Yesterday, I went to Seattle to see The Drowsy Chaperone at the 5th Avenue Theatre.  I loved it!  It was quite well done AND Georgia Engel played Mrs. Tottendale, as she did in the Broadway production!  She and the rest of the cast were all very good.  I brought my numbered (#581 of 1000), limited (yea, right) edition vinyl cast album, but we saw a matinée and there was no one at the stage door (that I could see down the alley), so I didn't try to get Georgia's (or anyone else's) autograph.  I did buy a baseball cap and the Broadway production souvenir program...they were both half price. ;D   But it was a lot of fun!

I just saw The Boys in the Band for the first time this past weekend.  [I had read the play many times].  I agree with bk that it was very well done.

Angels in America - the original NY production AND the HBO adaptation.

I went to see a play yesterday, too: "Greetings”, by Tom Dudzick. It was directed by my step-brother at a community theatre in the mountains where my Dad's new family lives. I think I missed something in the plot, (maybe I fell alseep?) but there were several good performances and he did a nice job with directing, designing the set, doing the lighting and audio and dealing with having to replace a lead actor because he still wasn't off-book a week before opening!

"What was the first gay-themed show or film you saw?"

Tea and Sympathy (not really "gay themed" but did address the issue boldly for it's time 1956)

Oh lucky you! We missed Georgia Engle by three days! However, due to a timely email from Jose we were able to snag row three center orchestra seats - and the rest of the original cast was still there... we loved this show!

JRand: In answer to your question last night; no, we've never been in a show together. I'm from Indiana originally, but lived in Florida from '92 - 2006, when I moved back to the greater Indy area. Daddy's Dyin'...is my first show since I've been back.

RE: Fox59. I wound up not even being able to go. A back spasm woke me up at 3 a.m. and even moving - let alone driving and performing - was difficult and painful. (I'm better now, after much application of ice and 800 mg. of Ibuprofen). I called my director and told him that I couldn't be there this morning, but I will be there for rehearsal tonight come hell or high water. He was very understanding.

Then I settled on the sofa with my ice pack to watch for the Spotlight Theatre feature. And I waited. And waited. They told everybody to be there by 6 a.m. sharp. Finally, at 6:55, they did their live bit at the theater...and out of a cast of eight, three people had shown up! They had to do a completely different scene than the one they'd planned - on book, yet! - and you could tell they were really nervous...the scene was simply not good. This was a scene they'd done in rehearsal totally on point...performance level. I felt so, so, so bad for not gritting my teeth and going anyway, though honestly I think that would've been impossible at the time. I also don't know if it would've made any difference, since we still would've been missing half the cast.

Yikes. I can't help but wonder if it's really true that there's "no such thing as bad publicity." I hope so. This is going to be a really good show - you can tell from the rehearsals - but the "pr" didn't reflect that. At all. Total bummer.

BK, I totally agree with you on those Laurent Borzeau docus. I rarely enjoy any new "making of" docus, as they're either a repetitive, pseudo-intellectual snoozefest (a la Borzeau) or shallow soundbytes about what a "genius" everyone is, how they always knew they were "making a classic," so-and-so is "a beautiful human being and one of the great artists of all time," etc. F'rinstance, I love Jaws, but the "making of" on the DVD is completely useless as far as I'm concerned. Oh, yeah, Steven Spielberg just LOVED his editor, Verna Fields. They got along SWIMMINGLY. They devote like two minutes to the problems on the film (which were legendary), and the rest of the time to everybody brown-nosing each other in absentia, 30 years after the movie wrapped. zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz...

The older "making ofs" are sooooooo much better. They really delved in there behind the scenes and showed them filming stunts, arguing, etc. You actually got a look at them - gasp - making the movie. Which is what I want to see, not schmoozing I could watch on Leno or Letterman if I so chose. Remember the "behind the scenes" specials on Star Wars and Raiders of the Lost Ark that aired on network TV when the movies were first released? Compare those to the new "docus" on their respective DVDs. The gap in quality is stunning.

At least in my humble opinion.

Rant over.

Origin of the Names of the Months
January: Janus, Roman god of doors, beginnings, sunset and sunrise, had one face looking forward and one backward,
February: On February 15 the Romans celebrated the festival of forgiveness for sins; (februare, Latin to purify),
March: Mars, the Roman god of war,
April: Roman month Aprilis, perhaps derived from aperire, (Latin to open, as in opening buds and blossoms) or perhaps from Aphrodite, original Greek name of Venus,
May: Maia, Roman goddess, mother of Mercury by Jupiter and daughter of Atlas,
June: Juno, chief Roman goddess,
July: Renamed for Julius Caesar in 44 BC, who was born this month; Quintilis, Latin for fifth month, was the former name (the Roman year began in March rather than January),
August: Formerly Sextilis (sixth month in the Roman calendar); re-named in 8 BC for Augustus Caesar,
September: September, (septem, Latin for 7) the seventh month in the Julian or Roman calendar, established in the reign of Julius Caesar,
October: Eighth month (octo, Latin for 8) in the Julian (Roman) calendar. The Gregorian calendar instituted by Pope Gregory XIII established January as the first month of the year,
November: Ninth Roman month (novem, Latin for 9). Catholic countries adopted the Gregorian calendar in 1582, skipping 10 days that October, correcting for too many leap years,
December: Julian (Roman) year's tenth month (decem, Latin for 10).

This calendar was proposed during the French Revolution, and used by the French government for about twelve years from late 1793. There were twelve months of 30 days each, grouped into three ten-day weeks called décades. The five or six extra days needed to approximate the tropical year were placed after the months at the end of each year. A period of four years ending on a leap day was to be called a Franciade. It began at the autumn equinox:

Autumn:
Vendémiaire
Brumaire
Frimaire

Winter:
Nivôse
Pluviôse
Ventôse

Spring:
Germinal
Floréal
Prairial

Summer:
Messidor
Thermidor
Fructidor
