Well, you've read the notes, the notes had meat on them, and now it is time for you to post until the meaty cows come home.

Topic of the Day:  I don't know if this actually introduced any of the actors, but "The Big Chill" was certainly early in the careers of many of them.

Robert Altman was probably my favorite director of ensemble films and while I knew the stars of "McCabe and Mrs. Miller" before seeing the movie, I loved being introduced to the likes of Rene Auberjonois, John Schuck, Keith Carradine, Shelley Duvall, Michael Murphy and who knows how many others I've enjoyed over the years.

Glad to read you're feeling better after your food poisoning, BK. In my 12 years of reviewing restaurants, I think I only ever had food poisoning twice from someone I had to review. That's mercifully small, yet both loom large in the memory.

Thanks, George, for posting the additional review of the show.

BK,

I'm glad you're feeling better, but sometimes you come up with the most difficult topics.

 ;)

Does CITIZEN KANE count?

Certainly that ensemble cast was unknown to movie audiences when it was made.

One of my all-time favorite movies is L.A. CONFIDENTIAL.  Most of the ensemble cast was well known, but the two leading men (Russell Crowe and Guy Pearce) were virtually newcomers to American audiences.

I have only seen THE GROUP on television....on Encore, I think, and it is most enjoyable.  All of the women are well cast.  I haven't read the book, but I like the movie.   There was some book about movies where the writer visited the set and talked about the casting of the movie and lots of things - can't remember the book or the author - but he was there the day the crew was discussing the figures of the leading ladies....one unnamed cast member walked by, and a crew member said, under his breath:  "Two aspirin on an ironing board."

Good morning, all! I have a fast trek to Toyland this morning.

I've been up since 7:15, dealing with McGlinn CDs, bills, and getting things fready for the post office. I believe I will walk down to Columbus and 68th, mail my packages and then head to Toyland. After that i need to visit our Skip Kennon to deliver some music, and head home to work on Toyland reports.

That's my big day out and about.

Today on my train ride in, I finished Neil Gaiman's AMERICAN GODS and I have to say it was a completely wonderful read!  Aside from the breakneck unfolding of the plot (it seemed to me that something happened on almost every page), I was amazed at Gaiman's ability to bring each and everyone of his huge cast of characters to such vivid life, including his main protagonist who is essentially a cipher for most of the book and yet is so charismatic that I developed a little crush on him.)  For me, there were only two lulls in the book, but that might have been a results of reading those sections after not getting enough of a good night's sleep the night before.  And I was glad that I have a healthy education in mythology--it seems that a lot of people reading the book are reporting on Twitter that they are thrown by their lack of knowledge of the various gods and god-like figures. Jeeze--didn't these people ever read a THOR comic?

DR George thanks for posting that link to the tv finales. I had seen one but not by date (by network).

It is odd to me that so many shows are running their finales against each other.

We have the SURVIVOR finale vs the DESPERATE HOUSEWIVES finale.

The LOST finale vs the CELEB APPRENTICE finale.

The CHUCK finale vs the DWTS finale.

And the craziest to me is the AMERICAN IDOL finale vs the DANCING WITH THE STARS finale.  I guess since it's only the performances on IDOL it's not exactly the finales of both.

I totally forgot to point out how wonderful the Olympia Brain's Rod was. The actor did a fantastic job with the role, and I think I may have liked his performance even more then the LA Rod (which is saying a lot, since the LA Rod was really quite wonderful).

Kudos also to the Olympia Brain's Donna. I enjoyed watching her as well. A few times she was a bit too hyperactive, but otherwise I thought she did quite nicely.

And DR George, next time, if there is a next time, that a theatre in your area does THE BRAIN..try out for the part of Private Parts. I just know you could do a great job with that part!

Whooda thunk it when I bought it but we are almost out of room on our 150 gig external hard drive. Much of it comes from Anthony's sound files. He transfers records and tapes to CD and he keeps many of the files for a while in case someone says something is wrong. I'm going to buy another external and we will now each have one. I will take my stuff off one of the hard drives. I don't need a Terabyte (I know you should always buy more than you need but that's excessive) so I will probably get a 320 gig at Best Buy.

I went ahead and took advantage of Jet Blue's $10 ticket sale yesterday, and booked a trip down to Richmond. Since the $10 sale only applied to any remaining seats on flights today and tomorrow, I flew down to Richmond this morning, and I'll be flying back tomorrow night.

So, I hopped on the subway at 5:30, got to JFK at 6:30, and then stood in the security line with a whole bunch of other people who had decided to take advantage of the $10 sale. I don't think I've ever seen the security area in the terminal so packed with people, so busy.  However, they had all of the security stations opened, and the line kept moving and the TSA agents made sure to keep everyone moving.  The flight up was fine, and my parents picked me up at RIC.  And then once I got settled here, I took a nap. And I just woke up from said nap. ;)

A very frustrating day so far with good moments: I had to send a fax to a singer on the Herbert songs recording, but for the second time the fax number she provided will not accept a fax; it's on a phone where you can hear the answering machine pickup and speak but then the line is busy and the fax won't go through. Dealing with this for too long this morning screwed up my walk to visit Skip Kennon so I ended up in a taxi on Eighth Avenue that moved about half a block per light change, so the taxi bill for going 14 blocks cost me around $10, which is4-5 too much in my book. The traffic situation in this City is ridiculous. I believe I will die in an ambulance in a traffic jam because this town's a mess and not getting better. Then, I gave the driver the wrong address so that put me off course. My visit wth Skip, however brief, was nice, and I had a good time at City Center with Joshie.

As for today's travel, well... I was toying with heading down this week for a brief visit to coincide with a couple of things going on here in Richmond this week, and, once I saw JetBlue's sale, well... -The round-trip cost less than my usual Chinatown bus ticket! -As well as saving me from 10 additional hours of travel time.  I actually have a reception down here in Richmond next Tuesday that I'd like to attend, so, hopefully, JetBlue will run another $10 sale next week. ;)

The frustrating day continues: I ordered from an Amazon.com vendor what I thought was a vocal score for Victor Herbert's operetta THE SERENADE. Well, it is. Sort of. Kessinger has reprinted the vocal score, which is about 8x11 inches, then cut it down - not reduced it - to fit a 6x9 binding: the sides of the music are cut off and the bottom stave of the piano is missing. Try explaining this to a non-musician. and the asses charged me $30 for this piec e of crap. So, i'm raising hell with amazon as well as the marketplace vendor since Kessinger, the reprint house, refuses to put their address on this product. I am very annoyed at the moment.

I began with last night's NURSE JACKIE episode. Harvey Fierstein was the guest star as a man with a dying lover. He's reluctant to pull the plug and goes through agony trying to decide.

I really love some of the "small touches" the producers of "Chuck" have been employing.

Last night, there were two simply wonderful ones that made me laugh with delight!

And the episode irritated me beyond belief, at least the Ellie scenes did. Argh! That same tired old plot device of keeping secrets from your loved ones that leads the person into getting into tons of trouble. I am SICK of this.

All of the Buy More stuff with the returning girl friend I skimmed right over. I hate all of those characters apart from Morgan and he's getting tiresome.

And as for Chuck's dilemma. I had the tooth thing figured out long before they arrived at the answer. And, like on MEDIUM, the powers that be always doubt Chuck even when he's proven himself right time after time.

Nice to see Brandon Routh guest starring again, and I have hopes he's going to turn up for the season finale episode since it looks like that's where things are leading.

While I ate lunch I watched last night's CASTLE. I arrived at the solution to the mystery mere minutes before it was revealed, but it was a good mystery and an excellent episode.

I noticed that TCM-HD was showing some Miss Marple movies today. I caught parts of MURDER AHOY and MURDER MOST FOUL, and they both looked simply wonderful in HD, very crisp with great contrast and black levels. I didn't have time to linger on them, but I'm sure they'll be around again in HD, and I'll record them the next time around.

Then I watched my work project for the day: MARKED FOR DEATH with Steven Seagal. Pretty bad. Acting mostly atrocious except from Keith David who acted circles around everyone else. All about Jamaican drug gangs and voodoo, it was pretty trite and instantly forgettable.

There are a few guys on my worksite who are big fans of this movie. Just goes to show that there is an audience for EVERY movie no matter how terrible or trying.

There were no bonus features at all on the Blu-ray of MARKED FOR DEATH, not even a trailer, so that opened up some time in the afternoon for additional viewing.

This is when I took the time to watch last night's CHUCK. (See above.)

Tonight we are going for Chinese food (one of my favorites). And Sunday it is my niece's first birthday party. And it will also be at a chinese restaurant. Although the one on sunday will be a buffet. So far there are 72 people attending.

I wonder if she will hate it since she doesn't really like strangers too much. Although i suspect she will be fine as long as she has food and is not expected to be held by all these 72 people.

Thanks, Mike, but this is more of the case where we audition for the show and Josh (the director/music director) decides where he wants to cast you.  I had to specifically ask to read for The Brain.

re: "Chuck"

SPOILAGE

One of the inherent evils of being involved in top secret espionage is that your family members must NOT be involved.   I think that's why many shows feature characters without families or find ways to "kill off" an identity, going through all the motions of faking deaths and funerals.  Then the spy gets a new identity and moves on with his life with no attachments.  That protects the innocents, too.

In "Chuck", we've seen Awesome and Morgan get on board with Chuck's secret.  The enemy still thinks Awesome is a player, and no one will ever believe Morgan is one.   And, in a twist, Ellie's being manipulated by a Ring agent -- in essence using her against her brother but, inevitably, looking toward a day when they'll all be involved.

Yes, trouble will ensue.  That's part of the game they're playing with the story arc.  For me, it's no more tiresome than any of the other cliche-riddled series that trot out the usual plot devices even when delivering some entertaining TV.

Meanwhile, the "romance" between Chuck and Sarah is really the one tiresome thing I wish they would dispense with.  Doesn't work for me.  And such romances have always killed shows in which the sexual tension between uninvolved characters made the show interesting.   Unless they plan on attempting a "Hart to Hart" scenario, with John in the role of Max...and with Morgan as Freeway...I don't see how they can hope to sustain it.

Nevertheless, I enjoyed last night's episode and especially those two wonderful touches:  As Chuck channel surfs while sitting in front of the TV with Sarah, he comments, "There's never anything good on Monday nights" ("Chuck" is a Monday night show).  And then when Chuck -- in the wee small hours of the morning -- calls the general for a video chat, he Sarah and John (and we) see a strange man padding to the refrigerator in the background.  Husband?  Boyfriend?  Buddy?  LOL!  It adds more humanity to the general's character.

Holy moley on rye, I've just been dealing with yet another pressing plant screwup - this one so stupid as to just boggle the mind.  I got an e-mail this afternoon telling me someone had received their Legend of the Lost CD and the label film on the CD itself was for Last Man on Earth - a CD we haven't even pressed yet, and may never press (it was supposed to be two releases ago but we had to put a hold on it for various reasons that may or may not get worked out).  The music ON the CD is Legend of the Lost, and the rest of the packaging is fine.  So, I've made the plant repress the entire run and tomorrow they will send replacements to all the dealers overnight - that way by the time they get their shipments they'll already have the replacements ready to include.

I do hope you're following this up with Anansi Boys. . .

Tell me, have you read Neil Gaiman's SANDMAN series?
Have you read Good Omens?
Do you read Terry Pratchett as well?

I also really liked Gaiman's The Graveyard Book. . .

New York City authorities have evacuated parts of Times Square once again due to a suspicious package, police tell FoxNews.com.

Authorities tell Fox News the suspicious package was called in at 9:06 p.m. ET, though the package is believed to be garbage, NBC New York reports.

The evacuation comes on the heels of an attempted car bombing in Times Square on May 1.

I watched two episodes of the new season of THE TUDORS this evening. So I'm ready for Episode Four now. I had some problems with Episode Three: I don't buy for a second Henry's asking the divorced Anne of Cleves to go to bed wth him, since he found her so repellent that he never consummated the marriage. I know he became friendlier with her after the divorce and she was a well-liked figure, but I didn't buy the bed thing at all. I'm also not fond of Catherine Howard, who's just a little too Valley Girl for my taste. God knows she was a moron and the stupidest of all six wives, but she's just a bit too dumb and gauche to buy as someone an ambitious family could foist off on Henry.

I didn't feel like LAW & ORDER, so I watched a couple of BONES episodes from disc one in the second season set, the disc I skipped when I was rewatching BONES a couple of weeks ago. The story where Booth is wrestling with a new boy friend for his former girl friend now involved in his young son's life was very touching and the case was a good one.

I'm also not fond of Catherine Howard, who's just a little too Valley Girl for my taste. God knows she was a moron and the stupidest of all six wives, but she's just a bit too dumb and gauche to buy as someone an ambitious family could foist off on Henry.

I agree with all of your opinions. Of course, the liberties being taken with the story now seem pretty frequent.

Even better was the BONES episode where skeletons of a young mother and her baby are found. This had one of the most surprising twists ever in a BONES episode, and it's one of the best of the season's episodes from a mystery point of view.

Then I watched tonight's NCIS. A very easy mystery to solve once all the evidence was revealed. More interesting was Abby's Mexican investigation and where that's going to lead as we near the end of the season.

Then I watched tonight's GLEE. Some nice numbers and some touching drama with Kurt and his dad. Kurt had two radically different songs and did well with both. The "One Love" finale was nicely done, but for the first time, I felt their rendition couldn't hold a candle to an earlier rendition: Adam Lambert did stupendously with the song on AMERICAN IDOL last season.

Dinner was good. But beforehand we had a small scare.

The restaurant we went to is attached to a dollar store.  My mom and i went in there. She was looking for some bags. I left her there and went to the scrapbooking section. Then all of a sudden she comes over and says she cannot find her purse.

So i tell her to stay at the front of the store (to make sure nobody leaves with it).

I run and tell someone who works there and her and i run through the aisles.  But luckily I suspected that my mom had left her purse near the bags she was looking at.

And sure enough she must have taken down a handful of bags. Because her purse was hanging on the back of the rack. Whew!

This is an old family recipe and has lots of raisins in it!

I didn't get any of those MGM Blu-rays today (now I'm not sure they'll even send them). If THE MAGNIFICENT SEVEN box set (four films) doesn't show up tomorrow, I'll go ahead and begin working on the single package entries of those Mel Brooks comedies: HIGH ANXIETY, HISTORY OF THE WORLD, and ROBIN HOOD: MEN IN TIGHTS. I've already covered them in the MEL BROOKS COLLECTION set, but I'll check them out to make sure they are no different from the discs in that box set.

I loved Anansi Boys and Graveyard Book. Willh have to check out American Gods.

I do hope you're following this up with Anansi Boys. . .

Tell me, have you read Neil Gaiman's SANDMAN series?
Have you read Good Omens?
Do you read Terry Pratchett as well?

I also really liked Gaiman's The Graveyard Book. . .

You're very welcome.  Although the scavenger hunt took up a good portion of my weekend, I mainly enjoyed the sense of accomplishment(?) I felt from getting up early and having some very full and long days.  I also had some friends in town this past weekend, and got to spend some quality one-on-one time with them.  Heck, there were even times when I didn't tweet for up to ten minutes at a time! ;)

Strange, I don't see it anywhere else

It was evacuated. I just came from Times Square. I don't know any details but I couldn't go from Broadway and 46th to Broadway and 47th due to police activity.

UGH!

Although, with the current "climate", better safe than sorry.

I still remember when I purchased the March of the Falsettos/Falsettoland double-CD. The label on the first disc said March of the Falsettos, but the music was some Arabic pop artist.  -And then when I went back to Tower Records to exchange the CD, I asked them to play the "new" CD just in case it too was "wrong". And it was wrong. As were the three remaining copies on their shelves. Spoo!

Wow that is great DR Jose that you were able to travel for $10. Were there any extra charages added?  Did they give you food on the flight for that price?

I was also going to ask about extra charges.  I wish I could fly someplace for $10, extra charges or not.

The cost of the tickets: $20.00
Taxes & Fees: $21.84

*If you're on Facebook and are a Fan of "Jet Blue", you can receive advance notification of any future sales.  And since they're still in the midst of celebrating their 10th Anniversary, the buzz is that more sales and giveaways are yet to come.

I just found out something that really gets my allergies going. Fresly cut grass!  It's almost as bad for me as perfume or cigarette smoke. My eyes were burning. :(

(luckily i was not cutting grass just near it).

Aw, that's actually kind of sad to me. The smell of freshly cut grass is just so, well, fresh to me.

Mike, what about our favorite chorus boy?

Oh, yes. I would like to see more of him.

It was nice visiting an old friend, the score to Little Shop.... So much fun to play.  I got to the theatre and found out that they were doing a run through (which was fine by me).  I txted the MD and thanked him for telling me about the run through (NOT!).  His score was marked well.  It was well sung and well directed.  It opens next week and I'll get to visit another old friend, the synthesizer book, for the fourth time.
