Title: NACHO NOTES
Post by: bk on September 21, 2010, 01:20:32 AM
Well, you've read the notes, the notes were bloated and filled with guacamole, and now it is time for you to post until the cows come home - they're currently feeling bloated having eaten their own late-night nachos.

Yesterday the butterfly scientist and another butterflying friend spent the morning in Mesquite Wash north of town and then went up to Pine for the afternoon.

Mesquite Wash had a fire earlier this summer -- a man had built a home-made luggage rack on the back of his car. While he was driving, the suitcase caught on fire. So he pulled over and grabbed the suitcase and flung it off his car. It landed in the dry grass beside the road and burned many many acres of desert. I had not been over to check out the wash until yesterday. Luckily the riparian area was ok, but the burn goes on up the hill for quite a ways. We saw LOTS of butterflies, but only one monarch.

Pine is up in the mountains, so it was much cooler. We collected some milkweed seeds (the scientist had a permit from the Forest Service to do so) and then enjoyed lunch and ice cream.

A very nice day. Sorry to have to come back to 107 degrees. Accuweather says we have an inch of rain coming. Um, yeah.

Good morning, all! Today is our last day for this round of recording before we return on Oct 2. We'll begin this morning with more piano & cello, and we may finish that by the 2pm break. After that, we'll record more piano solos. When I get home tonight, I have to look over the price lists for full scores, miniature scores, and composer editions so we can finish all of that up tomorrow at the McGlinnventory.
!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Happy Birthday Wishes To Our DR Laura !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

TOD:

Sometimes a Day Goes By ("Woman of the Year")
I Don't Remember You ("Happy Time")
Dear One ("Kiss of the Spider Woman")
Home (70, Girls, 70)
Sing Happy and A Quiet Thing (Flora, the Red Menace)
Maybe This Time (Cabaret movie)
Let's Hear It for Me (Funny Lady movie)
Happy Endings (New York, New York movie)
Second Chance (Steel Pier)
The entire score for The Rink

So many others I can't remember because I'm still too sleepy.

I listened to "Kiss of the Spider Woman" the other day for the first time in a few years and was really impressed by how well that score serves it purpose, plus most of the songs are just great on the ear.

There's was a lovely song called LIKE LAURA in a musical Skip wrote in the 1990's with the late Richard Engquist.  The lyric started something like "There's never been a one like Laura, Fun like Laura, No no one, Running here, running there"  but that Laura was much more scattered than our Laura.

DR Cillaliz, re: DWTS last night.

I will agree that David Hasselhoff was not too good. I don't really care for him. Although I do like Kym.  I also love Derek and am biased towards his partners.  Unfortunately Karina is one of my favorites but I doubt i'll cheer for the Situation. Although to me he wasn't awful. I see some potential when he has equal time to everyone else.

DR Ginny - Your "Plan A" can turn into quite a lengthy excursion. There are three main areas, and each one takes few hours to get through. If your "behind the scenes" tour doesn't come through, be sure to check out the visitor's map when you get there. I made the "mistake" of spending so much time in the first area without realizing that the really interesting stuff was in the second and third areas.  However, that ride around the property is very nice. Keep an eye out for the eagle's nest.

I missed the season premiere of THE BIG BANG THEORY because I had my times confused......I did see TWO AND HALF MEN and the new show MOLLY & MIKE.  M&M was okay, but the sassy black policeman who partners Mike and the sassy Puerto Rican dope smoking sister are too much for me (and the actors playing the roles are....well....graduates of the Debra Messing tv Acting School) - but it's always fun to see Swoosie Kurtz.

HAWAII FIVE O - hmmmmmmmmmmmmm......like the cast, except for the "girl" of the group, pretty useless.....but making the squad a "James Bond" type of organization battling terrorists really negates the idea of having them be in Hawaii.....perhaps this is just the pilot, and they will concentrate on the island in future episodes....otherwise.....I may not stick around....although there is Scott Caan.

I also watched PRINCE OF PERSIA The Sands of Time last night.....well....the first 20 minutes of it.....

And I watched Russell Crowe's ROBIN HOOD, which was okay - but covers NONE of the ground of the other RH movies, it's all about how/why Robin of Loxley became Robin Hood and ends just as that part of the story begins........

Thanks for the new show report.

Jack, you didn't miss the premiere of Big Bang Theory. The new season starts this Thursday at 8pm. It's been moved. CBS has decided to try and build a comedy block on Thursday to compete with NBC. They start out with BBT and then move on to what looks like, to me, a truly awful show. When you base a show's premise on a Twitter account I think you're in for trouble. It's William Shatner's new show, **** My Dad Says. The Twitter feed is called Shit My Dad Says but CBS won't use that for the title.

Ground Glass with a Drano Chaser please!

And as I was leaving, I tweeted MoMA and their PR person... They will be talking to the guards on Wednesday. (The museum is closed tomorrow.)  Smiley

;D  Will you also be getting a special pass for the guards in the future?

And if the answer is "Yes", how often will there be a "Passing of the Guards" in your future?

Only a few more items left to retrieve from the house. Then must clean that old place. It is amazing how many dust bunnies appear once the furniture is gone.

So today I will be busy doing the above. Hopefully, I will have time to work in the apartment unpacking some more.

Apparently amidst all the raves Sugar is getting one pedantic fellow posted to castrecl that he is angry about the way we placed the instruments in the stereo soundfield because it doesn't exactly match how a symphony orchestra (or maybe any orchestra) would be - to which I say - this is a RECORDING and we do what's best for clarity sake and it's not far off what it would be anyway.  When Bacharach put the strings on the right in his mix of Promises he did so because he felt like it - tough.  I moved them back to the left on our remix only because we moved other stuff around for clarity sake - the idea is to have CLARITY - so that the wonderful orchestrations can shine forth and still not get in the way of the vocals.  Heaven save me from pedants and people who only go by some ancient "rule."  There used to be the ancient "rules" about how cast albums were recorded.  That was how you did it.  Period.  Vinnie and I came along and broke every rule you could and people looked at us askance for the first two years.  After that, they began to copy us, and now cast albums are done the way we do them.  So, we changed the rules, I guess and they were good changes.  But pedants can't deal with anything but what's set in stone.  For me, nothing is set in stone and recordings must work for the ear.  Nor is there anything wrong with how the instruments are placed in the soundfield, and since everyone BUT him is raving about how it sounds like it was recorded yesterday and how clear everything is, well, pedants go home.

We finished an hour and a half early. All the cello and piano music is recorded. The producer pissed me off today by decreeing no guests in the sessions, waiting until the person funding the recording and the cellist whose wife was there yesterday were out of the control room and I am not amused. So I need to let the sngers know that they must come alone to the sessions and rescind invitations to a couple of important folk.

The fur is chocolate chips and peanut butter chips.

I thought so but wasn't sure.  They seemed too perfect for frosting.  It must have taken great patience to place them all.  Great job on the cake!!!  Do you have a cat pan or did you cut it out?  It looks like a cake pan.

That moronic woman who threw acid on herself and told police she was attacked is being charged.

Seriously, who attempts suicide by splashing her face with acid?

She wasn't attempting suicide.  It's a very sad story, actually, which is getting a lot of coverage here since it was in Vancouver, WA, which is (despite what Washingtonians will tell you) basically a part of Portland.  She's a very troubled young lady who is legally deaf due to a childhood illness, was tormented by kids her whole childhood and just went through an evidently really ugly divorce.  She's obviously very, very troubled and I for one am hoping for the best for her.

I'm sympathetic to the fact she's clearly off balance and needs help; I'm not sympathetic to her claiming she was assaulted and collecting money amounting to quite a bit from sympathetic folk.

BK, I just listened to the entire second disc of the Sugar cast recording, and I absolutely love it!

However...I don't know if this has been mentioned yet, but did you know that there are a couple of typos in the liner notes? :-\

Quote
"The show was slightly revised for Los Angeles, with five additional songs — “See You Around,” “NiceWays,” “Don’t Be Afriad,” “I’m Engaged,” and “People In My Life.”

and:

Quote
I just couldn’t believe how much swimmy, washy reverb was used on that original mix (on on the CD released by Ryko).

Just thought that you'd want to know.

When FJL mentioned Skip's song of Laura it reminded me of the "haunting" David Raskin & Johnny Mercer's Laura.

So for DR Laura's birth here is Mercer's lyrics

Laura is the face in the misty light,
footsteps that you hear down the hall.
The laugh that floats on a summer night
that you can never quite recall.
And you see Laura on the train that is passing thru.
Those eyes, how familiar they seem.
She gave your very first kiss to you.
That was Laura but she's only a dream

One of my fellow State employees returned to work today, after spending a year of trying is luck in Hollywood.  He had some success.  He was asked to join SAG, which he did in March.  He is an episode of one of those web programs entitled (I think) HOLLYWOOD IS LIKE HIGH SCHOOL WITH MONEY.  It is apparently based on a book of the same name.  He is in episode 8.  He will also be appearing in one scene in tomorrow night's episode of THE DEFENDERS.  He has one scene with Jim Belushi.  I would have held out for a scene with Jerry O'Connell, but I guess he wasn't picky.

I told him today that with his SAG card in hand; he had better turn around and head on back to Hollywood.

If anyone is planning to tape THE DEFENDERS, I would gladly pay for a copy.  The show is on after my bedtime.  And if you check out the credits, his name is Aaron Washington.

I have learned many semi-exciting things about toilets over the past two days.  I find this rather amusing, as I have installed several toilets in my day and also repaired many of them.  But I never knew until yesterday that Kohler manufactures its own fill valve (also known as a ball cock assembly, especially to Elmore and MBarnum), and that, incredibly, no one in Portland carries replacements.  I even tried rebuilding the malfunctioning one yesterday to no avail.  Isn't it odd that Kohler would not have replacement parts available?

I also learned that there are evidently "Phases" of toilet manufacturing grades.  The common "flapper" and "float arm" assembly is Phase 5.  Newer toilets have a fill valve that actually lifts up to let the water into the bowl and those newer toilets are called Phase 6.  I can only wonder what Phases 1-4 might have been.

Of course I'm the last one who should tease about home repair

Especially since your services installing a tile backsplash are required here.  :)

Hmmm you're about the third or fourth person to say that...maybe I should start trading travel for backsplashes

On that happy note, I think I'll sign off.  I have a lot of work to do tomorrow.  Now that the distraction of the auditor is over.  I had to laugh this morning I walked into the hallway and saw a lawyer who told me they were now at his office and asked me all sorts of questions about what to expect.  I'm very glad I was near the top of the list

I am pleased to report that my oncolgist declared me to be 100% in remission  - he was so plwased with what he saw (and didn;t see) that he cancelled  my 6 month PET scan and said I don't need to come back for 6 months!

New toilet is installed and seems to be functioning as one would expect a toilet to.  :)

Glad everything came out alright!

Nifty neighborhood, DR MBARNUM...... Is that an underground parking garage in your new apt?  Do you have a doorman?

Not quite underground, just underneath part of the building. The apartment buidling is actually shaped like a T.

And alas, no doorman. It is Salem, after all.
