Title: THERE'S ALWAYS TOMORROW
Post by: bk on July 20, 2007, 12:09:12 AM
Well, you've read the notes, the notes were today, but there's always tomorrow, and now it is time for you to post until the cows come home - there's always tomorrow because they certainly aren't budging right now.

In my DVD player:  two versions of "Taming of the Shrew."  One from 1929 with Mary Pickfor and Douglas Fairbanks...their only movie together.  And it's only 63 minutes long!  There have obviously been some major cuts in the script! ::) The other version is from 1980 and is 127 minutes long (fewer cuts) and stars John Cleese (yes, THAT John Cleese!) as Petruchio.  We'll see what that's like. ;)

OH!

DR JMK - or others - I keep meaning to ask... Is there a proper term/name/label for that accompaniment pattern... you know, the one goes "da da da, da da-da da-da..."  That one?  ;)

It's the basis for the "Brasil", as well as a slew of other tunes.  -The fifth rises a half step, then another one, then back down to the fifth..  -"Buenos Aires" from Evita uses/steals the same accompaniment pattern.

Last night I decided to check out a couple of shows at the Midtown International Theater Festival.

The first one was Nosferatu, playing at the Where Eagles Dare Theater.  I was very pleasantly surprised by the creative staging and thought it was wonderfully directed.  The acting was good, and they told the story very well.  It turns out that what they presented, while it stood on its own quite nicely, was actually Act 2 of a larger show, the first part of which was presented last March.  They said they plan to put the whole thing together and present the entire piece - when? - why for Halloween, of course!

Te second show was Will Success Spoil Rock Hunter,? at the Mainstage Theater.  This is a new production of George Axelrod's Broadway show about a reporter who interviews Rita Marlowe and makes some unsavory deals with the devil along the way.  There is a film with the same name, but my understanding is that the story in the film is entirely different from the one in the show.  This one was more silly, which I don't ordinarily like, but I found myself unusually entertained.

All in all, a good night.

Friday morning greetings!  Today is my last information-waitressing day until August 11 - YAY!

Last night's book group potluck was great - in addition to the barbecued chicken we provided, our guests brought:

Shallot quiche
Mixed salad greens
Salt-crusted sourdough bread
Veggies & dip
Homemade mango ice cream and Milano cookies

We enjoyed part 1 of Helen Mirren's Elizabeth I.

There's always tomorrow
For dreams to come true.
Believe in your dreams come what may.
There's always tomorrow
For dreams to come true.
And so little time in a day.
We all pretend
The rainbow has an end
And you'll be there, my friend,
Someday...
There's always tomorrow
For dreams to come true.
Tomorrow is not far away.

The lyrics to this song never really made sense to me.

RESULTS spoilers for last night'sSO YOU THINK YOU CAN DANCE.

*
*
*
*

rant ahead.

I am so so annoyed with both the judges and the voting public.

To me two of the weakest dancers are still there (sara and kameron).  And we lost 2 great dancers.

I get that the judges wanted to save jamie. She was my first choice to save as well. But lauren, come on. I am not liking her much at all.  Okay maybe they did say one thing that was right.  She has not gone as far as she can go, yet anya is already at the top of her game. But i think anya is a better dancer.

Although to me lauren and neil and danny/anya's dances were 2 of the best on wed night.

As for the men though, i am LIVID. I love love love Hok.  He is the best solo dancer (and did the best solo last night). It is just a crime that he will not make the tour.  I get it that he probably had the weakest partner routine of the 3 in the bottom. But neil and danny are the same type of dancer. And to say that dominic and sara already represent B dancing. Well Hok is a thousand times better than them.

Ughh. I was really upset that the public did not put lacey/kameron in the B3. Because i think kameron would have gone for sure.  I am hating that his partnering with lacey has kept him safe all this time.

And what is up with the public loving sara/pasha. They did not like either of them before.

4.1-Magnitude Earthquake Hits San Francisco AreaFriday , July 20, 2007

 SAN FRANCISCO —

A magnitude 4.1 earthquake jolted San Francisco Bay area residents awake early Friday.

There were reports of items falling off shelves and broken glass, but no immediate reports of serious damage or injuries.

The earthquake struck at 4:42 a.m. about 2 miles east of Oakland, according to the U.S. Geological Survey, and it could be felt on both sides of the San Francisco Bay.

Singdaw mentioned Keely Smith. Now there's a name I've haven't heard in ages! I don't have any of her recordings, but I must revisit her work.

Speaking of someone I hadn't thought of recently, Nina Simone is on the soundtrack to GOLDEN DOOR. I was a fan of hers at one time, long ago. When I heard her the other day I was pleasantly surprised. I really enjoyed the two songs of hers in the movie.

Any other H/Ks have feedback on which singers they feel hold up well after not hearing them for years and years?

Our favorite family fortune cookie story:  We had just taken the boys out to get them new school clothes, and then went to a Chinese restaurant.  At the end of the meal, we got our fortune cookies.  Zach opened his, read it, and then exclaimed in a hilariously loud and absolutely disgusted 6 year-old voice:  "Hey, what kind of stupid fortune is this?"  His fortune read:  You will soon get new clothing.

Bossa Nova:  oy, don't get me started on Bossa Nova.  TOO LATE!!  As any DR who has been in my home environment will attest, I have a literal wall of Brasilian CDs.   I am still amazed that BK had no previous Joao Gilberto in his collection, as Joao is one of the seminal forces behind the Bossa Nova.  Luiz Bonfa is a little less to my liking, kind of a second-tier Jobim, but his early albums (all available on CD) are nice.  BK and others--you should check out the legendary guitarist/composer Baden Powell (yes, named after the founder of the Boy Scouts).  Baden Powell mixed Bossa Nova with more indigenous African rhythms and wrote several big hits which made it north, notably Canto de Ossanha, which became Let Go.

But I digress.  If you love Jobim and those of his ilk, check out (in no particular order):

Edu Lobo
Marcos Valle
Ivan Lins
Milton Nascimento
Jorge Ben (later Jorge Benjor)
Gilberto Gil
Oscar Castro-Neves

If you're a fan of Astrud (personally I rate her far down the list of great Brasilian chanteuses), check out (again in no particular order):

Elis Regina
Gal Costa
Elizete Cardoso (Jobim was her arranger in the 50s and her early album Cancao do Amor Demais--with Joao Gilberto, BTW--is considered one of the seminal early Bossa Nova albums, though it doesn't sound particularly Bossa to our modern ears)
Gracinha Leporace (Mrs. Sergio Mendes, and one of the most sadly underrated singers of her generation)
Wanda Sa (also transliterated as Wanda da Sah)

BK, don't know if you're aware, but Jobim's early (like mid to late 50s) recordings of his own orchestral pieces (orchestrated by him) are now out on CD, on a release called Sinfonia de Rio.  Good companion listening to your Symphonic Jobim.

Last week's show seemed sillier to me than the first season's episodes, but I may have just been away from the show too long. It was still highly enjoyable. Looking forward to tonight's episode.

I think you're right - it is sillier - but tightly crafted.

Dear DR Jose Jo jo .......  I actually think of the 2 parts of your question as 2 different things.  The rhythm pattern is to me just a basic samba rhythm (or at least one of the variations of a samba), and the "rising and lowering" fifth is a device that shows up in lots of other stuff also.  I have often "stolen" that pattern for an accompaniment...... and as far as being used by show composers, think of "That Mister Man Of Mine," and even the added song "Maybe This Time" by the lovely Mr. Kander.

Oh, and to quote the quixotic pixie.......

"I'm up, I"m up......"

A large good morning to all assembled and present.  Dear DR Laura was right..... we had a very big desert storm move through last night, and it was rich with dust and thunder and lightning and rain.....  I thought it was pretty damned glorious!

And I thought I would post a picture here of the lovely old house that we've lived in for the past ten years.  We have sold "the ranch" and it was the escrow that closed yesterday.  I have found a smaller "patio home" that should close escrow today or Monday, and Kerry is taking a little time to look around and decide what he wants to buy.

Even though I will miss my fruit trees and the very friendly neighborhood here, it is a very good and positive move forward for both of us.  I like to think that the Universe knows better than I what is the best direction and outcome for me.   ::)

For you close harmony lovers, check out these Brasilian groups:

Quarteto em Cy (the first iteration of this group was all sisters, all of whose names started with "Cy", later they added some non-family members)
MPB4 (a kind of male version of QEC)

And for BK & other Astrud lovers:  get the Elenco (the great Bossa Nova label founded by Aloysio de Oliveira) release "The Astrud Gilberto Album," which is arranged by Mr. Jobim personally.

Just finishing my "homework", reviewing the plot details of the past 6 Potter novels.  The detailed summaries alone run to 40-50 pages per novel!  Once I speed through the new and final volume this weekend, so as to avoid spoilers, I may re-read the entire series at a more leisurely pace.

Today at Toyland, just before my colleague Tom Murray arrived, I was visited by a process server, giving me two copies of a legal document telling the Institute that we needed to appear in court next Thursday with our landlord to be evicted.  I faxed the document to our New York attorney and to our California office.  An hour later, I was notified that the new landlord had finally sent the lease for the new office to our attorney this morning, and it will go to California for  its final procedures.

Around an hour later, I was informed that our NY attorney has contacted the landlord's attorney about postponing the court date to August 3rd.  At this point, we either will move on Tuesday to a temporary storage space or stay put till July 31 and move to a new office.  Both sound positive, but I'm waiting for the lease and the payments to arrive.

Good Afternoon!

Greetings from Uptown/West Harlem in New York City!

:)

-The train ride up was nice and easy, and even though it was basically a sold out train, it didn't feel so crowded and crazy as sold  out trains can feel.  Due to some track traffic, the trip between Richmond and DC took about 30 minutes longer than scheduled, but they made up some of that delay by the time we reached Penn Station.  *It was the first time I had heard the announcement: "This train is authorized to travel at speeds up to 125 mile per hour."  -And I guess that's how they made up the time.

And now...

Jason, short flights often don’t serve snacks anymore, longer ones charge your for small meals/large snacks.  Whenever possible I pack a sandwich & snacks to take with me.  If not possible, I try to buy something at the airport (not always possible).

On flights where we were delayed after boarding, the extra supply of snacks were brought out & passed around.  Did you ask?  Sometimes if I mention I don’t feel well & just need some pretzels, some can be found.  Pretzels are no longer the standard snack, there are cookies, chips & other strange goodies.

And I would complain about the toilet, rude flight attendant & the lack of a snack under the circumstances.  Even if it doesn’t get you anything, an official complaint should be made

So this weekend I'm putting together what I want on the site and getting some links to lawyers' sites that I like so he can get an idea about it.   Should be fun.

DR PennyO had a bad Craig's list experience looking for a New York sublet.  Where is our Ms O?

Good!

When Katrina hit, a lot of people relocated to Atlanta. We had already bought our house in Atlanta but hadn't moved in yet. I was so depressed about the whole situation that I couldn't sleep at night and felt that I had to do something. I decided that I could offer this house. Although my DH was skeptical and worried about everything, I went to Craigs' list to see if there was someone from N.O. who needed a place to stay. I was specifically looking for someone with a large dog who was having a hard time finding a place because of the large dog.

I found a nice couple, with a huge dog (a big red dog who looked like a German shepherd but twice the size---he ate the back door!). They had only been together for a few weeks and were sort of thrown together by the hurricane. They weren't perfect guests but it was more because they were in their 20's and didn't know better a lot of times. It was worth it for the friendships that came out of it and we still stay in touch (they are no longer together but we didn't expect them to be...).

The only thing that bugs me about Craig's list is when people have sold items and don't bother to remonve them from the listing.

What a relief that nothing happened to the HDTV!!!   ;D

Seriously, glad to read that you're OK.

Ain't THAT the truth!

I feared the worst after hearing a crack and lots of rattling.  I got up and dashed into the living room (as much as I was able to "dash" at 4:42 a.m. PDT) and you'd never have known anything had happened except for the relaxed swinging of a light fixture on the ceiling.

You can find great deals on household items on Craig's List---sometimes people just want to get rid of stuff and don't care how much return they make.

Dear DR Ron:

Most guys shake it after they pee.

There's actually a joke here:

A Marine and a sailor are in the men's room at the Navy Exchange.  Both turn from the urinal at about the same time and the sailor heads for the door.

The Marine says, "Hey!  They teach us Marines to wash our hands after we 'P'!"

"Yeah, I know," the sailor says. "In the Navy, they teach us not to 'P' on our hands!"

And thatta is my story.

Work wanted:
I thought about advertising my services as a personal trainer on my local Craigs List, but after checking out the nature of some of the ads put there, I thought I'd do better to stick with referrals from my customers. No room for misunderstanding or misinterpretation that way!

Work needed:
I've offered jobs three times, each time carefully specifying very low rates, for easy work, as that's all I wanted to pay and if no one wanted to do the work for that amount, fine.

I got two good workers for two of my tasks, lots of enquiries, and got abused via email by one person who did not want the job in question, but wanted to tell me what a jerk I was for offering such a low wage.

Depending on what you need done, I'd suggest going through Elance, and make sure you're VERY CLEAR about what you want, when you need it, and that there must be communication at all times between you both. People have to bid on jobs, so you know what they think the job is worth, and you can check out their feedback online.

I'm very excited about the web design.  TIm is a nice guy, he did a big preentation and tried to sell be on using his services even though I had already told him I wanted to hire him.   I was going to tell him to stop, but he'd obviously been working on the presentation, he had a mock up of a website and everything. It was fun.

So this weekend I'm putting together what I want on the site and getting some links to lawyers' sites that I like so he can get an idea about it.   Should be fun.

May I share some juvenalia with you department:

I wrote my first musical when I was probably 9 or 10.  It was actually optioned by the Salt Lake City Library Theater (don't ask--they had a theater there and they optioned two of my plays, oy).  One of the big 11 o'clock numbers (there were several, LOL) was called "Always Tomorrow."  My 10 year old lyric:

Always tomorrow
There's always the next day
To think of your problems
And then try to solve them
Yes, tomorrow never comes
It turns into today
And when today arrives, just turn away

I know my Tony is just around the corner (as Maria was heard to say).  ;)

Good Evening!

Well, since DR elmore has reported yet...

Instead of heading to the East Village for macaroni and cheese at S'Mac, we stayed in the UWS and had Indian food.  We walked by one place that's now an Italian restaurant, and we walked by a new-ish place, and then ended back up at Swagat - which we had tried before.  We both ordered Vindaloo's - I, lamb; he, shrimp - plus some appetizers and breads.  All very good.  And since they place was not that busy tonight, the waiter was able to use the next table next to us to set up all our dishes.

And, as usual, the company was sparkling, and the talk scandalous!  ;)

After dinner, DR elmore headed home, and I headed down to Grom for dessert.  Again, not really much of a line.  :)  Tonight's selection: a medium cup, half Extranoir Cioccolata, and half Fior di latte con Menta.  Buon giusto!  (I'm not sure if that's the properly Italian for "very good", but I think you get the gist.)  :)

Hmm.. You may want to check The Beacon.  However, there are some truly "hidden" hotels on the UWS, none of which whose names come to mind right now.

I've also been hearing about some great deals at the Mela and QT off of Times Square, as well as The Roosevelt over on Madison Ave.

Perhaps I will read the book I picked up the other day, FILMI, FILMI, INSPECTOR GHOTE. I am  sure it is just about the same as reading the Harry Potter book.

I need to finish reading MAGIC TIME before I begin the Potter book.  My friends down the street are no longer going to the Midnight party so I will have to wait & get my copy when the bookstore opens tomorrow at 9:00AM.  I hope they aren't busy then.

Off to read.  I may not be back until after I have read the 7th book, I'm just too afraid to turn on my computer & have my fun spoiled.  Keith can let me know if I have email. :)

DRs Jane, Cillaliz, etc:  What I've been finding on Craig's List under vacation rentals for Manhattan sound promising, but I'm real cautious.  I have emailed about one that I found there and cross-referenced at Vacation Rentals (http://www.vacationrentals.com).

I was pointed to CL by my friend Doug, who lives in Manhattan and who works very near where that explosion took place Wednesday.  He's OK and says he has a long story to tell about it when we see him in October.

Absolutely gorgeous day today in NY.  My parents are still in town, so I spent the day with them and my aunts.  We went to the Bronx Botanical Gardens, and we couldn't have asked for a nicer day to be out and about amongst all the glorious trees and flowers, flora and fauna.  They are running a lovely exhibit on Carribean flowers at the moment, and I especially enjoyed wandering around the conservatory and the various lily ponds.

Then, we all went off to early dinner on City Island - Sammy's Seafood Palace - or something like that.  The service was awful.  They brought two people's entrees (but not their side dishes that went with them), and completely ignored the other four people, never bringing their food, and ignored our repeated requests to get our waitress or the manager.   >:( My father got up and went to find the manager, but when he told her what was going on,, the manager, rather than aopologizing and dealing with the situation simply said to him, "The waitress is excellent so if she hasn't brought out the food there must be a very good reason for it," and never even bothered to go check on what was happening.   >:(  >:( I responded that we, in turn, had a very good reason for leaving.  So after about 15 minutes of the two people who had half their meal served getting cold, with no one else getting any food and no explanation being offered, we got up and walked out.  As we were leaving, a waiter finally started to bring out the other food - but at that point it was way too late.  We left and found a much nicer and more gratious place to eat, where the food and the service were both wonderful. ;D

Good evening all........ I am not buying Harry Potter tonight, and i am not standing in any line anywhere tonight !

It was a productive day today, but it required long periods of time of me being outside of air-conditioning, and waiting for things to happen.  The good thing is that I managed to get one of the estimates finished for some work that I want done this coming week.  And they can even schedule it for the time period I have available.

And I have the other man scheduled for the other estimate I need, tomorrow morning.  So the 2 really big, yucky, and messy projects look like they can both get done just before I have to move heavy furniture and even heavier musical instruments.

Pray for Rosemary's Baby........and me.

DR JULIE,
So sorry to hear about your deesasterous restaurant (we can't call it dining, can we?) experience. I can't believe that people get away with this sort of thing. There used to be a restaurant near me that had a clever name, but a reputation among locals for poor food. I think they depended solely on the tourist trade--no need to please them because they probably wouldn't return soon, anyway. I do loathe that attitude. I'm glad you all walked out and were able to find a good meal with good service.

As for "So You Think You Can Dance?"...

All I can really say is that it really is a true competition this year.  The level of the dancers and the dancing is really high this season.  There are no easy decisions, and no real losers at this point in the game.  Disappointments, yes.  Obvious choices, no.

Gabe and I drove by Border's today to get our "bracelet" to hold our place in line for tonight's midnight madness.  At 9:00, there was a line of probably 250-300 all around the Border's parking lot; I took one look and said "Forget it."  Unbeknownst to me, the custodian at the church where I work was already in line and he brought an extra bracelet for Gabe--wasn't that sweet?  We still don't know if we're going to go tonight--Gabe has a swim meet at 8 tomorrow morning and we just don't think he should be up that late.  I can get up at 7 and run down to Fred Meyer and get a copy then.  Or just hit Border's later in the day for our reserved copy.

I am an officially official reviewer now at DVDTalk.com, which has some remarkably intelligent and well-informed reviewers (so what are they doing hiring me, you might ask?  Well, don't ask that, it's rude).  I don't get my first "real" screeners until next week, so I put up a short review of Land of the Pharoahs (one of my not-so-guilty pleasures) here:

Greetings from Louisville!

Food report:

Lunch: Fried fish at my favorite local fish shop. And hush puppies. YUM!

Snack: A banana milkshake (small) from Sonic. YUM!

Dinner: It was fried chicken night at home. Fried chicken, mashed potatoes, gravy, broccoli casserole, buttered rolls (of which I did not, sadly, partake) and green beans. YUM-O!!

My dad and I had a lovely day, running errands and doing some shopping while my mom was at work. He even treated me to some a nice pair of pants and a couple of pairs of shoes. Very exciting stuff!

Then, mom and I went out grocery shopping for the two big parties she has planned over the next couple of evenings. While we were at Costco, she treated me to the DVD set of "Planet Earth," which I almost bought at Chicago O'Hare for $30 more than we ultimately got it here. I'm racking up here!

And I went swimming today for a little while, making sure I swam some laps to get in some actual activity. Good stuff.

DR Jose: Glad you got home safely!!

My cat has learned how to use the TV remote. He seems to be rather fond of the Spanish channel.

Are you making up words to go with the soap opera, DR Sandra?

Remember when we did that with that Japanese soap opera that time we got a cable channel in a motel room somewhere?

There are two parties in Sioux City, at Wal-Mart and at Barnes & Noble.  I know Barnes & Noble here had 1500 copies coming in. Wonder how long it will take them to sell out.

They had close to that number in fargo...

My guess is not long...

Well, Miss Karen, you've done it again.  I waited until midnight on your birthday so that I could share the fudge bars Skip brought home, but once midnight came along, I figured your East Coast birthday was over and that you weren't going to show up.  So if I can't sleep tonight from all that caffeine in the chocolate, I'll know who to blame and it ain't Jose.

Uh-oh, you may have dreams about DRs MusicGuy and  Jose frollicking atop a giant fudge bar with DR Jason looking aghast or agape or something like that as he realizes they are way over the daily point total -- hey, wait a minute that is too similar to that Baked Alaska dream, so never mind....

But you will need to let us know tomorrow if you have any wild dreams from eating all MY fudge so late at night ... If I were mean and spiteful and catty and cruel,  I'd say you deserve a tummy ache, but you'd NEVER hear that from me... :-*

Next came another MOONLIGHTING episode. In this one, a painter who seems to have been fixated on Maddie is found dead after painting a very lifelike picture of Maddie. This was another good mystery with some really nicely placed surprises.

One of my great crushes John Calvin was a guest star.

MattH, I am jealous...

I would love to see Moonlighting again.

DR Tomovoz, I am glad to see you are hooked on moving into the area of Arabic pop music! It really swings!

My work here is done.

I have a tape of middle eastern inspired music I would love to convert to CD and it is called "Voice of the Turtle". Intriguing music. I have had the tape for years and made a copy of the tape so I could keep the one copy in good condition.

I would love to stay and play, but my birthday was so full of fun and adventure that I'm about to fall asleep at the keyboard ...

THANKS again for all the wonderful birthday wishes -- oh, what a nice birthday present from you, Mr. P, to see you back posting on HHW on July 20th!

Well kids, don't know why I stayed up so late, definitely  not to go to the bookstore.  I'm going to pack it in and get some sleep. Lots to do tomorrow.

Lovely evening tonight here in Fargo, DBF and I went downtown to the street fair and I purchased a hand-tooled leather belt at a very reasonable price and it is very nice quality.

We walked around a bit and looked at some of the other vendors and watched a street performer juggling with glass balls. He was very good. As DBF would say, he would pick him any day over Boy Shakira on America's Got Talent.

The then roamed to the Dempsey's Pub and listened to Poitin rock the pub and they were quite good. WE stayed until the smoke started to bother my sinuses and then headed back.

Hmm... I hesitate to think what that would do to DR JRand's Dream-O-Matic 5000.

Oh, poo, I guess I just missed Miss Karen.  Well, I guess I'll have to keep these flowers for myself and get her some when she's in NYC, assuming it's still her birthday then, that is.

May I share some juvenalia with you department:

I wrote my first musical when I was probably 9 or 10.    My 10 year old lyric:

Always tomorrow
There's always the next day
To think of your problems
And then try to solve them
Yes, tomorrow never comes
It turns into today
And when today arrives, just turn away

Scarlett's song from your GWTW?

The Harry Potter partying that I will be involved in will consist of parking the car, getting a cup of coffee, and waiting until DR Sandra's number comes up so she can get her book, and then coming home. And going to bed.

It could be worse, like:

"Mom, where are the car keys?"
