DAYS OF WANE AND ROSES

Well, you've read the notes, you've whizzed through the notes, even as the notes were waning, and now it is time for you to post until the whizzing cows come home - I think we all know how long it takes a whizzing cow.

Sparrow In The Treetop - Guy Mitchell
Sittin' in a Tree House - Marty Robbins
Bird on my Head - David Seville

My real list later.

I've just returned from visiting OzDerek who says hello.  He tires very quickly but is in good spirits.

Special thank you to DR Hisaka from OzDerek. Your words from this morning (last night) were delivered. He appreciates all the support he is receiving from the HHW gang.

Good morning, all!  Back to Toyland today; I only have one more week with the mighty Tom Murray before he's off to do ANYONE CAN WHISTLE at Ravinia and be musical director for WINESBURG OHIO in Philadelphia. He's been a fantastic right hand for the past 6 months, and I will miss his observations, his humor, and his computer work.  So, we've about a week to put the major chunk of this Toyland edition to bed.

Yesterday was tied up in a bit of housecleaning:  DARLING OF THE DAY is filed away, invoiced, and in the hands of the copyist, and my work space is all tidied for the next projects, which include some restoration of a Harold Arlen show and another Victor Herbert score, THE LADY OF THE SLIPPER.

DRTomovoz, send Derek my regards and best wishes.

TOD:
CD:  THE PRINCE OF THE PAGODAS and ONDINE, two contemporary scored I'm determined to learn to love; NEW GUY IN TOWN; Anna Netrebko and French operetta courtesy of DR Francois.
DVD:  The same Netflix picks I've been meaning to watch for the past two weeks, I forget what they are!
  VCR:  cheap porn

TOTD:  DVD "Madagascar" enjoyable but would not watch it again.

CD: Last to be handled! I've been copying "Boom Boom Baby" (Billy "Crash" Craddock) for OzDerek.
More music in the new day I guess.
I've been listening to Brian Wilson's "Smile" quite a bit lately.

Your thoughts etc will certainly be passed on to DR OzDerek DR Elmore. I would think he is well asleep now. I know he is being taken out for a belated birthday lunch tomorrow so he will certainly need his sleep.

Hello, Tom!

We are well on the island. Thanks for asking.

I am listening to Revolver at the moment. One of my favorite Beatles albums (Rubber Soul is one of the others). I then make a big jump to Broadway (and Off-Broadway) with 110 in the Shade (OBC), 1776 (OBC), Romance, Romance (OBC), When Pigs Fly (Off-Bway), Whoop-De-Doo (Off-Bway), a live recording from 1982 by Jackie Cain and Roy Kral of their Sondheim show at Michael's Pub, and last, but certainly not least, New Guy in Town!

We are about to watch "Spooks" on TV. It's called M.I.5. in the USA I think.  Great editing and great tension.

DR Ben.  I played "Revolver" only last week. It's a great album.

I did, indeed, survive the sleep study! Shakalaka Technician sends her love. She hooked me up to my machines and put me to bed last night - at 8:30! Who goes to bed at 8:30?!?! The first act of a show has barely started at 8:30!! I watched TV until 12:30 and then I dozed off.

I have to say, that the CPAP machine, bizarre as it may be, is BRILLIANT! I slept so well (once I finally got to sleep). I don't think I woke up once the whole night and the guy this morning told me I didn't snore at all.

I got very nauseated on the train coming home this morning. I think my blood sugar levels were low - I hadn't had anything to eat or drink since 7:30 last night! My hands were shaky and my knees were weak. I felt like puking on my own two feet.

But, here I am and it's all over. I have to make an appointment for an office visit to go over my charts and actually order my very own CPAP machine for use in my home environment, but as far as I know - no more sleep studies! Or wire hangers! EVER!!

I just read that Ms. Alice Ripley will be playing Lily in the concert version of ON THE TWENTIETH CENTURY in Boston. Mr. George Dvorsky will be playing the Kevin Kline role.

Now, I love Alice, but...that seems like odd casting to me. Madeline Kahn...Judy Kaye...Alice Ripley. I dunno...

I saw the original Broadway production with Judy Kaye and it has always been one of my favorite shows and scores.

It did turn out that I had a 101 degree fever at the time and I didn't know it and when I got back to Montreal the next day I was in bed for the next week.

For Godzilla fans;
Yesterday, I encountered a beautiful statue of the first (original model) Godzilla in front of a new theater in Hibiya which many theaters have been for many, many years, in the center of Tokyo. A very old and historical theater, in which the legendary Godzilla was born in 1954, was reconstructed for its decrepitude a few months ago and the statue has been raised, for HIS great achievement and remarkable feats, by the Toho Co.
On the plate of the plinth, a well-known line of Prof. Kyohei Yamane(paleontologist), from the first Godzilla film in 1954, has been engraved.
“ I CAN’T POSSIBLY BELIEVE THAT THIS GODZILLA IS THE LAST ONE”
(I’m not sure how it’s been translated in English in the film …. Hope the fans know it)
And this is the one.

DR MS, try as I might, I cannot take a liking to any anime.  I've seen the three you mention, plus Princess Mononoke, Spirited Away and Tokyo Godfathers, and none of them does it for me.  It just seems to me that in all anime, there's always an underlaying silliness and sticky-sweet sentimentality that prevents me from relating to the story and its characters.  And I always find the animation itself to be on the cheap side.

The only anime that I have ever appreciated on any level were the cartoon shows of my youth--Astro Boy, Prince Planet, Gigantor and Tobor the 8th Man.

Now, Godzilla films--thems I could relate to!

Thanks for the lovely pictures, DR Hisaka.  Especially the last one, where it looks like Godzilla is having a casual daytime stroll amongst the people of Tokyo.

I wish I still had my Aurora model of Godzilla.
