And here is the new Kritzerland release.  You can order on the site at six in the morning, but if you want to order prior to that, you know the drill - 23.73 (includes shipping) via paypal to kritzerland at adelphia dot net.

Kritzerland is pleased to present a new limited edition soundtrack CD – two great scores, one a world-premiere release, on one jam-packed CD:

THE WAYWARD BUS

and

THE ENEMY BELOW

Music Composed by Leigh Harline  Conducted by Lionel Newman

John Steinbeck and the movies seemed made for each other.   He was blessed to have major directors bring his works to the screen – such greats as John Ford (The Grapes of Wrath), Elia Kazan (Viva Zapata and East of Eden), Alfred Hitchcock (Lifeboat), Lewis Milestone (Of Mice and Men and The Red Pony), and Victor Fleming (Tortilla Flat).  It was a homecoming of sorts for The Wayward Bus – Twentieth Century Fox had already done Steinbeck’s The Grapes of Wrath, Lifeboat, and Viva Zapata, and The Wayward Bus, whose journey to the screen was indeed wayward, ended up at Fox after having floated around elsewhere for several years.     Top-billed was Joan Collins as an insecure, hard-drinking, jealous wife, with Rick Jason as her husband, the driver of the titular wayward bus.  But it’s really an ensemble picture.  Hot off her screen success in The Girl Can’t Help It, Jayne Mansfield turns in a wonderful and touching performance as a stag party gal, and Dan Dailey is also affecting as a salesman who takes an interest in her.  Also terrific are Betty Lou Keim and Dolores Michaels – Keim playing an unhappy waitress getting away from her humdrum job, and Michaels as a young woman trying to break free of her strict parents.   Also released by Fox in 1957 was the tense and exciting war picture, The Enemy Below.  Directed by Dick Powell, The Enemy Below is the story of two boats – an American destroyer and a German U-boat.  Robert Mitchum and Curt Jurgens turn in excellent performances as the two captains engaged in a deadly battle of wits.  The taut screenplay was by Wendell Mayes (The Spirit of St. Louis, Anatomy of a Murder, Advise and Consent, In Harm’s Way, Von Ryan’s Express, Hotel, The Poseidon Adventure, and Death Wish to name a few), based on the novel by D.A. Rayner, and the film was beautifully shot by Harold Rossen in color and Cinemascope.
The Wayward Bus and The Enemy Below, while polar opposites as films, did share something vital between them – two very different but superb musical scores by Leigh Harline.     Harline’s score for The Wayward Bus is filled with the longing and yearning of its characters.  You can feel it immediately in the film’s main title music, and it continues in each successive cue – it really gets under the skin of the characters and drama, and it’s filled with plaintive melodies and colors.  The music for The Enemy Below is thrilling and memorable.  Harline’s scoring choices are interesting – he lets long dialogue sequences play without music, while scoring the action sequences, with his themes clearly defining the American and German boats and their maneuvers.  Once the climactic battle begins, Harline lets his music go pretty much non-stop, and it’s simply exhilarating battle music, the kind no one seems to know how to write anymore.  This is the world premiere release of The Wayward Bus, in stereo and sounding wonderful, thanks to the usual tender loving care of Nick Redman’s team.  We present the complete score as it appears in the film.  The Enemy Below was previously released on Intrada (as a standalone score, which quickly sold out).  We’ve remastered it for this release, presenting every note of Harline’s score, but omitting the bonus tracks from the Intrada CD, which consisted of a few German drinking songs and some radar blips.

The Wayward Bus/The Enemy Below is limited to 1000 copies only.  The price is $19.98, plus shipping.

CD will ship the second week of August  – however, never fear, preorders placed directly through Kritzerland usually ship one to five weeks earlier (we’ve been averaging four weeks early).   To place an order, see the cover, or hear audio samples, just visit www.kritzerland.com.

Hi all.  Made it though the night--and with power even though as soon as I said "Good night" here, the power went out for about a half hour.

My eyes feel goopy but are ok.  I can't believe that I have to go to work today.  Not with all the flooding they are reporting around downtown tampa.  Oh well.

Good morning, all! I slept horribly last night, fitfully with a lot of tossing and turning, pursued by really strange dreams that i now recall little about. In the only one I do remember, i was a busnessman waiting outside a bank.

I will be heading down to the McGlinnventory this morning to ship these books to Dublin and get this job off my back. I'm meeting my friend Korliss this afternoon for coffee, and I look forward to seeing her. I believe that is it.

Today is Monday.  Shopping and banking to do.

I really do not like any of the movies MR BK mentioned in the notes today:  Broadcast News, Terms of Endearment, and As Good As It Gets are just all so self-indulgent to me .....from direction to performances......  I know there are some Oscar winning turns there.....but whew!  Not for me, thank you.....no matter how good the transfer is.

Coffee.  My kingdom for coffee.

Good morning, all.

Woke up over an hour ago to one of those symphonies of thunder we get maybe once or twice a year.  I just had to lie there and marvel at it.  Lightning and thunder were continuous and coming from all directions, a really amazing and overwhelming show.  We're in a calm between two lines of it now.  The second looks like it'll be more rain and less intense in the lightning and thunder department, but we'll see.

It's about time to head out and it's raining. Damn!

I just got an email from Karl, the Irish actor wh played the two dialogue roles in EILEEN,  and he's not heading to Los Angeles until after we finish the recording, so I'm hoping we can hire him again. When we asked him three months ago, he told us he would be in LA, but he's been waiting on a visa. His cousn Colin is a lead on this new tv series with Jennifer Love Hewett.

I remember that I liked AS GOOD AS IT GETS when I saw it years ago, but without BK's description of some of the plot points I don't think I could recall anything about it.

TERMS OF ENDEARMENT, on the other hand, struck a deep chord with me and I devoured every repeated viewing when it began running on cable in the early 80s.  There was a gap of about twenty years where I didn't see it until about two years ago when it began showing up regularly on cable again and I was reminded how much I love this movie.

BROADCAST NEWS appeals to me more on an intellectual level but there is that one scene where William Hurt's character spots Holly Hunter arriving for a date and he does that heart-struck-by-Cupid's-bow thing that still makes me swoon--I've often stolen that gesture.

I can't believe how fast the weather can change. It was so hot last week. Record temps. And so nice and sunny. And now the next 3 days are supposed to be so cool and rainy. And then thurs-sun are supposed to be hot and sunny again.  It's not so much the rain i find odd. It's how cool it is supposed to get. To go from 40C to 16C that is crazy (100+F = 60F).

I was in a panic this morning because I thought I'd lost my phone. I was using it in the coffee shop but when I got back home it was missing from my pocket. Using another phone, it was obviously ringing out but there was no answer. I went back to the coffee shop but it wasn't there and no one had handed it in. I'd already looked for it in the car but I used my other phone inside the car and rang the number and sure enough, heard it ringing. It must have fallen out of my pocket and somehow got lodged under the passenger seat.

I made a slide show of photos from the Youth Theatre Workshop using a couple of songs they play during the show.  I uploaded it to YouTube and linked it to the theatre page so the kids could see it.

One of the songs was Madonna's "Vogue" - which I bought and paid for on a cd many years ago, so I was using my CD file.

WMG (Warners Music Group) flagged my video and will not allow the link.

So, I guess I won't be PAYING for any more WMG music that I want - I will find it "elsewhere."

"Who are our alumni?  The two major contenders to be the next President of the United States; six of the nine U.S. Supreme Court Justices; leaders of law firms and businesses around the world; more deans and law professors than from any other law school; venture fund managers and investment bankers; thoughtful advisers to financial institutions; innovative lawyers for low-income individuals; inspiring authors and public intellectuals.  The great treasure of the School is its people, students, faculty, staff and alumni."

Thanks, DR JRand!  Once the doctor's office finally called in ALL of Mom's prescriptions to the pharmacy and they were ready at 2:30pm, I was able to pick them up, deliver them to Mom, and go over them with her.  From there I went to the Y and walked and NuStepped off my frustration.  We've only been trying to get these meds since Friday...

I'm home now, showered, and waiting for Lauren to arrive and Richard to get home from the Y.  When we're all here, we'll order pizza for dinner.  My intention was to cook something, but waiting around until mid-afternoon meant that was not going to happen.

DR jane, that is great that you can now swim across the pool without stopping. But you shouldn't have felt embarrassed before. As long as you weren't in the fast lane slowing people down then everyone should go at their own pace.

Since we don't have a fast lane slow swimmers can slow other's down.  I am by far not the slowest one out there.  I think the fast swimmers can be annoying when they practically run over a slower swimmer.  I try to pace myself as not to catch up to anyone in front of me.  I also wait at the edge for a faster swimmer to pass me.

Sometimes I like to take a break at the edge and use the time to kick and strengthen my legs.   Because of how I swim using my shoulders I don't kick as hard as I used to.

Really embarrassing was stopping in the middle of the pool and standing, which the rules say not to do.

We didn't get as hot but we did get colder.  Reading all the bad weather everyone is having I suppose I shouldn't complain about 60 degrees since it isn't raining.  We are way below the average temps without breaking any records.

Woken up at four in the morning by DC Daisy making revolting noises in vomiting up hairballs again. So I had to change all the bedding, after which I was wide awake of course so I watched "Last Year in Marienbad" again to see if I could figure it out. When it finished I felt as if I had been sleeping anyway because the whole film is like a dream.

Keep reminding my I shouldn't get a cat again.  I have enough problems sleeping at night with distractions from pets.

Saturday night when Keith fell asleep I was reading in bed.  When he woke up Sunday morning I was reading.  He asked if I had slept at all.  I was pleased to say I hadn't read all that long before falling asleep, which could have been why I was reading so early.

That is one reason why I like to keep my phone charged, so I can call it.  Since you weren't around when I had Echo, our first Bernese Mountain Dog, I must tell you the story of Echo and my lost phone.

We were hiking in the fields when I noticed I had dropped my phone.  Aside from having very little clue as to where I had dropped it the battery was about gone.  Knowing I could never get home in time to get Keith's phone and walk back to call my phone, I turned to Echo and said "Pick Up!".  She looked at me and began sniffing.  I went back the way I thought I had come searching the ground while she went off in a slightly different direction.  Between 8 & 10 minutes later she obviously looked interested in something.  And then her head came up off the ground with my phone in her mouth.  Needless to say my reaction made her one happy dog.  I'm surprised they didn't hear me screaming miles away.  I then called Keith who yelled  "good girl" multiple times, once again exciting her.

Not terribly insightful interview with Jack Jones. Still, his approach to developing his new cabaret show is very much in keeping with BK's notes today:

I agree with his statements regarding LOLLIPOPS & ROSES and WIVES SHOULD ALWAYS BE LOVERS which I still enjoy listening to.

Did anybody watch the new reality show The Great Escape last night? I didn't finish watching it yet. But how completely bizarre. They have teams and they have to escape from Alcatraz?!?  I'll have to finish watching the episode to really understand. But i had no idea that this is what the show was going to be about.
I watched "Falling Skies" which came on right before it so I saw maybe a minutes of it while I fumbled around looking for the remote to shut the TV off.  It did look interesting but I was tired.

The one performance in the film that is always overlooked is Shirley Knight.

I thought she was terrific as Helen Hunt's mother.

I think Shirley Knight has always been an under-rated actress; all the way back to DARK AT THE TOP OF THE STAIRS.

I admit we had the same issue for Craig.  We had a girls name picked out but fluctuated between three different name combinations for Craig.  The hospital gave Keith special permission to visit during an off time so we could get a sitter for Bryan and have quiet time to make our final decision.  Once we had peace and quiet it wasn't very difficult.

I know it is not ask BK  day BUT -- dear Bruce, can you explain to me why you care what a bunch of idiots say about dvd releases that you have not issued?  I do not mean that question in a rude way -- I truly want to know

Jane, it took me a while to get to this story, so if you can't get into the site, you might try again tomorrow.

Thank you.  I found the comment that you can store 20 books to read on the Kindle.  The story never said how many can be stored on the Nook, which I don't know the answer to.  I thought I could store more than 20.

I don't think that the article says that the Kindle can only hold 20 books but just used a random number as an example...I have almost 200 titles on my Kindle.  Okay, a lot are short stories, but I do have quite a few full-length books.

Here's the easiest answer - I care because these few people do great harm, posting stupid misinformation and causing other idiots to actually not purchase great discs.  I feel someone has to be there to level the playing field and while it's occasionally enjoyable to do it, I'd rather it be someone else - only there isn't anyone else willing to do it, apparently.
