Last night, I went to see "Star Trek" in IMAX. In one word: GREAT! ;D
I won't say anything else because it would all be spoilers (not that there's too much to spoil, though). But I really, really liked it.

Thanks for the theatre reportage, bk!!! :)

Yes, Dear Readers, I stopped by the Brooklyn Diner last night on my way to see Next to Normal. I saw our loverly Bruce and met Adam Cates. I also found out who some (one at least) of the guests will be this evening. Very exciting!
Next to Normal is still quite excellent on a second viewing. As Bruce said, unless something untoward happens, some time on June 7th Miss Alice Ripley will have a Tony award in her possession. I think her strongest competition is Josefina Scaglione, Maria from West Side Story, but she's not strong enough to take the award away from Ripley. I love Sutton Foster in Shrek but no, I hope to see 9-5 this coming week but Alison Janney, no and though I do love Miss Stockard Channing I'm not sure why she was nominated. She's the dark horse in all this.
Oh, my that turned into a treatise on Tonys not Next to Normal. I honestly don't know what is new because it's been a while since I saw the show Off-Broadway but the new production is stronger and has some unexpected humor. It's in the Booth Theatre, my favorite theatre on Broadway. I had a great TDF seat, 3rd row on the aisle. I could see them sweat (and they did). Since I know the twist the "shock" I felt the first time wasn't as strong but it's still a heart stopping moment, especially for those who don't know. I do think Aaron Tveit should have been nominated. He's wonderful, but worse things have happened at the Tonys (like nominating Rock of Ages for ANYTHING!).
Oh, well. I need to get up and out to the office.
Later, gaters.
-
Oh, yes, we won't be watching anything tonight because we will be at Fred and Skip's. Hooray.
-
BK,
Please send some of that NY rain down here to Austin.
Although we had 2-3 good downpours a couple of weeks ago, we're still in a drought.
-
On view this week:
THE WRESTLER

and a film with Anne Hathaway, PASSENGERS.
Anybody know anything about that one?

-
Looking forward to the Brooklyn Diner video...and the FJL/SKIP report tomorrow!

Ben,
When you say on the aisle, does that mean seat 2 or seat 1, or were you in the actual center?

Break a leg to TCB!!!
-
Good morning, all! I'm in the bit of a mess at the moment because
the idiotic Planetarium Station of the US Postal service has lost 3 days of my mail because some moronic postal worker did not get my request to have the mail held to the postal workers handling my route!
I just got off the phone with the supervisor who has promised to look into the matter but no one seems to know if my mail was maladroitly delivered, picked up at my door by one of my neighbors, handed to my super, or tossed into the garbage, but I am very very very pissed at the moment. I have to be out of here in another 40 minutes to get to 54th and Park Avenue to begin the McGlinnventory so all I can do for the nonce is wait for a return call from the post office to explain their major screwup and hope before I go out that I encounter either a neighbor or the super.
Heads will role because I have the hold request, the postal route supervisor has their print out from May 2 and some ass couldn't get it to the carrier before now, only 5 days later.
-
Ben,
When you say on the aisle, does that mean seat 2 or seat 1, or were you in the actual center?
I was C-2 which is the Right Aisle seat. I was surprised that I got such a good seat from TDF. I actually thought I would have been in the mezz which would not have been bad at all because of the set (it's three levels) but 3rd row on the aisle is not bad either.
-
Vibes were telling me not to go to DC although I had, for the most part, a good time. The first day of the symposium wasn't as good as I'd thought, primarily because the author of the book had too many musical examples to be played (the sounds wasn't great and often the cues were wrong) and not enough of the panelists. There were some wonderful moments and the second day, in which the panelists ran with the symposium and took questions from the audience, went much better.
Then, just as the symposium ended, my friend Aaron Gandy, who's on the LIFE BEGINS AT 8:40 project with me, asked the person at the Library sponsoring the project about what was going on with it and she went ballistic, threw a rather drama queen-y tantrum blaming everyone - mostly me and the copyists - but herself for the problems on the project. A great way to end the day.
As to the Hotel Rouge, beautiful hotel, and too far away from the Library and, when you're in a hurry, the Metro.
The good things were hanging out with the panelists, meeting and dining with two friends from the Cast Recording List, and seeing friends I had not seen in years.
I am not at all caught up on posts but I will be by Sunday. I gather our DR TCB opens GUYS AND DOLLS tonight?Break a leg, DR TCB! Kisses on your opening!

The sky was beautifully clear when I drove into Philly this morning but now the clouds have moved in so I guess we will have another rainy day like they predicted.
*sigh*...

It looks beautiful today. I don't know how long it will last but in Chelsea (where BK is at the moment), it's loverly!

Reading the notes BK said he has to bite his tongue re: rude theatre goers. I'm curious if others here do the same or if they say something.
I'm the type of person who is really bothered by rude behavior. ANd i know if i don't say something that their behavior will just grate on me throughout the show (assuming they don't stop). So i usually try "the stare". And if that doesn't work (and they keep up the behavior) i usually try to nicely point out the problem. I mean mostly people probably don't know what they are doing, right? ;)
-
I am SO frustrated with the friggin' Oregonian. They have been so inconsistent in getting Rave in the Nave performance announcements in the paper. I sent them a complete EPK on Daniel Stein, one of the most prominent modern theater people (albeit in a niche genre--corporeal mime). The guy is a Guggenheim Fellow, has NEA grants up the ying-yang, teaches at Juilliard, is here for one night only doing an internationally acclaimed show, and the Oregonian gives him a tiny calendar announcement, while they spend pages of newsprint on people who are here all year round (not that that's a bad thing, but still....). And they wonder why people are cancelling their subscriptions in droves.
The good news is the Jewish Review did a full page write up, and one of the neighborhood papers, The Beaverton Valley Times, also did a great feature on Daniel. But, boy, am I steaming mad at the Oregonian this morning. I'd like you all to cancel your subscriptions. :)
-
Good morning!
We never got rain yesterday, but it's in the forecast for today, too, and it's gray outside so it looks like we might indeed get the rain. We'll see.

Right now, my work plans for the day are to take this afternoon off to watch some TV and one of those STAR TREK Blu-rays, and then tonight watch the next Criterion in a box set of movies that will take some time.
All of this could change, of course, if BIG or some other Fox Blu-ray that's past due date happens to land on my front or side porch.
-
Yes, indeed. Best broken leg wishes go to DR TCB on his opening night!
-
On TV TOnight!™
CBS - GHOST WHISPERER, FLASHPOINT, NUMB3RS
NBC - HOWIE DO IT, DATELINE
ABC - HAPPY FEET, 20/20
FOX - PRISON BREAK, DOLLHOUSE
CW - EVERYBODY HATES CHRIS, THE GAME
-
Last night, I went to see "Star Trek" in IMAX. In one word: GREAT! ;D
:D We plan to go next week.
-
Since I take Friday off from my workout, I spent the morning catching up on three TV shows. I began with last night's THE FASHION SHOW.
Couldn't be more of a PROJECT RUNWAY clone unless they brought in Tim Gunn and Heidi Klum lookalikes to host.
I enjoyed the clothes (those pencil dresses were the ugliest things I've ever seen). Had no problem with the winner or the loser though I think I would have thrown out the second-to-lowest designer instead of who was eliminated.
The first black dress challenge was lots of fun and I loved some of those designs.

Next I watched last night's season finale of KROD MANDOON. Some pretty good laughs, particularly when the gang was transformed into dogs. I hot a couple of big laughs from that.
-
TOD: I'm watching a few episodes of "Mary" -- Mary Tyler Moore's variety show from 1978. The pilot was wonderful-- clever skits, new musical numbers that showed off everyone's singing and dancing and Mary Tyler Moore did a great job. Naturally after picking up the pilot, CBS decided that the entire thing needed to be changed and to be more, "with it." so they cut most musical numbers and brought in a good support cast (Swoosie Kurtz, Judy Kahan, Dick Shawn, Michael Hampton, David Letterman, and Michael Keaton. The trouble is they brought in too many people and there wasn't enough tiome to give them enough to do, and there wasn't enough for Mary to do either. What a huge waste of talents.
-

We watched THE WRESTLER last night. I do not like wrestling making the movie difficult to watch at times.

And then I watched THE OFFICE from last WEEK. Can't believe it took me a week to get it watched. Anyway, I laughed at the "casual Friday" apparel, but the mean-spirited salespeople war was squirm-inducing, not funny to me at all.

Hello, everyone.
I am sick. At first I thought it was chicken pox, as DF&H#2 has had shingles, which is some biological cousin or something to chicken pox, which i have not had. Then someone suggested it might be swine flu. Oy! I talked to my doctor, though, and she said it's most likely just the ordinary flu, which is also going around. I'll spare you the details--you all know what it's like.
I send my best to TCB and all other DRs.

DR Jeanne I'm sorry you have the flu, and very, very happy you do not have shingles or chicken pox.
I've been reading, & need to look into this more, that at 60 one should have a chicken pox vaccination (to avoid getting shingles) even if you had it has a child. It seems to me than one should simply have a shingles vaccination. As I said, I need to look into this more.

Question for bk (or anyone you can give me the answer/definition):
What is defined as a treatment? Is it a completed script, a draft, an outline, a what?

A "treatment" is a short outline (or a long outline) of the story that will end up being a full-length screenplay.
-

DR MBarnum the tullips & lamp go well together. Congrats on your latest find.

Time to give Deuce his morning walk, make my smoothie and be off to the theatre --
(a few last minute things to check on prop and costume wise -- last night was the first run through with full costumes and full props and it was really throwing me off so I need to walk through some of my scenes on the stage with an empty house -- some quick costume changes and a butt-load of props that I take off and on stage constantly -- one of those roles that's a "pat your head, rub your belly and be able to chew gum all at the same time" type part -- gotta be able to work those props, have those lines and character down, project, and disguise my dang Texas accent since Ester ain't from Texas! A lot to remember for this little old noggin -- good golly, how I do go on -- TMI! ).

Thanks, bk. What's its purpose -- how is it used in the industry? I've heard people refer to a "treatment" so I was just wondering what that meant. Do the writers submit those instead of a script first or what? How does that work?

Good Morning!
Good Afternoon!
Good Evening!
Good Whatever!
Greetings from Manila!
-
It is currently 2:35AM here in the Philippines. I'm just not sure if it's "today", "yesterday" or "tomorrow".
...And as soon as my parents met me at the airport, my Dad informed me that we are flying to his hometown, Bicol, in the morning. Well, more like later in the morning/today at 6:40AM.
Sleep? What's sleep?
-
Long story, short:
Good flight from JFK to DTW.
Good fight from DTW to NGO - all 13 hours of it.
We ended up sitting in the plane for almost an hour after we landed in Nagoya in order for the local health officials to come aboard the plane, collect the health questionnaires we had to fill out, and then use a thermogenic(?) camera to scan everyone on the plane to see who might be running a fever. -And, yes, some people did "light up" in the camera, so... The next leg of my flight ended up leaving about hour later than schedule.
Good flight from NGO to MNL. -Although, I do wish I had heard less chatter from the American man sitting behind me who was going to Manila to meet his mail-order - well, internet-order - bride. Hmm... But at least he did give the name of the website he used to everyone around him. ::)
It took me about another hour after landing to go through immigration, baggage claim (of course, mine was one of the last bags off the plane), and customs. I, thankfully, read the signs that indicated where to meet "family and loved ones" - "A-L" to the left, "M-Z" to the right. I saw my mom as soon as I came down the ramp... Whew!
-
I was greeted at the airport by my parents, along with my Mom's brother and sister. -Who's name I'm still not sure of. :-\ My aunt ended up renting a rather nice condo for us for our stay, and when we got there, I was greeted by a myriad of cousins and other uncles and aunts - and I think most of them were "real" aunts, uncles and cousins this time, and not just close family friends. Lots of hugs and kisses, and some gift exchanging, and, of course, some food - nothing like a post-midnight meal of chicken and rice, fried tofu and pork and puto (steamed rice flour cakes).
-
Of course, I should be sleeping right now - and I should be tired since I don't think I got that much sleep on the plane, but... I have a feeling I'll be OK since the time difference is so "drastic" that it's just a matter of accepting it, rather than fighting it. ;)
*And it was nice to see that the electrical outlets here use "U.S." plugs, and that there seems to be an open WiFi signal to. :)

Oh, --the chest of drawers...yes, that is a nice piece of furniture...
Oh... well, I think there is a pic of that chest floating around somewhere... ;)
-
LOVE that lamp, Mikey -- and the tulips. Is most of your decor retro?
My whole home is retro!
And when DR MBarnum say his "whole" home, he means it.
;)
*Even I'm not sure what that means, if anything.
-
bk - Spamalot was at The Shubert.
-
DR elmore - Welcome back to New York City! -And I really hope your mail situation is fixed, and soon.
-
bk - Yes... If there's even a hint of precipitation in the forecast, I always leave my apartment with an umbrella. It keeps the rain away.
-
Freshly picked tulips from my yard.
The tulips are nice but even nicer is the Radio and the man in the picture!
Thanks Ben. The radio was courtesy of a yard sale on the other block. The man in the picture is my dad in his Navy uniform circa 1945.
Dad had a very nice body.
That's what I was thinking...
Umm...me, too. ;)
-
bk - And, yes, that ASCAP room is not-so-singer-friendly... or musician-friendly, in general. I hope you get/got a good room at Ripley-Grier.
-
Hello, everyone.

Thanks all for the vibes and prayers for DN David. This is jhvw's latest update
David's out of surgery and in recovery, we'll be able to see him in an hour. He'll still be out in ICU. He got the valve type he wanted and the surgeon said everything went great! We are all breathing a very deep sigh of relief!
Continued vibes for DN David.

BREAK A LEG, DR TCB!!!!!
Thanks, Jose. I don't think I have ever been wished BREAK A LEG from the Philippines before. I hope you have a wonderful time on your trip.
-
Thanks TCB
-
DR JoseSPiano - glad that you arrived safely. Can't wait to hear all about your many upcoming adventures!! :D Hope you get some sleep at some point, too.
-
Wow. What a surprise. The Game Warden just called and is on his way over.
-
We did get some rain earlier this afternoon, but it seems to hav passed on by now, and it's getting much warmer.
-
I had such an enjoyable afternoon of viewing. I began with Wednesday night's CSI: NY. Lindsey finally had her baby. As for the case, it was just OK.
-
Then I watched an NCIS episode from the season 5 box. (I thought I had season 2 in the player, but I didn't, so I went ahead and watched what was already cued up.)
Good episode about a Marine being given steroids to become a superman soldier. Very intriguing episode.
-
Then I watched STAR TREK II: THE WRATH OF KHAN. The best of the STAR TREK films with the original cast, the Blu-ray looked mostly superb with excellent picture clarity and a Dolby TrueHD surround mix that made the movie often sound like a modern day action film. Really good.
And I must say that Ricardo Montalban had pecs of death! ;D
-
I ended my afternoon watching today's AS THE WORLD TURNS. The boys were on, and the plot with Damien continues to intrigue. Is he really this noble guy now or is it all a part of a bigger, badder plan? I have to say I'm very interested in where this is going.

DR Kerry - Do the MARY episodes include the famed "Driftwood" number?
-
The Criterion disc I'll be watching tonight is a film I've never seen before with one of the strangest names I've ever heard: PIGS AND BATTLESHIPS.
Should be an interesting film. It's only 108 minutes and there are a couple of bonus features with it, too. That should leave plenty of time to watch something on the DVR before I play back tonight's GHOST WHISPERER around 10.
-
Guess I'll do a couple of computer maintenance chores and then head on down for more viewing.
WBBL.
-
Wow. What a surprise. The Game Warden just called and is on his way over.
Yeah, but did you request him to come over?
-
PIGS AND BATTLESHIPS.
:)
-
Back from a mostly very good rehearsal at Ripley-Grier - had a very nice room. I then took a walk to Academy Records and bought four CDs. I'm back in the hotel now, and will probably head over to Times Square in about thirty minutes - I think I'll try for a matinee tomorrow.

Shattered femurs for TCB. What?
-
Oy! Such a day. The mess from the McGlinnventory will continue for several months, I do believe. By 2:30 my eyes were blurring, my throat and nose were closing off from the dust, I had a headache, and I thought it was time to come home. The post office did indeed screw up my request to hold the mail but my neighbor had all of my mail the carrier had dumped at my door. I'm glad I had asked him to keep an eye on any packages that got left at my door.
I can't blame the post office for this one but I've been waiting for two package from eBay wins from over a month now and I am not amused by this situation.
I'm quite draggy; I didn't get to bed before 1:30 this morning, and I was up at 7 am. I suspect I'll be asleep by 7:30 or 8.
I just ordered TOM JONES. Yay!
-
DR elmore I have been thinking all day of your mail situation and am very happy to learn your neighbor kept it for you.

JMK - I refuse to have the Oregonian in my house!
Happy now?
-
Break a leg, TCB!
-
I am SO frustrated with the friggin' Oregonian.
How about if we all call the Oregonian and say that we WERE going to subscribe, but we won't because of this controversy??
;D
-
The Game Warden has come and gone. He found no sign of crawdads or turtles or bullfrogs.
This is good-yes? I know turtles & bullfrogs eat fish so you don't want them. I don't know anything about crawdads.
-
DR Vixmom you said you were going to be good about leaving work early, not that I truly believed you. ;) Please take care of yourself.

Just talked to jhvw. He said that David is still doing well and has actually gotten out of bed already!..
Jon said he tried to get on HHW most of the day, but because of the storm there the wireless wasn't very good at the hospital. He was driving as we spoke and he said there are trees down everywhere, the big TV antenna at the tv station he used to work at fell down and many cell phone towers are down. They have power at the house, but no cable or phone service. so he can't get on the internet there.
He's going to stop by as soon as he can get a good internet connection. He said thanks to everyone for being so supportive today.
-
DR Cilla thank you for the update. I'm shocked David got out of bed-WOW! :)
With that mess all around them thank goodness the power still works. I hope his cell phone does too.
-

I'm shocked too. He isn't walking anywhere, but just standing. I think it was only for a moment.
Jon's cell phone was going as we spoke. He's going to charge it when he gets home. He sounds exhausted and relieved. He's going back up to see David this evening and then will go home for the night. My guess is they will all sleep well tonight!
-
Great news, Cillaliz. Man, they don't let you rest for a second after surgery any more, do they?
-
Very good news, Cillaliz! Thanks for the update. ;D

I'm guessing yes. Jon will either be here (HHW) or give me a call...unless he falls asleep first. I can tell he's really exhausted
-
DR Cilla, my guess is you will also sleep better tonight.
Actually, I've been worried and am very relieved, but have been so physically exhausted from all the work I did around the house that I slept very well the past two nights. I'm looking forward to sleeping in tomorrow and then Sunday will be up very early to do the 5K walk. BTW, I'm almost positive I'm in the top 10 fundraisers, so I should be getting some sort of sparkling prize on Saturday after the walk. I picked up my t-shirt and number today. I'm really looking forward to this
-
I've been enjoying the posts from various parts of the world!!
Nothing new here. I'm off to dinner with my injured french horn player and then it's off to another evening of The King and I - which is still making me cry every night!
-
Time to go make eggplant
-
DR Cilla to be in the top 10 fundraisers is impressive. Great job! I wonder what they will give you. Isn't there some kind of gift bag everyone gets?
-
DR Kerry - Do the MARY episodes include the famed "Driftwood" number?
Why yes, indeed! Just watched it again.
-
Be good to each other tonight. Be back laters!
-
Greetings from Florence (Kentucky, not Italy)! Richard and I arrived in time to move into our hotel room and get to CVG to pick up his seminary classmate from California who's here for the ordination. We met Rob and Mary Linda at the Montgomery Inn Boathouse on the Ohio River for a fabulous dinner of barbecued ribs, chips, and Graeter's ice cream. Showed Dennis some of Cincinnati and brought Rob & ML back here for a luncheon logistics briefing. I'm ready to crash.
-
Glad to hear that David's surgery went so well - sleep well, DRs Cillaliz and jhvw!
-
Also glad to hear of DR Jose's safe arrival in the Philippines (Monkey's, too!).
-
DR Ginny, Have a fantastic time & Ordination!
-
Thanks, Jane! Now that we're here and have the logistics all worked out, I'm getting excited about tomorrow's event.
-
It is very exciting! :D

PIGS AND BATTLESHIPS.
:)
Your brethern did you proud.
-
DR Cilla to be in the top 10 fundraisers is impressive. Great job! I wonder what they will give you. Isn't there some kind of gift bag everyone gets?
Not really a gift bag. There were a few coupons in the packet I picked up. We do all get t-shirts
-
Glad to hear that David's surgery went so well - sleep well, DRs Cillaliz and jhvw!
Thanks Ginny. Vibes for a wonderful ordination!
-
I began my evening with PIGS AND BATTLESHIPS. The director was kind of the Quentin Tarentino of his day in Japan, and the film was a satirical comedy-drama about the mores among some yakuzas and some would-be kept women at the American Naval Base in Japan (in Yokosuka, I believe).
Interesting more from the woman's story than from the man's, and the director clearly sees her as the heroine of the piece. The man dies with his head in a toilet.
-
There were two bonus features on the disc. The first was an hour-long documentary shot for French TV on the director as he went through a typical day and remembered some of his films. Irritatingly, the films themselves weren't identified in the generous helping of clips included in the documentary.
-
The other was a 15-minute critique of the movie by critic Tony Rayns. Criterion often uses him to do commentary or video essays on their Japanese films, and he's one of the best.
-
Next, I watched last night's 30 ROCK. Pretty silly stuff but Alan Alda had some good lines as Alec Baldwin's father.
-
And I ended my evening with tonight's GHOST WHISPERER. It was a fine episode though I never quite get as worked up over the stories about troubled teens as I do the ones dealing with adults in crisis.
-
As I mentioned to bk when he was here, his posting of "Turkey Lurkey time" from his December Bacharach show benefit is now over 1,000 views, and that's in less than a week.

-
Here's the tower from the TV station where JHVW used to work. He always thought it was going to fall some day...he was right the storm today took it down
-
I'm going to do a bit of writing before heading downstairs, so I'll jump off-line now and get to work.
Good night!
-
Back from a fabulously fabulous dinner at Fred and Skip's. Food was, as always, exemplary, as was the company. More in the notes, which I must now attempt to write - and yes, there is video, which I'm uploading now to tinypic.com and will post as soon as I can.

DR MBARNUM's furniture, DR JEANNE's flu.....just a typical day on HHW!
-
Thunderstorms predicted over night for my hometown....so we shall see.

I watched some of the Brent Barrett/Rachel York KISS ME KATE again. Michael Barresse is a fine Bill....and Barry McNeill and Nick Winston are also terrific as the other two suitors.
-
Good Afternoon!
-Well, it's just after noon here, where I am. :)
And, yes...
I'm up, I'm up... And I really don't think I've slept more than three hours - if that! - since Wednesday. -But since I "lost" a day traveling... Hmmm...
