Well, you've read the notes, you've become one with the notes, the notes are you and you are the notes, and so it is time to post until the cows come home.
-
Wow! First post! I haven't done that in a long, long time.
Jose, I want to hear good things from you tonight! I've seemed to hit a snag. I haven't gained any more but I've stopped losing.
First kiss. I'll have to think about it.
Have a good day all. Posters and lurkers. I'll be back tonight.
-
This is a family site after all so I don't think I could go into detail about my first real kiss except to say that it happened when I was 21 (yes, I was a very late bloomer) and further description would only lead to more detail than is appropriate at this hour and for this family site.
WFO, allow me to add my thoughts and prayers to you for the unpleasant business. Even though Karma is gone from this site, we can only hope that "what goes around comes around" and the evil-doers (a GWB reference) will get theirs in the end.
It is 8am in NYC and Danise made the only post so far before me. Where is everyone?
-
Danise, hitting a plateau in weight loss is not necessarily a bad thing. It's one of the difficult parts of a diet. You have steady weight loss then the body starts to stabilize and no matter what you do, you have trouble losing another pound or two (or three). The plateau can stay for quite a while also. When you reach that point, as someone said at a Weight Watchers meeting, measure yourself as well as weighing yourself and think in terms of inches lost instead of pounds lost.
-
DR KERRY were you looking for JEANNE EAGELS? ???
I don't want to post about my "first" "real" "kiss" - but I want to read about everybody else's!
:-*
-
Panni - I need more info on the toxic danger you mentioned, as I'm hoping to reap part of the class action lawsuit that must be in progress. No ill health effects . . . yet.
First kiss was in the little theatre in the aforementioned place. There was a little passage-way where the curtain goes when its drawn. This leads to a dressing room, but, no matter what position the curtain's in, it's very cramped in there, a little like being wrapped in blankets. That's where Nancy Roseman and I gave in to our 16-year-old desires.
Tonight's the night, on a curtain-less stage (for it is round) - the show I've spent very long hours rehearsing. My call, today, is 11:20 a.m. which means I'll be playing for seven hours non-stop before anybody thinks of giving me a dinner break. You, and only you, DRs, get to look at the list of songs the graduating musical theatre students will be performing...

7pm at Broadway's Circle in the Square. It's free and you don't need a ticket. Just walk in. See you there.
-
wow, if I were closer, I'd want to go hear the kids sing those swell songs at Circle in the Square. So many favorites in there. Good voices? Talent to wrap it in?
-
Another late bloomer here! I was a grad student, playing Petey in Pinter's BIRTHDAY PARTY (that's alliterative!), and at the cast party the actress playing Meg slipped me the tongue. I was one of many men to have that close encounter at the party. She was just looking for love in all the wrong places. And she was really really drunk.
-
Good morning. Why I'm up so early I have no idea. I just spoke to a relentlessly efficient woman in India about an AOL problem I had. She solved it with such "obey me or I'll kill you" instructions that I think I would have assassinated James Gregory had she shown me the right card. (That doesn't really make sense, but it's so interesting I'll leave it.)
FS Pogue - Thanks for answering my question yesterday. It's nice to know I'm not alone in my Alice Through the Looking Glass Experiences ("Could you cut 20 pages. And here are 40 pages worth of new scenes we'd like you to add.").
Question of the Day: I don't remember my first real kiss. I know it was my freshman year of college (I too was a later starter.) I know it was with a student by the name of Alan who was in third year (an older man) studying to be a director. He was very handsome and (I thought) incredibly sophisticated. We met at an audition that he was watching. He came over to me after the auditions and asked me out. I almost fainted. Couldn't figure out why someone like him would be interested in someone like me. I had such low self-esteem back then about my attractiveness. When I look now at pictures of the very young me, I see quite a pretty girl - in a different way, true - but pretty. My daughter looks very much like I looked back then, and people are always telling me how lovely she is. That's been quite an eye-opener. I truly believed back then that I was too plain to exist. But I digress... However, perhaps what I just said will be instructive to some of our younger female HHWers who do go on sometimes about being too this, or not enough that. You are BEAUTIFUL. And you are YOUNG. Enjoy it because it sure doesn't last forever.
But, to get back to the question at hand, I have no specific memory of the first time. We did some very nice kissing as I recall, but no First Time memory pops up. All I do remember vividly is that he dumped me when I wouldn't immediately go to bed with him. (I hesitated because I was petrified of not being "worldly" enough for him.)
-
Noel, I just went to your OUR WEDDING - THE MUSICAL page. How incredibly swell all that musta been. Now I know why I never married... nobody was ever creative enough for me... So, are there CD's of your other shows???
-
Oh, Panni... been there, known the Hell of "Not attractive enough to be allowed to live" - It still crops up periodically, especially at my age, especially NOW when I'm re-entering The Biz - I weigh all of 115 pounds, but I'm on a friggin DIET, cuz I have performances in 10 days. And lookin' for Botox, except I'd look like a zombie in need of a hickey; maybe just a little mini-lift. I'm going to the gym every day (yes, folks, I'll be in Bristol a total of two weeks, and I JOINED A GYM). And my idol is Barbara Cook - when I grow up I wanna be her.
-
Noel - There are many news stories you can pick up, Here's a short one from a while ago:
Erin Brockovich at it again. According to an article on CNN.com, Attorney Ed Masry and his star environmental research director, Erin Brockovich, filed claims in court on April 28, 2003, on behalf of 25 alumni of the Beverly Hills Unified School District. The claims allege that oil drilling at the famous Beverly Hills high school (which the school benefitted from financially) released toxic levels of benzene and N-hexane, among other chemicals, effecting the health of over two hundred students. The school’s cancer rate is 20 to 30 times the national average.
The filing is the beginning step to a lawsuit which Masry’s law firm (Masry & Vititoe) expects to file against the city, school district and oil companies involved sometime in the next month. School district officials say tests done for the school by a regional environmental agency found no evidence of toxic gases at the site, but repeated tests conducted by an environmental specialist for Masry’s law firm found high levels of cancer-causing chemicals like benzene and toluene near the school’s athletic fields. The oil rig produced about 450 barrels of oil and over 120,000 cubic meters of natural gas a day, and brought in millions of dollars in revenue for the school district.

And Cybill Shepard has optioned the tv movie rights.
DRPanni - your paragraph made perfect sense....why don't you pass the time by playing a game of solataire?
-
PennyO - I only met you only once, at Bruce's party, but I remember thinking even before we were introduced what a great looking woman you were. So go to the gym to be healthy, not to be beautiful. You're already there.

DRPanni - your paragraph made perfect sense....why don't you pass the time by playing a game of solataire?
And I thought the Mertzes were the only undiscovered sinister agents in my life....
-
I'd go back to bed - but the poolman is outside - I live in a guesthouse which is next to a pool - and Abie the wonderdog is busy guarding the premises from him. Maybe if I just get into bed and pull the covers over my head, Abie will believe we're safe from imminent poolman attack and relax.
Have to get up soon anyway and start my day. I need to cut my script. Want to have it done and to the producers by Tuesday, latest. ...But I may try the nice warm bed for a few minutes.
-
DR WFO: I'd also like to hear the story when you're ready to share any of it. I was very touched reading all the lovely posts wishing you well.
Let me add good vibes to both you and Joe. Feel better, and I hope the time passes as quickly and painlessly as possible.

Panni, how dear. Thanks. But we're not talkin' sane or reasonable, here. My novel's "heroine" grapples with my self-image delusions for 240 pages... I know I'm not alone. So many of us feel we're never quite "enough". And those of us who live - and age - in front of audiences may be more prone to the insanity than civilians are. And, wow, it IS insanity!!! But it's also funny, it gets laughs, so I guess I'll hang on to it!!!

DR Laura II, good vibes to your aunt ~~~~~~~~~~

As for Scooter Girl (again) - If she does come back, it will be interesting to see how the public reacts to her. It will be very interesting. -And I just have to wonder if the producers of AI are compensating the (poor) "She Bangs, She Bangs" guy for their continual referencing of him. -Or did he sign away all of his "rights" in the initial relase form? -Probably...
William Hung (the She Bang guy) is actually getting a lot of attention. Apparently he has a fansite dedicated to him and received 7 million hits. He has been on Entertainment Tonight. And he was also on Ryan Seacrest's On Air tv show. He has been offered acting roles, including on 8 Simple Rules. Personally, I think this guy is hilarious. Although I am totally shocked by all the attention he has been getting.
As for Scooter Girl, I sort of feel like most viewers probably feel like me and LOVE her. But who knows, maybe some people don't care for her. I still don't know if she'll be in the wild card show. But I hope so.
BTW, what happened to everyone's comments about the results show last night? I saw a few people mention they were going to talk about it. But I didn't read anything.
I was not too surprised with the outcome. But I sort of thought the public might vote in that cute guy (who was 3rd) rather than little Diana.
The part that bugged me is that to me it seemed more like the judges fixed the vote, rather than let the public think on their own. The two that won (Fantasia and 16 yr old Diana) were the judges favorites BEFORE they even sang. They have been praising them. And IMO, the comments they gave, almost guaranteed their success. I hate it when the judges go overboard saying someone is the best, a huge star ... it makes people think they'd have to be crazy not to realize it.

My first kiss was from my mother. It was in the hospital and I was just a few hours old. I do not remember it, but knowing my late mother, I'm sure it is true.

There were two baseball diamonds in our grammar school playground. When the recess bell rang, everybody would race out to touch home base. Whoever touched it first, their team was first up to bat. More than once, I would beat this boy named Kenny to home plate. He got so angry that he began punching me in the arm (I had a bruise on my left arm for weeks). Then one day, near the swings, he kissed me on the cheek. And I, lady that I am, hauled off and slapped him across the face! How, do you ask, did I learn this particular response? I saw it in a MOVIE! This one experience supports my long held theory that the way most children learn is by imitation.

You will shoot the nominee through the head at the point in his speech when he says - "....that which I would give myself....my life before my liberty...." This should happen about a minute and half into the speech, depending on his reading time under pressure.
Johnny will lift Ben Arthur's body in his arms, fighting off anyone who tries to stop him, risking his life....I will have someone take the body and Johnny will begin to speak. The speech has been worked on here and in Russia for ten years. It's the most rousing speech I have ever read....calculated to rouse the crowd into hysteria which will sweep us into the White House with power that will make martial law look like anarchy.
And when I am there I will crush them beneath my feet for what they have done to you, and for what they have done in so contemptuously underestimating ....me. Spoken by Mrs Iselin...written by George Axelrod & Richard Condon.
Paraphrased and edited a bit...but still the most shocking and horrifying moment I have ever had in cinema....especially when she seals it with a soul kiss....to her son!

I was a freshman in college (18 years old) when I got my first real kiss. I was helping to tutor Spanish to the center on our football team. We were seated on a couch in his dorm room when he sprang across the sofa and laid one on me. I was startled because I had had no inkling of any attraction he had for me, but it was the start of a very intense but ultimately painful six month affair.
-
First kiss? Well, that would have to be somewhere around third grade, when Patty Sue B. and I told everyone we were "going together". It should have been Mary Kay Place, who lived next door, but she was two years younger than me and not interested in an older man.
The teacher left the room, and Patty Sue and I, at the urging of her female friends, stood up and planted a chaste little peck on each other's lips, to the delight of all about.
Can you tell by the names that this was in Oklahoma?
If we count only kisses that occur after we are aware that there's much more to it than kissing, I'll have to wait for college, and that would be Jerry S, after a beer bust. 'Nuff said. Oh, a Stan Lee reference!

Hello everyone,
I am attempting to find any contact information for Leland Palmer. We are doing a series at WNET/Channel 13 on the history of the Broadway musical and she may have some photos that we would like to use in the documentary. If anyone has any information for her or knows anybody that may have any contact info, please let me know.
Thanks so much!

Best thoughts to William F. and the raw orrdeal.
Our Wedding - The Musical
www.weddingmusical.com (http://www.weddingmusical.com)
is my first musical to appear on CD. I've video copies of one of the two musicals created to be corporate videos. But the eleven other produced shows could only be enjoyed by the live theatre audience.
Yes, there will be exceptional talent on stage tonight at 7. I wouldn't allow anybody to do Glitter and Be Gay (or The Girl in 14G, for that matter) unless they could truly pull it off. And another of the singers had the heady experience of being coached by their eminent composer.
I await Erin Brocovitch's call. :-\
-
Oh, I remember my first real kiss quite well. Like some other Dear Readers, I'm too bashful to share details, save that it was during the summer between my junior and senior years of high school and l liked it. I liked it a lot.
-
Javorg - if you contact the local AEA office, they will not give you her address...but they will let her know that you are trying to reach her and give her your information.

OK, so I'll push us on to page 2. This post will end page 1 and Number 30 will take us to page 2.
-
And here we are at page 2.

If you're in NYC, the local Equity office is at 46th Street between 6th and 7th Avenue (closer to 7th Avenue between the TGIF and the Laser Tag place. The phone number is 1-212-869-8530.

Okay...WHO was looking for JEANNE EAGELS?
-
Someone was looking for it, I remember. Kerry, I think.
Good morning. About to call the publisher to go over things.
-
All my bags are packed, I'm ready to go. (Oh, a Chantal Kreviazuk/John Denver/Peter, Paul & Mary reference.)
I am headed to the Springs of Palm, Dear Readers, for an extended weekend. I am not sure what my internet connectivity will be like there, but I do hope to drop in now and then. I certainly will catch up with all of your unseemly posts when I return on Monday.
In the meanwhile, keep those home fries burning.
Hugs and :-* :-* :-*

Have fun DRJay....say hi to Charlie Farrell for me!
-
Have a great weekend, Jay!

Corrections are being done, they promise me they will then do a page by page go through to make sure it's all fine, and I'll either have it back this afternoon or in the morning.
The cover, I'm happy to say, is approved.

My daughter tried out (for fun) for IDOL in San Francisco where she goes to school. She and her friends were lined up for hours. She told me there was this strange little Chinese guy in the line right in front of them. He had earphones on and was talking and singing/dancing to himself, rehearsing his song again and again. She wondered if he was "mentally challenged" (I'm being p.c. here) or just tuned a little off-center. Well, you know who the guy turned out to be -- the now famous William Hung. (You gotta love the name.)
-
I thought it was Kerry looking as well...he will let us know.

Good news, Mr. bk. And the cover news is mighty good, too. What a splendid day this is starting out to be here in the City of Studio.
-
Good morning!
Wow! I actually made it in to the "morning" - well, just barely, by the time I hit "Post" it will most likely be the afternoon here on the East Coast.
First Kiss - Hmmm... I, too, was a late bloomer... very late. I'm sure I had a few pecks and "busses" in high school and college, but my first real kiss wasn't until I was... umm... 30... almost six year ago. Like I said, I was a late bloomer. However, it was very much worth the wait. :D -Oh, there was one cast party in college... wait, was there? ;) ???
Well, it's a gloomy and gray day here in Richmond. Rain, some snow, sleet, etc... I believe DR Matt H may have more frozen precip to deal with than me.
DR Noel - and other interested DRs - Since you sort of brought it up - and reminded me - the two overdone songs from this past weekend in Memphis were "Gimme, Gimme" and "The Girl In 14 G". The typical exchange went like this:
"Umm... I'm starting here... It goes this fast... Then it picks up here for a few measures... Then I made a cut...Then when I get here, it slows down... Oh, but since I'm short on time, I'm gonna take it a little faster than on the recording... Then it slows back down here, and be sure to go a little slower leading into it since I need time for the breath... Then it gradually starts to speed back up here, and you can feel free to push the tempo since I won't be holding that note out all the way...Then it ends there."
On your Mark! Get Set! GO!
Again, I like both songs, but when you have to give more than two or three tempo indications for a song - especially in a situation where we try to keep the day "flowing" - then maybe you should consider doing a different song. For a callback, yes. For an initial audition, maybe to no. A few of the young ladies ended up rushing themselves since they had to spend a good chunk of seconds explaining their tempos and cues to me before they stepped center stage to start their audition. Now, they didn't have to rush themselves, but there was a sense of trying to keep the "dead time" between people down to a minimum. Make sense?
*If anything, a bunch of the company reps commented that a lot of the auditioners probably only brought in certain songs because they knew I would be playing the auditions. It was very much a compliment. -And more than one singer told me that would have never brought in their particular song had I not been playing again this year. Some of those Wild Party songs - either version - have, as my teacher would say, "a lot of black on the page".
Oh - and Ladies - If you can't belt and/or mix, PLEASE do not sing "I'm Not Afraid". Mainly because I like the song, I like playing the song... and then my "hopes" are immediately deflated when a whisper of a voice comes out of your body. Sing! -Or don't sing!
Ooohhh... was that a little "vent-y".... ;)
-
Oh... And the main reason those two songs were overdone is the fact that they were recently published. So, it goes to reason that since it was a "new" song, not everyone will be singing it. WRONG!
So... Since AI is based on the Popular Vote, what do you think would happen if they brought back William Hung during the Wild Card round?... Hmmm.....
-
He would be.
-
Jose, I once did auditions for "Godspell" years and years ago where every last soprano (and there were scores of them) did "Memory" (the Streisand version had just come out, not surprisingly). After the first three or four, I started saying "It can't happen again." After the 24th or 25th, I was resigned to my fate.
I, too, do a lot of the cattle call auditions up here and am always flabbergasted by the cuts and tempi people tell me about 5 seconds before they're about to sing. And the numbers people choose--I don't know if it's a northwest thing, but totally off-the-wall choices abound up here in keys that are not user-friendly (I mean, I'm pretty adept at sight-reading, but when you're getting to measure-fulls of double sharps you know something's wrong!).
-
DR Panni: Ha ha, that is the best story ever! Your daughter was in line with "she-bang" guy :)
-
Hmmm...first kiss. I believe it was Lori Conway in the hallway at Phoenix High School in 9th grade. We were friends but I think we decided to be boyfriend and girlfriend for some reason or other. She moved to Texas at the end of that semester. That was the only time that I kissed a girl. My next real kiss didn't come around until I was 20.
Today is the first day of my 5 day weekend! Hoo and Rah!! I hope to get many things accomplished this long weekend...but I will likely end up watching a lot of DVDs and taking naps! LOL!
-
My first real kiss? Wow, that's a tough one. Being an actor, and having watched lots of movies, I knew what a romantic kiss was supposed to be like, so during my youth I managed to make any number of young ladies swoon. But for me, my first real kiss came when I was probably twenty. Home from college for a long weekend, and armed with a phoney I.D., I finally got up the nerve to go into Tacoma's only gay bar. There I met the man who would be my first real date.
Enough said.
-
Gee, I go away for a day and all sorts of things get overlooked.
How could you have a day discussing Disney Animation without referencing The Mouse That Roared (http://scarletstreet.com/articles/disney.htm) article written by DR tb.
And how could TomOfOz escape criticism for posting this:
with the caption "Unpaid Bears".
I mean really, look at the critter on the right! That is NOT a bear!
Koala (http://yahooligans.yahoo.com/content/animals/species/9786.html):
Phascolarctos cinereus
Although this creature is often called a Koala "bear" it is not a bear. It is a marsupial, like kangaroos and opossums, raising its young in a pouch on its body until the youngster is ready to venture out into the world.
The Koala is a plant eater, and almost all of its diet is made up of the leaves of eucalyptus trees. These leaves happen to be poisonous, but the Koala has special substances in its stomach that neutralize the toxins. The Koala is slow-moving and sleepy, rarely wasting energy with bursts of activity.
der Brucer (moving slowly, feeling sleepy, not anticipating any bursts of activity)
PS Please note the Republican Bear, second from the left.

Jay -- Please give dear Mr. Manilow a call for me and tell him that I have been thinking of him, and hope he is feeling better.
Thanks.

I have big news.
REAL big news (ooh a JRB PARADE reference!)
The haircut is happening today at 4pm. Hair vibes must be sent.
The final style decision?
Take a gander and tell me what you think?

Luckily we avoided the frozen precipitation. All we got was rain, and it's moving away now. I dragged myself into a hot shower today in an effort to feel better and am going to try to partake of some nourishment with a friend in a few minutes. I certainly do feel better after that shower and look forward to having something nutritious to eat.

And a note on yesterdays fascinating diversion into the art of the flush:
When I was a tad of a lad we didn't "flush" anything - we "pulled the chain". In case I wondered why, I only had to visit my Aunt Ella's - her facility (which she called a "terlit" had a traditional looking bowl with seat, but mouted on the wall high above was a large tank which held water, connected with a pipe to the bowl below; suspended from the tank was a long metal chain which one "pulled" to effect a flush.
Aunt Ella's house also demonstrated why my folks referred to "leaving the phone off the hook" - 'cause Auntie's phone indeed was one of those classic upright ebony gadgets with the mouth piece starring at you menacingly, and the ear gadget hung in a spring loaded hook at it's side. You lifted the ear-piece, the hook sprang up , and you got a dial tone. If you wanted an operator, you "jiggled the hook". The phone was on a small table at which was placed a piano stool, covered in brocaded cover (with fringe!)
der Brucer (with fond memories of antimacassars - no relation to Anti Mame)
Hmm...how would you use your foot to flush Aunt Ella's terlit?
-
DR MattH,
Good-health vibes heading your way. Keep feeling better.

So... Since AI is based on the Popular Vote, what do you think would happen if they brought back William Hung during the Wild Card round?... Hmmm.....
Well occasionally the voters like to choose someone who the judges hate. But they would never vote for William Hung. I mean, he can't sing at all. I think the voters know that they are trying to choose a superstar. And William might get some gigs. But I don't think he will ever get a record deal.
Speaking of contestants the judges hate, does anyone remember that horrible blonde guy (i think his parents were deaf). The judges hated him. And the public voted him in (even though he was bad - I think Simon tore him to shreds).
Um, judges, you guys picked him to be in the final 32. If you thought he was that bad, WHY DID YOU CHOOSE HIM???
-
-Of course, my absolute favorite thing at an audition is when someone puts their music in front of me... and all that their music is is just the melody line. They copied their part from a Chorus Book. No piano accompaniment, no tempo indications (usually), no chords. Nothing for me to play! Nothing! And I've had this happen to me at "professional" auditions! With "professionals" giving me their "music".
And then they get flustered when I tell them I can't really play for them with what they gave me. "Well, that's what I used in rehearsal?!?" Exactly! That's what you used in rehearsal, not your musical director and rehearsal pianist. I've never really turned anyone away. I just "warn" them that I'll be faking the accompaniment... and that they now owe me big time!
DR JMK - I share your "Memory" woes... I sat in one of those open calls for "Forbidden Broadway" in DC once... They gave everyone 15 seconds! 15! Seconds! -Which actually is enough time, but.. still.. 15 seconds! Well, they wanted to hear the ladies belt... So... Since the opening measures of "Memory" start on a C, then show off a D... And then there were the show-offs who started at the last key change with the E-flat and the F's. It was a very appropriate and effective song choice for those auditions, but we saw about 500 people that day... about 350 women... Talk about Cat Scratch Fever!
-Oh, and then there were the "smart" ones who had the song in the show key - well, one of the show keys - where the song started off in B-flat - down a step than the currently published key at that time.
-
DR Emily: I like that hairstyle!
Btw, for those flush obsessed, you must LOVE automatic flushers!
-
And William might get some gigs. But I don't think he will ever get a record deal.
Wow, something really weird just happened with the quote feature, so I can't wait to see how this shows up.
Anyway, Jennifer, methinks you may be too young to remember Mrs. Miller or even Tiny Tim. The American public is frequently willing to buy CDs of "strangely talented" (was that PC or what) folk. To those people I have two words to say: Jonathan and Darlene (well, OK, that's three words, but you get my drift).
-
Jose, I once did auditions for "Godspell" years and years ago where every last soprano (and there were scores of them) did "Memory"
I take it that "Memory" finally replaced "People" and "Feelings". How many guys used "Corner of the Sky"?
der Brucer (who sure misses a really good piano bar! - Laguna Beach is now a rather long drive)

Looks like the quote feature worked fine and dandy.
The name Darlene reminds me of a running gag I had growing up in Utah--making up fake names that sounded like real Utah names (I'll let you read between the lines there). Anyway, some of my favorites were:
Husband named DeVoid
Wife named Rotunda
Son named DiVan
Daughter named VaGeena
I have imported all of these names into my new musical "Attack of the Killer B's", so I will have to bitchslap you from here to Uranus (read between the lines there, too :) ) if you attempt to steal them from me. You may, however, license them from me for a very modest (high button blouse and sensible skirt and heels) fee.

DR JMK: I think William Hung is hysterical. But have you heard him. He literally cannot carry a tune PERIOD. They showed a piece on him on Entertainment Tonight. And he is hugely popular at his school. Everyone wants to go karaoking with him. They showed it, and of course they made him sing "she bang" :)

My first real kiss? ... There I met the man who would be my first real date.
You kissed on the FIRST date! Hussy! (Ruth sans "e")

JRAND::::
Jack, Yes it was me looking for "Jeanne Eagels." It was me! I was yelling back at the computer. Couldn't you hear me?!!!?!?!
The first kiss I wanted occurred when I was 15. I wasn't a late bloomer. Oh sure, there make-out sessions with boys and girls pairing off, but that does NOT count. His name was John-- he was an older man of 16(always did like old men--but they seem to happen so much younger these days!) This was a violins playing, fireworks exploding, movie heaven kiss. Of course it led to much more than that. ^ months later my heart was broken. But what bliss (for the most part) in between. First other kiss was kindergarten witha girl named Katherine-- who we all callled KC.
All this talk of beauty and being wanted--guys go through the same thing. I copied something I had read last year. Barbara Cook was giving a master class, and she so wisely pointed out the following:
"...As Ms. Cook, 74, put it in one of several pithy epiphanies in the course of the class: "It's so hard to believe that what the world wants is us. It's hard to believe, whatever you're doing, that you're enough. We are all, always, enough."
-
MBARNUM:
Michael-- the last I heard of Lee Patterson, he was still living in New York-- even after his days on "One Life to Live."

Jennifer, if the voters are influenced by the judges' comments, all the better. I think the judges give their honest opinions and last night they were dead on...the two that got picked were the two most deserving candidates...head and shoulders above everyone else in that group...with strong voices, good stage presence and showmanship and professionalism.
And God knows, the judges don't always agree with each other and the audience hardly ever rubber-stamps the judges' opinions...Last year. Josh Gracin kept coming back for weeks long after he should have been eliminated...it had more to do with cheap, easy patriotism because he was a Marine than his dodgy talent. And he wasn't any judges' favourite.

This is so good, I'm going to repeat it:

Anyway, Jennifer, methinks you may be too young to remember Mrs. Miller or even Tiny Tim.

“There was no one who sang like Mrs. Miller, for which I'm sure many people are grateful !"
“…don't listen to Mrs. Miller if you are eating or drinking--choking is a definite risk !"
“…Her jarring, sometimes-soprano, always-compelling voice of these cuts inspires cats to howl."

I take it that "Memory" finally replaced "People" and "Feelings". How many guys used "Corner of the Sky"?
der Brucer (who sure misses a really good piano bar! - Laguna Beach is now a rather long drive)
..."What I Did For Love" and "All That Jazz" and "Hey, Big Spender" (I've never understood this one - it's a dance number, and most girls don't/can't sing the high notes... and they spend most of the time waiting for the "da, da-du-da, da-da... pling") and "Vanilla Ice Cream" (one high note does not an audition song make!) and the last part of "Soliloquy" and...
As for "Corner of the Sky" - In my experience, it's never been that "popular". "On the Street Where You Live" and "Something's Coming" seem to be the ones from the Tenor's Greatest hits that get done a lot. Oh, and "Anthem"...but I think it's in a "low phase" right now.
-And as many of the books out there will tell you... It's not that these songs are overdone... It's just that they usually sung badly! Many times over! You can just hear the internal groans when an intro starts sometimes. ;) Hopefully, the singer will be fully prepared and will knock your socks off!
However, I've never minded "If I Loved You". A classic indeed!

Can anything ever really replace "Feelings"? This was another running gag of mine (I seem to have gagged a lot, evidently) at a piano bar where I would tell people that unless they kept me busy with requests (and, hopefully, tips), that my OCD would kick in and I'd play 'Feelings' over and over and over. Yes, send an incensed email to their Updates section asking why an actor of this stature doesn't have complete, up-to-the-date and accurate information on his listing.
(I sent a fairly subtantive update on someone months ago that has yet to make it onsite, while a trivia item I sent on another person got added almost immediately).

William Hung is not on the show anymore. He only did his one audition for the judges. And did NOT make it to Hollywood (where the 100 best are taken).
Here is his website, which I just pulled up now to show you:

Oh btw, did anyone see Jimmy Fallon's portrayal of William on last Saturday's Saturday Night Live? It was funny!

DERBRUCER: Koalas are indeed marsupials but have been referred to as "Native Bears" and more often as "Koala Bears" since the white invasion of this country. The Macquarie Dictionary (Australian) offers the term "Koala Bear" as a legitimate term. You don't have to be a bear to be a bear.

Three different folks I have tried to direct to this here joint have told me they can find the site, but can't figure out how to get to the discussion threads. Inasmuch as the design is less than perfectly intuitive, I have prepared the following Guide to HHW for Dummies:
1. Go to www.HainesHisWay.com
2. At the right side of the screen you will see a section entitled “bk’s notes II”; at the end (you wish) of the notes there is a link labeled “Unseemly Button” – click!
3. You will now be presented with the rest of the daily sermon notes; go all the way down to the bottom and you will finally see a link labeled “Now Visit The Haines His Way Community Forums” – click! (The purists among us know it should be “fora”, but any attempt to bring this to BK’s attention would launch a stream of “for a” puns that would consume a whole daily thread.)
4. Now you see a more familiar looking screen with the first topic being the Daily Discussion threads. (All the threads can be read, but only the current thread will accept postings.)
Quiz for all DRs:
1. Did you read all of John Galt’s speech in “Atlas Shrugged”?
2. Did you read all the bear stories in “Garp”?
3. Do you read each and every word in the bk notes?
IF you answered "Yes" to all three questions you win an “I Loved Moby Dick” bumper sticker!

I disagree. I don't think it's good that the judges manipulate the public into voting for who they want. I agree that Fantasia was very good. But IMO the judges had already decided who they wanted voted in (I head them say it on other shows).
And:
And God knows, the judges don't always agree with each other and the audience hardly ever rubber-stamps the judges' opinions...Last year. Josh Gracin kept coming back for weeks long after he should have been eliminated...it had more to do with cheap, easy patriotism because he was a Marine than his dodgy talent. Once the top 12 are chosen I don't think the judges have as much power. Because you are not voting one person in. You are voting 11 people in. So anyone with any fan base can go far.
DERBRUCER wrote:

I agree with CharlesPogue here. I think Josh went so far because he was a marine. I didn't find him good, or sexy. But that is just me.

Bruce, with all this talk about your book, I was thinking you would ask today’s question. I believe last time you asked when our first kiss was. It was a long way from my first kiss in kindergarten, to my first real kiss in high school. I will post about that later-MAYBE.

Well, first kiss of any sort would have been on the playground in first grade with my friend Mary Lou (now just Mary, and she's a nurse in Tacoma). Then there were a few friendly little smooches in high school that didn't mean anything... just a little peck between friends. As for the first "real" kiss, the type you feel down to your toes, that wasn't until my freshman year of college. A girl named Theresa and I had become good friends through our music theory class, and we both realized this was going somewhere, and one afternoon we suddenly found ourselves in a liplock in her dorm room. Started off a very nice relationship over the next few months. Still friends, and she's getting married in May!

WEL, William Hung is not on the show, nor do I expect him to be as a singer. They may have him on as a special audience guest at some point this season, but his appearing as one of the finalists would negate the very concept of the show, and Simon Cowell would never stand for that.
Mrs. Miller and Tiny Tim were novelty acts that people enjoyed as freakish performers who happened to "sing," but they were not and would never have been considered potential pop idols which is what they're trying to find for AMERICAN IDOL.
-
So, the TIVO unit froze about ten minutes after it froze the last time. Brilliant. So, I unplugged it from the back of the unit - the phone rang - I pulled the chord out a bit to hook it under the machine so it wouldn't slide back behind the TV. It came unplugged and there is no way for me to move the TV to get back there and plug it in. Brilliant.
-
Speaking of "Atlas Shrugged," did anyone else throw the book across the room when the secret society was revealed?
I got about 40 pages into it, and gave up. Objectivism, objectively speaking, is subjectively boring.
-
Of course, the two weeks of auditions are always AMERICAN IDOL's most highly rated episodes until the final two episodes. People enjoy laughing at all the rotten talent on display (William Hung a perfect example), and now that we're dealing with the real singers, the ratings, while still huge, are 5 million or so less than the ratings for the audition shows.
-
DerBrucer-that second bear isn't cute-just creepy.

Verse 7 should help make every lyricists day!
Jake, the rancher, went one day
to fix a distant fence.
The wind was cold and gusty
and the clouds rolled gray and dense.
As he pounded the last staples in
and gathered tools to go,
The temperature had fallen,
wind and snow began to blow.
When he finally reached his pickup,
he felt a heavy heart.
From the sound of that ignition,
he knew it wouldn't start.
So Jake did what most of us would do
if we had just been there.
He humbly bowed his balding head
and sent aloft a prayer.
As he turned the key just one last time,
he softly cursed his luck.
They found him three days later,
frozen stiff in that old truck.
Now Jake had been around in life
and done his share of roaming.
but when he saw Heaven, he was shocked--
it looked just like Wyoming!
Of all the saints in Heaven,
his favorite was St. Peter.
(Now, this line ain't needed
but it helps with rhyme and meter)
So they set and talked a minute or two,
or maybe it was three.
Nobody was keepin' score –
-- in Heaven time is free.
"I've always heard," Jake said to Pete,
"that God will answer prayer,
But the one time I asked for help,
well, he just plain wasn't there."
"Why does God answer prayers of some,
and ignore the prayers of others?
That don't seem exactly square --
- I know all men are brothers."
"Or does he randomly reply,
without good rhyme or reason?
Maybe, it's the time of day,
the weather or the season."
"Now I ain't trying to act smart,
it's just the way I feel.
And I'm wondering, could you tell me --
-- what the heck's the deal?!"
Peter listened very patiently
and when Jake was done,
there were smiles of recognition,
and he said, "So, you're the one!!"
"I remember the day your truck wouldn't start,
and you sent your prayer a-flying,
You gave us all a real bad time,
with hundreds of us trying"
"A thousand angels rushed,
to check the status of your file,
But you know, Jake, we hadn't heard from you
in such a long, long while."
"And though all prayers are answered
and God ain't got no quota,
He didn't recognize your voice,
and started a truck in North Dakota."
BETTER KEEP IN TOUCH

Since this is February 12, I thought I would repeat one of my favorite New York stories. I was staying at the Milford and I was heading back to the hotel after dinner. I was walking down West 45th, and there a husband and wife and their three young children walking in front of me. One of the kids looked over at the Booth Theater and said, Daddy, what’s that say?
It says ‘Booth Theater’, said the father.
But what is that place, Daddy? persisted his son.
After a moment of hesitation, the father answered, That’s where Abraham Lincoln got shot.

All of these audition songs remind me of the movie "Fame" and the character of Doris Finsecker auditioning for the drama department(!), singing to a very badly performed taped accompaniment and her mother crying her eyes out at how beautifully she thought her daughter was performing. One of the funniest moments in that movie!
-
One more thing, then back to writing... My daughter just faxed me the best Valentine (she also sent me a card which begins "Mom, you're an Angel"...)...But what came through on my Fax machine today was a copy of a Certificate naming her to the Dean's List at the Univ. of San Francisco. Accompanying it was a note: "Happy Valentine's Day, Love, Your smart daughter"
Now I have to tell you that for years I would tell her that she was so very smart and that would be reflected in her marks if she would only apply herself. (She was reading at a grade 5 level in kindergarten.) All through middle school and high school she told me to leave her alone. Which I did. You can't force a person to study. She always got by, sometimes she did well, sometimes not. But she hardly ever put in that extra effort which would have allowed her live up to her potential. I can't tell you how many times I heard, "Just 'cause you were a good student doesn't mean I'll be good. Because I'm stupid." And no matter how many times I told her she wasn't, she didn't believe me.
But when she transferred to the U. of SF last year, something clicked and she finally got it.
...It's amazing how sometimes it all pays off!

The actor in question is Chad Kimball, who can be heard on the BK produced CD of the Godspell 2000 revival.
For the curtain call of ITW, he came out holding Milky White's head and front hooves, the only time we, the audience, got to see his face. The volume of the applause shot up automatically. It was a challenging costume: the front half involves a stilt-like construction for the forelegs, plus a rig for moving the mouth. The part was originally assigned to an actress/dancer, but the stress on her back was too much, so Kimball, who had been an understudy, got the promotion.
I understand that he's in demand as an actor, because of his turn as Milky White.

I took a sabbatical from doing shows when I was with my first lover, but when I returned to doing them (1989), I noticed then and for the next few years, the song used most often by girls auditioning was "On My Own." I got REALLY sick of hearing that song sung at auditions.

And remember DR GEORGE that Doris' mother took a picture, too!
Since my email name is jAYNRAND - yes I have read ATLAS SHRUGGED and no I didn't want to throw it across the room at any point.

Oft have been the times when der Brucer and I have imagined filming this song, with Eponine walking along the banks of the Seine.
Or the In-Seine.
Or the Out-Seine, if you prefer.

Our very own Richard Valley has just put up a terrific overview of the three Sherlock Holmes box set DVDs. Check it out at http://dvds.allaccessworld.com (http://dvds.allaccessworld.com)

Sometimes I wonder if people write songs for shows write songs, not just to try and be pop-u-lar (a Wicked reference), but with the idea that it might be a good audition song and it can become much more popular with theater performers, who in turn will record the songs, sing the songs in cabaret performances, etc.

That cow aria could start something like ... "Stop wondering what you're chewing, mooooove on, your lfe is not your decision, mooooove on" feeble, yes :)

My back is killing me. What I ever did to my back to make it want to commit such mayhem I have no idea. This is what happens when you slave over a hot laptop all the livelong day.

Bruce, that's for sure. I really get it in the left shoulder.

Evening all!
Ben I posted at about 6:30 AM before I went to work. I don’t know why it shows 3:37 AM. I’m on EST as well.
Thanks also about the words about hitting a plateau. I expected it. Since I don’t have that much to lose (30 pounds total) I rather thought I would have hit it before now.
First kiss? I seem to remember it being in grade school. I don’t even remember his name. We were walking home from school and his friend asks him, “Well, are you gonna do it?” Next thing I knew I had a sloppy kiss on my cheek. I was so shocked I didn’t do anything, while he and his friend ran, laughing down the road. Boys are weird.
I didn't have any other kind of kiss until years later, after high shool, so I was both an early and a late bloomer.
I like the hair style, Emily. I just hope your happy with it when it’s done. It’s one thing to choose something, it’s another to have it thrust on you.
I had a really nice day today. It started out with getting the first post. The when I went to work, I found 3 valentines on my desk. 2 bags of candy (which I didn’t touch–I swear I brought them home and gave them to my mother) and a mylar (not a rubber) balloon in the shape of a heart! Everyone got one from one of the bosses. Wasn’t that a very nice way to start the day?
Tomorrow everyone has got to wear red of some kind. I’m going to wear a red shirt.
I would also like to tell everyone that my boss hasn’t forgotten about my reclass. She spoke to me about it the other day and we have started putting the paperwork to together. That is VERY good news and will go a long way towards my dream of getting a different house.
I also meant to comment the other day about “Faith of the Heart” someone here (forgive my failing memory but I don’t remember who) being all I, I, I. Well a point I wanted to make was that this was when we first went to space. It was years later that the Federation was formed and the Us, Us, Us started. We were not to the point of wanted to work with other races just yet. Hope that makes sense.
I think the song works for the feel of the show and I love the words. Very uplifting.

Yoga, sweet boy, yoga. And chocolate. And lots of stretching. And something chocolate. And some loving friend to rub yer shoulders and pound yer spine with a rubber mallet... and something chocolate. (Can you tell I've been depriving myself???)

I'm depraved on account of I'm deprived.

Good evening.
Well, just wanted to say, "Good Evening". For now.
Good afternoon. Good class - although some of those "kids" need to "Just Do It!". And a good dinner.
And now some TV time.
See you later...
Oh, DR Matthew... Congratulations! Now you can act out part of Sunday In the Park With George... "Everybody loves, Eric.."... Well... ???

I'm tired-so shutting the computer off.
Good night.

It's going to be an early night for me, too. Have made tentative plans for tomorrow evening to see a production of CHAPTER TWO, but I can't go if I don't feel better, so I'm hoping a longer night's sleep will do it.
I saw Richard Valley's comments at The DVD Place, and made my own comments. Never did I think those Holmes DVDs would see the light of day in such beautiful, remastered transfers. And with the release of the two Fox/Holmes period pieces, the set will be complete. Sometimes, life is VERY good.

Close, but those near and dear to you have reported that you are deprived on account of yourre depraved.

Oh, to eat or not to eat, that is the question. I had tacos without the shells for luncheon, followed by some peanuts without the shells for snackcheon. Whether 'tis nobler in the mind to suffer the slings and arrows of outrageous hunger or...

Did you write that poem. DerBurcer?
Don't I wish! I'm just old, not talented; however I have strange and wonderful friends who send these kind of things to me regularly.

... feeble, yes :)
In a word, yes! But them what would this board be with a plethora of feebilites!
der Brucer FHD (Doctor of Feeble Humor)
I can hear it now - someone will hit on "humor", then "feeble"will become "femur", and we'll end with a rousing chorus of "Dry Bones".)

Oh, to eat or not to eat, that is the question.
Eat.
BTW - Tonight at 11 on the Ch 4 news there is going to be a special report on Low Carb foods. They've tested them to see what's real and what isn't.

Barbie and Ken: It's Over
Thursday, February 12, 2004
By Catherine Donaldson-Evans
NEW YORK — One of America's most famous couples is calling it quits. Are you sitting down?
After 43 years together, Barbie and Ken — as in the dolls — have decided that breaking up is hard to do, but do it they must.
Since they're dolls — and famous — Barbie and Ken had no direct comment about their split at the International Toy Fair , where the bombshell was dropped. The news predictably came from their spokespeople during a press conference Thursday.
"This is an announcement we thought we’d never make," said Barbie’s publicist, Ken Sunshine (. "I will confirm that Ken and Barbie are going to go their separate ways."
Read the lurid details here! (http://www.foxnews.com/story/0,2933,111234,00.html)

DR Kerry will be accompanying DR Sandra and me to Palm Springs this weekend. Maybe we'll see DR Jay there.
-
I just got back from seeing CAN-CAN at Encores! There were really great performances from Patti Lupone, Charlotte D'Amboise, and Reg Rogers, someone I've never seen before. Michael Nouri was charming and so was Eli Wallach. For me, a lot of the fun was hearing a fine band play the interesting scene change music.
-
I wanna go to Palm Springs too this weekend!!!
But since I can't...
DR Noel - Hope your showcase/recital/presentation went well.
Goodnight.
-
What a cast for Can-Can!
Speaking of which, I can can work no longer tonight. 'Night, all.

I don't usually watch DVDs again and again and again but I have (appropriately) watched "The Triplets Of Belville" three times in three days. I have wanted to share it with friends. And I thought I was someone who would never do anything thrice.
-
Nearly the end of the day and I have refrained from discussing the topic of the day. I do remember the where and the when and most definitely the who. And I have no regrets. My teenage years were very enjoyable and life was a lot safer in the 1960's.
-
Jane I'm so glad you enjoyed the CD! I'm flattered that you found it prasieworthy at all :)
After a long night of rehearsals, I think it's bedtime...g'night all
-
Just watched another of those funky Seijun Suzuki movies. I really like his films.
-
Topic of the day: I really don't remember who gave me my first (non-familial) kiss. My first regular kissing was my ex-boyfriend...it's been about four years since we met and about a half a year since we broke up (the long distance thing just didn't work for us). We're still friends, though, so when we do get together.... ;) (I know, I know...TMI!)
I've only ever kissed girls (shudder...but please, take no offense esteemed women of HHW!) when I was on stage in shows. I played Lord Brockhurst in The Boy Friend and had to kiss Dulcie. I also played Hero in A Funny Thing Happened On the Way to the Forum and had to kiss Phylia. They were great friends, so that made it a lot easier.
-
Oh yeah, first kiss stories. To be totally honest, the first actual kiss I had was technically during a game of spin the bottle. Ugh...we don't talk about that. The next one was my first boyfriend, who was a terrible kisser. But the first kiss that I, to quote Jed "felt down to my toes," was my only real long term boyfriend. Sitting on his couch, watching Empire Strikes Back, which, to this day, I have never really seen the ending of... ;) It was a great kiss...matter of fact, he gave me a lot of great kisses...

Must be sleepy time down South. I, myself, am quite sleepy and shall go to bed as soon as I post the new notes.
