Title: PONDERING THE FRENCH FRY
Post by: bk on March 02, 2010, 12:23:34 AM
Well, you've read the notes, the notes were ponderous and fried and even a little French, and now it is time for you to post until the french-fried cows come home.

Anyway, Tuesday morning greetings!  The snow is melting, finally, which will make my trip to Dayton for 2 grantwriter meetings pretty pleasant.

I am going on my regular shopping rounds today since I went grocery shopping yesterday.

I watch DWTS to see the choreography - it really is an accomplishment for those non-dancers to learn a routine or TWO in seven days, especially since many of them have many other commitments.

The CBS Monday night lineup now includes RULES OF ENGAGEMENT which is an improvement over that Jenna Elfman show - sort of....at least RULES has Patrick Warburton, a plus - but it also has David Spade, a minus for me.  I think it's because his character always reminds me of someone I used to work with in theatre, who thought that kind of attitude was cute and hip...when it really is annoying....

And a tale that probably does not telling.

Mainly because there is nothing to tell.

I actually also love to see the choreography, but for a different reason. I love to see what some of these pros can do. Some of them are incredible choreographers (like derek, cheryl, mark).  And near the end when some of the better celebs are left, it can be great to watch.

Yes, lots of new TV on tonight including a new WHITE COLLAR and new shows from all my favorites like NCIS and LOST.

I am giving up AMERICAN IDOL until they get down to the final twelve. There were so many poor to mediocre singers last week, and the worst ones were NOT sent home, so I'm not going to waste any more time with it until I see what they're left with. Once they get to the final twelve, I'll watch the first night of competition to see if any of THOSE people are worthy of continued viewing/listening.

Good morning, all! This has been another morning with unhappy news and I am feeling rather depressed over the whole nonsense.  I got an email this morning from the realtor in Ohio about his version of the phone call with my brother Randy, and he did indeed lie to me about the realtor's phone call. I'm very saddened by the news so I wrote Randy, and copied it to his wife who wants to sell the property as much as I do.

So, I'm mourning dead and missing friends, a resignation, sibling angst, and other failures and very unhappy over all of it. Tonight, I'm seeing Rebecca Luker in concert and some friends and colleagues, and I'm hoping that cheers me up. I have to head downtown shortly: I've got to pay my accountant and sign my tax returns, deal with an inquiry to my HMO, and do some edits with Skip Kennon at Toyland. I can only hope my spirits pick up.

I'll have to postpne work with MATT HUSTON today since I just got an armful of review discs from the UPS driver a couple of minutes ago. Among them are GENTLEMEN BRONCOS on Blu-ray from Fox (which came out today), BITCH SLAP! on DVD (also a today release, and doesn't IT sound promising), and Disney's THE PRINCESS AND THE FROG on Blu-ray which comes out on the 16th.

I loved PRESUMED INNOCENT from the time I saw it in the theater. Maybe because I guessed the identity of the murderer, I felt vindicated or something, but I found the whole thing well done.

I am also a great fan of FRANTIC, but because the DVD was full frame, I haven't watched it much.

I was going to buy that dual Blu-ray set for $17.99, but then Amazon upped the price $2, and I wasn't willing to pay it. I'll wait for a sale or markdown. Maybe it'll show up in my gold box.

Yes, that's an underwhelming list of "stars" for DANCING WITH THE STARS. With Evan Lysechek's participation (which I had heard rumors about), it's clear he won't be taking part in this year's world championships at the end of March. Ah well. He already can stake a claim to being a national, world, and Olympic champion. What's one more title?

TOD - I'm hoping against hope that I don't have real-life experience with courtroom drama next week or the next.  I'm on call for jury duty in our county's Court of Common Pleas, which means I have to call or check online starting this Friday to find out if I have to report the following business day.  I got out of this a few years ago because my work schedule was packed for the 2 weeks they wanted me, but this time I don't have a good excuse - unless my doctor tells me tomorrow that he can get me a medical waiver.

I watched some of THE SERGEANT with Mr Rod Steiger last night, but didn't make it through all of the movie.  Interesting but very strange.

My additional 9 DVD's from Hollywood Video arrived today.  Two of my BluRay PVP's were still in the wrapper....and all of the discs look fine....so I shall be watching some MOVIES tonight.

I was going to order two new Warner Archives titles, both clearly listed at 25% off on the new release page.  However, when they go into the cart they're full price and when you proceed to checkout they remain full price.  I've written them to see what's what.

Then I watched GENTLEMEN BRONCOS. It's made by the same husband and wife team that did NAPOLEON DYNAMITE. Both are about quirky, odd people living in a world that doesn't resemble real life. NAPOLEON was weird but its freshness took me by surprise and it was tolerable if not completely successful.

This is just painfully unfunny with good actors (Jennifer Coolidge, Sam Rockwell, Jemaine Clement) not used well. And the lead is played by Michael Angarano (who played Jack's son on WILL & GRACE). He's a graceless and rather bland actor, not someone I felt very comfortable with. (Jon Heder was the kid in NAPOLEON DYNAMITE and he was much more ingratiating.)

I had time to sample the commentary (unexceptional, rather uninteresting frankly) and look at all the bonus features: bloopers, five deleted scenes, a 15 minute behind-the-scenes documentary (not organized very well), and 18 little behind-the-scenes vignettes of 1-2 minutes each that were made to play on the Fox Movie Channel to promote the film.

When I go back down, I'll skim through today's soaps, I'll likely watch either CHUCK or one of the LAW & ORDER episodes, and then see how many MATT HUSTON episodes I can squeeze in before I start watching NCIS around 8:30.

Just had a call from the vet.  Sherlock's teeth are cleaned & the tooth she has been watching for a year did not need a root canal or pulling. :)

Our vet loves doing dental work & is getting a second dental degree.  Last year when we cleaned his teeth she couldn't have done the root canal she suspected he needed.  She has learned a lot since then, including how to be sure if he needed it.

We needed to get the cleaning done now since she is due to deliver her first child in April.  We/she didn't want to wait & risk her going into labor in the middle of a root canal.

They are probably going to cut USPS down to five days a week.  We only have mail here monday to friday. I don't know anything different as that is what i am used to. It sucks when you are waiting for something. BUt you get used to it.

They have talked about that for years.  I think they should just go ahead and be done with it.

DR Jeanne - If you primarily want to use your rice cooker to cook rice, just go to a Asian supermarket - or K-Mart - and buy the cheapest one you can find. You can find a small one for around $10-15.  They're very easy to use, and basically "set it and forget it".  Now, if you really want to get fancy and spend more than a couple more dollars on one with "fuzzy logic", well, more power to you.  -Black & Decker also makes a very basic model.

*I've tried using my rice maker for something other than rice, and, frankly, I'd rather use the stove top for things like soups, stew and such. -And if you look closely at some "fancier" recipes, they call for cooking the ingredients "elsewhere", and then combining and finish cooking them in the rice cooker. Not really a "one pot wonder".

John G., do you have a camera with a foot-long lens? Were these critters in a zoo?

I had two cameras with me on the trip. One was a Nikon Coolpix (the one that Ashton Kutcher did commercials for) with a 10x zoom lens and the other was a Sony with a 25x zoom lens, both rather regular cameras. And they were taken on safari, so the animals were in the wild and we were in a jeep just driving through their land.

The first day or two, it sort of felt like being in a Disneyland theme park ("Oh, I know you're going to say/The trees are papier mache ..."). But when we were charged by an angry elephant, it wasn't so zoo-like anymore. We stood our ground, as one is supposed to do (actually, we were in a jeep and really couldn't run anywhere anyway), and the elephant eventually went away, but he came awfully close.

Back from some errands and whatnot and picking up packages and a meal at the Studio Cafe.  The alarm system is working for the first time since I've moved in.  Now the question is will I use it - I definitely will start using it when I'm gone, but not until they give me the secret code for the response people - if they were to respond to an alarm and I didn't have it, that's big trouble.

the work session was tedious, but we got through the script and now the ball is in the author's court.  I'm sure I'll get pages as he goes, but there will be no more work sessions like today.

And now, I'm leaving work (early) to put up some shelves in my newly cleaned TV room so that I can get all (hopefully, all) of my DVDs out of boxes!

Until later. :)

Ginny, I would think you can get a medical release from jury duty.

Yeah, but I'd hate to let DR TCB down!  Actually, my doctor, a former school board member, will probably tell me to do it.

I guess I will just have to accept the fact that you are not perfect.

Last night I took my final dosage of sulpha drugs.  Since they didn't seem to work nearly as well this time around; I am fully expecting the MRSA to be back in about three to four weeks.

I am sure that all of us have higher (and in some cases lower) opinions of our friends here at HHW.  These are locked in our minds until we actually meet face to face.  Still, unless you arrived at my door with a martini in one hand and a fifty cent cigar (burning) in the other; I don't imagine my image of you would be tarnished.

Last November 30, my sister (and co-worker) retired from the State.  In the middle of January, they finally got around to posting for her position.  In the beginning of Februay, they finally scheduled interviews for the candidates; and yesterday my supervisor was finally ready to call and offer the job to his choice.

Guess What?  There is now a hiring freeze on all state jpbs until, at least, July!

I'm watching a motion picture on Blu and Ray.  I needed a sweet so I went to Gelson's - the bakery has a new thing - a teeny-tiny little thing of peanut butter pie, probably a small slice worth.  It was quite yummilicious and I should think I'll be having it quite quite often.

I am back from Rebecca's wonderful concert. I went with Zachary Stains, the naked Hercules, Billy Hicks, who was the secret behind a lot of John McGlinn's success, John Vogel, the McGlinn executor, and Michelle Churchill.

We had dinner at Rosa Mexicano, where the food was fantastic and the service a complete dud. On my way to the reception I ran into Skip Kennon, whom I adore and who introduced me to Steve Marzullo, who had two songs on the program. At the reception I talked to George Dvorsky, Danny Burstein, Howard McGillin, the fantastic Joseph Thalken, and a few others, and I got snubbed - again - by Judy Kuhn (third or fourth time now), who's never acknowleged I did anything for her "Just In Time" album, and clearly does not remember I was around for her tantrums. Where's her second recording, I ask you?

I love Howard McGillin. Will never forget how impressed I was with him in THE MYSTERY OF EDWIN DROOD. I have his autograph from SPIDER WOMAN, but I didn't see him in it. I saw the original cast. My friend Jeff got it for me when he saw SPIDER WOMAN a year after I saw it.

DR elmore - Yep, the service at the Lincoln Center Rosa Mexicano can be quite spotty to non-existent at times.  Thankfully(?), they do seem to have managers who listen to the complaints that any of their customers may have. Myself included. ;)

Alas, as much as I like the food at Rosa Mexicano, their portions have seemed to have gotten smaller over the years while their prices have gotten bigger.  And then there are their $15-$20(!) margaritas. :-\

*The cheapest way to enjoy RM's menu are the cook-at-home entrees that they market through Fresh Direct now.
