Well, you've read the notes, the notes were designed and run through, and now it is time for you to post until the designer cows come home.
-
And the word of the day is: WOODNOTE!
-
First post after BK!
-
Topic of the Day (in aproximate chronological order):
Star Wars
The Frisco Kid
Star Wars: Episode V - The Empire Strikes Back
Raiders of the Lost Ark
Blade Runner
Star Wars: Episode VI - Return of the Jedi
Witness
Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom
Star Wars: Episode VII - The Force Awakens
-
And now, to bed.
Have a good day, all!
-
Good morning, all.
Coffee!

First in the actual morning?

TOD
Dead Heat on a Merry-Go-Round
Luv
Zabriskie Point
The Possessed
The Star Wars Holiday Special
Ha ha, just kidding. Those first three, I never knew he was in. Maybe Zabriskie, I sort of remember looking for him in that one. Okay, here we go...
American Graffiti
The Conversation
Star Wars (first three, haven't seen the new one yet)
Raiders of the Lost Ark (first three, but especially Raiders)
Blade Runner
Witness
The Mosquito Coast
Frantic
Presumed Innocent
And then whatever. He is always enjoyable. But them's my favorites.
-
Good morning, all!
-
I got about 10 hours of sleep last night, I really needed it.
-
My day is wide open. I may go into City Center if Joshie needs help. I do need to go to Staples and photocopy some score paper for this Requiem and I do need to do laundry this weekend.
-
Yesterday's appointment went well and my doctor was happy: glucose content has decreased, blood sugar levels are down, and I've lost several more pounds. I left the doctor's around 900, walked to my pharmacy for my meds, then headed down to City Center. By 1:30, when I left there, I was ready for some sleep, but it was too bright in the apartment to sleep, so I puttered around the place until dinner like a zombie.
-
After dinner, I got ready for bed, read a bit of Franco Zeffirelli's autobiography, and turned off the lights around 9:00. Now, I need to wake up.
-
Outside of WITNESS, INDIANA JONES, and STAR WARS, I have no memory of seeing Harrison Ford in anything else.
-
Good morning

TOD: Working Girl and The Conversation

Today is the wonderful Sheldon Harnick's birthday. Thanks to BK's "Unsung Musicals" and "Lost In Boston" series, I've been lucky to score a number of songs he's written for FIORELLO, THE ROTHSCHILDS, FIDDLER ON THE ROOD, and IT'S A WONDERFUL LIFE.
Happy Birthday, Sheldon!

Happiest of birthdays to Mr. Harnick, and thanks to BK and DR Elmore for those wonderful albums.
Coincidentally, I only last week filled in the last missing two of those in my collection, and was enjoying some of their beautiful sounds.
On the Big Speakers.

Good morning, all.

Happy birthday, Sheldon Harnick.
I once had the privilege of interviewing him when he was doing a reading of his musical Dragons at the Egg in Albany.

Reading what others wrote, I realize how few Harrison Ford movies I've seen. "Working Girl" is my favorite. I love that movie. "Clear and Present Danger" and "Witness" were okay. I hated "Raiders of the Lost Ark."

This is wonderful news! Keep up the good work!

Watching an odd movie of Italian shorts called Love in the City. So far, the only love is the love a mother feels for her illegitimate child even though she's starving and can't get work and is about to abandon him. The other stories had to do with people who tried to commit suicide over failed love (Antonioni), interviews with prostitutes, horny people at a Sunday dance (Risi) and a man who likes to pray on women's desires to marry well and be taken care of (Fellini). In a word: depressing. Also fascinating if that's what these directors' images of love were less than 20 years after the war.

I didn't care for Raiders, either.

I enjoy Harrison Ford most of the time, but my two favorites are Witness and Blade Runner.

Two!

Laundry in the dryers, floors vacuumed, breakfast eaten, bed made, and i am ready for a nap.
I'm listening to Gounod's opera Romeo et Juliette. Some beautiful stuff in it, but i still think he composes with a pastry tube.
-
This has been my week for not finding scores.
A voice student at the high school asked me if I could help him find a vocal score to the WAR AND PEACE that the Metropolitan Opera has done. I've never known anything about it so I "presume" it's Prokofiev's and not some other WAR AND PEACE. The only thing to be found out there is the Russian full score in three volumes.

Is that the version where they live happily ever after? I saw some opera version of R+J with a happy ending. I hadn't read the program since I knew the plot, and when that happened, I was actually more horrified than happy for the young lovers.

I'm up, I'm up - another rough night of little sleep.

Saturday morning greetings! Richard and I are off to Oxford, OH, today to see the Miami University synchronized skating team. Their spring show has a Broadway theme.
-
We had a lovely time last night at our local arts center attending the opening reception for a quilting and fiber arts exhibit. Richard bought a wall hanging and I met a retired librarian who grew up here and got her master's in library science at The University of Michigan the year I was a freshman there. She graduated from Miami the same year as Richard and DR Elmore, but had attended the Catholic high school. We had a LOT to talk about!

Nope. They die. They live in Nicholas Nickleby.
The original ending of Ambroïse Thomas' opera Hamlet saw him crowned King of Denmark. The finale was revised to Shakespeare's ending for the London premiere and that's now the strandard comclusion to the opera.

Good evening!

The final crush is on!

Trying to get everything that sprang out of the suitcase when it was first opened, and now will not fit back in.
-
Everyone who has a flight tomorrow wanted to do their 24 hour check-in, and the ship's computer has been down this afternoon.
-
Panic on the deck!
-
Fortunately, my hotel is connected to the airport in Copenhagen, so I can hopefully check-in in person on Monday.

I suppose I had better go back and try again to get the suitcase to close WITH everything inside the bag!

LOL.
As an adult I think finding a good solution to their problem would be more educational.

I'm sure you did. Will you be seeing her again?

Okay, 9:06 p.m.
-
Almost had a serious problem tonight.
-
The little plastic throttle on my scooter lost one of the screws, and the other one had come dangeriously loose.
-
Fortunately, Ken had one of those Leatherman multi-tools. He wasn't comfortable just tightening the one screw without having a replacement for the other.
-
Trying to get everything that sprang out of the suitcase when it was first opened, and now will not fit back in.

11:00
Not too early. That is one part of packing I don't like, giving up the luggage the night before. Fortunately I always have a carry-on bag for my morning things.
-
So, he called down to the front desk to see if their maintenance department might hVe a small screw to replace the one.
-
That was all he was asking for, he was going to install it himself.
-
Fortunately, Ken had one of those Leatherman multi-tools. He wasn't comfortable just tightening the one screw without having a replacement for the other.
I suppose it is too crazy on the ship to find out if they have any screws that might fit. Keep a careful eye on your scooter. Is this yours or does it belong to the ship?
-
So, he called down to the front desk to see if their maintenance department might hVe a small screw to replace the one.
I should have waited to comment. I expect there is more to this story.
-
They came back with their company line, "We have been advised, that we are not allowed to touch or repair those scooters."
-
Ken flipped out and stormed down to the front desk, where he was given a small screw that actually fit.
-
Hello, everyone.
-
And the scooter is now repaired, at least, until I get home and get a real replacement.
-
I can see it's been a stressful time for some.
-
But what if Ken had not been with me? What if the other screw had fallen out?
-
So glad to hear the scooter has been repaired.
The front desk's answer fits right in with the sort of week I had. Gawd!
-
They wouldn't have helped me? They wouldn't have even come to my cabin?
-
I wonder if this is a common occurrence with this model scooter. Tom, you might want to check online once you get home and settled. It might be a simple matter of having a spare screw on hand or some other easy fix. Other scooter owners might be able to tell you more.
-
I would have spent the rest of my life in the stupid cabin, because they had been advised not to fix or repair it?
-
Ken flipped out and stormed down to the front desk, where he was given a small screw that actually fit.
;D
GOOD FOR KEN!!!!
-
They wouldn't have helped me? They wouldn't have even come to my cabin?
I hope you include this incident in your evaluation of the cruise.
-
And the scooter is now repaired, at least, until I get home and get a real replacement.
You have confirmed this is your scooter, which I had thought, that you are traveling with.
Where does it go on the plane?
-
But what if Ken had not been with me? What if the other screw had fallen out?
Exactly!
-
What if some elderly person, traveling alone, had the same problem?
-
How do you travel with the scooter? It's part of your luggage when you fly?
-
Yes, scary.
-
I am furious!
-
I guess Jane and I have some of the same questions.
-
It is a warning to you though to put together a kit to carry with you, even at home.
-
I don't blame you for being angry. Cruises carry lots of older folks, who often need a bit of extra help. And anyone can have an accident--or "incident"--where they need a bit of help. Their "It's not my job" attitude is inexcusable.
-
Happy Birthday, Sheldon Harnick!

They take the scooter at the door of the plane, and then put it down below for the flight. It is waiting for me (reassembled) when I get off the plane.
-
Trying to get everything that sprang out of the suitcase when it was first opened, and now will not fit back in.
I do know that problem! Have you noticed that dirty clothes take up more room than clean ones? Seriously. Maybe if we folded them like we do our clean ones they'd take less space.
-
I am soon off in the rain to a wedding and reception.....I will carry my new umbrella and I am wearing my $15 outfit.
WHAT?! Another splurge?! ;)
I'm sure you'll look quite spiffy in your new outfit.

Mercury retrograde until May 21, just so you know.....
With a couple other retrogrades thrown in, I'm told. I hope this past week isn't an indication of what's to come.
-

That sounds like a good deal. That's better customer service than I associate with the airlines.
-
You must pay extra for it, given the extra weight.
-
Ken flipped out and stormed down to the front desk, where he was given a small screw that actually fit.
Good for Ken!
-
Tom, I know this cruise has been filled with problems, but I've enjoyed hearing about it.
(That sounds rather strange.)
Let's try: I've enjoyed hearing about your cruise, even though there have been a number of difficulties.
-
I took a cruise like that once. NO END of problems. I learned toward the end of the week that the ship was being retired after this trip, so they had no incentive to fix anything. It was horrible. I had no idea it was such an old ship. Most of the passengers were angry about the way we were being treated, which must have made it hell for the crew, as well.
-
On other topics, DR Jennifer, I'm sorry I missed your birthday. I hope you had a most pleasant one!

I've been doing some cleaning and laundry today. More yet to do.

Some days, depending on who's working at Staples, a trip there can be a completely frustrating waste of time and energy. The dumbass running the Print Dept today made it a real joy.
-
It's act one of the Cinderella ballet, and the Center's wi-fi password still works! ;)
-
You must pay extra for it, given the extra weight.
Nope, no charge.
-
Hooray for Ken taking action!
-
I know it is stupid to dwell on a problem that didn't happen, but it still pisses me off.
-
I'm out in the lobby.
-
Bag is packed, placed in the hall, and I can't find a single thing that I forgot to pack!
-
I get to leave as soon as intermission is over...actually, I need to leave as quickly as I can. I need to print copies of the script, "Seven Ways To Get There," for the tech rehearsal this afterneoon. Even though I'll be running sound (I'm involved in ANOTHER show, BK!), I don't need to be there.
-
But I need to get them printed quickly because my family is getting together at either my parents' house or my sister's house...I don't think that it's been decided yet which house to go to. I'll call after dropping off the scripts.
-
Bag is packed, placed in the hall, and I can't find a single thing that I forgot to pack!
That's a good thing, right?

If I remember correctly, the current owners bought Bud Johansen's (sp?) School of Ballet when Bud retired and renamed it.

Well, it's almost intermission, so I have to go.
Until later!

Got another pot of loquat jam on the stove. This time with chiles in it.

Hello, John!

And there's enough for one more pot.

Ohhhh, today is Saturday.

I'm watching First Nudie Musical for the first time in too long. I'm laughing, as I knew I would, but I forgot how sweet it is, too.

Six!

I would love to see Brent in LA CAGE.

Hooray for Ken taking action!
And a double cheer.

What would I have done without him?

I wish I was flying home tomorrow.

Still, it will be fun to see Tivoli Gardens.

So, the frustrations after Staples hell continue. Joshie came by to look at the DVD situation, and he's stymied.
He thought it might be possible yo plug the DVD player into the cable box, but that failed, he's unsure about the analog-HDMI adaptor, and he needs to ask more attuned electronic friends. I think I'll call my friend Steve Heller on Monday and see if he can come check it out.
-
I do very much appreciate Joshie's taking a break from Encores! deadlines tyo come checkout the situation. i am so lucky to have such a wonderful friend.

Back from a music-only rehearsal that wasn't quite long enough, but we got through most of the stuff.

Much of this day has been like that. Tomorrow can only improve.
I did send Steve Heller a message on FB, and I hope he can stop by tomorrow or Monday. it would be nice to know the problem isn't the new DVD player.

Can someone please tell me when former dear reader Dan the Man because an ASS? Can someone just tell me that? After years of him being here and everyone, including yours truly, being super friendly and super supportive, he just waltzes on out because he discovers Facebook. There he lives and breathes. And he made the sublime error of getting snippy with me on one of those silly Broadway groups - I responded in my own way, but not too badly. One more word out of him and he will rue the day. The thread, BTW, is a guy who comes on there all the time to begin threads - but they're not really threads, they're links to his - wait for it - "blog." So, in essence, he's pimping out his blog, trying to get visitors and his stats up. In all my years on Facebook, I have exactly twice linked to these here notes - TWICE - and those instances were because someone I knew had died and I'd written a little tribute and wanted to share it. But this guy? Totally about click-throughs and visits - and his "thread"? What's your favorite overture from a musical - now, there has been the exact same thread about 100 times, maybe more.
-
It is almost midnight, so I guess I should go to bed.

No dear readers and no Guests.

Good night!

I printed the scripts and now I'll drop them off at the space, then it's off to my sister's for visiting with the family.
Be back later. :)

Dan's friendly on FB, but i once sent him over a year ago, maybe two years now, an email asking if he were oay and he was coming back to HHW. He never responded.

When he needed the site and its denizens they were always here for him. No one ever said a mean or unkind word to him, including me. I don't get it, I don't care to get it, but when he makes a snippy post in my direction, well...

I'm now completely convinced that the world's gone mad.
Yesterday I walked past a condo for sale with a ReMax sign. Curious, I went to the ReMax website, but nothing turned up from my searches. Today I phoned their local office. The woman who answered said I must have either the agent's name or the exact address, neither of which I knew. (The website asks for neither.) I asked if, like other real estate agencies, they put up a website for each listing. Answer: I don't know what the agents do. She then told me she doesn't have access to the MLS. Why even answer the phone if you can't provide any information? I'm sure I'm not the only person to drive by, see a FOR SALE sign, and wish to inquire. Most websites will let you see the current listings for a given area. Even a Google search turned up nothing. I would think that online information is the first thing you'd want to provide--even before putting the sign up. This was like talking to the janitor.

DR TCB I'm glad your son was able to help you.
When I am traveling, I often call down to the desk for a small screw - I don't get much a response either.....

The wedding was very nice. Some unusual music choices.....the bridal party walked on to the Theme from Superman.....
But all in all it was very well-planned and executed. There was a cash bar, and the one bartender didn't know what a gimlet was.....even after I told her.....so what I got was more like a double vodka with four limes..... I had to go get a glass of lemonade to spread the vodka out.....so one drink lasted me for the whole evening.
There was lots of dancing....fun....some nice toasts....fun....and I didn't catch the garter....so that was the best! It was nice to see old friends and just have a party and be at an event where I wasn't in CHARGE of anything!
-
I did wear my $15 outfit and it looked okay.....
-
On other topics, DR Jennifer, I'm sorry I missed your birthday. I hope you had a most pleasant one!
Thanks.

May 21.
Shit.

Someone needs to go have a conversation with Mercury because we're all a bit bored by the retrograde BS.
-
HELL'S BELLS! That's not till after Eliza Doolittle Day!

One more blessed damn MUSIC MAN performance tomorrow afternoon. I'll be having more than a Gimlet after.

DR Elmore:
I believe your player/TV compatibility issue derives from the insistence on the "industry" a few years ago to do away with the myriad connections players always had in favor of (I think) pretty much just HDMI connections. They called it "analog sunset" or some such, and I am not making that up. Like, let's just do away with all the connections that allowed people to connect to - literally - ANY kind of display - old TV, new TV, you name it.
I hope your friend can figure out the easiest solution to this.

I see vixmom on here, but she has not uttered a peep.
Granted, probably all we'd get if we could listen in would be the sound of snoring... :)
-
Watching Strike Me Pink with Eddie Cantor, Ethel Merman and a Harold Arlen score.
-
Good night, all.
-
Good morning
-
Well, at least, for me.
-
I am up, showered, and dressed.
-
Now I need to wait for another two hours to exit the ship.
-
I take that back. Another two and a half hours, since Ken opted for a 9:00 a.m. departure.
-
I did miss a couple of clothing articles before putting my suitcase out in the hall. They are now in my carry-on.
-
I'm home. My mom made some enchiladas (one with spinach and one with chicken). We also got a totally delish apple pie from San Francisco Street Bakery, which is just a few blocks from my sister's house.
-
After dinner, we played Phase 10. I lost...again.
-
Had a pretty wonderful stumble-through with only the slightest lyric flubs a couple of times - what a fun show and what a great cast.
-
After, Sami, her mom, and Doug and I went to eat - I had a Chinese chicken salad that was, for the first time, pretty lousy. The bagel was good, though.

From dear reader John G. on Amazon:
"In "The First Nudie Musical," writer-director Bruce Kimmel showed his love for a Hollywood that was disappearing back in the 1970s as his camera panned across several movie marquees and theaters. They were a symbol of the dreams just bursting out of an ingenue new to town and eager to see her name in lights. Some of those theaters might have been the homes for Patrick Bronstein's films. He's the title character of Kimmel's latest novel, "Patrick Bronstein Presents," and he's also someone who fondly remembers LA's former glory, both in terms of the movies and the city's culinary scene.
Bronstein, a minor character in Kimmel's Adriana Hoffstetter mystery series, takes the spotlight here. For all of his professional career, he's made movies only a step or two above the pornography that Kimmel spoofed in "Nudie Musical." His brand of schlock, from ersatz biblical epics to horror flicks with killer linoleum, makes him sound like a low-budget Roger Corman or William Castle. He was always out to make a buck. But little did he realize the effect that his films had on several generations of movie lovers. He finds that out when he meets a young journalist, who wants to write a biography of Bronstein. It's a setup as formulaic as Golan-Globus movie, but that's part of the book's easy-going charm. It takes you on a ride you may be comfortable with and then surprises you with its frequent belly laughs, its nostalgia and even the few tears it manages to coax. It's also a sturdy enough structure to let Kimmel pay homage to a city that doesn't respect its past any more than it has ever respected its residents. We go along to restaurants from a bygone era that still manage to satisfy loyal customers with good food and good service. We're also treated to a Valentine to a tried-and-true style of filmmaking that worked despite non-existent budgets and even a lack of talent in many departments.
There's a lot going on "Patrick Bronstein Presents," and Kimmel manages to serve it up in a way that leaves you happily satisfied. This review has focused largely on the nostalgic glow of its backward glances, but I can't emphasize enough that it's also laugh-out-loud funny, from the culture clashes to the bumpy tour of cinematic creations that Bronstein gave the world. It's a meal to savor long after you've finished it."

I'm not a fan of spinach, but it wasn't bad. My sister and niece really liked it.
