Well, you've read the notes, the notes saw the man, and now it is time for you to post until the cows come home - they're currently involved in a 211.

Good morning, all!

My day is slowly beginning to shape up: a trip to Encores! to drop off some things for Joshie, and then a perambulation to the Lincoln Center NYPL for some time on the Historic Newspapers Online.

Outside of that, I have nothing to report. After yesterday's tsuris, it appears to be quiet. And after the huge gin and tonic I had last night, my neighbor could have had a football team in cleats walking around and I would have heard nothing.   Next week, I believe he  will be in Canada for Passover, so maybe I'll break in and redo his apartment.

Yes I think MR BK should of course go with his strongest feeling about Mr Villanch's efforts....but I also must say that I DO buy some books "cold" - and if I didn't know MR BK from MR ADAM and was looking at the books, and I happened to see that Mr Villanch - who does have somewhat of a name & reputation - took the time to read and talk about the book, I might more strongly consider buying it.
Having another well-known name on the cover is worth something....sometimes worth even more than what is said.  But then again, there are those here and elsewhere who do NOT like the blurb....so MR BK must make a decision....

TOD

Hmmmmmmmmmmm.......

My first choice would be I LOVE LUCY....but not with the Lucille Ball of LIFE WITH LUCY....oh my.

My second choice would be STARSKY & HUTCH, being done today with more of the grit and realism of LAW & ORDER.

And last, but maybe first.....PERRY MASON.

Good morning, all.

TOD: There are a few possibilities, including "Perry Mason" and "Wodehouse Playhouse," but in the end, the one should would have to be "Bosom Buddies." Wendy Jo Sperber was one of the funniest people I've ever seen. I can still see her singing "The Boy From ..." on one episode and laughing hysterically at her performance. Tom Hanks, Peter Scolari, Holland Taylor, Donna Dixon and the rest of the cast were wonderful, even when they started to tinker with the show in the second season.

Regarding a more recent show, I am still hoping there will be an "Arrested Development" movie. That was another perfect cast.

DR Cillaliz did you see DANCING WITH THE STARS last night?  If so what did you think?  Any favorites yet?

To me there were so many stiff ones out there. And another problem i have is if i dislike the pro dancer it sometimes makes me not like the celeb like i would if they were with a pro dancer i liked.

By far the best dancer (and obviously so because of her dance experience) was Nicole.  And since i really like derek i think this will be one of my favorite teams.

The person who i think got shafted by the judges was chad. I actually thought he was very good. He had rhythm. He was much better than i thought he would be.  The only problem i have is 1) for some reason i tend not to love the football players 2) even though i think cheryl is immensely talented i find i almost never cheer on her teams.

Another person who i thought did well was evan. But i really dislike his partner anna.

I thought buzz was obviously the worst. And ashley is also not one of my favorites. But i'm sure he'll last a while.

Pamela anderson was better than i expected. And her partner (the new pro damian) seems like he will be fun.

After they showed Bachelor Jake's clip i thought he was going to be awful. But surprisingly he was quite decent. Although i doubt i will ever vote for him.

I thought that shannen (with mark) and erin (with maks) were both very stiff. Although Mark and Maks are two of my favorite pros. So hopefully both teams will improve.

I thought Niecy (from Reno 911) was bouncy and fun. Although I could see her going out early. I also thought that aiden (with edyta) is probably the least well known. And he was so stiff. So i could see him going early.

I'm not sure what i thought of kate gosselin (with tony). I don't dislike her the way some people do.  She really has no performing experience at all. So that is a huge disadvantage. Because all of the others are either professional athletes or actors/performers. So considering that i guess she did as expected. She will probably be quite popular. So i guess she'll be around for a while.

The UPS truck stopped by a few minutes ago to deliver THE FANTASTIC MR. FOX on Blu-ray, so that will be my work project for the day. It's not a long movie (88 minutes), but there appear to be a fair number of bonus features. Don't know if I can finish them all this afternoon, but I'll sure try!

With some of my favorite shows in reruns tonight (NCIS), I still have new editions of LOST, SOUTHLAND, and IDOL which I'll stay with for another few weeks, I guess. I can get through the show quickly by just listening to the singers and the judges' comments and skipping everything else.

I was going to say ADAM-12, but we do have that now in the form of SOUTHLAND. It really is the ADAM-12 of 2009-2010.

And speaking of SOUTHLAND, if you are on Facebook, and are a fan of SOUTHLAND, you may find interest in joining SOUTHLAND's facebook page. One of the stars of that show, Michael Cudlitz, is doing a weekly question and answer which is very interesting.

Cudlitz even brought up the fact that Southland is very reminiscent of ADAM-12.

BK, I am on the side of keeping the Vilanch blurb.

Having his name on your book is not a negative, that is for sure.

Your book will be in the entertainment section of any bookstore, as JMK said. People perusing the entertainment section of a bookstore are very likely to know the name Bruce Vilanch.

As for blurbs, how many people actually put much stock in them when buying a book. No one is going to have a negative blurb on a book. What gets me to buy a book is the info on either the back cover or the inside jacket. This is where you will catch my interest. The blurbs are just an extra.

Put yourself in the mind of a bookstore browser and go from there. Does a blurb make you buy or not buy a book? Is that the first thing you look at? Do you even look at the blurbs?

I also think people are over analyzing and/or stressing WAY too much about the Vilanch blurb.  It's not your typical "fawning" blurb, which is what makes it so funny.  I think Vilanch is better known than Pogue gives him credit for being.  If MBarnum knows who he is, chances are the rest of Salem does, too (in a metaphorical sense).  ;)

The Nippon Girls are like a trip down memory lane--the lane of long forgotten 60's and 70's US hits which the Girls just slightly tweak in their own "originals".  Many of their tunes sound like themes to 60's tv shows (which is part of their appeal to MBarnum, I imagine), including SECRET AGENT and, believe it or don't, THE MUNSTERS.  One of their other tunes could be the little sister of Cher's GYPSIES, TRAMPS and THIEVES--exact same middle eight, it's really quite amusing.

I'm up, got a pretty good sleep, and have spent the last thirty minutes cleaning off my plate for the day (answering e-mails, etc) and now it's on to reading/proofing.  Vilanch did just e me and say the change I want to make is fine, so I'm still pondering.

I do look at blurbs.  And often I will see an author i recognize saying they like the book.  IT gives the book more credibility.  I think having a well known name writing a blurb makes a difference.

Beautiful weather for my Aunt Betty.  Nice crowd....and lots of relatives to see and talk to.

Two of my brothers and I, cousin Daryl and his sister's son Kyle, and the husband of one of Aunt Betty's grand daughters were the pall bearers.  I ended up in front with my brother Kent leaving the chapel, so I stood next to the hearse when we got to the cemetery, and it seems we had to back up and turn around, so I ended up in front again on the way to the plot.

Uncle Al and Aunt Betty attended Lakeview Baptist Church for years and years.  Al was the maintenance man and also did construction projects at the LARGE church.  Betty worked in the Day Care and both did a lot of mission work.  They lived in a small house on the property and so were also 24 hour security.

About 20 years ago, the NEW minister came to them and told them while their work would continue, they were to move out of the small house because his son, the new youth minister was going to live there.

Betty and Al moved out of the house and out of the Lakeview Baptist Church congregation.  Although there were many who would ask them to come back and at least attend - and the new minister and his son were gone within 3 years - Betty and Al never joined or attended another church.

They visited the current Lakeview minister about a year ago, when Aunt Betty knew that her illness was terminal, and made arrangements ($$$) for him to speak at her memorial, which he did.  It was nice, although at the cemetery he called her Betty Smith instead of Betty Johnson (I hope cousin Sue hadn't signed his check yet) -

But it was a beautiful day - and we could visit a lot of my maternal relatives who are already at Sugar Grove, and walk around where one day - no doubt - I will be planted as well.  I hope my day is as beautiful weather wise.

TOD:

I was going to say ADAM-12, but we do have that now in the form of SOUTHLAND. It really is the ADAM-12 of 2009-2010.

And speaking of SOUTHLAND, if you are on Facebook, and are a fan of SOUTHLAND, you may find interest in joining SOUTHLAND's facebook page. One of the stars of that show, Michael Cudlitz, is doing a weekly question and answer which is very interesting.

Cudlitz even brought up the fact that Southland is very reminiscent of ADAM-12.

He has been the show's biggest cheerleader since Day One. I think he's definitely one of the show's strongest assets. I wish it was doing better in the ratings.

I had forgotten about NURSE JACKIE being on last night (My DVR recorded it, but I could have gotten it from Showtime On Demand if I had forgotten. For a change, I didn't). So, that's what I watched when I first went downstairs.

I love the show, and the season premiere didn't disappoint (though I had read some critics who thought it was a dull season premiere). I was drawn into the stories, and Jackie is ALWAYS interesting in all that she does.

While I ate lunch, I watched last night's CASTLE, a maginficent part one of a two part serial killer story. Loved the puzzles, it was also funny and gripping. This was one of the best CASTLE episodes they've ever had.

Then I watched FANTASTIC MR. FOX on Blu-ray. It's a very dry, droll animated film. Taken from the Roald Dahl story (expanded to let the original tale form the centertpiece of the movie with new beginnings and ending), the characters aren't instantly likable, very much like JAMES AND THE GIANT PEACH and its oddly acting characters.

I just couldn't get the image of George Clooney out of my head with his voice being so unmistakable (I had the same problem with Bruce Willis in OVER THE HEDGE: their voices are just too special to separate from the characters, and he doesn't do anything to make it quirky or different or hidden at all.) Meryl Streep's voice is unmistakable, too, but her part is much smaller. Other voices were Bill Murray, Willem Dafoe (a very effective rat), Michael Gambon, and Owen WIlson.

Good Afternoon!

Well...

My niece, Alexandra - with the assistance of my brother/her father ;) - bought me two pairs of shoes.  Alas, they were the wrong size.  So, I went to back to the store to exchange them for the correct size.  Well, of course, there was nothing available in my size in the styles I was exchanging, nor in any other styles I liked.  I left after about an hour and fifteen minutes of trying on pair after pair... Ah, well.

Nothing on ONE LIFE TO LIVE today either. Once my boys are gone from this and AS THE WORLD TURNS is canceled, that's going to completely free up my afternoons from recording anything.

While out on Long Island this weekend I bought more walnuts and I also bought pecans. I thought I would try them in the morning oatmeal. A little cinnamon, some raisins, some pecans and maybe a banana if I'm feeling peckish. Sounds good to me.

DR Ben, I add chopped walnuts and dried cranberries to my Quaker Apple-Cinnamon oatmeal. It's quite yummy.

I just saw the ratings.

DANCING WITH THE STARS had its highest ratings ever for a season premiere.

And that helped CASTLE earn its best ratings ever last night. It even beat, for the very first time, an original episode of CSI: MIAMI which had a first run low for the show.

DR JRand59, I'm glad it was a good day for your Aunt's funeral. My Uncle Bob's was today as well. I've heard nothing yet from my family about the events.

I could have exchanged them easily since I had the receipt with me.  However, he'll need to go back to return them for the refund/credit.

Yes.  At first, I bought them as separate seasons.  A few days after they all arrived, Amazon recommended all three seasons in one box, at considerably less than what I'd paid "per season".   So...back the individual sets went and Amazon was cool with taking them back and sending me the complete series box.

On another issue: I vote for nuts. Somehow a brownie seems lacking in something without the flavor and the contrasting texture that nuts provide. i prefer pecans, but walnuts will do in a pinch. And, if you're making brownies and have plenty of self-will, make up the batter and let it set in the refrigerator overnight. The chocolate flavors will intensify. I learned that trick from Alice Medrich, queen of chocolate.

The last week has been difficult and I haven't been here much because of all of the in-law tending. Greg's dad is now home but his mom is still in the hospital. In a way it was easier when they were in the same hospital because we didn't have to split ourselves up so much. So we've been taking turns dad-sitting and taking him back and forth to the hospital to visit. We hope by the end of the week to have a health care worker check up on him daily and make sure he takes his meds and eats, and my m-i-l will probably go to a facility for re-hab for a few weeks with the goal of getting stronger and coming home. She had been turned down by our two favorite places, but "Christian City" is going to take her, probably tomorrow.

This has been pretty emotionally grueling for everybody and I feel so sad for Greg's dad. They don't have a support group of friends and lead a very isolated life.

Too bad they're not into "social networking"!

I also think people are over analyzing and/or stressing WAY too much about the Vilanch blurb.  It's not your typical "fawning" blurb, which is what makes it so funny.  I think Vilanch is better known than Pogue gives him credit for being.  If MBarnum knows who he is, chances are the rest of Salem does, too (in a metaphorical sense).  ;)

True, but MBarnum also knows who Karishma Kapoor is, and I am not sure the rest of Salem knows her.

Thanks for the tip, not that I think I have the will power to do it. I shall do my best, once I can bake again.  My brownie recipe uses very little flour & is very rich.  It was from Katharine Hepburn.  Years ago she shared it during an interview.  Her original recipe included walnuts which I immediately removed.

:)  Good for TCB!

I used to prefer plain fudge, now I add toasted slivered almonds & dried cherries.

I thought the two worst were Buzz Aldren...yeah, I know he's 80, but he can't dance...and Kate Gosselin. I know she doesn't have experience, but so what she can't dance

I just saw the ratings.

DANCING WITH THE STARS had its highest ratings ever for a season premiere.

And that helped CASTLE earn its best ratings ever last night. It even beat, for the very first time, an original episode of CSI: MIAMI which had a first run low for the show.

So much for not having any "stars" that anyone recognized!

Thanks to all for the comments on my comments.

SLINGS & ARROWS was most entertaining, and sometimes TOO close to my experience.....but Mr Paul Gross was most excellent.

Some ideas we're throwing around (a few of these phrases came from the film) and not saying which ones I like or dislike:

Baseball; A Jewish American Love Story

Making It Home (besides the baseball metaphor, the film is about Jews becoming at home in America)

"Big League Jews"

"Not Supposed to be a Ballplayer: Baseball and the American Jewish Experience"

"In the Big Inning: Jews and America's Game"

"Ice Cream Cohens and Rabbis of Swat"

"Jews on First"

Hammerin' Hebrews

"An American Dream: The Remarkable Story of Jews and Baseball"

"An Avenue to Being American: The Remarkable Story of Jews and Baseball."

"The Crack of the Bat: The Remarkable Story of Jews, America and Baseball"

I keep forgetting about flax. I hear it's good for you and it doesn't do anything bad to the taste

If you can, look for the toasted ground flax.  We used to be able to buy it here & the market stopped carrying it.

Flax seed/oil is healthier when it's raw, although it tastes better when it's toasted.  I used to add it regularly to my oatmeal, however, I grew tired of the gritty texture of it (the ground stuff).  It also doesn't digest easily, if you get my drift.

I DO NOT like Big league, ice cream, jews on 1st, or hammerin. I'm not keen on In the big inning or An Avenue.

"The Crack of the Bat: The Remarkable Story of Jews, America and Baseball" has a nice ring to it and is my pick if you change the name.  The more I say it out loud the more I like it.  In fact it is now my 1st choice, followed by the original title or "An American Dream: The Remarkable Story of Jews and Baseball"

Funny how strongly I feel about these. :)  When you are sharing my comments, please don't forget to mention they come from a Jewish gal who loves baseball. ;)

And now for something completely different...I just finished listening to Andrew Lloyd Webber's newest musical, Love Never Dies, the sequel/follow-up to The Phantom of the Opera

Well...it's not bad (most of the music is pretty good...repetitive, but good), but what I thought about most while listening to it was, this is the story that they came up with?? :-\

I'm not sorry that I got it.  I also feel that I needed official recordings of the complete series of songs, "The Heart is Slow to Learn" (actually taken from the DVD), "Our Kind of Love" as it was used in The Beautiful Game and now, "Love Never Dies." ;)

Toasted solves those problems, ground keeps it from getting stuck in my teeth.  I prefer it in dry cereal than in oatmeal.

That's the recipe I also use. Love it.

All of the suggested titles, apart from Making It Home, were written by Jews. The reason the producer wants to change it was that he has gotten some negative feedback on the JEWS AND BASEBALL title that it was too harsh and in your face. The film does have a lot of humor in it, and we want people to feel that it would be a fun film to watch. Hammerin' Hebrew was a  nickname for Hank Greenberg as well as Ryan Braun. But I think it's important to note your feelings about it and when we come down to selecting a title it will be good to have that feedback.  Thanks, Jane!

Oh---Ice Cream Cohens were sold when Andy Cohen was a big league star, and The Rabbi of Swat was a nickname for Moses Solomon, taking off from Babe Ruth's "Sultan of Swat" nickname.

Finally I decided I needed to watch SOMETHING concrete, so I pulled up DAMAGES from the DVR and settled in with another outstanding episode. I've really gotten into the show this season even more so than the first season. I thought season two, which was very good, was the weakest of the three seasons. I honestly think this season is the best.

Then I settled in for LOST.

I don't think it's much of a spoiler to state it's an episode devoted to Richard Alpert whose backstory was most interesting indeed. I thoroughly enjoyed his story though I wasn't quite as blown away by it as I was expecting to be. Still, there were certainly some revelations forthcoming this week.

I guess I'm going to have tomorrow off. Nothing else arrived today, and I'm really not expecting anything quite yet, so looks like tomorrow may be mine all mine.

If it is, I won't putter around channel surfing as I did tonight. I'll pick some movies to watch during the afternoon and early evening.

Met him on a baseball field right near the shul
Da Jew run run run, da Jew run run
Somebody told me that his name was Shmul
Da Jew run run run, da Jew run run

Yeah, the corner shul
Yeah, his name was Shmul
And on a walk to home
Da Jew run run run, da Jew run run

No one has mentioned chocolate chips in the brownies.

Another great SOUTHLAND episode tonight...with a slight cast change, which was alright by me.

I do wish the show was close-captioned, however. I had one hella time understanding John and Ben's conversation during the ride back to LA. I had to watch it over and over again to get some of it, and still could not get the last bit that Ben said.

Regina King deserves an Emmy nod for her work in this show! She has become one of my favorite modern day actresses.

Chocolate with nuts is good by me!

Chocolate chips in brownies = heaven.

Frosting on brownies is ok as well, as long as it is good frosting. That is how my sis makes hers.

Frankly, I will eat brownies any way they come!

Back from Grant's and then dinner.  We finished everything - all fixes in and fine, and all photos now in and fine.  Just as we were wrapping up I found one more person's name I'd misspelled, so we did a global and fixed all the instances of it.  I just glanced through the new pdf and it looks swell and seems like we might finally have put this puppy to bed.  I'll go through it again tomorrow - not really reading, but just double checking all the pages we did fixes on to make sure nothing else moved around - although having just done that, everything looked correct.  The photo section (16 pages) is really fun and laid out wonderfully by Grant.  The page count with all of it is 416 pages.   And Grant's solution to the Vilanch quote was perfect.  We simply deleted the end of it - the thing about my producing his cast album.  That part really had nothing to do with anything and now the quote ends with his nice comments about the book - on a positive and non-jokey note.  It works perfectly.
