Title: SALLY FORTH
Post by: bk on August 13, 2005, 12:04:09 AM
Well, you've read the notes, you know all about sally forth and veronica fifth and susan ninth, and now it is time for you to post until the cows come home - they're currently sallying forth somewhere east of Diamond Bar.

I have to admit that I've never seen "Hans Christian Andersen" but "The Court Jester" is wonderful!

As for Danny Kaye songs, I have the original cast recording with Gertrude Lawrence and the studio cast recording with Risë Stevens of Lady In the Dark.  The original cast has, of course, Danny Kaye within the cast and the Risë Stevens recording has bonus tracks of Danny Kaye singing six songs from the show.  "Tschaikowsky (and Other Russians)" is a wonderful song.  I also really like his versions of "It's Never Too Late to Mendelssohn" and "My Ship" in the bonus tracks.

I grew up loving the old Danny Kaye 78s - we had two or three albums, each with five or six 78rpm records inside.  Things like Anatole of Paris, The Babbitt and the Bromide, and his tongue-twisters.

I must say Ireally haven't seen all that many Danny Kaye movies...WHITE CHRISTMAS I guess is my favourite because I remember it the best.  I have vague memories of THE FIVE PENNIES and COURT JESTER and liking them.  I finally saw HANS CHRISTIAN ANDERSON and enjoyed that. And didn't he make a musical remake of BALL OF FIRE with Virginia Mayo in the Babs Stanwyck part & him in the Gary Cooper part?

Never been a real big Danny Kaye fan. Have only seen two of his films over the years. Just happened that way.

Court Jester and the one where he fantasizes. Name escapes me at the moment.

But my father remembers seeing him in a series of short films that were made in NY. I am sure these probably are lost to the ages.

Also from what I have read about him now has colored my opinion on him. Which is unfortuante. It is something I can't get passed.

I love Danny Kaye in most things I've seen him in. WHITE CHRISTMAS would have to be my favorite since I've seen it far more than any of his other work.

Second place would be HANS CHRISTIAN ANDERSEN which I love for the score and that gorgeous Technicolor. I should pop the DVD of that into the player today. I'd love to see it again.

Third place would be THE COURT JESTER. Lots of fun, looks great on DVD, and any movie with Angela Lansbury is always a notch above what it would have been without her.

There are still a few Kaye movies I haven't caught up with. I've never seen THE MAN FROM THE DINER'S CLUB though I remember it coming on TV a lot when I was in my teens. I'll see it one of these days.

I've also never seen one of his first films WONDER MAN. Again, one of these days it'll come around, and I'll be ready to see it.

The Goldwyn pictures from the 40s are usually pretty padded affairs I've discovered, though the Tecnicolor always looks great. But Goldwyn used any means possible to plop those Goldwyn Girls into a movie, and it usually brings the movie to a screaching halt for me.

Isn't it amazing that Danny Kaye was actually third choice for WHITE CHRISTMAS? It was supposed to reunite Bing Crosby with Fred Astaire after their last outing BLUE SKIES was such a smash. Then, when he couldn't do it, it was going to be Donald O'Connor. When he wasn't able to do it, then Danny Kaye stepped in. The dancing that Kaye does with the great Vera-Ellen in "The Best Things Happen While You're Dancing" was obviously more in Astaire's line than anything Kaye was famous for doing in movies, and yet, he handled it superbly.

The BALL OF FIRE remake is called A SONG IS BORN and that is Kaye at his best. That and THE COURT JESTER are my faves.

The opening of JESTER, where he is multiplying, singing "They'll Never Outfox the Fox," that is a great sequence.

I remember watching "Hans Christian Andersen" in grade school, since we sang a bunch of the songs in music class.  -I always loved "Thumbelina", just such a great "energy" in the song.  And one of my favorite lines - "When your heart is full of love, you're nine feet tall.  (You're nine feet ta-aa-all.)"

I don't think I've ever watched "White Christmas" all the way through in one sitting, but I've seen it a bunch of times in snippets.

Exclusive Danny Kaye story here at HHW.  I had to interview the Seattle Mariners longtime team physician once, and he told me once that Kaye was one of the original owners of the Seattle Pilots team that came before the Mariners.

Once, while the doc was in the training room, Kaye shows up and tells him he bets he has better glutes than anyone on the team. He proceeds to lie down on his stomach on the training table and shout at the doc, "Feel my gluteus! Feel it!!!" What could the doc do but oblige one of the team owners?

Last night, way late, TCM showed an odd little comedy called MAKE YOUR OWN BED with Jane Wyman and Jack Carson. The plot is quite possibly the most convoluted plot ever devised for a comedy. But the chemistry between Wyman and Carson was unbelievable! Staying as pretend servants at a mansion, they are expected to sleep in the same room but cannot because they aren't really married yet. But boy do they WANT to stay together. It was good to see Wyman look so sexy and frisky.

Funny exchange in the kitchen. Wyman is expected to cook a full meal, but has no clue how...

Carson: (holding stick-like object) What is this?
Wyman: That's the rhubarb pie.
Carson: Pies are supposed to be round.
Wyman: Well, all the rhubarb they gave me was long and thin.
Carson: How are people supposed to eat it?
Wyman: I don't know, they could cut slices off like a salami and stick 'em between two pieces of bread.

Later she says, "There's something  wrong with the artichokes. I peeled them and there was nothing inside. Just a stem."

The Court Jester, as everyone here knows, is my favorite film from my childhood.  For anyone who hasn't seen it, it's a must - one of the great comic films, and a cast to die for - Danny, Glynis Johns, Angela Lansbury, Mildred Natwick (as Griselda, she of the Evil Eye), Basil Rathbone, Cecil Parker - it doesn't get better.

Where is a photo of BeeGee?  Yesterday?

I think BK is giving us an easy week on the trivia, unless it just happens to be one of those rare ones where I knew right away what it was.

My favorite Danny Kaye was his tv show, because he was one of the first people to regularly feature Sergio Mendes & Brasil '66.  In fact, Sergio did a whole series of guest spots on Kaye's show, which I remember fondly from my childhood.

Yes, it's a rather easy trivia question - I didn't have a lot of time to do one of the really difficult ones.

The DVD of The Court Jester, while an early effort from Paramount, is widescreen, enhanced, with great color.  If you're watching it on anything smaller than a 36inch TV you'll be very pleased.  I'm hoping they'll redo it at some point, because they're so much better at transfering now and it would be a lot sharper.  But, it's a very nice DVD and a must-have.

Mornin'! First off, HAPPY BIRTHDAY, DR STUART!!!!

Second off, I'm in love with Berniece. She and I had a nice, long sleep last night. I even had several dreams - none of which I can remember now. Unfortunately, she keeps leaving a big red mark across the bridge of my nose which is most unseemly! In all seriousness, I will say that it is very bizarre to actually feel rested. My body isn't quite sure what's going on...

My roommate is driving me crazy. That's all I'm going to say about the matter.

I learned so much new stuff about Danny Kaye a few weeks ago, with that Columbo trivia question.  When we played trivia with a group that was here (using the HHW trivia question), someone was convinced that Danny Kaye had to be the one who had been in the beloved Christmas film.  A wrong road, but learned a lot about Kaye.

My favorite Danny Kaye moment (in addition to his kibbitzing with Mrs. Miller on the old MERV GRIFFIN SHOW) is the joy of his singing "Wonderful Copenhagen" in HCA.   Not sure why, but remembering that moment always makes me happy.  When the play COPENHAGEN was playing, I would think of Kaye just about every time I heard the title.

Of course, it has one of the worst songs ever written by Berlin.  Some friends of mine constantly debate whether WHAT DO YOU DO WITH A GENERAL WHEN HE STOPS BEING A GENERAL? is worst than MR. MONOTONY.  Come to think of it, WE'LL FOLLOW THE OLD MAN ain't so hot either.

Waterfall dresser that I would like to get...but they were selling it as part of a bedroom set...not that anyone was buying (!) on this second day of the sale. I left my number in the event the decide to split the set.

DR Jane, if you have a spare fridge, keep your flowers refrigerated overnight. It will help them last for quite a while.

Also, when they are starting to die, you can hang up them upside down and spray them with hairspray.  Then you will soon have a lovely dried flower arrangement and you will be able to remember the bouquet for many years.

Well what a tough choice - BUT, for my favorite Danny Kaye film, I have to go with WHITE CHRISTMAS for three reasons:

The Best Things Happen While You're Dancing
Choreography
And Miss Vera-Ellen!

The Court Jester a very close second.

I will also add THE MAN FROM THE DINER'S CLUB just because it's so wacky.  Black and white with some great support by Cara Williams (a long time favorite of mine) and a GREAT BIG computer!

Songs NOT from movies:

Danny does a wonderful version of Madame I Love Your Crepes Suzettes by Cole Porter....I only have it on a double Decca LP of his songs.

Trivia: (not as good as Rodzinski's) CBS couldn't decide whether to slot Judy Garland on Wednesday or Sunday.....James Aubrey who hated Garland gave her Sundays opposite BONANZA and Kaye ended up with Wednesdays after powerhouse shows like THE BEVERLY HILLBILLIES, GREEN ACRES, and DICK VAN DYKE, and ran for a few seasons.  Garland lasted, barely, until spring.

Telegram from Aubrey to Garland:  "We love you.  You're great.  You're through."

I have watched two DVDs already today. First off was HANS CHRISTIAN ANDERSEN. This was the HBO pressing of the film (I think someone else has done it more recently - MGM perhaps). Anyway, it looked very good to me, very sharp. Mono sound wasn't the most robust, so I admit I did let the receiver repurpose the sound to send it through the surround speakers so it would be a bit more full bodied.

Kaye sings almost the entire score, and he's more than up to its demands. He's simply wonderful in all the numbers and so appealing to the child in us all.  It's a lavish Goldwyn production, and it's nice to see Jeanmere's husband Roland Petit dance the Prince in "The Little Mermaid." But it's clear from his turns that he must have been a better choreographer than a dancer at least at this stage of his life.

I have read in other reference books about WHITE CHRISTMAS being a remake of HOLIDAY INN, but I've never gotten it, either. The stories are totally dissimilar and the scores couldn't be more different except for the title tune.

Perhaps the original intention was to remake it, and someone in charge thought better of it. I'm glad they did. I like both films, but I prefer WHITE CHRISTMAS.

I meant to mention in talking about HANS CHRISTIAN ANDERSEN that I wonder if Lionel Bart got the idea for the street vendor section of "Who Will Buy? in OLIVER! from the street scene in Copanhagen in HANS? It's very like Bart's beginning to the number.

I also gloried in the beauty of Farley Granger. He may not have been the greatest actor in the world, but he was one of the world's male beauties at that time. Funny when he was so much better looking than the leading lady. I guess Goldwyn must have hoped Jeanmere would catch on like Leslie Caron did, but, alas, star lightning didn't strike her.

Next, I put in THE THIN MAN COMES HOME. The movie looks good, perhaps not quite as sharp and marvelously and deeply black and white as THE SHADOW OF THE THIN MAN, but it still looked very good. I noted just a bit of print damage.

I'm hoping the last one, SONG OF THE THIN MAN, looks the best of all. It's the newest, of course, and has always had a lustrous monochromatic look to it.

I will probably get to it tonight as there isn't anything on TV worth watching that I haven't already seen.

Okay let me say this. I hate jen with a passion.

Not only is she a liar. But now she may be going after Kaysar. I HATE HER! Hmmm, okay now i feel better.

She nominated rachel and janelle, but rachel got veto. So instead of nominating james like she said, she is considering NOMINATING KAYSAR.  This sucks!  I know that there has to be some lying involved. But this girl is driving me nuts. I mean she intentionally made a deal with kaysar knowing she was lying. Now to me that IS WRONG.

BIG BROTHER LIVE FEED SPOILERS.

Okay let me say this. I hate jen with a passion.

Jen has said she's only in this to get to sequester, she isn't interested in winning the game. I also heard that she has a small movie role in something after this is over (or something like that - think that was on Canoe). I think she's stirring it up because that's the only way she'll get air time.

I almost wish I wasn't watching the live feed and reading Canoe. It's a different game, but it's much easier to see how BB is changing the game as it goes and how the people aren't all playing the game but have some silly notion that being on Big Brother will make them famous.

Jen even said to Kaysar at one point. " If I had been out of the house I know I would have been America's Favorite"  Puh-leez.

Good Afternoon! Good Evening!

And what a lovely day I ended up having.  I wasn't able to get in touch with any of the "team", so I headed out on my over to The Clark.  What an amazing museum.  Not too big, not too small; and some of their holdings had me in awe - and sometimes in tears too from the sheer beauty of them.

The Clark is in the middle of celebrating their 50th Anniversary.  (The Institute was founded by one of the heirs to the Singer sewing machine fortune in 1955.)  As part of the "celebration", they have come up with special placards that identify some of the works of art in the galleries.  Besides giving the requisite information - artist name, country of original, dates, title, etc. - there is also a brief comment or two from various people - museum docents, members of The Clark, teachers, journalists, even children.  Reading those remarks was such a joy.  People were sharing the first time they saw the particular painting, why they loved it, what makes it "neat" to them, etc.  A very ingenious way to personalize the collection.

After walking through the galleries, I decided to head outside and walk one of their hiking/walking trails that are on the grounds of The Clark.  I started where a sign said "Trail Starts Here", but after a couple of feet I wasn't sure I was actually on the trail.  There was no one else out walking when I was.  And parts of trail just looked a little too "rustic" if you get my drift.  But soon I noticed that they had marked the trees with small squares of white reflective material - they indicated that you were still on the trail - or where to go should you come to a fork.  It was quite a nice hike, and I got a nice workout in the process.  When the brochure said "hill", it meant "hill".

It took me about an hour to walk the loop - about a mile and half.  And, yes, I did take pictures.  So...

And since the museum is currently hosting a special exhibition of the works of Jean-Louis David entitled "Empire to Exile", the "following" was perched at the entrance driveway.

And what an exhibition!  The focus is on the paintings from the later years of David's life which happens to include his portraits of Napoleon, Napoleon's family, friends, and court; paintings of classical and mythological subjects; and his paintings reflecting his political stance during the "Reign of Terror".

The Napoleonic portraits are stunners.  However, some of the portraits commissioned by some of his other patrons are just as impressive.

And there's even a room devoted to some of his larger canvases - canvases too large to travel.  Instead, they have some of the studies on display, and then a real-size enlargement of a section of the painting, a detail.  I kept trying to find information on just how large some of those paintings are, but I did not spy that information provided in the descriptions.  However, judging from one of the details, I'm guessing one of them had to be somewhere in the neighborhood of 20x12 feet.  Or possibly even larger.

DR Cillaliz, I actually love reading canoe and reading about the live feeds more than i like watching the show.  It's like a whole secret part of the show, that only some of us are privy too.

Anyhow I had to tape tonight's show because I was caught up in watching Veronica Mars (friday's episode). Even though the CBS show from friday is one ahead of where i'm at, I actually think that the story continued very nicely from the last episode i saw (sometimes they skip a week when continuing stories).

After I had completed my trek, I decided to walk over to Spring Street to get some dinner.  I had been craving Indian food for the past few days, so I settled in at Spice Root.  I had a very good meal.  My only "quibble" was that my Lamb Vindaloo was not as vindaloo-ish as I'm used to.  Vindaloos usually pack quite a punch not only from the chile peppers and spices, but also a distinct bite from vinegar.  The food was hot, but not "hot hot" - at least to my palate.  But, nevertheless, I did enjoy my food.

A group of Indians came in shortly after me, and one of them ordered the Lamb Vindaloo too.  I tried to hang out until their orders came to their table to gauge their "response", but, alas, I needed to get my dessert... Ice cream!

And for my final pic of the day...

The small(!), independent movie theatre here in Williamstown sponsors an "Acoustic Alley" series.  Tonight's guest was cellist, Trevor Exter.  And, man, could this guy rock!  And, yes, with a cello!  He basically treated it like a big guitar, even strumming chords at times.  I only hung out for a couple of songs, but he did some originals as well as some covers.  A very cool way to spend a few minutes... while finishing my ice cream.

I just finished watching "It Happened at the World's Fair" with Elvis.  It was filmed in Seattle during the 1962 Seattle World's Fair and I'd never seen it before.  I didn't see the first half hour, but it was very easy to figure out what it was all about.  Evidently CMT is having an Elvis marathon.  "Viva Las Vega" just started.

What I find most interesting about these movies is not the actors/actresses or the stories, but that the cities have changed so much since they were filmed.

You're most welcome!

I really am glad I decided to venture out on my own today.  I needed the "by myself" time - especially after yesterday's very long day.  And since we're about to go into tech heck...  The peace and quiet was good.  -It really was cool walking through the forest all alone.

I was also very happy that the weather had cleared up and that the temps had dropped too.  When I first headed out, the sky was very gray, and I was expecting rain.  But when I reached the top of the trail, most of the sky had cleared, and there was just a bit of haze in the distance.  A nice summer day.

Security had to be called when these three ruffians appeared on the premises.

I think you know who they are (but just in case L to R: Nick Redman, DR Charles Pogue, and Bruce Kimmel)

I really enjoyed our brief encounters at the show...very entertaining gentlemen they are!  :D

Oh, my, I'm enjoying all the lovely pictures lately - Jane's flowers, Jose's tour of Williamstown, MBarnum's trip to Burbank.  Thanks, everyone!

Jose, on my drive home from work today I was listening to All Things Considered and they had a nice segment on the apprentice program at WTF.  Maybe you can find it online.

Weather report from SW Ohio - my new car has a digital readout on the dash of the outside temperature.  When I got in to leave work, it read 3 figures - 100!  Hope some of Cillaliz's cool Iowa weather is blowing this way!

Thank you.

And thanks for the heads up on the WTF story on NPR.  I just pulled up the page at npr.org, and shall give it a listen shortly.

And I believe the temp here got up to 88 today, and it is currently 73 with 86% humidity.  Ah, well...

And the rains are finally due tomorrow...

Here are 3 of the most delightful movie actresses I have ever met....Ms. Marcia Mae Jones, Ms. Jean Porter, and Ms. Edith Fellows.

Many of you remember Marcia Mae as a kid actor in films such as THESE THREE and the Shirley Temple films HEIDI and THE LITTLE PRINCESS.

Jean co-starred with Mickey Rooney and Judy Garland in BABES ON BROADWAY and again with Mickey in ANDY HARDY'S BLONDE TROUBLE.

Edith Fellows (who I with BK would have had a chance to meet on Sunday) starred in the 1930 version of PENNIES FROM HEAVEN and in MRS WIGGS OF THE CABBAGE PATCH, and 1934s JANE EYRE.

All three have been best friends since 1936!!  And boy do they have fun together!

Pesto (this is NOT the low-fat one I mentioned earlier ;))

3 packed cups fresh basil leaves (no stems_
2 large cloves fresh garlic
1/2 cup pinenuts, walnuts, almonds (or combo)
3/4 cup packed fresh chopped parsley
3/4 cup fresh grated parmesan
1/2 cup olive oil
1/4 cup melted butter (Betsy says to reduce this amount, put a little more cheese in instead)
salt to taste

Combine everything in a blender on low, then medium.  Leave the cover off then get a ladder and lick the pesto off of your ceiling.  (Sorry, that last part I just made up).

Low-fat Pesto (I actually prefer this one, it's amazingly creamy but not too rich, and look at the ingredients--weird that it is so "classically" pesto-esque)

10 oz. fresh spinach
1/2 cup toasted walnuts, coarsely chopped
2 cups lowfat cottage cheese
1 garlic clove, minced or pressed
1/4 cup grated parmesan
1/4 cup loosely packed chopped fresh basil
1/2 tsp. salt
pepper to taste

Wash spinach, transfer to separate large pot.  Cover and cook for 4 mins until wilted but still bright green.  Drain, blend with rest of ingredients in food processor or blender, leaving cover off so that pesto can be licked from ceiling (per classic pesto recipe).

Butter in pesto?  I'd say leave it out all together, and just add some more olive oil to bring it to your desired consistency.  And if you happen to be using the pesto immediately on pasta, then be sure to add a tablespoon or two of the hot pasta water to the pesto too.

A slight correction... When making pesto in a food processor with the cover off (which is practically impossible to do due to safety features, in any case..) you will not be licking the pesto off the ceiling.  Instead, you will be licking it off the kitchen cabinets, the backsplash and your shirt.  Your clean, white shirt.

First up for me tonight was JUST AROUND THE CORNER, a Shirley Temple movie recorded off the Fox Movie Channel.

After bk trashed the transfer of the Temple movie on DVD he saw the other day, I was curious how this was going to look. The first half was pretty bad with water marks everywhere and lots of dirt and speckles. Curiously, at about the halfway point, all that damage and those artifacts kind of vanished and what was left was a very nice picture.

Fox ought to be shot for not taking better care of these movies. I guess they figure it wouldn't be worth the money to restore them (I guess Shirley is no longer the box-office draw she once was), but it's pretty depressing seeing the films in such awful shape.

You have lots of surprises ahead, both good and bad. It's an amazing show with a first rate cast. The second season grows even richer and more dramatic.

I know it won't win the Emmy next month, but it's entirely worthy.

ANd I finished my evening viewing with CSI: NEW YORK from Wednesday night. This must have been one of the episodes from later in the season. After getting off to a strong start in the ratings, ratings for this show dropped alarmingly, so midseason, CBS started instituting changes starting with changing the look of the show. It had been desaturated of color making everyone look like a Dracula victim. In this episode, the colors were much more normal in appearance. There was also more effort to show a less abrasive side of the investigators.

I'll be curious to see if the changes will reflect in renewed ratings once the new season starts.

Quote
Even when you're on top of the world it gets harder.  Because what goes up must come down and I had to learn that the career of an actor is not when you're working, it's when you're not working.

Well, it's what you've all been waiting for.  Well, some of you.  Well, actually, according to the posts tonight, maybe just one of you.  One particular DR.  In any case...

(cue Elgar's "Pomp and Circumstance, No. 1" - just the "processional" section, please)

I'm not exactly sure how I feel about reaching this milestone.  The road to here was not an easy one.  There were a few patches of just mild creativity and forced humor.  And for every long-winded post there were at least eight to ten modestly word ones.  From prattling to palaverous.  Terse to tautological.  And everything in between.

But amidst all the blather and padding, there were a few moments of inspired repartee and inspired, if at times cliched, verbal volleying.

Oh, yes, and one must not forget the ever-present and ever-useful smileys.

:) :( ;) :D ;D etc., etc., etc.

Alas, I am also fully aware that others have already achieved and surpassed this milestone.  And I shall honor them by continuing to strive to surpass them.  Although, that may seem like my personal windmill of sorts - it is, nonetheless, an honorable mission, and a responsibility I do not take lightly.

So, as I approach the moment when I must hit "Post", I leave you with the following questions to ponder:

If a picture paints a thousand words, then why can't I paint you?

Who put the bomp in the bomp bah bomp bah bomp?
Who put the ram in the rama lama ding dong?
Who put the bop in the bop shoo bop shoo bop?
Who put the dip in the dip da dip da dip?

Does your chewing gum lose it's flavor on the bedpost overnight?

Isn't it rich?
Isn't it queer?

Why do birds suddenly appear every time you are near?
Why do stars fall down from the sky every time you walk by?

Why, oh why, oh why, oh - Why did I ever leave Ohio?

Are there stars out tonight?

What are you doing the rest of your life?

Are you pondering?  Is the music too loud?

And, so without further ado...

Thank you for reading Post 8000!!!!

I was flipping channels and on one of the PBS channels, they have a "musical tour of Russia" with Helmut Lotti.  If you don't know who he is, he's a Begian singer with a wonderful trained voice.  Anyway, he was singing this one song called "Kalinka" and the video scenario that he sang it in was a wedding.  So just out of curiosity, I turned on the subtitles and they had what appeared to be the correct lyrics.  But what struck me (mainly, because I'd never thought about it before) was when he sang "HEY" (as it's spelled in English), it was spelled "CHEJ."  Interesting, huh? ;D

Here's a picture of Helmut:

Good Evening!

And just when I thought this day couldn't get any better, I happened to get a response to an e-mail I sent out earlier in the week.  Through the assistance of DR Jason, I was able to secure an e-mail address for a friend of mine from high school - who I haven't seen since high school. I can honestly say that he was my inspiration - without him as a role model, I seriously doubt I would have started down the road to a career in music, making music.  I've mentioned him, Bryan Louiselle, before in one of those "long lost friends" topics, and a couple of DRs even managed to come up with an address for him.  Well, in this day and age, an e-mail address turned out to be a surer bet than snail mail address, so...  While Googling a couple of days ago, I found out that Bryan has been working on the Disney shows for MTI's Broadway, Jr. series, so...  And then it turned out that DR Jason knew him, so...  In any case...

What a great way to wrap up the day!  And once I'm back in the city, and once his ever-crazy schedule eases up, we're going to get together.

And in "it's a small world" category, it turns out he's buddies with Roger Rees - I guess they must have met during those tumultuous rehearsals and previews for The Red Shoes - Bryan was the assistant conductor, and Roger was the original Boris Lermontov.  So, Bryan passed on a special greeting that I'm supposed to greet Roger with the next time I see him.  Hmm... We shall see.  ;)

In any case... It's so nice connecting with him again - even if it's just through an e-mail at this point and time.  -Even the air feels cooler now.

:)

I only mention it when I notice it, which (hopefully) isn't that often.  I don't look for it, though.  It just popped out at me, so I mentioned it. ::)

Hmmm, I suspect that TCB will have something to say!  :D

Oh...

Just got an e-mail from the stage manager... Due to some scheduling issues, they had to flip the schedule for tomorrow.  Instead of doing our run-thru at 5:00, we will now be doing it at 11:00 - with our call being at 10:00 to run some small spots beforehand.

And the powers that be will be in attendance.  Including Roger Rees.

Guess I should think about getting to bed soon...

Fast forward (or backward) to Monday in Burbank...I rented a car Sunday evening and drove all over the place! On Monday I motored over the hill to Los Angeles to visit my interviewee Carolyn Kearney (star of THING THAT COULDN'T DIE, HOT ROD GIRL, and DAMN CITIZEN). Carolyn had suffered a heart attack last December and had to endure heart by-pass surgery. She is doing much better now which was a huge relief to me as she is such a sweetheart and I adore her. I drove to her apartment and had coffee with her, her husband Al, and their wonderful dog Koda (who I have threatened to take back to Oregon with me on more then one occasion).

Carolyn is holding an award she received from the Pasadena Playhouse. the Playhouse contacted her after my interview with her was published in Filmfax magazine. She attended the Playhouse in the early 50s, and CBS (I think it was) even did a television documentary on her while she was a student there.

I don't recall what the award was for, but she was quite thrilled by it, and I was thrilled for her.

Before visiting with Carolyn, Al, and Koda, I drove over to Sherbourne Ave, which was only a few blocks from Carolyn's apartment building.

Sherbourne Ave. as some may recall is where our own BK spent his childhood...and here is the house in which he lived!

Pt. Defiance Park, which is Tacoma's version of Central Park is about a block and a half from my apartment.  Tonight it is apparently their turn to play host to Movies in the Park, where they show family films outdoors on big screens in various parks in the city.  Tongiht they are showing THE MUSIC MAN.  Unfortunately, the dialogue is just a notch below my hearing level, but the musical numbers are coming through the window loud and clear!!!

And here, just a short walk from BKs childhood abode, is the corner of Sherbourne and, I think it was, 18th. BK is that correct?

I tried to get the lovely lass walking her dogs in the shot, for the hetero males in the audience.

It was a nice, neat, quiet neighborhood and I walked around it for a few blocks.

As I mentioned earlier or was it Harry?

I went to see Phillip Officer this evening a wonderful singer and perforner and a sweetheart of a person. I might even go back next week to see him again.

Yep, Sherbourne and 18th.  I would walk east up 18th holding my cardboard TV camera and pretending I was doing a live TV show.

I don't know if Shirley Jones has had work done or not...if she did it was not obvious, like it is for many other older actresses and actors.

I don't know how many Our Gang kids are left....there were hundreds of them over the years (lots of one timers), but of the most popular regulars Porky is still around, and Shirley Jean Rickert, and Joy Lane, and of course Butch, and Edith Fellows, and even Marcia Mae was a one time Our Gang member. Dorothy DeBorba is still alive as well and one of the gals from the silent Our Gang comedies is still alive as I recall.
