And the word of the day is: SCROD!From Wikipedia:
What does it mean "Peplum", DR JRand???
'morning, Danise! How's the weather down there? Stay safe and dry vibes to you and DR Michael S!
Because the peplum on some women's clothing was similar to the clothing worn around the waist of the musclemen in gladiator movies, they are called Peplum films. I first learned this term from DR MBARNUM.
Are there any photos of DRMBarnum wearing his peplum before he stole that drag from Myrna Loy?
DR HISAKA - sorry I wasn't around to answer your question.
DR DANISE is correct.

Any way you say it - it's a man skirt.
~~~~~~~~~~Good Vibes to our friends in Wilma's path~~~~~~~
As I was exiting my building today, my landlady came running at me, her mouth full of toothpaste, yelling, "You've got a leak! You've got a leak!!" Confused, I immediately checked the front of my pants. She said it was in our bathroom and as I stared at her blue, foamy tongue, she explained that there is water running down the walls of the two apartments below mine and her ceiling is bubbling and about to give way. I am unaware of any leaks in my bathroom, but her husband - who I am certain is NOT a plumber - is in our apartment as I type this trying to find the leak. If the leak is coming from our tub, we're screwed. He'd have to rip out all the tile around the tub just to get to the pipes. :-\
Many hearty congratulations to TCB for these many honors. I'm sure they're all MOST deserved.
Indeed they are!
...except those he beat me out for, of course... ;D
Congrats, Tom!
Thank you, DR Jose once again for all of the hard work you put into the eating tour. I can't speak for anyone else but you really helped to make this last trip something very special.
DR Jose... can you tell me anything aboutr Lady in White? Synopsis etc? Also, is the show 'family friendly'? I've been getting playbill.ciom offers for tickets and have been thinking about getting some...
Oh, DR Ron, that kind of thing drives me simply bonkers. I hate trying to sort out something like that which on the surface should be very simple to do and, of course, in reality becomes this BIG DEAL on their end.
Bah!
DR Jose, the Biblical epic you're thinking about is John Huston's THE BIBLE ...in the beginning.
It is available on DVD.
DR Danise, Peter Ustinov played the Emperor Nero in QUO VADIS. Nominated for an Oscar for it, too.
Musical mysteries have never had an easy time of it. REDHEAD won the Tony and ran a year (but no revivals anywhere) while BAKER STREET ran six months and flopped. DROOD was great fun, but it, too, closed in the red after a year and a half.
I scored REDHEAD for Goodspeed in 1998.
DRMBarnum, I'm surprised your favorite bible flic isn't George Rivero's ADAM AND EVE!
How was the show received without Verdon to do the role tailored for her?
Thanks for the info.
Oh, I forgot about that one! I wonder how many Church ladies gasped when that film was inadvertently ordered and played in the basement theater!! LOL!
It's said that dogs can hear very high-pitched sounds. Who hears the sounds at the other end of the spectrum?
Chorus boys.
TOD:I thought that was about a supersized doo-wop group.
The One, the Only, The Ten Commandments.
DR TCB - Congratulations on your awards!
DR Jose - Thank you for the thorough tour listings. I'm looking forward to virtually reliving Oct. 5.
When the show was over, we joined his Dayton shape-note singing group for the second half of their October gathering. It was my first time attending a sing and I think I'll leave the shape-note singing to Richard. I found it very confusing and loud, which irritated the tinnitus I have in my right ear.
Or, head back East on 14th to the Subway station. Take the A/C/E to Port Authority/Times Square. Head over to Fred & Skip's place for knosh and drink. :)
Shape-note singing has always fascinated me. However, like yourself, it can be a bit loud and "hard" on my ears. The harmonies are very "cool", but all those open intervals - fourths and fifths - can start my ears ringing too.
...I couldn't help but notice that when the Invisible Man first went invisible and removed his clothing, he was going commando. ...Something about this, in combo with your earlier link to the dolls, got me to wondering:
Something about this, in combo with your earlier link to the dolls, got me to wondering:
Does GI Joe go commando?
I never had one of them, so I really don't know, myself.
If he does, is there anything there?
It would explain why he has to carry that big gun, if he doesn't.
8) :o
I think I have my Emperors mixed up. I was thinking of that skinny guy with the high screeming voice.
I think you are talking about Jay Robinson who portrayed Caligula in "The Robe" and "Demetrius and the Gladiators"!!!Or she could be thinking of the "Indian" from the Villiage People in Can't Stop the Music.
VixMom, I liked the stage set up of Fiddler as well. I forgot to mention that.
I'm glad I wasn't the only one in tears the almost the whole second act. I thought it was because I was so tired.
Gotta go get supper going. It's slow roasted chicken for us today. It will help to warm up the house.
Laters!
I think you are talking about Jay Robinson who portrayed Caligula in "The Robe" and "Demetrius and the Gladiators"!!!
See below (Simmons, Robinson & Burton)
I'm so glad you're doing okay there.. I have been worried about you ahaving to evacuate right after having surgery and I was wooried about what you would do with Bear....
Stage and Screen Producer Tony Adams Dead at 52
by Broadway.com Staff
Tony Adams
Theater producer Tony Adams, a longtime collaborator of filmmaker Blake Edwards, died of a stroke at Beth Israel Hospital in New York City on October 22. He was 52 years old.
Adams co-produced Edwards' Victor/Victoria for the Broadway stage, which opened at the Marquis Theatre on October 25, 1996 and ran 734 performances. His relationship with Edwards began in 1975, working as associate producer on The Return of the Pink Panther. He eventually became president of Blake Edwards Entertainment, overseeing the original acclaimed film version of Victor/Victoria as well as countless other films including 10, S.O.B., The Man Who Loved Women, Micki and Maude, A Fine Mess, That's Life!, Blind Date, Sunset, Skin Deep, Switch and five Pink Panther sequels.
In a statement, Blake Edwards and wife Julie Andrews said, “We have known Tony for so many years; we felt he was our second son. He was a beloved, dear, trusted and talented friend. We are devastated at this sudden loss and we will miss him, his kindness and his wonderful sense of humour. Our thoughts go out to his family at this time.”
Off Broadoadway, Adams produced Minor Demons at the Century Center for the Performing Arts in 1997 and the recent The Immigrant at Dodger Stages. He was a senior managing member of Hello Entertainment, a theater producing company actively developing and producing Broadway projects. In addition, Adams produced Lullaby of Broadway: Opening Night on 42nd Street, Julie Andrews: Back on Broadway, My Favorite Broadway: The Leading Ladies and My Favorite Broadway: The Love Songs for PBS.
Adams is survived by his third wife, The Phantom of the Opera star Anne Runolfsson, and children Alister Adams, Andrew Hopewell, Molly Adams and Tess Adams.
BK, I started Rewind last night--very enjoyable so far. I still remember discussing "limo services" with you over lunch at Jerry's. ;)
TOD: Anything with a Rosza score, which covers just about everything from the 50s, LOL. I even have a soft spot for "Sodom and Gomorrah" (TCB, TCB, where are you?).
And speaking of TCB, congrats!!!
DR Vixmom, re: talking during plays/musicals. I sort of have a policy, that I give people a few chances before I say anything. I would have let that lady annoy me 2 or 3 times. But then i would have said something. Just glaring does not usually do the trick. Since obviously she had no idea what she was doing.
Sometimes it can annoy the annoying person. But I know that if I don't speak up, then their chattering will bother ME for the rest of the show.
So I just try to be really nice about it. Because most of the time the person does not even realize how rude they are being.
I would ask about your soft spot, JMK, but I am not that type of guy!
Thank you, one and all, for your congratulations. I was thrilled. The most gratifying award was the Best Actor for "Branch Rickey" in NATIONAL PASTIME. It was, I think, my finest work so far. I had been told that I was not eligible for that show, becuase it was a second stage production, but the judges disagreed.
Being the ignoramus about these things tht I am, what exactly do you receive as your award (s), is it a nice little statue or certificate you can proudly display or a do you just get written up in a book somewhere?
ON THIS DAY in 1817 Hippolyte Mege Mouries was born. A French scientist, he invented margarine and patented canned meat.
(So much for the French being responsible for haute cuisine.)
Der B just commented that he's sure that DR TCB has never had a Dickie that he didn't appreciate.
I'm sure that whatever categories you were nominated in as competition to Tom, the voters saw you as a bright young star in the local theatrical firmament.
But there's nothing like a GOM (grand old man) of the theater!
;)
Thank you, DR Ron, for putting in to words exactly what I was thinking about Jed. I am quite certain that Jed's acting talents will still be talked about and enjoyed, long after I have stopped performing. It is reward enough for me to have already shared the stage with my dear son in two shows.
For winning the Richard Odlin Awards, which are chosen by a panel of judges, you receive a plaque. This if the first year of the People's Choice Awards, but I have been told that you are given a certificate.
The Richard Odlin Awards (The Dickies) were first given out in the late 50s, early 60s. They were named after a beloved artistic director who had died of lung cancer in 1958. There is a bronze statue of him in his last role as Sakini in TEAHOUSE OF THE AUGUST MO0N in the lobby of the theater. The original awards were two-foot tall replicas of that statue. I have one of those awards at home.
Oof...my blood sugar is through the roof right now!Isn't it nice when we all get along....... :D :-*
;D
Isn't it nice when we all get along....... :D :-*
Yeah...but sometimes it could rot yer teeth!
:D
Geez, I try to be a smartass and you go and get all nice on me. :D The pleasure has been all mine, Dad. I look forward to many, many more shows together.
Daer elmore.. I do not have Netflix... I shall have to see if my public library has tThe Woman in White' they do stock a lot of PBS stuff so they might. Thanks!!
That is, if I can back out of my garage. The construction workers think nothing of parking right in front of my driveway for 30-45 minutes while they deliver something to the work site next door. Very irritating but I know better than to complain. My yard would be trashed every night if I said anything.
Never worry about Bear or Brandi. If it had been bad enough, I would have thrown everyone into Bonnie and we would have headed for the hills or NYC, which ever came first! ;) :D
Back from GOOD NIGHT, AND GOOD LUCK. Engrossing film dealing with a period in our country's history when I was alive but too young to know or care what was going on.
There is just something about black and white photography that just grips you - instantly - from the second a film begins, especially on the big screen.
It's a fascinating look behind the scenes of this tense period where folks were forging new frontiers in the medium of television. The film is less than two hours, and I'm not sure it shouldn't have been a little longer giving a little more background on some of the names that were mentioned during the film. Everything you need to know is there, but even as someone who's read a good bit about this period, I will need to see the film repeated time to catch all of the references.
I can see why David Stathairn won Best Actor at the Venice Film Festival. He really does take on Murrow's television manner. Doesn't deal with his private life at all which did surprise me a bit (but that's not what the film is about).
If only we could thank him for Velveeta, too.;D ;D Hee hee!
DR Jane: I truly believed "Mar Mitzvah" was a ceremony I hadn't heard of before...
If your library doesn't have it, they could probably get it through Inter-Library Loan (ILL).
This Public Service Announcement has been brought to you by your friendly HHW Pacific Northwest Library worker. ;)
You just need an excuse to come back!
Yikes! I don't know which mental picture is worse--the landlady with the foaming blue mouth or the picture of you having your bathroom all torn up!
Hey Elmore, Seeing how your such a BIG Michael Ball fan now, do you want someone ( ::) 8) )to go see Woman In White with you??? ;) :D
DRDanise, I will never be an ALW fan! Life is too short!
Bite me, a**h**e!
and honset I think it is thatyou have gone to so much troub;e to return to HSN their merchandise which they sent to you . Other people might consider it their due for their inconvenience and keep it, or refuse to return it unil they had received their original completed order
PS Are you feeling any better breathing wise?
I finally did get my confirmation from Amazon that the ordered DVDs (containing the new 3-disc OZ set) had shipped. I guess that means I can expect it Wednesday.
Bite me, a**h**e!(Is that better, Ron?)
That's MORE than I can say! I've gotten confirmations on shipments of two items ordered late last week.
But the months-old pre-order has not yet shipped, to my knowledge.
Same old stuff, apparently, from the "pre-order" department.
My favourite topic "Woman In White". Not family friendly, not child friendly not anyone friendly - unless you wish to sleep. It is DULL. Nothing much happens except so much projected scenery and a clever "Train Scene" (used before in "Whistle Down The Wind).
You don't care about the characters, the music is repetitive and not interesting, the lyrics for the "big ballad" are trite. The most boring night I have had in any theatre - professional or otherwise.
(All based on my experience with the London production). "Aspects of Love" was ten times better.
"Passion" was more fun than WiW."Passion" was the first Sondheim show I wish had been written by Sir Andrew; it would still be dreary but the music would be cheap and romantic!
I attempt humor, but I'm not sure it always comes off that way.
DR Elmore, have you heard from Michael S again? The storm should be completely past him by now.Sorry, no word. I would post it immediately.
It even does sometimes when it wasn't your intention.
DR Ron Pulliam - Have you checked your horoscope and/or bio-rhythm lately? Maybe your in a low "shopping cycle".
;)
"Passion" was more fun than WiW.
DR RON so sorry to hear of your ordering woes. But I think your idea that you got someone's stash is very logical....imagine how they feel?
Danise, you have a nice insurance company.
Ouch, that's just cruel! I love it!!! :DI love "Passion" too DR Jed. As does Colin and DR Jose.
I am very happy with them. If I had known that full coverage insurance would be so cheep, I would have switched companies and got it a long time ago.I like GEICO a lot too. I've been with them since I became "insurable" when I started driving at 16. In fact, I come from a GEICO family.
It could also be your birthday very soon. What do I know?
Reminds me. I'm due for a haircut.
Doesn't deal with his private life at all which did surprise me a bit (but that's not what the film is about).Uh, missing something here. What would interest us about Murrow's private life?
If the ship sinks much much earlier I may be interested.
Would you prefer that it sunk in 1911? ???
Would you prefer that it sunk in 1911? ???At least before the silly plot with the gun!
Uh, missing something here. What would interest us about Murrow's private life?
I think I'm reading too fast, or else I need a better eye prescription. I could sworn Danise had said something about Jason worrying about having his bathrobe torn up, but then saw when it was quoted that it was his bathroom that might be torn up. But for a page or so, I was wondering why Jason would be so upset about his bathrobe being torn up. Guess all the talk about THE ROBE and other Biblical epics made my eyes read things funny.
Ouch, that's just cruel! I love it!!! :D
DRJASON you MUST see the end of SABOTEUR.....maybe it's on during the Hitchcock week on TCM...check the schedule.
On the Cingular front:
My phone is activated and ready to use.
My mother's phone must wait until tomorrow, at which time I will contact Cingular Southeast (who was closed by 6 p.m. PDT) and get my mother's phone a new number with her area code.
Everyone at Cingular has been very nice and the lady I dealt with this evening -- Cheryl, or Sheryl, or Cherril, or Cherryl, or however she spells it -- was just terrific.
And I told her so.
The tv ads are declaring that the new special edition of TITANIC has an alternate ending. Perhaps the boat doesn't sink?It sinks with James Cameron on it.
Reminds me. I'm due for a haircut.You too? I've been getting comments from my co-workers. ::)
...I think a glimpse at what was going on with the home front might have broadened our understanding of the man AND the journalist. If I had a criticism, it's that I wanted a more complete picture than simply that of a taciturn man with the weight of the word on his shoulders.Agreed. And that is without my seeing the current film. But, as you noted, that would have made for a different film.
I recorded MEDIUM and will get to it tomorrow (along with finishing the bulk of the Sherlock Holmes mystery.)I do heartily hope you didn't record it in HDTV. Der B and I watched the show in said format, and there were numerable gaps, parts that didn't transmit properly. Der Be finally gave up and, at my urging, watched the ending on the regular network transmittion.
