did use PayPal, but I used a credit card, so I won't be much help. Hmmmm......
-
Hmmmm....I did use PayPal, but I used a credit card, so I won't be much help. Hmmmm......
I did the same. Sorry I can't be more help.
-
Now, I'm going to head for bed with the hope that I find some things to watch tomorrow (after I finish with that MARY TYLER MOORE disc) which won't seem like wastes of time.
(Should I just go ahead and delete TEAM AMERICA: WORLD POLICE before I see a single frame of it?)
-
Good night, everyone!
-
I went all the way through using MOZILLA, but since I am not purchasing the Spirtas DVD, I didn't finalize it....hmmmm.....looks like it should work DR LAURA.
-
Bye MATTH!
-
Going to watch the SUPERMAN documentary on The History Channel....or at least through the George Reeves segments.
-
One of the best renditions of 50% is by Dorothy Loudon on My Favorite Broadway: The Leading Ladies.
She actually sings two songs.
If Anyone Had Told Me which then goes onto 50%. She got the biggest round of applause that went on longer than any of the divas who performed that night.
-
Is the DVD of Kevin Spirtas the same as the cd or is it different?
-
Still no luck with trivia.
Damn this is a good one.
-
You too can help preserve the George Reeves birthplace
http://www.georgereevesmemorial.com/
-
Woolstock is a teeny tiny town of 204 people. Interesting they are trying to preserve his birthplace to help economic development
-
Here's another link to a Des Moines Register story about it

-
Well, the DVD has images that move, so in that way, it's different. The audio content is the same, however - but it's a really visual show and the DVD is great. That's all I can tell you.
Dear Reader Laura - money order is fine, of course, but give the paypal thing another try.
-
I'm off to sleep. Night all
-
No DECEIT dvd here in Orygun, either! :-\
-
I know it's not ask BK day, but if I don't ask this now, I'll forget...If we can make all region DVDs and we can make all region DVD players, why aren't they just standard? Wouldn't it make life so much more simpler? I mean I can play records and CDs I buy in Britain, why not the same for DVDs?
We just watched Laurence Olivier's famous Chicester Festival production Uncle Vanya, a filmed theatre performance with Joan Plowright, Michael Redgrave, Sybil Thorndike, Rosemary Harris, Max Adrian, Lewis Casson from 1962 that I had taped off Bravo years ago when it was still an Arts station.
Just watching this magnificent record of theatrical greatness, plus seeing all the really terrific shows they were promoing makes me mourn for what we had on Cable not all that many years ago and makes me angry how Cable has wasted its potential and how all these stations like Bravo and A&E and others abandoned their orignial mission and intent to pimp for the 21-49 year old market. It's a crime that we have no cable station dedicated to true Arts programming and showing rare gems like this any more. It was in glorious black and white and run with no commercial interruptions too!
-
So true about cable. It started off as one thing, then naturally the networks and studios bought it all up and now it's just mostly crap compared to what it was. It's always the way, isn't it?
The studios have reasons for making things different regions - has to do with piracy, but I'm sure those reasons have no real basis in reality.
-
No Vinnie. Not looking good for this evening. Oh, well. Maybe tomorrow morning, but if it isn't then, I have no idea when it will be since I leave at 12:20 and don't get back until after ten.
-
TCB - Close. It was from THE 4-H CLUB SINGS VILE.
LOL... I used to be in 4-H... IT was a riot at times..
We had some interesting versions for songs...
Esp. renditions of Battle Hymn of the Republic and it one was called the Pink Porpoise song...
