Title: THE LAUNDRY LIST
Post by: bk on January 07, 2004, 12:02:29 AM
Well, you've read the notes, good folks that you are, and now you're ready to post until the cows come home, or at least until the cows are on their way.  So, post away, and I'll join you from edit bay number four.

BK, I don't have any questions for you yet. Perhaps later. Goodnight to all!

But I have answers.  Oh, do I have answers.  For example, one answer I have is only when there are beans in the burrito.  I leave it to you to figure out the question.  Question me an answer, baby.

I, for one, would like to know more about those pictures from Mars.

Every time I see what I think are pictures from Oz on TV, it turns out to be animation from NASA about what they "think" things looked like when their equipment approached, and then landed on, Mars.

I want the real deal.

Are we getting the real deal, BK?

Huh?  Huh?  Is the real deal out there?

If it is, where do I have to look to see the real deal?

DR Tom of Oz:  Why are you lurking?  Are you catching up on the plethora of posts?

Are you wondering what in the frell most of us were talking about when we pushed the posts into the plethorasphere?

If you don't answer, who're you gonna talk to when we go to bed here on the Westernmost Coastline of the Newnited States?

I saw pictures of Mars.  I saw England, I saw France, I saw someone's underpants.  They were cotton, of course.

Mars is the Angry Red Planet, that is all I know.  No, that is not true - I also know that Mars Needs Women, and all the single women on Mars hang out at bars.  Yes, Virginia, there are Mars Bars.

Have you noticed that tomovoz is just being contrary and not posting.  Perhaps he is looking at pictures of Mars.

Maybe Tom of Oz is munching on a Mars bar!

If I had a Mars bar, I'd be munching on it right now!

I've been peckish all day!

I wonder if they sell Mars bars in bars on Mars!

Ooh!  THAT's a deep thought, too!

Do Martians even have bars????

All right, everyone, here's a question I put off earlier because it wasn't a very holiday-y thing to ask:

What is your favorite personal disaster story?

Anything from an earthquake...to a hurricane...to a bad hair day...to going into a recording studio with Carol Channing...or is that the same thing?
Title: Re:THE LAUNDRY LIST
Post by: Ron Pulliam on January 07, 2004, 12:29:33 AM
I wonder, also:  Do Martians spell their name as M-a-r-t-i-a-n-s?

Or do they prefer "M-a-r-s-i-a-n-s"?

That would make them "mar'zeeuns", wouldn't it!

But maybe we have it all wrong.

Maybe it's not "Mars" at all, but maybe it's "Maris."

In that case, they would be "Marisians."

"I don't understand the Marisians!
"Making war everytime they get the chance!"

All right.

It's bedtime.

I thought we were going to roll here, but things got quiet.

Tom of Oz disappeared.

S. Woody asked a question that's beyond my tired brain's capacity to tackle at this moment.

And I'm guessing BK got diverted!  Oh, yes!  He can be diverted!

Ooh!  Look!  Shiny object!  Shiny object!  Ain't it purty!

That, or he's listening to one of his multi-thousands of CDs or concurrently watching one of his multi-thousands of DVDs or he's talking on the phone or worse yet, he's found a chat room somewhere and he's having cyberconversation.

Now...do I wait for it to cool off or do I clean it up all steamy?

That last question -- that was for Ask BK!

Your call, Bruce.

What would you do?  Get it when you won't feel the 100-degree heat coming off it, or wait until later in the morning and clean it up cold?

Alone again!

That's right.  Just me, myself and I on this here board right this minute.

Everyone else has deserted.

So...why aren't I in bed?

Because I'm nauseous, yes.  My cat yakked her guts onto my living room carpet and now wants to cuddle on my bed.

Sure.  That's gonna happen.    NOT!

Gross out!

Good night, though.

I mean it this time.

Hmmm... Ron.... Hmmm...

Well, I went ahead and reviewed the nice full arrangement I worked on, and then decided to give the demo recording another listen.  Oopps!!  For some reason I had a different beginning - note-wise - to the main hook of the melody.  AAGGHH!!  So, I went back and changed - corrected it wherever it needed to be corrected.  All is better now.  I hope.  I almost got another chart finished, but then I couldn't remember what the melody sounded like anymore.. So... then I came on here... And read about Dr Ron's cat woes... And now I'm going to bed... I think...

*Oh, I did take my brother's dog out about an hour ago so he could take a pee (can I say "pee" here?).  Beautiful night outside.  Cold(!), but a clear sky and a beautiful full moon!  Or at least a very nearly full moon.

Hmm.... A Full Moon... And a very high number of posts...  See!!! There's the actual scientific proof that the Full Moon does cause people to act "strangely"... Well, maybe not... at least not on here.. It seems most H/Ks - myself included - are already strange.  Ah, well...

I need sleep!  Goodnight!

Hmm.... Now I'm all alone...

Oh, just wanted to say that my brother Mike's dog - (my brother being Mike, and his dog being Iki) - is quite "homesick" right now.  My brother, Mike, and his wife, Veronica, and their two kids, John Michael and Alyssa, went to Puerto Rico last Saturday for a few weeks to visit Vero's family.  So, Iki is a little depressed right now.  There's nothing more pitiful than a pitiful chihuahua.  :(

Wasn't I going to bed?????

Don't you people sleep!!! I'm going to have to start coming in early againg just to catch up on the posts. I left the office at 4pm yesterday, didn't have a chance to log on last night and I arrive this morning to find 400 posts. Wow (or Wowza as a certain Virginian/DCer might say)!

No questions yet but I'm sure I'll be back. I must now go wash my bowl. I had oatmeal and raisins for breakfast with a cup of black coffee. I ate it whilst (I love those English turns of phrase) perusing the plethora of posts on this here board.

Back later.

I'm back already. I washed my bowl and I'm ready to post, er, work. Darn this job. It keeps interrupting my posting schedule.

The cold weather afflicting many other parts of the U.S. has arrived in NY although it's not THAT cold. It is winter after all and having grown up in Minnesota, temps in the 20s don't phase me. Just dress appropriately and wear a hat or a hood.

I have to check the size of my picture of Ant and me at Tower Bridge in London. It shows me in a stylish blue English duffle coat with hood, purchased 20 years during my first trip to London. I'll post it if I can get it down to a reasonable size.

These are really important questions, and they're for DR Ben:

Do steel-cut oats make for superior oatmeal? And at what point do you add the raisins?

Title: Re:THE LAUNDRY LIST
Post by: Ben on January 07, 2004, 05:42:38 AM
I like the steel-cut oats because they are higher in fiber and they don't turn as mushy when you cook them. When I cook the oatmeal in the microwave (cooking in the microwave is a loose use of the term cook), I add the raisins after I've put in the water and then I let it sit for a minute to let the raisins plump up. If I'm cooking in a pot on the stove I let the oatmeal cook for a while and then around the last two minutes I drop in the raisins.

You can just make out the stylish blue wool hood on the coat. Helps to keep the cold off of my ears. For some reason, if my ears get cold, I get cold all over and then I get cranky, and you don't want to see me when I'm cranky.

Besides doing the work for which I am paid (which I'm not doing right now) I need to finish writing my 90 second review of Chitty Chitty Bang Bang for BBC Radio Wales. Writing 90 second reviews is HARD. I don't know when the review will air but I'm taping it tomorrow morning along with some other reviews of shows I've seen recently.

Enough of this posting frenzy (my posting frenzy anyway). I need to get back to work.

Good morning DRs!  When do the figure skating nationals start?  I suppose I could look it up myself, but it is ask DR day..

I don't follow the sport as closely as I used to.. sort of like DR Ron, I stopped caring so much after a lot of my favorite skaters turned pro/retired/etc., but since a lot of you are going to tune in I might watch just to be able to follow the conversation.  Does anyone here watch tennis?

DR Ron - your comment about triple loops was really insightful!  That is the jump Kristi Yamaguchi fell on during the Olympics, marring an otherwise flawless program.  And it wasn't even supposed to be her weak jump - that was the salchow.

OK, now that I sound like a huge dork, I am going to skate off to do some work.

About those pictures from Barsoom...oh, alright...you can keep calling it "Mars" if it lets you sleep at night.  But those of us in the know know better...

I can only assume these probes haven't landed in any of the inhabited regions of Barsoom, which are simply swarming with four-armed Green Men astride their eight-legged mounts.  I fully expect the probe to be attacked by Ras Thavas' Synthetic Men any moment now.  Let those NASA goons explain that away...!

Mars, uninhabited???   I think not!

Yes, JRand, I think you're right. I saw Len Cariou at Barrymore's in NYC just before we left for England and he was talking about Kismet and he mentioned a new actor from Indiana who might be joining the cast. They would be sending the contract in the mail. You should be getting them any day now. ;)

State offices closed until 10:00 I am told by my supervisor...so now I can go back to bed for awhile! On the news they are reporting that state offices are opening at noon...who to believe.

It is so icy outside...the snow is covered with a beautiful and strange layering of ice and large icicles hanging off the house and car and fence. It looks neat, but I guess is not a lot of fun to drive on.

An early morning post - then probably not much for the rest of the day.

On Friday will be the two month anniversary of my return to LA. I believe they're planning a parade in Studio City with bk as Grand Marshal. He will be riding in a spiffy red convertible with my dog, Abie (dressed as Carmen Miranda) sitting beside him. I shall take photos.

Will be out and about and BUSY for much of the day. Am trying to get tickets for an American Cinematheque screening of 21 GRAMS tonight at the Egyptian. My daughter has been wanting to see the movie and this will be a special screening with a Q&A following with two of the film's stars, Naomi Watts and Benicio Del Toro (whom daughter adores). This would be a real treat for her, so being the fantastic-kind-sweet generous mother that I am, I'm trying to make it happen. Other than that, must go to the post office and do various and sundried errands and must busily WAIT for my script notes which still have not materialized. Then I must make arrangements for a visit tomorrow to Rancho Cucomonga. How could a place have such a ridiculous name, I ask you? Do the Marx Brothers live there? I certainly hope so. That would make the visit much fun.

Yes, Kristi did fall on a triple loop, and right afterward, she doubled her salchow so she wouldn't have two potential falls in a row - very wise move on her part.

In the worlds a month after the Olympics, she made the triple loop and attempted the triple salchow and fell on it. At the 1992 US Nationals, she made her only triple salchow in competition.

Dick Button was in la-la land when he said Kristi could do triple loops in her sleep. They're very hard because you take off on a back outside edge and land on a back outside edge on the same foot, thus having to propel yourself into the air with just the strength in that one leg you're jumping and landing on. Other jumps give you some momentum from a combination of both legs' strength but the loop doesn't. Karen Cadavy did the most beautiful triple loops I've ever seen.

And my second question:  Why will only SOME DR's be intrigued by your internet announcement and your new book project?
Title: Re:THE LAUNDRY LIST

DR MATTH - I think Dick Button has resided in la la land for many skating seasons!

I don't like the personalities of many of the women skaters - and a lot of the men just don't seem to have any fun skating.  My favorite has always been Kurt Browning!

Michael Weiss and Timothy Goebel.....I guess I like Timothy best and his artistry is improving.  Michael is NOT consistent, but I will give him this, when he made the US Olympic team - the others talked about "me" "I" and "mine" and Weiss is the only one who referred to the group as "us" and a "team."
Title: Re:THE LAUNDRY LIST
Post by: LC on January 07, 2004, 07:49:55 AM
Thanks Jrand!  I will record the coverage with my handy-dandy DVR.

DR MattH - Kristi's mother made a bet with her that during the 1992 Nationals Kristi wouldn't land the salchow, and when she did land it, her mom had to shell out $100. :)  I guess, though, it didn't work for future competitions..

Did you ever skate yourself?  Most people that I know don't have such technical knowledge of the sport.

Title: Re:THE LAUNDRY LIST
Post by: Matt H. on January 07, 2004, 07:57:54 AM
No, I've never skated myself, but I always wanted to, and I've watched and studied the sport for many decades. I've had lots of favorites through the years.

Michael Weiss is definitely the most artistic and expressive of our current men's group, but his technical prowess has been ebbing for years. He won the national championship last year by default simply because NO ONE skated well in the finals. I hate years like that, when the entire championship is an embarrassment to the sport. Hopefully, we'll see some new stars emerge this year. That's always exciting, when an Aren Nielsen or Scott Davis or Mark Mitchell comes out of nowhere and does a wonderful program. I'll never forget being so impressed with Tonya Harding in an early performance. Little did I know how dreadful her later skating (and behind the scenes graft) would become.

QUESTION FOR BK:
In an interview about his Kennedy Center Honor, Mike Nichols reflected on the creative process ...
I am extremely interested in what happens when we are not thinking about something. Time is one of the most important tools we have. Not only time spent slogging at the task, but time spent not doing so. In making movies, time is so short--because it is so expensive--that we tend to neglect the place from which the best ideas come, namely that part of ourselves that dreams. The unconscious is our best collaborator. I try to let the participants have downtime before shooting and after rehearsal, so our secret collaborator can do its work. I have learned to trust and encourage that more.

I suspect that is similar to how you work also. Care to elaborate on your creative modus operandi?

P.S. Hi Everybody!

Wow, congrats everyone on so many posts yesterday!  Sorry to have been E&T...I've been spending a lot of time with my friends who are back from college, and who will be going back on Sunday.  And then on Monday, I start classes again too...*sigh*...(where has the time all gone to?  Haven't done half the things I want to...)

I love watching figure skating, although I can't tell a lutz from an axel.  I'm also shallow and like the pretty costumes.

Hmmm....a question for BK, let me see....are there any musical theatre songs that make you cry?
Title: Re:THE LAUNDRY LIST

Dick Button is always in la la land.  He is enough to make me only watch Nationals on ABC and skip all other skating events televised on that network.

***

For Ask BK Day (and I'd like other DRs to also chime in):

Yesterday Ken Mandelbaum reviewed the new biography of Joan McCracken and he said that for years he always wanted to read a good biography of Ms. McCracken and also of Betty Hutton.  What show business personality would you like to read a good biography of?  ...not an "as told to" puff piece nor a so-called exposé, but a well researched life story of the subject both professionally and personally.

(As BK would say) I'll start.  I'd love a good bio of Gwen Verdon.  I'd like to be able to understand how this talented woman allowed herself to be abused by Jack Cole; why she spent much of her career as Bob Fosse's assistant/gofer instead of performing herself; why she never divorced Fosse even though they didn't live together through most of their marriage; and why she not only tolerated Fosse's numerous infidelities but also became friendly with many of his girlfriends.  Perhaps a good bio could help explain this beloved performers low self-esteem.

Now who would you like to read about and why?
Title: Re:THE LAUNDRY LIST
Post by: William E. Lurie on January 07, 2004, 08:04:05 AM
By the way, getting back to skating, Michael Weiss is known as the biggest homophobe is skating today, although from his choice of costumes perhaps what he condems most in others is what he fears most in himself.

I did not know that about Michael Weiss.  You wonder how one can survive in such a sport being outspokenly homophobic.

No, I've never skated myself, but I always wanted to, and I've watched and studied the sport for many decades. I've had lots of favorites through the years.

I'll never forget being so impressed with Tonya Harding in an early performance. Little did I know how dreadful her later skating (and behind the scenes graft) would become.

That's very impressive.  I can tell the jumps apart and the names of the moves, and I know when I think something looks well-executed or it doesn't, but I'm not an expert by any means.  However, I do consider myself qualified to shout at the TV when the judges or commentators don't agree with me.  :P

I too used to think Tonya Harding was a formidable skater.  It's hard to remember, given her later behaviour.  I really enjoyed her triple axel rivalry with Midori Ito.  Generally, I think I am stuck in the early 1990s, pre-Boitano rule, because all my favorite skaters were from then.

I think that's more gossip than true about Michael Weiss, WEL. Yes, he makes no bones about being straight and parades his two children at every competition like some kind of badge of honor.

On the other hand, he stayed with choreographer Brian Wright, openly gay and afflicted with AIDS, long after other skaters dropped him, until he in fact was too ill to work further. He deserves some props for that kind of loyalty.

I wouldn't have MINDED partnering with Tyrone Power when HE appeared in some of her films, however.  :)

Who is this "Kristi" person you're talking about????????

DR Ben - how observant!  I am standing in the Olympic Stadium in Barcelona from the 1992 Olympics.  (The picture was taken on my trip to Spain last fall.)  It was a very impressive sight, and it is still used for sporting events and concerts.  Since you asked, yes, I went down to the track and ran the 15,000 meter relay I did not display any athletic prowess while there - I was actually sick for the whole trip - unless you count buying a postcard and posing for the picture.  I am just about the least athletic person on the planet.  ;)

BTW, I forgot to mention, great pic of London!

I think it would be fair to say that Michael Weiss' father is probably the homophobe, but he's out there supporting his son no matter what.

Weiss used to be defiantly stiff on the ice -- fists clenched, overly exaggerated "masculine" mannerisms.  But something changed.  It may be because he married.  It may be because he "bred" a child.  But he softened on ice...he relaxed.  Suddenly, he wasn't afraid to incorporate grace into his program.

I used to despise him, and then I saw him skate the most amazing and graceful program and I totally turned around in my opinion about him.  It felt like he finally relaxed and was serious about skating the best he could.

But his lack of consistency IS infuriating.

Kurt Browning is stuck in Portland with the rest of humanity due to the ice and PDX (the airport) cancelling all flights.  They interviewed him last night on the news.

Tonya Harding has had a nose job--has anyone else noticed?  Compare current pics to her from several years ago.  The first time we noticed this was when she was on The Weakest Link.  My wife was a news anchor for the station in Portland that broke the Harding story.  I was in the newsroom with her one day when a reporter came in and divulged he had been able to intercept calls her coach had made to her attorney on a cellphone revealing much interesting information.  Can you believe these sneaky reporter types?  The Harding story is one of the reasons my wife left the news business--it had become All Tonya, All the Time 24/7 and it got to be rather a drag.

I figure it is the job of the athletes to run around the stadium, and mine to be a spectator.  Isn't the Olympic Stadium in Athens from 1896?  I think they have built another one for this year, so you will have to go and run around that one.

Dear me, how did everything become all about Olympic figure skaters today?

The only one I ever had anything to do with was Dorothy Hamill, whose cute pixie cut I adopted at the age of 7 (after my older cousin convinced me that Noxema in the hair wouldn't wash out...it had to be CUT out).  I wouldn't know a triple axle from a figure 8.

Good Morning!

This will have to be a quick post since I want to get at least one and a half charts done this afternoon... Then I will call it a day - for now - on this project.  I'll probably do some more work on it this weekend, but from home in Richmond.  There's still one piece that needs to be transcribed in a way, but due to some script and staging concerns it's still in a very amorphous state - as opposed to an amorous state (kind of like when I look at MBarnum's pic ;-) )

RE: Michael Weiss - He trains right up the road from my parents' house in Fairfax, and if I remember correctly, his family runs a gym.  Workout anyone?  -I've also seen him and his family out shopping at the Mall a few times.  Great smile - and he's actually doing radio spots for a "soft touch" dentist in the area right now.

RE: Kurt Browning - That exhibition routine he does to "Brick House"... and in those leather (faux or otherwise) pants... (I'll stop there... for now...)

RE: Skating jumps - I usually watch figure skating whenever it's on, but I still can't tell one jump from another.  I remember during the Salt Lake City Olypics they did a nice breakdown of all the jumps, complete with slow-motion computer and live action demonstrations.  But once things got back up to speed, it was all Greek to me - or maybe Norwegian.  ???

For Ask BK Day:

When you compose and/or arrange a song, how "filled out" is your initial sketch - or even second of third draft?  Or do you, like myself, tend to keep a lot of things in your head, and then put them into the final product?

OK - It's Noon here on the East Coast... Time to work...  Back later.

You won't believe it, dear readers - I can barely believe it myself and yet it is true so I must.  I, BK, have just performed a triple lutz.  I received a large applause from those who witnessed said lutz.

Jrand: Yes, Benjamin does appear in plays.

MattH: Amazingly, I don't think I've ever seen an episode of Green Acres.  It was one of Vinnie's favorites, though.

Re Mike Nichols dreams and the creative process: I don't know that I've gotten great creativity from actual dreams themselves (although I've used actual dreams in all three Kritzer books) but I do get some amazing ideas and thoughts as I'm lying in bed awaiting sleep - I've  taken to keeping a pad next to my bed and I actually wrote some of the best stuff for all three books just before nodding off.  Sentences, words, plot points - it's really my favorite time.  I finally narrowed down what I'm about to write whilst lying in bed at bedtime, and I've been figuring out all the details then, too.

That drew a lot of us "ice fans" out into the open, that's all.

The conversation can go wherever the wind blows it...that's what makes this forum fun.  Last night, it went from the various ice skating jumps to a fantasia on Mars, and now it's back again.

I saw Kurt Browning in a TV special recently (it may have been the retrospective of Stars on Ice), but Kurt Browning was on the ice with several other skaters including Ilia Kulik.

Kurt Browning is small.  I mean, he's diminutive.  He has such a long, lean, lanky look on ice but pitted against other skaters, you see the reality.  He probably has -0.002 body fat!

Christopher Bowman - someone I'd rather not think about. I always found him obnoxious on the ice and another one whose talent was squandered due to a lack of discipline and drive. (He had plenty of drive - for all the wrong things instead of training.)

His current size is no surprise to me. Over the course of two or three years even when he was skating, he gained an enormous amount of weigt, one reason why he got to the point he could no longer even attempt triple axels. He was just too tall and thick to be able to revolve in the air 3 1/2 times and land cleanly.

Yes, I remember Toller Cranston well. He and John Curry, the great English champion (who is my all-time favorite male skater - world and Olympic champion), dueled throughout the mid-70s. Toller's jumps were inconsistent, but his artistry was astounding. John wasn't quite as artistic as Toller but his jumps were more solid and he did more triples.

The year Toller coached Christopher Bowman was the only two sets of programs I could ever STAND seeing Christopher do. And that was the one year he landed triple axels.

My source on Michael Weiss was a book I read about five years ago.  I'm at work so I can't look up the name and author, but it was a woman who has written several books on skating.  She interviewed dozens of skaters for the book which was an overview of skating at the time.  Apparently Weiss has never gone on record as being anti-gay, but has made many remarks in private about being staight in a gay sport.  Since this was a few years ago he may very well have either changed his attitude by now or at least shut up about it within earshot of reporters or gay skaters.

I'm still waiting for some replies to my question regarding who DRs (and BK) would like to read a good biography of.

Lulu: I don't know all that much Harlow, other than the two movies made about her.  Six symbol-wise, I like  most Marilyn films, especially Some Like it Hot and The Seven Year Itch.

When I do arrangements of songs, I either sit at the piano and figure them out (like intros and rideouts and the layout of the song) or I sit with the musical director and hum what I hear and he notates it.  My favorite story (which I've told here before) is figuring out the "flying ballet" section of I'm Flying/You Can Fly on my Peter Pan album - it came to me full blown while walking down Broadway and I called Todd Ellison from a pay phone and hummed the whole thing onto his answering machine, complete with all the "quotes" from other flying songs (ET, Can You Read My Mind, etc.).  It was hilarious.

Years ago, I read an interview or short "bio" of Gwen Verdon and she talked about having problems with her legs or feet when she was a child and being required to wear special shoes or braces and that really deep-sixed her self-esteem, so much so that she carried that with her for her entire life....  Sad.

Bingo, DR Ben!  Oddly enough, I remember the photo session as being one I was not happy to participate in.  I don't recall why, but I do recall NOT wanting to smile for the a-hole taking the picture.

Now, because everyone else was running pix of their "babies" earlier, I'm going to attempt to put up a pic of my "Dickens" when he was 7 weeks old.  He is no longer with me, having died in October 1975 at the age of 8.  But he WAS my precious.....

I think that Michael Weiss' attitude was certainly understandable, considering that male figure skaters, along with male ballet dancers, have always been presumed gay, unless proven otherwise.  I don't know if the percentage of gay male figure skaters is actually higher than in other professions, but even I tend to make assumptions about male skaters without really knowing anything about them.  It is probably not a sport that many homophobic fathers would ideally pick for their sons to pursue.  I have never really known any figure skaters, but over the years I have known several straight-male ballet dancers.  Many of them have questioned their own sexual preference, at one time or another, merely because of the perception of not only the public, but from others within their own art form.

Finally!  It took me umpty-squat number of tries, but I finally got a decent size so the forum didn't widen into Technirama.

Dickens was a one-person cat!  He was totally different with me than with anyone else.  That's because I got him when he was four weeks old.  The first picture I ran was his first outing after I'd had him for a couple of weeks.  I was washing/waxing my car and I placed him on the wall by the drive to watch me.  He was SO excited.  I got my camera and took a few shots, and then he raised up on his hind legs to look at something and I snapped this shot.  It's my favorite photo I've taken.

Neil Simon has asked Nathan Lane and Matthew Broderick to co-star in a 2005 Broadway revival of THE ODD COUPLE, possibly each alternating as Oscar and Felix.  They have neither accepted nor refused the offer yet.

By the way, Simon personally called the actors.  He did not send his wife with a letter.

Dickens came to me in September 1987.  In the spring of 1988, I took in Vickie (who was four that year) to be a companion.  Dickens never really took to her, but he accepted the fact that she was there.  They had a love-hate relationship that saw Dickens tolerate several indignities, including Vickie lying on top of him whenever he settled into a favorite spot.

This photo was on the back porch of my parents' home in Virginia in 1993  (my folks moved back to South Carolina in November of that year).  As you can see in the photo, Dickens was a big boy...and Vickie assumed whatever position he would tolerate!  Amusingly enough, her out-of-sight hindquarters were pressed against a cold window....but she was happy.

I just got back from a delicious lunch of pastina with sun dried tomatoes and a glass of iced tea. After the pastina I ate an apple. I have to readjust my eating habits, having thrown all good sense to the wind during the England trip. I ate everything put in front of me, including Toad in a Hole, Bubble and Squeak, Bangers and Mash and my favorite Spotted Dick (a la mode even). When the pictures are ready I'll post one or two of them.

And while we are still on the subject of skating, does anyone else remember the Canadian pairs team of Barbara Underhill and Paul Martini?  They were the perfect combination of artistry and athletics.  She was beautiful, he was handsome and together it was like watching them make love on ice (even though both were happily married to others).   I have never seen a pair of skaters like them.

Dr Ron, my gosh, that first photo of Dicken's as a young un is worthy of entering into a photo contest! Seriously, it should be in one of those calendars! Very cute...and Dicken's grew into a fine looking adult feline!

Well, they finally decided to NOT open state offices at all...so now I am baking brownies with walnuts and will soon enjoy some motion picture enteratainment on DVD. I am also taping at this moment, Day of the Dolphins.

And to show that I am an animal lover from way back, here is a photo of me and my first cat Salty in 1969 when I lived on Griffin Creek Road in Medford. Sadly, Salty passed away soon after this shot was taken...expiring beneath the wheels of my teenage sisters Volkswagon bug (although at the time I a was told that Salty was kicked by a cow...the true story not told to me until just a few years ago...my sister still does not admit to any involvment in the tragedy).

Yes, it was awful to see them fail in their Olympic bid, but how great that they were able to win the world championships.  All because Barbara changed skates, too, and was unhappy about the "Olympic skates."  It took Brian Orser's "Why don't you just use the old skates?" to help them make the connection to what went wrong.

But I have to disagree about them being the most beautiful pairs -- that goes to Tai Babiloni and Randy Gardner, IMO!

I am a wee bit too young to have caught some of these skaters while they were performing, but speaking of making love on ice, does anyone remember the ice dancing couple of Marina Klimova and Sergei Ponomarenko, who were married in real life?  Talk about melting the ice with their 1992 Olympic free dance.  Phew!  *fans self*  I think it was because of that performance that the rules for ice dancing were made stricter.

Thanks to all for your kind comments about my boy Dickens.  I named him, strangely enough, after a cat on a TV show called "Tucker's Witch" -- it starred Tim Matheson and Catherine Hicks. She had a cat named Dickens who was her "familiar."  Loved that cat and loved the name.

Thus....

Sorry about Salty, Mike!  Siblings are strange about what they remember and what they don't.  My mother has a sister who remembers things differently, too....even when many of us who "were there at the time" insist on one version, she has convinced herself of other circumstances.

Probably, your sister hated that she killed Salty and her mind refuses to let her acknowledge it.

Ron I LOVE the new photo.  It makes me laugh.  Sweet Dickens.  Eight was too young.  Now I’m crying.  He was gorgeous at five.  I’m laughing again with the picture of Dickens and Vickie.

All this skating talk has made me feel bad I deleted my recordings.  I went back to TIVO figure skating wish list and told it to begin recording again.  I just hope I have time to watch and  catch up on the current crop of skaters I’m not too familiar with.  So which book should I read ZERO TOLLERANCE or the INSIDE EDGE?

I would like to read a biography of Deana Durbin since I believe her story had a happy ending.

Eight inches of snow in Portland and school was canceled again.

MBarnum I’m sure your sister doesn’t want to remember.  I couldn’t have been more than eight when neighbor’s cat had a litter of kittens.  I begged my parents for one but the answer was always no.  Fortunately the neighbors decided to keep my favorite kitten themselves which was almost as good as my taking it home.  I can still remember watching as the kitten was run over by a car.  I will not go into details.  I assure you the entire neighborhood heard my response to what I was watching.

Lulu --- Years and years ago, Joan Blondell wrote an autobiographical novel.  I think if she didn't call it a novel she would have been sued by June Allyson for the things Ms. Blondell said about her.  Since the names were changed and it was called "fiction" she couldn't sue.  I think the book was called CENTER DOOR FANCY.

You're right, Jane, driving around the Northwest is almost worse today than it was yesterday during the snow.  The temperatures have gotten above freezing so there is some melting going on, but not enough to clear off the roads.  One of my co-workers described it as trying to drive in a Slurpie.  Standing water that is stuck between piles of snow is causing cars to stall out.  It is a mess.

Loved the pictures of Dickens, DR Ron. Thanks for sharing them.

Everyone's pet pictures are really wonderful.

I don't go out of my way to watch the pairs or ice dancing. Not that they aren't athletic or beautiful, but I guess I just like the solo work much more. For those who DO like the pairs and dance, their short programs are on tonight on ESPN2 at (I think) 10 p.m. I'll be watching LAW & ORDER.

A word of caution about DINNER AT EIGHT. While it does contain some classic lines and some really good comedy, there are quite a few dramatic (melodramatic is more like it) segments to it, and it's not all fun and games. It's all very well put together (grand, unfussy direction by George Cukor), but there are some sad, pitiful moments.

The last scene between Jean Harlow and Marie Dressler is worth EVERY discomfort one might find in the melodrama.  It's one of THE MOST PRICELESS MOMENTS in the entire history of American cinema!

Hey! Somebody likes WICKED out there! Look at the first paragraphs from this article at Playbill:

"The Wicked cast recording — now available on the Decca Broadway label — had the highest first-week sales of any Broadway cast recording since Jonathan Larson's Rent in 1996. According to Nielsen SoundScan, the 19-track disc sold 17,841 units during its first week on the shelves. Comparatively, during their first weeks, blockbusters Hairspray sold 8,769 units, while The Producers fans bought 8,052 CDs."

Oh, I hope no one thought I was criticizing the film. I LOVE a mix of comedy and drama. I just wanted those who hadn't experienced it to be aware that despite the presences of Jean Harlow, Marie Dressler, and Billie Burke, it's not a slapstick or even sophisticated comedy romp.

DRJANE - if you are a Toller fan....his book....  If you just want to know what's behind ice skating's facade.... INSIDE EDGE...  Both have their plusses!

CENTER DOOR FANCY is kind of clumsily written and Joan REALLY hates June which is obvious....but didn't Joan leave Dick Powell to marry Mike Todd?  June mentions it in her book and denies part of the story Joan tells so she certainly gives credence to the "fiction."

I just posted about the Wicked sales figures elsewhere.  These articles are being put out by Decca's publicity department.  While there is nothing wrong with 17,000 copies for a first week, in the scheme of things it's meaningless.  I'm quite certain it was a very expensive album (my guess is over $400,000) and it will take quite a few units to break the album even.  Most cast albums never break even.  Given that Universal is doing the comparisons, I would take them with a grain of salt.  The Producers has done very well and I'm sure Hairspray has as well.  I'm certain Wicked, over the long haul, will do fine.  The Universal publicity blitz is tiresome - the cast albums that end up being winners just go about their business and sell consistently.  Decca doesn't need to pump this up - if people like the album it will sell - if the show continues to run and has a tour, it will sell.  Simple as pie.  I hate these kinds of press releases - it actually does more harm than good because it makes people think they're all just patting themselves on the back like total winners - people react in opposite ways to that.

I did SHENANDOAH back in 1982, and there were audible sobs every night, not just with the boy coming home, but with the deaths of James and Anne and with Jacob's surprise shooting. (I played Jacob, and the director had me do a LOOOOOONNNNNGGGGG death crawl towards my father after I was shot. He used to laugh saying I dragged my death out longer than Camille. Afterwards, I would stand and cry and cry during "The Only Home I Know" (which I had to help sing from behind a scrim but could never get through it without sobbing) and "Meditation II."

I know that Universal and Decca are promoting the WICKED CD like mad, but I must admit, I was really shocked the day I got my recording (which was it's release date.) When I picked up my copy at Tower records, they had stacks and stacks of WICKED as well as BOY FROM OZ, and when I returned to the very same Tower the next day, they only had heaps and heaps of BOY FROM OZ and two copies left of WICKED. That ain't too shabby for one day, I'd say, and since then they've only kept a few copies of it on the shelves...I don't know if that's from genuine sales or if they're just trying to make it look like it's selling well. Granted, this is the Tower at Lincoln Center, which is right next door to Julliard, so that might account for some of the sales, but it's still exciting to see cast albums flying off the shelves...no pun intended.

Huh?  Huh?  Is the real deal out there?

If it is, where do I have to look to see the real deal?

You want the real deal?  HERE (http://antwrp.gsfc.nasa.gov/apod/ap040107.html) is a link to today's Astronomy Picture of the Day, which has a genuine color image of the surface of Mars!  I love this website.  I have the ARCHIVE (http://antwrp.gsfc.nasa.gov/apod/archivepix.html) bookmarked, but here is the MAIN PAGE (http://antwrp.gsfc.nasa.gov/apod/lib/aptree.html) for the site.  I highly recommend it.

Dorothy Hamill -- won a Gold Medal and remains a stunning figure in professional skating.

Peggy Fleming -- won a gold medal and remains a stunning figure in professional skating.

Annette Poetsch -- Won a gold medal and disappeared.

Katarina Witt -- Won two gold medals (on sex appeal alone) and skates professionally with a huge fan base (minus me).

Kristi Yamaguchi -- Won a gold medal and remains an inspiration to young skaters everywhere.

Oksana Baiul -- won a gold medal and went downhill.  Has given "prima donnas" a bad name.  Recent appearances have been full of promise that she has finally awakened to reality.

Tara Lipinski -- won a gold medal, hurt her hip, and can't skate competitively any more.  All before she was 18.

Sarah Hughes -- won a gold medal, grew taller, added weight and has decided she has nothing more to prove, so she's out of skating, also at age 18.  Her best skate ever was her Olympic skate.  It's the ONLY time I've ever seen her skate that I didn't think her jumps were klunky.

Michelle Kwan -- takes a licking and keeps on ticking!  As gorgeous on ice now, if not more so, than she ever has been.  Has had a long, glorious amateur career and is idolized by millions despite winning only Silver and Bronze Olympic medals.

Sasha Cohen -- yawn.

I will never forget driving home from school on Friday afternoon the day Dorothy Hamill skated for that gold medal, and it was being broadcast live on the radio. I can't believe I made it home before I wrecked the car because with every jump, I was about to jump out of the car myself. That night, knowing she had won the gold medal, I watched her skate on TV with tears in my eyes. It was SUCH a beautiful performance, the last Olympic lady to win the gold medal without doing a triple jump, and she didn't need to.

I appreciated DR Ron's listing of female gold medalists and others, but he left off the magnificent 1972 Olympic Champion - Trixie Shuba. She looked like an ox, couldn't do the simplest double jumps without falling, and won only because she was an expert school figures skater who built such a commanding lead in the figures that no one could catch her in free skating.

She too disappeared after her Olympic and world championship wins, and no wonder. Who would want to pay to see a professional skater trace figures 8's in the ice? That's all she could do expertly.

I didn't mention Trixie Shuba 'cuz I don't know from Trixie Shuba.

I've heard Dick Button AND Scott Hamilton talk about her, especially regarding her beating out Janet Lynn when Lynn was clearly a superior skater.

It was the disparity in scoring school figures and Lynn's inability to do them well that led to changes in scoring in the early 70s.  I've never seen Janet Lynn skate a complete program, but I'm informed that she was a very musical, graceful performer with a good deal of athleticism besides.

I sometimes wish Kristi Yamaguchi had hung around to compete in 1994, although I understand perfectly why she felt she didn't have to.  I think she would have run circles around that year's competition.  I enjoyed watching her evolve professionally, and her retirement is part of the reason I sort of lost interest in skating..

Janet was a lyrical and expressive skater (though I never thought she was an especially high jumper which is why she stumbled in most of her major competitions even in free skating.) The short program basically was added to skating because of Janet Lynn and those like her who were better at the thing audiences wanted to see: free skating.

The skater who finished second all those years to Janet at Nationals and who consistently placed ahead of her at worlds was a favorite of mine - Julie Lynn Holmes.

Quick trivia question. The last world ladies champion who had to win the title doing both figures and free skating came from the US. Her name is ........(answer below)

Jill Trenery.

Alas, no Benicio tonight. We drove to the Egyptian to get early tickets for 21 GRAMS and discovered that the tickets which I was assured were not sold out, were indeed sold out. Hearing this, my daughter uttered something I won't print on a family website. We spent the next two hours bickering like Oscar and Felix while sweaty, sleezy men with bad haircuts tried to sell us tours.
Now I'm home and I could really end the day right now - but there are at least 8 more hours to go.
The good news is that I don't have to drive to Rancho Cucamonga tomorrow, after all.
The Cucamongian friends are driving to Studio City to visit us. A generous thing for them to do. And a relief to me.

Does anyone remember when 1994 Gold Medalist Alexei Urmanov won his first professional figure skating title?

He had a humongous red cape, an enormous hat and did a pathetic magic trick (he was supposed to be some magician or other -- interpreting a piece of classical music -- but he could only do one trick, and it failed).  He just swooped and flounced around on the ice.

The judges always messed themselves over him, but it was one of the most appallingly bad things I've ever seen.

I remember Carol Heiss, but she was before my viewing experience.  There was Tenley Albright and the Hayes brothers and Dick Button, too.

Here, I've found the VERY performance I was describing above:

Whew!  I only go away for about three hours, and another six pages of posts to catch up on!  Wow-- nah, that was yesterday's word... I think today's will be "flibbertygibbett" - which is a favorite word of Mr. Sondheim, it was how he decribed the character of Johanna in Sweeney Todd last summer during rehearsals.  And a fine word it is.

OH - I meant to mention this earlier - and maybe I did, but I don't think so...

While I was working on the charts earlier, I heard some "commotion" downstairs.  Some sort of delivery man was talking to my mom.  I just figured it was one of my mom's food service vendors from the nursing home making a visit - which they do regularly.  Well, she called me downstairs to move something...  Our old dining room table(!) since she had a new table and set of chairs delivered this afternoon!  It's quite the beautiful set!  Very dark brown lacquer finish with japanese details.  Of course, when I asked if my dad knew she was buying a new table, she said, "No."  Well.. when I got back from dropping off the music, my dad was home, and he didn't seem perturbed at all.  And the old table is now in the living room serving as a work table for my mom as she works on putting all the pics she took over the holidays into albums.  -And the table will most likely find it's way to my new apartment in a couple of weeks. :)

Here's a post to get me one step closer:

Questions for BK:  do you have the music for all of the shows that you've written in sheet-music-like arrangements or are they just lead sheets with chords?  In other words, how complete are they?

Also, do you have copies of EVERY recording that have ever been made of shows that you've written?  And do you only have the vinyl albums to the recordings that were originally only on vinyl albums or have you had any (many?) put onto CD?

Here's another post to get me one step closer to HHW God-dom (and my 450th post!):

Even though it's not Friday, In my CD player:  a CD that I made of the original cast album of BK's very own show that he wrote and starred in:  Together Again.  It's quite delightful!  I got the album on eBay last year sometime, but never made a CD until now.  As most of us know, BK has quite the skill for writing a melody.  After that will be the CD of the album of Ruggles of Red Gap that I mentioned last night.

 Good evening all,

I think the good vibes are working because this is the best I have felt since Friday.  I will be speaking with my doctor when I go on MLK day.  I’m sure there must be something she can prescribe for me when these attacks hit.

Thank you also for the condolences on my fish.  I’ve been very surprised by the number of kind hearted people at work that have stop by my desk in the past day to say how sorry they are that he’s gone.  Most want to know if/when I’m going to get another one.  I’m not ready for that yet but I will consider it.

I do have to tell you my favorite memory about him   He did not like men.  A lady could sit in my chair with no problem but if the computer repair guy came or a man stood next to me, he would puff all up and fly up and down the glass like he would attack the guy if he could get at him.  I don’t know if he was jealous or protecting me or if it was something else.  I’ll never for him.

We had a survey passed around today at work asking what other languages you speak besides English.   I offered to put “Foul” and some “Klingon” but was told that wasn’t what they were looking for.  Ah well.

Ron, I  really like the pictures of your kitty.

Well, I’m interested to see what Bruce’s surprise is. I love surprises if they are good ones.  I don’t like bad surprises.

I enjoyed reading all the skating posts.  I used to watch it all the time.  I often wondered what happened to ‘Bowman the showman”.  Now I know.

As far as bio’s go, I don’t know about one I would like to read.  I’ve read most of the ones that interest me.  I remember hunting for everything I could get my hands on about Errol Flynn.  I remember I was shocked to learn that he didn’t have a headstone on his grave for years.

I was equally sorry to learn of the loss of his son.  Pity that.  I would have liked to see what he looked like.

DR derBrucer - I MD'ed a production of Shenandoah a couple of years ago, and it always surprised me at how moving the show was.  And how tricky it was to make the show "moving" without being treacly and overly-sentimental - which is a trap it can easily fall into.  The whole second act is a sob-fest.  And during the second Meditation, the director brought the house lights up very slowly so that the audience ended up being directly addressed in a way.  Quite a powerful statement about war and death.

-And that score - at least the piano/vocal part - has some tricky parts in it.  I actually had to practice! ;)

However, my favorite memory of that production was casting our Gabriel.  We cast out of Chicago, and we were having problems finding an African-American boy who could act and sing.  Well, the morning session went by with no real candidates - the agents just didn't know who or what to submit.  Well, during the afternoon session, one young gentleman came in and knocked our socks off with his reading.  Unfortunately, he said he didn't really sing.  Well...  We just sat at the piano for a good half hour, and, lo and behold, the boy could sing!  And pretty loudly too!  I kind of walked him through some exercises, and just told him to keep trying, and he did.  His mother walked back in later, and she though someone else had gotten the part - she had heard the singing down the hall, but didn't realize it was her son who was doing the singing!  I was exhausted after that! The only way I could get him to sing "high" was if I sang high(!).  So, after belting out high C's and D's for about 30 minutes  (that "Freedom" song is high(!!!)), we gave him the job... And then we (not the young gentleman and his mother) all headed over to Cafe Baba-Reeba for some tapas and a couple of pitchers of sangria!  -And all on the producers tab too!!

*I actually used to keep in touch with him and his mother for a few years after that via e-mail.  He ended up getting a bunch of day-players parts on "Chicago Hope", "ER", "Morning Edition", etc.  Unfortunately, I can't even think of his name right now... Mmm... I may have to look up that program when I get back to Richmond tomorrow.

DR SWW - Thanks for the "Good Eats" reminder.  I like Alton Brown, and I love his show.  So quirky, funny, and still manages to be very informative - and some of the less-traditional takes on traditional recipes are quite good.  -His chocolate "lava" cake recipe is a favorite of mine.

I don't have any of the tapes or DVD of his programs - just seems weird to pay that much for something that I can see at 9:00pm and 1:00am every Wednesday - as well as various times during the week.  However, I would like to see the Q&A sections.  -And do they have bloopers?  *If they were a little cheaper I'd buy them, but $19.95(?) does seem a bit much for a half-hour program.  Or are they longer on the DVDs?  -I think you said you owned a set...

I actually stood next to him in a very slow-moving line at La Guardia in September - as we were all waiting to fly out of NYC before hurricane Isabel shut the airport down.  We got out.  I'm not sure he did.

-He was actually less "sexy" in person than on TV, imho.  Still very quirky/preppy/smart, but something just wasn't "right".  I think it had to do with the fact that he was wearing a very nice suit, and had a few days of stubble on his face.  I'll take the stubble, but the suit just seemed out of the ordinary - at least compared to his usual attire on his TV show.

Oh, and do you have his new book on kitchen equipment?  I think I've mentioned it before sometime ago.  In any case, I was very proud of myself when I went through it, and found that I had most of his recommended pieces of kitchen wares - as well as his recommended brands and models.

Of course, my favorite "chunk" - chef+hunk - is still Tyler Florence.  I keep trying to think of a Food 911 emergency of my very own.  I used to like Rocco diSpirito, but now he's just a slickie-boy to me.

OK - I'm gonna take a computer break for a while.. all the work on the charts today as well as reading and posting here... I need to give my wrists and fingers some down time...

Oh, and do you think eating a whole bag of Brach's Bridge Mix would make one feel logey? ;)

Be back later...

Oh, DR WEL, as far as biographies go, I'd like to come across one of Emil Gilels, one of the late, great Russian pianists.  I have many of his recordings, and my teacher used to speak of his amazing live concerts.  I've just always been intrigued by the fact that his fingers used to bleed sometimes while playing the piano - at least that's what I've heard.

I'd also like to see some sort of official compendium of all the talented musicians and composers who would -and still do - ghost-write for the biggies.  The whole process and "mystery" intrigues me.  Of course, just from the nature of the inquiry, such a tome would probably never appear.  I have some composer friends in Hollywood now who have done quite a bit of composing... unfortunately, when the royalty checks come in, they don't get any of them.  But they were paid quite handsomely up front.

And has there been a book on Vera Allen?

Danise,  I am also a big Flynn fan.  I do believe there is now something at least marking his grave.  At least it was there the last time I visited his grave in Forest Lawn years ago.  Seems to me it was just a flat stone with name and dates on it.

I'm here... I'm here... I'm here!!!

Work this morning was pure unadulterated HEEEEEEEELLLLLLLLLL!!! (the link will explain why)

http://www.globeandmail.com/servlet/story/RTGAM.20040107.wgun0107a/BNStory/National/

Let's just say I spent the entire morning trying desperately to put together a press release in English while my boss worked on the French equivalent all while fielding phone call after phone call after phone call from reporters asking for interviews.

The big kahuna in Toronto (aka Madame E-mail) was on four different tv interview shows today.  That's a lot!!! :)

On top of five hours of wrangling with real work (I managed to escape to go to school - unlike my fellow coworkers who phoned me at home as recently as twenty minutes ago asking for the whereabouts of some contact info) I then got to spend an afternoon listening to Baltimore accents of different classes (Sociolinguistics) and the story of Moses and the Exodus (Death and Dying).

I am now exhausted and am seriously considering just saying to heck with my pride and going to bed at 9pm.

In other news, I had the Western European Politics class with the supposed chile pepper worthy prof (according to ratemyprofessor.com at least!)  He definitely was better looking than... oh I don't know... the 80 year old man who taught my course on the Arab Israeli Conflict... but overall was quite average. But something was bothering me him that I couldn't quite put my finger on.  Then I realised it.  The chile-pepper prof looks like a Christopher Fitzgerald clone.  It's ridiculous really.  Boq is teaching me Western European Politics.  ;)

DR Ben: Congrats on your God-dom... you win this round :D

DR Jennifer: I was very bad today and had a hot dog at the hotdoggerie across the street from my office instead of my 6''-veggie-no cheese-honey and oat bread-all dressed except for olives-honey mustard sauce concoction from Subway.  The wraps look a little gross to me (I'm not a huge bacon fan).  Oh well... Subway had to go the way of the Atkins eventually I guess - everyone else has! ;)

Re: the Good Eats DVDs, they each contain three 30 minute episodes, with a Q&A for each.  They're a little cheaper if you get them in "volumes," with three discs per disc (nine eps total).  Also, he says (somewhere) that his normal attire is jeans and t-shirt; the bowling and Hawaiian shirts are show wear.  (And, for the "volume three" discs, he's sporting a goatee!  He's almost woofy!)

Gotta go, shows on!

The problem with Alton Brown's Gear for the Kitchen is that, if you've already stocked the most important room in the house (well, after the one with the shower and porcelin) and what you've stocked it with isn't what he would have stocked it with, well, you really just have to cash in some of your stock to buy what he would have stocked it with.  This can get expensive!  Just ask der Brucer!  Also, the book would have been more fun if it had included a few pics of Vicki Eng (a.k.a. "W" on the show), but there were probably contract problems.

Oh, if you haven't already discovered it, try giving The Good Eats Fan Page (http://www.goodeatsfanpage.com/) a look.  Go ahead, I'll be patient.

Ah, you're back!  Now, as for Tyler Florence, he's kinda easy on the eyes, but not my type.  Come to think of it, most TV chefs aren't.  But then, I'm not supposed to be watching for that reason.  (Similarly, der Brucer keeps turning on Fox News, but since their big star is O'Reilly, I know der B is behaving himself!)

Charles, Glad to learn that I am not the only Flynn Fan.  When I was a little girl and didn't know he had died about the time I was born, I very much wanted to grow up and marry him.  It broke my heart when I learned of his death.

His book, "My Wicked, Wicked Ways" was an eye opener for me.  I think I was eleven when I read it.  My parents never really put any restrictions on my reading.

I'm so proud of myself!  I got the books to download and then figured out how to up load them to my PDA and if that was not enough, I got Adobie Reader Pocket Editon to load to the PDA as well!  I am a computer genius!  Look out , Mark! Today I conquered the PDA, tomorrow the internet!

Whew!  I am tired now after all that and will be hitting the sack when I post this.  I will start reading Benjamin Kritzer on the way to work tomorrow!

Goodnight all!

I would like to come to the defense of Toller Cranston. I have had the opportunity in the past to come to meet him on several occassions. My family has had an art gallery in Montreal for the past 30 years and we at one time represented him as one of artists. I always liked his work and we own a painting of his. His use of colors and imagery made his work stand out among the other artists that we represented.

They always said that Cranston as a skater never received the recognition he deserved and he was an skater a head of his time. He broke away from the more staid and traditional moves and allowed the current crop of artists to shine.

Cranston has an artist's personality. He is bigger than life and conducted his life that way. I am sure not everyone who met him liked him, but I did. I was also friendly with his friend the late skater Brian Pockar.

Toller even autographed the cast album of the Toller Cranston Ice Show for me.

DR SWW - Thanks for the info on the "Good Eats" DVDs... hmm.. Three episodes per tape/DVD... I may have to investigate further.

-As for tonight's episode... An herb show?  In January?  I guess for those planning a spring - or even winter - herb garden.  And his "herb dryer" rigging was "fun" for a lack of a better word.  I just have to wonder how safe the air filters are - at least once they come in contact with foodstuffs.  Well, at least I know now who to sue.  ;)

DR Emily - I read the article - I guess you were busy today!  And I also learned that you call them ABMs and not ATMs as they called south of your border.

Hmm.. A - B - M....

Good evening everyone!
I shall soon be winging my way back to the land of sleet and snow, and here's hoping the freshluganah airport is open when I get there.
Today I went snorkeling..well, kinda, since I didn't have a mask, only goggles...in one of the coral reef bays.  It was AMAZING!!!  I'd never seen tropical fish up close before, and never so many at one time.  They were SO beautiful, and seeing them in their natural habitat, being right in the water with them, made it ever cooler. Definitely one of the highlights of the trip.  A side note, I think one of the fish developed a crush on me.  He (or she) followed me around the reef for a good fifteen minutes.  When I stopped, he circled me.  When I swam, he was right by my feet.  Strange, no?  I swear this is the truth...Tiana will back me up, she saw! :)

I don't remember anyone saying anything negative about Toller Cranston, so defending him seems unnecessary.  Everything I've read, thus far, has been highly complimentary.

I'm watching ice dancing -- original dance.  It's kinda sorta b-o-r-i-n-g!  Everyone is doing rock 'n' roll, which makes me think they've been told what kind of music to be "original" with.  As it is, they all seem copycat and there's just so much of it you can stand.

Belbin and Tcherneshev (sp???) had to withdraw, which means they won't have a shot at a 6th Consecutive U.S. ice dancing title!!!!!  I HAD NO IDEA THEY HAD ONE TITLE!  But I do seem to remember they couldn't compete at Olympics once because he hadn't been an U.S. citizen long enough...it may have been another multi-cultural U.S. couple, though.

Ah, well.

I liked Carol Heiss, but she went into coaching and didn't seem to do professional ice shows for decades like Peggy Fleming did. Other than her SNOW WHITE movie, I think she kind of faded from view for the masses. I guess she had a family and being a mom was her specialty for awhile and then went into coaching.

DR Michael Shayne, I was greatly pulling for Brian Pockar the year he won the bronze at Worlds. He had lost the Canadian Championship to Brian Orser but bested him at Worlds. I was so happy about that. Orser, of course, twice won the Worlds and won two silvers in the 84 and 88 Olympics.

A book about Ann Miller, but not by Ann Miller would be quite interesting.  Her autobiography Miller's High Life makes Belle Poitrine's Little Me seem serious and true by comparison.  At least once a chapter Ms. Miller reminds readers that she looked older than her age as a child and so added years to make her actually seem older and now she is actually much younger than published reports because of this.  This is an excellent book for people who like to read between the lines.

Before my TV shows came on tonight, I had the strangest desire to watch the movie MAME. Oh, does Lucy ever butcher those songs. She's barely on pitch while singing, but there's no character to her voice, no emotion - it's just struggling to hit the notes, and you hear it in every song. What a disaster she is. And there she sat front and center at the Golden Globes fully expecting to win that year, and when Raquel Welch's name was called (for THE THREE MUSKETEERS), you knew she wanted to drop to the floor.

Funny, too, that Audrey Christie, who plays Mrs. Upson in the film, played Vera when I first saw MAME with Janis Paige in NYC.

Back to Raquel Welch again for me if we're going to talk roller derby. KANSAS CITY BOMBER is the extent of my knowledge about roller derby. Oh, it used to come on Saturday early evening in our area, but I only watched when the men were skating, and even then only half heartedly. They wore too many clothes. CHampionship Wrestling - now there you could see a lot more!

I want to apologize if I've poured on the skating talk too much here today. I guess I DO get carried away when the subject comes up, and I get so little chance to talk about it ever. None of my friends in town are the LEAST bit interested in it, and it was exciting to find some like-minded fans here.

Now that I'm headed for bed, others can come out of hiding and have no fear that more skate talk is going to descend upon their heads, at least from me.

[DR Ron may be lurking some place, however.]

Good night.

Oh, piffle, Jay!

Nobody is making folks talk about ice skating.  We talk about it because we want to.  You can talk about whatever you want to talk about, too.  I do it all the time.

 :D

That said, I was very disappointed in the judging in pairs.  The first place pair ought to be third, the second place oaur ought to be fourth, the third place pair ought to be first and the fourth place pair ought to be second.

But maybe that's why I stopped watching pairs and ice dancing....all the judges don't judge on "performance" -- it's all about what the team "should" be capable of doing.  So if the so-called "top pair" skates poorly, they're going to be placed first no matter what.  If a pair that finished fifth last year skates its heart out and doesn't make mistakes like falling on triple throws or side-by-side triple jumps, they're still going to be fourth or fifth even though the "favored" pair falls and fails -- AGAIN -- to live up to "potential."

Judging is still terrible!

Now!  Talk away everyone about whatever.  I talk about what I want to.  I don't wait for others to post something interesting that I can contribute to.  If something doesn't interest me, I post what's on my mind.

Y'all all know that, though, dontcha!!!

 ;D

DR MattH:  You'd better be talking about this competition tomorrow 'cause I'm gonna quiz you on it.

Mens and women's short programs air on ESPN2 tomorrow night -- 7 p.m. PST/10 p.m. EST!!!

Just got back from spending a full 8 hours with college friends...it was fun, but I'm glad to be home.  I love the girls, but they can really wear me out sometimes.

If I was as attractive as you, dear Maya, I would have a house full of mirrors, instead of just a bedroom full.  As it is, I cover the bathroom mirror, for fear I might accidently see myself naked.

LOL...aw, TCB, you exaggerate on both counts!

Swish--love the pic!

Jason--love the new avatar!  I can't wait to see Assassins!

It's wonderful the Wicked OCR is doing so well...I actually burned a copy for my best friend who is NOT into musical theatre much, and she loved it.  I think it's just a very accessible score, which is not to diss it at all.

Well, I just finished my preliminary packing for my trip back down to Richmond tomorrow.  I'm soooo excited to be heading back home for a few days... And then to New York a week from today!

I was kind of surprised that there wasn't more to pack.  I tend to keep bringing more stuff up from Richmond each time I go back and forth, but this time there seems to be less accumulation.  The car will be nicely packed, but I should still be able to use my rear-view mirror with no "interference".

It's amazing what one finds when going through about three months of stuff: lots of back issues of magazines, old newspapers (into the recycling bin), a pound of fudge(!), some clothes I forgot I had bought (gotta love those Banana Republic clearance racks!), lots of shopping bags from lots of shopping trips... and it does look like my Imelda gene did kick in over the past few months: I have ten pairs of shoes here!  And I think I bought about five or six of those pairs while I was up here!  But one can never have too many black New Balance walking shoes - great for the pit!

All I have left to do is put away the stuff that's in the "open" - I also bought a bunch of candles over the past few weeks - ???.  I also want to get my hair cut tomorrow morning at my favorite barber shop up here.  So, hopefully, I should be heading back down to Richmond by 1:00, and be back home by 3:00!  *Oh, and as luck would have it, my masseuse will be in town this weekend, and I have a nice two slot booked for Sunday!

A two hour massage followed by "Sex & The City" - sounds like a nice Sunday night to me!

DR Panni - I tend to get those late night organizing joneses every now and then... and sometimes they turn into a organizing and cleaning jones! -Most definitely not a Smith or a Harpers, but a Jones.  Of course, when I go through my CDs, there's always one or two missing CDs, and I end up being kept up by all the, "I wonder where it is?" thoughts.

I think the "worst" case was when I started taking care of some tough spots on the kitchen floor.. About an hour later, I had done the whole floor... by hand... on my hands and knees... with just a heavy duty wash cloth and a bucket of sudsy water.  But, Man was that floor C-L-E-A-N!

Right now, I'm watching a show on The Discovery Channel called "Tokyo's Sky City."  The description, according to tvguide.com, is:  Examining plans for a building that would be a mile high and incorporate 24 steel, concrete and glass "plateaus," each 40 stories high and stacked on top of each other.  They're inventing techniques to build the building.  There's another building being built right now called Taiwan 101 (it'll have 101 floors).  Taiwan 101 is kind of a test building for the techniques that will be used for Sky City.  It's going to be on again tonight at 1:00 am (actually Thursday morning).  I'm going to tape it to see the whole thing!

And with this post, I'm tied with MBarnum at 452 posts each (and he's off-line, too)!  One more and I'll be 12th highest poster (he said with a maniacal laugh)!!

Of course, you really don't have to cough to say that Emily Skinner's u/s is going on... -Now that's mean!  -And I've played for Emily!

-Oh, and you could always delve into the opera world... Teresa Stratas, Aprille Millo (I still remember that one performance here in DC where she literally walked off the stage in the middle of the opera... She just felt she wasn't singing well that night.  They had to call her cover in!)

I don't know why, but I was playing a game of Free Cell and singing An English Teacher in my Katherine Hepburn voice.  Everyone should try it - it works really well, especially the lines "I could have been Mrs. Peterson, Mrs. Albert Peterson, Mrs. Phi Beta Kappa Peterson, the English teacher's wife."

Try it right now and tell me what you think.

It was the disparity in scoring school figures and Lynn's inability to do them well that led to changes in scoring in the early 70s.  I've never seen Janet Lynn skate a complete program, but I'm informed that she was a very musical, graceful performer with a good deal of athleticism besides.

And, of course, she will always be remembered as the mother of Loretta Lynn.

Okay, Bruce, here are a few last minute questions that have nothing to do with what's been talked about at all:  What was the very first song that you wrote.  What was it about?  Was it part of a show or just a song on its own?

There.  You can answer each question separately and (legitimately) add to your total!

I also got the DVD, "Muppets Magic from The Ed Sullivan Show."  It "features the first Muppet performance on The Ed Sullivan Show from September 18, 1966."  And it includes "Rare Bonus Futtage!"  I love the Muppets!

Hello all!  I've been unexpectedly out of town since last evening.  Got a call from my best friend from college telling me that she was in Ellensburg (my hometown and where our university is) for a couple days on her way back to Reno (grad school).  So I bombed down there and had a lovely and sparkling time hanging out with her and other college friends.

I'm currently setting stuff up on my new computer, which I recieved this evening.  No more fershluganah Mac!!! :D

And now I have a veritable plethora of posts from the last 30 hours to catch up on!

What is everyone's favorite Beatles song? I generally prefer their earlier recordings. One of my favorites is "In My Life." Hmm I know there are so many more I absolutely adore. Perhaps I will be reminded by something else someone posts.

Danise, there are pictures around of Sean Flynn before he was lost. He was very, very handsome.

Actually, Danise and Matt, Sean Flynn actually made, at least, one movie that I know of, for sure.  It was like a remake of Thief of Baghdad.  I was crushed when he died.

I've never really been a Beatles fan.  I do like a lot of their songs, though, but when I was in high school, we had to sing "Michele" (is that how it's spelled?) in Show Choir and I've hated that song ever since.

There was another Beatles song that I can't stand as well, but I've blocked out the title.  I can't remember it but...unfortunately...will probably wake up in the middle of the night singing it.  I hate it when that happens.
