Title: YELLOW SUBMARINE IN RED GAP

Well, you've read the notes, the notes were both yellow and red and had gaps, and now it is time for you to post until the yellow and red cows come home.

I've got a new ganglion - small lump in the finger. I haven't had one for some years. The first one I had was about 30 years ago and concerned me at first. I mentioned it to a girl I was working with and she said her father gets them but they are nothing to worry about and they disappear after a few weeks. I accepted her medical advice (!) which seemed correct but carried on getting them, maybe once every 5 years or more. The advent of the internet enabled to research them and establish that they are called ganglions.

Had a fried egg on toast (no spread on the toast because of my broken fridge) for breakfast. After dealing with some Amazon Marketplace orders; packing, printing postage etc. I went to the coffee shop for about an hour for a cappuccino and sandwich and a read on my Kindle. Off again soon for the weekly drinks and dinner up town - looks like I'm going to get wet because it's pouring with rain again.

Good morning, all! I was up too long reading the MY FAIR LADY book, so I slept in until 7am, then I had several long emails to answer, banking online, and here I am. i will shortly head to City Center to pick up the final round of DEAREST ENEMY from Joshie and head to 27th Street.

After my sojourn there, I will return here and continue with the notes for EILEEN, I've got three weeks to assemble this sucker for New World Records.

I'll check in from Toyland.

Vibes for DR TCB and DR DOUG R

DR JANE - I worked in the Business Office of the Indiana School for the Deaf for 8 years.  That's probably why I was so moved by your video from the other day.  Hearing AIDS are a tool to improve lives - and should be thought of just like eyeglasses - they enable us to return to square one in hearing.  My nephew Paul has been deaf since age 2 and wears two hearing aids that only let him hear sound....but he can't distinguish words.  But he is married and works in a regular job...lives a regular life which he could not do without his electronic help.

It was most inspiring to see him get married and recite his vows and respond to those of his bride....still gives me a tear even though it has been a few years since.

That is Mrs. Peacock DR TCB.  And yes there is a total of 216 different combinations - at the beginning of the show, audience members choose three cards......suspect, room, weapon.....just like in the game.

And the secret chosen cards are put in a big envelope - and depending on what was chosen....those are the way the scenes/songs are presented....the audience plays along - just like the board game - to see if they can discover the solution.

For the past year or so, I have noticed that my hard drive space on my computer had been going down and down....even though I never really download much.....and most of what I download I store on my external hard drive.

Well recently I got below 100 GB of space.....so I started looking around on the C drive.....

It turns out that CONVERTX - the program I use to burn movies and slide shows SAVES a copy of everything that I burn.....so I had more than 160 GB of said movies, tv shows, and slideshows just setting on my C Drive......

DELETE.....and now I have 330 GB of space!!!

I don't live on the West Coast so i can't be sure. But I don't think that the Tony awards were broadcast live.  It sort of makes more sense to show them in prime time so more people can watch.

If people posted I suspect they either just made comments without saying actual winners. Or else BK said he didn't care?

I for one cannot wait to watch. Not sure if i'll be able to post. But i'll probably have my kindle with me. So i should be able to write something.

I am really disheartened - to see some of the high school & community theatre clips from productions of THE CURIOUS SAVAGE.

It is as if some of them never read the playwright's instructions about how to play the roles....but then of course it really IS the directors' faults.....either they TOLD them to do it that way OR they LET them do it that way.....

Sad news (or maybe not) for JRand:

Debra Messing files for divorce (http://omg.yahoo.com/news/debra-messing-files-divorce-015701700.html)

I don't think she ought to get any spousal support.  Surely she makes as much, if not more, than he does.

They don't say he cheated on her, but it sure looks like she had her fun.

And to think, it has been 8 years since that pregnant season on "Will and Grace" in which she looked like pure-T crap in each episode.

I knew Mr. Bradbury's daughter, Susie - I may even have gone out with her once, and I have a memory of chatting with her at A&M Records, I think - or some label where she was working.  And the whole family came to see Forget-me-Not Lane at the Taper and we all had a long chat after and I think I put this anecdote in There's Mel - I was driving Bud Cort home or we were all going out to eat or had just eaten (Bud, me, and the Bradbury clan) and Bud rolled down the car window and mooned them.

It was interesting hiking with my group this morning.  At the beginning of the hike we were on a gravel path & I could hear every crunch of the gravel.  In fact, during most of the time I could hear us walking louder than the voices.  I think by the end of the hike I found a more comfortable setting on my remote.

What a beautiful story.  I'm glad your nephew has done so well.  The first thing I said after putting the hearing aids on was how much it was like getting glasses.  I really believe older people who can't hear disconnect faster from the world around them.  I refused to be too vain about getting them which must be the main reason people refuse them, that and the cost.  Most insurance companies don't cover the high cost of them.  I'm waiting to find out if my ins. pays for any of this.  It is a good thing I didn't take the trip to NY.

My question for ASK BK DAY:  Do you like Ray Bradbury's DANDELION WINE?

Do you have a favorite story from the book?

Ray Bradbury just died.

This was the first news I read when I turned on my computer.  Such a nice man.  I was very sorry to read this.

Greetings from Toyland! I had a nice visit with my adopted son Joshie and then toted the remainder of the orchestra parts down here. I have received an email from DR Dan(theMan) who sends greetings to all. He is okay, but his place of employment is clamping down on computer usage. I will xplain more when I getr home.

Thank you for the report on DtM.

I'm glad you had a nice visit with Joshie.

You are right DR JANE - sometimes the cost is covered by private insurance - but there is no Medicare/SS coverage for hearing aids.

And you are correct again - when adults begin to experience hearing loss, they also begin to tune out the world around them.

DR TCB, had you been to either places in Seattle or Tacoma? What fun!

In Medford we had this BLACK BIRD, which still sits in the Black Bird shopping center parking lot. I don't know when it was built, but it has been around at least since the 1960s.

Black Bird Store is known for it's sporting goods, by the way.

We used to go by the Hat & Boots on old Highway 99 whenever we went to Seattle.  When the freeway opened, we never went by them again.  I beliieve they are in a park in Seattle now.  The hat shades a picnic table.  The Java Jiveis is still operating, but it is a real dump.

DR ELMORE did the new book mention the incident from the other book?

No, but he says that Garebian's book is "inadequately annotated for scholastic purposes." It's interesting that Garebian mentions the hairpiece incident since I don't recall reading it anywhere else. My problem with Garebian's "Making of" books is that they pick up all the information he can eaily locate in a lot of poular sources, like Gerald Bordman's books, but he can't form an original opinion or do any in-depth research, also like that fool Bordman. I never liked him and had no respect for hiswork.

Dominic's book cares little about performance anecdotes because his interesr is in the building of the show, the changes in numbers, a true account of its development from letters, contracts, and other ephemera as opposed to the inaccuracies in the published accounts of Alan Jay Lerner, julie Andrews, and others.

I know, I know; I am a sucker for these tears-inducing You Tube Clips from the audition rounds of Britain's Got Talent.  This clip of Jonathan & Charlotte perfroming for the first time in front of Simon and the other judges, is for me the best of the clips.  A lot of people prefered The Prayer when they did it on the Finals of BGT (also on YouTube), but 15 million hits tend to diisagree.

The clip is seven minutes long, but I think, if you haven't already seen it, it is well worth your time.

That's pretty cool!  I've never heard it, so how's the score?

That is eerie!

Every other year, our library system does a "Timberland Reads Together" program where all the reading groups throughout the district read the same book.  This year, it's "Fahrenheit 451."  We were supposed to be able to get some kind of interaction with him...maybe like Skyping, but not exactly that.  Anyway, it's not going to happen now. :(  But "Fahrenheit 451" is still the book that everyone will be reading.

Make what you will of this one, JR:  I took a nap today and had a dream where Betsy came home and crawled into bed with me and told me she had taken a part time job at Subway making sandwiches.  At almost the same moment we noticed a raccoon had gotten inside and was menacing a cat in our bedroom.  I got up and tried throwing stuff at the raccoon, and ultimately found a pyrex baking pan which I held upside down, trying to "bisect" the raccoon with the edge.  Then I awoke.

You are right DR JANE - sometimes the cost is covered by private insurance - but there is no Medicare/SS coverage for hearing aids.

And you are correct again - when adults begin to experience hearing loss, they also begin to tune out the world around them.

Not my Aunt Ruth.  You just knew when you went to visit her, the heat would be at 90, and the volume on the TV would be maxed out.

When you live alone you had max out the tv and heat.

Why do you think I live alone?

Doesn't Nicky have a vote?

I know, I know; I am a sucker for these tears-inducing You Tube Clips from the audition rounds of Britain's Got Talent.  This clip of Jonathan & Charlotte perfroming for the first time in front of Simon and the other judges, is for me the best of the clips.  A lot of people prefered The Prayer when they did it on the Finals of BGT (also on YouTube), but 15 million hits tend to diisagree.

The clip is seven minutes long, but I think, if you haven't already seen it, it is well worth your time.

TCB, are you watching "America's Got Talent"?  THIS (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vbIvmlFDcaM) guy has a voice (NOT what anyone expected from his appearance ;)).  He's self-taught and has never performed in front of anyone before.

He seems sincere and certainly has a fine voice. He said his days of being an outcast are over. I'm just guessing, but perhaps his style of dress has something to do with that. Of course, maybe all his friends dress like that, too. Howard Stern seemed quite tame in comparison.

I thought that last year's TONY AWARDS BROADCAST was broadcast live on the West Coast?  Oh well, this year it is on tape delay.  Great!

I'll have to join the party late. :( I usher/work concessions at a local performing arts center and I told them that I was available on that Sunday.  They've been so desperate for both ushers and concessionaires this whole month, and I didn't think about what else was going on that day, so they signed me up to work concessions starting at 10:30 a.m.  The first show starts at noon and I will need to be there for all four, count 'em FOUR (http://wcpa.squarespace.com/upcoming-events/2012/6/10/johansen-olympia-dance-center-annual-recitals.html) performances!  I'll get to leave for breaks/meals, but it's not what I would've agreed to if I had realized exactly what day it was. :P

At least it's not also Father's Day.

IMHO, his eyes were too light & the wrong color for contacts.  Clear contacts today have a light blue tint that could brighten the blue in his eyes a little bit but not much else.

Had an omelet and a bagel for lunch, picked up a few packages, and did a little work when I got home.  The woman at the Drama Bookshop is a mess - unfocused and ill prepared.  TODAY she asked for information about the event - the event that she said okay to EIGHT weeks ago.  She JUST ordered books today (hopefully they'll arrive in time), she acts as though we promised to have singers when I never said anything other than if I could find a couple of people who were free they'd come and sing (and I haven't been able to - which is another story for another day).  I was within an inch of telling her to cancel.  Everything seems okay now, but I can't really expect her to get the word out at this late date.  She apparently has no memory of how thrilled she was at the last event.  What a bore.

That's a shame. When I was managing large projects in the corporate world, I'd often carefully explain an assignment to one of my staffers on Tuesday, only to find they had NO memory of it on Wednesday or Thursday. I called it the Midnight Brain Dump. And these were bright people! It can be most disheartening.

I have to say, BK, I wish the event weren't at The Drama Book Shop. I really have not wanted to go back since i left there in 1997.

DR JRand61, I asked Dominic about the hairpiece story, since he knows more about the show than anyone. He just answered me:
I've never found proof of that one, though there are plenty of cuttings/letters about other events. The weekend when they all lost their voices is a particularly good one.

In today's San Francisco Chronicle:

Public Eavesdropping

"I don't think lesbians can be necrophiliacs."

Woman, apparently a student of human behavior, overheard at Rathskeller at Union College in Schenectady, N.Y., by Hillary Bauer

JMK , is this true?

If I told you, I'd have to kill you.  And then you know what would happen next.

necrophilia makes me think of one of my favorite episodes of one of my favorite Britcoms - One foot in the Grave through a series of events Victor Meldrew ends up (unknowingly) with a very very old lady in his bed - when his wife discovers this she shouts at him

"Is this what you get up to when I am out? Necrophilia?!"

Good evening.  Loved the Google drive-in thing.  Love drive-ins.  I checked and there's nothing worth seeing yet at the few within reasonable proximity.  To console myself I am eating a Nestle's Drumstick.

Now, tell me, DR ChasSmith, just where did you obtain this sort of information before you joined HHW?   ;)

Before I joined HHW, I was The Man Without Information.

I'm tired.  And through with my viewing for the evening.  One Swedish thriller from 1976 and one French TV crime show from 2005, episode one.

Wow - there are two new "reviews" for There's Mel on amazon - one by someone I don't know called Cutter G, which is lovely, and one by someone we all know - oh, yes, our dear 3D Diffusion has posted her three-star review (I was surprised it wasn't one or two) - it's certainly the most outré review the book has gotten and is more about her than me or the book.

As I think I mentioned some weeks ago, I managed to get an original script from Rear Window, an amazing find.  The same person just offered me three more things and we've worked out a deal that doesn't involve actual cash - an original script for Vertigo (under it's original title, From Among the Dead, which is the literal translation of the original French title) - not only have I NEVER seen one of these come on the market, on about thirty pages there are typed pages on the back of the page with explicit camera directions for those sequences.  Amazing.  I'm also getting a 77-page treatment for Rear Window (a nice companion piece for the script) and a first draft script for To Catch a Thief.

Well, I'm off.  I'm heading up to Tacoma to see some friends that I haven't seen in quite a few years. :D

I hope traffic's not too bad.  We're supposed to meet at 7:00 and leaving now will give me a little extra time.  It should only take about 30 or so minutes without problems.

Be back later!

Well, the get-together tonight was delightfully delightful.  I got to chat with my friend Cindy and our mutual friend Chip was there (but his wife Pennie wasn't).  Also another friend Quincy and her husband Randy showed up!  We all did shows together back in the 1990s. :D

The traffic going up was fine, but I missed the exit and had to double back...and then the map/directions didn't get me to the right place!  It was just to a general area!  I had to call my sister's boyfriend (my sister wasn't at home) to log into my Facebook account to find out what specific restaurant we were supposed to meet and and he was able to get me directions.  I was close, but not close enough.  But I made it and a good time was had by all!
