Post by: bk on December 11, 2009, 12:26:04 AM
Well, you've read the notes, the notes were yummilicous, and now it is time for you to post until the cows come home - they're currently annoyed that there is no Roscoe's Cows and Waffles.

I was watching episodes of Bat Masterson last night.  DR MBARNUM sent them to me and they arrived yesterday.  I watched four of them.....three featured Miss Allison Hayes as romantic interest Ellie Winters....and two of them featured Miss Leslie Parrish.  In one she was a bad girl and in the other a not so bad girl.

Here is a picture of our tree this year along with a shot of our visitors from Northern Ireland. They came to the apartment yesterday after a day of sightseeing. We had tea and a wonderful chat. It was a great way to unwind after a  long day of bag packing.

And here is another shot. This is inside the Lounge at Actors' Equity. Our friends came uptstairs to see us before they began their day of sightseeing.

Good morning, all! I realized I have an opera performance tonight, Faure's PENELOPE at Manhattan School of Music, so tonight I'm stepping out, whether I want to or not. Actually, I prefer not since I am also out tomorrow night for Kevin Spirtas' play and Brent's show on Sunday. However, when one of your best friends is director of the Opera Dept and you fear for your life, you go. And I am a bit curious about it; it's another version of Ulysses' return to Ithaca after the Trojan War and killing off Penelope's suitors.

As for today, I have to finish Moross' SHARKFIGHTERS score and get it into the post to the copyist and, at some point - I think 12:30 - I have physical therapy. I need to call there and verify the time. I also have some final Christmas gift things I need to accomplish once I balance my checkbook.

TOD:
DVD: two Netflix disks are sitting here; I think one's a Gerald Butler comedy but i can't remember the title
CD: Musick for the Royal Fireworks, Guy Haines, Liz Callaway, Christmas Mornings, Ceremony of Carols
VCR: Extreme Narcissists in Compromising Positions

DR singdaw, I remember reading A SINGLE MAN in college, and it's a really beautiful novel, perhaps my favorite Isherwood book. I am curious to see how the film adaptation works.

DR Ben, I think you should give  your apartment the name of Toyland! It looks wonderful.

Today I will come to the end of the marathon Mel Brooks movie mash I've been experiencing these last four days. Seeing all of these films back-to-back make it so clear how much he enjoyed working with the same people over and over. Once you break into his circle of comic cronies, he uses you somewhere in everything.

CBS has a new animated special at 8 (YES, VIRGINIA), but the rest of their Friday schedule is comprised of reruns. MEDIUM's is the season premiere episode.

Happy B-day to Ginny!

BK, I can't believe that you and I never did the Roscoe's Chicken and Waffle experience together, given all our other dining experiences from Musso and Frank, The Smokehouse, Bird's, Langer's, The House of Pies, Schwab's...How did we miss this one?  Despite it's proximity to where I lived, I only actually went a few times, but every time I went, it was dee-licious!

So...

I've been reading up on the causes and symptoms of kidney stones and kidney infections, and it was quite interesting to read that depending on the type of infection you have, the dietary guidelines are basically at polar opposites.

Anyhoo...

It's also been quite interesting watching some of the recent interviews with Tom Ford.  You can - well, I can really tell that the whole directing experience has changed him. He's so calm now, and not so in-your-face.  However, he's still very handsome (and smolderingly hot). ;)

Just did a computer update - something to do with improved Java.  I restarted, as requested, opened a few programs and tried to print an e-mail - printer wouldn't open, wasn't being recognized, spinning wheel when I tried to open iTunes - called Apple, they told me to restart again, and then everything was fine.  Something to do with the update not installing fully until the second restart.  Unbelievable, but I'm not the only one who's had the problem.

of course he is not in london, he is home job hunting and if that had happened he would have called home collect.  while i was talking to craig, keith's cousin called to let us know she also received an email.  she said a friend's account was also hacked and sadly the friend's elderly grandmother sent money.

the gmail account hacked was the one craig uses for job applications so very few personal family or friends have it.

We have a new guilty tv pleasure which has partially supplanted HOARDERS.  WORLD'S STRICTEST PARENTS is especially fun for me because it features so many Mormon parents laying down the "be reverent" law.  ;)  I told Betsy I won't be satisfied until there's a WORLD'S STRICTEST HOARDERS.

Looks like both Memphis and the Night Music revival will be getting cast recordings.

I'd read (http://www.playbill.com/news/article/135208-Broadways-Memphis-Lives-on-CD-Beginning-Dec.-11) that the cast recording for Memphis can already be ordered from their website (http://www.memphisthemusical.com/), but I didn't know about ALNM. :D

phone was stolen at GUN POINT, it's  such a crazy experience for me, i
need help flying back home,  the authorities are not being 100%

have enough money to get my flight ticket back home and l need to
clear the hotel bills here , please i need you to loan me some money,
will refund you as soon as I'm back home, i promise.Get back to  me
ASAP let me know what to do next.

Craig

of course he is not in london, he is home job hunting and if that had happened he would have called home collect.  while i was talking to craig, keith's cousin called to let us know she also received an email.  she said a friend's account was also hacked and sadly the friend's elderly grandmother sent money.

the gmail account hacked was the one craig uses for job applications so very few personal family or friends have it.

I'd read that this is the latest scam going around...and sadly, some people are falling for it. :-\

The scams never cease. I got an e-mail from "Sprint" the other day insisting that my account was out of order and that unless I contacted them at a certain e-mail address, my service would be immediately disconnected. It went right into the spam folder.

I watched THE MENTALIST while I ate lunch today. A very enjoyable episode. I love when Patrick puts snobbish, entitled people in their places. Not a difficult mystery to solve, but it was entertaining watching the rich get manipulated.

Then I watched TO BE OR NOT TO BE. It's an OK remake. Blu-ray really makes all the soft focus shots of Anne Bancroft seem obvious and disconcerting, but the rest of it looked just fine in HD. The DTS-HD MA 5.1 track was a nice step up from Dolby Surround, too. That's also on the disc, and I listened to a sequence or two using it, and it's so PUNY compared to the DTS-HD  track.

The film has always seemed to me to be longer than it actually is. The pacing is fairly leaden which I felt when I first saw it and definitely still feel that way.

I watched all the bonus features. There was one new to Blu-ray featurette, but the others were EPK vignettes done at the time of filming. There's another trivia track, the isolated score track, and trailers.

So, that leaves me with ROBIN HOOD: MEN IN TIGHTS tonight. (My memories of this are not too positive. Maybe a revisit will find me more receptive.)

SPACEBALLS is the same disc as the one I reviewed a few months ago, so I won't have to rewatch that.

I had a swell birthday yesterday. First went to our office Christmas lunch/gift exchange which was lots of fun...then drove up to Portland to pick up my friend Mark and we toodled around Portland for a few hours then had our Scandinavian dinner which was delish! I forgot my camera, so no pictures, but I had Swedish Meatballs with lingonberry sauce and gravletx (sp) which was chunks of salmon, grapefruit, and avacodo. Yummy!

Mark also had the meatballs, but had pickled vegies as well.

After dinner we called up our friend Terry, who was unaware that Mark was even in town, and we met him at Scandals, which is a "special interest" bar/lounge. I had a scotch on the rocks and a cup of coffee, Mark had a Bloody Mary, and Terry had one of everything, and was still their when we left.

I got home around midnight, slept in and have been running errands all morning.

In the CD player: Various Carols for a Cure, Barbara Cook's Christmas CD and Mel Torme's Christmas album.
In the DVD player: A stack of choices with an episode of "Foyle's War" on top, a couple of Robert Altman goodies ("Secret Honor," "Kansas City") and "8 1/2" just because of "Nine."
In the VCR: Still re-running "Sun Valley Serenade" as Christmas nears.

And send along a Merry Christmas to Karen Morrow. Still love hearing her version of "Baby, It's Cold Outside" with Charles Nelson Reilly.

Today was one of those seasonal days where I went out Christmas shopping for hours and hours but wound up bringing home next to nothing.  It was pretty much my own fault--I was ill-prepared with not much of a list, I was indicisive about a number of items and just plain crabby because I was wearing my heavy winter jacket on top of a flannel shirt and felt hot in every store.  Ah, well...there's still 13 days left--plenty of time to do my Christmas shopping.

I did get my "Yes, Virginia" Macy's gift card today, but nothing extra for it also being my birthday.  Went directly to the Bobbi Brown cosmetic counter to spend it and the clerk was thrilled that I was her "first Virginia" of the day.  When I told her it was my birthday, she gave me some samples packets of their face cream that I like so much.

We then explored the new Nordstrom and Vera Bradley stores, with, of course, a stop in the Apple store.  Didn't buy anything at any of those places, but had fun looking.

In my CD player right now:  A Christmas Carol and A Child Is Born (http://www.kritzerland.com/carol.htm), with music by Bernard Herrmann.

I wish I could figure out what I did with my copy of this CD.  I have been looking everywhere for it.

Greetings. Back from another day of packing. We had a short day. We were actually done by 1:30 and we were home by 2:00. I then did the laundry while Anthony did some errands.

His father's shoehorn broke and it seems that the only two people in the world who use a shoehorn are Anthony's father and me. He has been looking for a shoehorn to get his father for Christmas. We went to shoe stores, men's clothing stores and other places but couldn't find anything (Anthony wants the long kind, not the short). Well, we finally found this place:

Manhattan Wardrobe Supply (http://www.wardrobesupplies.com/store/m2_shoehorn.html)

on 29th Street. They have just what Anthony was looking for so he bought two. Now his father can have one shoehorn in the bedroom and another in the television room (where he often leaves his shoes when he puts his feet up on the couch). Mission accomplished. He then went to Bed, Bath and Beyond and bought one of those electronic counting jars. It has a lid with an electronic sensor which counts the change when you drop it in:

Coin Counter (http://www.bedbathandbeyond.com/product.asp?order_num=-1&SKU=120774)

We got home around the same time, had some dinner and watched some Family Feud. I then laid down for a nap at 6pm and got up at 7pm. I didn't want to go to bed then because I would probably then be up at 4:30 and I don't want to get up at 4:30 on Saturday morning. Anthony laid down at 6:30 and is still sleeping. It's 8:15 now and I will probably go to bed soon since it's been a long (but productive and fulfilling week).

No pictures to post but maybe I'll have more next week.

We continue working on Monday. We have a holiday party tomorrow afternoon and one on Sunday as well so it will be a festive weekend for us.

Don't we all!        ;)

My DH and I are also big proponents of shoe horns.  We found an online supplier of long plastic ones, and we have them strategically placed all around the house.

I spent much of the day at the dentist. Apparently, her evaluation last week was a bit too conservative; today she added replacing an old crown to our list. I believe it was on the expensive dentist's list, too. But my bill should still be considerably less than the original quote.

ben, keith decided to use his shoehorns on the trip to chicago-BIG MISTAKE.  the shape looked suspicious in the x-ray machine and no one knew what thy were.  of course his luggage was hand checked.  not to deal with the problem on the way home he left the shoehorns in the hotel.  such a shame.  he would have checked the suitcase if it didn't cost so much.

Well, I got the last of the Mel Brooks movies watched: ROBIN HOOD: MEN IN TIGHTS. It has a simply wonderful cast but all doing such tired, rehashed material (Mel even resorts to repeating his "It's good to be the king" joke here) that it's just not much fun. Of course, Cary Elwes is ALWAYS a pleasure to watch, and Roger Rees plays silly-evil wonderfully well. Not quite sure what Richard Lewis is doing in the movie, and the great Tracey Ullman is completely wasted. Dom DeLuise channeling Brando's Godfather is hilarious, even if the character makes no sense in a Robin Hood movie.

I did have time to watch one program for fun, last night's 30 ROCK which featured Cheyenne Jackson doing some beautiful singing and some lousy singing (on purpose). Pretty fun. The scenes he wasn't a part of weren't all that interesting (though it was nice seeing Julianne Moore doing a Boston accent and playing comfortably with Alec Baldwin.)

Back from PENELOPE. I don't think Faure was a very good opera composer and, while I believe some pieces that fall from favor need to be re-examined, I don't think this is one of them. I spent most of the time admiring the orchestration but i really disliked the scenery, costumes and direction. Makes me want to reread the Odyssey, though, and see the old Kirk Douglas film ULYSSES, which I loved as a kid. Kirk Douglas, because of this film and 20,000 LEAGUES UNDER THE SEA, was my idea at the age of 10 of what a movie hero should be.

So, time for some gin and tonic. Mikey, call BK, you oaf!

I am ticked off at the local cable company.  I'm trying to get cable in my new office because they are far cheaper than dish or directtv for the basic waiting room channels.  They keep saying someone will get back to me and no one has.  Today I found out the last time they installed cable in our building the installers broke a water pipe and caused a lot of damage.  So, I'm afraid that they don't want to come because of the building I'm in. I'm going to go down there and find out what's going on.  I'll do Dish if I have to, I have been told I can put it ont the roof of the building, but it's more expensive....oh bother

Yes that was Jeff Harnar.

And yes it was a wonderful evening of cabaret.

Jeff performed his Sammy Cahn show.

He is one of my favorite singers. He loves what he does and it shows. I can watch him again and again.

Afterward Alex Ryback got together.

We caught up on what was happening in our lives and talk about other people we knew from Roberta Peters to Davis Gaines. A most enjoyable night.
