Well, you've read the notes, the notes exposed the Vernal Equinox for what it was, and now it is time for you to post until the cows (moo moo) come home.

The "Pogono Trophy" was one of the Dance competitons in "Strictly Ballroom". Due to the inability of some of the film "extras" to cope with the complex steps - the scenes were cut from the final print. Paul Mecurio is still about in some "Seedy" venues, instructing wouldbe champions in the art of "Pogono" lifts and glides.

It was rumoured that Baz L attempted to introduce Pogono steps in "Moulin Rouge" but before long its was added to a certain star's list of can't act, can't sing and can't dance, and the idea was dropped.

Morning all. I just caught up.

I have a meeting at 3pm. I usually leave at 4pm but this meeting may make my usual leaving time impossible. The meeting has to do with mundane issues of Country Codes and the revision thereof (you don't wanna know). Just because it's mundane doesn't mean it can't be turned into a long, boring, stupid meeting that will take close to or more than the allotted hour. I've been in these types of meetings before. I know whereof I speak.

VIBES to DR CASON on his audition today - you can leave your hat on.

And I THINK that in callbacks involving dis-dress, actors can be asked to remove clothing.  You wouldn't want to get into rehearsals and discover that someone has three nipples or six toes on one foot, now would you?

Re: last night's IDOL.

My favorite was blake.  And i think my second favorite was jordin.  She has really grown on me these last two weeks. Initially i did not like her.

I also thought Chris R did well. But i am not liking him as much as i did in the beginning.

I thought haley was better.  But i still don't know about her. I actually liked what she was wearing.

I think stephanie is going downhill and fast. She will be in trouble this week.

For a second week i was not thrilled with Chris S (who i initially adored).  Same with Phil.  I just don't like him as much as i used to.

Melinda was very good.  I thought lakisha was just okay (i was quite disappointed since she's been so great up until now).

Sanjaya was bad. And i agree with DR MattH. Why were they praising him? Maybe they just decided to stop crucifying him and that will be the only way to get him out. But i actually think they liked it.

I think the ones in the bottom will be phil, sanjaya and stephanie.

Good Morning!

I'm up, I'm up...

And I got up a little earlier today since the exterminator is supposed to come this morning - between 8:00am-10:00am - for the usual Spring spritz.  I've already showered and shaved, as well as had my breakfast.  -And I'm actually thinking of heading downtown sooner rather than later, and letting my still-sleeping roommates deal with the bug guy.  I'm not responsible for being here while the exterminator is here, I just have a feeling that he'll probably show up just as I'm leaving... Murphy's Law and all that.  *Of course, not Cason Murphy's Law... ;)

In any case...

You are correct, Sir.  Although, since the full monty in The Full Monty only occurs during the final moment of the show - and in blinding lights usually - the disrobing at the audition is mainly to see how comfortable the actors are being disrobed since they do spend a good deal of time not fully dressed except for the their smile - and their underwear.  And how much they will have to spend on waxing.   ;D

Anthony has an audition this morning. A production of Shear Madness, something that has been playing for years and years in Washington, DC at the Kennedy Center no less, and Boston, is being done up in Lake George for the summer.

He also has an audition on Friday for the tour of Drowsy Chaperone. He will be auditioning on Monday for a Rodgers and Hart revue. I don't know where that will be done.

All appropriate vibes would be appreciated. My husband needs work.

You can find more information here (http://www.notionmusic.com/products/software.cfm).

That's a cool site, and a cool product.  They've also had a booth set-up at a couple of conferences that past few years.

It's basically an extension of the SmartMusic system that was developed for school programs so that students could practice their music with full accompaniment and in real time.  That whole process still boggles my mind - I mean, the program actually 'listens' to the player and follows him/her.  SmartMusic started off with just piano accompaniments, but soon expanded to orchestral accompaniments.  It's a handy practice tool when it comes time to preparing for Solo and Ensemble festival and other competitions.

As for Notion itself, strangely enough, the one aspect of the program I haven't been too thrilled with is the sound of the program.  Yes, they sampled players from the London Symphony Orchestra, but they still sound "sample-y".  At least in the composition end of the product.  From the way they write about their own product, one would expect that the playback would also be a bit intuitive, but it's not.  -However, I do have to say the note entry interface is quite nice, with a very fast learning curve.  The sounds are nice, but unless you start to embed all the crescendos and diminuendos, and all the natural "tapering" that real players do, it can sound a bit mechanical.  It's good, just misleading in a sense.

Be sure to check out the LSO's own website.  There are some great educational tools on the site, and, if I'm remembering correctly, an interactive tour of the orchestra.

Ot! Good morning, all!  I did not want to get out of bed this morning.  Now that I'm up, I have several errands to run, and this afternoon the folk from Rodgers & Hammerstein will come to listen to my sound mixes.

I'm reading the most wonderful book at the moment: DIVAS AND SCHOLARS by Philip Gossett, who is in charge of the University of Chicago-Ricordi complete critical editions of Rossini and Verdi.  The book is basically a collection of his writings for the past 40 years of experience in editing, reconstructing, and performing these editions of 19th-Century Italian opera.  It's quite wonderful and enthralling.  And I thought I was encountering problems in early musical comedy for the first time!

OK.  Talking streaming sound recording software - does anyone have any suggestions for a preferred product?

I want to record the Wall-to-Wall Sondheim rebroadcast from XM  off my computer this coming Saturday.  I recorded the original broadcast 2 years ago, but the resulting sound quality was rather disappointing.  Just wondering what software products other DRs use.  Intuitiveness/ease of use always a plus!

I use a shareware program to record my spots from the BBC. It's called

Audio Record Wizard (http://www.nowsmart.com/arwizard/)

The trial version limits you to 3 minutes which wouldn't work for Wall to Wall (or much else for that matter). The full version costs $25. I'm happy with it. You can't do much with it other than record streaming audio but it's easy to use and inexpensive.

Another program, which is free (even better), is

Audacity (http://audacity.sourceforge.net/)

It's a pretty full-featured program which lets you record and edit in a number of different formats. I use it to put together my BBC pieces when I burn them to CD. I don't use the record feature much because I'm so use to Audio Record Wizard. I think Audacity comes as the software for a USB turntable so others on this site may be able to speak to the recording quality.

The sound quality from both Audacity and Audio Record Wizard is, to my untrained ears, very good. I have no problems with either program in that respect.

The Quality of Mersey (http://www.ew.com/ew/article/0,,20007164_20008533_20015537,00.html)

I'll grant you, Slezak gets paid for what he does.  And I think this particular column is pretty much spot-on, but I have taken a bit of exception in past columns (for last year's Idol) when he bitchily slammed Eliot Yamin...for what reason I cannot say.  Yamin would turn in the best vocal and Slezak would yammer about him.  I guess he didn't like the "old" teeth or something.

I'm very wary of anyone whose occupation it is to review weekly installments of "American Idol"....especially in regards to "expertise" about what he's saying.

I trust the opinions I read here...even when I might have differeing views on performers/performances.  Slezak gets paid to review TV.  But he's just one more voice like yours and mine and MattH's and Jennifer's and MBarnum's and Jane's, etc.
;)

In the FWIW department:  I strongly disagree with Slezak's remarks about Lakisha's song choice -- she most definitely SHOULD have taken Lulu's advice and done "You're My World"...it could have been specTACular with her voice behind it.  "Diamonds Are Forever" is a good song.  I think she has long wanted to do it....maybe someone once told her she had a Shirley Bassey voice or something.  It was a good vocal, but not what "might" have been.

Addendum to both Audacity and Audio Record Wizard. You are not limited to size of file, you're only limited by the size of your hard drive. If you're recording Wall to Wall, though, I would record in MP3 format because, as you probably know, wav files are

HUGE

Audacity is what that DHL driver had yesterday.

But we've also had bad-driver moments from UPS and even FedEx, so it seems that any company has its share of bad employees.  Sometimes sthey outright lie and say they attempted delivery when we know we've been sitting here waiting for an important package.

DR Edi- I'm staying at the Sheraton Atlanta at 165 Courtland Street NE. If I'm right it isn't that far from the Georgia Dome, so I'm sure I'll see lots of crazy basketball fans

That is close to where DR Jose stayed. A fine place to walk around during the daytime, but at night, don't walk around alone. It is close to Georgia State University so there is quite a bit of patrolling, tho.

There aren't many great restaurants around there. Poo! I wish I was going to be there and could take you out! :'(

Best vibes for Cason and Anthony!!! Get that job, boyz!!!

Last night, I finally got through the last of this quarter's big papers as I slog along to complete this BA... first day of spring - a breather!

Not exactly a day off, though - cuz I have wads of reading and two major projects to finish by March 30, for the MA courses. I'm particularly interested in the reading about psychosynthesis and neurolinguistic programming. This is fascinating stuff! I do love school - and I'm so glad I don't have a day job while I'm doing it!

although -- five singing gigs, spread out over the next month, came in - not exactly performance, but very short paying gigs, nevertheless - stand thar an' saing sorta stuff - paid because I sight-read music at (or damn close to) performance level. I'll take what I can get!!! I don't even have to wear makeup! (ummm... maybe I should vocalize a little, huh?)

Anyway, Jane has told me about poor little Sherlock - fingers x'd that he'll be back to his adorable romping ASAP.

The one I watched last night looked superb. Of course, Universal is putting one movie on each disc and no extras. That's a LOT of space for a movie that runs a tiny bit over an hour. So, the bitrate of the transfer must be through the roof.

I dreamed that it was Gina who got voted out tonight on IDOL. Usually I don't dream about these things, but it must have been on my mind. I really did not like what she did last night. Of course, I hated what Sanjaya did, but he seems protected.

I read that the judges may have praised him to create less sympathy for him. I don't buy that.

It wouldn't surprise me if Gina was in the bottom 3. I really don't think that she has the fan support of some of the other girls.

And as for the judges, I don't really think they care what people think. So i don't know that they would intentionally praise Sanjaya to create less sympathy for him.

But i do think that by them not raking him over the coals, that it will make him go quicker.  In this case it seems like the more simon says he is awful, the more people vote for him.

Thanks!   :) :)

My favorite piece of software is TotalRecorder (http://www.highcriteria.com/).  It's incredibly versatile--for something like Wall-To-Wall Sondheim, you can have it record to mp3 files in something like one hour segments each.  Then you can use it to edit these files as needed (if a file break occurs during a song, you can patch the two files together and extend the break to the end of the song.)

I often use it to record LPs to mp3s, configuring it to create a new file whenever the sound level dips to 0% for more than 2 seconds.  It's not always perfect, but it's very easy to edit.

I was e & t yesterday because I had a stress test yesterday morning, spent the afternoon having my eyes looked at and then purchasing new glasses and then a dinner party with friends.  By the time I got home at 9:30 last night, I was wiped out completely.

And I received a phone call shortly before lunch today from the testing center--I passed my stress test (and my echo cardiogram) with flying colors!  I'll learn more about what this exactly means on my next visit with my cardiologist, but it sounds like good news to me!

Congrats, DR Dan (the Man), on that bit of good news!

Thanks, also, for your feedback on the software question.  I believe I used TotalRecorder the last time - when I found the audio quality of the results unsatisfying.  But I'm sure it's only because I didn't configure the software properly in setting it up to record.

Good Afternoon!

I can die a happy Flapapino now...

I just finished playing an emergency set of auditions for our show.  We saw six people, and they all brought in some fun and challenging music to play: "Rain" (Once On This Island), "Coalhouse's Soliloquy" (Ragtime), "Push Da' Button" (Jamaica), etc., etc...

After we were done, John Kander came up to me, took both my hands in his, and said, "Good job!".

That sooooo totally made my day!  Well, year...  Heck, career.  *Now I just need to figure out to put that on my resume.  ;)

As for the Sondheim reissues... I plan to make a run to Virgin on the way home, and check them out.  As I mentioned before, the only one I really sort of want is Into the Woods, since it has Maureen Moore singing "Boom Crunch".  Otherwise, I'm happy with the original issues.

But I had also heard reports of them being done on the cheap - and since they are being released at   mid-line prices...  We shall see.

Today was Rosie O'Donnell's 45th birthday, and to celebrate it on THE VIEW, they featured performances from three Broadway shows since she is such a fan of Broadway: LES MIZ, THE COLOR PURPLE, and A CHORUS LINE. The latter was my favorite excerpt with the entire company in their gold/platinum costumes doing the "One" finale. Oh, it brought back memories of dancing those steps and trying to sing while being completely out of breath. Thankfully, there were singers off stage on mics helping out.

I ended my afternoon of viewing with W.C. Fields in THE OLD FASHIONED WAY. Not as funny as YOU'RE TELLING ME, but it contains some classic Fields moments including that fabulous juggling act as The Great McGonigle, and his barker antics selling a cure for hoarseness.

And, of course, any time Baby LeRoy is present, there's always amusement.

Easy for you! I'm also a Criminal Minds fan, so for the 10th hour my DVR is chock-a-block.

Maybe I'll put IDOL in a PIP screen while watching Criminal Minds.

I began my afternoon with last night's BOSTON LEGAL. A very surprising ending to the Megan Mullally storyline that I did not see coming. Constance Zimmer's storyline was also of some interest. Pretty good show and less silly than it sometimes is.

I also had no idea where Megan's storyline was going and was quite surprised by not only what her actual story was but also Alan's "deal" with her. ::)

Here's the story from the front page of today's Sioux City Journal about the Angel of Ahlem.

Quote
Story of an 'angel'

Vernon Tott documentary premieres tonight
By Nick Hytrek Journal staff writer

The camera lens brings the face of a forlorn-looking young man into focus on the movie poster.

Through a second-hand camera, Vernon Tott snapped the harsh conditions of Jewish survivors of the Nazi labor camp.

Siouxland residents can see first-hand the joy Tott's pictures have brought to those men and their families.

"Angel of Ahlem," a 60-minute documentary about Tott and his search for camp survivors premieres tonight at the Orpheum Theatre. The 8:15 showing is free to the public.

It will be the first public showing of the movie, filmed and produced by the University of Florida's Documentary Institute.

"We thought we owe it to the family to show it first in Sioux City," said co-director Churchill Roberts, who with his staff has spent three years working on the film.

The movie details the final 10 years of Tott's life, time spent searching almost tirelessly for Ahlem survivors. Tott died last March at age 80 from cancer.

"It's going to be difficult (to watch), but I think it's going to be wonderful," his wife, Betty Tott, said.

On April 10, 1945, Tott and the Army's 84th Division came upon the camp just outside of Hannover, Germany. Shocked by the conditions, Tott pulled out a Kodak camera he bought in a pawn shop before he was shipped overseas and took 18 photos of Jewish men who had been worked nearly to death. They are the only photos of the liberation known to exist.

When he returned home to Sioux City, Tott put the pictures away. For 50 years, they were stashed in his basement until Benjamin Sieradzki wrote a letter to an 84th Division newsletter in 1995. An Ahlem survivor, he was looking for the soldier who took the photos.

Tott replied, and the two became fast friends. Having found Sieradzki, Tott wondered if there were more survivors. By the time he died, more than 30 had been located.

"He absolutely lived and breathed it once he got into it," Betty Tott said.

Sieradzki, who lives in Berkeley, Calif., and two other survivors will attend tonight's premiere.

Roberts learned of Tott after reading an Associated Press story about how the Ahlem survivors had Tott's name engraved at the U.S. Holocaust Museum in Washington, D.C.

The survivors he helped reunite called Tott their angel. Never seeking fame, Tott was just glad to make them happy. Tott was thrilled about the movie, knowing that it could lead to the discovery of more survivors.

"He was proud to know that it was going to happen, even though he knew he wasn't going to get to see it," Sadler said.

Roberts said he thinks viewers will learn a lot about the Holocaust through Tott's eyes.

"I think there will be an enormous amount of pride that this Army veteran from Sioux City devoted the last 10 years of his life to such a noble cause," Roberts said.

When he settles into his seat at the Orpheum tonight, Sadler said, it will be sad that his father didn't live to see the film, at least not in person.

"Somewhere there, he'll be with us," Sadler said.

Angels always are.

Wisconsin Man Sentenced to Probation for Having Sex With Dead Deer
Wednesday, March 21, 2007

SUPERIOR, Wis.  —
A 20-year-old Superior man received probation after he was convicted of having sexual contact with a dead deer.

Hathaway's probation will be served at the same time as a nine-month jail sentence he received in February for violating his extended supervision.

He was found guilty in April 2005 of felony mistreatment of an animal after he killed a horse with the intention of having sex with it.

"The type of behavior is disturbing," Judge Michael Lucci said. "It's disturbing to the public. It's disturbing to the court."

I suspect it's disturbing to the animals, as well!

I'm at work ordering our monthly High Demand List (up until this year, it was done every other month).  Our selectors receive a list of EVERY title in the library computer system that has a hold (request) and decide which items will be reordered.  They order more books if the holds-to-copies ratio is six-to-one or greater and A/V items are ordered at a ten-to-one ratio.  They can't, of course, order every title, but it still can take several days to do the whole thing.

There seems to be a huge difference in roundtrip prices for trips from Portland to NY...if I go in early June it is really quite cheap...but if I go in late June (as originally planned) it is twice as much...and if I go in July it is waaaaaaaaaaay expensive!

What happens in late June and July in NY that makes travel so expensive at that time...is there some type of mega NY type celebration that I don't know about?

It's that once a year occurrence of high volume of travel called vacation period, Mikey!

Good Evening!

...Sometimes I don't mind taking the C Train (local) back uptown.  Usually less people, less crowded. Usually a place to sit.  And those extra 8-9 minutes on the train aren't too bad when you're able to sit down and relax.

In any case...

I'm seeing Barber of Seville tonight at the Met, and my eyes are already glazing over just reading the synopsis.  :)  Just kidding, looking forward to it, but the synopsis makes the plot seem awfully silly.

I want to see Il Barbiere too!  Well, actually, I want to see Juan Diego Florez.

-And he sings well too!

*I was hoping to see this production when the coloratura soprano, Diana Damrau, was singing Rosina.  She has the most "exciting" high notes - including a practically flawless high(!) F!

After seeing A CHORUS LINE on THE VIEW today, I got nostalgic for the second CHORUS LINE I was a part of, and I put the tape in the VCR and watched the first hour or so of it. I skipped through the CAssie solo (our Cassie sang well but was not the greatest dancer in the world) and Paul's monologue (which I've watched SO much), and got through "The Tap COmbination" and Paul's accident before I turned it off for prime time TV.

Good evening all. I went to see Angel of Ahlem tonight.  It was quite interesting and surprisingly funny.  I was impressed with the way the doc was done. It had very serious and touching moments interspersed with really funny comments from the survivors. There was a scene were they are trying to identify someone in one of the old photos and they are all sure it's someone else.  No doubt about it!

It was a wondeful evening. There was a dinner, I wasn't invited to it, but that's ok.  After that they had the exhibit of the photos Vernon took of Ahlem and then the movie.  Following the movie they recognized 4 survivors who were present  and had spent the week talking to kids at the local high schools, Vernon's family and the film makers.

One of the very interesting things is that there wasn't documentation of Ahlem before Vernon showed up with the photos. The survivors were all thankful that he had witnessed what they had gone through and that there was photographic evidence from an American soldier to verify that it happened.

The movie will be on PBS sometime in the future

Sped through the IDOL results show and was very disappointed in the elimination. True, she was not at her best this week, but there are clearly others who are far weaker singers. Nope, she wasn't going to win the show, but she deserved a higher placement than 11th, especially in light of who's remaining to go on the IDOL tour.

And the male in the bottom two had his best-ever performance, I thought. Just goes to show how flakey the voting is.

Interesting developments the past couple days...so I am beginning to believe my friend really is trying to run into me at the morning coffee shop.  Today he told me he lives on the other side of town, no good reason to be at the shop that's on my way to work...I saw him this morning and he was really late, had a phone conference at 8:30 AM. (it was about 8:10AM) but when I asked if he wanted to sit and talk he said "Sure, I can always call my secretary and have her reschedule the conference"  He always has time to talk, no matter what.

Sounding a little hopeful, lunch one day...run into him for coffee the next...hmmm I'm enjoying this. :)

...I haven't seen girls cry like that in an audience since...hmmmm, the Beatles! ...And let me see, weren't they part of the British invasion of the 60s?  Hmmmm, wasn't last night a salute to the British invasion of the 60s?  ...A plant?!  Nahhhh, it had to be merely a coincidence...AI Karma!!

(those AI producers are SOOOO subtle...)

Good evening alll

I had a rather disturbing night at work. A man brought an elderly man in a motorized chair and left him. THe man in the chair had no id except for his name. I noted at 815 that he was still there and he had been in the library over 3 hours. I called campus security when he became ill. Later we found out that the family threw him on a buss and sent him to Fargo with a few belongings. The bus depot had no clue what to do with him and informed the taxi company to dump him somewhere. That somewhere was the NDSU library.

I went to Costco tonight and brought back the icky cans of diet Pepsi and they gave me my money back with no trouble...and they didn't ask to see my receipt!  Someone at Costco a couple of months ago told me that all returns needed receipts and this time they didn't ask for one.  But I got my money back and bought a brand new case.  That's all I care about. :)
