Well, you've read the notes, the notes were very fatherly, and now it is time for you to post until the cows come home - they're currently out looking for their fathers and their mudders.

DR Elmore.  Using "Tale" rather than Taylor and Kincaid or Kinkade + Babes in Toyland - a few interesting connections turn up  - even with Mr Bolger!

Good morning all!   I'm up and packed and will soon be making my way to the airport.  They recommend you leave here 3 hours before your flight to get to the airport and get through security in time.  So, I'll do that.  I figure I can always get something to eat at the airport and look in the shops....I still haven't found a Mickey Mouse cat toy...

Surprised how even a show far off in Williamstown, Mass. can inspire the vultures - after BD's injury, someone on another chat board decided to make the jump from a performance being cancelled to claiming the production had been stopped.

Safe flight DR Cillaliz

Thanks Tomovoz...perhaps I should have asked for Taxi vibes. First they aren't really taxis they are the limo guys who over charge you. But that's your only choice if you are leaving the Marriott ...well or a shuttle...turns out the driver I had must not have been able to read the sign that said "Road construction two way traffic" so we went the wrong way with a double yellow line for awhile.  The oncoming traffic was nice enough to stop, although the guy we cut off getting back in our lane did chase us for awhile, but I'm here at the airport, so all is well.

I was surprised how quiet the airport is.  I thought there would be more people returning home from vacation this morning. But that's cool, there was no line at security and it appears I'm on a free wifi, so all is well

DR JEANNE -

Yes we are in a Mercury retrograde until July 9.

Those previous problems you mentioned were because of a Jupiter retrograde, which we are also experiencing until July 31.

While people speak of  Mercury Retrograde periods that screw up computers and television sets, today's astrologers believe the mishaps happen in more personal realms (Uranus is the planet that rules television and computers).  Mercury rules communication, but more  informal communications, like writing, speaking, short shopping sprees and other erranding endeavors.  So, while Mercury is Retrograde, don't give that party,  be extra aware of what you say and what you interpret when chatting with or writing to friends, cut back on errands, expect that the check will be in the mail longer than usual.   Since the car is usually used for shopping and errands,  don't be surprised if the battery wire loosens or the fan belt snaps just when you have rush out for that one ingredient you forgot to buy.

The good things to do when Mercury is Retrograde: meditate, contemplate, edit the book/poem/song/essay you've been writing, clean house, talk to your pet, listen to music, paint, catch up on sleep!

Father's Day greetings!  I was out at my mom's yesterday afternoon and evening, enjoying my relatives who are visiting from 3 different states.  This morning, I'm going to do some prep for a Father's Day dinner for DH Richard and then go out to Mom's until my sister and her husband leave for Michigan.  My niece, who's stayed at our house the past 2 nights, isn't going back to Illinois until tomorrow, so she'll stay with Gram tonight.

DR td, I do not know the Eric Larsen book, although I loved DEVIL IN THE WHITE CITY. I know of Dr Crippen because of the Act One finale of ONE TOUCH OF VENUS, "Here's to Dr Crippin, Hawley Harvey Crippin, lying in a felon's grave . . ." and the British musical BELLE, in which Dr Crippen's pathetic music hall wife Belle Elmore(???) is sung so wonderfully off-key by Rose Hill.

And so, to Toyland.

Good Morning!

I'm up, I'm up... And I guess I should be running around the Reservoir right now, but I'm not.  Which is OK.  It took me a while to fall asleep last night - there was a lot of noise out on the street, and I don't think I really fell asleep until around 4:00am.  Of course, the original plan was to get up around 8:30am and then head to the Park, but two laps around the Reservoir after just four and a half hours of sleep... I don't think so.  In any case, depending just how hot and humid it gets today, I may go for a run once I get back from the matinee.

Very sorry to read about Thommie Walsh, but thank you for the information and the heartfelt tribute, DR Jose.

I met him in NYC when some of the original ACL members had a book signing for ON THE LINE, and I got his autograph. Didn't have time to stand and talk as I would have liked, but he was certainly charming and seemed pleased (as did the others) that so many people wanted autographed coipies of the book.

I received this from Baayork Lee last night, and I don't think she would mind me sharing it with all of you here on this wonderful site.  It made me cry a little as well as smile.

Quote

Dear Friends,
Our Thommie took his journey into the light today, Saturday at 2:35 PM. I was there to represent all of you that loved him. He smiled when I arrived and proceed to try to talk to me. I knew he was waiting for me, as my train was late. I reminded him of our pact that I would be there to help him go into the light and he smiled again.  We breathed together, and I talked to him for about 10 mins till he took his last breath. I continued to talk to him for 45 mins, so his transitions would be smooth.
Barbara and Ellie are coping with their loss and Barbara is busy making plans for the celebration of Thommie's life.
I will continue to write you to let you know what Barbara has planned.
in loving spirit,
baayork

BK:

Need to make a correction in your notes

Yearbook: The High School Musical is issued by Dramatic Publishing and not Samuel French

Created by Michael Michetti. Musical Coordinator Glenn Mehrbach. Book by Darcy Rice. Music and lyrics by:D.Bergen,C.Bloom,J.Covell,Babbie Green,Bruce Kimmel,Glenn Merbach,Michael Michetti,David Pomeranz,Irv Rubinsky,Russelle,M.Savage,H.Schock,B.Shucker
Cast: 8m., 14w. Yearbook is a new musical about high school students today. Based on interviews with nearly 100 students, Yearbook presents, through scenes and songs, a year in the life of a group of high school students in the '90s. Incorporating both comedy and drama, the portrait of contemporary youth that emerges is a realistic, yet ultimately positive, look at today's teenagers. The score for Yearbook includes contributions from a dozen composers and lyricists with extensive credits in popular music, musical theatre, film and television. Consequently, the score reflects an exciting range of musical styles, from musical theatre to alternative rock. Staging for Yearbook can be as simple or complex as you choose, and the cast size can be reduced to as few as 18 or increased with a large chorus to include as many performers as you'd like. There are some non-singing roles. This fresh joyous musical celebration was performed at the International Thespian Festival to great acclaim. Flexible staging.

I guess it was because it was the first show I ever saw on Broadway, that I still remember so much about seeing HELLO, DOLLY!.   I remember that it was at the St. James Theatre, I remember every number and set, and, most of all, I remember Pearlie Mae's third act, after the Curtain Call; when she came out and entertained the audience with stories and songs for almost a half hour.  Wow, what a night!

So, what live performance (play, musical, concert, ice capade) do you remember, above all others?  For any reason:  The Best, The Worst, The Most Unusual?

I wanted to add one thing to the various posts about ACL and Thommie Walsh.

Thommie would (I think) be the 4th of the original cast members to die.  Back around 1993 or so, we lost a very dear and close friend of our's here in Phoenix.  His name was Rick Mason, and he was not only in the original cast, but also did all of the original "workshop sessions" that created the characters for the book.  His registered "Equity name" was Cameron Mason.

He was a sweet, very funny, multi-talented, caring and warm guy, and his death was devastating to Kerry and I.  He truly had become like a brother to us.  Rick was also partners with Clive (from the orig. ACL cast) for a few years, but they had ended their relationship but remained friends.

Ironically, when I got to know our fearless Grande Mensch here at HHW, I was surprised that he also had known Rick Mason, and in fact I think Rick had gotten him tickets to the original run of ACL in New York.  Small world!

Well, my dears, today was Clean Out the Basement Day. Marvelous Matt came by WITH HIS TRUCK and we spent several hours tossing stuff out. I needed Matt here because there was a lot of stuff that I wasn't sure should be kept. There's stuff that looks familiar and I KNOW I saved it for a reason, but I can't for the life of me remember what it is. And, of course, the "What the hell is this?" category. Matt filled his truck and did a dump run.

I really do toss things from time to time--not that you'd know it. Cull, cull, cull!! Keep less! I'm sure DR JOSE can relate to this.

Next, I watched the last special feature on the DAYS OF GLORY DVD. This was an eight minute animated short subject made by the director of this film, and it shared a common theme with the main feature: that is, the disavowed role the North Africans played in the winning of World War II. These worthy patriots were not paid their due salaries by the government for fighting and winning the war. In fact, as of this date, the various French party in power has found ways to put off paying the reparations to the families of these valiant men.

Rick Mason was not only my friend back then, but I gave him what was either his first job or close to it here in LA.  He was in the third production of my show Start At The Top, at the old Stage Society Theatre on Melrose (at Doheny - it later became the screening room of the Writer's Guild).  Also in that cast was another newcomer, Eric Michael Gillette.

In any case, I've told the story before, but I was in NY briefly in September of 1975 to preview The First Nudie Musical (previewing with Love and Death - where I can't remember but somewhere in mid-town).  I was up and just walking around the theater district and found myself in Shubert Alley and there was Rick walking to the stage door of the Shubert.  We chatted and he asked if I wanted a house seat to the following day's Wednesday matinee (we were previewing Wednesday night) - since I had the time to kill, I naturally said yes.  So, he got me a fifth row aisle seat.  The minute the house lights went down and I heard the opening piano notes and then "Again" and the lights came up, I had a lump in my throat the size of Brooklyn and it didn't go away for the entire show.  I laughed, I cried, I cheered.  Nobody was ever better than Rick as Mark - he just had that innocence and sweetness, plus he was a GREAT dancer - one of the best in the company.  We had a brief conversation after the show, and, sadly, the next time I saw the show on Broadway, he'd already left the cast.

My first Broadway show was laso at the St James theatre, I saw 1776.  The local public library had organized a trip and I immediatley signed up.  When I arrived I discovered that all the other attendees were sr citizen ladies, I was probably 14

But I had such a wonderful time that I contiue signed up for the trips and got to attend several wonderful shows at the Shakespeare festival at Stratford CT

We had front row mezzanine seats and the ladies  discovering it was my first show, graciously made sure I had the absolutes center seat

I fell absolutely in love with the show, laughing during Sit Down John, crying my eyes out during Mama Look Sharp and singing He Plays the Violin  on my way out of the theatre....

When we got back to the library I immediately checked out their copy of the OCR album

A few years later When my college decided to run the show during all of July in 1976 I was shoicked that I was the only one of tghe crew and cast who was at all familiar with the show

Good afternoon studlies and lovelies, and H/Ks and DRs, and daddies and mothers (and muthahs), et al, ad libitum.....

I have (what is to me) a very exciting tidbit to pass along about what sounds like a fabulous new show coming up.  (That is one fabulous).

At the Friday night event that I attended, Leslie Jordan took a moment at the end of the evening to tell everyone about a pilot that he had shot, and that HBO is picking up and is supposed to start airing around January of 2008.

The very barest of a description is that it is about a man and woman who work together, are very high-end real estate agents, are very well off themselves, and the locale is a very upscale neighborhood of the Dallas-Ft. Worth area.

But the best part are the 2 stars ---- Leslie Jordan and Lily Tomlin.  And the production company is the "Bloodworth-Thomason" team.  It sounds like it could be really good.  :)

Michael S - I'm confused about your statistic about CHORUS LINE being the last Broadway credit for a majority of the cast.  Do you mean the a majority of the original cast?  And if so, do you mean including the people who played the dancers who were cut before the line was formed?

Let me try again.

I was looking at the cast list of the original performers from A Chorus Line and I found it interesting that a majority of the performers who appeared on opening night of A Chorus Line that this show was either there one and only Broadway credit or that it was there last Broadway credit after several shows. (Some did just one more show)

Some where able to go on to do many other shows.
Donna McKechnie, Kelly (Carol) Bishop, Priscilla Lopez, Michel Stuart, Thommie Walsh, Robert LuPone, Pamela Blair

I had to go through a bunch of unlabeled CDRs, and boy did I hit the mother lode - I found the two CDRs of all the Goodbye Mr. Chips demos from the various scores before Leslie Bricusse ended up doing it.  I know some of it's Previn, and there's a few Rod McKuen songs, as well as some Tony Hatch - I'm not sure if there's any other composers represented - I'm trying to get a track list because like an idiot I didn't write anything down when I made the CDRs - as I said, they were unlabeled, but I knew I had them and boy what a find.

I also found a really nice soundtrack, but I have no idea what film it's from or who the composer is, other than it's slightly Herrmannesque - it's got to be from the last twenty years or so, judging by the sound and recording.

I also found a CDR of a favorite LP of mine (which I no longer have) - the French singer Mirielle Matthieu singing Morricone music.  What a nice haul today.  Oh, and I found a DAT of a George S. Clinton unreleased score to the film Mother's Boys - it's really quite good, so I transfered that.

The limited edition FSM soundtrack of Goodbye, Mr. Chips is three CDs and no, it doesn't contain any of these demos by other composers.  My favorite of all of the demos is the gorgeous title song by Tony Hatch.  Several of these demos are fully-orchestrated, including the Hatch numbers.

When I moved into my new apartment in December of last year, I requested a colbalt blue accent wall.  However, since I have settled in, I have tried and tried to find something to hang on this wall that wouldn't end up disappearing into the blue.

Today,  my sister found this item, which is not as large as I would have liked; but it will probably have to do for now.

Michael S - Among the originals that were not cut in the opening scene, besides the ones you mentioned, Wayne Cilento and Baayork Lee went on to have really great careers behind the scenes.  So if it's OK to add those two to the seven you listed, that's 9 people who went on to pretty darn good work, probably propelled by being original CHORUS LINE cast members.

When I think of Annie & my first Broadway experience I remember my mother.  It was spring of ’69, I was pregnant with Craig & my parents visited us in New Jersey.  I had heard how delightful Annie was, people seemed to find it uplifting.  As we left the theater my mother looked at me & said “It was very sad”.  I expect my expression mirrored hers.  I can’t tell you who played Annie.

My next Broadway experience wasn’t until I saw Wicked, which I LOVED!

I'm back, after another full day of visiting with relatives.  On my way home from my mother's, I picked up my mother-in-law to join us for Father's Day dinner.  Richard just left to take her home.

TCB's TOD - My first visit to New York was 40 years ago this week, with my mother.  She worked at a Detroit bank with a woman whose brother had a connection to Lotte Lenya.  We had 4th row center house seats for Cabaret, original cast, at the Imperial Theatre.  When the show was over, we went out a side door and ended up right by the stage door.  I still have the souvenir program, autographed by 4 of the 5 leads (all but Jill Haworth).  Also, while we were standing there, Mary Martin and Robert Preston came out of their I Do, I Do stage door, got into a limo, and zoomed away.  I can still see MM waving out the back window.

A sad thing really.  If the man really has talent and not just a good voice, he would be nowhere near ready to cut an album of arias etc.

Remember he was judged by non-professionals in his field and a had manipulated audience. The record company is after a quick buck rather than nurturing talent.  I wish him well.

Far better singers (Operatunity in the UK) have gone down the road with more support and have great difficulty in keeping that dream alive.

I hope his moment(s) in the sun sustain him and he doesn't have a life full of let downs.

I so hope Mr Potts has a lot of emotional support from his family and friends.

Truthfully - I thought the audience responded to the Puccini and not the voice!

I enjoyed Father’s Day.  We had nice chats with Craig & Bryan.  They both had work to do in the afternoon, Craig a study group and Bryan a practice MCAT exam.

Sherlock had fun at the dog park playing with a couple of beautiful chocolate labs.  We enjoyed talking to their parents & exchanged phone numbers with them.  A few minutes before we left a woman arrived with her two year old Bernese Mountain Dog we had never seen in town before.

Then we went downtown and ate at one of the dog friendly outdoor restaurants, just across from the mini stage where a friend of ours was performing with her band.

Walking around with Sherlock we meet very interesting people, sometimes good interesting, and sometimes strange interesting.  Today we met a lovely couple celebrating their 48th anniversary.

First Broadway show for me:

Feb or March, 1961....WILDCAT.....in NYC for a day with my uncle who took me for my birthday....about six months early to see LUCY!!!!!

I was ten, and the man behind me had to keep pushing me down by my shoulders because I would stand up every time Lucy came onstage.

I still remember her pushing an old jalopy onstage and singing to her sister....and beating a big drum and singing "Hey Look Me Over!!"

Next Broadway show:

May, 1985 - A CHORUS LINE at the Shubert Theater.

I saw Sandy Duncan do PETER PAN five times.  I was living in New Jersey at the time, and everyone who came to visit wanted to see PETER PAN and ANNIE.  Of course, at the time, we only had the rare TV appearance of the Mary Martin version, so it was pretty exciting to see it done live at the Lunt-Fontaine.

Each time I saw the show, I would hang around and watch Sandy at the stage door. She was incredible with each and every person who wanted her autograph.  I think she is a delight.

Jane, I am surprised to read that you didn't enjoy ANNIE.  I saw each and every Annie, from Andrea McArdle thru Sarah Jessica Parker.  I thought it was a marvelous Broadway show, but I hated the movie.

Can you tell me who I saw in the show?

It is a sad story and only Annie & Sandy really have a happy ending.  We didn't dislike the show, we did expect to feel good when we left the theater.

They wouldn't have let him past the first auditions of Idol, because he was singing opera.  Simon doesn't even go for Broadway.  However, if he was on America's Got Talent (the British cousin) I think he might have done very well.  Last year they had a yodelling teenager who made it all the way to the finals.

I went to my first Broadway play after I won a contest that the Atlanta Symphony Orchestra sponsored. They had a bunch of publicity shots of guest artists they'd had over the years and I identified them all correctly and won a trip to see the ASO at Carnegie Hall.

My ex and I went, and although I couldn't afford it, I bought tickets to see Big River, since I liked Roger Miller when I was young.

First real Broadway show that I really, really loved: Bill Irwin's FOOL MOON.

My first Broadway bound show was ANNIE at the Kennedy Center in DC. It was the same night Roslyn Carter went to see it. our group was in the very back row of the top balcony and I loved it.  The first Broadway show I saw was THE WIZ a couple days later - it was a church trip where we studied apartheid in South Africa in DC and at the U.N.   Then I went on an AIFS trip to London that summer and the first show I saw there was A CHORUS LINE. That was all in 1977. I saw A CHORUS LINE on another school trip in New York in 1978.  I don't know if I saw any of the men mentioned.  I do know I saw Priscilla Lopez.  It's a name I remember

"Sittin' pretty....Thaaat's Riiight."

What was the theme to the show about garbage men? Just music, right? Great stuff.

The voice of "Sittin' Pretty" sounded like the Dr. John-esque "Love that Chicken From Popeye's" voice from commercials.

I began my evening of viewing with THE BONE COLLECTOR, and it's a crackerjack forensics/mystery story. Great cast, too: Denzel Washington, Angelina Jolie, Ed O'Neil, Queen Latifah, John Benhamin Hickey, Luis Guzman, Michael Rooker, Bobby Canavalle. No, I didn't guess the identity of the murderer. I probably would need to watch it again to see if there were any clues planted to lead us to him. It was someone I didn't suspect at all.

Side A. Very few of us ever bother playing side B so it's not necessary.

If you do have a couple of holes there and can use them on both sides, make sure they match up.

Good Evening!

Back from my matinee of A Chorus Line.  There are still a few spots where I'm second-guessing myself, but since this was just my second show playing the Key 3 part, I guess that's not bad.  -I'm just still not used to having a string part in the pit, so when I see some of the notes on the page, I keep thinking to myself, "Really?  I don't remember that from last time?"  In any case... I wasn't fired, so... ;)

I did get some practice time in before the show on the Key 3 book, and I think it's going to take me a few more days to get that under my fingers.  The guitar patch is a bit "touchy" - literally.  For myself, I have to play it counter-intuitively.  And then to coordinate the Wah-Wah foot pedal... Well... Practice, practice, practice.

It's A Plane!  It's Superman! at the York.  What a fun show!  And they assembled a great cast led by Cheyenne Jackson, David Rasche, Jean Louisa Kelly, Shoshana Bean, and Lea DeLaria (as Dr. Abner Sedgwick - it worked for me).  With a special cameo by Mr. Charles Strouse, himself, as Perry White.

And I ended up sitting next to Joanne Worley too!  -And there were a lot of other "Broadway Babies" who were there tonight after the Sunday matinees.  -And before they headed off to the midnight "showing" of "Broadway Bares".

As for the first Broadway show I ever saw...

Well, the first "show-show" I remember seeing was one of the tours of Fiddler on the Roof at the Warner Theatre in DC.  I forget who was playing Tevye.

The other "show-show" that sticks in my head is Ibsen's Ghosts at the Kennedy Center's Eisenhower Theatre.  It stared Liv Ullman, with John Neville Andrews and Kevin Spacey(!).

First Broadway show on Broadway - high school trip.  Three shows back-to-back... Brighton Beach Memoirs Tuesday night; Biloxi Blues Wednesday afternoon (it was in previews - very cool seeing the two shows back to back); and The Tap Dance Kid  (the very young, at the time, Alfonso Ribiero was out at that performance).

*And I'm still sort of miffed that my school-mates did not want to see Sunday in the Park with George instead.  -Although, when we came out of The Tap Dance Kid, I think a bunch of them had wished they chose something else.  ;)

Today, I saw "Take Me Out."  It was a pretty good production of a wonderful show.  The lead actor's main problem was not his acting, but that he couldn't just stand still and talk.  He kept moving and that got annoying, but otherwise the rest of the cast was quite good.  The lead character's best friend, who is supposed to be played by a black man, was not played by a black man.  I don't know if they had someone and he left or if they were able to find someone appropriate to play the part, at all.  Anyway, the director (who is not black) played the role...and they didn't change any lines.  I went in knowing that, and I don't think that it would worked (or been legal ::)) to have rewritten the lines to make the character not be a black man.  Otherwise, the nudity was quite unobtrusive and if anyone went to the show just to see naked men, they would be somewhat disappointed.
