I remember THE COMPETITION. I did not remember that the great Lee Remick was in it though.

That reminds me of a fun [kind of campy, though I don't think intentionally] film that I haven't seen in ages...

Does anyone remember Lee Remick as a master piano teacher in The Competition?

Ah, "The Competition" - A movie I love for obvious reasons.  ;)

And I would have given the win to Amy Irving too.  Richard Dreyfuss' piano-playing-faking was not good.  At all.

-And Lee Remick's "moment" after the announcement of the winner...  YES!!

Well, Jose, if you want to sneak your name in, I could talk to some folks!

Hmm...  Although, I think the listings have to be cleared through the conductor and the AFM payroll for each show.  But.... Hmm...

Now I had read BK's review of REFLECTIONS IN A GOLDEN EYE a few days back, and though it made it quite clear that there were some strange goings-on, nothing could prepare me for just how INSANE the movie is. It was cool to see the urine-tinted cut on TMC. I found Liz Taylor quite attractive throughout. I wonder how somebody thought they could make a successful movie out of that material though.

Good morning, all!  I slept late again, and that's good because next week my colleague Tom Murray rejoins me for work on THE LADY OF THE SLIPPER, and if the office is going to move, then it's another busy week.  This afternoon I have an MRI at 6:15; I'm having troubles again with cervical discs and it's affectng my right arm.

Today, I shall transcribe all of my notes from yesterday's NYPL trek, and then I may continue with the Second Season of THE CLOSER.  So far, my favorite episode is the body in Provenza's garage. The two detectives caught in the middle are such naughty boy scouts in deep trouble with their den mother and it's so funny.  I saw another friend's name in the credits - Conan McCarty - but I saw him once in a sequence and don't recall his saying anything during the episode! I suspect he was cut in edits.

TOD:
DVD: THE CLOSER Season 2, POPULAR, Disc 6, UPSTAIRES DOWNSTAIRS Season 4
CD:  THe Firebrand of Florence, June Bronhill, Guy Haines, Tales of Hoffmann
VCR: Hmmm, what will it be this week?

Yes, I was thinking we'd hide it in there somewhere, stick each letter of your name on different pages like a little puzzle. Or hide you in the Fire Commissioner's warning.

Grom sounds great but, unfortunately, it's on the Upper West Side. We will have to make a trek some other time to try the treats up there. Looks like it is worth the trip.

Mr. Moore, I humbly apologize for not sending you my schedule for the upcoming invasion (and I mean that in the best way).

I will do so promptly by separate e-mail.

TOD. I actually bought a CD yesterday that I love. The soundtrack to an incredible movie out now called ONCE. Wonderful music. Beautiful, simple movie about a street singer in Dublin meeting a Czech girl and working on songs with her. Highly recommended!

And speaking of "WOW" - Believe it or not - and I can hardly believe it myself... I have been Levain free for TWO WEEKS!!  Well, actually, almost THREE weeks. -I believe the last time I had a Levain cookie was when DR singdaw came into the city.  I've bought cookies for others since then, but I honestly can't remember the last time I had one myself.

*Of course, come the last week of this month with all the Hainsies and Kimlets coming into town... Well... Let's just say the drought will be o'er.

Hmmm...initially I could not recall Lee Remick being in THE COMPETITION, either, but now that you've mentioned her "moment",  I've just had a flash of her icy cold character breaking free and boogying with someone at the apres-competition party at the end of the movie.  Am I recalling this correctly?

Yes.  But there's also that great moment where she steps out of the hall right after they announce the winner... She's all by herself... No expression on her face... And then this happy-wicked smile comes over her face and she jumps for joy (literally).

In my DVD player:  Queer As Folk:  The Final Season.  It just came in the mail yesterday!  I have the whole series!  (Now, I just need to watch the rest of the series leading up to the final season. ::))

I have all of the seasons, too, and I've yet to watch a single one. I saw them all on Showtime when they were first broadcast, but I haven't found a time when I wanted to sit down and revisit the entire series again, even though I always enjoyed it and found it a great guilty pleasure.

Yep, I remember that moment now.

Okay, time to browse eBay for a copy of THE COMPETITION...

I'm finishing yet another bio of Ivor Novello. Earlier in the year we went through a spate of reading about Novello. Anthony finished the last book a while ago but I hadn't had a chance to start it. Even though I know the material very well it's still a good read. I love Novello!

Which book on him would you recommend? I am interested in reading about his life and would love some suggestions.

The title of MY next book (to steal bk's oft-used quote ... don't know why, but someone hoping to get raisins from Fresno made me laugh...)

It looks like John Doyle may be bringing Sondheim's Bounce to NYC.

But NOT with the actors playing instruments...

I hasve two books on Novello, but I honestly don't knpow where they are at the moment! One's mostly photographs with a bit of text and the other's a rather cautious biography from the early 1980s, as I recall.

I looked on Amazon.com and there are a couple of new ones, one by James Harding - might be a reprint - whose books on Brithish musicals after Sir Arthur Sullivan, French operetta, and Jacques Offenbach I recommend highly.
