Well, you've read the notes, the notes had a full report, and now it is time for you to post until the cows come home - they ate some bad grass and now they're having a full report, if you get my meaning.

'Cmon Arnold - the choice is easy:

School days, school days,
Dear old golden rule days.
'Readin' and 'ritin' and 'rithmetic,
Taught to the tune of a hick'ry stick.
You were my queen in calico,
I was your bashful barefoot beau,
And you wrote on my slate,

Good morning, all!  I had a wonderful dinner with Rob Berman at the Film Center Cafe.  We met at 6:15 and the ambience of the place was wonderful.  At some point around 6:30 or 7, they lowered the lights in the romm and turned up the volume of the recorded sound, which was quite unseemly and rude to the diners trying to converse.  We also had an over-perky waitress who kept popping up like the proverbial bad penny to ask if things were okay.  I wanted to slug her.

I got home to discover that the hot water faucet in my bathrom sink is broken. I was able to turn off the hot water before the sink flooded, but now I need a plumber. Until this is resolved the hot water in my apartment is turned off and I am not happy at all about the situation.  Filling a bathtub in fits and spurts is not my idea of a fun way to awake in the morning.

First thing, dealing with the super, next thing, dealing with the party thrower David Monn to learn why after five weeks the copyists  and I still haven't been paid for the Plaza Hotel gig.

DR elmore - I hate (yes, that's too strong a word) it when the Film Center Cafe goes into "hip" mode.  But I guess that goes with their not-so-recent remodeling.  In any case, glad to hear that you and Rob had a swell time - and it looks like I will be seeing him tomorrow too since I'll be playing for some casting sessions for American In Paris.

In answer to your query, DR Cillaliz, DR Jose was absolutely right. I have stacks of DVDs sitting here that I haven't gotten to, so if the writers' strike prolongs itself so that shows use up all their unaired episodes, I'll just switch over to these DVDs I have sitting here. I will never have a lack of things to watch.

re: your questions about DESPERATE HOUSEWIVES not TIVOing or DVRing.

I wonder if your system works the same as mine. When you selected the show to record every week. Did you select "same time, same day". Because on my system if you do that then it will only record if it is from 9pm to 10Pm. This week they changed it to end at 10:01pm.  So on my system you have to select (record at all times, all days) for it to work.

Also on my system there is a way to double check if it will record (you go to the program menu and see if it is lit up in red).

RE: last night's DANCING WITH THE STARS.

I will be so curious to see who is B2 this week.  I am guessing Cameron and Jennie Garth.  But it is so hard to predict.

I actually loved a bunch of performances last night.

Surprisingly (i have been very hard on marie osmond). But i thought her first number was incredible (how much weight has she lost, she looks good).  I also really liked cameron's 2nd number (jive).

I still like helio and julianne best.

I thought marie's 2nd number was the weakest of the night.

I loved loved loved Mel's 2nd number (in that hot black outfit). But didn't really like the first. She is really a good dancer, and probably should not have been on the show (since it does not seem like it takes much effort for her to learn the dances or do well).

I think jane was probably the weakest last night.

And i just can't believe how good marie was in that first number.

DR Cillaliz, i'm just catching up on yesterday's posts and just saw your question re: TAR.

Yes i said that i saw a commercial that touted this season as having no non-eliminations.  And that article from the producers also said the same thing.

My sister (like you) reacted when she heard phil say that there would be 8 eliminations (11 legs).

This is what i think he meant:

A non-elimination round is a round where you get to a pit stop and phil says that you are the last to arrive and you get a penalty, lose your clothes, money ...

There have been things (like the first hour of the last show) which are To Be Continued. This means you get to a pit stop and find out you are still racing.

So i believe there might be 2 of those plus the final show.

Or they'll realize that you're EXACTLY who they need!!

Busy, busy, busy (that's 3 busies, count 'em, 3) morning here in the office.

Too busy...and frustrating.  Very, very, very (that's 3 veries, count 'em, 3) frustrating to have to "wait, wait, wait" (ditto) for someone else to provide information while you sit spinning your wheels getting nowhere until some final piece can be fitted into a puzzle.

Sigh.

I enjoyed "Chuck" last night.  I'm afraid I can't recall too much about "Heroes" as I was nodding off throughout the show.  Just tuckered, I guess.  I went to bed at 10 p.m.  Had to record "Journeyman" and WISH I had also recorded "Heroes"  (which I remember "some" of...but I probably missed the last 20 minutes).

I really liked last night’s show.

But here are some of my favorite parts:

Watching Hiro learn his father was dead. :(

Kensei as Adam Monroe in the present (awesome!)

Matt's dreams and molly. And especially matt trapping his father in his nightmare.

Hiro and ando together again. Yeah!

Poor caitlin trapped in the future. :(

Loved Mama petrelli helping peter remember.

I've never had any trouble with shows running longer.  The on-screen guide has shown the actual length of the show and it has (up until now) recorded everything.  I HOPE that this is just a one-time goober.

DR DakotaCelt i'm curious if the info you provided yesterday re: the soaps and the strike will end up being true (you seemed to think they could be on the air for 1-2 months).

I have heard a few reports (last night) that soaps would be the first to go (next week).

The one i am interested in is Y&R. If you get any info please post it. Thanks for your help.

Jennifer

I will do my best to answer your question.. I was chatting with a good friend who sent me an 10 page letter about different things but basically on what goes on in writing.

A well written soap has a story arc there there is a main central story and smaller stories spinning off from it. The story ideas are often presented 6 months to a year in advance to plan for writing, casting and for production purposes.

Once the story is pitched and approved the writers begin to craft the tale they want to tell and flesh out the scripts for the characters. At the same time specs are given out to the director, costuming, casting and lighting to develop the story's need from their perspective. Normally they want the height of the story to hit around the time of the sweeps or near that time.  They are normally pitched two or three times a year.

Some writers will allow the actors leeway into fleshing out  the character and some will not.

Many of the scripts are written several weeks in advance to fine tune planning by the directors and in casting and costuming.  Casting calls for day characters and extras often go out at this point.

Since some of the shows have not pitched new story arcs to start they will be in more trouble than others. Several of the show have scripts stockpiled and they are ready to be filmed until late December and early January. However they will be filmed as written with no revisions. The only exception to new writing would be those who cross the pickets or the shows bring in freelance writers.

Right now you are seeing episodes that were taped in mid October. The shows film 10 to 15 days in advance of airing dates in the United States. However in parts of Canada, the sony distributed soaps, YR and DAYS are broadcast the day before they are broadcast in the US.

It is going to boil down who laid in the best contingency plan after the first of the year. Some soaps have enough written or arcs at least in the works that they go can go with using scabs or free lancers. They are at the moment in good shape until January. Guiding light is the only soap that has scripts going well into January.   ATWT is not far behind.  The one in possibly the biggest trouble are the LA based soaps.

My friend Marsha is 60 years old and will be retiring in January.  She has some money to invest, and I suggested Mutual Funds.  She would like some  income, but that is not her initial concern.

How would she invest in a Mutual Fund?  Couldn't her bank help her.  And what is the best one.....  I have been with Kinetics Family for a few years....but it's done through the family Corporation so I don't know how to do it as an individual....

Low cost index funds.  A bank would likely charge her a load or high fees.  What asset allocation she uses depends on a number of factors, such as her lifestyle, risk tolerance, size of her portfolio, etc.  She has to find the right balance between capital preservation (let's face it, the market does have occasional and sometimes prolonged downturns) and capital appreciation (so that inflation doesn't eat away her life savings).

Is her savings currently in a tax-sheltered account, like a 401(k) or an IRA?  Does she have any other income besides Social Security, like a pension?  Does she have any liabilities, like a mortgage?  When will she need to tap into her investments for income?  As you can see, without getting a fuller picture of her circumstances, it's difficult to give her advice that will meet her long-term needs.

I'd suggest that she visit the Vanguard, T Rowe Price or Fidelity sites and fool around with their online retirement calculators.  From there, she can get an idea of how she should be allocating her money (stocks, bonds REITs, cash).

I watched another episode of BONES today while I was preparing and eating lunch. DEXTER just isn't the type of show I want to watch while eating.

The BONES episode was the one that introduced Ryan O'Neal as Temperance's father.

After that, I put in THE AVIATOR on Blu-ray. Though the chronology is all messed up in dealing with the Hollywood section of the film regarding Hepburn and Hughes (and I still say Cate Blanchette, while sounding like and with the demeanor of Hepburn, isn't nearly as beautiful as Hepburn was in the 1930s), all of the parts of the film with Hughes as an aviator was priceless, commanding, riveting.

The two color looks for the film - the Kodacolor look of the first 50 minutes followed by the more natural but deeply saturated look of the rest - are beautifully captured on Blu-ray disc. Yes, it's more detailed and three dimensional than the SD-DVD, but only a half step up or so from it (rather like the improvement I saw in WYATT EARP from SD to HD).

I still have about 40 more minutes of THE AVIATOR to go when I go back downstairs. I am just at the point when Hughes has to face the Senate hearing opposite Alan Alda as Senator Brewster, one of my favorite moments in the film.

After the lunch and dishing, I headed back over to Macy's.  I needed some new workout clothes, and I went ahead and picked up a new winter jacket since there was some crazy sale going on today.  The jacket I got was marked at $240.00, but I ended up getting it for $88.90.  Not a bad deal at all.  :)

Even when I set up a "season pass" on my DVR to record every episode of a series, I ask it to add a minute to the beginning and end, just to be safe.  But I don't think it listens to me...

I don't know that mine allows that kind of specificity.  I tell it to record a "program"...either a one-time thing or, in the case of one show, all new episodes.  It seems to be at the mercy of programming (i.e, 10-11 a.m., or whatever the "block" is that the program appears in).  When shows end one or two minutes after the hour, I don't get those one or two minutes.  And if I'm recording shows back to back, I often miss the first 10-20 seconds of the second show.

A box from Jessica's Biscuit arrived today.

As a result, along with a book about someone named Hofstetter, I now have waiting on my nightstand:

The Automat: The History, Recipes, and Allure of Horn & Hardart's Masterpiece, by Lorraine B Diehl and Marianne Hardart.  Title pretty much sums things up.

The Four Seasons: A History of America's Premier Restaurant, by John Mariani with Alex von Bidder.  At the intersection of James Beard, Craig Claiborne, and the Seagrams Building.

With the Grain, by Raymond Sokolov.  About wheat, corn, rice, oats, barley... Sokolov is a witty writer, so this should be interesting, not starchy at all.

Fragrant Harbour Taste: The New Chinese Cooking of Hong Kong, by Kenneth Hom.  Again, the title pretty much says it.

James McNair's Favorites.  McNair has been writing cookbooks for a long time, and has a good rep.  He named the book after himself.  Some people are like that.

The Way We Are, by Margaret Visser.  A collection of essays by a self-described "anthropologist of everyday life."  Does anyone who writes books lack an ego?  Or a knack for self-promotion?

Fruitcakes & Couch Potatoes... and other delicious expressions, by Christine Ammer.  She's a lexicographer, the book is about words and food.  A trifle.  In both senses of the word.  Just for fun.

And, finally, Food, by Ogden Nash.

Well, that's what was ordered.  It's not what they sent.

Instead, what arrived was Food: The History of Taste, edited by Paul Freedman.

Food, by Ogden Nash, runs about 78 pages.  I was intending to give it to the younger grandlad.

Food, edited by Paul Freedman, runs about 368 pages, and is intended as a history of the connections between food and culture.  It's not something I would give to either grandlad.

It turns out that the release date for Food, edited by Paul Freedman, is November 6, 2007.  Food, by Ogden Nash, has been around for some time (just as poor Ogden Nash hasn't been around for a while).  So I can understand the mix-up - why wouldn't someone ordering a book want the one that is just being released?  And the Freedman does look interesting.

Still, it means we've got to go back and re-order the Ogden Nash, if we're going to have it on time as a Christmas gift.

And in any case, the Hofstetter has the priority position in my reading stack.

I swear the thing is going to give me a heart attack. ;D It sits quietly on the counter, not far from where I am sitting at the computer, and periodically begins to make noises all on its own.  I practically jump out of my seat & go through contortions trying to shut it up.

I was intrigued by DR SWW's mention of the Horn & Hardart  book.  In researching at Amazon, I see that someone has provided what they claim is a more authentic recipe for Horn & Hardart's classic mac & cheese than the one in the book:

MACARONI AND CHEESE

1lb. Ziti Rigati
1/8 tsp. Red Pepper
6Tbs. Flour
1/8 tsp. White Pepper
6 Tbs. Butter
4Tbs. Light Cream
6 C. Milk
3C. Grated Sharp Cheddar Cheese
2 tsp. Salt
1 C. Crushed Tomatoes
2 tsp. Sugar

Boil ziti until barely cooked. Drain and set aside.

In a medium saucepan, melt the butter over low heat, blend in flour and cook 2 minutes.

Beat in the milk, then the cream and cook over medium heat, stirring constantly, until the mixture comes to a boil and thickens. Remove from heat and cool slightly.

Stir in the cheese until melted, then add the tomatoes, salt, sugar and two peppers.

Add cheese mixture to the ziti.

Pour into a baking pan and bake in a preheated 400* oven until top browns and bubbles.

**To Freeze: Pour into aluminum pans, seal and place in freezer. DO NOT BAKE BEFORE FREEZING.

**To Bake Frozen Macaroni and Cheese: Allow to defrost before baking. Uncover and place in 400* oven and bake until top is brown and bubbling.

I'm listening to the recording of Anna Karenina with Melissa Errico as Anna.  I went to the Internet Broadway Database for this show (http://www.ibdb.com/production.asp?id=4692) and I didn't realize that Gregg Edelman, who sings the role of Constantin Levin, actually played the part in the Broadway production!  That's pretty cool!  Also, Melissa was in that same production, but she played the role of Kitty (who is sung by Kerry Butler on this recording) and understudied Anna.  The other people on this recording are Brian d'Arcy James (calling MBarnum!), Jeff McCarthy and Marc Kudisch.  All are very good.  And I'm actually enjoying this CD. :)

I was intrigued by DR SWW's mention of the Horn & Hardart  book.  In researching at Amazon, I see that someone has provided what they claim is a more authentic recipe for Horn & Hardart's classic mac & cheese than the one in the book:

the recipe looks good.  i'm curious what the diff is between this & the book.  it is possible the recipe evolved over time.

My mom and I had the same reaction about Marie

Zach is a very good boy.  i'm not positive Sherlock has outgrown his interest in my books.  to be on the safe side i try not to leave them in his face, otherwise he is very good, only chewing on his own toys.  sometimes he takes a shoe to one of his beds, just for the fun of it, not to chew on it. :)

the recipe looks good.  i'm curious what the diff is between this & the book.  it is possible the recipe evolved over time.
That's it, make me cheat and go into the books out of order!

Baked Macaroni and Cheese

1/4 pound rigatoni macaroni
2 T unsalted butter, plus more for greasing pan
1 1/2 T all-purpose flour
1/4 t salt
1/4 t freshly ground white pepper
1 1/2 c milk
1/2 lb charp Cheddar cheese, cut into 1/4-inch cubes
1/2 t Worcestershire sauce

Cook macaroni accoring to package instructions, drain.

Preheat oven to 375 degrees.

In a 1-quart saucepan, melt butter over low heat.  With a wire whisk, mix in the flour, salt, & pepper.  Cook 1 to 2 minutes, or until a smooth mixture forms.   Continue to whisk and gradually add the milk; cook about 5 min., until the mixture is thick and smooth.  Remove from heat.

In a large mixing bowl, combiine the cooked macaroni with the sauce, cheese, & Worcestershire sauce.  Pour into a buttered 8x8x2 pan and bake for 25 min., or until the top browns.

It was another very busy day at work. I really love it when it's busy but not manic or chaotic  I had one of those good days.  I am also very glad I cancelled my trip to Iowa City on Thursday. It would have been fun to be on a career panel for law students, but I didn't want to leave when Cal was sick. She's better, but I didn't know that when I thought it was time to cancel.  In the meantime I've scheduled 2 court hearings and an appointment that day.

Ziti?  Red pepper?  Light cream?  Grated Cheddar?  CRUSHED TOMATOES?  SUGAR?

And NO WORCESTERSHIRE SAUCE???

Of course, while the dish may have evolved over time, there's also the possibility that someone posted their own fave recipe.

(Oooh, that sounded snarky, didn't it!   ;D)

i don't use sugar or worcestershire sauce, sugar seems a bit sweet.  i also make mine with flour and use a combination of milk & sour cream.  i prefer colby jack to all cheddar.

it freezes very well & you can put it in smaller containers to use as a side dish.  if i haven't planned ahead i find partially cooking it in the microwave before baking is ok.

Der Brucer...and any other pols out there. This is a fun article about Iowa and the candidates http://www.newsweek.com/id/67930 (http://www.newsweek.com/id/67930) It's from Newsweek. The first paragraph is priceless and so true

Quote
Iowans are nice, maybe too nice. Late last month, NEWSWEEK political blogger Andrew Romano followed Democratic candidate John Edwards into the Depot restaurant in Shenandoah, Iowa (home of the Everly Brothers), and saw a woman wearing an Edwards button. Are you a supporter? the reporter inquired. "That's just today," she responded. "Joe Biden was here earlier this week and I was wearing his buttons." So, Romano asked, it's between Biden and Edwards for you? "No, no, no," she said, shaking her head at the re-porter's innocence. "This is Iowa. I've even worn a Romney sticker."

I have to laugh, I've worn an Obama sticker at an Obama event, an Edwards sticker at an Edwards event a Richardson sticker at a Richardson event and a Biden button at a Biden event... It really doesn't mean a thing

I despised all of those MAN FROM UNCLE compilation films. They were SUCH cheats! Advertised as if they were UNCLE movies, we unknowingly paid good money to see one only to find out we had seen them already on TV, episodes strung together as if they were films (and badly done at that). And WEIRD slow-mo every time a credit came on-screen.

I saw those being shown on TCM today and just gritted my teeth remembering how outraged we were at the time.

I'm back and still reeling from the beautiful, moving, elegiac production of CYMBELINE at the Beaumont.  It was a play I had never seen nor read and it's a phantasmagoria of fairy tale and mythology, other Shakepeare plays, and British history. Imogen runs away to the Forest of Arden - actually it's called Milford Haven - to find her destiny after losing her husband because of the lies of Iago - actually Iachimo - and like the story of Snow White, the guide leading her is supposed to kill her. Instead he sends her off with poison from the wicked queen - he thinks it's a panacea - to the forest where finds shelter with a kind old man and his two sons who are actually her brothers.  Finding happiness she takes the poison thinking it will heal her and  she dies, to live again in a conciliatory ending preceded a visit from family ghosts and Jupiter himself bearing an oracle. Everyone is forgiven but the wicked queen and her rapacious son. The ending was guiet and quite moving.

I loved the cast, especially Martha Plimpton and John Pankow, but Jonathan Cake and Michael Cerveris were equally wonderful, and everyone had great moments. The production by Mark Lamos was so fluid and clear I had no problem following the convolutions of the tale, and I loved the incidental music, especially the unintentional diet of "Hark, Hark, the Lark." Absolutely beautiful production.

I'll be curious to see what DR Ben thought.

Good Evening!

Alas, I did not see Cymbeline tonight.  Instead, I saw Rent.  Or at least what they're calling Rent nowadays.  I mean, it's at the Nederlander on 41st Street.  The set is the same one that was there a couple of years ago.  The costumes are more or less the same.  There's a band.  There's lighting.  But that's where the similarities end.

I went in expecting to be disappointed, and, unfortunately, I left the theatre a bit more disheartened than I had planned for.  The show is just not in good shape right now.  The casting - well, the cast... well, some of the cast just have no idea how to project nor how to enunciate.  -Yes, a mic will "help" you project, but there's only so much the guy at the sound board can do if you're basically whispering most of your talking and singing.  And there was lots of "whispered" acting on stage tonight too.

Surprisingly, there were some muffed and sloppy technical elements.  None of the phone call/answering machine cues went off in the first sequence.  -And the lights were also a bit late too.  I had even started to think that they had reworked the show since the flubs were so consistent.

Etc., etc., etc.

Of course, there were the usual screamers in the audience.  And the people texting each other on their cellphones and Blackberries.  And the husband who would fill in the blanks for his wife after each time she returned from the bathroom - or wherever she went - she left three(!) times in the first act!!!  However, thankfully, and mercifully, no one sang along.  At least not in my earshot.

I have always liked the show, but also acknowledged some of its problems and pecadillos.  However, when I first saw the show during the second of third years of it's run on Broadway - the second cast had just started - I remember being enveloped in this Bohemian world, and just allowed myself to be taken on the journey.  Tonight, I just sat there wondering what the hell went wrong, and how would anyone let this happen.  If "they" want to continue to honor the memory of Jonathan Larson, the best thing to do would be to close show.  Tomorrow.

My bedroom window is not back yet.  Apparently, the silicone sealant needs a couple more hours to set up before it's placed back in the window.  -I got that message as I was heading into the theatre.  Right now, the black plastic trash bags are still in my window, as well as some moving blanket and a piece of plywood.  Needless to say, I am not a happy camper right now.

OH!!!

And when I asked the landlord about why the radiators seemed to go on at weird times and seemed to be set too high...

It was 86 degrees last night in the living room.
-So, your radiators do work then.
Yes, they work.  I never said they did not work.
-Well, it must be just your room then.  I'll have to call the radiator guys tomorrow to come look at it.
NO!  The radiators are working fine.  They're just giving off too much heat.  And they're not on overnight when it's coldest.
-Well, they are on a timer, and they're also controlled by the thermostat.
What? You told us last year they were NOT on a timer.
-Well, the thermostat will tell the radiators to go at the set times if it's too cold.
Oh... Well, then they need to be reset to come on during the night, and not just at 8:00am and 8:00pm.
-Well, I'll have the radiator guys look at it again.  Maybe it needs to be reset.  Then maybe that will fix the extra heat.
No.  I think the radiator is just set too high.
-Well, I the thermostat is on the third floor of the building (out of five), and I have it set to 78 degrees.
WHAT?!?!?!  That's too hot.
-Really?
YES!  That's why we keep saying we have to keep our windows open.  But if keep our windows open, and then the heat goes off overnight, then we wake up cold.
-Well, I think it must be just your units then.
NOOOOOOOOOOOOO!

-That's when I hung up.

And then when I was in Virgin after the show...

I was at the register, when one of the clerks came running... "There's a woman who's fainted, fell down over there.  I think she's unconscious."  -Well, call 911.  "I don't want to call 911.  Why do I have to call 911?!?!"  Well, she looks bad, right. "Yep, but I'm not sure what I have to tell 911."  Call them.  "No, you call them."  Have you called a manager yet? "No." Well, call them and they can call 911.  "But what do I tell them?"  Tell them some woman has a medical emergency.  "OK... So I should tell them she had a seizure, and they her friend said she was a diabetic too."  -Yeah.  I think so....

-That's when I headed over to the area where the lady was... Thankfully(?), store security was there.  Alas, they were all standing around not having a clue what to do.  I asked if someone finally called 911.  Two other people in the crowd said they had just called.  There were even people offering to look after the lady before the ambulance arrived, but the security guard kept telling people to go away since the ambulances had already been called.  I told her that I've dealt with diabetics before... I asked her if her friend knew what type of diabetes she had... Then I saw some other security guard from the building going to toward the woman who was laying on the ground... Then he walked right by her....

That's when I ran to the front of the store - where more security people were just standing there with "What they fuck do we do?" looks on their faces...  I TOLD one guy to call up to the DJ booth, and ask them to turn down or turn off the music - and maybe even page the store for any medical personnel...  "What for?"...  Then I saw three(!) ambulances pull up... And that's when I left the store.  Disgusted.

Needless to say, since I'll be working a Equity tomorrow, I'm pretty sure I'm going to go back to Virgin during my lunch break and speak to a manager in person.  The behavior and attitude of the store personnel tonight was careless, unprepared, and, frankly, life-threatening.

*And if I'm remembering my workplace rules/laws correctly, someone on staff should have at least been trained in CPR - and should have been the first or second person called during a medical emergency.

OK.  Four rants.  That's enough for now.

Aww... I just got this e-mail from my brother, Jay.  The timing could not have been more perfect...

All,

For once I felt like writing a long, mass email about something...  I felt like writing ALOT, too.  Also, I know that some of you hope to run NYC in the near future.  So, here my NYC Marathon 2007 report.

SUMMARY: My NYC Marathon 2007 was an awesome experience!!!  Although I've had 2 better times, it was definitely my 2nd best managed run of the 6 marathons I've done, but only my 3rd best time @ 4:17:22.  I couldn't have run much faster based on how far back I started and my pacing was pretty consistent throughout.  There were definitely some sneaky, sneaky hills throughout.  Also, based on my new philosophy for marathoning training - "less is more" - I won't complain one bit.  I may not be back anytime soon, but I feel very fortunate to have received a lottery entry on my 1st try and run this past Sunday.  I won't go into the benefits I've felt from embracing Chi running or Hellerwork unless you ask.

RACE MORNING: Waking up at 4:45 AM for a 10:00 AM start was definitely a new and different experience. The week before I left, this was all I could think about and I was quite panic'd that I would plan incorrectly, especially the night before I left for NYC.  However, race morning went well.  I met my friend Alma from SD at the Subway in Lower Manhattan at 5:30 AM.  Then, waited for the subway, hopped on the subway for 2 or 3 stops, boarded a shuttle bus to the Staten Island Ferry terminal, rode the Staten Island Ferry for 30 mins or so, rode another shuttle bus to start area, lastly, a short walk to our designated starting area 3 hours before start time, along with 39,000 plus other people and countless volunteers.  Needless to say, people were everywhere. Some sleeping on grass (one full size air mattress with a tarp covering a runner or two), others just chillin, some eating, some using the more than ample porta-potties, some speaking French, Spanish, Swedish, etc.  After seeing some other SD folks in another start area (Joe, Arlene and James) and grabbing a bagel with a hot beverage, I spread out my Disney Half shock blanket on the concrete and we just chilled while sipping on water and Gatorade.  Rather quickly it was time to put on my throw away clothes and check my bag which was a mess because everyone waited till the last minute to check their bags.

THE START: As the sun shined and the corrals were gathered to begin the shuffle towards the starting line, all the throw away clothes were thrown all over the place.  I almost wished I had brought other old clothes just to dump them at the start area for charity.  I started with 32,000 to 32,999 group with my friend Alma.  My number was 26028.  So, what's another 5,000 people...  We were moving to the start and still about 10 mins from the start when we saw the Verazzano bridge already PACKED, I mean PACKED, with runners.  The start for the Blue course was 10:10 AM and we didn't get across the start till 10:30 AM. Then, we were off.

THE RACE: After a quick "goodbye" to Staten Little, we jumped on the Verazzon Bridge.  Unfortunately, a trash bag tripped up another runner to start her race.  The sound of the fall wasn't pretty, but her friends got her going again.  Then, it was time to weave.  Little did I know that I would waste alot of energy and time weaving in and out of some of the 32,000 people who started in front of me for the entire race.  There were some 5K sections between mile 7 to 15 where I thought I was easily sub 9:00 mins per mile, but stayed in the 9:30 range.  Brooklyn was awesome and really welcomed the runners.  Sometime between mile 7 and 8, I lost Alma at an aid station.  Queens was OK, but the crowds thinned during the last portion through there.  The Queensboro bridge with the slight uphill gradient at mile 15 was tough as advertised.  It was dark, too, on the lower part of the bridge.  NOTE: The last part of Brooklyn and all of Queens would have been two parts of the course where someone could have ran with you.  Then, the first time through Manhattan. The crowd was loud, but the energy was different there because the course was wider which I needed to catch my breath from all the weaving.  However, I saw a long stretch of people in front of me at a higher vantage point.  Mind bubble, "Another F@#$-ing hill!!!

Relax your body...  Steel and Cotton[a Chi running thing]"  Blink, the mile in the Bronx and two bridges were gone.

THE REAL RACE: From the Bronx, Manhattan welcomed me again, but with a louder, more packed crowd and more narrow course with runners fighting the good fight, including myself.  Thankfully, my Rock'N'Roll marathon experience back in June, allowed me to push through the pain.  Central Park is in site and says hello with a crowded hill.  I'm trying to push, but still have to weave in and out of so many people.  Finally, to the top of the hill and mile marker 24 is beautiful. Then, to the South Side of Central Park where I'm looking out for the 800 yards left sign.  Earlier on the course, I had listened to my voice mail from my friend, Neil, who said that's where he was with my girlfriend.  They had missed me at mile 16, but I left them a message earlier.  YES.  I ran with my phone which I stored in my only running shorts with a pocket made for that purpose...  Anyway...  I see the 800 yards left sign and then see Maria and Neil cheering me on and trying to snap a picture.  Now, I can't wait to see the finish line, but then at the 400 yards left sign I see the short climb to the finish.  I remembered from past races to enjoy the finish and look around at the crowd.  "300 YARDS." "200 YARDS." "100 YARDS."  AWESOME!!  (BIG SMILE ON FACE)  "FINISH" the signs read.  So, I stop on the timing mat with my hat off to make sure I get my finish line picture (as
usual).

POST RACE HERDING: SWEET!!  I get a NYC Marathon Finisher Medal!!!  Next a shock blanket is wrapped around me, then its taped in the front with a sticker to keep it around me.  Then, a small bag with a little food and water.  What else could you expect for 38,000 plus finishers in such a small space...  The herding begins...  I thought the course was crowded...  The standard post race carnage.  My back and feet hurt the most.  The finish line for NYC is on 67th at the Tavern on the Green.  My baggage check truck was #58 which turns out to be up the hill around 82nd St. Finally, I get to exit my part of the finish area at 86th Street.  Ouch all over as I tighten up.

Down the hill I stammer to meet my gal, Maria who I can't hear calling out my name, my good friend, Neil, and my oldest bro Jose who lives in NYC.  AWESOME!!!

SUMMARY: The NYC Marathon is as advertised.  Its not a PR course.  The little hills will test you.  The crowd on and off the course are crazy.  The start of race day is really, really f-ing early.  The Central Park Finish is perfect.  New York City is unlike any other place.  The NYC Marathon is unlike any other marathon.
ASTERISK: Congrats Alma on your PR in NYC!!

SELF PROMOTION: I'm thankful to have had a great running year, great year in general, and am blessed to have stayed healthy through 2 Fulls, 4 Halfs, a 10K, my first Tri (all between April 22nd and Nov. 4th) with PRs at every distance (3:57:04 full; 1:48:15 half; 45:20 10K; 1st Sprint Tri).

!!THANK YOU!!  Thanks to all of you for being part of my 2007 event and training year which is done.  There will be no Turkey Trot and no Christmas/Holiday run.
2008...

Take care and happy running, swimming and/or biking to all.

-Jay

Is it a pop opera? Through-sung? Curious if I need to add it to my Christmas list.

Matt, I think it's a book musical.  The CD is only about 56 minutes long.  Comparing the CD track list (http://www.amazon.com/Anna-Karenina-Broadway-Dan-Levine/dp/B000T4SX1A/ref=sr_1_1/104-6068906-3275934?ie=UTF8&s=music&qid=1194422649&sr=1-1) with the songs according to IBDB (http://www.ibdb.com/production.asp?ID=4692), it seems pretty much like it's the whole score.
