In my CD player (and burner):  both the German and Japanese cast recordings of Wicked. :)

In my DVD player:  nothing yet.  Wednesday night, I watched "Caprica" that I got from Netflix, and returned it yesterday, so I should get the next disc either Saturday or Monday.  It's a two-fer, "Murder at the Vanities / Search for Beauty" that was discussed here a while ago.

An old friend (the one I mentioned earlier who now lives in Richmond and runs the Mystery Dinner Theatre) is coming to town for his 25th Wedding Anniversary (his wife will be with him;) We will see Jim and Laura at some point and then on Sunday I'll be busy at Radio City Music Hall.

My work project today is going to be pretty simple: BERGMAN'S ISLAND which I have already watched. I'll just spot check the disc to make sure it works and looks the same as the one I watched last night. But I will have to write up a full review this afternoon since I only wrote a brief little summary as part of my lengthier review of THE SEVENTH SEAL.

Don't get your hopes up for the transfer of BROKEN ARROW. It's not in the top tier of Blu-ray transfers. I was disappointed with it, especially since the film has always been a popcorn thriller favorite of mine.

Michael Dale on ATC was kind enough to post the parody lyric to the best of his memory for those who need to sing along:

"I remember snippets from when D Jay Bradley would sing it at Don't Tell Mama:

Phylicia Rashad

Phylicia Rashad
She plays the mom, Bill Cosby plays the dad.

She's the sister of Debbie Allen
She's the sister of Debbie Allen
She's the sister of Debbie Allen

And catching up from yesterday...

I "played" a dance rehearsal for Phylicia Rashad's sister once.  I was a three hour call.  She started the warm-up.  She started talking to the dancers during the warm-up.  Then we had a break.  Once the break was over, she continued talking (trash) with the dancers.  Another break. She started to demonstrate a dance step, which one of the dancers recognized from a past project, which, of course, led to more talking about said past project. Time!

I don't think I played a single note on the piano that whole time.

That must mean he values you guys as tenants.

That, and "the board" - which, we think is only comprised of the property manager's father - knows that there is a glut of cheaper (and better) apartments on the market right now.  We shall see.

In any case, it will nice to spend this coming weekend without this (figuratively) hanging over our heads like the dark clouds that are (literally) over our heads in NYC right now.

DR Jose re: SO YOU THINK YOU CAN DANCE.

What did you think of it?

I was so annoyed in the middle of wed's show as i gather were many many others re: natalie.
That was just crap.  I also felt so bad for alex the ballet dancer. But he probably should have found that out first. And i agreed with mary murphy re: natalie's friend, the black guy whose name escapes me right now. He was so good. ANd mia and little c were being so rude to him!

I love the Vegas shows. BUt they are always disappointing because so many people we end up loving from the auditions get cut for no apparent reason. And there are probably 10 people who made it who i have never seen before. What is that about???

With the way they edit these shows -- and with the time limits for these shows -- it's hard to really know who should be in the Top 20 cause they don't show and/or feature everyone.  Mia had gotten on that guy in an earlier critique, so I'm wondering if he did something to tick her off during the rehearsals of the dance she choreographed in Vegas -- and it sounded like it wasn't so much his dancing but his attitude for her (she used some word like cocky or arrogant when getting on him -- and when it was announced he had enough votes to go into the Top 20, she made a comment about seeing what happens when they get into the same room together -- makes me wonder if he didn't do her steps the way she wanted or somehow insulted her sensibilities) and Lil' C has never come across as mean spirited before (whereas Mia can be a crumudgeonette at times) so maybe the guy has some 'tude (dare I say diva) issues they didn't like -- or ...

more likely it was scripted to create some drama and some hype for the guy (maybe he's the one they're gonna pimp this year -- like Debbie Allen's student last year that they kept gushing over and saying after each time he danced that he was Debbie's student -- so maybe they think if they reverse the tactic and  make it look like Mia's picking on him, the public will become protective of him and vote for him)  ... hey, I'm just saying ...

reality is in the eye of the editor, I mean,  producers!

Jose, I get conflicting stories about a fee for the actors - first someone told me yes, but the reading that follows us says no and they're under the same contract.  I actually think that the latter is correct when not charging admission - which we're not - if you charge, then you pay $100 per actor, which we're doing anyway.

This morning's adventure - they began working at seven - loud yammering from the whole crew, hammering, some sort of repeated noise as if they were tamping the ground with a machine.  I took it as much as I could and got up at seven-thirty.  The minute my foot hit the floor the noise stopped - I kid you not.  I walked into the other room and noticed it was drizzling outside.  I went back to bed.  The work was stopped but the yammering continued, but I finally fell asleep and slept until the phone rang at nine-thirty.  It's still gray out and I probably won't chance the long jog, since it's raining over the hill and may find its way up here.

I thought she was a really good Anita in the 1980 WEST SIDE STORY revival, but that doesn't mean she's any more a good choreographer than her sister is a good actress. She was absolutely pathetic in the glorious WINTER'S TALE at Lincoln Center last year. Yet they work.

I'm too tied up in the total idiocy of this AS THE WORLD TURNS plot involving the most incompetent police forces in several states, the most moronic attorney looking for her client's baby who can't recognize the kid hen she comes upon it and failing at every legal possibility to reunite the kid with her mother, a woman incapable of taking any action who does nothing but whine, and so many coincidences that Charle Dickens would blush! The writers for this show get paid for such incompetent writing?

Bad news:  He ended up needing a quintuple bypass and the doctors found scar tissue indicating several (yes, several) previous heart attacks.  Ed has been looking rather frail lately anyway, and I hope and pray this isn't the beginning of the end.  Betsy is very, very close to her parents and I'm not sure she's emotionally prepared for this transition.

Debbie Allen:

I remember her from a time when some of you were not even born; I lived in Canada then and she was in a nice little TV show called "Three, Girls, Three" and she was very good and cute as a rosebud.

So, not being exposed to her as you may be, I don't have any reason to "hate" her as much as you do!

And I "loved" FAME; movie and TV series!

You ALLL had to know that!  :)

Katharine Hepburn's delicious family brownie recipe: Take Five

There aren't many people I know - or care to know - who don't welcome adding another brownie recipe to their collection. This one, attributed to silver-screen legend Katharine Hepburn, appears on Epicurious.com with the following note: "The best recipe I have for brownies comes from a friend who got it from a magazine article about Katharine Hepburn. It is, apparently, her family's." If you're looking for something simple to take to the next cookout, or just to pass around after a weeknight supper, this fudgy treat is a good bet.

Katharine Hepburn's Brownies

Makes 8 servings

1 stick (8 tablespoons) butter
2 squares unsweetened chocolate
1 cup sugar
2 eggs
½ teaspoon vanilla
½ cup all-purpose flour
¼ teaspoon salt
1 cup chopped walnuts (optional)

Cook's notes: After this recipe appeared on the Web site epicurious.com, readers offered the following variations. If after trying the recipe you find that it's too sweet, next time include an ad ditional half-square of baking chocolate - "That will cut the sweetness and will increase the in tensity of the chocolate," the reader wrote. An other commented that if you prefer a fudgier brownie, reduce the baking time. "After 40 min utes of baking, these are like cardboard. I find that 20-25 minutes [depending on the size of the eggs] produces a chocolaty brownie with a moist, velvety texture. If you were not im- pressed by the original recipe, I recommend a second try with this adjustment."

Preliminary: Heat oven to 325 degrees. Butter and flour 8-inch square baking pan; set aside.

Prepare the batter: Melt together 1 stick butter and 2 squares unsweetened chocolate and take the saucepan off the heat. Stir in 1 cup sugar, add 2 eggs and ½ teaspoon vanilla, and beat the mixture well. Stir in ¼ cup all-purpose flour and ¼ teaspoon salt. (In the original recipe, chopped walnuts are added here.)

Bake the brownies: Scrape mixture into the pre pared baking pan in preheated oven for about 40 minutes.

Presentation: You can cut these brownies into squares, once they have cooled, and eat them out of the pan, but it is so much nicer to pile them on a fancy plate. If you want to smarten up your act, you can put a square of brownie on a plate with a little blob of créme fraiche and a scattering of shaved chocolate.

I began my afternoon viewing with last night's ROYAL PAINS. I enjoyed all three "cases" he tended to, but I was beginning to despair when all of these bodacious babes started flinging themselves at him. I hoped it wasn't going to be that kind of series - eligible doctor fighting off women by the handfuls, but with the suggestion that he's found the woman he'll inevitably be linked to on the series, that should free up most of the running time to the personalities of the people he's treating and how he treats them.

I really enjoyed the first episode apart from those vixins out to trap a rich doctor.

A year ago, my car CD player began eating CDs and then broke completely.  The radio still works, but I've basically been without music in the car for a year now - which makes everything very difficult as I never catch up on my listening and I am always stuck proofing CDs in the house.  Today, after a year, I finally did something about it.  I got a new player and radio - I had no idea how cheap this stuff is now and the new radio/player has a cord for my iPod, so I can have that in the car, too.  The whole thing, with installation, was under $160.  They installed it in twenty minutes.  And now I have music in the car again.

Do you think there is any chance that Brent and Guy Haines could do a duet on the Holiday CD?

The music in the elevator here is Phantom of the Opera.   I know why, you can see it here, but I am so sick of it....AHHHHHH!

The production of PHANTOM at The Venetian is wonderful.  92 minutes, no intermission, and all those extra verses are gone.  Plus the theater and the chandelier are incredible.

It was a lot better when the WSMA was in it, but most things are.
Hmmm, something to think about

I agree, TCB. Plus, I have a friend in the show, so he has arranged awesome seats for us a couple of times.

How could I not follow those recommendations?   I just called and got a second row center mezz seat for tomorrow night at 7:00 PM.  Our Saturday night closing party doesn't start until 9:00 PM, so I can still go to that if I want to.   Cool beans.  The ticket seller told me this seat has a fabulous view of the chandelier.    Thanks for suggesting it

Honestly Cilla, I think you will love it.  At least, I hope you do.  I doubt seriously that I would ever go see PAHNTOM OF THE OPERA on Broadway again, but I would go see PHANTOM in a heartbeat.  And Anthony Crivello is wonderful (and a Tony Award winner).

Frankly, the only time I saw Phantom of the Opera was when it was in Des Moines on tour and I was there for a meeting.   I'm glad I got the ticket.  I'm sure I'll love it and I don't even have to go outside to get to the theater, lol.

It's really strange to think I've only been outside once since I got here....well other than going to the pool.  Last night at dinner seemed like we were outside, but of course we really weren't

Time to head to the fundraiser and award dinner for Carlos Santana and Cirque de Soleil (sp?)  Santana is being honored for his foundation for migrants and Cirque de soleil....hmmm I guess just because they are who they are... I'll have to get back to you on that one.   I'll try to get photos, but they had to move this to the largest ballroom, so I'm guessing there will be tons of people there.    Better go

There are some pretty great deals right now.  We got a conference discount rate, but the place definitely isnt' full, so you may want to check on specials.

I just watched Minnelli's version of MADAME BOVARY; Van Heflin's not boorish enough and I have no idea why [le docteur[/i] Bovary's humiliation in mangling Hippolyte's clubfoot and having t amputate was so drastically changed in Minnelli's film.  The best sequence is the waltz with the crashing windows and the whole sense of frenzy catapulting into insanity. Jennifer Jones certainly does make obvious a lot of Emma's madness!

I think,  on the whole, I like the Chabrol version and the BBC one with Francesca Annis more.

Next on the Minnelli role: THE BAD AND THE BEAUTIFUL!

Had to go back to the stereo place - couldn't find the remote.  The owner kept insisting I had to have it, and I knew I'd seen it, but it wasn't in the car and it wasn't in the box, the only two places it could have been.  I drove over there, and his workers went through the car and the box - they couldn't find it.  He opened a new box and gave me the remote, telling me he was sure I'd find it and to please bring it back when I did.  As I was about to answer, his worker came in, sheepishly holding the remote.  He found it in the trash can - apparently they'd dropped it and it got swept up and deposited in the trash can.  So, all's well that ends well.

Time for me to head home for a short while.  Tonight we're have a cast party for "Romeo & Juliet" and I have a pecan pie that I'm bringing. :D Hopefully, I can get my e-mail set up on my new computer tonight (I think I can just copy all the Outlook Express files from my old computer...I've done that before) and then I'll be all set!

Have a good rest of the evening, all!

I know that it is Friday night, but I am heading to bed to watch the Mariners play - not in my bed (damn), but on the television.  And just in case Mr. Barnum should drop by this evening, I wanted to let him know that the Mariners have gotten their Aussie pitcher back off of injured reserve.

Yes, that waltz scene in MADAME BOVARY is unquestionably the best sequence in the movie. And that fabulous neurotic waltz is one of the GREAT pieces of underscore for a movie.

Well, bk, I liked the Blu-ray of BECKET more than you did. Yes, I noticed some rather bad color fluctuations late in the film, but much of it was beautifully colorful and sharp. I'm guessing those elements they had to work with were probably not top notch.

The Dolby Digital 5.1 sound wasn't lossless. The lossless track was the 2.0 stereo track

The other night on one of the pay cable channels (I think it was Showtime), they were showing THE ROAD TO BROADWAY documentary, and I caught about 10 minutes of it, so tonight, after I watched BECKET, I fished the disc out of my show shelf and watched that again tonight. I really like all of the film except for the smug critics' roundtables. They were a complte turnoff.

It more or less - sometimes more, sometimes less - rained the whole time I was out today.  However, since I spent a good amount of time indoors, as well as a good amount of time outdoors, umbrella in hand, it was a pretty good day.

DR Arnold Brockman - Thanks for the heads-up on that "Tagged" email.  However, could you double-check with your friend to make sure he has removed you - and us - from his email list.  "Tagged" has a bad "habit" of sending out "reminder" emails if the previous email does not get answered/responded.

So...

It was nice playing auditions again today.  The session was held at Ripley-Grier, and I realized it was the first time I had been in there months.  There have been times when I've been there four to six days a week, so today felt almost like a homecoming.  I also appreciated that the guy down at the security desk still remembered me - I didn't have to take out my ID to get into the building.  :)

As for the auditions themselves...

The third person to come in was a young woman with whom I worked a couple of years ago.  She played one of the daughters in The Human Comedy.  It was great seeing her again.  And it was nice to see and hear that she's continued to work on her singing.

After each person finished singing, the director asked them what was coming up next for them.  One young gentleman said that he just finished school, and that he had just begun looking for an apartment in The City...  What was that?  So, he'll either be coming by tomorrow or Sunday to take a look at the apartment. :)

And then a former intern came in the room saying that he just started looking for an apartment...  And he'll also be stopping by this weekend to check it out. :)

Jose, I get conflicting stories about a fee for the actors - first someone told me yes, but the reading that follows us says no and they're under the same contract.  I actually think that the latter is correct when not charging admission - which we're not - if you charge, then you pay $100 per actor, which we're doing anyway.

Do your workshop contracts make any differentiation when it comes to offering or not offering the "right of first refusal" for future productions to the actors?

Today's culinary highlight - The "Sour Gummy" Soft Serve Ice Cream at Momofuku Bakery & Milk Bar (http://www.momofuku.com/bakery/default.asp).  Truly one of the most "fascinating" flavors of ice cream I've tasted and enjoyed.  I also sampled the other flavors that are available this week: Fireball, Red Licorice and Chocolate Mint.  I swear, Christina Tosi is part baker and part magician.

Funny enough - I met the orangutan Clyde from EWWBL at one of my parents' St. Patrick's Day parties when we were still living in Texas.  I must have been 5 or 6 at the time.  Clyde was owned by a friend of my dad's who owned an animal park there in Clifton.

He knew various tricks and such, so one of them involved a volunteer.  Me being who I was, I volunteered (the intended effect I think) as I went to go sit in a chair as I was directed and Clyde pulled the chair out from under me.  Everyone else thought it was hilarious, but I was so embarrassed, I just sat there on the ground, crying.

And every since then, I had a chip on my shoulder for Clyde.

It's a staged reading contract - the workshop rules don't apply.

Just got the latest Kritzerland test site and it's all working perfectly.  All the paypal is there and I ordered a CD and the shipping is now a total breeze.  I don't know what it was like when the webgal created the site, but the machinations for the International shipping were ridiculous (just look at the extant site and read the International shipping page - insanity personified.  Well, it's now so easy and effortless to do for our overseas friends - you actually cannot do it incorrectly.  I'm so happy about the new site and can't wait for you all to see it.

As per the Equity Staged Reading Guidelines, 2) Rehearsal hours are limited to a maximum of 15 hours (20 hours for musicals) for rehearsals and actual Reading(s), such times to be at the Actor’s convenience. If the total hours for the rehearsal(s) and Reading(s) extend beyond the specified number of hours previously listed, but no more than 29 hours, then each Equity Actor is to receive a stipend of $100.00 in addition to basic transportation reimbursement.

Since we are in that sweet spot of 20-29 hours, we pay the stipend.
