We don't have a Blu-Ray Player and don't plan on getting one. We don't have a large screen, flat screen, LCD or plasma television and don't plan on getting one. We don't have cable anymore since June 12 (we do have a digital converter box and rabbit ears) and don't plan on re-subscribing anytime during my lifetime. We don't have an e-Book reader or a Kindle and don't plan on getting one. We don't have an mp3 player or an i-pod and don't plan on getting one. If I put on a CD I want to listen to it, I don't want one song from Column A and one song from Column Q and then a song from Column B, etc. I know you don't have to shuffle through your music on a player but it's not worth the effort (for me) to load my CDs on to my computer and then load them onto a media player just to have music as I walk down the street. In the time that takes I could listen to a CD! Plus, I can listen to my beloved BBC on the computer at work or at home anytime I want.

We do have a CD player, a computer, high-speed Internet service and e-mail addresses, a digital camera, a digital video camera, a record player and two pay as you go cell phones. We only bought into that idea last year right around this time. If Anthony had not gone to Wisconsin I doubt that we would have them. I got 1200 minutes on my cell phone along with a year of service. In the year that we have had the phones I still have 1065 minutes left. That shows you how much I use it. Yes, I could get a "plan" and pay $20 or $30 or $40 a month, but why bother (as Bette Midler said in a song or movie, I forget which). It's the reason we canceled cable television. We don't watch it enough to justify even $25 a month. I don't want to pay $20 a month for something I'm not going to use.

In spite of all this I feel completely with it and happening. I am totally technologically literate and comfortable with the technology that surrounds me, I just don't need to immerse myself in all aspects of it.

Thus ends Curmudgeon News Update ;)

I have to be truly convinced of the value of new technology and avoid trends at all costs.

First Record Player:  I still own and use my first personally owned turntable.  When I graduated from high school, my parents took me to Wall To Wall Sound to pick out the components of a new stereo system for a gift.  Aside from getting a Pioneer receiver and speakers, I also chose what was then the latest, greatest and nifty turntable on which you could place a stack of albums and be able to program or select any of the tracks (that were on the top side of the LP.)  Unfortunately, this item turned out to be a gimmick and the novelty soon gave way to the overall flaws of the turntable:  it was cheaply made and delivered crappy sound.  I packaged the thing up and exchanged it for what was then the top-of-the-line Pioneer state-of-the-art (remember that term?) turntable.  It was and continues to be a sturdy piece of machinery that still plays incredibly well.

First CD Player:  Pioneer, again, bought in 1986.  I was working at Strawbridge and Clothier and saw it was on sale and brought it home without any CDs to play on it. That weekend I bought Peter Gabriel's SO and the OCR of THE MYSTERY OF EDWIN DROOD.  DROOD was great fun because you could program the different endings of the musical.

First VCR:  Panasonic, right after the New Year in 1984.  I bought it for the sole purpose of taping the PBS broadcast of the RSC NICHOLAS NICKLEBY mini-series.  It lasted me for years.

Never got a LaserDisc player.

First DVD player:  Sony, again right after the New Year in 2000.  I had gotten a number of DVDs for Christmas--people had thought that I already had a player.  First DVD I played was SHAKESPEARE IN LOVE.

First portable "walkman"-like music player:  For Christmas in 1982, my sister gave me a Toshiba cassette player/recorder.  It was the size of a thick paperback.  To play the AM/FM radio, you had to snap in a module into the cassette player.  It was pretty heavy but it could take a beating--I dropped it tons of times and it kept on playing.

First portable CD player:  Sony--thick black heavy box that ate batteries.  Fragile and not practical at all...

First Mp3 player:  A little gadget from Sensory Science--it was 512K and could hold about 2 albums worth of songs.  It also had a built-in FM radio.  It served it's purpose.

First cell phone:  Another Christmas gift from another sister in 1996 or 97--Toshiba brick with an ironclad two-year contract with AT&T.  Couldn't wait till I got rid of it.

No Blu-Ray player, yet...I'll wait till I get an HD TV.

My arm started aching during the night, so around 4 a.m. I got up and started watching my work project for today since it's 3 1/2 hours long. I figured I'd watched about 30 minutes and start to drift off to sleep. Instead, I got hooked, and for two hours the time flew by. After I got the paper and ate my oatmeal, I lay down on the couch and slept for another 1 1/2 hours.

My work project is a film called JEANNE DIELMAN, and it's three days in the life of an "ordinary" woman, a widow with a teenaged son. It's a very stark film, covering her daily routine in rather mundane fashion, but the mundane becomes the mesmerizing as the days pass. I've watched the first two days, and I have the third one to go this afternoon.

Very different and hard to describe, but I'm enjoying it to my great surprise.

What's dull and routine to you might be fascinating to others. That's exactly the point with this movie. Because everything is routine and patterned, you have time to explore character traits. It's really quite a surprising movie but a female director I had never heard of.

Good morning, all! I have another trek to Toyland this morning for a meeting on the State of the Project, which will probably leave me in a State of Shock.

I slept poorly again last night, proving that a good night of sleep is not necessarily followed by another. I took no meds but the leg ached, I could not get comfortable, nothing went right. It wasn't fun. I did read a fascinating chapter on the creation of SIMON BOCCANEGRA in Julian Budden's definitive 3-volume tome The Operas pf Verdi before turning out the light. Between HARRY POTTER, THE CLOSER, and KATHY GRIFFIN I had an exciting night of viewing, so maybe that screwed up the sleeping pattern. Who can tell?

Time to head South to 27th Street.

In terms of video technology, I've been one of the "early adopters." I bought the first generation of videocasette recorders: the RCA Selectavision in the late 1970s.

I bought three laserdisc machines during their lifetime, all Pioneer brands.

I bought a DVD player within the first year of its national rollout. (It originally was only offered in six locales for the first six months, and Charlotte wasn't one of them). My first DVD player was a Panasonic.

I bought my first Blu-ray player within six months of its introduction: the Sony Playstation3. I have played only movies on it. I have never bought a single game for the device.

I am on my third widescreen HDTV. My first was a Toshiba 42." Then I got a JVC 52" and now have a Samsung 56".

And yet, I do not have an ipod or any kind of mp3 device. I listen to music the "old fashioned" way either by LP and CD player.

I bought my first home computer in 1984 - the Atari 800XL. I couldn't believe how much easier and more enjoyable writing became using a word processor instead of writing in a typewriter.

I'm not quite the Luddite Ben is, but close.   I do have flat screens and cable...though I just got rid of a Showtime, Cinemax, Starz, and the Movie Channel...because I never watch them.  I kept HBO for Bill Maher and Encore for the Westerns Channel.   I seem to be keeping various packages on the cable system (Warner) solely for one or two stations like TCM or BBCAmerica.   I wish you could make your own package, because of the huge swath of channels available, I only watch about five or six with any regularity, if that.

I don't have i-pods or any of that.  I don't really use shuffle features on CD players, or know half of what my cell phone does.  I will never, never read a book on a device like kindle.  Holding the book, flipping the pages, smelling it, seeing it sitting on a shelf, is part of the joy of owning a book.

We do have a DVD player. I forgot to mention that in my early morning missive.

It's brand new, purchased on Sunday from Best Buy. It's a combo unit playing both VHS tapes and DVDs (not DVD's). We still have tapes to view so we decided to get the Sony combo. I hope it lasts longer than the Panasonic we got 3.5 years ago.

If I could choose my own package I might go back to cable. As CP said, there is just a wide swath on the frequency that I don't watch.

I don't believe the cable companies when they say it would cost more or they couldn't do it. Of course they could do it and for a reasonable price, they just don't want to do it.

I've just finished reading today's column, and I have to say I'm chuckling a bit.

I mean, come on.....BK FINALLY moves into the 21st Century!  Who'd a thunk it??!!

I can't wait to read his reactions to HD TV....especially when the new TV season begins...or when "Lost" begins airing in January 2010.

Keep in mind, Bruce...just because you'll be getting HD channels does not ALWAYS mean the station will be showing a move in optimal HD forma.  Oh, it's almost always true.  But sometimes, someone falls asleep at the switch and the movie becomes a rectangle with a wide black frame.

And beware of everything TBS airs on its HD channel.  It may be an HD signal, but they don't generally bother to ensure the programming is anamorphic, meaning everything and everyone in all the programming is stretched out and just plain WRONG-looking.   Cannot fathom the mindset behind it, but there it is.

That said, this is not a common enough occurrence to be alarmed.  It's one of those things that will annoy you, and you should know in advance that it can happen.

TOD:

I don't jump into the new technology right away. I wait a bit to see how others feel about it and for the prices to go down.

I got my first CD player around 1991 or so, around the time that the cassette tape racks were being reduced and the CD racks had taken over.

I first had cable television in 1972 and have had it ever since. I now get around 500 or so channels and watch only about 3 or 4 of them, at most...TCM, Encore Westerns, CBS, ABC, NBC, and some brand new channel that just started called THIS, which is currently running old shows like SEA HUNT and THE PATTY DUKE SHOW.

Got my first computer in 1996 or 1997. Had dial up internet until a couple of years ago.

First digital camera...don't remember when I got that, but I love it.

I don't think I got a cordless phone until around 1996 or so.

Did not get a microwave until 1998.

I was also late to the table for LCD Wide Screen TV and cell phones. The cell phone does come in very handy at times and I LOVE my LCD tv.

I am all for new technology but like to wait and watch before jumping in. There are some things, like Iphones and what nots that I have not found a need for as yet

I have yet to get an MP3 player, although I would love to have one to  take to the gym.

I do still use a record player, but only because there are so many albums not yet on CD.

I rarely use my VHS machine and never play cassettes.

Still don't have a dish washer.

TOD:  I, too, bought an RCA Selectavision VCR, and it served me well for a few years.  It certainly had some snazzy features, and it's slo-mo feature was the best I've ever seen.

Unfortunately, I was also an investor in RCA's Capacitance Electronic Disc system.  It was going to be that or laserdisc, but I was assured by the salesman (whose commission would have been larger had I gone with laser) that the laser system was fraught with software problems...many laserdiscs were being returned because they would not play.

On the other hand, he told me, the new CED system (this was circa 1982) was selling and performing beautifully...AND, many titles were being issued on CED discs before being issued on laser, PLUS they were priced better on CED than they were on VHS tapes.

So....I paid my $300 and bought loads and loads of CED discs.  I had "Laura" before it was ever issued on laser or VHS.  I bought "Star Wars" when it was first issued...and it was at a very nice price.  I bought all the MGM musicals, "The Sound of Music" and "Ben-Hur" as they were issued.  Then came "South Pacific".  And on and on.  And I loved them.  They played very nicely.

And then CED died.  Miserably.   Even faster than Beta.  Of course, I invested in laser.  And just as things were going great guns and my colleciton was growing nicely, someone dreamed up DivX, or whatever it was....a disc that would give you limited rental plays.  The consumer could see a film three times but NOT own it.  Hollywood loved the idea.  Happily the public did not.  And then came the DVD...and...oh, well.

Flash forward to two years ago.  A high-def format war was underway.  HD DVD was affordable at the time and Blu-ray was not.  Warner Brothers was issuing on both formats.  Universal was exclusively HD-DVD.  Fox and Columbia were exclusively BD.  And then Paramount, which had been BD, switched sides and declared for HD-DVD.  And it all made perfect sense.  The quality was THE SAME, but the price tag was much lower for both player and discs.  Sales of both formats were sluggish.  WB was expected to make an announcement at a convention that would seal the deal for HD-DVD.  Before that happened, however, WB's chief HD-DVD proponent announced she was leaving the company but that everything was still on track.  And then the announcement that NO ONE expected...WB was throwing in exclusively with BD.

Happily, today, WB has been the one honorable studio in the whole brouhaha with its red2blu exchange program, giving those of us who bought its HD-DVD product the opportunity to swap it (figuratively) for the BD versions.  For a nominal fee and the cover art on the HD-DVD discs, WB would replace up to 25 discs.  I've gotten 24 replacements and feel somewhat happier about it.

My HD-DVD player is still a top-of-the line upconverting DVD player and my HD-DVDs continue to play beautifully, as well.

Still....it has left me somewhat bemused that the more expensive formats have tended to win out over the less expensive, but equally good formats.

I got my first turntable (as opposed to record player) somewhere in the late 1960s - not sure which brand I got, but it wasn't great.  I always wanted a Thorens turntable, but never got one.  I think the priciest turntable I owned was a very expensive Garrard.  It was fantastic.

I was one of the first to get a car phone that wasn't tied to the car - it needed nothing attached to the car at all, so one could use it in the car or out of the car.  This was back in 1989 or 1990, I think.

My first VCR was probably in the early 1980s - a Beta machine - I still have it and it still works.  After Beta died, I got a cheap VHS player.  I was a very early adopter with laserdiscs - one of the first Pioneer gaseous machines.  I remember marveling at how amazing Hatari looked - if you saw that original laserdisc today, you'd be shocked at how awful it is.

I did not want to go DVD and it took me a year to finally do so, at the end of 1998.  And I was not an early adopter with Blu-Ray and waited until the war was over, and even then I did not leap.  In fact, had I not been forced to buy a new TV, I probably still wouldn't have it - it came free with the TV.

I got an iPod a couple of years after they were introduced, I think.  Naturally, the salesman neglected to tell me that two weeks later a brand new version was coming, with color and more memory.  So, I had an already outmoded black and white iPod for two years.  I've actually never used it with headphones, and never take it out of the house.  It sits in a speaker dock next to the computer.  I do enjoy shuffle play sometimes, or I just use my playlists of complete albums.  However, I always listen to my new CDs straight through on the CD player, and I still have a turntable, which I use quite a lot.

My first widescreen TV was bought in 2000, I think.  It was a Mitsubishi rear projection TV - I loved it.  It was eventually replaced by a Mitsubishi DLP, and then that broke this year and was replaced by my current Samsung, which is amazing.

All the questions:

For example, when did you get your first record player and what kind was it? My dad bought one. I never did get permission to use it.

When did you get your first CD player? About 1997 - after we saw Forever Plaid, and Forever Plaid wasn't available on cassette.

Your first VCR? About 1984 - my son loved "Yo-Ko-Kio," so we rented it, then bought a copy for him. It was a Beta.

Your first laserdisc player (presuming you got one)? Never had one.

Your first DVD player? I never bought one, but my son had one here for a while hooked up to the old tv.

Your first mp3 player or iPod? I bought a cheap Ipod shuffle about a year ago.

Your first car phone? Never had one.

Your first cell phone? 2002 - just before DRs Sandra and Megan and I took a road trip. I was reluctant to drive on unknown freeways without one. Wouldn't give it up.

And your first Blu-Ray player and widescreen TV? Never had one.

TOD:

Record player - Got one for my 12th birthday.  It was a coral and white Silvertone from the Sears catalog - and it arrived in the mail!  I had one record - Johnny Mathis Sings Broadway, that my aunt had gotten by mistake from the Columbia Record Club and had given to us.  I had it for MANY MANY years, until I bought a nice STEREO with a drop down turntable and changing mechanism!!!

I never owned a laser disk player, beta player, or personal music player.

I bought a CD player in 1991, some off brand on sale at Target....it had a turntable and cassette player in it.

I bought a Panasonic color television set in 1970 that lastest for many years.  It was very nice.  Since then I have had many including Sylvania and Magnavox - my current LCD 36" HDTV is from Polaroid, on sale almost four years ago at WalMart.  It is very nice and I love HD programming.

I bought my first VCR in August of 1985, when I sold my first play - a Sylvania purchased at HH GREGG for about $249.  It had a remote that was attached by a wire.  I gave it to my brother when I bought a new one about 10 years later....it still works fine at his house and he uses it to transfer VHS tapes to his computer to make DVD's.

Have had a microwave for many years.....the first one my father kept referring to as a $700 bun warmer.

Today’s topic of discussion: How fast do you jump on the new electronic trends?
I try to take my time, but, there's always something, quite often a small thing, which makes me jump onto the latest electronics bandwagon. . .

When did you get your first record player and what kind was it?
I can't remember a time of NOT having a record player!  My folks had a console RCA stereo from the time they got married, and it moved with us in 1959 to where we've lived since then.
For probably my fourth or fifth birday or Chrismas I got one of those little suitcase type of record players.
I had an 8 track tape player by the time I was 10 (1966) - I know this because one of the first tapes I was given was the newly released soundtrack to DOCTOR ZHIVAGO.

When did you get your first CD player?
Here's one of those little things I mentioned earlier:  I bought my first cd player because of THE MYSTERY OF EDWIN DROOD.  That was the first cd I bought.  So that places that purchase in and around 1985 - it was a Pioneer.

Your first VCR?
I rented an RCA Betamax recorder, before actually purchasing an RCA vhs recorder.  Both were the big, lumbersome models, and even blank video tapes were quite expensive.  When I first got the recorders, there wasn't cable available in my area (gosh, that's almost inconceivable today!), but Photo Hut actually had a video rental service, and the sadly defunct Heads Together shop had an immense rental selection - from foreign films to porn.  The first real videotape I bought, I purchsed at Heads Together:  WHAT'S UP DOC? and it was priced very high.

Your first laserdisc player (presuming you got one)?
Another of those little things:  I bought a laserdisc player because of the widescreen release of INDIANA JONES AND THE LAST CRUSADE. So, my Pioneer, which I still have in working order (just not connected to anything) was purchased in 1990.

Your first DVD player?
Well, I had a dvd for about five months before I bought the dvd player, so it's another one of those little things that prompted the purchase:  LITTLE SHOP OF HORRORS, the Frank Oz film had been recalled almost as soon as it was released, but National Record Mart hadn't pulled theirs yet, so, I bought it.  1998 brought me my first dvd player, a Toshiba, which actually died only last year. .

Your first mp3 player or iPod?
With my income tax refund in 2008, I bought my IPod.  I take it with me while walking Dixie Bell, walking the mall and to bed with me, which is where I listen to audiobooks.

Your first car phone?
Never had one.

Your first cell phone?
2008, because Wal+Mart had a $9.99 sale on Tracfones.  It sits in the glove box of my car.  If I'm running late from work, or am going to the store after work, I'll use it to call home to see if I need to pick anything up.

And your first Blu-Ray player and widescreen TV?
I know that I've shared this before, but I bought a boxless Blu-Ray player (again from Wal*Mart) because it was marked 30% off.  Without a power cord, they dropped another $15.00 dollars off.  This was only a few months ago, that I acquired my Panasonic player.
My Panasonic HDTV (36 in) was bought in 2004 when Dad's lymphoma made in impractical for us to maintain our Myrtle Beach house.  My television, amongst other things, was bought with my share from the sale of the beach house.

T.O.D.

I am, for the most part, one of the last to get the new technology.

The first cellphone I got was about the size of a man's shoe, but unlike Maxwell Smart, it was not very cool.  It stayed in my car, under the seat, basically because there wasn't any other place to put it.  I bought it (and its two year contract) basically to have in the car for emergencies.

My first video camera weighed about fifty pounds and would have been better used on a move or TV set, than on vacation.  When I lugged it around, there was no other shopping allowed.

I bought my first TV, used, when I was fourteen.  I had worked at the racetrack selling sno-cones all summer, and I used the moneyt to a portable black and white TV.  The knobs were already falling off when I got it, so I had to keep a pair of pliers handy to change the channel.  Currently, I have two TVs (27"), neither one is a flat screen.  I have a DVD player in the bedroom and a VCR in the living room.

I bought my first computer in the srping of 1994.  Although late by most standards, I was about six months ahead of the huge surge that was Christmas 1994.  I was so pissed that all those newbies were keeping me from signing into AOL throughout Christmas Day.  I finally got high-speed internet about five years ago.

I got my first record player when I was about ten years old.  It was a little plastice portable, but it certainly gave me great service playing tons of OBC and movie soundtracks when I was a kid.

As for the Topic of the Day....

Quote
How fast do you jump on the new electronic trends? For example, when did you get your first record player and what kind was it?
My parents had a big console one too, but I believe they finally dumped it when we moved to Connecticut. They did buy a Panasonic (I think) system: receiver/cassette player, turntable, speakers.  -Which I eventually "took over". -I've always wondered exactly when my parents stopped listening to music, well, at least to records considering they had a nice LP collection.  But that's a discussion for another day.  In any case... That Panasonic (I think) system provided years of musical service. I finally gave it away during one of my college moves.

Quote
When did you get your first CD player?
My brother, Don, had a JVC model that he bought early on.  I eventually purchased a Sony 5-Disc Changer at Circuit City in 1986. It still works (I think), but it's currently in storage somewhere in my parents' house.

Quote
Your first VCR?
My Dad did but a BetaMax machine early on. However, the one machine I remember was the JVC model with the big colorful buttons and the top-loading mechanism.

Quote
Your first laserdisc player (presuming you got one)?

Quote
Your first DVD player?
I think it was a Philips model purchased sometime ???

Quote
Your first mp3 player or iPod?
My brother, Don, gave me an original iPod Shuffle (the stick of gum). I bought a 2nd Generation iPod Nano, it was one of the (RED) ones.  Alas, I left that one on a plane.  My brother then gave me another iPod, an 80GIG one.  I like it, but don't use it as much as most people think I would, should.

Your first car phone?

Your first cell phone?
Fall of 1999 - right before I went on tour for the first time.  In fact, I bought two of them.  I didn't want to run up long distance bills between me and Steve while I was bussing and trucking around the country.

My first record player I got for Christmas in the early 1950s.  It was pink and blue plastic.  It was a "kiddie's" player.

My next was a hi-fi I got in the early 60s for Christmas.

My first stereo I bought in the Navy in 1971 or so.  It was a portable unit with detachable speakers.  It met all my needs in my "barracks environment."

I also went the 8-track route.  Oh, my, yes.  M-o-o-n, that spells 8-track cassette deck.  I had three or four different ones over the years, all the way through 1977.  My mom still has a component unit that was mine back then.  I had a portable unit she and my dad left (along with my Italian wicker chairs) at their lake house when they sold the property in 1989. Sigh.

My first serious turntable was part of a component system I bought at the Army/Air Force Exchange in 1973.  I bought a Pioneer receiver and a Pioneer PL-50-A turntable...still a remarkably beautiful thing.  Sadly, it's impossible to find a belt for it, but as late as 1983, I was offered a bundle for it by a guy at a store that sold all sizes of turntable belts.  I can't even remember the speaker brand.  They weren't one of the big names, but they were highly rated and served me beautifully for more than a decade.  In fact, I'd still be using them had they not been stolen from my villa in Naples, Italy, in 1988.

In the late 1980s/early 1990s, I had a small Sony component system with turntable.  I just wasn't going to invest more money into equipment that could be gone when I came home from work.  This was, still, in Italy.

Since then, I have built a new system of various types of equipment, primarily Sony, but with a Pioneer CD burner and a Toshiba VHS-to-DVD recorder.  My turntable was made in Eastern Europe and has a glass belt-driven turntable.  It's quite interesting.

I never play cassettes any longer, but I have a cassette deck in my component system along with a Sony laserdisc player and a Sony 200-CD Carousel player.  Add to that my Sony BD player, my Toshiba HD-DVD player and my Panasonic plasma HDTV (37-inch) and the world is quite sweet.

I am really bad about brand names.  I just don't pay attention, or don't remember.  I assume my record player when I was a kid came from Sear's, as most of the stuff from my childhood did.  My mom being a single parent, female teacher in the 50s and 60s did not provide for a lot of luxury.

Interestly, I still remember that my used black and white TV was a Sylvannia; and I know the TV in the bedroom is a Magnavox.  Other than that I am pretty clueless.

My first CD player was a Sony portable that I bought in 1984 when I came to the Bay Area (from Indianapolis) to report to USS Carl Vinson (CVN-70).

I was here about three days before we pulled out to sea for reactor trials.  A month later, we were getting ready to participate in an exercise called RIMPAC (for nations that rim the Pacific) and I was in the Navy Exchange stocking up on stuff I thought I might enjoy having.  And there it was:  This portable player complete with a rechargeable battery pack.  I bought it and "one" (1) (count it, ONE) CD.   That's all there was of interest to me in a very small assortment of CDs.

Happily, at the end of the exercise we pulled into Pearl Harbor for four fun-filled days of R &R.  I took all four days off (leave, as it were), got a hotel room, and explored Waikiki.  Someone told me about a nice shopping center where there were a great number of good retail stores and so I boarded a bus and ventured out of Waikiki.

At this shopping center, I found a Sharper Image store.  Therein, they were selling a nifty pair of Bose Roommate speakers.   Ahah! I mentally exclaimed.  Something to make my portable CD player even better.  I bought those puppies then and there.  And after that, I was in a music store (what I called, at the time, a record store) and found several more CDs to purchase.  Chief among them, for my taste, was "Sunset Boulevard: The Classic Film Scores of Franz Waxman".  At first glance, it appeared to be a CD issue of one of the RCA "Classic Film Score" series from the 1970s with Charles Gerhardt conducting the National Philharmonic.  And, it was...sort of.  But it was expanded with a few more selections.   I hoped more of that series would be found in other bins, but...alas...there were no more.  The one I got was the first issue.  When it was reissued, it was a repeat of the original program on LP without the extras (or so I've read).  At any rate, the CD sounded glorious on my Roommate speakers.

The CD market was very slow getting things out....but somewhere along the way, it exploded.

No, DR TCB, you are not correct in your assumption about Plasma TVs.

Plasma TVs have been, for the most part, MORE expensive because they have the best pictures and best color saturation of all the flat-screens.

But...they don't sell as well and, thus, are being phased out by most manufacturers.  Which is a pity beause the glories of BD are even more glorious on plasma sets.

They do have a shorter life expectancy than sets which can be replenished by changing a bulb inside.  Plasma has gas which cannot be replenished.  When the picture dies, the set is worthless.  But they have an excellent track record.

Thanks, Ron.  That is the very reason I have not bought a flat screen, because I have no clue as to what I am looking for when I go shopping.

Speaking of new technology, I am about to get a new high end home theater system for our family room.  I would appreciate recommendations.  I think I will get a Samsung television, as I loved the one I had for just a couple of weeks before I stupidly traded it in for this lame Sylvania I've had since.  But I could especially use recommendations for the home theater surround system--I want something that will provide lossless sound up to 7.1.

And speaking of last night...

Here's the trailer for the new movie musical, Clear Blue Tuesday (http://bit.ly/uJJIG).  DR Julie was/is one the producers of the movie - and that accounts for some of her errant and truantness.

The movie will be premiering here in NYC on September 10.  It features a great bunch of Broadway and off-Broadway actors, who also happened to write their own music for the movie too.  There is a Fan Page on Facebook if you'd like to find out more about how the movie was made, the whole process.

As for the title of the movie, it refers to September 11, 2001.  The movie then covers six subsequent Tuesdays in September.

ARSENIC AND OLD LACE is coming along.....it really is a funny play, although I am still a bit put off by the whole idea of two little old ladies murdering a dozen old men.

There's nothing like the reality of a killer like John Wayne Gacy to spoil the fun of the fantastic ARSENIC AND OLD LACE. Wasn't there a serial killer in the 1980 working Route 70 out of Indianapolis?

Yes, DR ELMORE....the I-70 Killer was responsible for about a dozen deaths.  Most of them were young males thought to be hustlers and gay drifters.  The police were apathetic about the cases, and the families of two of the young men finally were able to get such a public outcry going, that they had to start an investigation.

Although the case was eventually solved, there is evidence that the killer is still at large.

Yes, there was.  His name was Herbert Baumeister (http://crime.about.com/od/serial/a/herb_baumeister.htm) and he was manager of a retail store....had a really nice home outside of Indy...and a wife and kids.

I was looking at flat screen TVs at Costco yesterday.  Am I correct in assuming that the plasma TVs are less expensive, because they have proven to be less dependable?

No, that is NOT right. I've never read anything to suggest that plasmas are any less reliable than LCDs. LCDs are more popular now (for some reason), so retailers can charge a premium for them.

Next I watched the last 1 hour and 16 minutes of JEANNE DIELMAN. The third day ended in shocking and somewhat melodramatic fashion. I didn't really understand why until I watched the first bonus feature. Still, the film was pretty amazing and certainly unlike anything else I've ever seen.

And leave us not forget John Wayne Gacy was from Chicago....and a serial killer named Dean Corll, born in Fort Wayne, Indiana, who with two teen accomplices, tortured, mutilated and raped 33 young men in Texas.  Jeffrey Dahmer was from Milwaukee and Ed Gein was from Wisconsin (and committed some of the most gruesome, repulsive murders on record).

Back from doing the long jog, returning tapes to the vault, picking up new tapes, listening to the new tapes, and doing some errands and whatnot.  Of the three tapes I picked up, two were mono, one was stereo and the two monos seem to be mono versions of what's on the stereo tape.  What's on the stereo tape is heartbreaking - only twelve minutes of a stunningly beautiful score, beautifully recorded in stereo - but it's twelve minutes out of about thirty-five.  I will find a way to release it, but it will have to be tagged onto something else, and that's not going to be easy to find something appropriate.  We shall see.

Also, good news today - I got another oft-requested cast album to put on CD.

Murder for ratings? Brazil cops suspect TV host (http://www.comcast.net/articles/news-world/20090811/LT.Brazil.TV.Killings/)

SAO PAULO, Brazil — In one murder after another, the Canal Livre TV show had an uncanny knack for being first on the scene, gathering graphic footage of the victim.

Too uncanny, say police, who are investigating the show's host, state legislator Wallace Souza, on suspicion of commissioning at least five of the murders to boost his ratings and prove his claim that Brazil's Amazon region is awash in violent crime.

"The order to execute always came from the legislator and his son, who then alerted the TV crews to get to the scene before the police," state police intelligence chief Thomaz Vasconcelos charged in an interview with The Associated Press.

The killings, he said, "appear to have been committed to get rid of his rivals and increase the audience of the TV show."

Today we officially completed the first round of work on Life Begins At 8:40. I finished the last score proof around 11:45 am, and the two volumes of the orchestra score were bound and ready for the conductor by 1 pm. the orchestra reading is scheduled forTuesday Sept 1, and I wish the LoC, who is supposed to pay our invoices within 6 weeks of receipt would pay us our June invoice, which is now 8 weeks after submission. Stupid asses. So much for your government at work. God knows at this time when we see the money, not to mention the invoice we submitted four weeks ago and the one we submitted last week. There may be avery ugly scene at the reading between my employers and me, and I'm prepared to initiate it.

I also forgot to mention that the retired cop on the fifth floor who always stunk up the elevator with his body odorhas died in the past week. It was his decomposing body that alerted the neighbors to a problem.

I actually forgot my appointment and called in 45 minutes late. They said to come in so I did.  The new doctor was clearly a basketball player.  She's very tall and I'm sure she played for a team around here. (girls basketball is huge in Iowa)

Anyway, she just said I need a sonogram.  I already knew that so I just paid to have her tell me to call tomorrow to give them a time I can schedule it.  She wasn't pleased when I told her it may not be until a week from Friday before I have time.  Between the new counters, a trip to Des Moines for a day seminar, jury duty and some Federal Court hearings, it's just not going to happen.

She told me to try to do it sooner so I know if I need to get my gall bladder removed.  She said it's better elective than in the middle of the night while I'm writhing in pain.  She also admitted I may never have another problem.  So, we'll see.  I'll check my calendar and call them tomorrow

Perhaps he could raise me in the wild.

One of my errands today was to go to Kathryn's and have the new living room chair loaded into my Vibe.  I really like it in the second spot I tried in the living room.  Now we need one more piece to complete our refurnishing based on the couch we inherited from Richard's mother.  I'm thinking a chair-and-a-half - bigger than a chair, smaller than a loveseat.

Is a Vibe a car?

Congrats on the new chair & good luck finding a chair-and-a-half.

There may be a very ugly scene at the reading between my employers and me, and I'm prepared to initiate it.

Could the musicians refuse to start playing until the invoices are settled?

No, but I don't mind letting the USA know how their national library screws over its contracted workers.  I've gone from being one its greatest supporters to one of its biggest critics.

Yes, DR Jane, I've had my Pontiac Vibe for 4 years now.  I know that because the dealership called me to congratulate me on our anniversary.  The back seats fold down and we've hauled a lot of stuff to college and back for DS Rob using that feature.

TOD

We did not have cable or color TV until I was about 11 years old. I used to go to my grandparents home on Friday night and sleep over so that I cold watch Saturday morning programming in color.

VCR
We must have gotten one of the first RCA VCR. We bought it used and it was $500. It lasted a long time.

When I went to bording school. I got a combination turntable/radio/8-track. I think I had three 8 tracks and hated them. two of them switched over in a middle of a song. I had the cast album of On a Clear Day & Rick Wakeman's The Wives of Henry 8th (Or something like that) The sound system also had Quad Sound which was also a short lived gimmick. But was a forerunner of surround sound.

I bought CDs before I had a cd player and I got A PIONEER because a friend of the family distributed them. I remember getting one when cds have subtracks within the tracks,. These were usually done with classical recordings. It was not a successful concept and was soon dropped. I also got Edwin Drood so I could program which person was Datchery and the Killer.

My widescreen is a panasonic projection I bought about 5 years ago and I will keep it until it breaks down and then I will myself and LED or LCD. I would have gone with plasma, but they have stop making them

I went back and forth between Blu Ray & HD. I chose Blu Ray because more studios were backing this format. Then a few weeks later HD dropped out of the race. So I chose right.

I have an IPod and I am on my 2nd one. The first one died.

I have a cell phone and I use it as my primary phone. I like to have it as I use the turnpike and the I95 a lot and if I break down it is great to have. I've also had a few medical emergencie and the cell phone was a life saver.

Never had a laser disc player. I was very tempted to get one but the discs were way too expensive. I really wanted it for three different sets. The Show Boat set with the three film versions, The Close Encounters & Beauty and the BEast work in progress.

Have I covered everything?

Good Evening!

...It really wasn't as "scorching" hot as "everyone" was saying it was today.  Yes, it was warm, but the humidity was down, and there was a nice breeze.

I stopped by a few food trucks to purchase some goodies - as well as to say Hi to the vendors - and even they said it wasn't it was a pretty good day.  However, they did have to wonder if the slower sales today were due to the fact that everyone was staying inside in the A/C since "they" kept saying that it was "miserable" outside.

Becca Ayers is in it.  That's cool.  I remember her when she was at the Okoboji Summer Theater while she attended Stephens College

His degrees are communications and Government Policy.  He has applied to multiple analyst jobs & I don't remember what else.  He would like to do something in the non-profit area, which is difficult as most don't pay anything.  About now I think he will do almost anything he can make a decent living at, or not.  He needs work.  At his age it is important to do something that will lead to something better in the future.

Most businesses don't want to hire someone out of the area which is another reason he is moving.

Here we go...The Topic of the Day (in multiple posts):

When did you get your first record player and what kind was it?
Our family has always had a record player, so that doesn't count.  But I vaguely remember having some kind of red plastic record player when my sister and I were living in Germany (when I was about four to seven years old).  Otherwise, the first time that I got my very own record player was when I was in high school and my parents got me a record player/radio/cassette player/recorder (not the musical instrument) all-in-one.  It was so cool, because now I could make cassettes of my records!

When did you get your first CD player?
1990.  I had gotten a job here where I still work (different job, though) and had been buying CDs for about three years already, so I figured that it was time to be able to actually listen to them without having to ask friends to make cassettes of them.  I got a Sony boombox-type that had a CD player, radio and tape player/recorder, although the tape player never really worked.  The very first CD that I ever owned was this version of Carl Orff's "Carmina Burana (http://www.amazon.com/Orff-Carmina-Burana-Bernd-Weikl/dp/B000001G5X/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&s=music&qid=1250038239&sr=1-1)."  Like others here, The Mystery of Edwin Drood was also an early CD purchase for me...even though I already had the vinyl album.

Your first VCR?
My parents' first VCR that they got in the very early 1980s only had 12 channels.  You had to manually set each channel to whichever station you wanted to watch.  You opened up the little box at the top of the VCR and there were tiny dials (and a plastic screwdriver thing to change the dials) that you set to various channel ranges, then you turned another little dial with your finger to tune in the specific channel.  It actually was a good VCR and lasted for several years before my parents got a new one because it was just such a hassle to use.  Fortunately, automatic tuning became the way of all VCRs.

Your first laserdisc player (presuming you got one)?
I actually still have the only laserdisc player that I've owned.  I originally bought the laserdisc to "1776" because it was the widescreen extended version and I thought that that was the coolest thing (still do)!  A co-worker (at the time) had a laserdisc player and was able to copy it to a videotape.  A few years later, a local video store was selling off their rental laserdiscs and I asked if they were going to sell the laserdisc player that they rented.  They said that I could have (for free!) the player that they used to play discs in their store and I took it!  It's quirky, but it works.  I have since gotten quite a few laserdiscs from eBay.

Your first DVD player?
The very first DVD that I owned was the original release of Jerry Herman's Broadway at the Hollywood Bowl (http://www.amazon.com/Jerry-Hermans-Broadway-Hollywood-Bowl/dp/6304558139/ref=sr_1_6?ie=UTF8&qid=1250043399&sr=8-6) and like my CDs, I bought DVDs before I ever had my own DVD player.  I bought a reconditioned unit through eBay (meaning, I found the listing on eBay, but I went to the seller's website directly).  The model originally sold for about $600, but I got it for just under $200!  I got it about 10 years ago and just sold it to a friend of mine only a couple of months ago.  It still works.  I have since gotten a region code-free DVD player and when my parents bought their RV (used...and they've since sold it), it had a non-working DVD player in it that they were just going to throw away.  I said that I'd take it and it only cost $28 to fix it!  AND I was able to find a code on the Internet to make THAT a region code-free player! AND it has a five-disc resume feature!  Meaning, I can play and remove up to five discs and it'll remember the last place I watched on each of those five discs!  That's a very, very, very (that's three verys) cool feature!!

Your first mp3 player or iPod?
I never had an actual iPod.  My parents bought me a Diamond Rio 32MB MP3 player and I bought (for about $60) a 32MB memory card.  It held about an hour of music total. :P I have since gotten a couple of other MP3 players, but they're kind of a hassle, so don't use them (and I'm too cheap to buy an iPod).  I prefer to buy real CDs with booklets and liner notes and pictures.  I have bought individual songs from iTunes, but only for special occasions.

Your first cell phone?
Very late in the 1990s, my sister and her boyfriend decided to get a family plan, so they got two two-phone plans.  One for them and one for me and my niece.  I had that for a few years until they decided to get something else, so I had to get something else.  I bought a Motorola StarTak phone.  I think it was the first flip-phone, but it had been out for sometime, already.  I had that for several years and then got my current phone probably four or five years ago.  I bought it because it could support programs to make my own ringtones and I love it!  It'll be a long time before I get a new phone because of that.

And [finally] your first Blu-Ray player and widescreen TV?
I have gotten only four or five Blu-Ray titles (all at substantial discounts), but I don't have a player for them.  The way things seem to be going, I don't know when (or if) I will get a Blu-Ray player. ::) I do, however, have a Panasonic 50" plasma 720p hi-def TV that I got last year!  And I got a hi-def DVR from Comcast so TV watching is good. ;D

I am watching one of the worst movies I've ever seen.  I'd heard it was bad, but nothing could have quite prepared me for what I'm seeing - it is called Endless Love, and seems to exist only so that Mr. Zefferelli can show young teenage boys naked or in very tight shorts.  Miss Shields, of course, has a body double.  But Mr. Zefferelli is not interested in Miss Shields, if you get my meaning.  Horrifying.  And Tom Cruise, with his voice at least an octave above where it is today, and in very tight jeans shorts, well, it must be seen to be believed.  I'm quite certain that Mr. Zefferelli was very involved in the costume selections for the young teenage boys, if you get my meaning.

*If you haven't seen the movie yet (and plan to see it), you should probably read this later since it contains some spoilers.

Interesting.  After reading parts of the original Julie/Julia blog, I wondered if that wasn't the case.

Well, the bottom cupboards are empty. I'm a little nervous about tomorrow night.  I think there may be some trouble getting one side of the countertop out. But, maybe that's just me being nervous.  Chris can't get here until about 8:00 PM and the countertops arrive Thurs at 7:00 AM so we don't have a lot of wiggle room if something goes wrong.   I do have the neighbor as plan B or an extra helper if necessary, so .... I just have to hope

I do not know whether I will be shot up with novocaine tomorrow morning - and I REALLY don't want one of those awful shots and hence am not looking forward in any way, shape, or form, to going.

Topic of the day.    I had several VCR's, never learned how to use them except to push play and eject, and then they went out of style.   So I guess I never really needed to learn anything except play and eject.

I still feel the same way about most electronics, TV's, phones, the alarm system on my car, by the time you learn how to use everything, it's outdated by the newest gadget on the market.

If Dr. Chew (this name always makes me smile big) is installing your crown, there should be no need.  He will remove the temp, make sure none of the stuff holding it in place is on your tooth (water and air, usually, are what is used) and then glue the new crown on after he sizes it and ensures it fits.  After that, he will check your bite and make adjustments with one of his noisy instruments if he needs to modify portions of it to match your bite.

Been there so many times I could do it myself.

I have this notion that you're trying to tell us something here, Bruce, but I cannot quite put my finger on it.....

I don't know when I'll see the movie...and I do want to see it...so I e-mailed the article to myself.  We'll see if I wait. ;)

Seeing DR George in the Brain next year, I would probably fly and rent a car.  Maybe stay in the same city, just to take a trip out of CA for a mini vacation.   Haven't really thought much beyond that.  I'm a bit slow about making plans for anything these days.  Senior moments.

Really good vibes for everyone who needs them.

Happy Wednesday.

Not much else is happening today.

And it's almost over.

That would be cool if DR Sam could come up to Olympia to see the show...assuming that I'm in it. ;)

If George is in the show, I'm quite certain that we'll have an LA contingent coming up.
