Title: A BROADWAY/HOLLYWOOD CHRISTMAS
Post by: bk on December 02, 2010, 02:16:15 AM
Well, you've read the notes, the notes were Broadway and Hollywood and also Christmas-like, and now it is time for you to post until the Broadway and Hollywood cows come home.

It’s beginning to sound a lot like Christmas — thanks to Bruce’s latest Kritzerland at the Gardenia show last night in West Hollywood. The evening was festive, the venue was packed, the performers were marvelous and, by the end of the night, Bruce had us all singing “White Christmas.”

Highlights were many: Jason Graae crooning “Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas”; Dan Callaway cozying up to Alet Taylor to sing Cy Coleman’s “Lovers on Christmas Eve” from “I Love My Wife”; and Bruce Vilanch cozying up to Jason to sing an uproarious “Baby, It’s Cold Outside.” Since they didn’t know the second verse, they riffed — on everything from the technical problems dogging the new “Spider-Man” musical to Tallulah Bankhead and Esther Williams. Mr. Vilanch, of course, was decked out in one of his famous T-shirts. In the spirit of the season, the red shirt was emblazoned with this message: “I’m not Santa — but you can still sit on my lap.”

“You’re a Mean One, Mr. Grinch” was a cinch for Callaway, who assailed the mountaintop monster’s heart, soul and smile with spiteful glee. It was a show-stopping moment, yes, but like the Grinch, whose efforts to steal Christmas were derailed by a pint-sized pixie from Whoville, Callaway’s shot at stealing the show was stolen by 8-year-old Lucy Taylor, Alet’s dynamo of a daughter, who belted out “That’s What I Want for Christmas” with the power and assurance of a Broadway vet. Not only did Lucy steal the show, she stole the hearts of everyone in the room.

Our beloved Bruce served up “Turkey Lurkey Time” on a non-musical platter, choosing to recite the words instead of singing them. As Bruce fowled, folks howled and everyone was left feeling very loosey goosey.

Next up in the Kritizerland at the Gardenia series will be an evening of Unsung Sondheim with special guest Millicent Martin and a still-to-be-announced cast. It will take place on the second (not the first) Wednesday in January. For reservations, call the Gardenia at 323-467-7444. The show is highly recommended by the likes of this ne’er-do-well lurker.

On this, my first day of vacation I'm still up early. It happened last year as well.

I usually get up without an alarm. It will take a few days to get re-adjusted.

We have to go shopping sometime today.

We have a technician coming on Saturday to fix a problem in our very, very, very, very, very, very, very, very, very, very (that's 10 verys) old radiator. Our apartment is fine but apparently there is a leak from our radiator into the apartment below and it's causing a problem in their ceiling. A part in our radiator must be replaced to stop the leak. We are told once this part is replaced that the problem of overheating (our apartment gets SO hot t hat we never turn on the radiators, the spill from the other radiators in the building being on is enough to heat our apartment and we always have a window open, ask anyone who has visited in the winter months) will be solved.

nice review from DR MARK.

Millicent Martin!

She's done several things, but of course in some quarters she's best known for co-starring with Miss Annette Funicello in THE HORSEMASTERS and standing around looking smart while Annette sings.

Good morning, all!

I've been up  for some time ordering gifts online, locating things, and having some breakfast. I have to stop by the McGlinnventory this morning to pick up some inventory lists for Zak Stains before I head over to Toyland for some Victor Herbert edits.

BK, I'm happy to hear the show went so well. I was thinking how hard now it is to call something "Unsung Sondheim," a truth in 1994, when at this point nothing concerning SS is unsung.

TOD:

Actually, since I'm still pondering hliday and wintery songs, I suppose "Winter Was Warm" really isn't a Christmas song although it comes from a version of Dickens'  "A Christmas Carol."

I also love Gordon Lightfoot's "Song for a Winter's Night."

Most loathesome Christmas song: "The Little Drummer Boy"

Classical Christmas: Berlioz "L'Enfance du Christ"
                               Finzi "In Terra Pax"
Vaughan Williams "Fantasia on Christmas Carols"
                               Holst "Christmas Day"
                               Britten "Ceremony of Carols"
                               Bach "Christmas Oratorio" and Magnificat
Respighi "Lauda per Nativita del Signore"
Although it's a huge Christmas favorite, Handel's "Messiah" is only 1/3 a Chritstmas piece!

DR Jane you asked yesterday if we were having any get togethers for Chanukah.  Well I don't know about any official ones. But my mom and I went over last night and gave some gifts.  And we usually see the kids on Friday, Saturday, Sunday. So will probably just light the candles together and give presents.

Kritzerland at the Gardenia show was wonderful last night! The entire cast was great, of course. I could listen to Jason Graae all day. The set list was a perfect blend of familiar, but not overdone Christmas songs, and lovely songs I've never heard before. The poetic reciting of "Turkey Lurkey Time" was hilarious! I know of other singers that were nicknamed "the little girl with the big voice" and you can now add Lucy Taylor to that list. Funny that Bruce mentioned that Lanny doesn't have lyrics on his chart because when Lucy got stuck, my immediate thought was "Can't someone help her?!" Now I know why she had to start over. I look forward to the Unsung Sondheim show next month.

Morning, all! Congrats to Bruce on the great show!

TOD:

Is it going to come as a big shock to anyone that I don't have too many favorite Christmas songs? Least favorite is easy: I'm with DR Elmore on that "Drummer Boy" abomination (who plays a drum for a BABY? Geez, we're trying to get some sleep here!)...

Besides the sarcastic Christmas songs (Tom Lehrer's "Christmas Carol" and Allen Sherman's "Twelve Days"), I'd have to go with a couple of songs from one of my favorite piano bar personalities, the late D. Jay Bradley, who used to have an annual Christmas-themed cabaret show at Don't Tell Mama's. He wrote "The Colors of Christmas" and "Don't Let Christmas Pass You By," both of which are lovely numbers. Damn, but I miss him...

As for your "Unsung Sondheim" show in January...

-This really isn't a question about the show per se, but...

January and February are traditional very slow months for Broadway, Off-Broadway, cabaret, etc., here in NYC. The winter weather, the dearth of tourists, etc.  Does L.A. go through such a slow down during the Winter months?

We're hoping not.  It's taken four shows, but we seem to have found our audience, and we just hope they'll be there - since the weather will probably be fine, I think, at least for the Sondheim show, be okay.  I was actually worried about attendance for last night's show - but man, it was incredible.  But a week ago, I think we had eight reservations.

I do realize that most Sondheim is known now, but even on Unsung Sondheim and Sondheim at the Movies and even, to a certain extent, on The Stephen Sondheim Album, there are still songs that are VERY infrequently performed - those are what we'll concentrate on, stuff like Make The Most Of Your Music, Multitudes of Amys, some stuff from Singing Out Loud - there's plenty of great stuff to choose from that meets the Unsung criteria.  And I'm sure I'll throw in a couple of the warhorses just to have them.

Just wanted to echo Mark and Amy about how good the show was last night.  I wish I could have bottled it, to enjoy for the future.  It really got me into the holiday mood.

The room was so thick with talent that I personally was probably to sole oasis of non-talent in the room.  To my left, the table was occupied the lady who had Thanksgiving dinner with Bruce (the one who was in the original cast of Promises, Promises) and her husband, who is a former Disney artist.  To my right, the 2 ladies are the executive producers of the Festival of New American Musicals (one of them also founded the Reprise Theatre Company).  And my wife and I were joined at our table by a talented young lady looking for a place to sit, named Rebecca Johnson (http://www.rebeccajohnson.com/).  So the stage was not only filled by talent, but also the audience.  When the final number came, I swear, you never heard a sing-along sound so good.  BTW, my wife, who was sitting next to Rebecca, says that she sings so beautifully that we're making plans to hear her sing the next time she appears at a local supper club in LA, called First and Hope (http://www.firstandhope.com/).

It was an astounding evening of music, but I've come to learn that "astounding" is common-place when Bruce is involved.  I did see an old friend from the Varese days that I haven't seen in over a decade, and we were very happy to rediscover each other.  Frankly, I almost didn't recognize her, because I'd have expected her to age a decade since I last saw her, and she looks exactly the same.

The flax and the water slurry is all you need to replace the egg, so it should taste much better than some Frankenfood egg substitute.

The Spiderman reference got a huge laugh - don't remember exactly what it was.  And then there was a really long volley about Jason being Hollywood and Bruce being West Hollywood, and how the gay Celebration Theater was across the street, and how the gay club The Zone was nearby - then Bruce said "That's where you parked - in the rear."  And that led to a series of jokes that you'll just have to imagine but that were howlers each and every one.

On Black Friday I ordered the blu-ray of Mad Men season three for 9.99 - couldn't refuse.  At least that's what I thought I ordered, but what arrived on Monday was the DVD set.  I wrote them and they said they'd send the correct item and they sent me a shipping label to send back the other, which I did on Tuesday.  Today the replacement arrived - another DVD set.  What kind of brain power is at work there, I wonder.  I just talked to Manila and though it took finally getting REALLY loud and strong, I'm sending this DVD set back, getting a full credit, then they're giving me a twenty dollar credit towards the CURRENT price of 29.99, so that I get it for 9.99.

Had a nice lunch meeting with Doug Haverty and Adryan Russ.  We'll be reissuing their show, Inside Out, on CD with some fun bonus material and better sound.  The off-B'way cast was pretty terrific, and a couple of them have become very well known, so I think we'll do fine with it.

I drove to the upscale mall on the northeast side of Cincinnati to meet a friend for lunch and then I browsed a few stores before heading to the butcher shop near my mom's.  Shopped for her and for our dinner and stopped and visited Mom for a while.  Stopped at Kohl's to buy us a new toaster oven, came home and fixed dinner, and now I'm ready to crash in front of the TV.

If you are going to do UNSUNG SONDHEIM couldn't you just use the score from BOUNCE?

You should see the reaction on the usual boards - acting as if someone saying they'd LIKE to make a movie immediately translates to he's making the movie.  It's a remark - there is no deal, no nothing.

I agree on "Three Ships," though the melody can be nice when properly played. I especially don't care for the throaty, nouveau folk, Idina Menzel-type recordings of it.

Just watched the Sherman Bros DVD - and it was most excellent.....and for the most part I enjoyed the interviews.....the best ones with people who actually KNEW or had WORKED with the boys, as opposed to those who titled themselves Executive Producer......

Still mysterious......but I am thinking that a lot of trouble came for the boys for not following Jerry Lewis advice that he got from Lou Costello that HE got from Stan Laurel.....I am thinking.

Oh... Today's semi-random celebrity sighting...

Emeril Lagasse was at Eataly. We happened to be browsing the "verdure" at the same time. He's apparently cooking some sort of special meal in town tomorrow. He had quite the shopping list with him.

-Frankly, I was sort of surprised he was not choosing to shop at the Union Square Greenmarket (tomorrow morning) or at the Chelsea Market Supermarket which is where a lot of the grocery shopping for the Food Network takes place. ???

So tiiiiired.  Had a long telephonic conversation about some potential upcoming titles - and have been trying to watch Fantasia - I must say I go through this every time there's a new release of this film - but the plain and simple truth is I just don't like it and I suppose I never will.  I like moments, but it just goes on and on and it's not my cuppa.  So, off it goes.
Title: Re: A BROADWAY/HOLLYWOOD CHRISTMAS
Post by: td on December 02, 2010, 08:08:23 PM
Regarding FANTASIA:  I'm in agreement.  There are parts which I can watch over and over again ("Night on Bald Mountain," - but not with "Ave Maria"- "Dance of the Hours" and "The Sorcerer's Apprentice" are tops on my list); but the film, exquisite as the animation is, just goes on and on and on and on for nearly two hours.  I could not tell you when the last time I watched FANTASIA in its entirety in one sitting. . .possibly the deluxe CAV LaserDisc Boxed Set. . . .but that had so many side breaks, you couldn't really call it one sitting. . .

I'm fonder of FANTASIA 2000. . .and I could watch "The Pines of Rome" or "The Steadfast Tin Soldier" almost any time.

For the record, the Blu-Rays of FANTASIA/FANTASIA 2000 are beautiful transfers.

Last night I watched the docu on Dali and Disney and "Destino" and was quite impressed and educated.

The final version of "Destino" is everything and more than I hoped it would be.

td, guess I should put the disc back in and watch the Dali extras - that would interest me.  And while I haven't seen all of Fantasia 2000, I did love the Gershwin sequence.  I'll watch that soon.  I tried to watch this piece of dreck called The Last Airbender by M. Night whatever his name is - this guy has lost his marbles, whatever marbles he had.  And worse, it is the softest blu-ray transfer I've ever seen - I don't know if it gets better after the first twenty minutes, but those minutes verge on being completely out of focus.

About an hour ago, Time-Warner tweeted the following:

"#TimeWarnerCable customers in #SoCal.  Engineers are still working to restore Internet service. I regret that I do not have an ETA yet. ^PS"

And it actually looks like their Help Desk is staying open past their usual business hours until the issue is resolved.

There was a cretin on the Film Score Monthly board - one of these odd obsessives that troll boards like that from time to time - this guy's obsession is Lost Horizon - not the Capra, but the Ross Hunter production, the musical.  Now, even people who find it a guilty pleasure know it's terrible.  I always WANT to like it, but it's terrible, mostly thanks to the ham-fisted and ponderous direction of Charles Jarrott - in fact, I have never seen a Charles Jarrott film that I cared for, but maybe the whole problem rested with Mr. Hunter.  Add to that the horrendously bad choreography of Hermes Pan, along with the weirdly performed but somehow somewhat likable songs and you have one of the most critically-reviled box-office disasters ever.

But this guy LOVES IT!  This guy thinks it wasn't a box-office disaster overseas (it was), this guy thinks it got rave reviews (he managed to find four to post, none of which were raves, but were decent, which just goes to show you - one of the decent ones was by Arthur Knight, the man who HATED The First Nudie Musical, so that puts everything into perspective) - and because I dared to disagree (nicely) with him (as did others)?  He began calling me a bitter soundtrack queen.  Then he stated (in response to someone else who hated it) that Mame was a movie for old ladies and homosexuals.  That comment rankled a whole slew of people.  And then he wouldn't stop - homophobic comments hurled in my direction - I don't mind being called gay or whatever people want to call me, but the moderator was warning him and he still couldn't stop - I finally called him a twit and the moderator asked me not to do it, so I stopped.  But he wouldn't and then he called the moderator a queen.  That was that.  He was banned.  I now have his e-mail address, thanks to friends in high places.  Unfortunately, but predictably, it's a hotmail address, otherwise I could have some fun :)

I suspect anyone who has to make those kinds of gay-baiting comments and who LOVES Lost Horizon The Musical, well, I somehow think he's one of those self-loathing people like Harold in Boys In The Band.  That's my guess, and I'm sticking to it.

Time Warner was completely spazzing out and finally went down - it's up now, though.  In fact, if it hadn't been I was about to grab the laptop and go over to Panera to write and post the notes.  Hopefully, we'll remain working and happy, Time Warner-wise.  I might go over to Jerry's and get some chicken soup for dinner.  I had chicken tenders and fries for lunch at Doug Haverty's house.

Him... our Optimum wireless kept dropping out this evening

Well... I truly am sick and tired. So...

Goodnight.

*Thank You for the continuing Get Well Vibes. I'm sure they'll be working their magic overnight as I sleep in my own bed for the first time in a week and a half.

I don't know if we're out of the woods yet - it's still hiccuping - we can only hope because Panera closes at nine.  If it's after that, then I'd have to actually try writing the notes on an iPad from my car or something - that would be interesting.  Not.  I'm too tired to play THAT game, so let's just hope it holds.

He should be forced to listen to Liv Ullmann sing "All the World Is a Circle" (or whatever that horror was called) on replay for 3 months of solitary confinement.

Well all I can say is thank god I made it through this week.  It wasn't easy.   I'm still way behind at the office, but I was so stressed out this week I just hit a point where I had to get done what HAD to be done and leave it at that. I'm really looking forward to this weekend.  I may work at the office part of the time when phones aren't ringing and people aren't coming in and I'm not supposed to be in 4 different places.  I have writing to do and I need quiet to do it.

Today I got a haircut.  That helped me feel better.  Last night I got 7 1/2 hours of sleep.  that helped too.   I need to go to sleep now.  Edith's husband is a HVAC guy and he's coming in the moringing to service my furnace and to fix the outdoor intake and out put vents so they don't clog up with snow and  kill the furnace in the middle of the coldest night of the year like last year.

Metropolis, a film made in 1927, looks sharper than the transfer of The Last Airbender.
