Well, you've read the notes, the notes were August-like, and now it is time for you to post until the August cows come home, which will be in September.  They're funny that way.

PIC FROM YANKEE-OZ

An as yet unnamed seven month-old Northern Koala joey clings to his mother Tara after emerging from her pouch at Sydney Wildlife World July 31, 2007 in Sydney, Australia. The zoo has recently had three koala's give birth to joeys, who have up until recently been mostly living in their mothers pouches, and suckling on milk. The Northern Koala species - a mammal - is on the vulnerable list of animals in New South Wales.

Oy vey! It's 5 a.m. and I'm just about to go to bed. I just got home about 45 minutes ago from the Q-Do. My friend, Craig, and I stood out on 42nd Street until about 3:00, and then my train was stalled on the tracks for a good 40 minutes. :-\ OY and VEY!

Much fun had tonight. It was great to get to know some of the cast members a little better, get to meet some of the original cast members and winning lots and lots of tickets. Now I know why I don't gamble!

Anyway, I'm about to pass out from exhaustion, so...bon soir!

Quote
By Jay A. Fernandez, Special to The Times

All due credit

The high school ecosystem of "Bratz" -- in the tradition of "Heathers" and "Mean Girls" before it -- can be pretty cutthroat for its striving, self-conscious young female characters. But it's got nothing on the disappointment and scars often waiting for screenwriters who enter a Writers Guild credit arbitration hearing.

Susie Singer Carter ("Cake," "Men in Trees") is the latest in a long line of writers who feels betrayed by the system: "I just experienced the worst month of my career, which by all rights should have been my best," says Carter, an actor and TV writer whose first shot at a produced film credit on "Bratz" was recently denied by the guild's arbitration panel.

Carter was the last writer to work on the project. Hired in early December during auditions, she stayed on as a writer and consultant when production started in February. She even waived her associate producer credit to improve her chances on the writing credit -- and ended up with neither.

To add insult to injury, the film's producers were apparently confident enough in Carter's contributions to the script that they had Lionsgate print the one-sheet posters for the film with Carter's name in first position (followed by ultimately credited screenwriter Susan Estelle Jansen, and Adam de la Peña & David Eilenberg, who ended up with story credit).

As a final consolation, producer Avi Arad wrote a short encomium thanking Singer Carter for "her indispensable contribution" to run at the start of the film's end-credits crawl. But the guild forced its removal from prints (also not the first time that's happened).

"With virtually no grievance process, I feel impotent and vulnerable against a union that I pay dues to protect me," Carter says. "It's mind-boggling."

Thanks to DR CILLA LIZ for the link to DR RODZINSKI's column!!  Lots of fun reading it, and of course HAPPY TIME was one of the shows discussed by William Goldman in his book THE SEASON.

That picture at the bottom of the column was NOT flattering to either of those people....unless they REALLY look like that!  It was kind of scary.

August.....august.  August.

The month of MANY important birthdays and other occasions.

JEANNE EAGELS - Kim is indeed bee-yoo-tee-ful.  But her acting is just embarrassing.  Although her breakdown onstage is always good for a laugh.  Agnes Moorehead ("This girl is an actress!!!") is outrageous as only she can be.

The film is saved for me by the final scenes.....Sidney's choices - or the writer's choices - or the cinematographer's choices (or a combination of the three) make it a haunting few moments.

Funniest Kim Novak line reading: On the telephone - "We're done makin' the moo-vay!"

I did a bad thing last night.

For ONE WEEK I have been listening to El Gallo bitch and bitch about "Round and Round" - I have come in early, I have changed it just for him, I have taken his suggestions (he is a serious NON-dancer, BTW) and been nothing but cooperative with him.

Last night he wanted to talk about it again.  I said (I had already told the director my stance):  The number is done.  You have ALL the steps I am going to give you.  I have done it several times, spent hours on it, changed it for you.  Now you do what is comfortable for you.  I will not work on it again.  It's done.

Good morning, all! And a special howdy and a thank you to DR tomovoz for the package I found in the mail last night when I returned.

I really did not think the move was going to become the Cecil B DeMille epic that it did.  My plan for the day as to assist, let Matthew our office manager who was in charge tell me what needed to be done, and the schedule:
  1.  movers arrive between 2 & 4 since we were told we could not use the building's freight elevator after 5:45.
  2.  move into the new space after 5 pm

So, I got to the office at noon and we finished packing everything we could into cartons and sealing them.  At 3, Matthew called the movers and he was told they would be there in thirty minutes.  At 4, he called again.  They showed up at 4:30!  They backed the truck up to the loading dock and the ass super for the building threw them out, told them that he was closing the dock and they should come back tomorrow.  They parked the truck on the street and the older (early 30's?) came up to tell us the problem.  Matthew and Curtis went down to see the super: part of our deal with the landlord of the building was that we had to be out yesterday.

The jerk super meanwhile had let a UPS truck back up to the dock and we lost our time window.  However, the super told my friends that he'd keep the dock open for $100/hour, and the move began around 5:45.  The poor movers had to park the truck on the street, carry all our possessions from the dock to the street, so we only had three workers.  The fourth had to stay with the truck.  At 6:15, the UPS truck finally left the dock, but the movers didn't move the truck back in to the freight elevator which might have made that part of the move easier.  Matthew left for the new office shortly after while Curtis and I stayed with the movers.

The four movers spoke accented English and Hebrew and they were much better at the job than the company that moved us in 5 years earlier.  The three others were young, early 20s I guess, and Peter was clearly stuck with a moving team minus his expertise.  It's a good thing DR MBarnum wasn't there because he would have been bugging one of them for a date or with inquiries of an older brother.

The ass super cost us 125.00 and I hope our attorney notifies his employers of his behavior and they sack the jerk.

At 7:30, I caught a taxi up to the new office, leaving Curtis to finish the last round with the movers on 14th Street.  I had a large shopping bag with light bulbs, paper towels and other loose items in the office to tote over to the new space.  Around 8:15 the truck arrived and by 9:45 everything was in the new space.  I will go in today around noon to begin the unpacking, pick up the keys I'll need and see what needs to go onto Matthew's next order for the office.

The new space isn't as open as the old, which I miss, but I like the building: we are next door to my accountant, and on the 8th floor are the people with whom I worked for Rodgers & Hammerstein in March and April.  My accountant was leaving his office around 9:30 last night, saw me and stopped in, so I introduced him to Curtis and Matthew.

That was my day.  And then I came home to the bathroom mess.  I was told when I stopped down at my super's door to report the problem that he would be here this morning at 7:30.  It's 8 now and no sign of him.

Perhaps the most charismatic and popular of opera singers, the Welsh bass-baritone has never allowed fame to compromise his artistic ideals. In a Mozart year crowded with commemorative releases, his Mozart arias album was among the very finest offerings. What could easily have been just another “best bits” singalong became in Terfel’s hands a vivid gallery of finely etched characters. His onstage work has ranged from a slimy Scarpia to Sondheim’s Sweeney Todd. Opera has no better ambassador.

DerBrucer - What is your point of view on that excerpt you described as Scriptland?

To me, the operative words seem to be:  "Carter was the last writer to work on the project."  It seems to me that Carter is not the underdog in this, but that the people who came up with the idea, spent years developing and pitching their work, only to have Carter come in and do a (probably very necessary) polish are the underdogs - and the underdogs won the arbitration.  (Reference to the Undrerdog film unintentional.)

A. I posted it to be informative, I did not have a specialized point of view (other that my "suspect" anti-organized labor bias).

B. I agree the facts suggest that Carter is not the "underdog", but at the same time derserves some credit for her artistic contributions.

C. To be the villain of the piece is, surprise, the WGA and their arcane procedures.

D. The WGA's refusal to allow the end credit note of appreciation confirms my belief that they seem to want to wield power for pleasure - and have little patience for compromise.

Good morning!
Happy August!
I finished up July with excellent health news for Mum.
The nodules on her right lung are insignificant, according to the pulmonary specialist who looks like an 8th grader, but if they grow in a three month time span, then they'll biopsy and make any other decisions.
I saw the cat scans, as Dr. Tsai explained everything.  There might be a touch of emphysema, nothing major.
The thyroid, like the liver, is nothing of major concern, in spite of the presence of cysts.
The hernia is treatable and again, nothing of major concern.
So, Mum is in better health than the original scans would lead one to believe.

As for me, I've been working my tail off daily and relaxing at night by working my way through the ESTHER WILLIAMS boxed set and the new MGM MUSICALS boxed set.

AND. . .my accompanist, Matt Brown, and I have been meeting twice weekly and now have a new cabaret  almost set in stone with a bit of new material; I think that there are only three songs which I've performed before.

Now, off to work. . .
Catch you all later. . . .

I bought the London Cast Album of THE PAJAMA GAME.

Edmund Hockridge as Sid is about what you would expect from his name....and his photo....the man has a nose and he can sing through it.  Max Wall as Hines is veddy proper.  Elizabeth Seal as Gladys is VERY strange.  BUT....Miss Joy Nichols as Babe is dee-lightful.  Frank Lawless is also very good as Prez.

This is one of my favorite shows....and I have always enjoyed it.  Of course Miss Doris Day IS Babe Williams, but Miss Nichols is my next favorite.  Miss Janis Paige is fun....and I always thought her notes were written that way....but Miss Nichols rocks.

The tempii on this recording are FAST, especially "There Once Was Man"...whew!!!  Everything that is of course except "Steam Heat" which is pretty damn slow.

I logged in and selected the tickets for Last Starfighter and Brain from Planet X, but as I was checking out it got messed up.  Now I can't log back in and I don't know if I have tickets or not.  I called the number on the website for Ovation Tix and it says it's not a good numner.  S0, I called the Music Festival number and left a message.  I'll keep trying... I hope I didn't totally mess this up

Quote
WOMAN COLLECTED $2M IN WELFARE AS ADOPTED CHILDREN STARVED

WEST PALM BEACH, Fla. —
A Florida woman accused of using aliases to adopt 11 New York children received as much as $2 million in child welfare payments even as she starved, bound and abused them, police said Tuesday.

Investigators initially believed Judith Leekin, 62, had adopted nine children, but authorities in New York said Tuesday that Leekin adopted 11 children in all from New York City's foster care system between 1993 and 1996.

Authorities believe Leekin held the adopted children like prisoners in her Port St. Lucie home, often handcuffing them together and forcing them to soil themselves because they weren't allowed to use the bathroom.

According to the children's services administration, Leekin used aliases to fraudulently adopt the children and had been receiving welfare payments at different addresses and bank accounts until her arrest in July.

Parents who adopt special needs children in New York City can get as much as $55 a day until the child turns 21.
...

I wonder how many people over the years saw all kinds of hints of this abuse and turned away because it was "none of my business".

Someone (DR DerBrucer maybe?) referred to me as "lapsed" last evening.  Since my family isn't Catholic, which is how my family in my memories used the descriptive word, I'm not sure the word is totally correct, but it certainly is a better term to describe my feelings about the Vatican mafia and its narrow mind!  Off the soapbox now.

I enjoyed Rodz's Leading Man column!

Daniel C. Levine was also mentioned. I saw him years ago in the Off-Broadway show, THE GOREY DETAILS. (I am an Edward Gorey fan so I couldn't pass that up.) Daniel played THE DOUBTFUL GUEST, and when he "fell to the floor", he sliced his face on something and carried on the rest of the scene bleeding  until he could get off stage and get bandaged up. I was so amazed that he finished the show that I sent him a get-well card!

Nice to see he now has a list of impressive credits. He obviously has a good work ethic!

Did anyone else watch FOLLOWING SEAN (http://www.pbs.org/pov/pov2007/followingsean/) on PBS last night?  I have a vague recollection that this documentary was discussed here a while back but I haven't turned anything up in my searches.

In any case, it is a wonderful piece.  A film maker (Ralph Arlyck, who I honestly never heard of before) catches up with a man who he had interviewed as a four year old back in 1969 when they both lived on Haight Ashbury in San Francisco (the original interview was turned into a short film that evidently raised some hoo-ha because of some of they things that they young boy talked about.)  The doc traced not only the lives of the grown-up boy and his family but also of the film maker, himself.  I was channel hopping and caught it about ten minutes in but I was completely hooked.  Unfortunately, it doesn't look like it's going to be repeated any time soon.  I'm going to check to see if it's available on DVD.

If you ate a warm Levain's double chocolate cookie and then played the piano, it might soon be difficult to tell the white keys from the black!

What if he are Levain's black-and-white cookies?

What if he are Levain's black-and-white cookies?

Levain doesn't make Black-And-White cookies.  However, I do like the ones from Zabar's.  And then there are the ones from Crumbs.  Instead of the usual chocolate and vanilla glazes, they frost their cookies with the same icing they use for their cupcakes - buttercream!  Talk about decadent!

Pull out the t-shirts,
Turn down the thermostats for air conditioning.
Get out the ice cream,
It may not help much but our brows are glistening now-

For we need a little August,
Right this very minute.
Heat index of ninety,
Cream with sun-block in it
Yes we need a little swim suit,
Picnicking and laughter,
We need a little August now!

Love it!

Didn't know if those of you who send parcels frequently through USPS were aware:

Due to heightened security, the Postal Service™ is revising standards for depositing mail bearing only postage stamps as postage. Currently, all Priority Mail, International Mail, and APO/FPO mail bearing only postage stamps as postage and weighing 16 ounces or more may be:

*    Presented to an employee at a Post Office™.

*    Picked up by a mail carrier during a delivery stop or during a scheduled stop made to collect other mail not subject to a pickup fee.

Effective July 30, 2007:

*   All mail bearing only postage stamps as postage and weighing more than 13 ounces must be presented to an employee at a Postal Service retail service counter for acceptance. This mail may not be deposited in collection boxes or lobby drops.

*    Carriers will no longer pick up any mail weighing more than 13 ounces bearing only postage stamps as postage from customer mailboxes or at a business’ outgoing mail collection point.

*    Mail bearing only postage stamps as postage and weighing more than 13 ounces that is not presented to an employee at a Postal Service retail service counter will be returned to the customer.

If you have any additional questions, please call 800-ASK-USPS or contact your local postmaster.

And the word of the day is: ONIOMANIA!

Not that anyone around these here parts would know what THAT means!
Sigmund's favorite cure for ONIOMANIA was to hypnotise his patients and suggest to them that the only purchases they wanted to make were of garlic, leeks, scallions, Vidalias and other members of the lily family.  The patients didn't necessarily stop their overspending habits, but he was rewarded when they paid him with plenty of freshly made soup.

I have been laid low.

Yes, I have been knocked down with a bout of allergies.  The weeds that grow in our neighborhood are blossoming, and they are playing havoc with my nasal passages, sinuses and throat.

Fortunately, today is my day off from work, so I'm enjoying the drowsy side effects of the allergy medication I've been taking.

The down-side is that I've been snoozing instead of finishing Harry Potter and the Headly Dallowths.  I'm sure that der Brucer is frustrated by this, because he wants to discuss the book and doesn't want to spring any spoilers upon me.

I've only three or four more chapters to go, so the question is - do I finish them now, or torture him by dawdling?

Even with the allergies, life is good.

Little Billy had a birth defect, he only had one eye. His family didn't have money for a fancy prostheses, so the Doc fixed him up with a nice painted WOODEYE.

So the High School dance came up, and Billy was hanging around hoping for a dance. He was feeling bad, and then he saw little Suzie with the CLEFT PALATE all by herself.

Billy walked over and asked "Suzie, would you like to have a dance?"

Suzie was terribly excited, and cried out "Would I? Would I? Would I?"

Billy gnashed his teeth, kicked at the dirt, and blurted out "Harelip, harelip, harelip!"

All this is for a routine test tomorrow.  The last time I did this I was sick for two days, I’m so damn sensitive.

I really enjoyed DR Rodzinski's Playbill column this time because I've always been a big fan of Michael Rupert's. I saw him in THE HAPPY TIME and was so impressed with him being so dynamic and being able to more than hold his own with veterans like Robert Goulet and David Wayne at such a young age. I remember feeling a little ill the night he didn't win the Tony Award for his performance (Hiram Sherman won for HOW NOW DOW JONES). I loved his delighted surprise and genuine disbelief when he did win almost 20 years later.

New NYC picture-taking rules proposed:

NY TIMES (http://www.nytimes.com/2007/07/28/nyregion/28film.html?ex=1343275200&en=63ba48d319a23d19&ei=5090&partner=rssuserland&emc=rss)

Quote

The new rules, which were proposed by the Mayor’s Office of Film, Theater and Broadcasting, would require any group of two or more people who want to use a camera in a public place for more than 30 minutes to get a city permit and $1 million in liability insurance. The same requirements would apply to any group of five or more people who plan to use a tripod in a public location for more than 10 minutes, including the time it takes to set up the equipment. The permits would be free.

Officials have said that the rules are not intended to apply to tourists or amateur filmmakers or photographers.

But the language of the regulations does not include specific exemptions for amateurs, and critics have warned that vague phrasing could lead to inconsistent and perhaps discriminatory enforcement.

Some opponents say the cost of insurance required under the rules would burden independent filmmakers and photographers with limited budgets. City officials said that if the proposed rules were adopted, insurance could be waived in some cases for those who could not afford it.

Sounds like an Insurance agency's full-employment bill.

I ache all over.  Too many cartons dragged and carried and unpacked today; too much climbing up and down a stepladder; I'm too old for this!  So, I came home and took a hot bath.  I'm now having some fried rice and wonton soup.  I think I will be in bed early.  Alone, alas.

Excellent! How soon is SAVING GRACE being pulled?  Of course, I'm amazed that MONK is still on.

There are no plans to pull the show---it's still getting good ratings and the viewership increased despite so many complaints about it. I haven't been able to catch a whole episode yet, but I've had a hard time understanding  some of the dialogue I have heard. And the premise doesn't interest me that much.

OK, I'm off to try and mow the huge yard at the new house. I hope I don't regret it! I'm going to empty the grass bag before it gets too full and heavy, like I usually do.

We have to put clippings in paper bags and haul them up to the street. I'm just hoping I don't mow over another yellow jacket nest, like I did the last time I mowed. Ow!

I have spent a horrifying forty-five minutes on the phone - being strong, being loud, and probably being a little offensive, all to do with this ongoing funding of the fundraiser, which should have been done by now.  I'm now no longer certain that this show that we've all been working on for three months  will happen at all, and if it doesn't happen, I'm afraid the alumni association will go into the toilet if our opening salvo is a complete failure and disaster.  Doesn't exactly speak well of my capabilities, even though none of it is my fault - I was promised the funding, everything was agreed to in a meeting two months ago, I did everything I was asked to do and here we are in a quagmire of beaurocracy, which is why I gather the president doesn't want to be there anymore.  He is still assuring me that it will happen and that his committment to me will be honored - I'm glad he's sure, because I'm sure not sure.  He's now saying that even if it has to be treated as a loan it will get done.  I told him at this point whatever it is it is - and if we have to pay the dough back from ticket sales then we'll do that - of course our organization will then probably not make any money, but at least we won't look like complete losers - plus I'm still trying to get corporate sponsorships and those would, at least, put a little in our coffers should we have to pay back the funding.

This is not making me a happy camper right now and I HATE having these conversations.  I may have to go down to LACC tomorrow morning to hash this out some more.  I now have a raging headache.

Good Evening!

...So after running around midtown for a bit taking care of some errands, I decided to explore a bit of Koreatown.  -Well, Koreatown in Manhattan is basically 33rd Street between 5th and 6th Avenues.  However, there's a lot of stores, restaurants, lunch counters, etc., crammed into that strip.  I found the kim-bop place that just got a write-up in the Times, as well as a new Korean buffet.  -Oh, and some new bar/restaurant that seemed to have items on its menu from all over the globe: Italian appetizers, Japanese entrees and German desserts.  ???  It looked like a nice place, however.

Yes it's been very hot, not sure if Minneapolis has been as hot as here. It sounds like the construction may have a contributing factor.

In the Ordway in St. Paul, the balcony is a good spot for that show.  Ordway also had great acoustics.

For DerB

A wife was making a breakfast of fried eggs for her husband. Suddenly,
her husband burst into the kitchen.

"Careful," he said, "CAREFUL! Put  in some more butter! Oh my gosh! You're cooking too many at once. TOO  MANY! Turn them! TURN THEM NOW! We need more butter. Oh my gosh! WHERE  are we going to get MORE BUTTER? They're going to STICK! Careful.   CAREFUL! I said be CAREFUL! You NEVER listen to me when you're cooking! Never! Turn them! Hurry up! Are you CRAZY?   Have you LOST your mind? Don't forget to salt them. You know you always forget to salt them. Use the salt. USE THE SALT! THE SALT!"

The wife stared at him.

"What in the world is wrong with you? You think I don't know how to
 fry a couple of eggs?"

The husband calmly replied, "I just wanted to show you what it feels like when I'm driving."

Of course, it's hard to do that when everyone is WUSSBURGERING!

Sorry I wasn't around last night.  It wasn't a good day.  First, I went to the Seattle Storm women's basketball game with my sister.  It was an exciting game...very close...and the lost by four, count 'em FOUR points. :( But a loss is a loss.

But worse than that is that my best friend and co-worker Margo was fired...actually, the official announcement says that her "position was eliminated."  Yeah, right. :P Her supervisor is the HR manager and from the moment he was hired (only a little over a year ago...she's been here for more than 17 years!), he basically treated her like crap.  To those of us who've supported her through all this, the eliminated position announcement is a big joke.  It also said that she is free to apply for any future position in the library district for which she is qualified, but last night before they had the official meeting to tell her all of this, her e-mail AND phone access were cut off AND at the meeting (at 5:00 pm on the last working day of the month), she was told that she was not allowed to ever come back into the building!  What kind of crap is that??  She pretty much knew that it was probably going to happen, but when it actually did, it was still a shock.  She's one of the nicest, sweetest people you could ever meet.  She is truly my best friend.  Now, she has no job and two kids under the age of 12.  Her sister and brother have also been VERY supportive (financially, also), but still, any and all vibes, xylophones and marimbas for Margo will be greatly appreciated!

And of course, today wasn't a day in the park, either.  But, as my former supervisor used to day, "And this too shall pass.''  It's just hell while you're going through it. :-\

Omigod, it's past midnight and I'm just now getting home from working LEGALLY BLONDE...?!?! Color me tired!!

In better news, I made nearly half of my weekly salary in just two shows at BLONDE, so working a double was worth it!

And guess who saw BLONDE tonight and commented on my stellar merchandising skills...? DRs Rodzinski and TPunk! They both look great and had a good time at the show. And they think I'm a Stellar Seller. Ha! I made a funny... or at least it's funny because I'm so pooped.

OH!   Christian Borle He was Not Dead Fred among others... cool I saw him in Spamalot.  He was great fun in it

I Love Christian Borle.  He is so talented.  I first saw him in this strange little off off broadway musical that was imported from Australia, called The Prodigal.  Since then, he's done many things - William Finn's Elegies, The Snoopy benefit concert, Thoroughly Modern Millie, Spam, and Blonde, plus others.  I always find him to shine no matter who else he shares the stage with.  The "I'm not dead yet" stuff was priceless.

I think of it whenever I see her in Grey's Anatomy.  I know I shouldn't, she's a totally different character, but I do anyway

DR Matt H, what did you decide about HOT FUZZ?

I'm going to buy it. My plans were to pair it with something coming out next week so I could get free shipping, but there are no releases next week that I'm interested in buying, so I'll look at other things on sale I can pair with it. I should have it by next week.

Finally got to the end of 8 SIMPLE RULES. The show had a little more humanity toward the end of the season, not quite as shrill and confrontational, but not enough to redeem it in my eyes.

Glad that ordeal is over.

Toward the end of the season, there were a few more guest stars on the show than they had in the beginning 2/3 of the episodes. Shelley Long guested on an episode, and I had to look hard to recognize her. She looked positively emaciated!

Cybill Shepherd played Katey Sagal's sister in the final two episodes of the season. Jason Priestly was also around for an episode.

RESCUE ME had a much more dramatic episode this week. The opening sequence involved a horrific fire in which seven babies were killed. The final image of the episode was also rather horrifying.
