In my half day I still have to have my performance evaluation!?! It should have happened by now or been postponed until January.

I also have to finish prepping a document for a presentation that I'm NOT making since I will be out of the office. I'm going to more trouble than I have to but the presentation is important and the person chosen to replace me does not inspire confidence.

But then at 11:30 I'm going home and then we will take a train to Long Island for the weekend.

Technically, Anthony's address is still Long Island and he got a notice for Jury Duty starting Friday November 27th but it's one of  those call in things where you call the first day to see if you're needed then call again on Monday to see if you're needed, etc. He hopes to be home by the middle of next week.

Good morning, all! The Institute came through and there's a nice deposit of cash in my bank account this morning. I am very happy to see its arrival and I am devastated by the news of DR Jane's injuries. Thank you, DR PennyO, for the news. I think we're all counting on you to be the relayer of any new information on Nursie's status. I sent her an email, but I have no idea how soon she will see it, so I hope our beautiful PennyO will send Nursie our wishes and sympathy.

No one tells me nothing! I learned of the FINIAN'S RAINBOW release this morning from Divarobbie's notice to Castrecl. Still, I am very happy it's happening, and very relieved that the original recording plans changed to PS Classics. During the previews, another producer was seen schmoozing up the producers regularly at the performances.

BK, Excellent news! I'm happy that your Holy Grail plans are faling into place and I look forward to learning what the soundtrack may be.

This morning, a trip downtown to Toyland, then to Rodgers & Hammerstein. After that, I will drop off the score I did yesterday to the producer of the concert it's for and make a stop at Juilliard to pick up the Finale 2010. So, I'm outa here for now. I'll check in from Toyland.

And for a great success for MR BK's release next week.

And for DR BEN on his last 1/2 day before vacation!

Anyhoo...

I got the one load of laundry I needed to get done into the washer and then into the dryer earlier this morning, so that I could have clean socks and t-shirts for my trip down to Virginia later on today.

Otherwise, I'll be heading down to Chelsea shortly for one of those required singers calls thingies.  We're seeing Women at 10:00, and Men at 2:00.  I have a feeling - well, I hope - that we'll have a short morning, a long lunch break, and an even shorter afternoon.  We shall see.  -I think we're the only show having auditions today in the city - at least no other Equity notices came up for today on the casting site.  -Nevemind, I just checked, and American Idiot will be holding auditions today too.  Hmm...

This is the last night of November ratings sweeps, so be prepared for some shows to go into reruns (or simply missing from the schedule) starting tomorrow. It won't be all reruns for the rest of the year; shows will air a new episode every now and then, but nothing consistently weekly until 2010.

Cripes! I just got an email whining about the length of time to release the recording of FINIAN'S RAINBOW as compared to the good old days when big corporations like RCA or Columbia could get them out in a week. Well, given the past two months it's-on-it's-off situation, raising the money to do the recording, and getting a label and producer took its time. Is PS Classics a big multimillion dollar company with the budget and employees to bring this thing out in a week? Oy!

I think it's too bad we lost holiday sales but I hope the album's a big success.

Greetings from Toyland!

Oy--today is the first of the house inspections.  Pray for Rosemary's septic tank.  :)

I am going crazy trying to figure out how to export my favorites from MSN to another browser.  Of course MSN is not compatible with importing to IE.  That makes perfect sense, doesn't it, Mr. Gates?  There's evidently an "easy" way to export them to Windows Live and then to another browser, all dependent on utilizing Windows Live's "Import" feature.  Except Windows Live does not have an "Import" feature.  Oy.

DR Elmore--sheesh!  Tell whoever e-mailed you that back in the "good old days", cast recordings would generally not come out until months after a show opened.  Having a recording be available within a short time span has only been a recent phenom (probably starting with THE PRODUCERS?)

But I can sympathize --I can't wait for the FINIAN'S RAINBOW cast recording!  Will you be there at the session?

Actually, DR Dan(the Man), Columbia and RCA could grind them out in a week in the heydays of MY FAIR LADY, CAMELOT, etc.

I had a big day in San Francisco yesterday.   I went to the de Young Museum to see the Tutankhamun exhibit.

It was splendiferous, with relics from many different pharaonic dynasties on display, all leading up to the Tut room.  They didn't have the funerary mask that was on the mummy, sad to say, but I guess Egypt simply doesn't want to disappoint its own thriving tourist trade.  We did have all the jewels that were on the mummy including a crown, flail and crook and knife.  There were some amazing things done with extraordinary detail.  And these were all three thousand years old.

Remind me to ask TCB how they did it.  ;)

Re the Finians recording - I asked Kevin Spirtas to put our name in the hat ages ago - I knew the producers of the show would have to raise the money for the recording - well, they obviously never even considered us, which is a real shame because if anyone had asked me at any time, I could have told them I'd have it out two weeks after it was recorded, just like I had King and I out that fast and several others.  Oh, well.  I wish all luck on the recording, though.

The opera last night was wonderful.  Well, Suor Angelica was wonderful.  Pagliacci not as much, but still enjoyable.  And it was my first time at the Miami Arts Center, so it was great to check out a new (to me) venue.

The day started out today very rainy and stormy, with a rather impressive lightning display.  It looks to be clearing up a bit now.  So hopefully, my neices, brother and sister-in-law will not experience too many additional weather related delays on their flight down here from Boston later this afternoon.

Later, I will help my mom get a head start on some of tomorrow's side dishes.

My question for ASK BK day - which actor in films now or then, do you think is most adept at playing both comedy and drama?

Alec Guinness  (Mouse That Roared/Bridge On the River Kwai)

William Holden – (Born Yesterday/Stalag 17)

Well, I spoke with Keith - Jane went into surgery at 8 this morning. She was in a positive (what else??) frame of mind. There is no way to know how long it will take, as they have to be in there before they know what they'll do to repair our girl. Her fairly severe osteoporosis must have played a part - but the force and location of the impact would have felled larger, stronger people. Oy, vey...

Keith sounded his strong, stoic self - but i could hear how distressed and helpless he is. He has always been her protector, and his hands are tied right now. Keith's waiting for the surgeon and I'm waiting for Keith. I'll certainly let y'all know whatever I learn, as soon as I learn it.

Keep the faith...

The producer who needed his "last minute" rewrite just called whining about the fact that I'd scored the entire number when he only wanted me to score the 16 new bars and then attach it to the middle of the old arrangement he has, God forbid that they are vastly different in feel and size. I am pissed because of several reasons:
  1. that was not clear to me
  2. I hate having little to no time to think about a major rethinking of a number and this was the case
  3. I wasted a day of my life that I will prbably not be paid for now

I doubt I'll be working for him again.

Oy--today is the first of the house inspections.  Pray for Rosemary's septic tank.  :)

Rosemary's septic tank seems to have a top price of $10K; Rosemary's Olympic Bath however could flush a good deal more down the drain (if the drain works, that is)

Don't thank me - thank the friendly critters.

In your honor I went out side and petted a very friendly kitty. A neighbor was taking his Jack Russel for a stroll and his three cats came along for the walk: a gorgeous lilac point Siamese Momma with two offspring, one like Momma and the other a darling gray tabby. I was amazed that the cats didn't stray far, and came when called.

Before I left for lunch, I had time to watch last night's NCIS: LA. As I suspected, Barrett Foa's character has a crush on Pauley's Abby.

The show was pretty intense and had some good lines last night. I enjoyed the show more than I have in the last month or so. Good job all around.

When I got in from lunch, I put on A CHARLIE BROWN THANKSGIVING to start getting in the mood and also to give me 25 minutes or so to decide what else I wanted to watch.

I had forgotten that the original DVD of this Peanuts special doesn't look all that great. The others look much better than this, even though it was made in 1973 and the other classics were produced quite a few years before.

I finally settled on SAY IT WITH SONGS, Al Jolson's third movie. I've seen THE JAZZ SINGER many times and also THE SINGING FOOL many times on laserdisc from that Al Jolson laserdisc box set, but I had only watched SAY IT WITH SONGS once before on laser.

The Warner Archive release is the same transfer as the laserdisc. Still, it's more convenient to watch than the laser since there is no side break. The movie only runs 86 minutes.

Funny thing about this one. It's actually Al's first all-talkie (the two previous ones had silent sequences in them), and he sings a good bit, but not one of the songs became one of his evergreen standards. You can tell that they wanted "Little Pal" to become as big a hit as "Sonny Boy," but I guess it didn't really catch on.

Al looks the best in this movie than he does in any of his other starring vehicles, and he doesn't do any blackface numbers either.

Good news:  house is inspected

Bad news:  lots of things need attending to

Good news:  most of those things are going to be the bank-owner's responsibility, as the house is not fundable (meaning loan-worthy) if they're not fixed

Bad news:  more inspections (pool, septic, HVAC) still to come

Good news:  Bank is paying to fill two oil tanks so that both (count 'em) oil furnaces can be tested

Bad news:  evidently there was also an older boiler heating system with circulated water and individual thermostats in each of the rooms that has been largely dismantled.

Glad the Jane reports came through - Keith e-mailed me several times today so I knew it had gone well, thank goodness.  I just didn't have a second to post before now, for the reasons you might imagine.  A three-hour productive work session, and then I addressed all the packages, did the postage, filled out about half the overseas packages' customs form and attached them, and got everything, including my big dealer order out.  I have about twelve overseas packages left to fill out forms for and then I'll take all those with two more dealer orders over to the postal office later tonight.  Then, it will just be the handful of dealers when they pay.  I barely had time to wolf down a sandwich, but I think I can finally relax a little before I fill out the rest of the forms.

Ok - I just spoke to our Jane... she kept slamming the button on the morphine machine, but she was able to talk to me. She said the worst part was that she was having a terrible nightmare and couldn't wake up - and then realized THIS was the nightmare. She is also feeling very weird about having an artificial shoulder. I gave her everyone's wonderful healing thoughts and good wishes - for which she is enormously grateful. Keep the love flowing her direction - the next several days are going to be very hard.

They don't call me tenacious-J for nothin' department:  OK, so here was my fascinating afternoon of phone calling.  The inspection report said to check with DEQ to see if there were any reports of underground oil tanks on the property.  Called DEQ, and there was indeed a file, but it was empty.  The lady said that probably meant a report had come in that there was an underground tank, but that it had not been decommissioned.  She did, though, have the name of the owner of the property at that time (2004), and it matched in ethnicity what we had been told by the neighbors I spoke with.  So, anyhoo, I Googled the name and came up with the same surname in Hillsboro and called.  I got an extremely ancient, though incredibly sweet, Greek woman named Angela who confirmed that her son had indeed owned the home and she had lived there, too.  She was crestfallen to hear what bad shape it was in, but she was a wealth of information about various aspects of the house.  Her son is due back in town Monday and she said she and he would meet me at the property to answer any questions I have.  This is a G-dsend, as we have been flying blind since the house is in foreclosure and the bank has no info on anything.

Oy, I just Googled the owner's name and it turns out he was involved in a really messy and well publicized lawsuit involving a Portland Police offcier.  Embezzlement, theft, all sorts of scary stuff.  And that's just the police officer.  :)

That's great news about the Finian's recording!

Here's to a speedy recovery for DR Jane.

Maybe you're buying the West Coast Amityville Horror?

Howdy, DR KevinH!

I just read that the USA network has renewed PSYCH and BURN NOTICE for another season each. Great news! (I would have been shocked if BURN NOTICE hadn't been renewed. Week in and week out, it was USA's most popular show this summer.)

Hoo and Ray!  I love "Psych"!!

Congrats on the Finian's Rainbow recording. Perhaps it will be a "compete" recording.

I see that Home Theater Forum is looking for reviewers. Do you have any interest in writing for them? I think you won't tow the company line and will be a kick in the pants that they need. I hardly ever read a review that isn't glowing. I know you will tell the truth.

They're not interested in me to post there, let alone review for them.  I wouldn't want to anyway, and no, I would never toe the company line and would always tell it like it is - just as I did when I posted there.  Robert Harris has been trying to get me reinstated there because he knows I'm good for the place, but to no avail so far, which is a little shocking.

I had a very unusual set of programs on the viewing schedule tonight.

I began with SUMMER STOCK. I hadn't watched it in a while, and it was good to see it again. It's a quite wonderful SD transfer, and it's a very entertaining movie.

Next I plucked PLANET EARTH off the shelf and watched "Jungles" which, like all of those episodes, is quite fascinating. And the HD is simply breathtaking.

I finished watching the rest of AS THE WORLD TURNS. Noah became a little more agreeable, but that may have simply been to get with the mood of the holiday episode and that the next time we see him, he'll be an ass again. We'll see.

And I concluded the evening with tonight's GLEE. I still hate the fake pregnancy storyline, but thankfully, there were enough numbers in the episode to wash partially the bitter thoughts of that subplot out of my brain. And "True Colors" was a lovely way to finish the episode.

I'm trying to watch a motion picture on Blu and Ray but I keep dozing off - what an exhausting day.  I still have to drive packages over to the post office, too.

REALLY Bad News:  just did a check, and there is no DSL or other high speed internet available out there.

Which means I may have to stop posting on HHW.

Which is really GOOD news for all of you.  :)

What about through Direct tv or other satellite

I read the reviews of the films that I am interested in and of course yours. I have been disappointed in some of the dvds I have gotten after reading the reviews

Well, my sister and her husband arrived from Michigan this afternoon and are all tucked in at Mom's.  Their daughter has arrived from Illinois and is making herself comfortable in our guest room.  So, I guess tomorrow really is Thanksgiving and we're havin' a party!

Richard and I will put the turkey in the oven in time for me to see the hour of Broadway performances that precedes the Macy's parade.  Then, Laura (my niece) and I will get the table ready and I'll put green beans & ham on to simmer.

I think I better go to bed now - 'night!

So, I'm catching up on CD listening.  Tomorrow I go back to every day jogging - I think I've put on about eight pounds in the last two weeks - not from overeating or anything, but from complete lack of exercise four or five days a week.  I will remove the eight pounds within two weeks, in time for my birthday.

Extremely disturbing news--just as my realtor was leaving with signed papers yesterday, we heard an ambulance and then a firetruck, which zoomed down my street and stopped at my neighbor's.  We soon heard she was dead.  She had a beautiful Golden Retriever named Bodhi.  Betsy knew her quite well because she was a Public Defender and Betsy was Exec Dir of Oregon Women Lawyers for a few years.  We had heard rumblings about this almost immediately, but today the police presence just exploded, and the entire scene is now cordoned off as a crime scene and this article has just popped up on the online Oregonian:

No, this is where we live now, the house you've been to.  A beautiful, quiet, well to do neighborhood.  We're a little freaked out, actually.

In fact I think we talked about her and the other FPD who lives on the other side of our house when you were here, Pat Ehlers.  It seems to me you thought you knew him.

i do remember that. You live in a very nice quiet area. One of the news reports said it's a homocide.  That's really got to be creepy. Make sure you lock your doors!

We do keep our doors locked most of the time, though Betsy is pretty lax.  I have been snarking about it for years, but I think this might be enough to convince her.
