Well, you've read the notes, the notes drank to that, and now it is time for you to post until the drinking cows come home - they're currently having some MOO-tais.

And the word of the day is: PROEM!

Vixmom asked me to tell you all that she's had a computer virus and will be back as soon as possible.

Morning all.
That is all.

centennial summer did have one virtue when it came to its song score.
All Through the Day which was sung by Larry Stevens and was nominated for an Academy Award.
If you don't recognize the name he later changed his name and sold his records on tv.

And one for Mahler!

Good morning, all! I got some semblance of sleep last night, and I will shortly leave for my yearly physical exam. Following that, I will head to the market, purchase some things, and head home.
-
Good morning, all.

TOD:
I'm still working on seasons 1 and 2 of JUSTIFIED. It's a good show.
Also, assuming it arrives from Netflix tomorrow, A NIGHT IN OLD MEXICO with Robert Duvall.
-
TOD:
Going out of town for the weekend. Doubt I'll get to watch anything until Sunday.
Car CD: Discs 17-22 of Barnaby Rudge.

And the word of the day is: PROEM!
And The Song Of The Day Is:INVOCATION AND INSTRUCTIONS TO THE AUDIENCE
-
Good morning, all.
Enjoyed a pretty good sleep, following a long rehearsal last night that was held in a temporary location way the HELL out in the country. I was dead tired afterward, and I took a Benadryl to wipe out some annoying sneezing and to induce even more solid sleeping. It all worked, and was aided by a nice improvement in the weather. We're hovering around 80-82 for a high, which is hardly what mid-July should be about, but it's clear and DRY for a change.
More coffee!

Friday morning greetings! Tomorrow is Rob and Mary Linda's move-in day. The upstairs is not as finished as we'd hoped, but the rooms are empty and the bathroom is operational. We've had an initial conversation with the plumbing contractor about the wet bar and expect a phone call soon with details.
-
So, this morning I needed a nice leisurely waking up session, with coffee, in the recliner, and that's what I got. Now it's time to face the world a little bit.
I need to use today to catch up on some cleaning and organizational matters around the house, work on some music, and hopefully watch something really good this evening. Not going out or staying up too late, because tomorrow morning is one of the large library book sales I never like to miss (Westport), and while I shan't attempt to be at the head of the line with the dealers, I don't want to be too far back, either.
-
Sorry to hear about Vixmom's computer woes!
-
TOD:
I don't know. I just don't know. But I imagine tonight's viewing will be one of the Twilight Times.
I've been watching bootlegs of AVENUE Q performances and need to take a day or two off from that.
-
That wasn't much of a post.
And neither is this one.
But say what they want, they'll never be able to say these weren't posts at all. No sir, they won't.

Friday media report - I just finished listening to an audiobook, Ann Patchett reading her This is the Story of a Happy Marriage. Now I want to go to Nashville to visit her bookstore, Parnassus Books (http://www.parnassusbooks.net).

Wonderful and joyful notes today.....so nice to read about Miss Elaine Stritch from MR BK.
She played Lucy in 1947 at the Westport Playhouse with Bela Lugosi as DRACULA.

That same year, they also tried out a play there with Lugosi titled THREE INDELICATE LADIES which didn't get very good reviews.

That is a beautiful thought.

Fabulous Fern's is a bar and grille just a block and a half from our house. We originally thought it was a Nursery!
In any case...
Why is Fern clutching her pearls? Is she a drag queen? We don't really know.

Good! I hate having squishy NY November dates.

Thank you DR Kerry for your kind email! Every positive vibe sure helps when instead of being on the sunny side of the street I gravitate toward ol' Joe Btfsplk and worry that I forgot my umbrella.
Thank you DR Laura! I would like to take that walk with you. That would be great!
Thank you DR TCB! I appreciate your kindness. Yes, Safeway has really been a godsend with its delivery service.
I'm trying to fight this depression and especially without medication. I dislike any pills. I even hate having to take Claritin.

No. I don't. (And I'm tired, so the brain isn't function well today.) I was referring to my personal favorite among Dickens' novels.

No. I don't. (And I'm tired, so the brain isn't function well today.) I was referring to my personal favorite among Dickens' novels.
I was just referencing (mainly) the Monty Python "Bookshop" sketch which was recycled from "At Last The 1948 Show" which, as you may know, counted among its members many future Pythoners as well as the great Marty Feldman, who was a crucial part of the original version of that sketch.
Otherwise, no offense intended, or intense offended.

No offense taken. That rings a distant bell. They really were well educated, which made the literary sketches (the summarize Proust contest and the semaphore version of "Wuthering Heights" are two of my favorites) so funny.

Glad to hear the news about November dates.
-
Back from some chicken tenders and tap tap tapioca pudding. I originally ordered a cup of chili and a sandwich, but the chili out of nowhere had beans - apparently a problem today in the kitchen - so sent it back, canceled the sandwich and did the chicken tenders.
-
Picked up one package.

Page two? Still?

TOD:
SCTV: So many highlights-- "Indira" (a la Evita) (played by Andrea Martin) co-starring Slim Whitman; Rick Moranis imitating Merv Griffin doing his show as a "special edition" directed by Steven Spielberg and co-hosted by HAL9000; "The Godfather" parody in which John Marley plays a Leonard Bernstein-type conductor who has a talking horse and who is "punished" by Guy Caballero (Joe Flaherty) for refusing to give Johnny Pavarotti (John Candy) a part in his new movie, etc.
THE BOB NEWHART SHOW: Another set that really has helped lift my gloom clouds. Another ensemble cast that seems to genuinely get along and has a feel for each other's talents. Bill Daily is an underrated sidekick. For me, he's a jazz musician (which I think he was) who knows how to add a riff here and there in his scripted part. Just as he did in "I Dream of Jeannie", but in a more realistic setting, though no less surreal.
GREEN ACRES: I just love how more and more absurd this show became. Not every episode fired on all cylinders, but there were real gems. I often wonder if the secondary players got along well with Eddie Albert and Eva Gabor. There were some interesting guest stars on that show. It must have been strange to see William Sylvester (Dr. Heywood Floyd in Kubrick's 1968 film 2001) on Green Acres in 1969!
-
Well, I got all my time in (and then some ::) ) for the week, so I'm leaving work for the rest of the day! I don't know what I'll do with myself until I have to be at the theater, other than lunch.
Have a good rest of the day, all!
-
But before I go...
3HREE!!

Loved Bill Daily on Newhart and I Dream of Jeannie. The jazz analogy is really accurate. He had his own rhythms and they were funny.

TOD:
I've been listening to Bert Kaempfert and his Orchestra. Didn't know until recently that he had signed The Beatles first back in their Hamburg days.
As a corollary, I have also been listening to Al Hirt. Ya gotta love Hirt's all-out horns-to-the-wall rendition of Milton DeLugg's immortal "Hooray for Santy Claus" which, for the uninitiated, is the title theme from that one-of-a-kind yuletide classic, Santa Claus Conquers The Martians. He wails his horn so hard that he could have popped his eyes out or blown out a few stitches at least. I can't imagine not having had a headache after that recording session. The song is fun though, even though once you have heard it, you'll have a lot of difficulty not humming it uncontrollably, and that's not always fun.
[Kaempfert and Hirt both recorded the song "Java" which was written by Allen Toussaint for piano.]
I guess I've been in a trumpet mood, certainly not that I'm brassy LOL.

Well, the ROBERTA mess gets messier, and the Man From Philadelphia only makes it less easy to negotiate.
Oy! MORE VIBES!

Definitely announcing two titles on Monday, although one of them is not what was originally planned - that one will follow two weeks later, but the one that is substituted, which we got approval on within ten minutes, is really going to appeal to denizens of this here site - the first ever official and complete release of a film musical and a rare one at that. In fact, if you read today's notes you might just be able to figure out which it is.

I'm baaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa aaack!!!!!!!!

Nice! Thanks, DR Ben.

We are off to the liquor store, and then to a friend's house for dinner. Not necessarily in that order.
-
Watched 1968's The Swimmer. Interesting. I think I'll have to read the Cheever short story.
-
Would be interesting to hear Marvin Hamlisch's score separately.

In order to read all the posts on page 3 I had to click on "reply" and then read the most recent posts under the box. Earlier it took me 20 minutes to open page 1 though I could read page 2.

That last post took 9 minutes to work.

I think we will be watching CABARET tonight.
To my surprise I saw 3 baby turkeys on the deck looking into the house. They ran away when I attempted to photograph them.

The best Italian food I've had was in Quebec. It's impossible to get a bad meal in Quebec.

When I was growing up a neighbor family, who were Italian, introduced me to Zito's, which was on Pico Blvd near Veteran. I LOVED their romaine salad with the vinegary dressing. I liked their pasta, too. Sadly, Zito's is no more.
-
Hi, Kevin! How's DC weather? (Need I ask?)
-
If anyone is interested in a somewhat DOWNTON ABBEY-like series, try GRAND HOTEL. It's a Spanish production and not bad, IMO. Available on Netflix streaming.
-
Welcome back to DR Dan M and DC Minnie! Yes, we were worried about you.
-
DR Dan, have you ever tried homeopathy? There are many excellent remedies and the pills are quite tiny. Natrum Muriaticum is a common remedy for depression. You can probably find a 30C potency at Whole Foods or other health food store for under $10.
-
Dan, I hope you're able to surround yourself with laughter and music and all sorts of positive experiences.

TTFN.

Hi, Kevin! How's DC weather? (Need I ask?)
Actually, it's been very nice the last few days. Low humidity and in the low 80's. Very odd for July!

Dan M is back!!!!!
I am so happy and relieved to see you Dan! I have been so worried
Thanks DR vixmom. I'm trying to get through this depression. Your encouragement helps a lot! ;) ;)

Thank you DR Jeanne for the kind words and suggestion. I may give that homeopathic item a try.

Finished one good movie and watching one bad movie.

Loved Bill Daily on Newhart and I Dream of Jeannie. The jazz analogy is really accurate. He had his own rhythms and they were funny.
Yes, I also thought he was great on Newhart.
I would like to get in touch with Mr. Daily, just to thank him for his work through the years. According to Wikipedia, he resides near Albuquerque, NM.
I'd also like to thank Alan Young (Mr. Ed's Wilbur). They both seem like genuinely good people. I don't think that that's an act.
-
A friend brought by a copy of "Jodorowsky's DUNE" which is a very well done documentary as BK said in his previous notes. I find Mr. Jodorowsky extremely interesting as I have never seen any of his movies, just clips and trailers. It's great to see someone remain so vital and vigorous in the autumn of their years. If I ever get to my 80s, I would like to be as active and intelligent as he is. What a loss that he could not get his DUNE made. The documentary shows that elements of his proposed film (Frank Herbert apparently was on board) live on in other SF/Fantasy films from 1975 onward. As much as I have liked about half of David Lynch's oeuvre, his DUNE, even without the studio interference, is pretty awful, no matter the apologists' arguments.
I also started to watch Jodorowsky's "The Holy Mountain" which is quite strange yet visually striking. So far, I think it's more performance art than plot.

Tonight I went to a community discussion on Remembering Flight 232 the 25th anniversary of the plane crash here. It was really quite fascinating. There is clearly a close bond between the survivors and the flight crew and those who helped them. Most of them have been back for a number of anniversaries and although there are occasional tears there are a lot of smiles and laughs and gratitude toward the crew and the community for the response. I feel kind of like I don't belong or I'm watching someone else's reunion, but the group is very welcoming.
-
I gave blood for the 232 drive yesterday, and plan to attend more of the event tomorrow.
-
The message, if there is one, from all the survivors is to live for today, don't be afraid to do what you want to and dream about because you never know what will happen. It's a strange mix of emotion, sad for the 112 who died but celebration of the miracle that 184 lived. SO interesting.
