Well, you've read the notes, the notes were filled with discovery, and now it is time for you to post until the amazing cows come home.
-
And the word of the day is: CACOGRAPHY!
-
bk - no one expects you to lose money on these releases. Why can't you raise the price a bit for a 2-CD set? If doing so will give you a margin of comfort, why not?
-
CACOGRAPHY!
CACOGRAPHY is to writing as CACAPHONY is to sound.

I think the 2-Cd set with a price bump would be fine.....if people WANT this CD, they REALLY WANT IT...and will be pleased to have the soundtrack. I love my re-recordings of Bernstein's THE CARPETBAGGERS and WALK ON THE WILD SIDE, but soundtracks would be great, too.
-
Rehearsal was quite good last night, and I am looking forward to the dress rehearsal tonight. The lights really do look good, and most of the songs were well done.
The Moors did their scene better than they ever have.

I'm expecting a box of DVDs today, forwarded to me from Los Angeles. I'm not quite sure what's in it, but I think that one title is THE SOLOIST.

It had been bright and sunny as I drove into Philly this morning but now in a matter of minutes the clouds have rolled in and covered the sky. Looks like the stormy weather that's been predicted is arriving.

And The Song Of The Day Is: I'M GONNA SIT RIGHT DOWN AND WRITE MYSELF A LETTER
-
Good morning, all! Well, I was awake around 8:15 but it took me 30 more minutes to get the energy to get out of bed. I had several weird dreams, one involving the late great Larry Kert, but I remember next to nothing of them now. The left leg continues to be a problem, which I don't like, but I had a loverly visit from our DR Jose last night and he suggested I google "sciatica exercises" and try a few. So I now have around 8 pages of printed exercises to begin.
I have plenty of work here for the weekend: some Kern Oh, Boy! to be examined and contemplated and 4, I think, numbers from Life begins at 8:40 to proof. I'm hoping a check arrives in the post today, and if it arrives, I'll force myself to make a trip to the bank, which is luckily only a block from the apartment.
TOD:

Good Morning!
I'm up, I'm up... And I really want to go back to bed, but...

VIBES, VIBES & MORE VIBES OF HEALTH TO ALL!!!
-
I've got another day of visiting with relatives. It is nice when you like your relatives and they are fun.
-
...But since I'll be heading down to Virginia this afternoon, I need to stay out of bed. Although, with the current forecast for storms this afternoon and evening, well... We shall see.
-
DR Jane - Good to hear that you're having a good time wherever you are today. :)

And, yes, with all the storms predicted for today...
~~~~~TRAVEL VIBES TO DRS FJL AND JULIE~~~~~
Congratulations to DR Miss Karen on her entertaining first guest blog post (http://www.tvtango.com/news/detail?id=60)!
-
DR Jane - glad that you are having such a good time with family!!!!!! :)
-
The DH and I will be spending time with family next week at the Jersey shore.
-
Good Morning!
Regarding the CD, Bruce, I think you ought to release it as two CD set if the tracks are that good and worth including. Yes, the profit margin might be lower, but you can look it as a goodwill/prestige gesture. Right?
-
Previous travel vibes amended to include DR JoseSPiano.
-
I don't understand why bk is compelled to release a 2 CD set at a single CD price. ???
-
TOD: Same music as last week more or less.
Movies? "On a Clear Day" -- No, not the (horribly cast, horribly botched and horribly dated) musical, but a British film about a man who wants to swim the English Channel
"A Walk on the Moon"
-
But then I don't know anything about the music industry. :)
-
A huge HHW DITTO on all the vibes to all!!!!
-
My thought would be release the unreleased mono version with the songs and the other title. Forget about the re-recorded version of the score. It would make it more attractive to buy and (I know you won't care) the people on the other board won't complain.
-
Thank you, DR DAW.
-
Good morning!
Bright but partly cloudy here with another of those afternoon storm forecasts today. Just as yesterday didn't look possible for that kind of storm, today doesn't either, but we had a storm yesterday, so I'm expecting one today, too.
-
DR JoseSPiano - have you sampled the $5-per-slice Di Fara Pizza (http://www.nytimes.com/2009/07/31/nyregion/31pizza.html?_r=1&scp=1&sq=DiFara&st=cse)??
The last time I was out there was when the slice cost $4. It was a very good slice of pizza, and was worth the wait and the $4 price tag. However, now that it's $5 - coupled with a $4.50 round-trip subway fare - well... Hmmm....
*One of my recently discovered favorite slices is from L'Asso (http://lassonyc.com/) right at the hub of SoHo, the Lower East Side, Little Italy and Chinatown. They are one of the "D.O.C." certified Neapolitan pizzerias in town, and a slice of their plain (margherita) is only $2, with the special pizzas going for $3 a slice.
-
DR Elmore,
Hope you can feel better soon.
I didn't like CONFESSIONS OF A SHOPAHOLIC either, but I had to finish it since I was reviewing it. In reading other reviews, I note a good many people found more to like about it than I did.
I don't understand why bk is compelled to release a 2 CD set at a single CD price. ???
I have a feeling it may have to do with the contract, especially since some of the material has been previously released. But I'm sure bk will chime in once he's up and about.
Two days ago Vixdad opened a letter rom our insurance co stating that as of August 1 our copay for emergency room visits would increase from $0.00 to $50.00 (unless admitted)
Well you know me, never one to pass up a bargain - I just had to squeeze in one more visit while it was free
-
As I mentioned last night, unless something arrives in the mail today that demands immediate review attention, I'll be taking the next two days off to relax and rebuild some strength. I am looking forward to seeing GREASE in high definition this afternoon. I'd rather Paramount had chosen FUNNY FACE or WHITE CHRISTMAS to put on Blu-ray if they wanted to do a musical transfer, but those, of course, wouldn't sell the numbers that GREASE would.
-
But do you know 'bout birthin' babies?
You betcha! :)
-
Alarming, DR vixmom. Is everything OK??
-
My heart starting beating too fast yesterday afternoon and after an hour of that I started to feel faint - when the other girls noticed I was sitting at my desk but not moving they grew concerned - when I was'nt able to respond to their questions they called 911
-
As for the DIRTY HARRY Blu-ray box, I just rewatched the original DIRTY HARRY on regular DVD a couple of months ago, but I haven't seen any of the others in years, so that's why I'm skipping the first film in the series (for now). I'll likely get to it tonight.
-
Turns out my heart was beating at 200 times a minute - the doctor says it should be at 80 or so....
it took a couple of hours for them to slow it to normal and then to determine that I did not have a heart attack or a stroke... they said teh cause was indeterminate....
I wonder if it could have anything to do with a high stress work environment and 12 - 16 hour work days
-just sayin'
DR Elmore,
Hope you can feel better soon.
I didn't like CONFESSIONS OF A SHOPAHOLIC either, but I had to finish it since I was reviewing it. In reading other reviews, I note a good many people found more to like about it than I did.
I was looking forward to it, since I rented it from Netflix, but I was both unamused and horrified at its moronic heroine and the been-there-done-it-better-elsewhere tiurns of the plot. I don't know how the film ended but I was too uninvolved to care.
-
By 10 PM they decided I could go home so here i am . today I must see my GP and ask him for a refereral to see a cardiologist
-
I am glad to see theat Elmore is well enough to post --- I have been praying for you Larry - I hope you are all better very soon
DR vixmom, you have got to stop these desperate bids for attention! :)
We love you just as you are and want you healthy for a long long time. If the job is that stressful, start looking for another or go part-time until your health is back. You don't deserve this, and your employers should be helping you out by making it less stressful for you.
DR Jose re: your cold questions from last night.
I'd say it's 100% a cold (and not allergies). My niece and sister both had/have it this week.
re: taking sudafed. I really try to avoid taking things like that unless totally necessary. For some reason my body doesn't handle it well. It would make my nose stop. But medicines seem to go right through me. IF i took one sudafed, i would be in bed and unable to drive/do anything for 24 hours. I would have no runny nose, but i would not be able to move!
I guess i could try half or a third of a pill. But advil cold and sinus seems to help my sinuses and my cold a bit (although it does not totally stop my nose from running).
I felt really bad last night. A bit better now (just nose still running).
-
One thing i keep forgetting is my soft laser. It can be used for sinus problems. I used it last night around my nose. And it felt so much better (combined with the advil).
I wonder if it would work on my back too?
-
Well, at least you can bring a note in from your doctor. :-\
DRs Jose and Cillaliz re: food processor blades being sharp.
They are very sharp. I wash mine by hand carefully. I have no idea how i've never cut myself now that you mention it. :)
I didn't hate the opening number of SYTYCD. And i'd consider myself quite picky!
Sad to see the two who went last night. :(
Thanks for your info last night DR Jeanne re: homeopathic meds.
I'm heading down now to get cleaned up to make my way toward completing my usual Friday errands. I suspect I'll be moving a bit more slowly than usual and it may take me longer to get5 them done. Ugh!
DR Elmore,
Hope you can feel better soon.
I didn't like CONFESSIONS OF A SHOPAHOLIC either, but I had to finish it since I was reviewing it. In reading other reviews, I note a good many people found more to like about it than I did.
I loved CONFESSIONS OF A SHOPAHOLIC when i saw it in the theatres. And i wasn't expecting to love it since i love the books and the movies usually don't do the books justice.
Even though there were a lot of changes from the first book, I think it's possible to like the movie (if you love the books).
I think this movie is a chick flick. A fun romantic comedy, but definitely aimed at women.
-
Oh gosh DR Vixmom just read about your emergency room visit.
Hope you feel better.
Is it possible that you could have been having a mild panic attack? One of the key symptoms is your heart racing very fast and you can't calm yourself.
Hope they find out what you have.
Vixmom, I can easily teach you how to be nonresponsive to coworkers without a 200 heartrate. :)
-
YIKES, DR Vixmom! Please, please take care of yourself!
-
BK, it is interesting to read about you watching LOST now.
The other day you mentioned that you didn't know how people could watch it every week with the commercials.
I'm sure watching it on dvd is convenient and appealing. But i believe most of us record it on our TIVOs/DVRs/PVRs and don't watch the commercials.
Hopefully by January you will be caught up and can watch and comment with us!
-
DR Vixmom, don't scare us like that! Please take care!!!!
-
And vibes to Elmore, I hope the excercises work. That pain you are dealing with just sounds terrible and I feel for you. I wish I could be there to assist.
-
I don't understand why bk is compelled to release a 2 CD set at a single CD price. ???
As he said in his column, it's because the composer is not well-known and he wants people to buy it.
I don't know how much of a bump he would need. I'd certainly think $5 more for a 2-CD set would not throw anyone off, but most 2-CD sets seem to go for $29.95 nowadays, so it's a crap shoot.
One thing in his favor, though: When the Varese Sarabande club released its gargantuan 6-CD Goldsmith set, the set vanished in a matter of days even though three of the CDs were material most buyers already owned.
-
My thought would be release the unreleased mono version with the songs and the other title. Forget about the re-recorded version of the score. It would make it more attractive to buy and (I know you won't care) the people on the other board won't complain.
Oh, yes they will. If they don't complain that the LP stereo mix wasn't included, they'll find something else to bitch about. They ALWAYS do.
-
DR Vixmom--OY!
You definitely need to reconsider your work environment. But until then, you could try some new stress coping skills. Can you check with your physician to approve some meditation classes? (Of course, then it would be up to you to make the time to take the classes.)
-
I think the employees don't all need to quit -- I think they need to hire more employees.
-
Good Afternoon!
Well, as I started to pack, a bit of my OCD-tendencies kicked in, and I started putting away some of the music books I had taken off my shelves over the past couple of weeks. Of course, I had to put them back in proper alphabetical order... In any case...
Now that that's done, I can finish getting ready for my quick trip down to Virginia this weekend. And since it will be a quick trip, I don't need - nor should - pack that much to take with me. So...
Laters....
I just finished proofing a number for "It was Long Ago" from LIFE BEGINS AT 8:40. It was an ordeal because of the number of wrong notes and stupid errors. It was like a Finale job I would do, and I'm wondering if the copyist farmed it out to his wife, who is notorious for her poor copy.
-
I am in trouble this weekend: all of my support team is out of town. I will have to cope on my own. Oy!
-
THE BOLD AND THE BEAUTIFUL was exciting today! We not only almost had a wedding but we got to see footage of the aging couple before their poor face lifts.
-
DR JRand, thank you for commenting on the Scotty Morrow interview that DR George was nice enough to put a link to.
Of couse, now whether "interesting" was a positive or negative, I am unsure...but at least I know someone on HHW read it.
-
I haven't stopped since waking up at eight-thirty (no noise today at all - even though they appear to be working). I woke up having made my decision, after watching the film that this soundtrack is from last night. I'm going ahead with the two CD set because it's just too good and too important not to. And we'll keep the price at 19.98, which will hopefully make it a must-have for people who may have this one score already and think that that's enough for them (I'm telling you, once you've heard the original film tracks, you will never ever listen to the rerecording again). Even if I wanted to leave off the stereo album I still couldn't make it one CD, because the film tracks run close to fifty-three minutes, and Lord Love A Duck is twenty-eight minutes and I won't press a CD over eighty minutes (I usually won't go over seventy-eight, because they don't guarantee the discs then).
So, it's a two CD set. And since the composer is a particular favorite of mine and since this is one of his finest scores (and one of its themes is a precursor to what would become his most well-known movie theme - and by well-known I mean in the pantheon of well-known). I'm very excited. I retitled about five of the tracks so they'd reflect what's happening in the film, and I had to edit together a track the way they did in the film - and the master will hopefully be ready and sent on Monday.
-
And that's what I've been doing all morning (plus the two-mile jog). Now I have to go return some tapes to the vault.
-
My package arrived. Aside from THE SOLOIST, it also contains:
I LOVE YOU, MAN
DOLLHOUSE, Season 1
PRISON BREAK: THE FINAL BREAK
OBSESSED
The Elvis performances from the Ed Sullivan Show.
So, I have plenty to watch this weekend.
-
Just returned some tapes to the vault, and shall now start writing liner notes.
-
The storms look like they are inching closer and closer to the city. I think I will make my way out of here a little earlier than usual so I can at least get over to Jersey side before they hit.
-
Did I miss an announcement, or is this a Hefti two-fer?
-
In which case, is it Harlow, and, if so, JR will buy 1000 copies, no problem. :)
DR Elmore,
Hope you can feel better soon.
I didn't like CONFESSIONS OF A SHOPAHOLIC either, but I had to finish it since I was reviewing it. In reading other reviews, I note a good many people found more to like about it than I did.
Even though there were a lot of changes from the first book, I think it's possible to like the movie (if you love the books).
I think this movie is a chick flick. A fun romantic comedy, but definitely aimed at women.
It may have been aimed at women, but if it's a good movie, it should have some kind of universal appeal. I ADORED THE DEVIL WERS PRADA and that was every bit a "ckick flick" as SHOPAHOLIC. But one was well directed with superb performances and a plot and characters we hadn't seen before. SHOPAHOLIC was cliched, dumb, and predictable.
-
I didn't have much trouble at all at the grocery store getting around and getting things in and out of the cart. I was lucky that the store wasn't really very crowded, and I got a very convenient close parking space, too.
-
While I ate lunch, I watched last night's THE MENTALIST rerun. This was another one where Patrick uses his "gifts" quite a bit during the show, and I just love those episodes. I remembered the episode, but I enjoyed seeing it again nevertheless.
-
I began my fun day of leisure viewing with an episode of MURDER SHE WROTE. Taking place in British Columbia, Jessica was investigating the dead of an ex-cop and a mining engineer whom he was blackmailing. I had never seen it before, and I didn't figure out the murderer. The clues offered were really limp ones, and I'm not sure it really played fair with the audience in giving us a chance to guess the killer's identity. However, by season 10, the writing was definitely beginning to suffer on MURDER SHE WROTE anyway. None of the cases thus far are nearly as good as the best ones from the early seasons of the show.
Oscar nominee Graham Greene was the most well known of the guest stars.
-
Next I watched the remainder of SHADOW OF THE THIN MAN. I think I forgot to mention last night that I had started rewatching this wonderful THIN MAN movie (the fourth in the series), but only got 2/3 of the way through last night before I stopped it so I could pick up with BURN NOTICE.
I really enjoy this THIN MAN (though ANOTHER THIN MAN remains my favorite mystery in the series), and I think this is the first time I had watched it on my "new" equipment. It looked really good.
-
Then I started GREASE on Blu-ray, but I only got to "Beauty School Dropout" so I'll pick up there when I go back down. The transfer looks very nice. Dolby TrueHD 5.1 audio has a nice range, but the soundtrack is definitely a thing of its era.
The cast has always looked too old for their roles, but in high def, Stockard Channing REALLY looks like everyone's mother.
-
With the remaining time, I scanned through today's THE YOUNG AND THE RESTLESS, but even though Adam was on, there was nothing really of interest to me.
-
I also skimmed through today's AS THE WORLD TURNS. Nothing of interest, and the boys weren't in the previews for next week either.
-
A huge HHW DITTO on all the vibes to all!!!!
And a huge HHW DITTO to your huge HHW Ditto!!! ;D
Topic of the Day: in my CD player is the original London cast recording of the new musical, Sister Act (http://www.dresscircle.co.uk/sectionitemdetails.asp?ContentID=2515)! ;D
-
The UPS man did bring another review item: Season 3 of DEXTER on Blu-ray, but it also doesn't come out until August 18th, so my two days off will continue. I will not be heading back to work until Sunday afternoon with the Blu-ray of KAGEMUSHA.
-
Now I have a few computer maintenance chores to tinker with, and then I'll head back down to finish GREASE and then join Harry Callaghan on an adventure to Blu-ray land.
Well you know me, never one to pass up a bargain - I just had to squeeze in one more visit while it was free
I know you like bargains, but don't you think this is overdoing it? :>)
Topic of the Day: in my CD player is the original London cast recording of the new musical, Sister Act (http://www.dresscircle.co.uk/sectionitemdetails.asp?ContentID=2515)! ;D
Let us know if it's any good. Has anyone heard any of the material from the musical version of "First Wives' Club" yet?
I haven't heard anything from "FWC" yet, but I've posted before that I love the song "The Life I Never Led (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aMRzSdltsMQ)" from Sister Act.
Interesting interview by DR MBARNUM with Mr Scotty Morrow.....
I guess Mikey couldn't exactly tell Scotty how many of us had crushes on him.
Good morning, all! Well, I was awake around 8:15 but it took me 30 more minutes to get the energy to get out of bed. I had several weird dreams, one involving the late great Larry Kert, but I remember next to nothing of them now.
As some of you may know, I was given an early b'day gift of a Nikon Coolpix camera - I'm still not sure if I'm completely enamored with it - and I have been playing with it on a daily basis.
Last night, I handed the camera over to DR FJL while DR Julie and I clowned around in front of a pillar in the hotel, these are the results:
As for the T.O.D.:
CD: SISTER ACT - Original London Cast
DVD/BLU-RAY:
WATCHMEN: DIRECTOR'S CUT - Blu-Ray; impressive film version of one of my favorite books. Blu-Ray is the way to go with this one - I think it looks better than the print I saw in theaters. I still wish that the theatrical version was included, since this is quite a long film, either that or put a forced intermission in it.
RACE - great fun from India. A twisted, tangled, nearly noir film which not only keeps one on the edge of one's seat, but, keeps one guessing right up to the final moments.
http://www.imdb.com/title/tt1017456/ (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt1017456/)
Earlier in the week, I re-watched (on DVD) THE TRIPLETS OF BELLEVILLE and Disney's HOME ON THE RANGE.
DR Elmore,
Hope you can feel better soon.
I didn't like CONFESSIONS OF A SHOPAHOLIC either, but I had to finish it since I was reviewing it. In reading other reviews, I note a good many people found more to like about it than I did.
I loved CONFESSIONS OF A SHOPAHOLIC when i saw it in the theatres. And i wasn't expecting to love it since i love the books and the movies usually don't do the books justice.
Even though there were a lot of changes from the first book, I think it's possible to like the movie (if you love the books).
I think this movie is a chick flick. A fun romantic comedy, but definitely aimed at women.
It may have been aimed at women, but if it's a good movie, it should have some kind of universal appeal. I ADORED THE DEVIL WERS PRADA and that was every bit a "ckick flick" as SHOPAHOLIC. But one was well directed with superb performances and a plot and characters we hadn't seen before. SHOPAHOLIC was cliched, dumb, and predictable.
Just because you didn't like it doesn't mean it was cliched, dumb and predictable. The story was the story as written in the book. It's not like they could change most things. I think there are some romantic comedies that while predictable can still be very enjoyable. I don't need every movie to be an Academy award winner.
I think the SHOPAHOLIC books are 100% geared towards women. And maybe they made a mistake not making the movie a bit more guy friendly. I do agree with you that chick flicks should still be appealing to men.
The part where i really disagree is just because something is NOT for your demographic does not make it bad. It's just not for you. I know you couldn't stand the lead character. But a lot of people love her!
-
The UPS man did bring another review item: Season 3 of DEXTER on Blu-ray, but it also doesn't come out until August 18th, so my two days off will continue. I will not be heading back to work until Sunday afternoon with the Blu-ray of KAGEMUSHA.
Hopefully Season 4 will start soon. It seems like forever since Season 3 ended!
The wags over at All That Chat are quite pleased with it. Personally, I think it is one of Alan Menken's finest.
I love Alan Menken's music. I like the CD a lot. The opening disco songs are great! The stage musical is set in 1978. :)
JMK, guess I gave some of the ball game away with Lord Love A Duck - it's really no secret that it's a two-fer of Hefti's brilliant How To Murder Your Wife and Lord Love A Duck - and now, a second CD with the never before released original score tracks to How To Murder Your Wife, which are amazing and so much better than the album rerecording, which is more like a Mancini pop album than a film score. Wife has some of the most memorable themes you'll ever hear in one motion picture. I'll be giving you all the early-bird special, probably on Monday or Tuesday. This is a must-have for lovers of melodic, fun film scores - think The Odd Couple meets Barefoot In The Park and you'll have an idea what to expect with How To Murder Your Wife.
Good to know about "How to Murder..." I like the themes as they are in the movie, so your find of the movie tracks and decision to release them are good things. I liked the fact that the two main themes in "How to Murder" are the same (more or less)-- just played differently. I think it and "Harlow" are two of Neil Hefti's best efforts.
I helped my (ex) mother-in-law move today, and I'm tired. It has also seemed much hotter today, although I think the temperature is still down a few degrees. In a bit, I have to go to a dinner for a friend who is here from out of town. I'm sure it will be nice, but at this particular moment, I'm not looking forward to being social with about 15 people (only about half of whom I know).
So, I'm off.........
-
Yea for Friday night. Stay up late.
Ikea and Target no longer sell prefab CD storage units light enough in weight for me to move myself.
Now what. I refuse to get rid of anything else. I've already purged twice. Everything else must stay.
Listening to The Trotter Trio , The Fantasticks in Jazz.
Well, I guess I better find my glasses and get things done.
I'm happy about the 2 cd set. ;D
Till later, near midnight as always.
Hopefully the nightowls will be there.
No, I didn't like it BECAUSE it was cliched, dumb, and predictable.
I began my evening of fun viewing by skimming through today's ONE LIFE TO LIVE. Nothing of interest for me. Hopefully next week will bring Kyle and Fish back into the spotlight.
-
Got back from Pittsburgh, where I enjoyed meeting td as if for the first time, and saw "Copacabana" which I enjoyed immensely, as did DR Julie.
-
I decided I'd save ROYAL PAINS to watch while I eat lunch tomorrow, so I turned off the DVR/cable box, and started on the rest of GREASE on Blu-ray.
Certainly better, sharper than the DVD, but this is certainly a notch below other musicals on Blu-ray like CHICAGO, ENCHANTED, HAIRSPRAY, SOUTH PACIFIC.
-
And of course a parody of "Copacabana" is called for:
(A chupa for those who don't know is a canopy for a Jewish wedding. Having said that:)
Her name was Lola, she was a shul girl
With a nice sheytl in her hair and a dress from who knows where
She would sing zmiros about the Bible
And while she watched him from afar, Tony studied for the bar
Across a crowded shul, she thought he’s way way cool
He was cute and he loved his mother
She was no one’s fool
At the Chupa, by the cabana
The hottest thing since heaven’s manna
At the Chupa by the cabana
Tony and Lola
Had schnapps with some cola
At the Chupa
They pledged their love
His name was Barry, he was a singer
When they raised Lola on a chair, Barry couldn’t help but stare
And when they dropped her, he ran right over
But Barry tried to make a move, Tony didn’t like that groove
And all the punch they’d drunk wrought havoc with their junk
One big kiss and a lot of passion
But well, who’d have thunk
At the Chupa by the cabana
They drank vodka with Tropicana
At the Chupa by the cabana
Tony and Barry
Decided to marry
At the Chupa
She lost her love
Her name is Lola
She was a shul girl
But though she married very well, had a story she could tell
She lives in Frisco, that lovely Lola
She wrote a play about her tale, the play had a movie sale
It played the Broadway boards and won like ten awards
She has a hit and she has a Tony
And attracts the hordes
“At the Chupah by the cabana”
The hottest play since “Oleanna”
At the Chupah by the cabana
Lola wed Luba
And signed a ketubah
At the chupah
She found her love
Next I put in THE ENFORCER. I remembered that I had also watched the DVD of MAGNUM FORCE not so long ago (love David Soul and Robert Urich in that motorcycle cop unit; they are glorious to behold).
I had seen the movie before, once, so it was good to see it again. Most of it looked spectacularly good compared to the DVDs of the other DIRTY HARRY movies I have, so this is a big step up in video quality.
Once again, Warners defaults to the Dolby Digital track, so I had to switch to the Dolby TrueHD track and start the film over. I'm sure the movie was released in mono, but this track certainly sounded impressive for a 1976 movie with this newly repurposed 5.1 track.
Tyne Daly certainly became a better actress in the years to come than she is here. And I'm so glad there was no kind of hokey romance dredged up between them. They had a good, professional relationship that was building nicely.
-
Still in the mood for mystery, I picked another Hercule Poirot TV-movie off ther Poirot shelf: THE MYSTERY OF THE BLUE TRAIN.
Agatha Christie always claimed this was her worst book, but I certainly think PASSENGER TO FRANKFURT is far worse. At any rate, the screenwriter smoothed out anything in the boook that might have been problematic and made a genuinely surprising mystery of some complexity, and this one was cast very well, well, with one exception. Elliott Gould is pretty awful as the American millionaire businessman. Has he forgotten how to act?
Lindsay Duncan plays a matriarch on the verge of bankruptcy delightfully.
-
That was great, FJL (even though there were lots of words I don't know).
-
Thanks, Laura!
I've finished my evening surf and can now head down to bed very early. It's been nice getting to bed at an earlier hour than usual some of the past few nights.
Good night!
Good evening all. Thanks for the travel vibes, I arrived safely with no problems.
Tonight was fun. I blew off the first night of reunion stuff to hang out with a family friend who is in town from Palm Springs and with my family. It was a very nice relaxing evening and I'm really glad I decided to go this route. Not sure what I'm doing in the morning. If I wake up early enough I'll go to the "Run for the Cob" that's a part of Corn Days. I'm not going to stress about it, though and if I'm not up that early, I won't do it.
Right now I'm about to go to sleep. Phoebe the cat is sleepiing with me. She's a sweetie.
So...
I managed to get down to Pike Street in plenty of time to catch my 3:00 bus down to Richmond. That was good.
Then it turned out that my 3:00 bus left at 2:56. That was also good. However, as we drove through the next intersection, I noticed a man with some luggage standing off to the side of the road, looking at the bus, and holding up three fingers, with a question mark in his face. Not good for him, I guess.
Then we pulled up by Penn Station for the midtown pick-up. And that's when the fun began.
There were plenty of people waiting on the sidewalk, many more people than could fit on the bus. The driver even radio'd for another bus to come before she finished pulling into the space. After letting some people on the bus, and telling a whole slew of others to wait for the next one, we began our trip...
We traveled two blocks and stopped. For a while. Then another block. Then another half block. Then we finally entered the Lincoln Tunnel. The journey from Penn Station to the Jersey side of the Lincoln Tunnel, took about an hour. Normally, that should have taken about ten minutes. Then came the traffic on the NJ Turnpike. A Friday rush hour, coupled with a rain storm, and a few accidents, well... My bus should have pulled into Richmond around 10:00. Instead I arrived in Richmond around 11:40.
Thankfully, we had a good driver, and there were some entertaining and not too chatty folks on the bus. But, boy, was I glad when we finally arrived at Boulevard and Broad. Freedom! ;)
-
DR FJL - OY VEY!!
-But I mean that in a very good way... vey. ;)
*And good to see that you and Julie had a wonderful time in Pittsburgh, and made it back to NYC safe and sound.
DR elmore - FYI: I'll be back late Sunday afternoon. Hope you get some good sleep between now and then.
~~~~~VIBES TO THOSE IN NEED~~~~~

And since I don't want to sleep through my day here in Richmond tomorrow...
Goodnight.

Neil Hefti was very good friends with the brother of my first piano teacher. This guy, IIRC, was head of the Vocal Department at University of Omaha or Nebraska, or whatever it's called. He gave me an informal voice lesson when I was about 14 or 15 and told me I had one of the most naturally resonant voices he had ever heard, which was a big confidence booster for me, since I had been so focused on playing the piano up until then.
-
My Dad took all of us to see HOW TO MURDER YOUR WIFE when I was very young. He had seen it on a business trip and loved it. The only other movie I remember that happening on was THE PINK PANTHER. I believe we saw both of these at drive-ins.
-
Back from Grant's - we have entered all the fixes, and now I'll print out one more copy of the final, give it a once-over, and then it will be sent to the publisher on Monday morning. Whew! We went to the Hamlet and had nachos afterwards. I'd eaten appetizers for lunch from the Studio Cafe - guacamole, popcorn chicken, and wings, split with a pal. So, I feel a little gross right now. I'll go write the notes and then watch Lord Love A Duck - she of the Evil Eye will be here in the morning.
