I hope you're right, Chas.  But then you do say that thing about the one time ina great while when you get (was it) suspicious and you are moved to look, and there you have it.  there are many people with way too much free time on the net, and all it takes is one person with too much free time out of hundreds who look at your list of recommendations.

SATIRE ALERT

Very importantly, to god for helping the winners of the various foot-races where god was thanked get to the head of the packs and get their medals, because of course - like the other losing nominees in the Tony and Oscar races - god doesn't watch over the other runners who don't come in first, second or third, god only watched over the three who get gold, silver or bronze.

Good morning, all.

Coffee!!

I really must needs grab a nap later.  Five hours sleep:  will.  not.  cut.  it.

But I had to be up in case The Driveway People come a'knockin' to tell me it's time to start the last phase which will require the moving of automobiles.  Still a little damp out there, so that probably won't happen for a while.  I will be very glad when this is over.

DR FJL, I wish I had a specific example of what I meant re Amazon.  It's not a typical review of a typical item.  Ever.  It's when there are gushing reviews of something widely known to be egregiously bad or dishonest, or an equivalently bizarre attack on something good.  It's something that stands out enough to raise the eyebrows of even a casual browser.

Oh, here's one.  A few years back someone issued a Blu-ray of the Fleischer animated GULLIVER'S TRAVELS, hawking it as an important advance in restoration using techniques that successfully transformed it into: widescreen!  All they had done was distort the picture by stretching it, and they actually issued it for sale that way.  In other words, here was a completely dishonest product, with a few people gushing about what a revelation it was, and going to great lengths attempting to deflect all negative comment about it.

I think I've also seen people shilling for bootlegs and other such things.  Wish I had examples.  But that's all I'm talking about.  Just plain (and fancy) dishonesty in reviewing.

Did anybody here watch the 4 X 100 men's relay race yesterday?

I was watching with my niece and she was super excited. Obviously Jamaica and US were going to win the gold and silver (unless they dropped the baton or got DQed). But it was still very exciting for the Canadian team to have a chance for 3rd.

Anyhow the Canadian team did finish 3rd and my niece was jumping up and down. And they took out the Canadian flags and it was very exciting. We've only won 1 gold at these Olympics. But in this case winning a bronze was really like winning a gold.

They put up the official results and then about 10 minutes later they put up on the board that Canada was DQed.

My niece was inconsolable saying "i don't want to be disqualified". She was basically in tears. It's hard to explain to a 6 year old how these things work. My biggest problem with it is don't put the results up until it's official. That's how it's usually done if anything is questionable.

It was such a big disappointment and very upsetting, especially because my niece was so upset. What an amazing result it would have been.

But some more exciting news for Canada today. They chose the flagbearer for the Closing Ceremonies. And it was my choice.

You'd think it would be the only gold medal winner. But to me it's more about whose win had the greatest impact. They chose Christine Sinclair, from the Women's bronze medal soccer team. She scored 3 goals in the semi-final game against the US (where the US won in the last few seconds of OT).

I'll probably do my usual hemming and hawing and procrastinating until BK comes to New York and asks me at Joe Allen's why I haven't posted my review yet and I have no answer and finally just do it.  That often works quite well.

It's time like that which make me wonder if people are too wrapped up in feeling the accomplishments of people who HAPPEN to be from their countries actually represent their countries as opposed to being individual accomplishments.

I certainly never feel when an American individual does something terrible or criminal that he or she represents Americans as a group.  I don't quite understand  why the opposite should be the case, why an individual's accomplishment should be attributed to his country.  but it seems to be the way the world wants to see it.

Is it at all possible that it gets repeated because apparently God had wanted DREAMGIRLS to win, according to an earlier post, and nothing can really change that?  I wonder if ultimately the space and time continuum will have been adjusted to reflect that retroactive shift, so powerful is the force of Michael Bennett and Jennifer Holliday.

I've had my nap and I'm lazily wandering about. I'm not sure how I like the lodging but I think it's a beautiful Georgian building. My window looks out on the set for "Step In Time" from MARY POPINS: I have a great view of Dublin rooftops and chimneys.

The staff here is young and inexperienced. The young man at reception cannot transfer a call to my room, so I needed to go to reception to speak on the phone!

One thing I learned from a book about Billy Wilder is that if a character is supposed to be from a certain city or locale, and the research dept. finds a person in that city with that exact name....the name is changed.

Maybe there was a Dr. McKenzie or other character name....Jo.... in Indianapolis at the time, so they became the  McKenna family.....

Been thinking about this, and I will say that "The Man Who Knew Too Much" is the second Hitchcock film I ever saw, or the second that I was aware of actually being a Hitchcock film.  It was on a re-release double bill with "The Trouble With Harry" in May 1963, at the Warnor Theatre in Fort Lauderdale.  I was thrilled with it.  "Harry", not so much.  Had a few years to go before I could appreciate that one.

I credit "Rear Window" as my very first Hitch, by virtue of having seen it on B&W TV a few times in those years.

It's odd that I wouldn't at least have seen "Psycho" in the couple of years before that.  I think the re-release I finally saw it on occurred just after the above.
Title: Re: THE OVEN

Still musing over this.  Maybe I simply wasn't allowed to see "Psycho"earlier.  My parents were a bit protective when it came to such things.  I remember most definitely being forbidden to go to "Doctor No".  "Goldfinger" was my first Bond, and boy, was I thrilled at that one.  Went to it multiple times.

Okay, one more.  The only "Man Who Knew Too Much" material I have is a complete set of the 8x10 color photos (assuming those came in sets of eight), again purchased at Larry Edmund's for a song, circa 1973.  And one lobby card which would be a lot nicer if its previous owner hadn't somehow scratched a thin line across a few inches of it.  The scratch is kind of interesting, though -- the photo is of Louis with the knife in his back and the McKennas looking on, and the way it's composed, the scratch looks like a "motion" line, as though someone had just thrown the knife, "North by Northwest" style.

I love THE MAN WHO KNEW TOO MUCH.....although the time frame from Jo's last professional appearance in London, and her marriage and the age of her son seems a bit rushed....  I though one of the friends says something like "five years ago...." or something like that, and the son is obviously seven or eight.....

DR DOUG R - the NBC American coverage of the Olympics is not getting very good reviews.....and reports of the British coverage make it sound like the criticism is justified.

Most under fire are the commentators and the unnecessary "fluff" pieces on the athletes.

I understand the reasons for tape delay, and I don't mind that....but I wish NBC did have better talking heads and/or writers.

BK,

THE MAN WHO KNEW TOO MUCH is one of my favorite Hitchcock films.

It is also one of my favorite Hitchock films.

It is also one of my favorite Hitchcock films.

Is that the one where Jimmy Stewart stabs Doris Day to death in the shower?

Yes, that's the one.

I love THE MAN WHO KNEW TOO MUCH.....although the time frame from Jo's last professional appearance in London, and her marriage and the age of her son seems a bit rushed....  I though one of the friends says something like "five years ago...." or something like that, and the son is obviously seven or eight.....

True, but all of Jo's friends are drunks.

Last night our BlueRay experience was rather disappointing.  I greatly hope it had to do with the film we watched and not the quality of BlueRay.  We watched HAYWIRE.  When the plot was finally explained we still didn't have a clue to the why, on my part because I couldn't understand what the actor was saying.

Wasn't there also a autobiography called HAYWIRE?

After the performance, we have to strike the set and clean out the theater.  HOPEFULLY, everyone will actually help and we can get it all done quite quickly.  There's supposed to be a party at the home of the guy playing Titus, but I haven't decided if I'll go.  I probably will, but we'll see.

Anyway, have a great day all! ;D

I am in what DR Chas so aptly calls "AC lockdown"--windows shut, blinds largely closed, AC on. I hate being cooped up all day, but it's just miserable out. I took a Taco Walk yesterday and it was HOT!! The weather report said 82, but it felt more like 90.

What's going on out there?  Santa Anas, or is this just some plain old August?

When I lived in Redondo I had no AC, and there was only about one week of the year, which I think was always in August, when there was humidity with the heat and I really would have enjoyed having it.

Not Santa Anas--just ordinary HEAT! It doesn't feel particularly humid to me, but I've never been comfortable in hot weather. I don't know how I lived on the East Coast for 20 years, but I had whole-house AC, and it's better than just a window unit. I don't turn on the AC very often, but when you need it you need it!

DR Chas, I grew up in Culver City and we usually had nice breezes off the ocean. No one had AC in those days; we just used fans. But we sweated during these heat waves, too. Everyone complained of the heat. As an area builds up and gets more populated I think it feels hotter--fewer breezes reach you, more heat is retained in the asphalt, etc. City heat just seems worse than suburban heat.

"The Man Who Knew Too Much" & "To Catch a Thief".  "Harry" is an odd one that I don't recall seeing until it was on tv.

It's odd that I wouldn't at least have seen "Psycho" in the couple of years before that.  I think the re-release I finally saw it on occurred just after the above.

I'm sure I wasn't permitted to see this, not that I wanted to.  I still haven't watched it.  My mother took me to see "The Birds".

Did anybody ever notice how some of the small roles are double cast?

 :o

I think that's Leo Gordon who grabs Stewart in the Ambrose Chapel (church) scene, but outside it appears to be another actor.

Also, Milton Frome lets the Draytons into the embassy, but it's a different actor who goes into the kitchen.

Parts of the scenes, I assume, were shot in London and other parts in Hollywood.

The magic of movies.

Also, Milton Frome lets the Draytons into the embassy, but it's a different actor who goes into the kitchen.

Parts of the scenes, I assume, were shot in London and other parts in Hollywood.

The magic of movies.

Interesting.

I just checked the imdb.

It was Gordon and Frome.

Finished another superb Cracker, whose guest stars were a fourteen-year-old Samantha Morton and Jim Carter, Mr. Carson of Downton Abbey.

Job vibes or Craig, DakotaCelt and all of us in need. (I'm still waiting for them to post a full-time position I could apply for where I work, instead of living eternally on the edge as a contractor, though that has been OK.)

Spent the evening filling out a Zagat survey on bars in town. (They bought an ad on our website, so I felt a need to do it.) Anyway, all this writing about drinks (I ended up writing 50 briefs) made me very thirsty. Negroni time.

Vibes to George on his Titus coming to an end

Thanks, Fred!  We had a very good ending with a great audience...and the strike went quickly.  We also had one last review...a very good friend of Pug's (the director) who saw the show this weekend wrote THIS (http://jamesastaples.tumblr.com/post/29279669282) on his blog. :D

We are watching the Olympics closing ceremony and Richard just said, "I'm clearly not the audience for this!"

Dammit!  I set my DVR to tape both "Falling Skies" and the closing ceremonies.  My DVR recorded "Falling Skies" without any trouble, but while it was supposed to record the closing ceremonies, it didn't.  The DVR was on but it wasn't recording.  When I turned on my TV, the screen was black where a 4:3 image would go (even though it was on a hi-def widescreen channel) and you could see the sides of the image and hear the sound.  I couldn't do anything...couldn't change the channel, couldn't swap to the other tuner, couldn't get to the "My DVR" section.  All I could do was turn off the power and turn it back on.  Only then did it start recording and from that point.  There was no recording up to that point, so I just stopped the recording.  There was no point to record the rest of it.

:P is what I say to that! >:(
