Thank you, TCB, for stepping up to the plate.  As it were.

One question:

What do we do if we don't know "Beat Me Daddy Eight to the Bar"?

Then you can't eat them.

DR Elmore, I knew you'd have a recording to recommend!  Amazon shows several from HGO - can you post a picture of the one I should get?

I grew up with the Price / Warfield version, so it remains my favorite.

Same here.  Actually, I grew up on the original 3-LP Columbia set (Engel?), but when I discovered the Price/Warfield (Skitch!), I thought I'd died and gone to heaven.  It's almost a cliche to say it, but I always wished they'd recorded the entire piece.

Interesting!  Amazon.com list Leotyne Price as the conductor?

Leontyne Price (Conductor)

Oh, and sorry, I  forgot that this was not a complete version, just highlights.

But not just "songs".  A couple of extended scenes, which made it even more valuable a document.

How good was the Cleveland Orchestra PORGY?  I remember being thrilled when it came out because it was the first complete recording, but don't recall anything about how it sounded or what they did with it.  I'm guessing it ranks well below the Houston.  Any other worthy ones out there?

It's like an oratorio compared to the HGO theatricality.

Been a long day already for me.  A series of intense thunderstorms with loads of lightning barrelled through, starting at about 3:30 this morning and repeating at half hour intervals.  Another one hit when it was time for me to wake up for work and the lightning was bad enough that I didn't dare take a shower.  They finally let up by the time I arrived at the train station.

Normally, storms like this come at the end of heat waves and bring in nice weather.  These storms are acting in the opposite, bringing in high humidity and temps in the upper 90s.  Ugh!

I have yet to hear any PORGY AND BESS recording that nears the Houston Grand Opera set.

I don't even plan on buying the CD of what's currently playing on B'way.

Not true...if you can whistle "I Wish I Could Shimmy Like My Sister Kate" in 6/8 time, the noodles will come out just as well!

Dan(theMan), what a discerning critic you are!

I've made fixes to DEAREST ENEMY based on yesterday's Dublin phone call, finished the laundry, vacuumed, and I am thinking about lunch. Eggs or shrimp and broccoli?

I always liked what Ella Fitzgerald and Louis Armstrong did with "Porgy and Bess." But I do have the HGO version. And the one with Todd Duncan.

I'll have to look to see if I have that one.  I do have the original LP set of the Duke Ellington / Mel Torme version, which I haven't listened to in, like, forever.

I have THIS recording of Porgy & Bess:

I haven't listened to it since I got it.  Is it any good...as compared to other recordings?

elmore, I just saw it - I actually forgot it was going up today, and then I got an e-mail from Cary Mansfield at Varese, who'd read it and sent me the link.

Album Produced By just got an incredibly generous and loving review from The Second Disc: http://theseconddisc.com/2012/06/29/review-album-produced-by-more-of-my-roller-coaster-life-by-bruce-kimmel/
