Good morning, all! I will be E&T for the next two days. I am announcing it loud and clear so there will be no bitchslapping in this house for my absence.
Speaking of such an action, I might get one today or tomorrwo at the Library of Congress, although I certainly hope not. The repercussions of last week's resignation are not over yet. I am hoping for a lovely visit with a few friends, a lot of photocopying and an easy exit. We'll see.

Happy birthday to my LA bound husband!

Hope there are no embolisms involved...

See you all later...MUCH later!

DR VIXMOM the Dream-O-Matic 6000 says that your dream about the clock shows that you are very interested in the past. You have divided your life into two separate areas, you feel that the one you don't really care about it dominating the other. You will soon remedy that by realizing that time is more important that money - and your grandfather would be pleased with the decision.

So does that mean that Peggy Lee is singing this morning? ;)

TOD-- and I did like the two of them together in "The Strange Love of Martha Ivers" with Lizabeth Scott.
I also liked the dueling Burt and Kirk in the Roger Ramjet cartoons.

I watched the movie 500 DAYS Of SUMMER yesterday. I know a lot of people loved it and some did not. I guess I fall somewhere in the middle (although more towards liking it). I thought it was cute and quirky. I liked the 2 leads. I thought the concept of going back and forth in time was sort of interesting. But while some might have disliked the ending, I actually really liked the ending.

Thursday morning greetings!
And a very happy haineshisway.com birthday to embolism, whoever that is.
An embolism is exactly what I'm trying to avoid. The reason they told me to restrict my movements is to reduce the risk of the clot in my leg breaking into pieces that travel to the lungs, becoming pulmomary embolisms.
-
Why do I keep starting pages when I can't dance?
-
Good morning!
Not quite as chilly this morning, but I wore a heavier jacket anyway and was comfortable. This is going to be our last pretty day for a while. Rain, sleet, and possibly snow are in the forecast for the next two days.
-
I'm looking forward to finishing JAG today. I've enjoyed the last season, but nonstop viewing over three days gets old even with the best shows.
-
And I heard no UPS truck this morning (at least, not so far). That might mean I won't have to ignore WHIP IT in order to finish JAG. We'll see.

TV tonight is a mixture of new episodes and reruns.
Fox and the CW are showing new episodes of their shows BONES, FRINGE, SUPERNATURAL, and VAMPIRE DIARIES.

Of course, there IS a new episode of BURN NOTICE tonight on USA. Can't think of missing that!
-
And I still have a pile of shows from this week I haven't gotten to yet (but which I should be able to get to this evening): WHITE COLLAR, NCIS: LA, LEVERAGE, PSYCH.

How great that FINIAN'S RAINBOW's new cast recording and the Blu-ray of THE MUSIC MAN are coming out on the same day. Two great treasures at one time!

HAPPY BIRTHDAY GREG, DH OF DR EDI!
-
So...
I did end up getting eight hours of sleep last night. Alas, those eight hours didn't really start until around 3:00am since the NYPD dropped by our building last night around 2:00am. Apparently, someone - or something - tried to get into the top floor apartment last night. Again. -It happened last week too.
Since my bedroom is opposite the front door and foyer, I could hear my upstairs neighbors talking with the police when they arrived. So, I got out of bed, opened my front door and checked to see that everything was all right. And then since our apartment is the only unit with direct access to the backyard/patio area, the NYPD asked if they could go back there and check things out. They didn't see anyone back there, however, they did scare the big raccoon that sometimes hangs out back there. -And that raccoon can make quite the racket when it's on the fire escape. So...
I think I finally drifted off to sleep around 3:30...
Good Afternoon.
-
Happy Birthday to DR edisaurus' DH Greg!!!!!

Oy, oy and triple oy. I had been scheduled for a follow up CT scan after my bout with kidney stones and arrived promptly at the hospital this morning expecting to just "go through the donut" like last time. But, noooooo. First I had to drink a humongous glass of some potion, wait for an hour, and then get injected with dye, to which I had an immediate allergic reaction. It was not fun. And I may have some serious kidney issues, so I'm a bit worried.
-
And though I've mentioned this before, I will again, since I can. ;) OUT OF THE PAST reuses "The First Time I Saw You," a minor 1937 hit introduced (I wouldn't go so far as to actually say "sung") by Miss Frances Farmer in TOAST OF NEW YORK. Of course both films were RKO releases, which probably explains it.

I'm not sure what it was, but it made me feel incredibly flushed (evidently a "normal" reaction), but then I started sneezing uncontrollably, which is one of the symptoms of being allergic to it. It made it very hard to hold my breath while the CT scanner was vivisecting me (figuratively speaking). ;) They kept me some extra time to see if I would develop hives, but nothing showed up and I feel nominally better now.

MAYBE MINOR SPOILERS FOR THE MOVIE 500 DAYS OF SUMMER:
I watched the movie 500 DAYS Of SUMMER yesterday. I know a lot of people loved it and some did not. I guess I fall somewhere in the middle (although more towards liking it). i liked the ending, much of the getting there was my issue.
I hadn't really read much about the movie before watching it. So i did not realize it was not a true romantic comedy (although they make that very clear right from the start of the movie).
Usually at the end of these movies you feel good. And obviously since they make it clear from the start of the movie that this will not be happening ... it makes it hard to know how to end it.
But i thought the ending was quirky and fun. And i loved the play on names. I think they just wanted people to leave not feeling depressed (which would have happened with a different ending).
To me the ending is a big part of how i feel about the movie on a whole. And i think this ending made me like the movie more than i would have otherwise.

Vibes for healthy kidneys, DR JMK!

What a gorgeous day outside. I enjoyed doing my errands and then going out to meet John for lunch. (He's still in Microsoft training so we had to go to a place near his training facility.)
-
Tomorrow at this time, we may be staring at snow, ice, and typical winter weather. From the looks of today, one might think that spring was getting ready to erupt.
-
When I got in, I immediately watched the last three episodes remaining of JAG. Very good, very entertaining, and a lovely way to end the series.
-
Next I skimmed through today's ONE LIFE TO LIVE. Both fellas weren't on, but Oliver was, and so I watched all of his scenes. He's always a pleasure to watch at work.
-
I skimmed through AS THE WORLD TURNS as well. Nothing of interest, but Dr. Pill was in the previews for tomorrow so I assume Luke will be present, too.
-
I never heard anyone at the door, but when I checked the front stoop to see if the UPS man had delivered anything, BOY was I surprised. I got BARNABY JONES - the First Season, which I was expecting. WHIP IT arrived as I suspected it would. AND, I got three packages from Criterion. Three of their releases for February on both DVD and Blu-ray along with GEORGE BERNARD SHAW ON FILM.
I am going to be very busy.

Here's the advance announcement of the new Kritzerland release. The usual drill - if you want it, pay directly via paypal - $19.98 plus 3.75 shipping to kritzerland at adelphia dot net.
BLESS HIM! DAMN HIM!
Kritzerland is proud to present a new limited edition CD soundtrack:
ELMER GANTRY
Music Composed and Conducted by Andre Previn
In 1960, Elmer Gantry, based on the best-selling 1927 novel by Sinclair Lewis, was brought to the screen by writer/director Richard Brooks. The story of a womanizing con man and an evangelist selling religion all across America was an instant success with critics and audiences. Burt Lancaster gave one of his greatest performances as Gantry, for which he won a well-deserved Oscar. Jean Simmons was pure magic as Sister Sharon Falconer, and sweet ingénue Shirley Jones amazed everyone with her fantastic performance as Lulu, the former lover of Gantry and now prostitute – she, too, won a well-deserved Oscar. The supporting cast was filled with great character actors, including Arthur Kennedy, Edward Andrews, Dean Jagger, John McIntire, and Hugh Marlowe. The film would also win an Oscar for Brooks’ screenplay, and received one other key nomination for Best Scoring of a Drama or Comedy Picture.
The competition was tough that year – the other nominees were Ernest Gold’s Exodus, Tiomkin’s The Alamo, Alex North’s Spartacus, and Elmer Bernstein for The Magnificent Seven (not even nominated was Herrmann’s Psycho). While the prize would go to Exodus, Previn’s score stood tall amongst that year’s film scores.
Previn’s score is almost a character in the film. It’s a surprisingly short score, but it informs the film every time it’s used. The “Main Title” is one of the most propulsive scene-setters in the history of film scoring, an astonishing virtuosic showpiece that sets the stage perfectly. While there are some standard religious songs sprinkled throughout the film, Previn never resorts to quoting from them in his actual score cues. In a career filled with brilliant scores (including Bad Day At Black Rock, Two For The Seesaw, Inside Daisy Clover, The Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse, and his four for Billy Wilder, One, Two, Three, Irma La Douce, Kiss Me, Stupid, and The Fortune Cookie) Elmer Gantry remains a highlight of his distinguished career.
Elmer Gantry was originally issued on a United Artists LP, and then on CD by Ryko. For this release, we’ve used the original three-track album takes, with much improved sound. There were occasional dropouts on the master tape, all of which were heard on the Ryko release – they’ve all been fixed for this release. Ryko discovered some outtakes, which they put into a bonus suite, but we found one outtake cue that they inadvertently left off. We’ve put the entire score in film order, including the outtakes. We’ve also included the original album presentation, as well. Also included on the Ryko were a few other bonus tracks of the religious music – but they were included as acapella vocals. The original LP presentation included the instrumental tracks for “Shall We Gather At The River” and “Stand Up For Jesus.” For the first time we’ve combined the vocals and instrumental tracks and present them as they were used in the film.
It gives us great pleasure to finally present the score as heard in the film, in clear, crisp sound. It’s a Previn masterpiece.
This release is limited to 1000 copies only. The price is $19.98 plus shipping.
CD will ship by the first week of March – however, preorders placed directly through Kritzerland usually ship one to five weeks earlier (we’ve been averaging four weeks early). To place an order, see the cover, or hear audio samples, just visit www.kritzerland.com.

Apparently, we had snow this morning here in NYC. Alas, I slept through all of it. And, alas, I've been in a fog this whole afternoon as a result of last night's interrupted sleep. Ah, well...

Around this time of year, we can go from spring to deep winter in the blink of an eye. So glad I got my usual Friday errands done today so that if you DO get bad weather, I won't have to be out in it.

The Gantry score is an all-time favorite of mine, ever since I saw the film in 1960. We found one little :40 cue that had never been used anywhere, and hearing the score in film order without the source music is a wonderful thing.

DR Michael S - Of course not! Do you really think the creators of "Lost" would reveal any actual facts about the final season right now?
*"Spoilers" in the NY Times do appear on their "Arts Beat" blog from time to time, and they always preface each article with a "spoiler alert" if spoilers do appear. -And those "spoilers" are only posted after an episode has aired.

The only real spoiler - which isn't much of a spoiler - is that the writers are still writing the final, yet-to-be-filmed episodes, and that the creators of "Lost" have had the "final image" in their heads from day one.

I get what you're saying about the movie being a breath of fresh air. But romantic comedies usually have some kind of happyish resolution for the couple involved. And this movie starts off by saying that is not what this movie is about. So to me it's not really a romantic comedy at all. The end was cliched. But i think that is what people want when they go in expecting a romantic comedy.

I think next week's recap show will basically be a "pop-up show" without the pop-ups. Similar to what they did before last season. Just plot point to plot point, mystery to mystery.

The only thing that might be considered a minor spoiler is that one character who has been gone a while will be back, but it doesn't say how or anything like that.

I checked my tv for next week and there is a 1 hour LOST recap show at 8pm. Following that is the 2 hour premiere (on tuesday).
I wonder if the recap show will have those green captions at the bottom.
I know i said it before re: the season finale they showed this week, but the information they give with those green bubbles is how everything happening pertains to all seasons. Whoever thought of doing this was a genius!
I think next week's recap show will basically be a "pop-up show" without the pop-ups. Similar to what they did before last season. Just plot point to plot point, mystery to mystery.
Okay thanks. I will still watch it. Because watching the season finale made me realize how much i forgot. So i'm sure there is stuff from the other seasons that i've forgotten about too.
I think it was a good idea for them to show last season's finale (to remind everyone). I think this recap show (at 8pm tues) is also for viewers who have never seen the show before. I think they are trying to get some new viewers. Although personally if i wanted to start the show now i would do what BK did and watch the other seasons first.

Did any DRs order/buy any of the various souvenir box sets of Season Five? A friend of mine has been showing off her "Dharma Initiative Orientation Packet" (http://www.amazon.com/Lost-Complete-Season-Initiative-Orientation/dp/B0027CSPOC/ref=sr_1_3?ie=UTF8&s=dvd&qid=1264726846&sr=8-3), and has been looking for someone with a working VCR to play the accompanying tape.

I saw that at Costco, but I'm not getting it. I don't have any of the other seasons. Otherwise, I still have a working VCR...and it's hooked up to my DVD burner so that I can make DVDs. But I suppose that your friend wants someone with a VCR who's local. :)

PAGE FIVE SWORD DANCE!!

;D
-
I don't know why. ::)
-
Well...
It looks like CBS has found it's cry-fest equivalent to ABC's "Extreme Makeover: Home Edition" with "Live for the Moment".
Just sayin'.
-
I've done about fourteen pages and have to take a break for a few hours - maybe I'll do another page at that point or maybe I'll smooth out what I wrote today. We shall see.

Yes, I got it. The VCR tape is about 5 minutes or so of the Doctor giving instructions.

OH! OH! OH! OH!
So....
1) Go to www.kayak.com
2) Select "Flights"
3) Book a "One-Way" flight from SYD to LAX on 09/22/2010
4) Look down the available airlines on the left-hand side of the page...

Good evening. Happy Birthday to Edi's DH Greg!!
-
Don't have much to say today. Busy with work and getting ready for my open house on Tuesday. I have a couple friends who have decided to come to town for it and will be spending the night with me. SO, now I have to clean house and prep for the open house. It will be well worth it. For the open house there could be anything from a few people to over 100. I have no idea which it will be lol
-
That's exciting and frightening, Cillaliz! I hope you get a nice moderate turnout.

DITTO! :D

The Chamber of Commerce is doing a ribbon cutting so it's on their newsletter. I don't know how many show up for that. I sent out over 100 emails, thinking many wouldn't be interested. I'm starting to hope that the people telling me they will be there are just being nice, lol. It will be fun no matter what. I'll get to show the office off and see a lot of people. I've blocked off Wednesday morning so I can have breakfast out with my friends. It will be nice.
My family won't be there. They sent me money to buy a plant. That's fine, actually, this is really more about marketing my business and letting my friends see my new office,
-
i forgot to mention, to keith's joy i have begun washing dishes. i can't do many at a time, & only the basics. cookware is beyond me. the therapist said it is good therapy. i still can't cook yet, except to make basmati & steamed vegetables.
-
The reason I think it may be a good crowd is that it's right after work and the weather is supposed to be nice. Everyone has cabin fever so any excuse to get out is welcome
-
cilla, if more people show than expected do you have a back-up plan for quickly restocking the food?
-
Buh-Bye....
Disney shuts doors on Miramax (http://www.guardian.co.uk/film/2010/jan/28/miramax-closes-disney-harvey-weinstein)
Oh, my! Directly affects my present job.
how?
Miramax films are among those I review.

That's so funny about (500) DAYS OF SUMMER. The slick ending with the (probable) girl of his dreams there didn't sit well with me at all, very cliched compared to the rest of the film which was like a breath of romantic comedy fresh air otherwise.
it worked for me since it fit the theme of the movie.
Too slick, too easy, too ordinary rom-com stuff after the innovations of the rest of the movie.
lol, except i disagree with you on the movie. true, it was an unusual storyline & i should have found it endearing. for me, it didn't quite succeed.
Sorry it didn't work for you. It sure did for me until that unfortunately trite ending.
-
Well, I have ordered 72 premade cocktail bun sized sandwiches. I bought 66 cans of pop and 48 bottles of water (we're fine with extra as we can offer it to clients and drink it ourselves), 6 big bags of chips, a big bag of chex mix (I may get another) 1/2 sheet cake and I will be making a huge vege tray. I'm considering a couple of those little rings of shrimp, but not sure about that. I'm not serving wine or beer. The invite just says "light munchies". I've decided it is what it is. If I run out of food, I run out of food. If it's really crazy, I'm sure Gretchen and Carol would do a quick run to the store for me.

Dr. Marvin Candle at your service.
:D
I didn't actually get that set for review, but I suspect the tape was made especially for the box set. I'm guessing that because each of the stations on the island had its own separate orientation tape, and Pierre Chang assumed a new identity on each one of them.

On the other hand if we get an unexpected snow storm, I will be eating cocktail sandwiches for a very long time
-
I had such a fun evening just kicking back with a bunch of fun shows.
I began with HUMAN TARGET. Pretty good action tale, but the team didn't seem quite as adept this week as in previous episodes. I guess they can't be too invulnerable or there would be no suspense at all.
-
Next I watched BETTER OFF TED with the charming, funny (and a trifle more bulked up) Eddie McClintock as guest star. It was a very funny episode. Such a peculiar show with a basketful of nuts, all of them tasty.
-
On a sadder note, I found out today that Candace had tried to call in and say she couldn't make it to work on account of the weather, but they told her to go. She was on her way home driving very slowly because of the white out conditions and a semi truck speeding along behind her literally ran over her car. A pile up resulted behind the truck. That is my biggest fear in driving in bad weather, that a truck behind me won't be able to stop and will smush me.
-
Then I watched WHITE COLLAR. Loved the snooping and "sting" style caper, and glad to see both sides learning each others' identities and assisting with cases and problems.
-
Next up was PSYCH, and a fun caper with John Cena as guest star doing a good job as this super operative.
-
Then came tonight's BONES with a gay-themed episode which I really enjoyed. Nice to see Robert Gant as one of the guest stars even if his role was only for one scene. I should have put the mystery together better, but I was too distracted by Brendan Fehr as Booth's gorgeous brother to keep my mind on the case.
-
I concluded my evening viewing with tonight's SUPERNATURAL, a fun episode played a little more for laughs than usual until it turned deadly serious during the second half.
Once again, I missed Castiel, but I noticed in the previews that he'll be back next week.
-
Tomorrow my work project will be WHIP IT on Blu-ray. Sure took its sweet time getting here.
-
How awful, Cillaliz. It sounds very much like one of our dust storms.

Although I really like jeff probst (i think he is excellent when he co-hosts with Kelly Ripa) and i really like many reality shows ... I'm not that big on cry fests. So I"m skipping this one.
Although apparently next week there is going to be some sort of survivor episode before the new season starts the week after. That i will watch.
-
DR Cillaliz - How is Candace?
Cillaliz posted this on Tuesday:
In our most recent blizzard on Monday, an acquaintance was in a major pile up on Interstate 29. I knew yesterday she wasn't in good shape, but didn't know until today that she died. Candace was a really cool woman. She was married to a chef and they ran a couple different organc/local food restaurants. She went back to school later in life and was either now a social worker or about to become one. She had 3 daughters, I think the youngest may be high school age. Once again we weren't close, but she was a good friend of a good friend so I saw her quite often at different social gatherings. What a sad day for her family.
:(
-
And now...to home.
Until later.
-
DR Cillaliz - How is Candace?
She's the one who died the other day. She was taken to the hospital after the accident, but was brain dead.
-
DR Cillaliz - My apologies for not keeping names and timelines straight in my head. Again, my condolences.

As I understood it, this was a kind of backdoor pilot for a possible series if the ratings from tonight are favorable.
-
DR Cillaliz - My apologies for not keeping names and timelines straight in my head. Again, my condolences.
It's ok, Jose. I don't expect everyone to keep everything straight that's posted here, I know I can't. Thanks. We weren't close, but this one has gotten to me. I'm going to the visitation and prayer service tomorrow after work. I don't think I'll do the funeral on Saturday, I just have too much to do to get ready for the open house.
-
Bad weather has not started here yet, but it is cold. Heaven only knows what we'll be facing tomorrow.
-
Friday is my rest day from walking, so rain or shine, I get to be inside tomorrow morning. The bad weather is supposed to extended to Saturday, so I may be treadmilling it then.
-
And now I'm going to head downstairs and put myself to bed. With all the stuff that came in today (a very daunting stack of discs and box sets), I am going to be SO busy starting tomorrow.
-
Oh, rats!
Good night!
-
Tomorrow I've cleared my schedule. I was going to work on office work and I may do some of that, but I think I'll work on the finishing touches on the office. I need to buy the plant from my parents, use my free flowers for Jan and free blooming plant for Feb, if they'll let me do both so I have some nice flowers for a center piece and to freshen up the place. I have photos to frame, a couple pictures to hang, I'd like to find a couple chairs etc. It will be good to be doing something so positive. It would be nice if the government would pay me for all the claims that are pending - some since November - but that's how the government works
-
How awful, Cillaliz. It sounds very much like one of our dust storms.
A blizzard is very much like a dust storm, only you also have to try to avoid sliding off the road because of the ice and snow
-
Speaking of photos to frame, I can't find some of my photos with folks like Johnny Cochrane. I had them not long ago and was going to reframe them, but now I can't find the photos! I can reprint some of them, but not all of them because a few of them were film not digital. Better go do that before bed.
-
If any of you have bad weather and are thinking about driving anyway, don't. It just isnt' worth it.
-
Finished with my viewing and shall now take a hot shower then maybe look at today's writing.

Not if I'm understanding you correctly. It's the same actor and the same general setup, but I don't remember having seen any snippets from this on the show.

Well, someone had to say it.

I'd really like to be here for Page Seven, but, alas...
Goodnight.
-
I'd like to be here for page seven.
-
But since we've had nothing but WUSSBURGERS for weeks, I don't believe we'll be seeing page seven.
-
Speaking of page seven, I wrote seventeen pages today - pretty good. We're now shooting The Creature Wasn't Nice. This is a particularly fun section to write, as I've told very few of these stories to anyone.
-
We made it! A dear old friend from Atlanta cooked dinner for us in an amazing house in Silverlake with a panorama view of LA and a most excellent garden and bomb shelter. He's a doc filmmaker we've both worked with in Atlanta. He moved away when his daughter was a year old to be near the family in LA. Now, the same daughter is starting high school. How did THAT happen?
-
Now time to ketchup, but I may have to tomorrow. We only got a few hours sleep before we had to get up and leave and after driving from the airport to Santa Clarita and back south, we're pretty spent.
-
I do want to say thanks to you all for the birthday greetings to Greg! I will pass them on tomorrow since we're passing OUT now!
