I hope all California DRs vote, or voted, yes on Prop 2 to ease the suffering of farm animals.

Much like Happy Days, I would rather be chained to the top of the Empire State Building while vultures circle my lifeless body and begin pecking at my flesh than sit through even the credits for Zack and Miri Make a Porno

Not a Kevin Smith fan, Ben?  Or not a fan of Pittsburgh?
I've never actually seen a Kevin Smith film, but this one, more than DOGMA has piqued my interest.
Mr. Smith premiered it here earlier this week to a sell-out crowd with a Q&A following.
I haven't read the reviews, or seen any to read, yet.
But, it has piqued my interest.

I hope all California DRs vote, or voted, yes on Prop 2 to ease the suffering of farm animals.

Not a very popular proposition for folks who want to discourage Big Brother control of private enterprise.

It's passage would also cause a significant rise in some food costs, like eggs. The CA producers have already said they will abandon the state for Nevada - thus easing the cost of eggs in CA and adding a big cloud of carbon exhaust shipping the product across state lines.

The hens might be happier, but poor children will have poorer diets.

I came back to the office to fine the strangest of all Amazon packages.  In the first one I opened, there was the Truman Capote's A CHRISTMAS MEMORY DVD I mentioned the other day.  But it looks like a bootleg that you would buy at a flea market--plain see-through case with no artwork--just a plain printed label with a barcode.  The DVD is the same with a very generically printed label.  I take more time making labels on my home-made DVDs.  I'm not holding out much hope for the overall viewing quality of this DVD.

This DVD is in black-and-white, yes?  I'd read that ABC could not locate a color master print and that all they had was a black-and-white.  I could have sworn I had this in color on VHS tape at some point, but I may very well be mistaken.

Oh, man--yeah, I just watched the beginning--it's in black and white and it's full of spots and scratches.  It's worse that my home made copy!

Can this order get any worse?  I'm afraid to open the Dave Brubeck CD that was the third item in it.  I wonder what can be wrong with that?

It's actually performed by Kenny G.

I just feel the cruelty to the animals is horrible & inhumane, not just for the chickens but for all the animals.  It seems there are plenty of successful “free range” egg producers, at least in Oregon.  I feel sad the current economic situation will be the reason for the defeat of this proposition.

But how much to a dozen eggs cost at the market?

And I assure you the food manufacturers are not using free range eggs.

It is not "the current economic situation" it is the on-going demands of the free market place - most consumers have more concern for their pocket book than for a hen's comfort.

Also consider, if CA passed Prop2, there would not be significantly fewer caged up hens - they would just be cooped-up somewhere out of reach of the CA activists - many probably in Mexico.

As we tighten the ropes on our domestic food producers, we encourage the import of more food from China - and we know how well that's worked out!

I think the current situation contributed to the Humane Society not raising enough funds to fight this.  The theory is, if one state passes the law, others will follow.

If I had more willpower I would avoid all eggs I don't know where they came from.  Alas I do not have that kind of strength.

The theory is, if one state passes the law, others will follow.

LATIMES
Quote

...
The Humane Society of America, which is sponsoring Proposition 2, argues that if Californians pass it, other states will follow. As much as we support the decent treatment of animals, we doubt that passage of the measure would start a national trend. In fact, we fear that it would have an unintended consequence: Because it only regulates eggs produced in California and not eggs that are sold here, it would likely bolster the market for cheaper out-of-state eggs produced where farmers have no similar bans on cages.

According to a University of California Agricultural Issues Center report, cage-free eggs are about 20% more expensive to produce and cost about 25% more to buy. There is a growing demand, but it is still small -- about 5% of all eggs nationally are produced by cage-free hens. So California eggs would become more expensive, and many consumers would simply buy the cheaper eggs laid by hens living in cramped conditions in neighboring states or in Mexico. As a result, we fear the result of Proposition 2's passage would not be better treatment of hens but merely the export of their mistreatment. We recommend a no vote.
...

Pass Prop 2 and every Denny's and IHOP on the left coast will serve Mexican eggs.

We just gave Sherlock two Benadrly.  I hope it helps with whatever is going on.  He seems to be having a reaction to something.  There are little bumps around his lips & on his snout.  He has been licking his paws & scratched his snout so much it is bleeding in several places.  One had pus coming out of it.  We put booties on his back paws so he can't scratch.

The entire vet office went to the Halloween parade this afternoon.  I told Keith we should go & find the vet to look at him.  I wanted to see the parade, & I have the vet's cell number.

Back to what we are doing instead, cleaning-oh joy.

Since there is no broadcast of LIFE this evening, I think I will watch the silent version ofTHE CAT AND THE CANARY and SHAUN OF THE DEAD for Halloween. I'm becoming rather apatheticto GHOST WHISPERER, so I won't be fraught if I miss it.

Steve and I had a very nice day at Tysons I & II. Steve shopped, and gave the thumbs down or up in regards to his apparel selections. Lunch was at Gordon-Biersch - love those Garlic Fries! And that about sums up my day so far.

It has been decided. We will go to Long Island (Anthony's parents) for Thanksgiving, probably leaving sometime Wednesday the 26th or if we want to spend extra time, Tuesday evening the 25th.

We then have to return on Sunday November 30th because we begin our annual Volunteer work on Monday, December 1st.

Stephen J. Falat Basket Project

If you're in New York City at that time and have some time to help, please let me know (send me a PM) and I'll give you more specific information. We need all the bodies we can muster to pack over 2,300 gift bags for people with AIDS. The bags go to many different ASOs (AIDS Service Organizations) to provide holiday gifts to people who have little or nothing.

We especially need people on Monday, December 1st. It's the day we set up the packing rooms and unload the deliveries so the more people we have helping the quicker we can unload the truck(s). It's a long day with lots of work but the work is worth it.

I will say it again, Ben; God has a special place in heaven for people like you.

Cilla, I did hear that the new Titanic book was due, and I saw it the other day at Costco, but it is a bit out of my budget, so I will put a hold in at Jed's library.

It is very nice when you have the private phone number of your vet.  We gave Sherlock 3 more Benadryl & will call the vet back in a couple of hours.  She may meet us tonight or in the morning, or just call in a prescription for prednisone.  If we are lucky he will begin to improve within the next two hours.  That doesn't seem like much to me, but the pharmacies close early here.

My new MSI Wind arrived today and I'm using it right now.  I love this little thing!  I'm still getting used to the keyboard. It's close to full size but not quite.  This will be perfect for travel, taking to work - etc. I could even take this to court very easily.  It's just too cool

TOD:
DVD:
This week, like BK, I watched a Paul Newman movie which I had never seen: POCKET MONEY co-starring Lee Marvin.  It's a meandering tale of Mexico which I found to be strange in a good way.
Again, like BK, I watched a movie featuring Joanna Pettet, the 1967 spy spoof CASINO ROYALE.  Though not cohesive, what with five directors, a film which I find vastly entertaining and star-studded to the max.  I'm especially fond of Pettet, Deborah Kerr, Orson Welles, Ursula Andress and David Niven.  I think that Terrence Cooper should have had a bigger career.

ITunes (CD):
WICKED - 5th Anniversary Edition
JEEPERS CREEPERS
A HAPPENING IN CENTRAL PARK - Barbra (for "Marty the Martian")
HUSH, HUSH SWEET CHARLOTTE - OST

READING MATERIAL:
BY THE SWORD - F. Paul Wilson's latest Repaiman Jack novel
THE LEGS ARE THE LAST TO GO - Diahann Carroll's tell-all latest autobiography.
