For the culturally unaware in our nation's hinterlands (you, DR Laura) I offer this bit of understated prose:

LA TIMES
Quote
So at last we have come to this – tonight on the Kodak stage the eyes of a nation will be on two young singers as they meet in a final gladiatorial death match.  Resting on their performances tonight – whether Jordin Sparks or Blake Lewis will join Kelly Clarkson, Ruben Studdard, Fantasia Barrino, Carrie Underwood and Taylor Hicks on the opening credits elevator ride to stardom.

Tonight, America will face perhaps its toughest decision of the decade.  At this hour, somewhere backstage at the Kodak, two very young people prepare for the fate of a nation to fall on their shoulders.  Who will rise to the challenge?

Brings to tears to the eyes....

I wouldn't call DearReaderLaura so much "culturally unaware"; rather, I would call her the "voice of the resistance."

did you all know that Yul Brynner's lovers included Hurd Hatfield

It gives a whole new added layer of meaning to the phrase "riding Hurd"...  ;)

Question for one and all DRs and bk,

What was the first tv show, aside from children's programming you remember seeing  on television?

First TV show - on my fourth grade teachers brand new 3" TV - a Hopalong Cassidy movie.

Next exposure - the weekly telecast of Wrestling From Rainbow (all the scouts gathered together and the den Mom made pop corn)

First TV series - I Love Lucy

I remember seeing an episode of Dark Shadows on a neighbor's TV after school, but it seemed too scary to watch.

Now don't disrespect Fantasia.

I read she was out of Color Purple last night.  Is she performing on American Idol this week or something like that?

British music producer Jonathan Shalit and Sony/BMG are putting together a new music supergroup called BROADWAY 4 that will aim to do for Broadway classic songs what the group Il Divo has done for opera.

Shalit and Sony/BMG are seeking four men, age 20 to 35, sexy and charismatic with outstanding Broadway legit/pop voices for BROADWAY 4. Auditions have recently been held in London, and on Wednesday, June 6 an open audition will be held in New York, with agent submission auditions on June 7 and 8, and final callbacks June 11. The small group of singers chosen in New York will be flown to London to gather with the six London finalists. Those singers will then work with the group’s creative team, who will determine who will be the BROADWAY 4. An announcement will be made in late June.

Sony/BMG will release BROADWAY 4’s debut cd this fall internationally.

Well, after reading the recaps, I will erase the show without even watching.

Then you'll never hear Ryan use "bitch" in a sentence directed at Paula!

Good Afternoon!

Well... Now I'm about to head out... Just got caught up with some things here at the apartment.  Unfortunately, there were no sailors involved.

But before I go...

Question for one and all DRs and bk,

What was the first tv show, aside from children's programming you remember seeing  on television?

I can remember watching "The Carol Burnett Show" and "The Dean Martin Show" when we lived in Germany.  I was four years old when we moved there and about seven when we left.

Here's another way to pass the time that a friend of mine just forwarded to me:

What Was the #1 Song On the Day You Were Born?

DR Tomovoz - Alas, it only applies to the U.S. Billboard charts.

May 5, 1966 ... "Monday, Monday" by The Mamas & the Papas

DR JMK - I really like "The Lot" a lot too last night.  And I think the panel of judges is actually a pretty decent cross-section of talent too.

Okay, I missed something.  What is "The Lot" and what's it all about...Alfie??

I hope I didn't say too much in what was clearly a Spoliers Report on SVU!  If so, I'm really sorry.

I read what you had to say, DR Elmore, but it didn't spoil it in the least. And by the time I get to it tonight, I'll be too enveloped in the story to remember what you wrote, and it'll all seem fresh to me. No worries.

I began my afternoon with YOU ONLY LIVE TWICE, another in the series of Ultimate Edition James Bond remasters.

It looked and sounded spectacular. Not a speck or blemish to be seen, and the surround channels got a nice workout, especiall the .1 LFE channel which rumbled quite a bit throughout the movie.
