I'm thinking about purchasing this, simply for the Orff.

That's the set, DR elmore3003, but it isn't quite complete - it's missing a few minor odds and ends.

I am sure that the Orff is available as a single disc.

I think that Ormandy recording of Carmina Burana may have been one of the firsts, if not the first.  He was a wonderful conductor, but I think he, like Reiner, Monteux, Fiedler, Ansermet, and others, may be looked down and perhaps forgotten as well, by trendy au courant critics whose memories are shunted aside by all that knowledge they claim to carry.  I like the work of all these gentlemen.

Yes!  There is a world of wealth to behold in all of their recordings.

Could the Stokowski recording of the Orff have been earlier?  (I didn't discover that one myself till years later.)

Yes. I see you are correct.  Still, that Ormandy set has a lot of appeal.

That 20th Century Classics set should be pretty great, I think.

Alas, it seems Ormandy didn't conduct all three pieces comprising the Trionfi; or if he did, they don't seem to be represented in the catalogue.

No, he only recorded Burana and Catullus. I was intrigued by the complete Tchaikovsky symphonies as well.

Sad news about James Garner.

I always enjoyed watching him; never hate the pleasure of meeting him.

Skip is off being on the panel of an all-day seminar today down on 18th Street at TRU.  The subject seems to be opening numbers and "I want" songs.

I loved the notes today!  Very entertaining.  My very first "classical" recording was the EP 45 RPM of Mr Van Cliburn playing Tchaikovsky's First in B Flat Minor.....I still have it.  Most excellent.

I bought a new rocking chair for my front porch at the Marsh Grocery Store.  The manager sold me the one that he had put together - which was very nice of him to do.

I want to buy a small white table now....since the brown one doesn't match.

elmore, that Moldau is a stereo recording done for RCA years after the one I grew up with, which was on Columbia - being mono, I don't think it will ever get a release.

And yes, that first box you pictured is the Columbia set - the other box is RCA - not sure if he recorded Carmina Burana for both labels, but if so I would seek out the Columbia first.

And there's this 10 CD set -it's pricey but I just found it for more than 50% off, about five bucks a disc.

Happy Sunday, all!

I'm finally crawling out from under a bout f bad food and feeling much perkier.  :)

BK, having been born and raised in Philly, Maestro Ormandy is who I grew up with as well, and he and the Philadelphia Orchestra were my go-to musicians for anything classical. Lucky me.

And I enjoyed Red very much. Great fun! Red 2 is as well, though I found it more action oriented. Great casts having lots of fun together.

Listened to two Saint-Saens concertos - neither much to my liking, but just finished with The Age of Anxiety with Entremont and Bernstein - brilliant.  I have the same performance on another CD but this one blows that apart in every way, sound-wise especially.

Did you son recently get married?

Good afternoon, all.

Spent a relaxing weekend with friends in West Texas in a town called Brackettville. Hadn't been there before. Nice area. They've been having a much wetter summer than normal, so all was rather lush.

Ate, drank, went swimming, slept an awful lot.
